- 0:00Speaker 1: Back with Cav on the UConn Hockey Coaches Show. We
- 0:02Speaker 1: have another Coaches Show tomorrow night. Mike Prespino and Jason
- 0:05Speaker 1: Candle talk UConn football. Plus, we have Sincere Bowers and
- 0:10Speaker 1: Hayden Pegg as the football players tomorrow night. 6 to
- 0:13Speaker 1: 7 right here on the UConn Sports Network, the Varsity
- 0:16Speaker 1: Network app, and the VarsityNetwork.com.
- 0:19Speaker 2: They played such a great game, too, last week. That
- 0:22Speaker 2: was a heartbreaker watching it. I didn't like that call, either.
- 0:25Speaker 2: I didn't think that was a roughing the passer call
- 0:28Speaker 2: on that, but.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Well, there were some calls that should have been made. Yeah, yeah.
- 0:34Speaker 2: I mean, I really enjoyed watching Jason's teams play. They
- 0:39Speaker 2: play hard, and they were down 27-7 in that game.
- 0:42Speaker 2: For them to come back like that, I'm excited to
- 0:46Speaker 2: see where he's going to bring the program.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Have you talked to him much? I mean, the one
- 0:50Speaker 1: thing that really stands out to me, he's old school,
- 0:53Speaker 1: very detail-oriented too.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Yeah, we played golf this summer. Really enjoyed him. Met
- 0:59Speaker 2: his wife, his family. He got some young kids and
- 1:03Speaker 2: seems like, certainly seems like the right guy for this job.
- 1:07Speaker 1: All right, let's get into your young guys because you
- 1:09Speaker 1: have a bunch of them and you have a transfer.
- 1:11Speaker 1: I guess let's start there. Jeremy Leranger comes from Nebraska, Omaha.
- 1:15Speaker 1: And I actually did a little DMing with their radio voice,
- 1:19Speaker 1: Mike Leranger. Oh, what's Mike's last? I forget. Anyhow, he
- 1:23Speaker 1: said you guys are going to like Jeremy. What have
- 1:25Speaker 1: you liked about him on the ice so far and
- 1:27Speaker 1: off the ice? Does he fit in pretty well?
- 1:30Speaker 2: He does. He's got a really high hockey IQ. He's skilled.
- 1:35Speaker 2: He skates well. He's one of those guys who may
- 1:38Speaker 2: skate better with the puck. Some guys lose speed when
- 1:41Speaker 2: they have the puck. They slow down. He doesn't. He
- 1:44Speaker 2: can accelerate when he has the puck. I think he
- 1:48Speaker 2: is going to bring a lot of skill to our
- 1:50Speaker 2: power play. And I'm, I'm excited to watch him play
- 1:53Speaker 2: this year.
- 1:55Speaker 1: You've got Charlie Morrison coming over and it's not the
- 1:58Speaker 1: Quebec major junior hockey league anymore. It's the Quebec maritime
- 2:01Speaker 1: junior hockey league. As I found out doing prep last night,
- 2:04Speaker 1: but you got him, you got Jacob Reese on the
- 2:07Speaker 1: blue line. Let's start with these two guys are both. Well,
- 2:10Speaker 1: Morrison's big boy, six, four, one 98 Reese, six foot
- 2:13Speaker 1: one 87, a lot of games under their belt and juniors, uh,
- 2:18Speaker 1: Do you see playing significant roles, getting their feet wet
- 2:21Speaker 1: early and getting thrown right into the fire? Like a
- 2:23Speaker 1: lot of guys will, obviously.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you forgot Will McIsaac is also with
- 2:27Speaker 2: that group, and he's a 6'3. You know, between he
- 2:31Speaker 2: and Charlie, they're really kind of twin towers, the two
- 2:34Speaker 2: of them. One's a right shot, one's a left shot,
- 2:37Speaker 2: but big, long, physical, good skaters for us. So they'll
- 2:42Speaker 2: provide a lot of– I think they're primarily, you know,
- 2:49Speaker 2: strong defensive players however they do have some offense to
- 2:52Speaker 2: their game and jacob reese was a kid we picked
- 2:55Speaker 2: up late in the summer when uh you know we
- 3:00Speaker 2: were counting on someone else to come in and it
- 3:02Speaker 2: didn't work out so he he's come in and he's
- 3:05Speaker 2: acclimated himself pretty well.
- 3:09Speaker 1: With the breakdown, righty versus lefty on the blue line.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Sorry about that. What is your mix? It's funny because
- 3:16Speaker 1: Chris McKenzie brought this up on media day where he's
- 3:18Speaker 1: got the perfect mix of lefties and righties on his
- 3:22Speaker 1: blue line on this year's team. What about your team?
- 3:24Speaker 1: And does that make a difference?
- 3:28Speaker 2: You know, I think it makes a difference to some extent. However,
- 3:32Speaker 2: you know, I've coached a national championship team where it
- 3:34Speaker 2: was six lefties. So the bottom line is you got
- 3:38Speaker 2: to be really good. I do think it does help
- 3:44Speaker 2: in the neutral zone when you're transitioning pucks at times.
- 3:47Speaker 2: I think it helps sometimes on your breakout. But overall,
- 3:51Speaker 2: I think good defensemen can play the offside if they
- 3:55Speaker 2: have to. Right now, we have a breakdown of four
- 3:58Speaker 2: lefties and four righties. I'm not saying every game is
- 4:01Speaker 2: going to be played that way, but right now it's
- 4:04Speaker 2: nice to have that breakdown.
- 4:06Speaker 1: All right, among the new freshmen, you got a draft
- 4:08Speaker 1: pick here from Minnesota in Liam Adamofsky, who is 6'1, 196,
- 4:14Speaker 1: played for North Bay in the Ontario Hockey League where
- 4:17Speaker 1: he was a captain. What are your expectations for this
- 4:20Speaker 1: young man? What will fans like about this young man?
- 4:23Speaker 2: Yeah, Liam, he reminds me of Mark Gatcombe when he
- 4:28Speaker 2: came here. He's a big, big, strong, right shot, physical
- 4:32Speaker 2: power forward player. you know, will finish checks, has a
- 4:38Speaker 2: potential to be a penalty killer for us. But he's
- 4:42Speaker 2: a kid I think the fans are going to grow
- 4:44Speaker 2: to really like watch him play.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Paul Davis, Windsor, the Ontario Hockey League. You've got Britton Allstead,
- 4:53Speaker 1: who comes from Minnesota by way of.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Penticton.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Yes, the BCHL, which you've had players from there. Speed?
- 5:02Speaker 1: Are we talking speed guys here?
- 5:05Speaker 2: Yeah, Cole. I think when you look at Cole, Colin Frank,
- 5:08Speaker 2: and Britton, they all skate really well. Cole, again, played
- 5:13Speaker 2: in Windsor and was on a loaded team last year.
- 5:17Speaker 2: They had some really good players on that team. He
- 5:22Speaker 2: was one of their leaders. He's a pesky penalty killer.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Plays along the lines of a Jake Percival type game. So,
- 5:34Speaker 2: And then the other two guys are pretty highly skilled.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Colin Frank scored a lot of goals in the USHL.
- 5:39Speaker 2: So we've got a good mix of forwards coming in.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Yes, and you go from Tabor Heslop wearing number 23
- 5:45Speaker 1: to Jesse Heslop wearing number 23 himself here. And he
- 5:50Speaker 1: comes from Everett of the Western Hockey League, 60 points
- 5:53Speaker 1: over his last two seasons in each of the last
- 5:55Speaker 1: two seasons. So the play-by-play guy is going to have
- 6:00Speaker 1: to remember it's Heslop and not Heslop.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Right. I know. I get mixed up, too. They wear
- 6:04Speaker 2: the same number.
- 6:05Speaker 1: I know. That's what makes it difficult.
- 6:08Speaker 2: But Jesse, again, he was a kid we picked up
- 6:10Speaker 2: late because Jake Richard left so late. And he's been
- 6:14Speaker 2: really good. He's a good two-way player, has a lot
- 6:17Speaker 2: of junior hockey experience. So I'm interested to see how
- 6:21Speaker 2: he fits in here.
- 6:22Speaker 1: All right. One more segment with Cav, then we'll visit
- 6:25Speaker 1: with two of his captains. We've got Joey Muldowney and
- 6:27Speaker 1: Mike Burtag coming up shortly as the UConn Hockey Coaches
- 6:30Speaker 1: Show continues here on Learfield.
