Latest / THE DAILY BRIEF / Iran deal - Trump blasts GOP critics as signing ceremony delayed
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: You see Donald Trump running around saying that people are
- 0:03Speaker 1: stupid per se. But I think the only stupid one
- 0:05Speaker 1: is him. Let's look at the terms of the deal
- 0:07Speaker 1: for I mean, well, look, let's let's let's picture. Okay,
- 0:14Speaker 1: it's not let's do it's four hundred billion dollars to
- 0:17Speaker 1: the Iranian regime, one hundred billion in sanctioned relief, three
- 0:21Speaker 1: hundred billion dollars in a reconstruction fund. That's a lot
- 0:23Speaker 1: of money flowing to the regime. That's well, that's that
- 0:25Speaker 1: doesn't sound like unconvin unconditional.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Let's let's let's pick that apart. The three hundred billion
- 0:32Speaker 2: that we're talking about for reconstruction does not go to
- 0:34Speaker 2: the regime. It goes to corporations. It's an investment, and
- 0:38Speaker 2: it's to rebuild the infrastructure that the world relies upon
- 0:42Speaker 2: for the oil supply chain. And it's going to be
- 0:44Speaker 2: paid for primarily by the Gulf States.
- 0:46Speaker 1: It's going to get the revenue from the oil sales.
- 0:49Speaker 2: No, I understand that.
- 0:50Speaker 1: So if you're if you're going to commit to rebuilding
- 0:53Speaker 1: Iranian infrastructure, who gets the revenue from that you just
- 0:56Speaker 1: lifted sanctions?
- 0:58Speaker 2: They will be as part of the program am in
- 1:00Speaker 2: the plan, there will be imf oversight of those funds.
- 1:04Speaker 2: They will.
- 1:08Speaker 3: That has has been finalized by the administration. And and
- 1:13Speaker 3: look we I mean, we bombed them. The ira audience
- 1:16Speaker 3: have been clear they want reparations for that. And now
- 1:19Speaker 3: there's a vehicle by which they could potentially get it
- 1:22Speaker 3: for uh a war that we started, which is kind
- 1:27Speaker 3: of amazing to think about. But that's really what's being
- 1:30Speaker 3: contemplated here. But even if we don't get to that, uh,
- 1:34Speaker 3: apparently immediately, according to this MoU, they get oil and
- 1:38Speaker 3: gas sanctions waivers. They are able to sell their oil
- 1:42Speaker 3: and gas on the open market in a way that
- 1:45Speaker 3: they haven't for a very long time. That is going
- 1:48Speaker 3: to net them tens of billions of dollars every single month.
- 1:52Speaker 3: So the president, I think what's interesting is that I
- 1:58Speaker 3: think that he feels like he can say that it's
- 2:01Speaker 3: been unconditional surrender. But then he also says things like this,
- 2:06Speaker 3: this is more from Axios. He says, the only way
- 2:09Speaker 3: I can get tougher is if I go in there
- 2:11Speaker 3: for another two or three weeks and continue to bomb
- 2:14Speaker 3: the hell out of them, Right, But where that get
- 2:16Speaker 3: Where does that get us? The straight up. Hormouse will
- 2:18Speaker 3: not be opems to know the more bombing is not
- 2:22Speaker 3: actually going to help the situation, which is why he
- 2:25Speaker 3: decided to just cut his losses.
- 2:27Speaker 4: He feels like leverage to me. He doesn't want gas
- 2:29Speaker 4: prices getting up to five dollars and six dollars a gallon.
- 2:32Speaker 4: And the Iranians know that, Yes, they're being bombastic, by
- 2:34Speaker 4: the way, but they also know they have leverage here.
- 2:37Speaker 4: It's clear to me somebody was walking around the Senate
- 2:40Speaker 4: with the thesaurus today because the Republicans found eight different
- 2:43Speaker 4: ways of saying this is terrible Republicans, it's he's getting
- 2:47Speaker 4: bad advice, this is appeasement, a colossal failure, very concerning.
- 2:51Speaker 4: These are his teammates in the party. And oh, by
- 2:54Speaker 4: the way, the House Republicans aren't in town, or we'd
- 2:56Speaker 4: be hearing from dozens of them expressing their concern. This
- 3:00Speaker 4: is a political mess, and he wants to turn the
- 3:02Speaker 4: page on Iran. He has just glued the book open
- 3:05Speaker 4: for at least sixty more days.
- 3:06Speaker 5: Well, the problem is he also doesn't have any options,
- 3:08Speaker 5: and he's running out of options here and he knows that,
- 3:10Speaker 5: and which is very unfortunate. Is that around holds all
- 3:14Speaker 5: the cards at this point, and they understand that they
- 3:17Speaker 5: have the president and in America in a very vulnerable
- 3:20Speaker 5: position right now. Something that was supposed to last a
- 3:23Speaker 5: few weeks is now lasting months, could last now he's
- 3:27Speaker 5: saying that he could potentially now bomb them again. So
- 3:29Speaker 5: this sixty day potential deal or whatever, it has to
- 3:34Speaker 5: be better, by the way, than the JCPOA, because if
- 3:37Speaker 5: it is not, then I think that is a complete
- 3:39Speaker 5: failure on Donald Trump's part. And Donald Trump has not
- 3:42Speaker 5: shown us one bit that he has a leadership to
- 3:45Speaker 5: actually produce something that is better. There is not one
- 3:49Speaker 5: part of this process whatsoever from the beginning, whether it
- 3:54Speaker 5: is whether he is claiming he obliterated the nuclear program,
- 3:57Speaker 5: which he absolutely didn't, he has not been full to
- 4:00Speaker 5: the American people at all, and every step of the
- 4:04Speaker 5: way it has been a failure. And this is going
- 4:07Speaker 5: to be part of his legacy moving forward.
- 4:09Speaker 3: Let me play Mike Pompeio, the former Trump Secretary of
- 4:13Speaker 3: State and CIA director. This is his assessment of the
- 4:16Speaker 3: deal that Trump's duck.
- 4:17Speaker 6: There's also some things there that just don't make any
- 4:20Speaker 6: sense to me to somehow think that because they've written
- 4:22Speaker 6: down on a piece of paper something they promise for
- 4:24Speaker 6: decades that they won't build a nuclear weapon. That's just
- 4:27Speaker 6: that's that's foolish at best. These there are no there's
- 4:30Speaker 6: three m's.
- 4:31Speaker 3: Right.
- 4:31Speaker 6: We now are going to say it's okay for them
- 4:33Speaker 6: to have missiles. We're going to allow them to have money.
- 4:36Speaker 6: The sansience relief that we're about to provide them is
- 4:39Speaker 6: going to give them billions of dollars and they'll rebuild
- 4:41Speaker 6: many of their programs. And so that's the second M.
- 4:44Speaker 6: That's a mistake. And the third one is is this
- 4:46Speaker 6: idea that somehow there are Iranian moderates. There's no such thing.
- 4:49Speaker 6: These are all radical Islamis, and so only time will
- 4:53Speaker 6: tell how this agreement will play out.
- 4:57Speaker 3: No one has been more emphatic about this idea that
- 5:01Speaker 3: they that the Iranians have changed their ways than Jade Vance,
- 5:05Speaker 3: who's I guess supposed to be the chief negotiator here
- 5:09Speaker 3: for the government. He has in several interviews this week
- 5:12Speaker 3: really hammered home that he just believes that they've had
- 5:15Speaker 3: a change of heart. They're ready to do things differently.
- 5:17Speaker 3: They're ready to come to us and be a part
- 5:19Speaker 3: of the global stage, and by Pompeio was pointing out
- 5:22Speaker 3: that makes no sense. I mean, and that's what this
- 5:24Speaker 3: whole deal is kind of predicated on.
- 5:27Speaker 7: Yeah, that the triumph of hope over experience. Look, I
- 5:29Speaker 7: think this is fundamentally a very pragmatic deal given the
- 5:33Speaker 7: political situation, and you highlighted some of the folks who
- 5:35Speaker 7: were critical of it.
- 5:36Speaker 2: All of those.
- 5:37Speaker 7: Republicans who are criticizing it, they either lost their primary,
- 5:41Speaker 7: they either are not running for reelections, or they're running
- 5:44Speaker 7: in it, not Roger Recker, or they are running in
- 5:47Speaker 7: deep red sta.
- 5:48Speaker 3: Not Roger Ricker, and not Ted Cruz, Ted Cruise, not for.
- 5:52Speaker 7: Reelection this year.
- 5:53Speaker 3: It doesn't mean people are the only people that like
- 5:57Speaker 3: who does my point eliminated?
- 6:06Speaker 7: My point is that this is a This is a
- 6:09Speaker 7: pragmatic deal, and a lot of Republicans actually have been
- 6:12Speaker 7: thrilled to see this is the outcome.
- 6:14Speaker 6: But how.
- 6:18Speaker 7: Can I speak for more than two They were alarmed
- 6:21Speaker 7: heading into the midterms that there were some documents to
- 6:24Speaker 7: suggest we would have seven dollars gas prices. So I
- 6:27Speaker 7: think Republicans are glad to see that now gas prices
- 6:31Speaker 7: are down below four dollars a gallon on average nationally,
- 6:34Speaker 7: we're going to see inflation come down. They are glad
- 6:37Speaker 7: and relieved to see that Iran is going to be
- 6:40Speaker 7: on the back burner and they can focus on domestic issues,
- 6:45Speaker 7: Socialist candidates, and so again, there's many many Republicans who
- 6:49Speaker 7: are glad to have some sort of relief.
- 6:51Speaker 5: Valve because they're not going to this is they're okay.
- 6:55Speaker 5: First of all, this mlu is lasting sixty days, You're
- 6:58Speaker 5: getting closer and closer to the midtermal Lie actions. If
- 7:01Speaker 5: he does not come up with a solution that is
- 7:04Speaker 5: better than the j c p o A, there is
- 7:06Speaker 5: no way that this is resolved before the midterm elections,
- 7:09Speaker 5: and every vulnerable Republican is going to have to deal
- 7:11Speaker 5: with this when it comes to gas prices. First of all,
- 7:14Speaker 5: they're potentially opening the straight.
- 7:16Speaker 6: This straight was not.
- 7:18Speaker 2: Its open.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Four dollars.
- 7:30Speaker 5: I want to ask, you have several times that the
- 7:33Speaker 5: straight will open?
- 7:34Speaker 2: Yes, of course we have.
- 7:35Speaker 5: And has it opened every single time?
- 7:37Speaker 2: I don't know if I'll tell you this scorning the scoring.
- 7:43Speaker 5: Why is the why was the straight closed?
- 7:47Speaker 2: Why was the straight?
- 7:48Speaker 4: Why?
- 7:50Speaker 5: Because Donald Trump? Donald Trump caused it to be closed.
- 7:53Speaker 5: So at the end of the day. We are now
- 7:55Speaker 5: at an m o U. That is putting this back
- 7:58Speaker 5: to where we were at the beginning of estate, which
- 8:00Speaker 5: means the United.
- 8:06Speaker 2: They would have probably a very different perspective if it's just.
- 8:09Speaker 1: The way it was. The regime is still there, the
- 8:12Speaker 1: people are still being oppressed. I don't know what you're
- 8:13Speaker 1: talking about.
- 8:14Speaker 2: People. When did that become a constitution?
- 8:18Speaker 3: I do wonder. I mean, you just brought up the
- 8:20Speaker 3: Iranian people. Their lives haven't changed matter, They're still being
- 8:26Speaker 3: run by I told.
- 8:28Speaker 1: Us like four hundred, there's nothing.
- 8:31Speaker 3: There's nothing if you're in Iranian, right There's not If
- 8:35Speaker 3: you're an Iranian right now? What has changed for you? You
- 8:39Speaker 3: are you still have the same structure, government structure that
- 8:42Speaker 3: you had before. Now you have that government structure being
- 8:45Speaker 3: promised billions of dollars of funds that only helps to
- 8:50Speaker 3: reinforce their control over society. What positives are they getting
- 8:55Speaker 3: out of?
- 8:55Speaker 2: Probably not a lot at me. But we kind of
- 8:57Speaker 2: have to pick a lane, don't we. Right either, we
- 9:00Speaker 2: want to have this humanitarian purpose, which is going to
- 9:04Speaker 2: require a more dedicated effort there and higher gas prices.
- 9:08Speaker 2: Let's be honest. For the American people, this is about
- 9:10Speaker 2: their wallets and what they pay at the pump, and
- 9:13Speaker 2: we have no tolerance for it. But why is patriotic
- 9:16Speaker 2: mission behind this? Is not like World War Two, Let's
- 9:19Speaker 2: go and work and well, you know, airplanes and be
- 9:22Speaker 2: part of the war effort and buy war bonds that
- 9:25Speaker 2: that doesn't exist anymore. That's part of what the bomb
- 9:27Speaker 2: was talking about.
- 9:28Speaker 3: That's a transparent answer because honest basically it is that
- 9:32Speaker 3: we don't have the stomach for this, which is what
- 9:34Speaker 3: the Iranians knew
