- Good morning, I'm Kai Rivers and this is Studio Signal — the week ahead edition, brought to you by Harkins Capital. Let's talk about what's coming. But first, let's catch up on what went down this weekend, starting with the box office. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is still proving to be a certified power-up for Universal, pulling in another thirty-five million dollars in its third weekend. That thing has legs. Meanwhile, Lee Cronin's take on The Mummy scared up a respectable thirteen million. It’s a solid reminder that even in a crowded market, a familiar name and a good horror concept can still find an audience. And speaking of audiences, Coachella's second weekend delivered on the surprise guests. Justin Bieber brought out both Billie Eilish and SZA during his headlining set, and PinkPantheress basically threw a party on stage with a huge lineup of celebs. It’s become a core part of the festival playbook: the "who's gonna show up?" factor is almost as big a draw as the official lineup. And in franchise news, Joe Russo dropped a pretty big tease for Marvel fans this weekend, telling Deadline that a re-release of Avengers: Endgame is in the works that will feature new footage. He talked about building a bridge to the 'Doomsday' narrative, which is a fascinating signal that Disney is still finding new ways to monetize one of its biggest assets and keep the grand Marvel storyline alive and kicking. Never, ever bet against the mouse's ability to get you back in the theater. Alright, let's look at the week ahead. And really, there is only one place to start: Las Vegas, for the N. A. B. Show. The show floor officially opened today, and the entire M&E tech world has descended on the desert. This is where the deals get done and where we get a real look at the tools that will be powering content creation for the next few years. So, what are we watching for this week at N. A. B.? Three big things. First, Artificial Intelligence. It is everywhere. Session tracks are packed with titles like "Make AI Make Sense" and "Shoot, Transform, Amplify: The AI Content Creation Masterclass." Companies like NVIDIA and Cisco are showcasing how AI can be used for everything from real-time translation and ad generation to totally automated quality assurance testing. The big question on the floor is how much of this is real, ready-to-deploy tech versus just slick marketing hype. Second, the cloud. We're going to see a ton about cloud-native architecture and IP-based infrastructures. There's a big Main Stage session called "Streaming the Future: FOX's Cloud Transformation Journey with AWS" that should give a great look at how a major legacy player is moving its entire operation into the cloud. This is the less glamorous but arguably more important side of the business — making workflows more efficient and flexible from anywhere in the world. And third, the creator economy. N. A. B. isn't just for big broadcast anymore. There's a huge focus on the convergence of creator tools and enterprise-level production. We're seeing panels on what creators want from brands and how they're building communities across platforms. It's a clear signal that the gap between a YouTuber's bedroom setup and a network studio is shrinking fast. Outside of Vegas, it's a relatively quiet week for earnings, especially after last week's banking bonanza. Tesla reports on Wednesday, which is always a must-watch for its read on consumer demand and tech innovation. But for M&E specifically, the calendar is pretty light. On the content side, Netflix has a few things dropping. The big one is probably the animated Stranger Things spinoff, Tales From '85, which lands on Thursday. They also have a new thriller called Apex with Charlize Theron and Taron Egerton hitting on Friday. And over on Apple TV Plus, the second season of the thriller Criminal Record arrives on Wednesday. In theaters, the major release for Friday is Michael, the Michael Jackson biopic from director Antoine Fuqua. Lionsgate is positioning this as a massive global event, and its teaser trailer apparently set records for a music biopic, so expectations are sky-high. So, the key questions I have for this week are: Which company is going to emerge from N. A. B. with the most buzz and the most promising new tech? Will the AI demos we see this week feel like a true leap forward, or just more of the same? And can the Michael Jackson biopic overcome the controversy and deliver a true four-quadrant hit for Lionsgate? We'll be tracking all of it, especially the news coming out of N. A. B. all week long. Oh, and speaking of N. A. B., if you're there this week and want to keep this level of M&E intel coming every morning — we're running a special: your first month of Studio Signal Pro is free with the code NAB2026 at checkout. That deal expires this Friday when the show wraps, so grab it while you can. That's your signal for the week ahead. I'm Kai Rivers — rest up, because it's going to be a big one. I'll be back tomorrow morning.
