Speaker 4: Welcome to the show. Thursday edition of the show, and
• 1:32
Speaker 4: we got a lot of stuff to get to. But
• 1:34
Speaker 4: of course, the big story all across the state of
• 1:36
Speaker 4: West Virginia and even into Ohio and Kentucky has been
• 1:39
Speaker 4: the weather. Let's start with Metro News Media riologist Brian Hughes.
• 1:42
Speaker 4: Good morning, sir. What can you tell us?
• 1:44
Speaker 5: Well, right now across West Virginia, we've got over thirty
• 1:47
Speaker 5: thousand customers that are without power. This is you know,
• 1:50
Speaker 5: there were two primary areas that we had with strong
• 1:53
Speaker 5: storms and that was anywhere from Mason County, West Virginia
• 1:56
Speaker 5: about the Point Pleasant area. The first tornado warning in
• 1:59
Speaker 5: our region We're really kicked off just before six am,
• 2:03
Speaker 5: and that was right up there around northern Lawrence County, Ohio,
• 2:08
Speaker 5: and then it moved across Galley and then into Mason County.
• 2:11
Speaker 5: But you can see a line just in the power
• 2:14
Speaker 5: outage map from Mason County all the way out to
• 2:16
Speaker 5: Tucker County where the storms really did some significant damage.
• 2:20
Speaker 5: We have trees on houses, trees all on roads, power
• 2:23
Speaker 5: lines that are down. And then you had the other
• 2:24
Speaker 5: batchel of storms that was across parts of Wyoming and
• 2:28
Speaker 5: McDowell Counties, cross parts of southern Logan and Mingo Counties.
• 2:31
Speaker 5: I mean, we've talked about what's happened in Logan County
• 2:33
Speaker 5: with the big winds that were moving through there, with
• 2:35
Speaker 5: the tornado warning that was issued there, and just south
• 2:38
Speaker 5: really the tornado warning did encompass Logan itself, but just
• 2:41
Speaker 5: south of there, that's where we saw the really the
• 2:44
Speaker 5: winds that were twisting, and that went all the way
• 2:46
Speaker 5: across to the Beckley area. So we've had two big sections.
• 2:50
Speaker 5: But everybody in the state has seen strong thunderstorms. These
• 2:55
Speaker 5: were very large severe thunderstorm warnings that they were issued.
• 2:58
Speaker 5: When I say large, encompassing, you know, enough real estate
• 3:02
Speaker 5: that it was like, wow, that's a that's a big warning.
• 3:04
Speaker 5: That's because we had enough wind that they knew at
• 3:07
Speaker 5: any point in that line when could gusts up and
• 3:10
Speaker 5: be a problem. Now we had those storms this morning.
• 3:13
Speaker 5: We're doing clean up now, and we've still got some
• 3:15
Speaker 5: of the rain charters that that are going to occur.
• 3:17
Speaker 5: But as we go into the safroom of this evening,
• 3:19
Speaker 5: there could be around the storms that happened somewhere between
• 3:23
Speaker 5: four and six o'clock. Those would be the strongest storms,
• 3:26
Speaker 5: and that would be in southern West Virginia to maybe
• 3:28
Speaker 5: up here to the Canal Valley and in points east.
• 3:31
Speaker 5: But then we have some even late night rain that's
• 3:35
Speaker 5: been indicated on some of the forecast models that come
• 3:37
Speaker 5: that comes in like ten to eleven o'clock tonight. But
• 3:42
Speaker 5: once that's done, tomorrow is awesome, Live on the leve
• 3:46
Speaker 5: looking good, Live of love. He's gonna be We're gonaknock
• 3:48
Speaker 5: it out the park, gonna be good stuff. Saturday, Sunday
• 3:51
Speaker 5: good stuff, Monday storms return.
• 3:53
Speaker 4: Okay, So what's before we let you have the timeline
• 3:55
Speaker 4: for here in Charleston. So you said we're gonna be
• 3:57
Speaker 4: cleaning up. I guess over the next couple of hours
• 3:59
Speaker 4: pretty much. Yeah, because we still have in really the
• 4:02
Speaker 4: Kanawa Valley when you compare to other areas Brian didn't
• 4:04
Speaker 4: get hit are right exactly.
• 4:07
Speaker 5: You go north of the Kanagh Valley, Jackson, Rhan Counties, Mace,
• 4:12
Speaker 5: Northern Putnam, back into Mason Counties and Calhoun County. It's
• 4:15
Speaker 5: a hot mess there. And I mentioned Logan Mingo back
• 4:20
Speaker 5: down to Raleigh Counties. It's a mess down there. But yeah,
• 4:23
Speaker 5: on Long I sixty four, not as bad as what
• 4:25
Speaker 5: everybody else got. But we've got the rain that's wrapping,
• 4:28
Speaker 5: that's gonna wrap up here over the next couple of
• 4:30
Speaker 5: hours in the Kanau Valley. There's still rain in Kentucky.
• 4:34
Speaker 5: I'm concerned about because there's probably gonna be some flooding
• 4:36
Speaker 5: across parts of eastern Kentucky, maybe even into parts of
• 4:39
Speaker 5: southern West Virginia. But then we go in this afternoon
• 4:42
Speaker 5: again four to six is when we see the severe
• 4:44
Speaker 5: weather threat the highest, and then we've got some showers
• 4:48
Speaker 5: and storms that might be hit and miss, and then
• 4:50
Speaker 5: some late evening rain. Ten eleven o'clock tonight, it might
• 4:54
Speaker 5: come through. That is still to be determined only because
• 4:57
Speaker 5: forecast models with the big storm as it came through
• 5:00
Speaker 5: this morning. They've got to rejuvenate, sort of get their
• 5:03
Speaker 5: act back together and go Okay, now here's what we're
• 5:05
  Speaker 5: looking at.
• 5:05
Speaker 4: A Metro News Media OLEI is Brian Hughes. Download the
• 5:08
Speaker 4: Metro News television app. You can keep up with him

• 5:11
Speaker 4: the radio two and we'll be talking to you probably
• 5:13
Speaker 4: several times throughout the day.
• 5:15
Speaker 5: And the tornado watch has been canceled for much of
• 5:17
Speaker 5: our region right now.
• 5:18
Speaker 4: Good news there, speaking to which I do want to
• 5:20
Speaker 4: say that the Let's Get Cooking event with Cheff Paul
• 5:24
Speaker 4: Smith at Capitol Market canceled for the day due to
• 5:26
Speaker 4: the threat of severe weather. Brian, thanks a lot. Coming

• 5:32

• 6:14
Speaker 4: they say, a star studded afternoon of West Virginia music.
• 6:17
Speaker 4: A great way to celebrate Father's Day. Sean Zanigae from
• 6:20
Speaker 4: the City of South Charleston and the Farmers Market is
• 6:22

• 6:29
Speaker 4: you here as well. Thanks for having me all right,
• 6:30
Speaker 4: So this is going to be a great event. It's
• 6:33
Speaker 4: three to sixth Sunday at the South Charleston Farmers Market
• 6:36
Speaker 4: and Michael, it's a great lineup that you have put together.
• 6:38
Speaker 6: Here Yeah, it's an embarrassment of riches. I mean, it's
• 6:42
Speaker 6: from beginning to end, there's going to be music, and
• 6:45
Speaker 6: there's going to be four current inductees that are going
• 6:50
Speaker 6: to perform a little Larry Grows, Bob Thompson, Ann Magnuson,
• 6:55
Speaker 6: and John Ellison. But kind of the big news is
• 6:59
Speaker 6: Cory Withers, Bill Withers daughter is coming to town to
• 7:02
Speaker 6: represent the Withers family and to do a musical tribute
• 7:06
  Speaker 6: to her dad.
• 7:07
  Speaker 2: That's awesome.
• 7:08
Speaker 4: Yeah, that's awesome because we all know about Bill Weathers
• 7:10
Speaker 4: and slab Fork, the private slab Fork, Is that right, Okay?
• 7:13
Speaker 6: Yeah, we call them the poet Laureate of.
• 7:17
Speaker 4: West Virginia Music and Sean. This means a lot for
• 7:21
Speaker 4: the Farmers Market to be able to host this event
• 7:22
  Speaker 4: on Sunday.
• 7:23
Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, we're extremely excited to be able to
• 7:25
Speaker 7: partner with them to bring this great event here. It's
• 7:29
Speaker 7: the first of its kind that we've had at the market,
• 7:32
Speaker 7: So we're very excited about that and works everyone to
• 7:35
Speaker 7: come out and have a great time.
• 7:36
Speaker 4: And again you're gonna get away at three o'clock and
• 7:39
Speaker 4: you are asking there's a suggested donation of twenty Bucks.
• 7:43
Speaker 4: That's what according to the flyer, and proceeds will go
• 7:46
Speaker 4: right back into the Hall of Fame.
• 7:47
Speaker 6: Yeah, it's gonna help fund our ceremony that'll be in
• 7:51

• 7:56
  Speaker 6: there's food trucks.
• 7:58
  Speaker 2: Yeah, local vendors.
• 7:59
Speaker 4: A great way to spend Father's Day, plus all the
• 8:01
Speaker 4: good stuff Sean that you know that the Farmer's Market
• 8:03
Speaker 4: always has yea. So is there a place online where
• 8:07
Speaker 4: people can learn more about it to go and check
• 8:09
  Speaker 4: it out?
• 8:09
Speaker 7: Either our Facebook page, the Music Hall of Fames Facebook
• 8:13
Speaker 7: page and the city Is I tross some website page?
• 8:15
Speaker 4: Do they need to like I know you said there's
• 8:17
Speaker 4: a donation, you just pay it there. Do you need
• 8:19
Speaker 4: to reserve a spot or the show up? You can
• 8:22
Speaker 4: do it however you like on your phone or I mean,
• 8:25
Speaker 4: and I looked at I look at Michael at that
• 8:27
Speaker 4: lineup of music as you mentioned, you know, Bill Withers, daughter,
• 8:30
Speaker 4: John Allis, Bob Thompson. I mean, all of the icons
• 8:33
Speaker 4: of West Virginia music are going to be in one spot.
• 8:36
Speaker 6: Yeah, I know, it's pretty and it all kind of
• 8:39
Speaker 6: fell into place, and especially with Corey coming and then
• 8:42
Speaker 6: there's you know that. Then we had the features performers too,
• 8:48
Speaker 6: Matt Mullins, William Metheny and Mike mornings Star.
• 8:52
Speaker 2: It's going to be there.
• 8:53
Speaker 4: Are you gonna get all these folks in there to perform?
• 8:54
Speaker 4: Are you going to look like run a single Tuesday
• 8:56
  Speaker 4: or what?
• 8:57
Speaker 6: Well, the sets aren't going to be long. And yeah, people,
• 9:03
Speaker 6: it just kept organically growing.
• 9:06
Speaker 4: It happens, It happens. And yeah, and again we forget Michael.
• 9:08
Speaker 4: You don't forget, but a lot of people may forget
• 9:10
Speaker 4: what an incredible music scene that West Virginia has in general,
• 9:14
Speaker 4: not only in the past but now. I mean, there
• 9:17
Speaker 4: continues to be so many great people out there making
• 9:20
Speaker 4: great music in West Virginia, playing off the legacy of
• 9:24
Speaker 4: people like John Ellison, like Bill Withers and all these
• 9:28
Speaker 4: other incredible stars that have come out of the Mountain State.
• 9:31
Speaker 6: Yeah, it's it's old and new, and you know, by
• 9:35
Speaker 6: the nature of what we do, we induct older people,
• 9:38
Speaker 6: but we also try and encourage, encourage, and you know, uh,
• 9:43
Speaker 6: support and utilize the next generation.
• 9:46
Speaker 4: We've got a great line up and again it all
• 9:48
Speaker 4: starts at three. It's it's a South Charleston Farmers Market
• 9:52
Speaker 4: and in addition to the music, there's food trucks, there's

Speaker 12: about politics. We're going to talk about calling Michelle Obama
• 14:20
Speaker 12: a man. We're going to speak about the White House
• 14:24
Speaker 12: emphasis on the adjective, modifying the noun. We're going to
• 14:28
Speaker 12: talk about a president who's out of control, a neo
• 14:31
Speaker 12: fascist resurgence. We're going to speak about race and DEI
• 14:36
Speaker 12: and the assault upon blackness. We're going to talk about
• 14:38
Speaker 12: American society, the beauty and power of what this nation represents.
• 14:42
Speaker 12: We're going to speak about the two hundred and fiftieth
• 14:45
Speaker 12: anniversary of America. But we're going to speak about the
• 14:48
Speaker 12: delay and denial of opportunity to black people that was
• 14:51
Speaker 12: betokened in June teenth, that has seemed to be a
• 14:56
  Speaker 12: constant and.
• 14:56
Speaker 2: Recurring pattern in the American society.
• 14:59
Speaker 4: And don't want to talk about June teenth. What does
• 15:03
Speaker 4: it mean to you? And not just the dates or
• 15:07
Speaker 4: but the overall observance as we sit here in the
• 15:09
Speaker 4: year of our Lord, twenty twenty six.
• 15:11
Speaker 12: It is twenty twenty six, you know, it means that
• 15:16
Speaker 12: we remember history. We have lived in a period where
• 15:19
Speaker 12: the erasure of history is astonishing.
• 15:22
Speaker 2: Banning of books. I thought we did that.
• 15:24
Speaker 12: I don't know in the Soviet Union or some other narcissistic,
• 15:29
Speaker 12: myopic and certainly fascist society. But here we are in
• 15:33
Speaker 12: America banning books. The Secretary of War formerly Defense ban
• 15:39
Speaker 12: two of my books. I don't think he read them,
• 15:42
Speaker 12: but there it is. So we're living in a very
• 15:45
Speaker 12: tough time and the erasure of that history is pretty
• 15:50
Speaker 12: obnoxious and pretty hurtful and destructive, not simply to black
• 15:54
Speaker 12: people but to all Americans. I teach at the well
• 15:56
Speaker 12: known hbc U Vanderbilt, and being there at Vanderbilt, and
• 16:01
Speaker 12: I'm sure you on radio Land got the joke HBCU.
• 16:03
  Speaker 12: It's not an HBCU, it's a PWI. It's not pyt
• 16:07
Speaker 12: as Michael Jackson would say. But the thing is PWI
• 16:11
Speaker 12: predominantly white institution HBCU historically Black college and university. Well,
• 16:16
Speaker 12: I'm a homeboy cutting up HBCU, so we'll make it
• 16:18
Speaker 12: that way. But at Vanderbilt, my students say, why didn't
• 16:21
Speaker 12: we study this? Why didn't we know this? Why weren't
• 16:23
Speaker 12: we apprized of this? Because we're living in an era
• 16:26
  Speaker 12: where what I don't like I don't want to hear,
• 16:29
Speaker 12: and we can say that on either side, I don't
• 16:31
  Speaker 12: I mean, I'm for open discussion and conversation. I don't
• 16:35
Speaker 12: want to run from the debate. Let's run to the
• 16:37
Speaker 12: debate and engage in conversation. But even that ain't an
• 16:40
Speaker 12: equal Let's not pretend that both sides have equal responsibility.
• 16:45
Speaker 12: Though both sides have participated in problematic practices that need
• 16:50
Speaker 12: to be criticized, for sure, But on the other hand,
• 16:53
Speaker 12: one has a dominant weight. We have never seen a
• 16:56
Speaker 12: president like this. George Bush wasn't this way? Ronald Reagan
• 17:00
Speaker 12: pretty bad in my estimation, but certainly wasn't this. What
• 17:03
Speaker 12: we see now is the unapologetic expression of anti blackness
• 17:08
Speaker 12: and a white supremacist ethic at the heart of American society.
• 17:12
Speaker 12: A plane falls up must be DEI. A train doesn't work,
• 17:15
Speaker 12: must be DEI, except when it's all white men. I
• 17:18
Speaker 12: don't notice they didn't say that the other day, and
• 17:20
Speaker 12: that horrible, horrible tragedy in California. So to me, the
• 17:25
Speaker 12: arbitrary assignment of worth value or if you will, stigma
• 17:31
Speaker 12: has to do with a president's mind who has pervaded
• 17:34
Speaker 12: his own administration. And the Department of Justice is doing
• 17:37
Speaker 12: exactly opposite of what it should do of the Civil
• 17:40
Speaker 12: Rights Division is not holding fast to its historic legacy.
• 17:44
Speaker 12: So we're living in a very powerful time of destruction
• 17:48
Speaker 12: of ideals and goals. And Juneteenth reminds us that this
• 17:52
Speaker 12: nation has always delayed or denied opportunities for African American people.
• 17:57
Speaker 2: We've tried to catch up.
• 17:59
Speaker 12: Many good minded, good willed people in America have tried
• 18:02
Speaker 12: to do the right thing of all colors, races, and ethnicities,
• 18:05
Speaker 12: and we have to remember that. But Juneteenth reminds us
• 18:08
Speaker 12: that black people paid a price, that that price is
• 18:10
Speaker 12: central to the definition of America. And July fourth celebrates
• 18:15
Speaker 12: a nation that we often couldn't celebrate. What did Frederick
• 18:18
Speaker 12: Douglass say, What to the Negro? What to the enslaved.
• 18:20
Speaker 12: What to the black person is the fourth of July.
• 18:23
Speaker 12: That's not anti American, that's not anti patriotic. We have
• 18:27
Speaker 12: been the most profound patriots in this nation. We have
• 18:30
Speaker 12: given blood and time and resource. We went to World
• 18:33
Speaker 12: War Two and came back home and couldn't enjoy the
• 18:36
Speaker 12: very democracy for which we fought on foreign soil. We
• 18:39
Speaker 12: need to know those stories, We need to know that history,
• 18:42
Speaker 12: and June teenth reminds us of that.
• 18:43
Speaker 4: And what was always interesting to me about that was
• 18:46
Speaker 4: in looking back over history, gentlemen, is that you said
• 18:50
Speaker 4: it exactly right. I mean, you went to all these
• 18:54
Speaker 4: different places all over the world, and you fought, You
• 18:56
Speaker 4: gave blood, many many died, and you came back here
• 18:59
Speaker 4: and didn't have the right to vote for the people
• 19:01
Speaker 4: that sent you there to begin with.
• 19:02
Speaker 12: Right, that's a very powerful point. You didn't have the
• 19:05
Speaker 12: right to vote. You couldn't sit in the same restaurant.
• 19:09
Speaker 12: Prisoners of war who were say German, yes, and World
• 19:12
Speaker 12: War two could sit in first class, while the Negro
• 19:15
Speaker 12: soldiers as we were then called, who fought for freedom
• 19:19
Speaker 12: had to sit behind the cotton curtain in Jim Crow.
• 19:22
Speaker 12: The extraordinary paradox, the contradictions of the ideals of America
• 19:28
Speaker 12: that most of us adhere to stand up for. Sing powerfully,
• 19:33
Speaker 12: Ray Charles singing America the Beautiful. I remember Reverend Al
• 19:37
Speaker 12: Sharpening said, he's singing about something he's never seen. He's
• 19:39
Speaker 12: got faith in something that he has not yet seen.
• 19:42
Speaker 12: We have invested so much energy and resource and defense
• 19:46
Speaker 12: of the American society that then come back home not
• 19:50
Speaker 12: only World War Two, but be denied, but after Vietnam
• 19:54
Speaker 12: and then struggling day to day. Right now we are
• 19:57
Speaker 12: seeing the rollback of so much. The Voting Rights Act
• 20:00
Speaker 12: has been virtually gutted by an extreme court that refuses
• 20:04
Speaker 12: to acknowledge that we need those protections in order to
• 20:07
Speaker 12: exercise the franchise. We're not trying to gerrymander districts and
• 20:11
Speaker 12: redraw them like we were Picasso in order to benefit
• 20:16
Speaker 12: and advantage a narrow, minoritized population. We're trying to compensate
• 20:20
Speaker 12: for the denial of opportunity to those minoritized populations.
• 20:24
Speaker 2: And can we finally have justice in America? So we're
• 20:27
  Speaker 2: living in.
• 20:27
Speaker 12: Tough times, and we often pay a price for the
• 20:30
Speaker 12: very democracy that we're.
• 20:32
Speaker 2: Not able to enjoy.
• 20:33
Speaker 4: So i'd give Michael Eric Dyson, and I'm sure Ray
• 20:37
Speaker 4: explained it to you here. Ray, I am gonna mister
• 20:40
Speaker 4: Diyce may be the only one that can talk more
• 20:43
Speaker 4: than you do. And I've got to say that in
• 20:45
Speaker 4: the best possible way for our good friend Ray.
• 20:46
  Speaker 2: Thank you.
• 20:48
Speaker 4: I'm sure Ray explained this to you. In West Virginia, servant,
• 20:51
Speaker 4: it was a state holiday talking about juneteen, and then
• 20:54
Speaker 4: it was tomorrow is a state holiday, or at least
• 20:57
Speaker 4: observance of it. West Virginia days actually on Saturday, but
• 21:00
Speaker 4: it's going to be observed tomorrow. Some counties and towns
• 21:04
Speaker 4: are going to give Monday off for Juneteenth, which is
• 21:06
Speaker 4: a federal holiday, not all it's you know, and it's
• 21:09
Speaker 4: always a little weird when you have holidays on weekends anyway,
• 21:11
Speaker 4: and when they get observed. But as an outsider looking in,
• 21:17
Speaker 4: what do you think of the way that our state
• 21:20
Speaker 4: government has handled I'm sure Rays kind of caught you
• 21:23
Speaker 4: up on it, on the way that it's been handled
• 21:25
Speaker 4: in West Virginia, because as a PR guy to me,
• 21:28
Speaker 4: I said, number one, it's the wrong thing to do,
• 21:30
Speaker 4: and number two, it's bad optics.
• 21:32
Speaker 12: How about that, you know? And I can't see real
• 21:35
Speaker 12: will and it's still bad optics. Yeah, it's not good.
• 21:38
Speaker 12: I mean, think about the Martin Luther King Junior Holiday
• 21:41
Speaker 12: and Arizona, how they held out right and then public
• 21:45
Speaker 12: Enemy a rap group for those of you who are
• 21:48
Speaker 12: only stuck on Taylor Swift or a little UZI vert
• 21:51
Speaker 12: a rap group by the time I get to Arizona,
• 21:54
Speaker 12: right playing on by the time I get to Phoenix
• 21:56
Speaker 12: by the great Glenn Campbell. Let's just the great Glenn
• 21:59
Speaker 12: Campbell and Isaac Hayes remade the song. Anyway, you didn't
• 22:04
Speaker 12: expect a history lesson in music, But here we are. Here,
• 22:06
Speaker 12: we are so no, it's not good. You know, it's
• 22:09
Speaker 12: like when the King birthday and other places, Well, let's
• 22:12
Speaker 12: celebrate Roberty Lee Day. So we have to vitiate, we
• 22:16
Speaker 12: have to undermine, we have to distort, We have to
• 22:18
Speaker 12: get rid of the central fact that the reason we
• 22:21
Speaker 12: celebrate that holiday in the first place is because we
• 22:24
Speaker 12: failed to celebrate a significant portion of our population that
• 22:28
Speaker 12: were loyal and devoted and committed to the very ideas.
• 22:33
Speaker 12: We didn't storm the Capitol on January sixth, we didn't
• 22:37
Speaker 12: besmirch the legitimacy of democracy and just because the election
• 22:42
Speaker 12: didn't turn out the way we wanted. We didn't beat
• 22:44
Speaker 12: people down, we didn't threaten people, we didn't kill people,
• 22:48
Speaker 12: we didn't really disobey the law. So this way of
• 22:53
Speaker 12: handling it in West Virginia is unfortunate, it's tragic. It's
• 22:58
Speaker 12: representative of so much of what Gorvidal called living in
• 23:01
Speaker 12: the United States of amnesia. We are addicted to forgetfulness.
• 23:06
Speaker 12: We don't want to confront that past. And it's ironic
• 23:10
Speaker 12: when you look at the New York Times, you know,
• 23:12
Speaker 12: nonfiction list of best selling books.
• 23:15
Speaker 2: A lot of that stuff has to do with history.
• 23:16
Speaker 12: But when it you know, we celebrate what happened in
• 23:19
Speaker 12: the Confederacy, we talk about what happened in the Civil War,
• 23:21
Speaker 12: we talk about World War Two, we talk about the
• 23:23
Speaker 12: Greatest Generation. But boy, when it comes to race, I
• 23:26
Speaker 12: don't want that. Let's not have that history. So we
• 23:29
Speaker 12: want history, except we want a narrow version of history.
• 23:32
Speaker 12: And unfortunately what we've done in West Virginia is cherry
• 23:35
Speaker 12: pick and try to get around the central effect that
• 23:39
Speaker 12: the delayal of information for a significant population of peoples
• 23:43
Speaker 12: was representative metaphoric perhaps of what happens often in American
• 23:47
Speaker 12: society when it comes to issues of race and ethnicity
• 23:50
  Speaker 12: as well.
• 23:52
Speaker 4: Can I read a text to you? Because I have
• 23:54
Speaker 4: some some and Ray'll Tall is a regular listener to
• 23:56
Speaker 4: my show, I'm sure you will be going forward. Yes,
• 23:59
Speaker 4: is that I have all types on this show. I
• 24:01
Speaker 4: have and I have and I have people. People will
• 24:03
Speaker 4: tell me Ray and you can back me up. And
• 24:05
Speaker 4: these people say, at Dave Allen, he's too liberal. Well
• 24:07
Speaker 4: that day Vallen, he's too conservative. So I guess I
• 24:09
Speaker 4: must I must be job.
• 24:11
Speaker 2: Don't read that text I sent you. I said you
• 24:13
  Speaker 2: were handsome.
• 24:13
Speaker 4: I'll go ahead, but you also said you couldn't see.
• 24:17
Speaker 4: So let's keep that mind, all right. Text says wait
• 24:19
Speaker 4: a minute, you take issue with someone freely speaking their
• 24:22
Speaker 4: opinion instead, Michelle Obama is a man when Democrats refuse
• 24:26
Speaker 4: to describe what a woman or a man are. You
• 24:28
Speaker 4: guys have been calling conservatives nazis, Hitler's, racist, homophobes, transphobe,
• 24:33
Speaker 4: etcetera for decades now, so don't come in with us
• 24:35
Speaker 4: both sides now. This is why myself and thousands of
• 24:38
Speaker 4: others have left the Democratic Party over the years.
• 24:40
Speaker 12: First of all, you have been talking about transphobia for decades, sir,
• 24:44
  Speaker 12: calm down.
• 24:44
Speaker 2: You don't even know what the word means.
• 24:46
Speaker 12: Until ten years ago, most of us didn't let me
• 24:49
Speaker 12: speak for my present company include all right, So stop that, sir.
• 24:53
Speaker 12: And then when you about you guys, why don't you
• 24:56
Speaker 12: deal with the history of white supremacy. Let's just let's
• 24:58
Speaker 12: get rid of all that other stuff. What about the
• 24:59
Speaker 12: sen point I made, the central point I made about
• 25:02
Speaker 12: why many people left the Democratic Party. If you do
• 25:04
Speaker 12: a historic analysis, it was because of the Southern Bargain
• 25:08
Speaker 12: that Richard Nixon engaged and engineered and the mass deportation.
• 25:14
Speaker 12: The mass exodus of white folk from the Democratic Party
• 25:18
Speaker 12: had to do with their resentment that black people were
• 25:20
Speaker 12: being given in nineteen sixty four, or at least acknowledged
• 25:23
Speaker 12: to have the right the Civil Rights Bill sixty four,
• 25:26
Speaker 12: the Voting Rights Act in sixty five, the Fair Housing
• 25:28
Speaker 12: Act in sixty eight, So.
• 25:30
Speaker 2: Sir, do your history.
• 25:31
Speaker 12: The mass exodus of white people from the Democratic Party
• 25:34
Speaker 12: had to do everything with its anti blackness, its refusal
• 25:38
Speaker 12: to acknowledge the central proposition that black people have been
• 25:41
Speaker 12: disadvantaged systemically and that white privilege has been put in
• 25:45
Speaker 12: its place, and what I mean by white privilege is
• 25:47
Speaker 12: not that every white person can go to Harvard Yell
• 25:50
Speaker 12: at Princeton. It means that the people who go to
• 25:52
Speaker 12: Harvard Yell and Princeton tended to be white. So the
• 25:54
Speaker 12: point is that when we talk about these issues, please
• 25:57
Speaker 12: don't get caught up in presentice argument. We can talk
• 26:00
Speaker 12: about transphobia and homophobia. We can speak about you guys
• 26:03
Speaker 12: on the left and you guys on the right. Why
• 26:06
Speaker 12: don't you deal with the central fact of white supremacy
• 26:08
Speaker 12: in America, the resurgence of the hate for the other. Yes,
• 26:11
Speaker 12: this UFC fighter has the right to say what he
• 26:14
Speaker 12: has to say, and we have the right to oppose it,
• 26:16
Speaker 12: and we have the right to say that it is idiotic.
• 26:18
Speaker 12: We have the right to say that we have a
• 26:20
Speaker 12: president who's a petulant toddler, who's incapable of acknowledging the
• 26:24
Speaker 12: centrality of rationality, who goes off the hinge and doesn't
• 26:29
Speaker 12: even stick to his own plans, and the way he
• 26:31
Speaker 12: should got us into a war. All you Republicans, since
• 26:34
Speaker 12: you're going to talk about you guys, you Republicans said
• 26:37
Speaker 12: you're going to vote for a man who said I'll
• 26:38
Speaker 12: never get you into war, and I'll be darned what
• 26:41
Speaker 12: has he done got us into war? He licks the
• 26:43
Speaker 12: boots of Putin, He capitulates too fascists around the world
• 26:47
Speaker 12: because he wants to be a strong man. He's a kleptocrat.
• 26:50
Speaker 12: He is stealing democracy and money before our very eyes.
• 26:53
Speaker 12: He has doubled his net worth in less than a
• 26:56
Speaker 12: year in the presidency. Sir, please tell me Mann the
• 27:00
Speaker 12: white supremacist and the white Christian nationalists have supported him
• 27:04
  Speaker 12: in extraordinary fashions.
• 27:05
Speaker 2: So there's a lot of stuff we could talk about.
• 27:06
Speaker 4: But come on, all right, Well, the textra text back said,
• 27:08
Speaker 4: I'm a fifty two year old.
• 27:09
Speaker 12: Woman, okay, fifty two yearld woman, So sorry many are
• 27:13
Speaker 12: you a fifty two year old white woman.
• 27:15
  Speaker 2: I don't know.
• 27:16
Speaker 12: I'm just I'm assuming and let me let me get
• 27:18
Speaker 12: hold of my own bias and prejudice. If you're a
• 27:21
Speaker 12: fifty two year old woman who's black, then we'd have
• 27:23
  Speaker 12: a different argument. I'd still say it's crazy, but I
• 27:26
Speaker 12: would say, as a fifty two year old, well, fifty
• 27:28
Speaker 12: two year old white woman, I'm sure you've done your history.
• 27:31
Speaker 12: I'm sure you learned this in school. But then again,
• 27:33
  Speaker 12: I'm sure you didn't.
• 27:34
  Speaker 2: I'm sure.
• 27:35
Speaker 12: The fact is that we have been policing black history
• 27:38
Speaker 12: for decades. The textbook writers out of Texas have made
• 27:42
Speaker 12: sure that we now think slavery I wasn't that bad,
• 27:45
Speaker 12: and that there were advantages and virtues. Read round DeSantis's
• 27:48
Speaker 12: notions of slavery are those who informed him in Florida. So, so,
• 27:54
Speaker 12: you're a fifty two yearl white woman, I want you
• 27:56
Speaker 12: to respond to white supremacy. I want you to respond
• 27:58
Speaker 12: to the advantages that were given to white people. I
• 28:01
Speaker 12: want you to respond to the fact that not until
• 28:03
Speaker 12: nineteen sixty five did Jim Crow end. Do you know
• 28:06
Speaker 12: what Jim Crow is, I'm sure you do. And Jim
• 28:08
Speaker 12: Crow was a systematic denial of opportunity to black people
• 28:13
Speaker 12: for no other reason than their race. They were qualified.
• 28:16
Speaker 12: And then let's deal with the fact that we have
• 28:18
Speaker 12: the dumbest, most ill informed white people managing government right now.
• 28:23
Speaker 2: Donald Trump is a dummy.
• 28:26
Speaker 12: Even if you were progressive, or even if you are liberal,
• 28:29
Speaker 12: or even if you are right wing, you got to understand. Look,
• 28:32
Speaker 12: William Buckley was a smart guy. I disagreed with him,
• 28:35
Speaker 12: but he knew what he was talking about. George will
• 28:37
Speaker 12: is a smart guy. I disagree with him, but he
• 28:39
Speaker 12: knows what he's talking about. Donald Trump, Pete, hecxcept some
• 28:42
Speaker 12: of the most incompetent, ill informed, dumb people we've ever
• 28:46
Speaker 12: had in the American government.
• 28:49
Speaker 4: I want to ask you about the change in West Virginia,
• 28:51
Speaker 4: specifically because you talked about the number of people that
• 28:55
Speaker 4: have left a Democratic party in rank back this up to.
• 28:58
Speaker 4: In West Virginia, Democrats were in charge of West Virginia
• 29:01
Speaker 4: for eighty three years, Okay, in twenty fourteen there was
• 29:05
Speaker 4: a revolution whatever, and now we're down to I think
• 29:08
Speaker 4: three counties in West Virginia that are now led by Democrats.
• 29:13
Speaker 4: Boone County of all. Boone County, West Virginia, just south
• 29:16
Speaker 4: of here, which was a county that supported Barack Obama
• 29:19
Speaker 4: in two thousand and eight last week, has now flipped
• 29:22
Speaker 4: from Democrat to Republican. Any comments on that.
• 29:26
Speaker 2: We are gathered here today. He is a minister.
• 29:31
Speaker 12: He is presiding over the funeral. Look, it's tough out
• 29:37
Speaker 12: here in these democratic streets. The local legislatures of many
• 29:44
Speaker 12: not all states, but many states of majority.
• 29:49
Speaker 2: Are helmed by Republican.
• 29:54
Speaker 12: You know, state senates and Republican representatives, and it seems that,
• 30:00
Speaker 12: you know, West Virginia may be going the way of
• 30:01
Speaker 12: all flesh in that sense and flipping over, because look,
• 30:06
Speaker 12: it's very tough out here. But what's interesting about it.
• 30:10
Speaker 12: I think Joe Manchin, was he your senator.
• 30:12
Speaker 4: Here, governor Secretary of State?
• 30:14
  Speaker 10: Yeah?
• 30:15
Speaker 12: Yeah, And if that's the index of what we have
• 30:18
Speaker 12: as a Democrat, it's been pretty tough from the very beginning.
• 30:21
Speaker 12: A lot of Democrats weren't down with the kind of
• 30:23
Speaker 12: Joe Mansion variety, of the Catherine of Senator Cinema's variety.
• 30:29
Speaker 12: And look, you have to deal with where you are.
• 30:31
Speaker 12: Tip O'Neil said, all politics are local. You're in West Virginia.
• 30:34
Speaker 12: You can't be too far to the left because you
• 30:36
Speaker 12: won't even get elected. And if begetting elected is your
• 30:39
Speaker 12: primary concern, then you're not going to adhere to your
• 30:42
Speaker 12: conscience all the way. You're going to talk about what
• 30:44
Speaker 12: I got to do to get back in office. So
• 30:47
  Speaker 12: it's it's unfortunate to me that we don't have a
• 30:50
Speaker 12: greater balance in the sense that people on both sides
• 30:55
Speaker 12: of the aisle. We're not trying to eviscerate right wing
• 30:57
Speaker 12: or Republican brothers and sisters were trying to say that
• 31:00
Speaker 12: can we have some balance, can we have some acknowledgment
• 31:03
Speaker 12: of history and the fact that West Virginia has flipped
• 31:06
Speaker 12: that much. I'm gonna have to dig up John Denver
• 31:08
Speaker 12: and ask him what the hell is going on because
• 31:10
  Speaker 12: this ain't cool.
• 31:12
Speaker 13: Ray tell us about the events going on tonight. So
• 31:15
Speaker 13: this evening we will be at the Civic Center in
• 31:18
Speaker 13: the North Hall. Not little theater, okay, this something's going
• 31:20
Speaker 13: on so much bigger space in the North Hall, North Hall.
• 31:24
Speaker 13: So we're going to be there from six to eight.
• 31:27
Speaker 13: Before that, we will have a reception, just a little
• 31:30
Speaker 13: meet and greet and just a little mingling everything before
• 31:34
Speaker 13: the showtime. That's at again at the Savit Center or
• 31:38
Speaker 13: the coliseum. Yeah, all right, and that's just one of
• 31:41
Speaker 13: the activities. There's a parade going on tomorrow.
• 31:43
Speaker 14: Yes, tomorrow, there will be a parade starting at the
• 31:46
Speaker 14: MAK Center and leading into Lay Street to Transit Mall,
• 31:50
Speaker 14: and then we will have our festivities with local acts
• 31:53
Speaker 14: and local artists at Slack Plaza from noon to four.
• 31:58
Speaker 4: I appreciate you setting this up, mister Whiteing. Not bad
• 32:00
  Speaker 4: for a stealer.
• 32:01
  Speaker 2: Fan. Thank you.
• 32:02
Speaker 14: Also, I want to thank all the sponsors I want
• 32:04
Speaker 14: at the committee for help helping us put us together.
• 32:08
Speaker 14: And again the sponsors, thank you, thank you, thank you.
• 32:11
Speaker 12: And the first hundred people get weed whackers. So come
• 32:15
Speaker 12: on out, come on out and celebrate. We're not talking
• 32:19
Speaker 12: about weed that you smoke. We're talking about weed whackers.
• 32:21
  Speaker 12: That's a joke, y'all. So you know I'm not going
• 32:23
Speaker 12: to get your weed whacker. You might get some free
• 32:25
  Speaker 12: chicken wings though.
• 32:26
  Speaker 2: Come on out.
• 32:28
Speaker 4: It's been a pleasure to have you on the show, sir,
• 32:30
Speaker 4: Thank you much. I really appreciate it that. Mister Whiting,
• 32:32
Speaker 4: always a pleasure to.
• 32:33
Speaker 2: See you as well. Thank you, thank you for having me.
• 32:35
Speaker 4: All Right, we're going to take a break, and you know,
• 32:37
  Speaker 4: there's a lot of bikes in town. I don't know
• 32:38
Speaker 4: if you noticed, sister or not, there's a heck of
• 32:40
Speaker 4: a lot of bicycles in town.
• 32:41
  Speaker 2: Man.
• 32:41
Speaker 4: It's getting rained. They're getting rained on right now. But

• 35:50
Speaker 4: bashing going on tonight at the Civic Center, so will
• 35:52
Speaker 4: count me out says a texter. Texts, Dave, I listen
• 35:57
Speaker 4: to your show to be informed or entertained. Not this,
• 36:01
Speaker 4: says a tankster text says Florida Guy, Dave, this was
• 36:06
Speaker 4: your worst interview you've ever done by letting this liberal
• 36:09
Speaker 4: rant on the radio. Not once did he say Democrats
• 36:11
Speaker 4: were all the calls to slavery in the Civil War. You, sir,
• 36:14
Speaker 4: hit a new low today, texts Dave. Do you hear
• 36:23
Speaker 4: all of the nastiness coming out of his mouth over
• 36:25
Speaker 4: my opinion? This is what the divisive issue is. This
• 36:28
Speaker 4: is why we cannot have a decent discussion without the snide,
• 36:31
Speaker 4: despicable insults because you don't like other opinions. Grow up,
• 36:35
Speaker 4: says the texter. Let me address something that the Florida
• 36:39
Speaker 4: guy there said, And I appreciate I have no idea
• 36:41
Speaker 4: who Florida guy is, but Florida Guy, I appreciate you
• 36:43
Speaker 4: because you text the show a lot, and he always
• 36:45
Speaker 4: here's well, I guess it's the guy always starts by
• 36:47
Speaker 4: saying Florida Guy. When I started doing this show six
• 36:51
Speaker 4: years ago, I decided to take the show in another direction.
• 36:56
Speaker 4: God bless Danny Jones, Danny and our great friends. But
• 37:00
Speaker 4: I wanted to do some things a little bit differently,
• 37:02
Speaker 4: and one of those things I wanted to do was
• 37:03
Speaker 4: I wanted to offer space and time airtime on the
• 37:07
Speaker 4: show for anybody with any opinion. And here's the thing.
• 37:12
Speaker 4: June tenth is a federal holiday. Okay, it is going
• 37:15
Speaker 4: to be celebrated here in Charleston. This gentleman is one
• 37:23
Speaker 4: of the more well known commentators, and he's in town
• 37:26
Speaker 4: and he's speaking. And when someone reach out to me,
• 37:30
Speaker 4: like my good friend Ray Whiteing reaches out to me
• 37:32
Speaker 4: and says, hey, I can maybe get this guy on
• 37:36
Speaker 4: your show. I figured it would be a phone interview.
• 37:38
Speaker 4: We would record it at nine o'clock at night somewhere.
• 37:41
Speaker 4: He brought him in studio, and I appreciate that, and
• 37:45
Speaker 4: I appreciate Ray Whiting for doing that. And I also
• 37:48
Speaker 4: appreciate mister Dyson's opinions. Look, do I agree with everything
• 37:51
  Speaker 4: he said?
• 37:52
  Speaker 3: No?
• 37:53
Speaker 4: Does he agree with everything I said?
• 37:55
  Speaker 1: No.
• 37:56
Speaker 4: But one of the problems that we have, my opinion,
• 37:59
Speaker 4: is that we cannot have a discussion, or at least
• 38:03
Speaker 4: not even a discussion. Man, listen to the other side.
• 38:07
Speaker 4: That's one of the problems I think we have as
• 38:09
Speaker 4: a society. We don't even want to listen to the
• 38:12
Speaker 4: other side. I learn a heck of a lot more
• 38:15
Speaker 4: by listening, keeping my mouth shut, and listening to people
• 38:18
Speaker 4: I don't agree with that I ever could about people
• 38:20
Speaker 4: I agree with. And so if you don't like different
• 38:25
Speaker 4: ideas being presented in here, look, we have a lot
• 38:27
Speaker 4: of fun on this show. We get dogs and cats adopted,
• 38:30
Speaker 4: and we do all these things. But if you don't
• 38:34
Speaker 4: like different ideas being presented and something that may challenge
• 38:37
Speaker 4: you from what you think, then perhaps this is not
• 38:39
Speaker 4: the show for you. Because what I want to do
• 38:42
Speaker 4: is I want to make people think. And if it
• 38:45
Speaker 4: puts your heels in the ground and makes you ingrained
• 38:49
Speaker 4: even more about what you already.
• 38:51
Speaker 11: Think, so be it.
• 38:52
Speaker 4: At least you can say you listen to some other thoughts.
• 38:55
Speaker 4: And I don't know why in the hell we are
• 38:57
Speaker 4: so afraid of listening to others people and what other
• 39:01
Speaker 4: people have to say, whether you agree or disagree. And
• 39:04
Speaker 4: by the way, some of you were upset about the
• 39:06
Speaker 4: gentleman I had on I had just as many people
• 39:09
Speaker 4: when I have had far right wing people. I'm the
• 39:11
Speaker 4: guy that interviewed Derrick Evans. Remember that, Remember me putting
• 39:15
Speaker 4: why hell, how could you platform Derreck Evans because he
• 39:19
Speaker 4: had a voice, because he wanted to say something. And
• 39:21
Speaker 4: I couldn't be any more different than derreck Evans if
• 39:23
Speaker 4: I tried. You know how I feel about January sixth.
• 39:26
Speaker 4: I put him on the show. I put State Democratic
• 39:30
Speaker 4: Party Chair Mike Pushkin. I put State Republican Party Chair
• 39:33
Speaker 4: Josh Holstein all on the show. I put a mayor
• 39:37
Speaker 4: on the show that from time to time people say,
• 39:39
Speaker 4: why do you put the mayor? Because she's the mayor.
• 39:41
Speaker 4: That's why in the next mayor, if it's not her,
• 39:44
Speaker 4: he or she will be on the show as well.
• 39:46
Speaker 4: You know, that's kind of the way we do things here.
• 39:50
Speaker 4: I'm the guy that took all kinds of holy hell
• 39:52
Speaker 4: because I put Don Blankenship on the air. And you
• 39:53
Speaker 4: know what, if Don Blankenship called me today, I'd put
• 39:55
Speaker 4: Don Blankenship on the air tomorrow as well. But Dave
• 39:59
Speaker 4: Island show in five Any life is bright to you?
• 40:00
Speaker 4: Impired by the all new generations for the hurricane visit
• 40:03
Speaker 4: Generations forward dot Com. Look who's here, it's Matt Sutton.
• 40:05
Speaker 4: How you doing, my friend?
• 40:07
  Speaker 18: I'm doing good, buddy. I don't I was in a
• 40:09
Speaker 18: meeting to get to hear everything, but all I say
• 40:12
Speaker 18: is amen. That was great, buddy. I mean, that's exactly
• 40:14
Speaker 18: what we should be talking about. I'm happy that you
• 40:17
Speaker 18: had doctor Tyson on. That's why I love listening to
• 40:19
Speaker 18: your show. I mean, it really is like hearing what
• 40:21
Speaker 18: other people have to say. It's not always easy, but boy,
• 40:25
Speaker 18: it's important and it's more important today. You said it
• 40:28
Speaker 18: better than anybody else could say it, so I'll leave
• 40:30
Speaker 18: it there. But thanks for that, man, that was good.
• 40:33
Speaker 2: Well, I don't know why we why.
• 40:36
Speaker 4: I mean, again, you have every right to listen to
• 40:39
Speaker 4: this or anything else. Do you have every right to
• 40:40
Speaker 4: start it off as somebody who tends to be a
• 40:42
Speaker 4: little bit more libertarian in my views? The older I
• 40:47
Speaker 4: get it because I just don't really care what people do.
• 40:50
Speaker 4: I mean, I really don't care. It's none of my business.
• 40:53
Speaker 4: But this doesn't mean I'm going to only listen to
• 40:55
Speaker 4: people who agree with me. I'm wanna listen to everybody.
• 40:58
Speaker 4: I would much I would much rather listen to somebody
• 41:01
Speaker 4: who's the polar opposite of me.
• 41:03
Speaker 18: Well, I'm the same way, I think because I think
• 41:04
Speaker 18: it's important, because I think it's the only way to.
• 41:07
Speaker 18: And I sometimes get accused of being a devil's advocate
• 41:09
Speaker 18: to try and take other positions, and people like, well,
• 41:11
Speaker 18: what do you really think? And I was like, if
• 41:13
Speaker 18: everybody thinks the same, then it's really boring. And then
• 41:15
Speaker 18: how do you actually truly believe and know what you
• 41:18
Speaker 18: believe if nobody ever challenges it?
• 41:20
Speaker 2: And I think that's really important.
• 41:21
Speaker 18: I think that's what your show does, like put people
• 41:23
Speaker 18: on where you listen to it and you're like, no,
• 41:25
Speaker 18: I don't agree with that person, and this is why,
• 41:28
Speaker 18: and you in your own mind you can.
• 41:29
Speaker 2: You can counter their arguments, but it's not just a no.
• 41:33
Speaker 18: I don't want to hear what they have to say,
• 41:35
Speaker 18: because then we get siloed like we are today and
• 41:37
Speaker 18: we end up with the world we're in where it's
• 41:39
Speaker 18: just like to your point that nobody can have a
• 41:41
  Speaker 18: conversation anymore.
• 41:42
Speaker 4: Can I tell you about my really weird idea? And
• 41:44
Speaker 4: we'll promise, I promise we'll talk about the bike event, right,
• 41:46
Speaker 4: so you know I'm going into the Broadcasting Hall of Fame. Yeah,
• 41:50
Speaker 4: although architectures that may that may be revoked, I don't know.
• 41:53
  Speaker 2: I doubt it.
• 41:54
Speaker 4: In October I got this idea that I want to
• 41:56
Speaker 4: rent a limo. I'm gonna call my buddy Tim Morris
• 41:58
Speaker 4: Channel Limousine, and I want to rent a limo and
• 42:01
Speaker 4: I want to get I want to put in that limo.
• 42:03
Speaker 4: I'm We'll put in Mike Pushkin, and I'm gonna put
• 42:06
Speaker 4: in Greg Thomas, and I'm gonna put in maybe Mike
• 42:11
Speaker 4: Stewart's uh, And I'm just going to go all around
• 42:15
Speaker 4: and I'm going to get the most the most differing
• 42:17
Speaker 4: opinions that we can get, put them in a limo
• 42:20
Speaker 4: by eight deep, and we're going to drive from Charleston
• 42:22
Speaker 4: to the Museum of Radio and Television with the Hall
• 42:25
Speaker 4: of Fame inductions are going on in October, and we're
• 42:29
Speaker 4: going to go down I sixty four and everybody's going
• 42:31
Speaker 4: to be in the limo together.
• 42:32
  Speaker 2: That's great, that's great.
• 42:33
Speaker 18: And here's the thing, good luck And those folks would too, though,
• 42:36
Speaker 18: I mean the people you named would do that, They
• 42:38
Speaker 18: would absolutely do that, absolutely, But people are just so
• 42:41
Speaker 18: quick to and again I know that's not we're here
• 42:42
Speaker 18: talking about, but people are people are so quick to
• 42:44
Speaker 18: do it. I used it perfect example of you know,
• 42:46
Speaker 18: we've got to obviously have their guy coming up on
• 42:48
Speaker 18: the fourth of July and the governor's doing the celebration,
• 42:50
Speaker 18: and after he announced that, everybody comes up because well,
• 42:53
Speaker 18: you know that must make you all mad. We're like, no, actually,
• 42:56
Speaker 18: we've been talking with them, we've been coordinating with them,
• 42:58
Speaker 18: we've been helping them, they've been helping us. And more
• 43:00
Speaker 18: people on trust says more people in Taruston. Why is
• 43:02
Speaker 18: the first assumption that the governor does something during the
• 43:04
Speaker 18: fourth of July that we would be mad. No, we
• 43:06
Speaker 18: all work together on this, and people just it sometimes
• 43:09
Speaker 18: baffles them. So first of all, I think I think
• 43:12
Speaker 18: that's a great idea, and I think all those people
• 43:13
Speaker 18: would get in that car because they'd have a blast.
• 43:15
Speaker 4: Yeah, they'd have a blast, and there might be alcohol involved.
• 43:17
Speaker 4: I'm just saying, well, could be, yeah, not too much.
• 43:21
Speaker 4: All right, Well we're not the ones driving, Okay, Yeah,
• 43:24
Speaker 4: you don't want too much. I want to turn into
• 43:25
Speaker 4: a fight somewhere near to London or something. All right,
• 43:28
Speaker 4: So let's talk about the event. You know, I know
• 43:31
Speaker 4: you're keeping a close eye on the rain. We're keeping
• 43:33
Speaker 4: a close eye on Brian Hughes in there too in
• 43:34
Speaker 4: the studio to see what he's going to do for us.
• 43:36
Speaker 2: Oh, there is yes.
• 43:37
Speaker 4: So everything went well last.
• 43:39
Speaker 18: Night, Everything went great last night, Everything went well on Tuesday.
• 43:44
Speaker 18: Tonight again, if we're talking about traffic, which I'm here
• 43:47
Speaker 18: to talk about, tonight, absolutely mimics last night. So soft
• 43:51
Speaker 18: closure starts about four thirty, hard closure at five o'clock.
• 43:55
Speaker 18: Soft closure and hard closure. Just let me get the
• 43:57
Speaker 18: difference between that is, just because it's a salt we say,
• 44:00
Speaker 18: soft closure doesn't mean there might not be a street
• 44:02
Speaker 18: you can't get down. It just means you can get
• 44:03
Speaker 18: in and out. You still might have to wait a minute,
• 44:06
Speaker 18: but you can still get in and out and you
• 44:07
Speaker 18: can still maneuver around. Once we have that hard closure
• 44:10
Speaker 18: at five again, in that footprint from Lead to the
• 44:13
Speaker 18: Boulevard and Court Street to Hell Street, that is hard closure.
• 44:17
Speaker 18: You're stuck tonight, so that tonight will be exactly the
• 44:19
Speaker 18: same as yesterday. Again, similar advice, Start to leave downtown
• 44:24
Speaker 18: if you're not going to stay around four fifteen, four thirty,
• 44:27
Speaker 18: make sure you're out by five. And then we hit
• 44:29
Speaker 18: into the road races over the weekend Friday, Saturday, Sunday,
• 44:34
Speaker 18: which are pretty much all the same. The key things
• 44:36
Speaker 18: to remember for that Friday Saturday Sunday, Canaal Boulevard will
• 44:40
Speaker 18: be closed from Clindenon to Wartz Avenue, Clinton Street to
• 44:43
Speaker 18: Warts Avenue. The Canal Boulevard shut down, the south Side
• 44:46
Speaker 18: Bridge is shut down to motorists. You have to use
• 44:48
Speaker 18: Ferry Street for the south Side Bridge access, but the
• 44:52
Speaker 18: south Side Bridge will be shut down, and we will
• 44:55
Speaker 18: have rolling closures in place throughout the entire race route.
• 44:58
Speaker 18: And if you're in the race route, go to our
• 45:00
Speaker 18: go to the city's website, go to the CVB's website,
• 45:03
Speaker 18: go to the city's Facebook page. There's a ton of
• 45:05
Speaker 18: places to get the information about what that means. But
• 45:08
Speaker 18: all of those along the race routes are soft closures,
• 45:11
Speaker 18: and that just means you might have to wait a
• 45:12
Speaker 18: minute for the bike traffic to get past in order
• 45:15
Speaker 18: for it to be safe for you to go through,
• 45:18
Speaker 18: but you'll either have a volunteer or police officer that
• 45:20
Speaker 18: they will let you through. So Friday Saturday Sunday, hard
• 45:23
Speaker 18: closures are at a minimum, really the boulevard from Clinton
• 45:27
Speaker 18: in to Wartz and then the south Side Bridge. Other
• 45:30
Speaker 18: than that you're going to see soft closures, and really
• 45:32
Speaker 18: that is just about it. Might take you a few
• 45:33
Speaker 18: extra minutes to get through. To move through that way, the.
• 45:38
Speaker 4: Manim will have to jump in air, take a break,
• 45:40
Speaker 4: finish your thought and I'll take a break. Then I'm
• 45:41
Speaker 4: gonna have you stick around.
• 45:42
Speaker 18: But go okay, yeah, absolutely. The only thing I'm gonna
• 45:44
Speaker 18: say is is the only exception, and we make this clear.
• 45:46
Speaker 18: The only exception to the soft closures on the route
• 45:48
Speaker 18: is Oakridge. Oakridge. You cannot get off of oak Ridge
• 45:52
Speaker 18: onto the Greenbriar Street. And the reason for that is
• 45:54
Speaker 18: the bikes come down too fast and we can't time
• 45:57
Speaker 18: it perfectly. So if you try to get from Oakridge
• 45:59
Speaker 18: to Greenbriar Street, you're gonna get stuck. You can't get
• 46:02
Speaker 18: there other than net We'll come back and address the
• 46:04
Speaker 18: rest of it, all right.

• 48:45
Speaker 4: couple of texts here and let's see what do you
• 48:48
Speaker 4: have to say about them. One of them wanted to
• 48:50
Speaker 4: know if Charleston would be moving the homeless people. The
• 48:54
Speaker 4: question is will Charleston PD be doing their annual homeless
• 48:57
Speaker 4: round up before regarded this year.
• 48:59
Speaker 18: No, never done an annual homeless round up before Regatta.
• 49:03
Speaker 18: We do have communication with our homeless population to let
• 49:07
Speaker 18: them know what's coming through. Unfortunately, a lot of times
• 49:11
Speaker 18: our homeless population can experience folks who aren't super happy
• 49:14
Speaker 18: to see them or have something to say with them,
• 49:16
Speaker 18: especially when alcohol can get involved. So we give them
• 49:18
Speaker 18: a warning that you know people are coming through and
• 49:21
Speaker 18: that you know they can have all the variety of
• 49:23
Speaker 18: services in town. But that narrative that the homeless sweep looksten.
• 49:28
Speaker 18: We do warrant sweep throughout the entire year, and that's
• 49:31
Speaker 18: what the police department does. That if folks have warrants
• 49:33
Speaker 18: out for their arrest, then the police department has to
• 49:35
Speaker 18: do what they have to do. But no, there's never
• 49:37
Speaker 18: been an annual homeless sweep and there never will be.
• 49:40
Speaker 4: My attendance is a tech with the bike race.

  Speaker 2: Last night.
• 49:42
Speaker 4: Event it self was great, a lot of fun to watch,
• 49:44
Speaker 4: but the city looks bad. Park near Davis Park in
• 49:46
Speaker 4: Summer Street looks awful, dead plants, dead flowers. It's Americas
• 49:49
Speaker 4: two hundred and fiftieth year. We're working hard on it.
• 49:52
Speaker 4: It was a rough winner, and honestly, the rough winter
• 49:56
Speaker 4: led to a lot of difficult times. Especially it was
• 49:59
Speaker 4: related to you utility construction downtown. If you've been downtown
• 50:02
Speaker 4: in the last couple of months, you can know that
• 50:03
Speaker 4: we've had a lot of utility work. We've had to
• 50:05
Speaker 4: clean a lot of that up. That's put a lot
• 50:07
Speaker 4: of things on pause. Davis Park is one in which
• 50:11
Speaker 4: we're working on again. If you've been downtown a lot,
• 50:14
Speaker 4: you'll know the Department Health Human Resources has been doing
• 50:16
Speaker 4: a lot of work to both those buildings, the Diamond
• 50:19
Speaker 4: Building and by Davis Park.
• 50:20
Speaker 18: So it's been hard with that construction. Our Beautification Commission
• 50:23
Speaker 18: actually met with May Goodwin and myself two weeks ago
• 50:26
Speaker 18: for their plan for Davis Park. So yeah, I mean
• 50:28
Speaker 18: we're working hard we got it as much as we could.
• 50:31
Speaker 18: A lot of utility construction took place and that and
• 50:34
Speaker 18: roads took precedent. But things are starting to come together.
• 50:36
Speaker 18: I think it really is starting to come back together.
• 50:39
Speaker 18: It was a rough winner, but feel good about where
• 50:41
Speaker 18: things were. But if there's any particular areas you know,
• 50:44
Speaker 18: please feel free to reach out to our office and
• 50:46
Speaker 18: let us know because it's important to know what's there.
• 50:48
Speaker 18: But yeah, we've been working on that. Coming out of
• 50:51
Speaker 18: a rough winter was tough, but we feel good about
• 50:53
Speaker 18: where we are and where we're heading into the summer.
