- 0:16Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome everybody to episode one hundred of Cards
- 0:21Speaker 1: and Categories. I am Mike Coolard of Rasball, joined as
- 0:24Speaker 1: always by my very good friend Jeremy Brewer. Awesome from Rasball.
- 0:28Speaker 1: That is right, that's one hundred. That's triple digits. Somebody
- 0:32Speaker 1: call up Gray, somebody call up Truss. They're gonna have
- 0:35Speaker 1: to change all the coding in the background to add
- 0:37Speaker 1: that extra digit to this podcast. Don't want to screw
- 0:40Speaker 1: anything up ye two K style. So congratulations, dude, we
- 0:44Speaker 1: did it. We reached terrible digits.
- 0:46Speaker 2: I am amazed, excited, proud, and many other adjectives that
- 0:51Speaker 2: can't be said on the air. But I'm glad, glad
- 0:55Speaker 2: to be here, excited, another good show. Hope those listen
- 1:01Speaker 2: enjoy episode one hundred as much as we're going to.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Yeah, and you could have viewed some of those words.
- 1:06Speaker 1: That could maybe be my next level up in podcast
- 1:09Speaker 1: editing is figuring out how to do the bleeps, because
- 1:11Speaker 1: that'd be kind of a fun adventure. Then we could
- 1:13Speaker 1: really get wild on here. But anyways, yes, thank you
- 1:18Speaker 1: all out there. We are doing episode one hundred here
- 1:21Speaker 1: and to celebrate, we're going back to our roots. If
- 1:23Speaker 1: you recall when we launched this podcast two years ago,
- 1:28Speaker 1: we started with the foundation of having both a card
- 1:31Speaker 1: section and a category section. This was actually used to
- 1:34Speaker 1: be a three act play instead of the normal two
- 1:36Speaker 1: act play we've gotten into. We're going back to it
- 1:39Speaker 1: this week, so we're gonna do three acts for you again. Here,
- 1:42Speaker 1: we're going to do the news and notes. Then we're
- 1:44Speaker 1: going to discuss players that we expect to crack the
- 1:47Speaker 1: top one hundred hitters in twenty twenty six, since Jeremy
- 1:50Speaker 1: is our Rasball Top one hundred Hitters writer, so figured
- 1:55Speaker 1: he's the best person to have that discussion with obviously.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Then we're going to have a special card section and
- 2:00Speaker 1: where we talk about just one hundred cards that we
- 2:04Speaker 1: really love, maybe mean something specially either to the hobby
- 2:07Speaker 1: or to us, and we're gonna put those in the
- 2:10Speaker 1: card PCs. So we've got some fun ones. We'll interpret
- 2:13Speaker 1: card number one hundred in a couple different ways, so
- 2:16Speaker 1: you will see that in the third act. But before
- 2:19Speaker 1: we get into our news and notes, I do want
- 2:20Speaker 1: to say thank you out there to everybody who has listened.
- 2:23Speaker 1: If you haven't done so already, certainly rate review, subscribe
- 2:27Speaker 1: to this podcast where you're listening to us. This is
- 2:30Speaker 1: a big momentous time for us, given through two years
- 2:34Speaker 1: and getting to this triple digits. So we do want
- 2:36Speaker 1: to shout out and thank our fantasy Master Lothario Gray
- 2:42Speaker 1: Albright out there for giving us this opportunity, and our
- 2:45Speaker 1: fearless editor at Rasball Truss. He runs the RCL updates
- 2:50Speaker 1: every Tuesday, and he's been a great partner as we've
- 2:53Speaker 1: been getting into this podcast as well. We've had lots
- 2:56Speaker 1: of great guests over the couple of years that we've
- 2:58Speaker 1: been together in terms of if you want to go
- 3:00Speaker 1: back to some of our preseason previews, you'll see lots
- 3:03Speaker 1: of rasball stars that have been writing over the years.
- 3:06Speaker 1: We've also had the Itch on for example for some
- 3:10Speaker 1: prospect talk, and lots of other folks from the industry
- 3:14Speaker 1: that I especially met at First Pitch Ariazon the last year.
- 3:16Speaker 1: So I'm going out again this year. If you are
- 3:18Speaker 1: looking to be there, it's going to be during the
- 3:20Speaker 1: All Star Game for First Pitch Arizona. This time right
- 3:23Speaker 1: across the parking lot from the hotel will be at.
- 3:26Speaker 1: It'll be much easier to get to and from that game.
- 3:28Speaker 1: I'm really excited for it. But with all that, we
- 3:31Speaker 1: are speaking here on Wednesday, July twenty third, let's get
- 3:35Speaker 1: into some news and notes since we last talked last week.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Unless I did you have any separate shout outs that
- 3:42Speaker 1: you want to send out there, I know I kind
- 3:44Speaker 1: of railroaded over you and just kind of did it
- 3:48Speaker 1: all myself.
- 3:49Speaker 2: No, I agree with everything you said. Much love to
- 3:53Speaker 2: the Rasball family. This allowed us to do this and
- 3:56Speaker 2: took a chance on us. Maybe they're still taking a
- 3:58Speaker 2: chance on a one hundred episodes. Then they're like, we'll
- 4:00Speaker 2: still see if this thing's gonna work out. Then they
- 4:02Speaker 2: just kind of forgot we're doing this. I'm not quite
- 4:04Speaker 2: sure which, but either way, I'm very happy that they
- 4:06Speaker 2: put up with us for this long and you know,
- 4:09Speaker 2: fill in the gaps and we can't be there, join
- 4:11Speaker 2: us for all the fun preseason talks. Every time we
- 4:13Speaker 2: bring a guest on as an absolute blast. So thanks
- 4:16Speaker 2: for everybody for sticking around. Thank you especially to the
- 4:18Speaker 2: listeners that are listening and giving us the platform to
- 4:22Speaker 2: have fun and talk about what we love to talk about,
- 4:24Speaker 2: which is baseball from a fantas perspective of a car
- 4:27Speaker 2: perspective from pretty much any angle. Absolutely glad to have
- 4:31Speaker 2: you along the ride. So with that, let's get into
- 4:34Speaker 2: the news and notes. I'm not going to start that
- 4:36Speaker 2: because I know you have big, big news you want
- 4:39Speaker 2: to cover.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly. I think this preemps anything else that we
- 4:42Speaker 1: maybe even need to talk about for the rest of
- 4:44Speaker 1: the year. We finally did it. Forty five year old
- 4:47Speaker 1: Rich Hill debuted last night for the Kansas City Royals,
- 4:50Speaker 1: making it the fourteenth team on his career, tying Edwin
- 4:54Speaker 1: Jackson for the most teams played for in a career.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Now we just got to get to number fifteen, which
- 5:00Speaker 1: we have tried to do a couple times in this podcast.
- 5:03Speaker 1: But he is entering the immaculate grid pantheon right next
- 5:08Speaker 1: to Edwin Jackson, will be able to be used in
- 5:11Speaker 1: the most team cross squares possible With Edwin. It was
- 5:15Speaker 1: a socio debut. I mean, he is forty five years
- 5:17Speaker 1: old and throwing a seventy eight stuff plus fast Paul
- 5:21Speaker 1: up there is what it clocked in at. He's went
- 5:23Speaker 1: five innings, only gave up one run, only one strikeout,
- 5:27Speaker 1: but it has been I guess it was one earned run.
- 5:30Speaker 1: It was three runs in total, No Taters, though kept
- 5:33Speaker 1: good control, only allowed six hits. So did you catch
- 5:37Speaker 1: any of this performance and anything that you have to
- 5:39Speaker 1: say to Rich Hill, who I know is an avid
- 5:42Speaker 1: listener out there.
- 5:44Speaker 2: I know I didn't catch the performance that we get
- 5:47Speaker 2: back on more of the highlights, but hey, we have
- 5:51Speaker 2: to call out that rich Hill's fastball was the fastest
- 5:53Speaker 2: it's been in five years. I think we're talking about
- 5:56Speaker 2: point one miles per hour. But hey, he's back at
- 5:59Speaker 2: his life, you know, mid twenties fastball velocity. Knowing that
- 6:02Speaker 2: rich Hill never really got above ninety two, so sitting
- 6:06Speaker 2: here eighty eight point eight is actually not too far
- 6:09Speaker 2: off his his career number. So good to see that
- 6:11Speaker 2: he's still pumping him in there. He's not going all
- 6:14Speaker 2: Jamie Moyer on us and dropping him to low eighties
- 6:16Speaker 2: or anything like that. So, hey, what's one more team,
- 6:19Speaker 2: so we'll see how long he sticks around. It's it's
- 6:23Speaker 2: not inconceivable that rich Hill finds himself on another team
- 6:27Speaker 2: still this year seems like this is the kind of
- 6:29Speaker 2: guy that might get a DFA before too long, if
- 6:33Speaker 2: anybody gets healthy and then just finds himself on another roster.
- 6:36Speaker 2: But kudos to rich Hill. Finding a way to keep
- 6:38Speaker 2: going at age forty five.
- 6:40Speaker 1: Yeah, it is gonna be awesome just to kind of
- 6:42Speaker 1: see how much longer this goes, because yeah, I thought
- 6:45Speaker 1: he was gonna be done a couple of years ago
- 6:48Speaker 1: just to kind of like retire and enjoy not being
- 6:51Speaker 1: on the road, but I guess he can can't avoid
- 6:53Speaker 1: the adrenaline of being out there on the mound and
- 6:56Speaker 1: just really loves it. So I'm excited to see where
- 6:58Speaker 1: it goes with Rachel. Some of the most fun stuff
- 7:01Speaker 1: that I've been seeing is everywhere on social media across
- 7:04Speaker 1: the baseball landscape, they've been putting up pictures of rookie
- 7:07Speaker 1: rich Hill next to current forty five year old rich Hill,
- 7:11Speaker 1: and just like it is so long. I mean he
- 7:15Speaker 1: he debuted back when we were graduating high school, so like,
- 7:18Speaker 1: that's how how long he's been around doing this. It's
- 7:21Speaker 1: so so impressive. Okay, let's get into some of those
- 7:25Speaker 1: news notes we will. I will throw out there that
- 7:28Speaker 1: like a lot of m will be trade rumors right
- 7:30Speaker 1: now is actual legit trade rumors, So we're gonna kind
- 7:35Speaker 1: of avoid that. We're gonna focus on those after the
- 7:38Speaker 1: trade deadline, when we actually have some fantasy implications instead
- 7:41Speaker 1: of theorizing where players might go. The other thing that's
- 7:44Speaker 1: really hitting MLB trade rumors right now, just because I
- 7:47Speaker 1: want to throw it out. I know you've seen it
- 7:48Speaker 1: a little bit in our auto neew league is people
- 7:50Speaker 1: have been starting to find that the twenty twenty five
- 7:53Speaker 1: draftees has started to sign. And the way that most
- 7:56Speaker 1: of the fantasy back ends of these websites work is
- 8:01Speaker 1: that once a player actually officially signs a contract with
- 8:04Speaker 1: his team, that's when they're added into the player pool.
- 8:07Speaker 1: So just to call out, if you're in the fastest
- 8:09Speaker 1: finger like Dynasty League, or if you are in an
- 8:12Speaker 1: auto new league, keep track of that because you can
- 8:15Speaker 1: sneak players through. I think I know I've done it
- 8:18Speaker 1: with CBS when I picked up White Langford like right
- 8:21Speaker 1: after he signed and there was like a little gap
- 8:24Speaker 1: before our fab window that I found the slivery to
- 8:27Speaker 1: be able to pick him up. But wanted to call
- 8:29Speaker 1: that out because players like Kate Anderson and Liam Doyle
- 8:33Speaker 1: Ethan Holliday have signed officially and should be entering those
- 8:36Speaker 1: player pools. So I how much do you have it
- 8:40Speaker 1: on your bid for those players in an auter new league.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Just tell me so we can get over with.
- 8:44Speaker 2: You know me, I threw a big old high bid
- 8:46Speaker 2: on the nineteen year old eighteen year old's seventeen year
- 8:51Speaker 2: olds with Will. It's right. So that's that's called a
- 8:56Speaker 2: long term investment in those leagues. Sometimes it works, sometimes
- 8:59Speaker 2: it doesn't work out. I'll give you the little nugget here.
- 9:02Speaker 2: Anybody listening if I actually don't think this will post
- 9:04Speaker 2: before some of those auctions end. But I am not
- 9:07Speaker 2: too much in on the on the high school players
- 9:10Speaker 2: at this point in time. If I'm in, it's just
- 9:14Speaker 2: because I'm having some fun with the auctions as supposed
- 9:17Speaker 2: to Actually one of the guys so been known to
- 9:19Speaker 2: throw some high bids just for fun.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I'm actually I'll reveal my hand. I'm
- 9:25Speaker 1: in on players like Doyle and Anderson just because.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Oh yeah, Doyle anders a different different discussion. It's okay,
- 9:31Speaker 2: the holidays, it's it's the Will. It's that I'm I'm
- 9:34Speaker 2: probably out just the three, four or five year waits.
- 9:38Speaker 2: But guys like Doyle and Anderson, who I think both
- 9:41Speaker 2: have a legitimate shot to be up next year. I
- 9:44Speaker 2: think a little bit better chance with Doyle than Anderson,
- 9:47Speaker 2: just because Anderson is not gonna pitch this year at all,
- 9:51Speaker 2: and so they're gonna They're probably gonna give them some
- 9:53Speaker 2: good time. The miners next year, upper miners next year.
- 9:55Speaker 2: I think Doyle, I haven't seen for sure, but I
- 9:57Speaker 2: think he might get some innings here there, and that'll
- 10:01Speaker 2: give them an upper hand there. So to your point,
- 10:04Speaker 2: I'm in on those guys as well. I'm out of
- 10:06Speaker 2: the long term high school hitters from a new perspective
- 10:11Speaker 2: at least Dynasty comme in.
- 10:12Speaker 1: Oh yeah, absolutely. I mean in terms of where does
- 10:16Speaker 1: that line maybe start getting drawn for you, because there's
- 10:19Speaker 1: a couple of times today that my finger in our
- 10:21Speaker 1: autonew league was huffing over Ava Arquette, who is a
- 10:25Speaker 1: shortstop who came out of Oregon State, went seventh overall
- 10:28Speaker 1: to the Marlins, but is twenty one years old already
- 10:31Speaker 1: six foot five, pretty developed. Is that like when you
- 10:35Speaker 1: do start thinking about the batters to pull the trigger there?
- 10:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I think I have a soft rule about a
- 10:42Speaker 2: two year horizon in an odd new type league, because
- 10:46Speaker 2: you need if you get stick yourself with these guys
- 10:48Speaker 2: as long development windows, you just don't have a chance
- 10:50Speaker 2: to kind of turn them over trade bait. You don't
- 10:53Speaker 2: have a chance to utilize them when you have that
- 10:56Speaker 2: kind of two year window. They have another they're close
- 10:58Speaker 2: enough that some hype can get built up and they
- 11:01Speaker 2: can use as trade ships or you're, you know, train
- 11:04Speaker 2: bringing those guys through your bench and seeing how they
- 11:07Speaker 2: develop and if they hit, great, you know, keep them.
- 11:10Speaker 2: If not, you're able to move on. And so it's
- 11:12Speaker 2: just kind of call like a cash flow thing from
- 11:14Speaker 2: from a prospect perspective, I think the more you're able
- 11:17Speaker 2: to keep them pump through your system and coming out
- 11:19Speaker 2: and seeing what you got every so often, you're in
- 11:21Speaker 2: a much much better position than if you're playing the
- 11:23Speaker 2: long game with a few guys and they just might
- 11:26Speaker 2: not hit. So I'm I'm in on the guys like
- 11:30Speaker 2: our cut. I'd give them a flyer for now, see
- 11:33Speaker 2: how the season ends, and then maybe revisiting the draft
- 11:35Speaker 2: next year if I need to.
- 11:37Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I think that's fair. Okay, Well, I mean
- 11:39Speaker 1: I didn't think we would have too much to talk
- 11:41Speaker 1: about there in those draft picks, but never know where
- 11:43Speaker 1: the strategy changent will take you. So let's get into
- 11:46Speaker 1: some of those news and notes I've been alluding to
- 11:48Speaker 1: the first one we've got right off the bat kind
- 11:50Speaker 1: of broke more so this morning, and that is esoch
- 11:54Speaker 1: Paratus for the Houston Astros third baseman went down on
- 11:59Speaker 1: Sunday with a strange hammy hit. The tendil looked like
- 12:02Speaker 1: it was going to be, you know, your standard two
- 12:04Speaker 1: to four week hamstring strain. Now the Esters are getting
- 12:07Speaker 1: really really detailed with their medical report. They're calling it
- 12:11Speaker 1: pretty significant, So that alludes to maybe something that could
- 12:17Speaker 1: be a month or two, you know what I mean,
- 12:20Speaker 1: where Like it's taking him out almost through the playoffs.
- 12:23Speaker 1: So the Astros have started to enter the fray for
- 12:27Speaker 1: the Aohenio Suarez discussions most likely, and or who knows,
- 12:31Speaker 1: maybe this is also just a ploy to try to
- 12:34Speaker 1: raise the price on the Seattle manners, where there have
- 12:37Speaker 1: been cage with a lot of injuries over the past
- 12:40Speaker 1: couple of years down in Houston. So Parades was an
- 12:44Speaker 1: all star for them, was an absolute monster for fantasy
- 12:48Speaker 1: with a two fifty nine, three, fifty nine, four seventy
- 12:51Speaker 1: slash line with nineteen homers, fifty one runs, fifty rbi.
- 12:55Speaker 1: It was a great investment for what you drafted to
- 12:59Speaker 1: matt What are you doing with this situation with Paradis.
- 13:01Speaker 1: Are you actually believing the long term outlook or do
- 13:05Speaker 1: you think there's a little bit of war games here.
- 13:08Speaker 2: I'm tending to believe the long term outlook here. The Astros.
- 13:15Speaker 2: You know, maybe they've changed their tune, but they've always
- 13:17Speaker 2: been a team, at least the last few years that
- 13:19Speaker 2: have underestimated, at least in the public domain injuries, and
- 13:23Speaker 2: it's always been longer that the player's been out. When
- 13:26Speaker 2: they say pretty significant, I'm like, I don't think we'll
- 13:29Speaker 2: I believe he may have had to have that leg amputated,
- 13:34Speaker 2: but we're not going to see him in any time
- 13:37Speaker 2: soon from a fancy perspective. So I think really the
- 13:41Speaker 2: question comes down to, like you said, they've got to
- 13:44Speaker 2: replace some guys. They're having a good season. They have
- 13:46Speaker 2: a really strong pitching staff, and their lineup is like,
- 13:50Speaker 2: you know, two sides of a coin here with Cam Smiths,
- 13:54Speaker 2: Joseel two Va, Christian Walker on your DZ and then
- 13:57Speaker 2: you've got Victor Karattini, Taylor Trammel, Murcia, Do Bond and
- 14:02Speaker 2: Zach Short And I'm gonna say the jury's out on
- 14:05Speaker 2: Bryce Matthews. At this point, who is hitting bombs and
- 14:08Speaker 2: nothing else. So I do think that they are in play,
- 14:12Speaker 2: not just for you Ando Suarez, but I think they're
- 14:14Speaker 2: employed for pretty much any hitter because they could probably
- 14:17Speaker 2: afford bringing two or three rentals. Like I don't love it,
- 14:21Speaker 2: but I think, like a Luis Robert, this is probably
- 14:25Speaker 2: a reasonable landing spot for him because he's his contracts
- 14:28Speaker 2: up this year. I think they're going to try to
- 14:30Speaker 2: bring in a few guys because that pitching staff has
- 14:34Speaker 2: carried them through the season. If they can just get
- 14:36Speaker 2: one or two of these guys back healthy, it will
- 14:39Speaker 2: be fantastic.
- 14:40Speaker 1: Yeah, And I mean in the interim, they've also got
- 14:43Speaker 1: Shay Whitcumb just kind of like hanging out, which he's
- 14:47Speaker 1: been solid at Triple A. We'll see if he can
- 14:49Speaker 1: get full run. But it'll be fascinating to see what
- 14:52Speaker 1: they do over the next week the Houston Astros as
- 14:54Speaker 1: we get more details on the length of the actual
- 14:59Speaker 1: absence than just pretty significant and what their actual intentions
- 15:04Speaker 1: are there. So let's move on to a reinjured guy
- 15:08Speaker 1: who we talked about two weeks ago. He came back,
- 15:12Speaker 1: played I believe two games, and then went right back
- 15:15Speaker 1: on the IL. I'm talking second baseman for the Tampa
- 15:17Speaker 1: Bay Rays, Brandon Lao, who at first it sounded like
- 15:21Speaker 1: it was like a plant our flat fasciitis like flare up.
- 15:26Speaker 1: Now they're calling it left ankle tendonitis. Both are not
- 15:30Speaker 1: great to hear that, like on top of everything else.
- 15:32Speaker 1: I guess it's not surprising that Lao's body, which is
- 15:36Speaker 1: constantly just blowing out in oblique also has other tendonitis
- 15:40Speaker 1: E issues. But I just wanted to bring this up because,
- 15:44Speaker 1: I mean, I think I found somebody who I'm going
- 15:46Speaker 1: to be featuring in some of my deeper pickups for
- 15:49Speaker 1: this weekend. Carson Williams, shortstop for the Rays. Certainly a
- 15:53Speaker 1: lot of k certainly a lot of swing and miss
- 15:55Speaker 1: in that game. Since July first, he's been at triple
- 15:59Speaker 1: A slashing two seventy nine, four oh four six twenty eight.
- 16:02Speaker 1: That's a one sixty three WRC plus seventeen point three
- 16:06Speaker 1: percent UH walk grate twenty five percent K rate, which
- 16:11Speaker 1: is reasonable. So is it too soon to pull the
- 16:14Speaker 1: trigger on Williams or is this maybe the final level
- 16:17Speaker 1: that we're we were looking for out of him.
- 16:20Speaker 2: I don't think it's it's too soon. I really think
- 16:22Speaker 2: he's a guy that you know, we were just talking
- 16:25Speaker 2: about high school well players, right. He he was up
- 16:28Speaker 2: in you know, getting professional bats at eighteen, so he's
- 16:32Speaker 2: he's been in the minors for five years now really
- 16:36Speaker 2: you know, working through So he's got a you know,
- 16:41Speaker 2: very deep history in the miners and he's shown all
- 16:45Speaker 2: the tools. Uh, and this one is very similar. We
- 16:47Speaker 2: just mentioned Bryce Matthews. This is very similar, very very
- 16:51Speaker 2: tools you player, uh, speed, power, strikeout concerns, but gets
- 16:56Speaker 2: on base at a good rate. Like a little different
- 16:59Speaker 2: but not too far off. And this is the kind
- 17:03Speaker 2: of opportunity that you want to take with a guy
- 17:05Speaker 2: like this is get him called up, give him some run.
- 17:08Speaker 2: If he responds, great, If not, you send him back
- 17:11Speaker 2: down and he develops a little bit further. And the
- 17:13Speaker 2: Rays at this point are still kind of in the
- 17:15Speaker 2: thick of it, trying to figure out who they're going
- 17:17Speaker 2: to be this season, and so they don't have time
- 17:19Speaker 2: to give Stuart Fairchild a fair run. Actually it's been
- 17:23Speaker 2: decent spurts in the past. But yeah, but I think
- 17:28Speaker 2: Carson Williams, it would not be shocking to see him
- 17:30Speaker 2: will come up anytime soon.
- 17:32Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I think that once they if they can
- 17:35Speaker 1: clear a forty man spot for him at the deadline
- 17:38Speaker 1: next week, then I think he takes it because the
- 17:41Speaker 1: other thing I like about Williams, even more so than Matthews,
- 17:44Speaker 1: is the defense is elite for Williams. So that's another
- 17:49Speaker 1: factor that can allow him to stick and figure it
- 17:53Speaker 1: out that they can just you know, throw him in
- 17:54Speaker 1: the nine hole, let him be a speed and defense
- 17:57Speaker 1: guy while he's a rookie and figuring it out at
- 17:59Speaker 1: the big level. So something to keep in mind if
- 18:02Speaker 1: you're looking for a really deep dart throw to get
- 18:05Speaker 1: some homer some stolen bases, not going to be a
- 18:08Speaker 1: batting average asset. I can tell you that very true. Okay,
- 18:12Speaker 1: next injury we have is Grayson Rodriguez from the Baltimore
- 18:15Speaker 1: Orioles is now dealing with elbow soreness. So this started
- 18:19Speaker 1: as like side lat and it's kind of I don't know,
- 18:23Speaker 1: it's just been his entire right side of his body.
- 18:25Speaker 1: As Rodriguez, it looked like he was going to be
- 18:28Speaker 1: coming back pretty soon to start the season, and we
- 18:32Speaker 1: are now sitting in July twenty third waiting for Grayson
- 18:36Speaker 1: Rodriguez to even come close to getting back to a
- 18:39Speaker 1: mound as he's been shut down again. When's the next
- 18:42Speaker 1: time you're going to ever roster Grayson Rodriguez.
- 18:46Speaker 2: It's probably twenty twenty seven, and it's probably as a
- 18:52Speaker 2: late round flyer. I think, is this because I maybe
- 18:57Speaker 2: maybe I'm wrong here, but I feel like Baltimore has
- 19:00Speaker 2: one of the weakest medical staffs or just most conservative
- 19:04Speaker 2: medical staffs in the major leagues. And that's saying something
- 19:09Speaker 2: for a few other teams out there, But like I
- 19:13Speaker 2: feel like we have the exact same thing with the
- 19:19Speaker 2: Kyle Bradish situation last year where he was not feeling
- 19:23Speaker 2: not doing well, he was feeling a little hurt. Let's
- 19:25Speaker 2: give him some rest, Let's give him some time. Then
- 19:28Speaker 2: he kind of things felt better because he rest, all
- 19:30Speaker 2: the inflammation went down, things like that came back, he
- 19:32Speaker 2: threw a few good outings, and then he had Tommy
- 19:34Speaker 2: John surgery. I mean, I don't know there's Tommy John
- 19:37Speaker 2: here for grac because like I said, I feel like
- 19:39Speaker 2: this whole side of his body, but they just keep
- 19:43Speaker 2: using this rest methodology and things aren't getting better. So
- 19:47Speaker 2: I don't know if it's their rehab program. If it's
- 19:49Speaker 2: the way that they rest and they don't rehab properly.
- 19:52Speaker 2: I don't know what it is, but it seems to
- 19:54Speaker 2: be a pattern, and I don't like that. So I'm
- 19:57Speaker 2: writing Rariguez off for twenty twenty six ready because it
- 20:01Speaker 2: feels like there's a surgery of some kind coming. And
- 20:05Speaker 2: again it's entire side of his body that we're gonna see,
- 20:11Speaker 2: or he's gonna go Billy Wagner on us and become
- 20:13Speaker 2: a lefty. I don't know, and the options are slim
- 20:17Speaker 2: for Grace Rodriguez right now. So I'm staying far away,
- 20:20Speaker 2: am I am? I off my rocker?
- 20:22Speaker 1: No, I mean this is not great. This is not
- 20:25Speaker 1: a great kind of pattern of injuries. And this is
- 20:28Speaker 1: also I mean it worked in some sense because it
- 20:31Speaker 1: took Brandon Woodruff forever to get back, But like that's
- 20:34Speaker 1: why like this type of injured player in the preseason.
- 20:38Speaker 1: I don't like using any sort of draft capital on that.
- 20:42Speaker 1: Like just I'm sure that there are moments, or there
- 20:46Speaker 1: were frames within the draft season when Grayson Rodriguez was
- 20:50Speaker 1: like firmly in that number two starter spot even though
- 20:54Speaker 1: he was still battling through some injuries and stuff, and
- 20:56Speaker 1: so that's what I I know you the injured guys,
- 21:00Speaker 1: but like even you wouldn't. I don't think we're investing
- 21:04Speaker 1: in Grace and Rodriguez back then you were if he
- 21:06Speaker 1: was free, like at the end of a draft where
- 21:08Speaker 1: you know it's not costing you anything at the end
- 21:10Speaker 1: of the day that you're figuring out if you want
- 21:12Speaker 1: to like roster him or cow quantroll you know what
- 21:16Speaker 1: I mean, and things like that. But like when you're
- 21:19Speaker 1: actually paying for like a number two starter for these
- 21:21Speaker 1: type of guys, this is why you don't touch them
- 21:24Speaker 1: while they're injured. Eve, even if you invest in wood draft, Like,
- 21:26Speaker 1: look how long it took you yield that investment.
- 21:29Speaker 2: Yeah, these I mean, you called it right, Like I
- 21:32Speaker 2: do play in this game. It's a dangerous game to play.
- 21:35Speaker 2: But like when you're playing in the injured pitcher ace category,
- 21:39Speaker 2: you are, You're you need roster spots and you need time,
- 21:45Speaker 2: and you need the willingness to accept that it's not
- 21:47Speaker 2: going to work out for every single guy. I have
- 21:50Speaker 2: a team, as you know in our new league this
- 21:52Speaker 2: year where I had bieber Wood, Rift, Bradish McClanahan, Strider,
- 21:58Speaker 2: and I'm probably missing somebody else. And here in a
- 22:02Speaker 2: few weeks, I might feel really good when I have
- 22:04Speaker 2: Woodriff and Strider and Bradish and Beaver all all back.
- 22:10Speaker 2: But McClanahan looks like his arms falling off, and so, like,
- 22:14Speaker 2: you have to know, and it has to be a
- 22:16Speaker 2: league format that works. A new leagues. Sixty day i
- 22:19Speaker 2: ls do not count against your roster spots, which is
- 22:22Speaker 2: very significant when you start talking about playing with minor
- 22:26Speaker 2: league spots and things like that. So you can effectively
- 22:29Speaker 2: run a you know, that's those are leagues that have
- 22:31Speaker 2: forty band rosters. But since those sixty day ails don't count,
- 22:34Speaker 2: you can effectually run a forty five forty seven man
- 22:38Speaker 2: roster and not have to worry about that. And if
- 22:41Speaker 2: something goes wrong, you need the dollars you cut those guys,
- 22:44Speaker 2: and so but to that point, that's only with this
- 22:49Speaker 2: type of guy. It's you're you're throwing a dollar at
- 22:51Speaker 2: the end of your auction. That's really the only place
- 22:53Speaker 2: you're gonna play.
- 22:55Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that's all very fair. So let's move
- 22:58Speaker 1: on to our next injury. We're gonna kind of stay
- 23:00Speaker 1: in the mid Atlantic. We're going to go to Philadelphia,
- 23:02Speaker 1: where third baseman Alec Bohm has suffered a fracture rib
- 23:06Speaker 1: and should be out probably about a month minimum is
- 23:10Speaker 1: usually about what it takes. He's on the ten dayil.
- 23:13Speaker 1: But the Phillies are in pretty decent spot from the
- 23:17Speaker 1: playoff positioning. I mean, they are obviously jockeying with the Mets.
- 23:22Speaker 1: But the nice thing here is that the Phillies had
- 23:25Speaker 1: a ready made replacement that's been in the majors, just
- 23:28Speaker 1: has honestly been kind of looking for a spot in
- 23:30Speaker 1: auto camp who you know to date has hit two
- 23:34Speaker 1: fifty five three point thirty three three seventy three over
- 23:38Speaker 1: one hundred and fourteen plate appearances. That's a one oh
- 23:40Speaker 1: one WRC plus. He started the year in Triple A,
- 23:43Speaker 1: where he was tearing it up from both a power
- 23:46Speaker 1: and speed department. Has now picked up probably first base,
- 23:50Speaker 1: third base, outfield eligibility for you out there. He's twenty
- 23:54Speaker 1: five years old. And what I'm really actually kind of
- 23:57Speaker 1: liking here about Kemp is he was an natural third
- 24:00Speaker 1: basement down in Lehigh Valley and then got to the
- 24:03Speaker 1: big leagues and they started shuffling him around, you know,
- 24:06Speaker 1: Albert Poohle style almost but with a much kind of
- 24:10Speaker 1: lower level of talent, so it's takes a lot to
- 24:13Speaker 1: kind of stick. He has been hitting better in July.
- 24:16Speaker 1: It's kind of an empty slash line with a two
- 24:19Speaker 1: seventy three, three fifty one four twenty four, which is
- 24:22Speaker 1: a one nineteen only a homer, but it's been looking
- 24:26Speaker 1: a lot better here for Auto camp interest here in
- 24:29Speaker 1: in deep leagues to pick him up and see if
- 24:31Speaker 1: honestly he might just take the job from Boom. Bom
- 24:34Speaker 1: is nothing especial anymore. He's a one hundred WRC plus player.
- 24:37Speaker 1: He's a minus glove in the infield, like he might
- 24:40Speaker 1: have just lost his job.
- 24:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I I think you know, Auto Kemp is one
- 24:45Speaker 2: of those really sneaky guys that it might end up
- 24:48Speaker 2: providing a lot of value long term. Like he did
- 24:51Speaker 2: not have prospect pedigree, he wasn't drafted, but the guy
- 24:56Speaker 2: like consistently has put up some pretty decent numbers, Like
- 24:59Speaker 2: they have not been great, but he's not struck out
- 25:02Speaker 2: too much. He's got on base a decent amount. He's
- 25:04Speaker 2: an okay average and he just kind of from a
- 25:07Speaker 2: he's like a really interesting volume guy. And then you
- 25:11Speaker 2: know you actually looked at his Baseball Savant page and
- 25:14Speaker 2: don't go look because I'm gonna I'm gonna quiz you
- 25:15Speaker 2: down here. Okay, a little bit, but I was actually
- 25:20Speaker 2: very surprised because there's a guy we're gonna talk about
- 25:22Speaker 2: later that his profile was very, very similar to But
- 25:27Speaker 2: first things first, we're gonna play one of our favorite
- 25:29Speaker 2: games that we always play, what's your sprint speed? And
- 25:32Speaker 2: we need to like name this segment by the way
- 25:36Speaker 2: to play, but what is auto Kemp's sprint speed? And
- 25:41Speaker 2: was a reminder. This is a guy that's stole in
- 25:44Speaker 2: one base and got cast ceiling twice this year, but
- 25:48Speaker 2: in triple A he was eleven for thirteen.
- 25:51Speaker 1: This is a good one because it could go either way.
- 25:53Speaker 1: It could be sneaky like our our patron saint of
- 25:56Speaker 1: this segment, Jake Berger, who rip also hit the eye
- 25:59Speaker 1: all at this week. I didn't cover because he's hits
- 26:02Speaker 1: a lost season enough, but he stole a bunch of
- 26:07Speaker 1: bases in the miners. He is only one for three
- 26:10Speaker 1: in the majors. I've seen him. He's a chonky dude,
- 26:17Speaker 1: a thick dude. He's well built. I'm gonna go fifty.
- 26:22Speaker 2: Ninety third water sentile sprint speed and it gets it
- 26:27Speaker 2: gets better, and again we have a very limited uh
- 26:32Speaker 2: plate appearances here, He's got one hundred fourteen plate appearances,
- 26:34Speaker 2: one hundred two at bats, but quality of contact similar
- 26:38Speaker 2: batters to Auto Kemp, Jason Domingez, Jackson Holiday, Danzby Swanson,
- 26:44Speaker 2: Jaron Durant, and Iliote Ramos. That's not a bad group
- 26:52Speaker 2: with that similar profile but speed, Like, do we just
- 26:56Speaker 2: find Jackson Holiday in the Phillies uniform? I don't know, like,
- 26:59Speaker 2: but all of those things look way better than I
- 27:02Speaker 2: feel about Auto Kemp when I just like, hear the
- 27:04Speaker 2: name and I think that's probably what's happening. So like,
- 27:07Speaker 2: I'm a lot more intrigued the deeper I look at him,
- 27:10Speaker 2: that You're probably right, he could probably steal Alec Baum's
- 27:13Speaker 2: job because Bomb at this point is like the epitome
- 27:18Speaker 2: of league average player. He is replacement level and that
- 27:22Speaker 2: is who he is, and that is the perfect player
- 27:25Speaker 2: for the Colorid Rockies, the White Sox, the like a
- 27:29Speaker 2: number of teams, but not the Phillies, who are trying
- 27:32Speaker 2: to do things. And you know, one game out in
- 27:37Speaker 2: the NL East and in a driver's seat for wild
- 27:41Speaker 2: card that's not when you want replacement level players at
- 27:45Speaker 2: this point.
- 27:46Speaker 1: Yeah, or he just rides the pine and kind of
- 27:49Speaker 1: plays three four times a week boom, that is between third,
- 27:53Speaker 1: first and DH. So yeah, I mean, I'm I'm all
- 27:57Speaker 1: in on Kemp because the other thing that you mentioned
- 27:59Speaker 1: with the savant similarity guys is all pretty decent contact
- 28:04Speaker 1: where if you're at the ninety thirty percentile for sprints
- 28:08Speaker 1: feed you can leg out a lot of stuff between,
- 28:11Speaker 1: like beating a grounder first or making a hustle double.
- 28:15Speaker 1: So very intriguing player. Actually more he's intriguing than I
- 28:18Speaker 1: thought he was gonna be.
- 28:19Speaker 2: He's gonna be streaky, right, That's the thing with all
- 28:21Speaker 2: of those guys. These are guys with slightly higher strikeout,
- 28:24Speaker 2: slightly lower walks, and so they hit the ball hard
- 28:27Speaker 2: then they could contact, but that ultimately ends up being
- 28:29Speaker 2: a really streaky player. And so the question is can't
- 28:32Speaker 2: he get a streak long enough to submit himself that
- 28:34Speaker 2: they can deal with some of that streakiness.
- 28:37Speaker 1: All right, Well, let's move on to our next injury,
- 28:40Speaker 1: and we're gonna go to Milwaukee, where Jake Bowers hit
- 28:44Speaker 1: the ten day il with a left shoulder impingement, And
- 28:48Speaker 1: I mean, we're not quite that sick of a podcast.
- 28:51Speaker 1: We're not here to talk about Jake Bowers. I'm here
- 28:53Speaker 1: to talk about Andrew Vaughn. And Andrew Vaughn is happening
- 28:56Speaker 1: here in Milwaukee, and it really is like it's really
- 29:00Speaker 1: we should have seen this from a million miles away.
- 29:02Speaker 1: In terms of the Milwaukee Brewers turning Andrew Vaughn's career around,
- 29:07Speaker 1: He's now played ten games with the brew Crew two
- 29:11Speaker 1: ninety three, ninety five five forty eight slash line with
- 29:15Speaker 1: two taters twelve RBI in the ten games so far.
- 29:19Speaker 1: Should be the full time first baseman didn't play tonight.
- 29:22Speaker 1: I mean obviously he got too much run and need
- 29:24Speaker 1: a little bit of a break. What's your level of
- 29:26Speaker 1: intrigue here for Andrew Vaughn now that he's got a
- 29:28Speaker 1: full time gig with a team that knows how to
- 29:30Speaker 1: coach him.
- 29:32Speaker 2: I'm I'm befuddled with Andrew Vaughan because if you look
- 29:37Speaker 2: at his underlyes like stat Cast data, it's it's like
- 29:42Speaker 2: he all of a sudden got a played approach like that,
- 29:46Speaker 2: Like that's That's.
- 29:47Speaker 1: What I'm talking about. It Real coaches we'll do that.
- 29:50Speaker 2: Yeah, that's that's that's literally like I was expecting to
- 29:52Speaker 2: see like a really you know, different poll rate or
- 29:57Speaker 2: something different from a ground ball perspective, or you know,
- 30:02Speaker 2: just like the ex of velocity, like most of those
- 30:04Speaker 2: things aren't terribly different. But he just seems to be
- 30:08Speaker 2: swinging at the right pitches and that's really what's kind
- 30:13Speaker 2: of painting out for him. And so I I don't know,
- 30:18Speaker 2: they just made him slightly more aggressive, is maybe what's
- 30:21Speaker 2: going on here. So I'm I can't still can't do it.
- 30:25Speaker 2: I still can't buy him. But like I don't blame
- 30:28Speaker 2: you for taking a gamble. This this is like the
- 30:30Speaker 2: exact opposite we just talked about with Kemp, Like Vaughan
- 30:33Speaker 2: had all the pedigree and all these things coming up,
- 30:36Speaker 2: and he just looked like useless at the plate. And
- 30:40Speaker 2: now with some coaching like he this is this is
- 30:44Speaker 2: what gets me. He goes from a guy that was
- 30:46Speaker 2: walking four percent of the time too, he's now walked,
- 30:48Speaker 2: you know, sixteen percent of the time, striking out twenty
- 30:51Speaker 2: two percent of the time. Now it's ten percent of the time.
- 30:54Speaker 2: Like everything else looks relatively the same. When he actually
- 30:56Speaker 2: makes the contact. But he he's making he's making the
- 31:01Speaker 2: contact with the good pitches, and he's not wasting them.
- 31:03Speaker 2: He's not popping up, he's not doing those other things.
- 31:06Speaker 2: And that's a WRC plus of one sixty one with
- 31:08Speaker 2: the Brewers compared to forty three with the White Socks.
- 31:11Speaker 2: I I'm chalking it up to somewhat luck. But like
- 31:15Speaker 2: the numbers say, something's different here, and I just I
- 31:18Speaker 2: don't know. I don't know if I can do it.
- 31:20Speaker 1: I mean, it is a new marketing efficiency. I think.
- 31:23Speaker 1: Just look at Gavin chets Is hitting clean up for
- 31:25Speaker 1: the San Diego Padres in twenty twenty five. You know,
- 31:28Speaker 1: it's not like dudes don't have that Layton talent. It's
- 31:31Speaker 1: just that the White Sox have some of the worst
- 31:34Speaker 1: hitting coaches I think I've ever seen, because like the
- 31:37Speaker 1: plate approach has never been good across the board. It's
- 31:39Speaker 1: not like Tim Anderson and Luis Roberts like total fault
- 31:43Speaker 1: that they have that play approach. It's that no one's
- 31:46Speaker 1: coached them.
- 31:47Speaker 2: So that makes the questions, like Lewis Rubert gets traded here,
- 31:51Speaker 2: is he a bye now if he goes to a
- 31:54Speaker 2: team that actually, I mean if you gets traded the Rockies. Like,
- 31:57Speaker 2: let's not have that conversation, but like that, first of all,
- 31:59Speaker 2: that would be a whole other tangent on this podcast
- 32:02Speaker 2: about the White Sox and Rockies traded somebody, but like
- 32:05Speaker 2: he gets traded to kind of a playoff contender, you
- 32:08Speaker 2: have to think that all of a sudden some things
- 32:10Speaker 2: might turn around.
- 32:11Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly. And having a legitimate medical staff, well, I
- 32:15Speaker 1: mean maybe not in Houston or Baltimore, but other places. Okay, Well,
- 32:20Speaker 1: let's move on. We're actually gonna stay in Milwaukee for
- 32:23Speaker 1: our next injury. It is salth Frelik going down with
- 32:26Speaker 1: a hamstring injury, which I mean finally has slowed him
- 32:31Speaker 1: down because it had been a great year for him.
- 32:34Speaker 1: Two ninety four, three fifty four, four oh four. That's
- 32:37Speaker 1: a lot of fours in his slash line with seven homers,
- 32:40Speaker 1: which I never thought he would eclipse like three. So
- 32:43Speaker 1: Salfreylick has been a huge, huge asset considering what he
- 32:46Speaker 1: costs at the draft table. But that hamstring injury is
- 32:50Speaker 1: really going to slow him down. I believe he battled
- 32:52Speaker 1: something similar last year. But that's especially the speed defense
- 32:57Speaker 1: contact profile. That's bad when you miss in a hamstring injury.
- 33:02Speaker 1: What I do want to talk about here, though, is
- 33:03Speaker 1: that it should really cement in Isaac Collins for another
- 33:07Speaker 1: good stretch as Blake Perkins has returned from his broken
- 33:11Speaker 1: leg and Isaac Collins has been a godsend for the
- 33:15Speaker 1: Milwaukee Brewers. If you want to see why they've risen
- 33:17Speaker 1: to the top of the NL Central, most of it
- 33:20Speaker 1: is Isaac Collins. To be honest, he's now been hitting
- 33:22Speaker 1: in the five hole for them after just kind of
- 33:25Speaker 1: coming out of nowhere. He was actually drafted by the Rockies.
- 33:28Speaker 1: So there's another good example of marketing efficiency where you'd
- 33:33Speaker 1: take a player from a really bad system, give him
- 33:36Speaker 1: a good coaching staff, a lot can go right. He's
- 33:39Speaker 1: not up to a two sixty four, three sixty seven,
- 33:42Speaker 1: three ninety six slash line. That's a one twenty one
- 33:44Speaker 1: WRC plus six homers eleven stolen bases in eighty one games,
- 33:48Speaker 1: so you can easily double that and see it's like
- 33:50Speaker 1: a twelve and twenty season. This is the type of
- 33:53Speaker 1: guy who you put him in your fourth and fifth
- 33:55Speaker 1: outfield spot, even in a twelve team like that wins
- 33:58Speaker 1: a lot of leagues. So we haven't checked in on
- 34:00Speaker 1: him together. I write about him a decent amount in
- 34:03Speaker 1: my way for Wire Colum, I wanted to get your
- 34:05Speaker 1: thoughts on Isaac Collins, outfielder for the Brewers. Yeah.
- 34:09Speaker 2: I he's a guy that's tough for me because it
- 34:13Speaker 2: doesn't really show up under the hood for Collins. But
- 34:17Speaker 2: he's also kind of agreed, just get things done kind
- 34:19Speaker 2: of guy. So picks the right pitches, walks a heck
- 34:23Speaker 2: of a lot, isn't that fast, but yet somehow steals bases.
- 34:29Speaker 2: Like he's very a fuddling because it feels like he's
- 34:32Speaker 2: just having kind of a hot season, but not that
- 34:36Speaker 2: any of the metrics are you know, substantially off. I mean, yeah,
- 34:40Speaker 2: he's getting a little lucky in the baby perspective, but
- 34:43Speaker 2: the homework perspective, it seems roughly in line with career norms.
- 34:47Speaker 2: But we're talking about a guy that's you know, seventeen
- 34:49Speaker 2: percentile ex and velocity twenty six on hard hit. You know,
- 34:54Speaker 2: he is in the lower half on k rates. He
- 34:59Speaker 2: just tends to get on base, and I think is
- 35:01Speaker 2: a decent base runner, and those things kind of add up.
- 35:05Speaker 2: So he's kind of playing a volume game of just
- 35:07Speaker 2: a kind of an average slide above average guy. So
- 35:10Speaker 2: I'm not investing terribly here in Collins from like a
- 35:13Speaker 2: long term perspective, but it feels like he's found a
- 35:15Speaker 2: spot in this lineup that is gonna pay off and
- 35:18Speaker 2: he's going to keep getting those at that So there's
- 35:20Speaker 2: nothing wrong with running at them. And I think you're right.
- 35:23Speaker 2: It's a waiver wire type of guy. That's the guy
- 35:25Speaker 2: that you can be happy to plug in, but then
- 35:27Speaker 2: at the end of the day, something else better comes
- 35:29Speaker 2: along you can move on. He's probably gonna just he's
- 35:33Speaker 2: he's that utility type value in my mind.
- 35:36Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, I think that's fair. Okay, Well, let's talk
- 35:39Speaker 1: about the White Sox now a little bit. As their
- 35:42Speaker 1: best starter and all star from this year, Shane Smith
- 35:45Speaker 1: landed on the IL with an ankle spring. I mostly
- 35:47Speaker 1: just wanted to bring him up because through June sixth,
- 35:51Speaker 1: over his first sixty eight and a third innings, he
- 35:54Speaker 1: worked to a two thirty seven ERA with a three
- 35:56Speaker 1: forty seven five and eight point four K nine and
- 36:00Speaker 1: looked like a pretty legit pitcher in terms of what
- 36:03Speaker 1: they got out of a rule five pick here. But
- 36:06Speaker 1: because he's been pretty injured when he was in the
- 36:08Speaker 1: Milwaukee system before coming to Chicago. He was already starting
- 36:13Speaker 1: to near a career high in innings, which was just
- 36:16Speaker 1: last year when he put up ninety four and a third.
- 36:19Speaker 1: So the White Sox were gonna massage his innings a
- 36:22Speaker 1: lot down the stretch, and then you could kind of
- 36:23Speaker 1: see over the last month he faded, you know, outings
- 36:27Speaker 1: where he went gave up five under runs, five earned runs,
- 36:30Speaker 1: six earned runs, five and runs two earned runs where
- 36:33Speaker 1: he suffered that ankle injury. So I just wanted to
- 36:36Speaker 1: call it Shane Smith because I like him in like
- 36:38Speaker 1: a keeper situation on the super dirt cheap that like
- 36:41Speaker 1: it's a player where you look at the holistic line
- 36:45Speaker 1: for a season at four to twenty sixty arra, there's
- 36:49Speaker 1: more underneath the hood there because of that stretch of
- 36:52Speaker 1: when he kind of wore down. What do you think
- 36:54Speaker 1: Shane Smith somebody that you might target in keeper situations
- 36:58Speaker 1: for the cheap going into twenty twenty six.
- 37:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm I'm probably loosely targeting Smith. I think he's
- 37:05Speaker 2: a guy that if I could pick up on the cheap,
- 37:06Speaker 2: I'm taking a flyer on. What's what's really interesting was
- 37:10Speaker 2: even though his most recent starts have not gone well,
- 37:15Speaker 2: his velocity has actually increased as the season has gone on.
- 37:19Speaker 2: He started in April in May and like the ninety
- 37:22Speaker 2: four ish range, getting up in ninety five. The last
- 37:25Speaker 2: few starts he's been bringing it actually touching like ninety six.
- 37:30Speaker 2: And so he continued to get stronger as the season
- 37:32Speaker 2: has gone on. And that's actually really really encouraging to
- 37:35Speaker 2: see because this isn't an arm injury that we're talking about.
- 37:39Speaker 2: Maybe I don't know how much it was impacting him,
- 37:43Speaker 2: you know, from a landing perspective, as he was pitching
- 37:45Speaker 2: with that left ankle. To your point, this may be
- 37:50Speaker 2: very just a very gentle ankle spread and they're just
- 37:53Speaker 2: managing the innings. But I think he's at least intriguing.
- 37:58Speaker 2: I'm not a guy I'm gonna target substantially, but I
- 38:02Speaker 2: think there's there's more to be had here with Shane Smith.
- 38:06Speaker 2: And you know what really kind of meets the eyes
- 38:07Speaker 2: and the stats. It's one of those odd ball things.
- 38:10Speaker 2: He's like hiding in playing sight as an All Star,
- 38:14Speaker 2: and I think he can can improve on what he's
- 38:17Speaker 2: done because he's you know, arguably he's been a relatively
- 38:21Speaker 2: unlucky picture this this year as well. So I'm I'm
- 38:24Speaker 2: tempted gonna take some flyers here or there, but I'm
- 38:26Speaker 2: not going to go out of my way to invest
- 38:28Speaker 2: really heavily yet because it is Shane Smith, and if
- 38:30Speaker 2: he's gonna be pitching for the White Sox, I need
- 38:33Speaker 2: I need a little bit more meat on the bone.
- 38:36Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that's all very fair. Okay. Next injury
- 38:39Speaker 1: we have is Dodgers closer Tanner Scott hitting the il
- 38:43Speaker 1: with elbow inflammation. So it initially it looked like it
- 38:47Speaker 1: was going to be something pretty serious. It was a
- 38:49Speaker 1: it was a forearm pop kind of situation like in game,
- 38:53Speaker 1: and now we're being totally inflammation. I also would be
- 38:57Speaker 1: really careful with this situation because it wouldn't be the
- 38:59Speaker 1: first time where we seen someone like Scott go under
- 39:02Speaker 1: an MRI for the inflammation, and especially I don't know
- 39:06Speaker 1: what it is about, like MRI machines and inflammation, but
- 39:09Speaker 1: sometimes you can't see some of the tendons and soft tissue,
- 39:13Speaker 1: and then you come back in a couple of weeks
- 39:15Speaker 1: and like, oh whoops, his UCL is blown out. And
- 39:18Speaker 1: so it has been a rougher season for Scott than
- 39:23Speaker 1: really since like twenty twenty one with Baltimore, So worst
- 39:27Speaker 1: kind of era, worst home run rate that he's had
- 39:30Speaker 1: in quite so, actually worst career home run rate this year,
- 39:33Speaker 1: which is kind of I wonder if it's because he's
- 39:36Speaker 1: in the zone more. It's also like the best walk
- 39:38Speaker 1: rate he's ever had, so it's kind of the Dodgers
- 39:41Speaker 1: might have made a trade off there. So what is
- 39:44Speaker 1: your read here on the Dodgers' closer situation, because it
- 39:47Speaker 1: is a substantial number of saves given it being a
- 39:50Speaker 1: winning team, Who are you targeting going forward? And what
- 39:53Speaker 1: is your level of concern for Scott?
- 39:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I think from a Scott perspective, I'm I'm I'm
- 39:59Speaker 2: definitely concerned because this stuff has not been where we
- 40:02Speaker 2: wanted to be this season. At the same time, new
- 40:06Speaker 2: team making some adjustments, there's been a little bit of
- 40:09Speaker 2: rough luck. I'm I'm not too concerned that he's you know,
- 40:13Speaker 2: substantially injured, but I think that it is gonna be
- 40:17Speaker 2: one of those where we might not see much more
- 40:20Speaker 2: of him and they're gonna try to make sure he's
- 40:22Speaker 2: healthy for for the postseason. From a you know, kind
- 40:26Speaker 2: of next guy up perspective. I I think they're gonna
- 40:30Speaker 2: spread this around quite quite a quite a bit. And
- 40:34Speaker 2: I if I'm going to pick a guy that I'm
- 40:37Speaker 2: gonna you know, hook hook to at this point, it's
- 40:41Speaker 2: probably gonna be Alex Vesia. You know, maybe i'd throw
- 40:47Speaker 2: a little bit uh, you know towards uh Kirby Yates
- 40:51Speaker 2: or uh uh Caprisas. There been caprisas, so like those
- 40:57Speaker 2: be like guys. But I think Vessi has been like
- 40:59Speaker 2: the strongest this season. He seems he's been relied on
- 41:02Speaker 2: more and and uh, you know, more difficult situations. I
- 41:08Speaker 2: don't think any of those are guys that I'm like
- 41:11Speaker 2: thrilled about long long term. They're they're just okay pitchers.
- 41:18Speaker 2: You know, maybe long term Edgardo Hernandez actually picks up
- 41:22Speaker 2: and you know, has the nastiest stuff and becomes the closer.
- 41:25Speaker 2: But I still don't think he quite knows where the
- 41:27Speaker 2: ball's going when he's pitching. You know, it's fair. I
- 41:30Speaker 2: I don't either when I'm pitching, But the whole whole
- 41:34Speaker 2: different ball game, the sixty three I probably bring. So yeah,
- 41:38Speaker 2: I think it's kind of a toss up right now
- 41:41Speaker 2: where you know, with. Once Evan Phillips went down Blake
- 41:45Speaker 2: train trying and went down early in the season, it
- 41:47Speaker 2: was time of Tanner Scott's to deal with, and so
- 41:50Speaker 2: it's gonna get spread around the rest of the season
- 41:52Speaker 2: until Scott comes back. So, uh, plenty of saves. Pick
- 41:56Speaker 2: up one of those guys and get a few cheap ones,
- 41:58Speaker 2: but I don't think it's gonna be a runaway for
- 42:01Speaker 2: any of them.
- 42:02Speaker 1: Okay, well, we've got another saves option available as David Robertson,
- 42:07Speaker 1: the forty year old, signed with the Philadelphia Phillies this week,
- 42:10Speaker 1: and so he is going to go probably not going
- 42:14Speaker 1: to be too long down at Triple A. Honestly, it
- 42:16Speaker 1: might only be a week or two. It sounds like
- 42:18Speaker 1: he's been working out and kind of staying in shape
- 42:21Speaker 1: he came off of last year. I didn't realize this
- 42:24Speaker 1: until I just started looking at the stats. A career
- 42:27Speaker 1: high seventy two innings last year as a thirty nine
- 42:30Speaker 1: year old in Texas, put up a three RA to
- 42:33Speaker 1: go with at twelve point four K nine as he
- 42:36Speaker 1: was just the best reliever really in that bullpen. I
- 42:40Speaker 1: guess Kirby Yates was in there like throwing a sub
- 42:43Speaker 1: to era as well, which was bonkers that they were
- 42:46Speaker 1: in there together kind of reviving their careers. But Robertson
- 42:51Speaker 1: is going to walk into a Philadelphia Phillies team where
- 42:54Speaker 1: the bullpen's been a mess all summer. So this will
- 42:57Speaker 1: really certainly help kind of take back the blow of
- 43:02Speaker 1: that bowm injury as well, because like, if they can
- 43:04Speaker 1: actually show up the back end that bullpen, this team
- 43:07Speaker 1: is gonna look much better. So interest here in Robertson
- 43:11Speaker 1: and actually more interest than any of those Dodgers guys.
- 43:14Speaker 2: Possibly, Yeah, I would say more interest in any of
- 43:17Speaker 2: the Dodgers guys there. Like all the guys that we
- 43:20Speaker 2: were hoping would kind of take take the mantle there
- 43:23Speaker 2: haven't really been you know, great, Like I think Romano
- 43:27Speaker 2: clearly is at a very up and down season. Kirk
- 43:30Speaker 2: Kreen has kind of been the same thing. He looks
- 43:32Speaker 2: dominant times and looks lost at times. I think Matt
- 43:34Speaker 2: Strom's probably been the strongest guy in that bullpen, but
- 43:37Speaker 2: they really like to kind of deploy him kind of
- 43:39Speaker 2: more in that fireman role. So I think they're gonna
- 43:44Speaker 2: work Robertson in slowly, but I would not be surprised
- 43:47Speaker 2: to see him getting a bulk of save opportunities because like,
- 43:50Speaker 2: there has just not been degradation in his performance. Like it,
- 43:53Speaker 2: at some point, it's gonna probably fall off the cliff,
- 43:55Speaker 2: but like the guy has been guy was solid just
- 43:58Speaker 2: last year, and reason he didn't have a solid job
- 44:01Speaker 2: throughout the seasons because they thought he was too old
- 44:04Speaker 2: like and I think I saw a lot of Phillies
- 44:07Speaker 2: fans kind of doubting this this transactions, and then some
- 44:11Speaker 2: rationalis coming through going we traded nothing for a guy
- 44:15Speaker 2: who was just great last year. That's probably the best
- 44:21Speaker 2: movie that we could have made to get somebody here
- 44:24Speaker 2: that's gonna shore up this bullpen. So I think Robertson's
- 44:26Speaker 2: probably your best bet if you're looking for like bulk
- 44:28Speaker 2: saves the rest of the season, if you're just looking
- 44:31Speaker 2: to supplement, you know, I think he's there's a little
- 44:34Speaker 2: more risk here and Robertson than a guy like Bessia,
- 44:38Speaker 2: But I think if you truly need saves, Robertson's the
- 44:42Speaker 2: way to go.
- 44:43Speaker 1: All right, Well, let's move into a couple of new
- 44:46Speaker 1: pictures that we've got in our playerpool. First, we're gonna
- 44:49Speaker 1: go Saint Louis, where Mercifully, we no longer have to
- 44:52Speaker 1: watch Eric Bevetty pitch. He got blown up at the
- 44:55Speaker 1: Colorado Rockies and it was long past due when they
- 45:00Speaker 1: needed to cut bait here on fetti in Saint Louis
- 45:03Speaker 1: to the tune of where like this might end up
- 45:06Speaker 1: costing the Cardinals the playoff spot because they had somebody
- 45:10Speaker 1: better in waiting in the wings the entire time. My
- 45:13Speaker 1: favorite of all time possibly sinkerballer Michael McGreevy, who's also
- 45:17Speaker 1: not just a sinkerballer. This year he has been featuring
- 45:20Speaker 1: a six pitch mix. It's all below average on the
- 45:24Speaker 1: stuff plus scale because he doesn't throw it very hard,
- 45:26Speaker 1: but wow, does he have pinpoint command and it's gonna
- 45:29Speaker 1: work really well in Bush Stadium he had. He picked
- 45:33Speaker 1: up a win in Colorado against the Rockies. He's got
- 45:36Speaker 1: an ERA now three four nine over twenty eight and
- 45:39Speaker 1: a third in the big leagues This year, his career
- 45:42Speaker 1: is two eight one over fifty five and a third.
- 45:45Speaker 1: Not a lot of strikeouts, but lots of ground balls,
- 45:48Speaker 1: lots of precision, lots of just good pitching. So how
- 45:52Speaker 1: shallow is too shallow of the league to own? Michael McGreevy, Yeah.
- 45:56Speaker 2: I think ten teams that definite know, I think twelve
- 46:00Speaker 2: to watch fourteen to fifteen teamers as a buy is
- 46:04Speaker 2: probably where I'm at. Mcgreevy's surface stats don't do him
- 46:08Speaker 2: justice for what he's pitched this year. He's you know,
- 46:11Speaker 2: he's only made into five games, four starts, twenty eight
- 46:13Speaker 2: to third innings, and he struck out like basically a
- 46:16Speaker 2: guy five to four k k nines walk to nobody
- 46:22Speaker 2: hasn't kept the ball on the ground Like it's like, ah,
- 46:23Speaker 2: this doesn't look good. But what he did last year
- 46:25Speaker 2: and then what he's actually done in the miners this year,
- 46:27Speaker 2: he's actually striking out of guys and the miners are
- 46:30Speaker 2: rate that he's never never done before, and so there
- 46:34Speaker 2: is a lot of promising signs. Is just the results
- 46:36Speaker 2: you've actually seen the majors this year, which when he
- 46:40Speaker 2: has just been literally bounced around, and you have to
- 46:42Speaker 2: recognize when you're getting called up and traveling up to
- 46:45Speaker 2: the to the big league club, getting a little rest
- 46:47Speaker 2: and then throw out to throw, you're not bringing your
- 46:50Speaker 2: best stuff getting off the greyhound or whatever it is
- 46:54Speaker 2: that the Cardinals probably only afford these days. So I'm
- 46:58Speaker 2: I think he's, like I said, those twelve teamers, but
- 47:01Speaker 2: he's not the worst guy to pick up and plug
- 47:04Speaker 2: in if you are short on innings, because I don't
- 47:06Speaker 2: think he's gonna be the kind of guy that really
- 47:08Speaker 2: blows up on you, and he might might surprise some
- 47:12Speaker 2: folks here that he's got a little bit better stuff
- 47:14Speaker 2: from a strike up perspective than people realize.
- 47:17Speaker 1: Yeah, and I mean I think the rates are going
- 47:19Speaker 1: to be crazy good too. I think you're looking at
- 47:21Speaker 1: like a four three, eight to four era, I mean, honestly,
- 47:27Speaker 1: and that's just me being rational. I mean, there is
- 47:28Speaker 1: a world where like this turns into a three five,
- 47:30Speaker 1: three six, and the whip, the whip projections, I don't get.
- 47:35Speaker 1: So part of it is like the Cardinals defense is
- 47:38Speaker 1: pretty solid behind him, and with those ground balls with
- 47:41Speaker 1: Mason Winn non Arnato, you would think that they would
- 47:44Speaker 1: be able to convert a lot of them into out.
- 47:47Speaker 1: So I think the whip projections are never gonna quite
- 47:52Speaker 1: pick that up. And so I think he's more of
- 47:55Speaker 1: a whip asset than the projections call for him being
- 47:57Speaker 1: around the one twos. So certainly if you're chicking strikeouts
- 48:01Speaker 1: or you have a K nine category, it's going to
- 48:03Speaker 1: be tough to roster bink greevy. But if you just
- 48:06Speaker 1: need volume chances that wins and rates, I mean, I
- 48:10Speaker 1: love them, and yeah, I might have to find new
- 48:14Speaker 1: co hosts though. That is in Michael McGreevy land with me.
- 48:17Speaker 1: It's going to take a long time, but one day. Okay,
- 48:22Speaker 1: Let's move on to our last news and note piece,
- 48:26Speaker 1: which we have. Troy Meltain, twenty four year old for
- 48:29Speaker 1: the Detroit Tigers, former San Diego State product, made his
- 48:33Speaker 1: major league debut today. He was a pretty big time
- 48:37Speaker 1: prospect coming through their system. Was a fifty future value
- 48:42Speaker 1: on the on fangrafts coming into the season, and so
- 48:46Speaker 1: a little bit more of a deeper cut too, I
- 48:47Speaker 1: would say, compared to the other pitching prospects out there.
- 48:50Speaker 1: Milton was on fire at Triple A before his promotion,
- 48:54Speaker 1: a two seventy two ERA over thirty six and a
- 48:57Speaker 1: third with at thirteen point nine K nine, only a
- 49:00Speaker 1: two point to walk per nine, but a little bit
- 49:04Speaker 1: of an elevated homer rate, has a pretty solid fastball,
- 49:07Speaker 1: works with a slider change up. The debut today against
- 49:11Speaker 1: the Pirates was rough, but it was a major league debut,
- 49:14Speaker 1: and the first inning went a little bit of rye.
- 49:16Speaker 1: He gave up a solo homer to McCutcheon and then
- 49:18Speaker 1: gave up a grand slam in that inning, and but
- 49:20Speaker 1: did get back on the rails to be able to
- 49:23Speaker 1: you know, actually look decent hit ninety nine on the gun.
- 49:27Speaker 1: I really like him, as you can probably tell about
- 49:30Speaker 1: everything that I'm putting together pictures in a great park.
- 49:33Speaker 1: Pitch is for one of the best teams in the league.
- 49:36Speaker 1: Probably more interested in Melton here than McGreevy. But are
- 49:40Speaker 1: you also maybe factoring in that it's an injury replacement
- 49:44Speaker 1: here for swear Gibson Long.
- 49:46Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that I'm much more interested in Melton here,
- 49:50Speaker 2: And honestly, I think he's one of those guys that
- 49:52Speaker 2: it's kind of gotten hid in the system that's had
- 49:55Speaker 2: a lot of upside, you know, with the Jackson jobs
- 49:57Speaker 2: of the world's scooballs. You also have had the Casey
- 50:01Speaker 2: Mayes kind of breakout then starting to fade back this year.
- 50:04Speaker 2: There's been so many names that he's a guy that's
- 50:07Speaker 2: kind of, you know, been hidden, and when you actually
- 50:10Speaker 2: look at what I mean, he's a big guy six
- 50:12Speaker 2: four two ten throwing down hill as aliety there.
- 50:16Speaker 1: But he.
- 50:19Speaker 2: It is amazing if you look at kind of the
- 50:21Speaker 2: control he's had throughout the miners. He's never walked more
- 50:25Speaker 2: than two point seven guys per nine and it's been
- 50:28Speaker 2: almost exactly the same every time. He's done a pretty
- 50:32Speaker 2: decent job of keeping the ball on the ground. But
- 50:34Speaker 2: I wish he could be a little better there because
- 50:36Speaker 2: he has a little homer prone at times. But hey,
- 50:39Speaker 2: when you don't have any get money on base, that's
- 50:40Speaker 2: that's generally okay. So I'm I'm pretty intrigued by Melton
- 50:46Speaker 2: here to see what he can do. Really, it's a
- 50:48Speaker 2: question of what's the secondary is going to do, because
- 50:51Speaker 2: he is gonna throw the fastball, you know, majority of
- 50:54Speaker 2: the time. That's kind of the guy he is. And
- 50:57Speaker 2: the secondary stuff is gonna be strong enough to continue
- 50:59Speaker 2: to to get those strikeouts, which I think I think
- 51:02Speaker 2: it can. So I think he's a better talent than
- 51:07Speaker 2: maybe a few guys even in the rotation right now.
- 51:12Speaker 2: Like I think he's definitely better Montero that's out there. Olsen.
- 51:15Speaker 2: I think you may maybe a neck and neck at
- 51:18Speaker 2: this point. And Sawyers Gibson long like I'll probably take
- 51:24Speaker 2: Melton over him if i'm if I'm looking long term,
- 51:27Speaker 2: so I think he's got a chance to stick here.
- 51:32Speaker 2: And being twenty four, there's it's not like you're looking
- 51:35Speaker 2: for a whole lot of more development out of this guy,
- 51:38Speaker 2: So good pick up here. I'm I'm willing to take
- 51:41Speaker 2: him in twelve teamers at this point and just give
- 51:44Speaker 2: it a shot.
- 51:45Speaker 1: Yeah, And I think if anything, it might keep if
- 51:47Speaker 1: you're in a bidding, fat bidding league, it's going to
- 51:50Speaker 1: keep the price down if folks see that line against
- 51:53Speaker 1: the Pirates today and are scared away. So the underlying
- 51:58Speaker 1: just like Arsenal, everything is so much better, and it's
- 52:02Speaker 1: also a little bit of a scary matchup for a
- 52:04Speaker 1: second outing it's going to be it looks like it's
- 52:07Speaker 1: going to be against the Dbacks early next week, which
- 52:09Speaker 1: is a really good offense, so that might tamp down
- 52:12Speaker 1: the price as well. But I think you nailed it.
- 52:14Speaker 1: I think this is a guy who probably sticks for Detroit,
- 52:17Speaker 1: maybe shifts into the bullpen for the playoffs, but now
- 52:21Speaker 1: is the time to buy in. While maybe the name
- 52:23Speaker 1: recognition isn't there on Troy Milton. Okay, well with that
- 52:26Speaker 1: let's get into. We've just got a few card updates
- 52:29Speaker 1: because as we are speaking here on July twenty third,
- 52:32Speaker 1: it is actually released date for Tops Chrome twenty twenty five.
- 52:37Speaker 1: And if you have been listening to this podcast for
- 52:39Speaker 1: our overviews of all the major card releases that come
- 52:41Speaker 1: out throughout the season, go back to episode ninety nine.
- 52:46Speaker 1: We actually already covered Tops Chrome last week. Give you
- 52:49Speaker 1: the overview of all the details. You can hear Jeremy
- 52:52Speaker 1: run through all of the refractor list. We can get
- 52:55Speaker 1: into all those inserts. So all those details are in
- 52:58Speaker 1: ninety nine. The one thing that we missed though, is
- 53:03Speaker 1: they are during the MVP buyback program again here for
- 53:05Speaker 1: twenty twenty five. So the past two years it's been
- 53:08Speaker 1: a pretty easy runaway to be able to invest in
- 53:12Speaker 1: Aaron Judge and show Heyotani or during the Ronald Lacunya
- 53:15Speaker 1: year the Rond Lacunya cards, so you kind of knew
- 53:18Speaker 1: the runaway MVP. This year, it's a little tighter. In
- 53:21Speaker 1: the AL we have Cal Raley and Aaron Judge. In
- 53:24Speaker 1: the NL, we have both Otani and Pete Crow Armstrong PCA.
- 53:30Speaker 1: The one bugaboo though Tops didn't put cal Rally or
- 53:34Speaker 1: PCA in TOPS twenty twenty five Chrome. So we'll see
- 53:37Speaker 1: how that unravels, because, if anything, I can actually see
- 53:40Speaker 1: in some of the breaker prices, the costs for the
- 53:44Speaker 1: Yankees and Dodger spots are absolutely through the roof because
- 53:49Speaker 1: of this, because either Tops will decide that Chrome update
- 53:54Speaker 1: counts for PCA or cal Rally cards, which I don't
- 53:56Speaker 1: think they will. Honestly, I think they're probably just gonna
- 53:59Speaker 1: roll with this and say like, oh, well they weren't
- 54:01Speaker 1: in it. Sorry, no buyback this year. What are you thinking?
- 54:05Speaker 1: Or if you maybe heard any other news, because it's
- 54:07Speaker 1: kind of recently started the rumblings that started happening as
- 54:10Speaker 1: people have been ripping more and more Tops Chrome today.
- 54:13Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, I haven't heard anything else. But I
- 54:15Speaker 2: think your points very valid because if you actually look
- 54:17Speaker 2: out on Betty Nods right now for MVP, those two
- 54:19Speaker 2: guys are number two in both leagues, and so it's
- 54:23Speaker 2: it's it's Judge and Otani, and then it's Kyle Rally
- 54:27Speaker 2: and PCA, and it's it's not the first of all,
- 54:31Speaker 2: Judge and Otani have pretty good leads, but then like
- 54:35Speaker 2: the actual spread from the second guy to the third
- 54:38Speaker 2: guy is actually larger than from a judge and Otani
- 54:42Speaker 2: to these two. And so I think this is a
- 54:44Speaker 2: huge potential issue for UH TOPS and I'm gonna make
- 54:50Speaker 2: my my bet here. I'm gonna make my bet on
- 54:53Speaker 2: this year is that we are going to see TOPS
- 54:57Speaker 2: Chrome Update include these guys, and they're gonna be trying
- 55:02Speaker 2: to say, well their update cards from TOPS Chrome Update,
- 55:08Speaker 2: which comes out very late in the season, like that's
- 55:11Speaker 2: generally like a November December type product. Chrome Update is
- 55:15Speaker 2: is gonna gonna count towards those and that's gonna cause
- 55:19Speaker 2: a heck of Alakata chaos because you will already know
- 55:21Speaker 2: the MVP when that's available. And so that's that's my
- 55:25Speaker 2: guess what's gonna gonna happen here. But it does really
- 55:29Speaker 2: it shows a really big miss there by by Tops
- 55:32Speaker 2: because pc Rally, I feel like he just got really
- 55:36Speaker 2: hot in the summer, and so I give him a
- 55:38Speaker 2: little credit there, like, but PCA was great out of
- 55:41Speaker 2: the gate, and so you can kind of see that profile.
- 55:46Speaker 2: That's a big miss. They should have seen that one
- 55:48Speaker 2: and at least made the effort there. I don't know
- 55:51Speaker 2: what it takes to put a special run of guys
- 55:54Speaker 2: here in Chrome. Maybe there's gonna be a you know,
- 55:57Speaker 2: whatever product is usually the the hang boxes come out
- 56:00Speaker 2: late or something like that. Maybe all of a sudden,
- 56:02Speaker 2: the hangarboxes are going to have special col Rally and
- 56:04Speaker 2: PCA Chrome cards hidden in them.
- 56:08Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know. It's going to be fascinating to
- 56:10Speaker 1: see how they handle it, because it is also going
- 56:11Speaker 1: to set a precedent because I don't think that this
- 56:14Speaker 1: MVP buyback is going anywhere anytime soon because it's become
- 56:18Speaker 1: so popular. So it'll be fascinating to see what Tops
- 56:22Speaker 1: does with it. And also sorry out there to everybody
- 56:26Speaker 1: that is a Dodgers or Yankees collector, because those might
- 56:29Speaker 1: be some brutal rip spots for some pretty overpriced cards
- 56:35Speaker 1: if you don't get those MVP buybacks, which things have
- 56:39Speaker 1: already been pretty brutal. The mood on Reddit for Tops
- 56:42Speaker 1: Chrome has not been great. I can tell you that
- 56:44Speaker 1: we kind of called this out last week in episode
- 56:46Speaker 1: ninety nine when we noticed that the checklist is let's say,
- 56:50Speaker 1: maybe not exactly sterling. So yeah, and so the auto
- 56:55Speaker 1: checklist especially is really tough. I've been seeing people post
- 56:58Speaker 1: their quote unquote hits and it's been a bit of
- 57:01Speaker 1: a bloodbath. So certainly if you are looking to get
- 57:04Speaker 1: into tops Chrome and start collecting it or buying it,
- 57:08Speaker 1: I like I said, go back to episode ninety nine.
- 57:11Speaker 1: Here are thoughts because everything that's been coming out has
- 57:14Speaker 1: not been terribly encouraging about what type of product it is.
- 57:17Speaker 1: That it is very very expensive for retail, and the
- 57:22Speaker 1: chances of you not i mean even returning like a
- 57:27Speaker 1: ten percent yield on your box are pretty low, So
- 57:31Speaker 1: be careful out there. Anything else you've maybe noticed in
- 57:33Speaker 1: the landscape with twenty twenty five tops Chrome as you've
- 57:36Speaker 1: been seeing some stuff posted and ripped.
- 57:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I think the only other thing is, you know,
- 57:40Speaker 2: we got a little more detail on the actual chase cards.
- 57:45Speaker 2: I'm trying to pull it up here as we talk
- 57:47Speaker 2: as far as the patch, the MVP patches, the gold logomans,
- 57:53Speaker 2: and you know, got actual first pictures of them that
- 57:56Speaker 2: you know. There's a dual patch auto you know Tani,
- 58:02Speaker 2: and then there's a dual patch, so the one of
- 58:05Speaker 2: one Fortani and Judge, and then there's a dual patch
- 58:08Speaker 2: limited to four of of Chris Sale and Threik Skooble.
- 58:12Speaker 2: Then you have an Otani uh patch not an auto
- 58:17Speaker 2: limited to four, and then you have a Schemes patch
- 58:21Speaker 2: auto one of one, and so you have in the
- 58:26Speaker 2: subjects on the the patches and the autos are all
- 58:30Speaker 2: the main five guys. And so it's what's interesting to
- 58:35Speaker 2: me is like I need to feel like I need
- 58:36Speaker 2: to go back to the end of the season, like
- 58:37Speaker 2: how many of these patches do these guys wear, because
- 58:41Speaker 2: that's a decent number that they that they pumped through.
- 58:43Speaker 2: But a little bit more details come out on those
- 58:46Speaker 2: really really big chase cards. So there's a handful out
- 58:48Speaker 2: in there. It's not just all one of one's. You
- 58:50Speaker 2: also have some patches that are not autoed dual and
- 58:55Speaker 2: single limited to four there. But otherwise it is a
- 59:00Speaker 2: very very thin product from a resale perspective. It is
- 59:07Speaker 2: a breaker's delight, is what I would call it.
- 59:10Speaker 1: Yeah, it's gonna get a lot of just action in
- 59:12Speaker 1: terms of YouTube pits and stuff like that. I mean,
- 59:15Speaker 1: they're relatively beautiful cards, so I'm looking forward to seeing
- 59:18Speaker 1: them at shows and stuff. Maybe the other thing that
- 59:20Speaker 1: I wanted to call it is we did learn more
- 59:22Speaker 1: about the Takashi Murakami parallel designs. It is just the
- 59:26Speaker 1: same border over and over, which is kind of disappointing
- 59:29Speaker 1: because you would have hoped that, like TOPS would have
- 59:32Speaker 1: pushed that a little bit in terms of they're also
- 59:34Speaker 1: only of three the parallel it is, so it's a
- 59:38Speaker 1: really really rare card. Gonna go for big bucks if
- 59:41Speaker 1: you find any of those Rakami parallels out there, especially
- 59:46Speaker 1: any of the Japanese players like Otani, which like, yeah,
- 59:49Speaker 1: I can't imagine what the buyback on that is probably
- 59:53Speaker 1: not worth it. But I was hoping that they would
- 59:56Speaker 1: do like a different pattern flower design in every card
- 59:59Speaker 1: or just kind of really mix it up. But they
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: are fun, just kind of not quite what we were
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: hoping for. So otherwise, I think a lot of like
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: what we talked about last week and episode ninety nine
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: is sticking true for Tops Chrome. So one update to
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: the Baseball Release calend. Baseball card release calendar, go into
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: those show notes where we've always got that along with
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: all the notes and news and notes that we've discussed.
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: You'll also be able to find links to the ras
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: Ball post for the cards that we're going to talk about.
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: But you will see on that calendar we added zero
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: point twenty five Panini Prism on the calendar for eight thirteen,
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: coming out right after Tops Finest, So I don't think
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: we'll probably do a preview on Panini Prism. It's not
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: exactly our bread and butter. We probably will for Tops Finest, though,
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: so check that out in the coming weeks. All Right,
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: we're going to take a short break, and then we
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: will be back for Act two talking about players batters,
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: specifically that we expect to crack Jeremy Brewer's Top one
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: hundred and twenty twenty six. So stick around, okay, Welcome back, everybody.
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: I figured it'd be fun to stick to the one
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: hundred theme here on this episode, So what better than
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: to do that with our top one hundred hitter writer here,
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: Jeremy who we You know, you've been doing this for
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: a few years now, and like you're well into halfway
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: through twenty twenty five. I thought it'd be fun to
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: talk about some players who haven't been in your top
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: one hundred so far, just to see if, like we
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: could predict that they will start being regular staples in
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: your top one hundred going into twenty twenty six. So
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: a little bit of a mix of like trying to
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: look for, you know, dynasty keeper players, players that maybe
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: you want to start targeting already in twenty twenty six drafts,
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: which I mean that season's not too far away from us.
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: And honestly, I think we've got a good handful of
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: names that are gonna be pretty imperative down the stretch
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: if you want to make moves in your fantasy leagues
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: and move up roto leagues, because we've got you know,
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: players who are young and reaching a new level or
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: have some veteran status are starting to get a little
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: more comfortable. So with that intro, let's just kick it off.
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: I'm going to pass over you for your first player.
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: We've got a six pack here of players that we
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: expect to be in the top one hundred for next year.
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: Who is your first selection?
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm going with a guy that has a total
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: of seven games at the major league level and he
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: has not played the major since I think it was April,
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: and that's Luke Keishel of the Minnesota Twins. He did
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: just start a rehab assignment and so he's already I
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: think gone three for twelve sole a few bases in
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: the rehab assignment there for Triple A so he will
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: be back in kind of no time. But he's kind
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: of one of those guys that you know, has all
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: the things we're looking for. He was a high draft pick.
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: He does a really good job of kind of controlling
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: the bats, so he doesn't he doesn't quite hit the
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: magical walk more than you strike out metric. Yet now
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: he did uh, well, that was actually even in Triple
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: A this year before he got called out, called up,
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: and he did actually walk more and he struck out
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: in his seven games. So let's call a small sample
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: size there. But throughout his minor leagues, he he's been
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: a kind of thirteen to fifteen percent walk rate, been
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: kind of a fifteen to nineteen percent strikeout rate kind
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: of guy. He's very very good plate discipline that allows
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: him to hit for a decent average. You know, he's
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: got a little babe of luck this year. But last
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: year in the minor leagues he hit three zero three.
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: Uh he had two eighty eight the year before. And
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: he's always had a little pop and it's actually started
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: to show up more in games. And so just like
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: year on hundred two games he was fifteen homers, twenty
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: three steals, and he's looked very comfortable in the major
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: leagues and again the seven games he had, but it
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: was this wasn't the kind of guy that showed up
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: and was trying to feel his way like he looked
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: very very ready for a guy that's only twenty two
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: years old, and so I see him as the future
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: second baseman for the Twins that you know, the brooks
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: Lee I think is trying to trying to hold something
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: down there, but not sure that's actually doing doing a
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: whole lot there. So I think he's going to be
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: back in. This is the kind of guy that might
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: do some damage the rest of this year and actually
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: vaults himself into the top one hundred before the end
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: of the season. Really the big question is how well
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: does that power play in the major leagues, especially in
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: Minnesota where the ball doesn't seem to travel as well
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: out of there. But all of the metrics have just
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: been been great behind the scenes for Keshel here. So
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: what I actually like almost more is that he's just
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: not like the sexy household name. There's there's playing for Minnesota.
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: Nothing against him here, but he was like he wasn't
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: like a first round draft pick. He's a second round
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: draft pick. He doesn't didn't put up crazy numbers of
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: the miners. He just was like really really good the
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: whole way through. So I'm excited about him. I'm going
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: to have him in a heck of a lot of
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: spots next year going in and I think he's going
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: to return some really really good value. So I'm high. Lukishel,
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: do you agree? Am I off my rocker?
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: I mean, you're talking to a guy who titled one
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: of his articles earlier this season keishaw me maybe, and
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: rewrote all of call Me Maybe, well at least the
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: chorus with Keishaw's name, So I'm in, Yeah, I think
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: this was a great call. I think he's a great pickup.
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: It reminds me actually a lot of I mean, the
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: speed isn't quite there, but he grinds out stolen bases
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: and the defense isn't ever going to match this comp
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: But in terms of plate approach, it's pretty close to
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: like a right handed peak row Armstrong, and so you're
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: also looking at the ages. They're about the same size.
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: Similar plate approaches too. In terms of Kishall does chase
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: a lot because he's young enough, twitchy enough to get
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: to a lot of stuff. That's around the plate the
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: way Pete krew Armstrong is. But just like PCA, Kishall
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: hits the snot out of the ball when he makes contact,
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: and so I think you're looking at somebody who's gonna
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: really like push top six second base value. Second base
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: is pretty weak, and so if you're looking at somebody
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: who could I don't think he's gonna like do like
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: fifty to fifty like peak kro armstrongs on pace more.
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: But if you're getting a guy who's like more like
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: fifteen twenty five at second base in Kishall, that's a dangerous,
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: dangerous bat it is, and I think.
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: He's gonna be available pretty late in drafts unless he
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: just goes on a I feel like I talked about
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: Royce Lewis last year at this point in time, and like,
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: this guy is gonna be great next year, great steeling
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: drafts and he hit like sevenventeen Grand Slams something to
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: finish the season. I can't remember what it was and
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: then just ruined all that draft potential. But I think
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: that Keishall just getting back now, he'll get a few
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: months a run, we'll see some maturation, and I think
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: that's exactly what we want to see.
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: All right, Well, my first pick, I am going with
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: another young player who was just drafted last year in
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: twenty twenty four and might make the Cubs look really
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: bad for trading for Kyle Tucker at the end. I'm
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: talking Cam Smith, outfielder there for the Houston Astros, who
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: I also might be cheating a little bit because I
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: do feel like this guy's probably about to crack your
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: top one hundred because since June fifteenth, he has been
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: on an absolute tear, found a really great groove. Considering
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: I mean this at this point in time. Last year,
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: he was being selected at the MLB Draft, barely played
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: any minor league ball, debuted right away with the Astros.
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: He's been hitting two eighty six three forty three, four
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: fifty two. That's a one to twenty four WRC plus
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: as a raw twenty two year old, just learning the
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: right field on the fly. Four homers, sixteen runs, nineteen
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: rbi and one hundred and thirty seven played appearances over
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: you know, just over a month worth of time. It
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: is a little bit of a arbitrary cutoff point, but
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: around that time, like you could just kind of see
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: the confidence building for camp Smith. The plate. He looked
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: really bad in the beginning of the season, scuffled a
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: lot the way that you would expect for somebody without
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: very much minor league seasoning, just walking right into the
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: Houston Astros lineup, learning right field, just the outfield in
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: general on the fly because he's played center. Uh no,
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: maybe he hasn't. I know they talked about it though,
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: because he's got the straight line speed to do so.
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: Five stone bases, seven total homers. I think we're looking
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: at a monster superstar probably going forward here in camp Smith,
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: just because if you can do this at twenty two
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: without the seasoning, just imagine kind of what the next
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: few years look like for him. You especially put him
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: in Houston with the Crawford boxes, get him more and
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: more comfortable. I'm sure he's tired. Is all get out
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: right now too, considering this is so much baseball that
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: he's played, you know, three hundred and fifty play appearances
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: almost at the bag league level, learning how to travel like,
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: just all those little things. So I love cam Smith
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: going forward in twenty twenty six. I think he's also
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: going to be a really hot commodity in drafts though,
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: because I think he's going to be on lots of
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: people's radars. He's going to be a staple of your
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: top one hundred and twenty twenty six.
- 1:09:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I agree with you. I was looking back,
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: like I wrote about Cam Smith not too long ago.
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: It was about a month ago I wrote about Cam
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: Smith as a bye and I think he's again. He's
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: gonna be one of those guys to be a little streakier.
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: And I think we're in that right now where he's
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: actually cooled off last week or two. But I think
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: he's got a heck of a lot of potential. He's
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: gonna do some really good, good things and as long
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: as he can keep those strikeouts within reason, the power
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: is gonna come around. And being the Crawford box is there. Uh,
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: they're they're they're very enticing for for a guy like
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: Cam Smith. So he's he's gonna do some some really
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: really really good uh damage there for the astro. So
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: I agree, I think, Uh, he's still gonna be learning,
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: He's gonna go through that, but next year he's gonna
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: be valuable. I do expect me in a lot of
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: breakout list things like that, So it's gonna be he's
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: gonna be a hard hard to pick up in the offseason.
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: I think he'll have a lot of helium. But great,
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: great pick.
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: Okay, who's your second pick here?
- 1:10:34Speaker 2: Yeah, So I'm going with a guy that actually loved
- 1:10:37Speaker 2: going into this season, and it's just, honestly, it's been
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: kind of a lost year for him, at least that's
- 1:10:42Speaker 2: what it looks, you know, people would say, and I
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: don't think actually has been. And that's Jordan Westburg for
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: the Baltimore Orioles. He has been injured here and there.
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: He's missed time, so he's only managed forty nine games
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: this season. But going into this year he was talked
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: about as a breakout guy after what he did last season.
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: And if you actually look at the numbers, he's played
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: less than half of the games he did last last year,
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: less than half the bats. So we can do the
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: fun math. Last year he had eighteen homers, had fifty
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: seven runs, sixty three RBIs, hit two sixty four. This year,
- 1:11:14Speaker 2: if you just double his stats, he's on pace for
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: more homers, on pace for more runs, on pace for
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: a little less RBIs and that Banniver's about the same
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: like he's when healthy, has been really pretty got starned decent,
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: but his his underlying metrics have taken a little bit
- 1:11:31Speaker 2: of a step back, and that's gonna, you know, be
- 1:11:34Speaker 2: a little bit damaging for him overall. But he's still
- 1:11:39Speaker 2: gonna be a guy that's really really got a lot
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: of potential. It's it's almost like one of those Auto
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: Kemp type type of profiles where he's really doesn't have
- 1:11:51Speaker 2: the best played approach, but he absolutely, you know, hits
- 1:11:54Speaker 2: the snout of the ball when he's making contact. I
- 1:11:57Speaker 2: do think that the injuries this year have really kind
- 1:11:59Speaker 2: of brought him down from the that next step of
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: growth that I've expected. But I still think being so young,
- 1:12:07Speaker 2: you know, he's just twenty six years old, getting consistent
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: playing time, he's gonna really come into his own there
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: in Baltimore, and I think that he's got a heck
- 1:12:18Speaker 2: of a lot left in the in the tank. Some
- 1:12:22Speaker 2: of his his comps here on Basil Savants, Manny Machado, Ti,
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: Oscar Hernandez, he's he's he hits the ball pretty gosh
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: durned well, and there's gonna be a good discount on
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: him next year. So sign me up for Jordan Westburg.
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: I've been trying to trade for him on a few leagues,
- 1:12:38Speaker 2: and people just won't give me a discount I want.
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: Yeah, I can see why, because I mean, if we
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: go back to my arbitrary June fifteenth cut off, Actually
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: I hadn't noticed this had flown underneath my radar a
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: little bit. Two eighty nine three twenty five, four forty
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: seven slash line in eighty played appearances with three homers.
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: I think you also were splitting hairs a little bit.
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: I think the batot ball match are right there, like
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: the maybe the hard hit rate isn't quite where it
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: was last year, but you're talking two percent, the bail
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: rates up a little bit, a little bit, maybe too
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: much pop up. But once I think we see where
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: the dust subtles, I think you're gonna look right up
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: at that line and be like, oh crap, Like he
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: just put to gather one twenty five WRC plus seasons
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: back to back.
- 1:13:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that's what's gonna happen, because I think
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: the injuries, just like people wrote him off like he
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: just seemed to be scuffling, and then like he's gonna
- 1:13:31Speaker 2: he's gonna figure things out, and as long as he
- 1:13:34Speaker 2: stays healthy, the rest of the season. It's come man,
- 1:13:36Speaker 2: the numbers. You're gonna look up and be very surprised
- 1:13:39Speaker 2: with where he finishes up. So this is a guy
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: that might sneak into the top one hundred the rest
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: of the rest of the season. We'll see. I need
- 1:13:46Speaker 2: to see a little more health. But he's he's doing
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: some damage.
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: Yep. I think that's a great call. So my next player, Uh,
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: maybe I am cheating a little bit again in terms
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: of finding another dude who might be cracking in there soon.
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: Is because he's just been relatively hot again, and I'm
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: gonna look into his game log and also picks since
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: June fifteenth, because it's looked much better for Jayson Dominguez
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: in New York two eighty nine, three thirty seven, four
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: twenty two. That's a one thirteen WRC plus with two
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: homers and five stone bases. Just been really consistent though
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: too in that time for the Yankees, where it's like
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: not huge slump, says I mean, I guess I also
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: say that as he's kind of rattled off four straight
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: hitless games, so maybe he is going into one. But
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: I think lots of people also lost track of Jayson
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: Diminguez only twenty two years old, and this is a
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: guy who again you look at the similar batters on Savant,
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: you're looking at the affirmation Auto kempis right there, Colton Cawser,
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: Lawrence Butler, Carlos Nirvaaz who's had a breakout year. So
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: maybe not quite the same tier as Jordan Westberg, but
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: he is a couple of years younger. It's another kind
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: of situation like Cam Smith, where Jayson Diminguez as a
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: twenty two year old is hanging in the big leagues
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: and getting that everyday run, getting used to the schedule.
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: This is exactly what I like to see in terms
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: of a player just being able to make that transition
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: from the minor leagues to the big leagues with the
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: big spotlight on him, and he's doing it really, really well.
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: Then he's doing it with grace to the point where
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: I don't think he's getting too much AL Rookie of
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: the Year chatter. But if he keeps chugging along and
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: keeps pushing that WRC plus closer and closer to the
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: one to fifteen mark as the season car carries to
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: its end, you're gonna be looking at some stats that
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: are pretty solid. You're gonna be looking probably low twenty
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: stone bases, almost fifteen homers, So that's just another good
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: layer to build upon. I do think the hype's gonna
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: be through the roof for him next year if he
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: does put together a solid season. But I'm also saying that, hey,
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: this is probably your last chance in dynasty keeper leagues
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: to maybe even get in at a reasonable price, because
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: I think it's gonna go through the roof from here
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: the way his Bowman chrome cards have.
- 1:16:06Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think you're absolutely right. Another guy that
- 1:16:10Speaker 2: you just look at the end of the season things
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: are a steak Cup like, Man, he's a lot better
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: than I. Then I realized, and I think you're right.
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: He's gonna probably be a nip of the heels of
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: the top one hundred. I wouldn't be surprised the next
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: iteration to see him make make his way in there.
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: The thing that's with the Mingas is again very he
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: is an immature hitter, but he's extremely talented, and so
- 1:16:31Speaker 2: what that tells me is that all he has to
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: do is get rid of some ophers. Like the last
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: four games he has not a single hit. But then
- 1:16:39Speaker 2: you look back a week before, and he had like
- 1:16:42Speaker 2: four hit game, three, hit game two, hit game for
- 1:16:45Speaker 2: like he was just unbelievable. Like he's just still maturing
- 1:16:49Speaker 2: as a hitter and has to figure some things out,
- 1:16:52Speaker 2: uh to get a little bit more consistency. But if
- 1:16:54Speaker 2: that consistency comes, man, those numbers are gonna jump off
- 1:16:56Speaker 2: the page. And he is gop. He's still got a
- 1:17:01Speaker 2: decent bit of uh, mature maturation that you can see
- 1:17:06Speaker 2: and growth within that swing. So I think you're the
- 1:17:09Speaker 2: thing is a great call. Maybe it's just a bad
- 1:17:11Speaker 2: call that I haven't gotten into the top one hundred yet.
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: Maybe that's really what this is reflecting.
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I mean possibly, but maybe we're also writing
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: your future updates for you.
- 1:17:20Speaker 2: So it's been a few weeks. I did miss a
- 1:17:23Speaker 2: few weeks of articles or hitter rankings around the All
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: Star break for some travel here. So I'm taking the
- 1:17:30Speaker 2: pass and there. Now I'm just gonna put him in
- 1:17:33Speaker 2: just to prove a point.
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: Now, So okay, well who is your next player?
- 1:17:38Speaker 2: Yeah, so I'm going a little bit deeper with the
- 1:17:40Speaker 2: cut here and probably a little bit more risk on
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: this one. But a guy I've really liked for for
- 1:17:46Speaker 2: years and that's HASI on Kim for the Tampa Bay Rays.
- 1:17:51Speaker 2: He has been hurt Lendon on kind of one of
- 1:17:55Speaker 2: those short term deals to try to get something out
- 1:17:58Speaker 2: of the get rehab with. But you know, he had
- 1:18:02Speaker 2: multiple really strong years with the Padres. Never a huge
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: batting average asset, but scoring quite a few runs, hit
- 1:18:10Speaker 2: you know, mid teens power, had the ability to steal
- 1:18:14Speaker 2: thirty bases, and so I think that's this is a
- 1:18:17Speaker 2: guy that is you know, kind of falling off radars
- 1:18:21Speaker 2: at this point in time. He's now back. He's got
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: ten games, hitting paltry two twenty six with a single homer,
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: but still in four bases. And I think he's one
- 1:18:31Speaker 2: of those guys that he just gets on base, he runs,
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: He's got just enough pop that he's gonna live in
- 1:18:39Speaker 2: the back quarter of the top one hundred type of thing.
- 1:18:43Speaker 2: And you're gonna look at the end of the season, go, man,
- 1:18:45Speaker 2: where do those numbers come from? Because he's just gonna
- 1:18:47Speaker 2: plod along and just pitching a homer every few weeks,
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: steal two bases here and there, and it's just gonna
- 1:18:53Speaker 2: gonna add up. And he's also, you know, relatively a
- 1:18:57Speaker 2: decent fielder. He's got the potential to play multiple positions
- 1:19:01Speaker 2: there between second, third, and short and so he's probably
- 1:19:05Speaker 2: gonna go into next year with second and shortstop eligibility.
- 1:19:08Speaker 2: Depending on what we see there with Brandon Lao missing time,
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: he's probably gonna get the enough starts second to pick
- 1:19:16Speaker 2: that up. So I'm interested in him. I think this
- 1:19:20Speaker 2: is gonna be considered a lost year and he's gonna
- 1:19:22Speaker 2: take some time getting back up to speed. But this
- 1:19:25Speaker 2: guy is still just twenty nine years old and he's
- 1:19:29Speaker 2: I think he's still got some of his better baseball
- 1:19:30Speaker 2: ahead of him. So hust Young Kim gonna sneak in
- 1:19:33Speaker 2: the top one hundred next year. I'm pretty sure of it.
- 1:19:36Speaker 2: And the price is free right now. In a lot
- 1:19:39Speaker 2: of spots, especially if you're gonna keep your dynasty leagues,
- 1:19:42Speaker 2: you gotta be looking to pick this guy up.
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I think this is one where it
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: is a little bit more of a twenty twenty six
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: play because of like I think you can tell he's
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: still working back from that shoulder, but especially you're almost
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: kind of hoping that he's not that great down the
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: stretch with the race because he has a player option
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: for twenty twenty six, and you're hoping that he exercises
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: that and doesn't go into the open market. Because this
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: is something we have I am trying to like wrestle with,
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: especially given that the Rays recently have changed ownership groups.
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: Is how long are the Rays going to be outside?
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: And that in George Steinbrennerfield, because it's such a huge
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: boost to their value if you know you can get
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: eighty one games of Hasti on Kim outdoors in Tampa
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: in that minor league park. So I think this is
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: a great call.
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: All right, let's finish up the the six pack here.
- 1:20:35Speaker 2: Who do you got find their way in the top
- 1:20:37Speaker 2: ten or top ten, top one hundred next year? Maybe
- 1:20:41Speaker 2: maybe went Bolden put them in the top ten.
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: I mean maybe not top ten, but I mean I
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: think we're gonna be talking like number two catcher drafted
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: behind Cal Rawley possibly going into draft season. Wins all
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: said and done, because this dude, I think is going
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: to win the Rookie of the Year and it's in
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: the NL. It's Drake Baldwin who's now hitting lean up
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: for the Atlanta Braves. He's kind of over the past
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: week or so just kind of totally taken the DH
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: spot away from Marcel Zuno, where the Braves are actually
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: playing Murphy and Baldwin behind the plate and then the
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: other one plays DH. Because they have they called up
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: Sandy Leone to make this all possible to have the
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: third catcher. And I mean, I know we've been talking
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: about all these dudes hitting the snot out of the ball.
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: This guy hits the snot out of the ball like
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: it is. An eighty plus percent contact rate with a
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: fifty plus percent heart hit rate and you look at
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: just the nukes on his spray chart. In terms of
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: where these homers are landing, they are tanks. Dude, Drake
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: Baldwin is a legit hitter. He's got a great eye
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: in terms of the strikeout rate, sixteen point three percent,
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: nine percent walk rate as a twenty four year old
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: out of Missouri State in the Missouri Valley, this guy
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: has come out nowhere and it's not like this is
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: the first time he's done it. He was doing fifty
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: percent hard rates, eighty percent contact rates down in the
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: minors and just started doing the majors. This is a
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: guy who I think is a foundational catcher for Dynasty
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: at this point, because I mean, you also, the bad
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: is so sublime. It's a one thirty five WRC plus
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: right now, two eighty six, three fifty six, forty one slash.
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: I have a feeling he probably is going to be
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: going into your top one hundred when you kind of
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: put together all your boop boop beep oops in the
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: background with your calculations, because I can't find a flaw
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: like that's It's like one of those things where I
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: keep looking. I'm just like, where is the bad part
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: of Drake Baldwin. There isn't one. I just don't see
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: how he's not like a top five, top three catcher
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: next year.
- 1:22:49Speaker 2: Yeah, the flaw was the playing time. That was the flaw.
- 1:22:53Speaker 2: And now that basically Azuna is not really worth playing
- 1:22:56Speaker 2: much there in Atlanta, and they're figuring out a way
- 1:22:59Speaker 2: to get both Murphy and Baldwin in because you have
- 1:23:01Speaker 2: to remember, Sean Murphy is a really, really good catcher.
- 1:23:05Speaker 2: He's an all star catcher. Yeah, he had a down
- 1:23:08Speaker 2: year last year, but before that he was he was great,
- 1:23:10Speaker 2: and he's actually been pretty cush turning good this year
- 1:23:13Speaker 2: as well, as long as he gets the plane time
- 1:23:15Speaker 2: and the Braves can't afford to let Murphy's contract just rot.
- 1:23:20Speaker 2: They need to, like they're gonna have to move him
- 1:23:22Speaker 2: in the offseason, like Sean Murphy's getting traded, Like maybe
- 1:23:25Speaker 2: he gets traded the deadline here, I don't know, unless
- 1:23:29Speaker 2: they want to roll with a strategy have two catchers
- 1:23:32Speaker 2: and keep him fresh and keep him two great bats
- 1:23:34Speaker 2: in the lineup, which is possible.
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: I think that's actually the way they can probably go,
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: because then you look at like this is a perfect
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: situation to sign somebody like Austin Hedges to be your
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: third catcher who is just like all Glove pretty much
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: a coach. And then Murphy's not a slouch himself at
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: the at the plate, and you're looking Drake Baldwin. I mean,
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: this is good enough that he could be just like
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: Kyle Schwarber honestly at this point. And so like, I
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: think that might be what the Atlanta does going in
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: next year, that they do catcher d h here and
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: then they just find a really Glove first catcher. Why
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: wouldn't you.
- 1:24:09Speaker 2: It's been working, Yeah, absolutely so. Baldwin's been awesome, doing
- 1:24:14Speaker 2: even better. The fact that he's getting the playing time
- 1:24:17Speaker 2: is absolutely the big thing because if it's it's funny
- 1:24:19Speaker 2: if you go back in this game log, you just
- 1:24:23Speaker 2: look for the number one on played appearances, and that's
- 1:24:27Speaker 2: you'll you'll see all the way and through uh end
- 1:24:30Speaker 2: of June and even a little bit in July. You
- 1:24:33Speaker 2: can see it's like every other game it was like
- 1:24:36Speaker 2: one played appearance, one played appearance, one played appearance, because
- 1:24:39Speaker 2: he was in that time share and you could tell
- 1:24:41Speaker 2: that was that was hurting him. And now that they're
- 1:24:44Speaker 2: giving him that full rain, like man, the guy's just blistering,
- 1:24:48Speaker 2: blistering the ball. And he's a pretty strong good catcher too,
- 1:24:52Speaker 2: and so that that's yeah, uh, that's that's valuable. So
- 1:24:58Speaker 2: I I think this is a great call here, Uh
- 1:25:01Speaker 2: Baldwin getting full playing time is is is the is
- 1:25:04Speaker 2: the ideal situation. I actually have a team here that
- 1:25:07Speaker 2: I've struggled with lead because I have three good cheap
- 1:25:11Speaker 2: catchers and Tyler students and Augustin Ramirez, Andrake Baldwin, and
- 1:25:14Speaker 2: I have no idea what to do because I'm running
- 1:25:17Speaker 2: away with too many games played with with with those guys.
- 1:25:21Speaker 2: But it's the catcher position has just has just been
- 1:25:25Speaker 2: so different this year with so many guys coming out
- 1:25:27Speaker 2: of the woodwork to provide value in some of the
- 1:25:29Speaker 2: big names outside of Cayl Rally kind of coming back
- 1:25:32Speaker 2: to the field. So it'll be really interesting next year.
- 1:25:35Speaker 2: But yeah, top five catcher next year, no, no question,
- 1:25:37Speaker 2: and maybe be better than that.
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: Yeah, And I mean, I can tell you what you're
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: gonna do. You're gonna end up playing Drake Baldwin in
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: your util spot because it's worth it.
- 1:25:47Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's it's tough. Vinnie Peso has been pretty
- 1:25:51Speaker 2: gouch turned good in that utility spot as well, so
- 1:25:54Speaker 2: it's it's It's been a fun, fun year for some
- 1:25:57Speaker 2: of these guys breaking out, that's for sure.
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: So absolutely. Okay, Well that wraps up our six pack
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: of players. We expect to crack the top one hundred
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: in twenty twenty six. We're gonna take another short break
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: because we've got the third act coming. Baby, it's still
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: episode one hundred. We're gonna be back talking baseball cards
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: on the other end of the break, So stick around,
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: all right, Welcome back, everybody. We are going back to
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: the roots. This is the third act. We're talking cards.
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: I guess if we had gone by the true roots
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: of the podcast. We would have done cards first, categories last,
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: but I wanted to save maybe the more fun segment
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: here for for the cherry on top for top for
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: the episode one hundred Here. What we're gonna do is
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: we each have two cards to kind of commemorate our
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: two years together doing the one hundred episodes of the
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: podcast to put into our podcast PC again. Go check
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: those show notes. Go to rasball dot com for this
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: post to see actual pictures of these cards, while have
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: it embedded in the post as well as you can
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: click in there and see what the podcast PC list
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: is up to. Because we've got four more to add
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: in here. I just gave us a prompting of let's
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: talk one hundred cards, so I left it very open
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: in terms of interpreting. One thing that I think we
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: both did is TOPS has always had a tradition going
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: back to really I think they start They didn't do
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: it like kind of off the bat, but they started
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: picking up steam with it in the late fifties when
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: they first started making cards. Is that the round numbers
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: would have stars on them, So you're fifty, you're one hundred,
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: you're one to fifty or two hundred would be a
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: big time star, and so they've cupped that up going
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: forward a lot or using the round numbers to be
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: able to commemorate a special occasion or put in some
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: sort of other special card on top of Like it
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: just kind of fits with baseball. Baseball's all about numbers.
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: Numbers kind of stick in everybody's minds in terms of
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: you know, seventy four homers, seven hundred and fifteen homers
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: for you know, Babe Ruth that Hank Aaron had to pass.
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: You look at everybody that like all the Aaron Judge
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: cards that have come out recently fall than ninety nine.
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: They do lots of fun stuff with numbers. So we
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: figured one hundred would be fun to talk about. We're
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: going to go through four cards here. So with all that,
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: like I said, I've left this pretty open for us
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: to interpret as our favorite one hundred cards to put
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: into the PC for this podcast. What route did you
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: go here to be able to find a card that
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: goes with the theme of one hundred? Yeah, I would
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: what I thought was the obvious route, and I was
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: looking for cards number one hundred. I did debate the
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: out of one hundred serial numbers or things like that,
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: and I thought I could be cheating to literally pick
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: like anything was serial number just had a hundred on it.
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: But I wanted to find like the card that has
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: some meaning, that some sentimental value that have the number
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: one hundred on it. And I will tell you if
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: you're bored, go go try to Google finding like a
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: list of cards with the number one hundred on it,
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: like like some weird cross reference checklist.
- 1:32:09Speaker 2: It doesn't exist. It was it was not easing. Yes,
- 1:32:14Speaker 2: we're starting to list. And I also tell you a
- 1:32:15Speaker 2: searching like eBay for like number one hundred pound signs
- 1:32:19Speaker 2: are ignored in eBay searches, so it doesn't work nearly
- 1:32:23Speaker 2: as well as you would think. But found some fun stuff.
- 1:32:26Speaker 2: So I'm going to add something to the PC here
- 1:32:28Speaker 2: that I'm surprised I don't have this in the PC,
- 1:32:31Speaker 2: but I'm gonna go with the twenty eleven Tops Platinum
- 1:32:35Speaker 2: Anniversary number one hundred Albert Poolhos card and this is
- 1:32:40Speaker 2: the last year of his first run with the Cardinals
- 1:32:44Speaker 2: that he was in a Cardinals uniform in flagship. If
- 1:32:48Speaker 2: you go try to fact check me, you will find
- 1:32:50Speaker 2: in twenty twelve he is in a Cardinal's uniform in
- 1:32:53Speaker 2: Flagship on a World Series insert, but he's moved into
- 1:32:58Speaker 2: the Angels uniforms in there. Also, Platinum Anniversary is like
- 1:33:02Speaker 2: one of the best sets, like of the last probably
- 1:33:05Speaker 2: fifteen twenty years in my opinion. Those cards are absolutely beautiful.
- 1:33:10Speaker 2: The inserts on like the base, they're basically, you know,
- 1:33:14Speaker 2: a silver ice type of card before those became a
- 1:33:19Speaker 2: thing in the last few years, and so absolutely a
- 1:33:22Speaker 2: beautiful card. You know, it's picture in the card is
- 1:33:26Speaker 2: him clearly at Bush Stadium finishing off the swing watching
- 1:33:31Speaker 2: a homer. I wish I could position what game it
- 1:33:34Speaker 2: was in, but it is the classic classic swing from
- 1:33:38Speaker 2: Poohles here. And the thing I like about this it's
- 1:33:41Speaker 2: an affordable card to add your PC. We're talking about
- 1:33:45Speaker 2: a card you can get probably for the ten fifteen
- 1:33:47Speaker 2: dollars range PSA ten is actually only maybe one hundred
- 1:33:53Speaker 2: dollars something in that range. It'll vary because these are
- 1:33:56Speaker 2: not terribly easy to cards to find, and they're not
- 1:34:00Speaker 2: around that that often in high grades, and so it
- 1:34:04Speaker 2: is a fun one to if you find a good,
- 1:34:07Speaker 2: good one, to try to get that submitted for grading.
- 1:34:10Speaker 2: Because the Platinumniversary actually does decently with grading outside they've
- 1:34:15Speaker 2: historically had some centering issues, so I did stick to
- 1:34:18Speaker 2: cards numbered one hundred on the back. But I had
- 1:34:21Speaker 2: to play some sentimental value here with my true PC
- 1:34:25Speaker 2: matching over with our podcast PC, something that could actually
- 1:34:29Speaker 2: afford to add to the PC. So two those eleven
- 1:34:32Speaker 2: top Platinum Diamond Anniversary Albert.
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: Poohles, Yeah, I think this is a fantastic pick. This
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: is also people will know they're designing the card because
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: it's the Mike Trout rookie card design. And so especially
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: those like Platinum Diamond parallels are very very expensive because
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: they are beautiful cards in person. They're not terribly uncommon.
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: I think they were probably akin to like rainbow foil,
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: so like where you know, they're unnumbered parallels, and so
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: I would suggest picking up as many as you can
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: because they make great additions. I think I own the
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: entire I do. Yeah, I owned the entire Cardinals run
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: from the twenty eleven Platinum Diamond Anniversary, partly because it
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: was a world series year and because they're gorgeous. They're
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: so it's they've nailed the design from the top side
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: in terms of the foil and then the stamp that
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: goes on it.
- 1:35:26Speaker 2: You can't go wrong. Yeah, I can't go wrong. I've
- 1:35:29Speaker 2: actually debated collecting this entire set. The only there's one
- 1:35:31Speaker 2: thing that's helped me back and I can you can
- 1:35:34Speaker 2: guess what that would be. His name is Mike Trout. Yeah,
- 1:35:37Speaker 2: well you can do anything about that one. Yeah, this
- 1:35:40Speaker 2: will go and maybe at some point in time one
- 1:35:42Speaker 2: will fall into my lap exactly.
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: Okay, Well, for my one hundred card, my first one,
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: I actually also stuck with a hard numbered one hundred.
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: I'm looking at twenty twenty two tops update US one
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: hundred Bobby Witt Junior Rookie card the Royal Blue Parallel.
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: So there's a couple of facets here in terms of
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: the layers. One we actually have the short print of
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: this card already in our PC. It's the classic Bobby
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: Wit having a mullet shot where it's just like an
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: iconic Bobby Wit card. But I think his bass rookie
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: card is also gonna turn out to be relatively iconic
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: just because it's a great shot of him finishing a
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: swing and watching a fly ball. We don't know if
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: it's a homer or not, but he is just dirty
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: as all get out in the light powder blue Royals uniform,
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: very emblematic of Bobby wit Junior. But I also wanted
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: to put it in because I think this is gonna
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: go down possibly as like this kind of generation's cards
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: of like maybe the Mic next Mike Trout, where like
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: we could see I think a pretty decent bump going
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: forward in some of the bass just cards because compared
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: to other sets that have been out there from Flagship
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: and Update and Chrome and everything else, the print run
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: was pretty low on twenty two tops Update, which is
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: surprising because both Bobby Wit Junior and Julio Rodriguez had
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: their rookie cards in that set, and so you're looking
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: at a base print run of like three hundred and
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: fifty k as well as like there were so many
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: people ripping that stuff to get to the good cards
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: of Bobby Wit Junior and Julio Rodriguez that like those
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: base cards, it's hard to find well centered up ones.
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: They're in good condition, they've just kind of like gotten
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: shuffled and lots of dollar boxes and stuff where I
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: don't think you're going to be looking at like Mike
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: Trout prices because the print run on those were so
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: much lower. But you're looking at something that can turn
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: into a steady five to ten dollars card for a
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: flagship rookie card. That's not going to happen for anybody else.
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: So another reason I'm going with the blue, the blue
- 1:37:51Speaker 1: coloration on these parallels. It's really hard to find one
- 1:37:54Speaker 1: that's truly blue. Some of them look like black because
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: like the ink just was off in that set. So
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: the one that I found is a true blue goes
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: with it. If you're also looking for a fun variation
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: of this to put together. The chrome sapphire version of
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: it is also number one hundred, so just lots of
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: kind of things coming together. It's a beautiful card. Color match.
- 1:38:15Speaker 1: Can't beat that for the PC. That's when I'm putting
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: in the Bobby Witt Junior Rookie card number one hundred
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: from the Update series Blue Parallel though.
- 1:38:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I actually love this because the blue parallels were
- 1:38:27Speaker 2: not that uncommon. They were actually RELs available or not
- 1:38:30Speaker 2: numbered or anything like that. But I did not realize
- 1:38:33Speaker 2: how much this has grown in value because the color
- 1:38:37Speaker 2: match and Bobby be witting what he's done. Yeah, I know,
- 1:38:40Speaker 2: the one that you put in the show notes is
- 1:38:42Speaker 2: like one twenty five. They've sold somewhere between fifty one
- 1:38:44Speaker 2: hundred and your point. The coloring on these things is
- 1:38:48Speaker 2: all over the place. They're like, you know, if you
- 1:38:52Speaker 2: want a jersey match color, like there's one out there
- 1:38:54Speaker 2: because you know with the ink and little lights, and
- 1:38:58Speaker 2: then next one over was you know, dark blue, and
- 1:39:01Speaker 2: so they you know, finding something like this that actually
- 1:39:05Speaker 2: would grade well, I you know, the only grade ones
- 1:39:08Speaker 2: I'm seeing are coming in like eights and things like that. Yeah,
- 1:39:11Speaker 2: and I think that's the target, is that it's you know,
- 1:39:13Speaker 2: and especially with that royal blue, it chips so so badly.
- 1:39:19Speaker 2: It was just really really hard to find. So I
- 1:39:21Speaker 2: actually stay corrected. I did find a PSA ten royal
- 1:39:26Speaker 2: blue that sold into the cell in May. So take
- 1:39:31Speaker 2: a guess how much the PSA ten of this, and
- 1:39:33Speaker 2: this is an unnumbered royal blue sold for with Bobby Witt.
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: It's probably because what color. Giving the color of the border,
- 1:39:42Speaker 1: is it more of the dark blue or a royal blue?
- 1:39:46Speaker 2: I'm gonna say it's a little more of a dark blue.
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: Okay, then maybe like three point fifty.
- 1:39:52Speaker 2: Twelve hundred, what twelve hundred, I don't think because those
- 1:39:57Speaker 2: blues chipped so easily.
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: Yeah, I and report is on that.
- 1:40:02Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm sure it's gonna be incredibly, incredibly low. And
- 1:40:06Speaker 2: so I was just shocked to see what these things
- 1:40:09Speaker 2: are selling for because the color match, and I do
- 1:40:12Speaker 2: think they're really hard to finding good quality.
- 1:40:15Speaker 1: Yeah, so I think.
- 1:40:16Speaker 2: So I love the ad here. This is what I
- 1:40:18Speaker 2: didn't run across. I'm kind of jealous here.
- 1:40:22Speaker 1: Sorry, sorry to take it, but yeah, I think it's
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: also like you were talking about guys who are on
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: Hall of Fame tracks, Bobby wad Junior is right there,
- 1:40:30Speaker 1: so if you want to start tucking away stuff from him,
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: I think it's not a bad time to start doing. So.
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: So okay, let's get onto your second pick to put
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: into the PC here for our one hundred cards.
- 1:40:42Speaker 2: All right, So I like that you called out how
- 1:40:46Speaker 2: tops started using the number one hundred for like established
- 1:40:51Speaker 2: stars and things like that, because as I looked through
- 1:40:55Speaker 2: a lot of the numbered cards, I was finding like,
- 1:40:57Speaker 2: so I'll go out. I went vintage. I was looking
- 1:40:59Speaker 2: Bob Get and Hank Aaron, and I think I saw
- 1:41:03Speaker 2: Sandy Kofax and a few other guys, and I'm like, oh,
- 1:41:06Speaker 2: wouldn't this be great to find their rookie card number
- 1:41:09Speaker 2: one hundred, But they don't exist because the guys getting
- 1:41:11Speaker 2: one hundred were not big rookies, because that back in
- 1:41:15Speaker 2: the old vintage days, like that wasn't a thing with
- 1:41:17Speaker 2: cards like they. There wasn't this like big prospect following
- 1:41:20Speaker 2: because to your point, Wit wasn't number one hundred. Paul
- 1:41:24Speaker 2: Skenes was number one hundred. So it's a thing now
- 1:41:26Speaker 2: that they've started to do is almost like trying to
- 1:41:28Speaker 2: predict those guys, But back in the vintage days, it
- 1:41:32Speaker 2: wasn't there. So I actually went back to nineteen forty
- 1:41:35Speaker 2: nine and went to Bowman and found number one hundred
- 1:41:40Speaker 2: gil Hodges for the Dodgers. And so we are going
- 1:41:44Speaker 2: with a big name, and I went with a PSA
- 1:41:48Speaker 2: version just because when you get back to that vintage
- 1:41:51Speaker 2: it's it gets a little dicey for some of these
- 1:41:54Speaker 2: big rookies back in the day from a pure quality
- 1:41:57Speaker 2: authenticity perspective, So I wanted to make sure that my
- 1:42:00Speaker 2: gil Hodges and my PC was authenticated, which this would be.
- 1:42:04Speaker 2: So we're talking about PSA two, which is listed a
- 1:42:07Speaker 2: little over three hundred dollars, but gil Hodges obviously massive
- 1:42:11Speaker 2: name from the Dodgers back in the day, but I
- 1:42:15Speaker 2: think it was just so fun to see a rookie
- 1:42:18Speaker 2: card one hundred of such a big, big name guy.
- 1:42:22Speaker 2: I know it's Bowman, so you know, and back in
- 1:42:24Speaker 2: the day he didn't have rookie symbols and things like that.
- 1:42:28Speaker 2: But it's just a cool card add of the collection
- 1:42:31Speaker 2: and actually be a big name rookie on card one hundred.
- 1:42:34Speaker 2: So Wit can't quite hold it to Gill Hodges yet
- 1:42:39Speaker 2: my book, but you know, he's got the chance to surpass.
- 1:42:43Speaker 1: Yes, I think this is a great, great choice that
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: like it is a relatively icon of card too, that
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: you see this kind of pictured in several different places,
- 1:42:51Speaker 1: just given I mean, gil Hodges was popular enough that, like,
- 1:42:55Speaker 1: you know, he made it into the Hall of Fame
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: on the fame part at the end of the day. Yeah,
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: and so like it's a little unfortunate that you can't
- 1:43:01Speaker 1: quite get like the really bright blue eyes that gil
- 1:43:05Speaker 1: Hodges had, but that's what printing technology was back in
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: nineteen forty nine. So great choice. Also, I can close
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: the loop here on the Bobby Wit conundrum for that
- 1:43:15Speaker 1: royal blue because I found the pop report that Royal
- 1:43:19Speaker 1: blue card pop ten on the PSA ten for an
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: unnumbered parallel, just to give you how an idea of
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: how crazy low that is. The Independence stay parallel for
- 1:43:31Speaker 1: that card, which is an of seventy six numbered card
- 1:43:34Speaker 1: eighteen PSA tens, So there's almost double the number of
- 1:43:38Speaker 1: the blues. So that's why it's a ghosts. We're pretty penny.
- 1:43:41Speaker 2: Yeah, because you have remembered that blue borders were so
- 1:43:44Speaker 2: hard to not get chips. It's like when heritage has
- 1:43:47Speaker 2: black borders things like that. The Independence Day has a
- 1:43:50Speaker 2: lot of white boarder on it, so it can withstand
- 1:43:52Speaker 2: a little bit more. So, Hey, a sneaky card here.
- 1:43:55Speaker 2: You might run to that in the wild and recognize
- 1:43:57Speaker 2: a little value there.
- 1:43:58Speaker 1: Yeah, I think so, Okay, Well, I'm gonna round it
- 1:44:01Speaker 1: out with this is gonna be good. I'm excited for
- 1:44:03Speaker 1: this because this is a good oddball. I'm gonna go
- 1:44:06Speaker 1: ahead and put in nineteen twenty five Holland Creamers Washington
- 1:44:11Speaker 1: Senators number sixteen, Roger peckin Paw, which the reason I'm
- 1:44:17Speaker 1: putting it in is you're like, wait a second, how
- 1:44:20Speaker 1: is that deal with a one hundred? Look at the
- 1:44:22Speaker 1: date nineteen twenty five, one hundred years ago, and this
- 1:44:26Speaker 1: guy won the American League MVP in nineteen twenty five
- 1:44:29Speaker 1: as well. Just I love Roger peck and Paw, Like
- 1:44:32Speaker 1: he's there's something about baseball where like he just hits
- 1:44:37Speaker 1: the sweet spot of like all the things I love,
- 1:44:39Speaker 1: Like there is something I love about how far back
- 1:44:42Speaker 1: the game goes in terms of I mean, we grew
- 1:44:45Speaker 1: up in the town where old Hoss Bradbourne is buried,
- 1:44:48Speaker 1: and you know, he just had that incredible fifty six
- 1:44:50Speaker 1: win season back in the day and also had the
- 1:44:53Speaker 1: hilarious Twitter account that existed and just like charmed everybody
- 1:44:58Speaker 1: for a long time. But Peck and PAW's kind of
- 1:45:00Speaker 1: like in that class of like who won the nineteen
- 1:45:04Speaker 1: twenty five AL MVP. And you're also looking at like
- 1:45:07Speaker 1: I just wanted to put an old, old card in there.
- 1:45:10Speaker 1: We're looking at a card that is one and a
- 1:45:12Speaker 1: half inches by three inches, so it's about the size
- 1:45:15Speaker 1: of those Alan and Ginter tobacco card inserts, So it's
- 1:45:18Speaker 1: a little tiny guy. Only one of them has ever
- 1:45:20Speaker 1: been graded by PSA. Hopefully I can get the picture
- 1:45:24Speaker 1: to stick on the post because the only good picture
- 1:45:28Speaker 1: I can find of it is on TCDB, which there's
- 1:45:32Speaker 1: something with the way that they do their their web
- 1:45:34Speaker 1: page images where it doesn't stick and like create the
- 1:45:38Speaker 1: URL very well. So hopefully it is up there when
- 1:45:41Speaker 1: you're looking for this card, but if not, you can
- 1:45:43Speaker 1: at least go to tcdb dot com and see where
- 1:45:45Speaker 1: I've linked. Just a really great card of Reger Pickin Paul.
- 1:45:50Speaker 1: He is a very very ugly dude and also great
- 1:45:54Speaker 1: for Immaculate Grid because he won the nineteen twenty five MVP,
- 1:46:00Speaker 1: so it goes down as a Twins MVP win, barely
- 1:46:02Speaker 1: gets used whenever that category comes up, barely gets used
- 1:46:05Speaker 1: in any other MVP kind of formats or All Star formats,
- 1:46:11Speaker 1: or he also played for Cleveland and the White Sox.
- 1:46:15Speaker 1: So I just kind of have this like love relationship
- 1:46:19Speaker 1: with Roger Prekinpaw that I just want to really fortify
- 1:46:23Speaker 1: into our PC with this card, one of the few
- 1:46:27Speaker 1: cards of him out there. This set is actually to
- 1:46:30Speaker 1: commemorate the nineteen twenty four Washington Centers winning the World Series,
- 1:46:35Speaker 1: so that's why it says World Champs on there, even
- 1:46:37Speaker 1: though they lost the twenty five World Series to the Pirates,
- 1:46:40Speaker 1: so That's what I'm going with the nineteen to twenty
- 1:46:42Speaker 1: five Holland Creamers Washington Centers Number sixteen, Roger peckinpath. That's
- 1:46:46Speaker 1: so much fun to say.
- 1:46:48Speaker 2: This is a deep cut and I love it. My
- 1:46:50Speaker 2: biggest question though, is why did Peck and Paul win
- 1:46:52Speaker 2: the MVP in nineteen twenty five. That's like one of
- 1:46:54Speaker 2: his worst career seasons in a two point seven war
- 1:46:59Speaker 2: season and I think he had one four, five, six, seven,
- 1:47:03Speaker 2: eight nine seasons better than that, and he won the
- 1:47:05Speaker 2: MVP that year, So I don't know, like maybe MVP
- 1:47:09Speaker 2: voting was done after the World Series or something like.
- 1:47:12Speaker 2: I don't I don't know what what it really came
- 1:47:14Speaker 2: down to, because he actually, uh had a decent run
- 1:47:20Speaker 2: in the postseason that year, but I'm not I wasn't
- 1:47:22Speaker 2: like he it wasn't like his fielding was you know,
- 1:47:26Speaker 2: absolutely amazing. You know he you know, he was a
- 1:47:30Speaker 2: decent fielder, but like not that great. So like, I
- 1:47:34Speaker 2: don't know what what led to it. So I have
- 1:47:36Speaker 2: some deep research to do for the rest of the
- 1:47:38Speaker 2: evening here to really understand what Peck and Pod did
- 1:47:41Speaker 2: to win that MVP. And this is a deep, deep
- 1:47:45Speaker 2: cut and I love that you somehow snuck a really
- 1:47:48Speaker 2: random card in the fact that I had to ask
- 1:47:49Speaker 2: you before the show, why in the world did you
- 1:47:52Speaker 2: even put this in? How did you get this under
- 1:47:54Speaker 2: the one hundred and you went with one hundred year
- 1:47:57Speaker 2: anniversary for the Washington Senator World Series. So good job,
- 1:48:02Speaker 2: great great way to close out our one hundredth episode
- 1:48:05Speaker 2: here on cards and categories.
- 1:48:07Speaker 1: Yeah, and I can help you unpack some of that
- 1:48:10Speaker 1: mystery around Roger Peckinpah being the foremost Roger Peckinpah expert
- 1:48:15Speaker 1: on this podcast. One is that the if you look
- 1:48:19Speaker 1: at the years where he was better coincides with playing
- 1:48:23Speaker 1: some guy named George Herman Ruth on the Yankees in
- 1:48:26Speaker 1: his prime, actually his last year there is like one
- 1:48:29Speaker 1: of the last years I think Wally Pip was the
- 1:48:31Speaker 1: full time player and so like he just missed out
- 1:48:34Speaker 1: on those murderers Row Yankee. So Peg and Pah only
- 1:48:38Speaker 1: got that nineteen twenty four World Series and kind of
- 1:48:41Speaker 1: missed all the great run of the Yankees. But I
- 1:48:43Speaker 1: think he also won the twenty five MVP in terms
- 1:48:45Speaker 1: of like the classic like oh, the Senators won the Pennant.
- 1:48:50Speaker 2: He's the true most Valuable Player.
- 1:48:52Speaker 1: Yeah, and I mean he was a good shortstop. He
- 1:48:54Speaker 1: was a good defensive shortstop. He was recognized for that,
- 1:48:56Speaker 1: So I think it was a little bit of canon
- 1:48:59Speaker 1: until like you know, like honestly like the Zolio versize
- 1:49:05Speaker 1: win for the Twins in like the seventies as well too,
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: So it's kind of funny that those of parallel. But
- 1:49:11Speaker 1: that's that's your couple of reasons. But yeah, I love
- 1:49:14Speaker 1: Regor Peck and Pau's career because it is one of
- 1:49:17Speaker 1: the goofyr MVP races you'll ever see. All right, Well,
- 1:49:22Speaker 1: with that, we've had a blast here on episode one hundred.
