- 0:00SPEAKER_00: What uh what are you doing there, 3PO?
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: Taking one last look, sir.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: Star Wars movie on hold.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: What is Luke is film doing?
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: Hey everyone, it's Gilbert K here.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: Welcome back to my channel.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: Star Wars Can Travel at a speed of flight.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: Getting a movie made, and apparently that's a different department.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: Taika Watiti's Star Wars movie is now on ice.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: On ice.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: Han Solo hears that and goes, trust me, you got a second opinion.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: This project was announced in 2020 and it's now 2026.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: A kid who heard that announcement in high school could have finished university and started paying off student loans.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: The kid has a degree.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: We're still waiting for a movie.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Gilbert K Take.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: I'm Gilbert K, and today we're talking about Taika Waititi, Star Wars, and the most powerful force in Hollywood.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: Still in development.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: So what actually happened?
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: Here's the news.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: An interview published by Inverse on October 18.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: Taika Waititi said his Star Wars movie is on ice.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: He and writer Tony McNamara are working on different projects together.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: He also left the door open to returning someday.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: So on hold, no confirmed funeral.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: Please don't run into the comments screaming.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: Gilbert said Disney buried Star Wars.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: I haven't even finished my coffee.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: The official announcement goes back to May 4, 2020.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: Lucasfilm announced Waititi could direct and co-write a new Star Wars movie.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: They did not announce a release date.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: And that last part matters.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: They didn't promise us a specific Friday, but six years later, you can understand someone asking, are we at least picking a Friday?
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: At this point, I'd accept a season.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: Coming sometimes when it's a little chilly.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: Great, we've narrowed down to Canada.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: The movie before the movie.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: Here's what gets me about Hollywood announcement.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: You can make a movie sound huge before there's anything for us to watch.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: You hear the director's name, you hear the franchise.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: There's a dramatic headline.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: Your brain does the rest.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: And suddenly you're imagining the trailer, the music, the opening night.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: You've mentally bought popcorn for a film that might still be three people emailing about lunch.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: And I understand why announcement is exciting.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: Taika Waititi and Star Wars, that's a combination people are going to talk about.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: Some people hear that and say that could be fun.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: Other people start arguing before there's a script they've read.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: We haven't met the character yet, and someone has already made a 40-minute video explaining why the character ruined their childhood.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: Sir, the character doesn't have a name yet.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: At this studio, that's how it starts.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: I don't think fans are wrong to care.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: Caring is why these franchises survive.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: But announcement create a little promise in your head, even if the studio hasn't made an actual promise about the date.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: So you file it under things I'm looking forward to, then years pass and that folder starts looking like the drawer in your kitchen full of cables.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: You don't know what half of them connect to, you're just afraid to throw anything away.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: Let me put my producer hat on.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: Now I produce independent films, so I have some sympathy here.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: Making a film takes work that nobody sees.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: Getting people together, finding the right partners, working out the money, getting everyone's schedule to line up.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: You can believe in a project and still struggle to move it forward.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: And sometimes a delay protects a film, sometimes a story needs more work.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: Sometimes people have to step away.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: Those are general filmmaking realities.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: We don't know the full reason behind this particular project going on hold.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: I'm not sitting in those look as film meetings, but if I wear, I'd bring snacks.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: I have a feeling we'd be there for a while.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: So I'm not going to pretend six years automatically means six years of people doing nothing.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: But from the audience side, all we see is the gap between the exciting announcement and the next clear update.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: And the gap gets filled by rumors, by theories, by somebody who with a microphone saying, My source tells me.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: Your source is another man with a microphone.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: We've built a podcast pyramid scheme.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: Is announcing early actually helping?
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: Here's the question I want to ask Lucasfilm.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: What do you gain by getting people excited so early?
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: I can see the immediate attention, people talk, headlines happen.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: Fans start imagining possibilities, but attention comes with memory.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: If you invite us to look forward to something, some of us are going to remember.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: I remember things I ordered online for$12.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: You think I'm forgetting the entire Star Wars movie?
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: Imagine a restaurant announcing a brilliant new chef.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: You get excited, you tell your friends, six years later, you ask about dinner.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: They say the chef is exploring another kitchen.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: Good for the chef, but should I keep the reservation?
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: And that's where I think the frustration comes from.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: You can respect the filmmaker's choice and still want a clearer idea of what an announcement means.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: Is it an idea you're exploring?
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: A film you're actively preparing, something ready to shoot.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: Tell us which days we're celebrating.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: Because right now, the audience can end up throwing a baby shower for a first date.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: And yes, Star Wars movies are moving forward now before this turns into Lucasfilm never makes anything.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: Let's bring in an actual example.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: Star Wars Starfighter, directed by Sean Levy and starring Lauren Gosling, has a scheduled theatrical release of May 28, 2027.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: Lucasfilm officially announced the start of production back in August 2025, and this is a separate project from White T's film.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: Different filmmaker, different production, and different situation.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: And Ryan Gosling has not taken over Taika's homework, and production is the kind of milestone that makes me pay attention.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: People have gathered, cameras have rolled, someone has had to find parking near a film set.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: Now I'm interested.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: An official photo from a set gives me more confidence than a logo floating in space.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: I can make a logo float in space, give me a laptop in an afternoon, by dinner, I'll have an announced a trilogy.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: Making the first movie, that's where the trouble starts.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: So I still think there's room to be excited about the future of Star Wars.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: I just want my excitement attached to something more solid than a famous name and a nice font.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: What would bring the excitement back?
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: For me, it starts with a story I can explain to a friend.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: Who are we following?
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: What do they want?
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: What happens if they fail?
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: Give me a reason to care about the person holding the lightsaber before you show me how expensive the lightsaber looks.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: I don't need homework to feel something.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: If you recommend a movie and immediately say, first, watch these four shows.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: You have given me a part-time job.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: Does it come with dental?
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: I also want space for a filmmaker to do something interesting.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: Hitting someone with a personality should mean we get to feel that personality in the film.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: Of course, that doesn't mean every choice will work.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: We can disagree, and that's part of watching a movie.
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: But I'd rather have something worth discussing on screen than spend years discussing whether it will reach a screen.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: Give us the adventure, then let us argue about the adventure.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: We're very good at that.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: We've been practicing for decades.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: My Gilbert K.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: Take, here's what I learned.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: If Taika Waititi and his collaborators need to put this film aside, that may be the right decision for them.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: Forcing a movie forward just because we remembered announcement wouldn't help anybody.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: But I think studios should be more careful about how they introduce projects to the public.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: If something is early, say it's early.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: If it's moving into production, that's a different level of news.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: Help the audience understand the difference we can handle.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: We're exploring an idea.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: We're all explored ideas.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: I once explored, go into the gym before breakfast.
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: Very exciting announcement, still looking for a director.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: And when there's a real progress, celebrate it.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: Show us the cast together, show us the set, eventually show us a trailer that makes us feel something.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: You don't have to reveal the whole plot, just give us a reason to believe the journey has started.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: So I want to hear from you.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: Would you rather studios announce movies early and keep you involved or wait until filming starts before making a big announcement?
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: And were you looking forward to Taika White T Star Wars movie?
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: Tell me why.
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: I want to hear from you and I want to hear more than Disney bad or fans bad.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: We can have a conversation without turning the comments into lightsaber fights.
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: Although that would be easier to moderate.
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: Everybody gets one swing, then you're muted.
