- 0:23Speaker 3: Welcome to Let's Talk with Carl Lee. Let's Talk is
- 0:26Speaker 3: probably presented by Attorney Frank Walker. Real Talk, real experience,
- 0:30Speaker 3: real results, Frank Walker Law dot Com. Let that conversation
- 0:34Speaker 3: begin on Let's Talk.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Hello, ladies and gentlemen.
- 0:38Speaker 4: This is Carl Lee and I'm in the building with
- 0:42Speaker 4: Lisa Odie Hello, and Hollis Lewis, my co host of
- 0:46Speaker 4: the show.
- 0:48Speaker 2: And what an interesting day to day is for me,
- 0:53Speaker 2: at least for me.
- 0:54Speaker 4: I have kind of waited and been dying to actually
- 0:59Speaker 4: get in to the w NBA.
- 1:04Speaker 5: Right text threat I have.
- 1:06Speaker 4: I have absolutely been wanting to to to to get
- 1:11Speaker 4: into it, Yes, because I just can't imagine. Okay, my
- 1:18Speaker 4: my first issue, Okay, the very first issue that I
- 1:21Speaker 4: really have is how is it possible that your best
- 1:27Speaker 4: player Caitlyn Clark. Now I don't I'm not even gonna
- 1:30Speaker 4: say she's the best, but I was going to say
- 1:34Speaker 4: most recognizable. Yes, I'm gonna say she may not be
- 1:37Speaker 4: the best. Player, okay, but she's the most notable player.
- 1:42Speaker 4: She is the draw. And I think the key point.
- 1:45Speaker 5: Is Angel Reese may have something to say about that.
- 1:48Speaker 5: She might.
- 1:49Speaker 4: She might, but I'm not watching because of her, you know.
- 1:52Speaker 4: And I don't think I think the people. There are
- 1:54Speaker 4: a few people who may watch her because they like her.
- 1:59Speaker 4: But Kaitlyn Clark is the unique athlete that we rarely
- 2:04Speaker 4: see because she is the one that you eat that
- 2:08Speaker 4: you absolutely love or you absolutely hate. And when you
- 2:12Speaker 4: have that, you have something.
- 2:14Speaker 2: You know.
- 2:15Speaker 4: There's a the Michael Jordan thing. You either loved him
- 2:20Speaker 4: or you hated him. You hated him because you knew
- 2:23Speaker 4: he beat your team.
- 2:24Speaker 2: You didn't really.
- 2:26Speaker 4: Hate his basketball skills. You hated the fact that he
- 2:31Speaker 4: beat your team. And I think Caitlyn Clark is the
- 2:39Speaker 4: the that person. I think she's the greatest attraction for
- 2:46Speaker 4: the w n b A and I think they lack
- 2:51Speaker 4: they do lack pay and and and I just and
- 2:57Speaker 4: compared to the NBA. Well, I say that's the problem.
- 3:01Speaker 4: You can't I get you. I get I get you,
- 3:05Speaker 4: I get you, But it's too far. If I'm if
- 3:08Speaker 4: I'm a female and I'm I'm a former basketball player,
- 3:11Speaker 4: and I'm watching the game and I realized, how what
- 3:14Speaker 4: the what the w n b A is paying these
- 3:17Speaker 4: these women versus what the NBA is playing them.
- 3:21Speaker 2: I got a problem. But that's but I got you.
- 3:23Speaker 2: But that's not that comparison.
- 3:25Speaker 4: And you can't compare it that way because the numbers
- 3:28Speaker 4: don't speak to that, right. And so when you're looking
- 3:31Speaker 4: at like like and we're just attendant, and I would say,
- 3:33Speaker 4: I would argue both points, right, I would argue that
- 3:35Speaker 4: when you're talking about Kaylen Clark being a face of league,
- 3:38Speaker 4: I would argue that college basketball, college women's back, women's
- 3:42Speaker 4: college basketball is the is what propelled this, right and
- 3:46Speaker 4: but who.
- 3:47Speaker 2: But but let me let me tell them there who
- 3:50Speaker 2: was the person that she was a face to it?
- 3:53Speaker 2: She wasn't defaced, oh.
- 3:56Speaker 4: Because I think you look at Don Stanley, you look
- 3:58Speaker 4: at Angely, you look at South Carolina, you know at
- 4:00Speaker 4: Juju Watkins. I think the collective college women's college basketball
- 4:05Speaker 4: sparked this and then people started to pay attention to
- 4:08Speaker 4: the WNBA. And I would say, and I would give
- 4:11Speaker 4: her credit, she's definitely a face. But going back to
- 4:14Speaker 4: the numbers of this, right, because when you have a
- 4:17Speaker 4: league that's losing forty million.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Dollars in twenty twenty four.
- 4:22Speaker 4: And we're talking about at the height of the hype
- 4:25Speaker 4: right last year, she's rookie all that stuff. That's problematic
- 4:30Speaker 4: when you talk about a league again that at one
- 4:33Speaker 4: time was heavily subsidized by the NBA. I think at
- 4:37Speaker 4: one time it was up around seventy five to eighty
- 4:40Speaker 4: percent of the teams in the WNBA were owned by
- 4:44Speaker 4: NBA ownership groups. That's not the case anymore. That's going
- 4:48Speaker 4: to be different. So I think, and again what we
- 4:51Speaker 4: can argue is that are they getting their fair percentage?
- 4:56Speaker 4: Because I think they're getting nine percent that's to split
- 5:00Speaker 4: between the league, the ownership and the w n B
- 5:02Speaker 4: A p A. So I think that the percentage is
- 5:05Speaker 4: what you could argue. But I don't think and I
- 5:08Speaker 4: think we lose ourselves when you start to do that
- 5:10Speaker 4: comparative analysis between the w and the NBA.
- 5:13Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm team Hollis here.
- 5:15Speaker 6: I'm sorry, Carl, but I feel like this past weekend
- 5:19Speaker 6: with the w NBA All Star Game, you know that
- 5:21Speaker 6: the ladies came out wearing those shirts. Of course most
- 5:23Speaker 6: saw that the pay us what you Owe us shirts
- 5:27Speaker 6: crowd chanted, you know, pay them or pay us all
- 5:31Speaker 6: all the things.
- 5:31Speaker 5: They were supporting the girls.
- 5:33Speaker 6: But you know what Hollis is alluded to is the
- 5:36Speaker 6: difference in financial gains. I mean, you cannot It's like
- 5:40Speaker 6: comparing apples and oranges when you're comparing the w n
- 5:43Speaker 6: b A to the NBA. Just just for example, he's
- 5:46Speaker 6: throwing out percentages in numbers of attendance and all that,
- 5:50Speaker 6: the difference even in media deals. I mean, you can
- 5:52Speaker 6: look at some numbers I looked at today. You know,
- 5:56Speaker 6: the w n b A had a two point two
- 5:57Speaker 6: billion dollar media deal. That sounds that sounds great, right,
- 6:00Speaker 6: sounds like a lot of money. Compare that to a
- 6:03Speaker 6: seventy five million or billion dollar with the NBA. So
- 6:08Speaker 6: I mean the money that that's not. You know, they
- 6:11Speaker 6: want a piece of the pie, but the pie is
- 6:12Speaker 6: not it's not out of.
- 6:13Speaker 5: The oven yet. They need to wait a little bit,
- 6:15Speaker 5: you know what I mean?
- 6:16Speaker 4: And I like I like that analogy, But for me,
- 6:21Speaker 4: I'm thinking it's always been And we'll probably touch on
- 6:26Speaker 4: this on a later topic, but I'm gonna just throw
- 6:29Speaker 4: this out there. Like like the league, the NFL, okay,
- 6:34Speaker 4: the NFL at one point they were there was absolutely
- 6:37Speaker 4: all all the numbers would speak all they can't pay us,
- 6:40Speaker 4: they can't pass, they can't pass this money. Now they're
- 6:45Speaker 4: paying this kind of crazy numbers, just hundreds of millions
- 6:50Speaker 4: of dollars constantly. Right, I'm not sure that what we
- 6:55Speaker 4: read all the time, what they're saying all the time
- 6:59Speaker 4: is correct.
- 7:01Speaker 2: I think when you have.
- 7:04Speaker 4: And again I'm gonna make I'm gonna say, Caitlin, I
- 7:07Speaker 4: believe that she is one. She's my favorite player in
- 7:10Speaker 4: the league, specifically because you wouldn't know that because of
- 7:16Speaker 4: her game, because of her game, and I think that.
- 7:22Speaker 3: She is.
- 7:24Speaker 2: I think she's I think she's the face.
- 7:26Speaker 4: I think the fact that you allow her, you allow
- 7:31Speaker 4: her to get beat up to the degree where officials
- 7:36Speaker 4: you gotta you gotta suspend fire officials because they're not
- 7:41Speaker 4: calling fouls on her, Like.
- 7:44Speaker 2: I don't, hollis.
- 7:45Speaker 4: You you can't tell me that she's not getting beat
- 7:49Speaker 4: up physically beat up by other players and nothing's getting called,
- 7:55Speaker 4: but I mean agating, Michael Jortan got beat up by
- 7:57Speaker 4: other players, nothing like that, nothing like did you nothing?
- 8:01Speaker 4: Nothing like Michael Jordan got whooped by the Detroit Pistons.
- 8:05Speaker 4: And those early teams in the eighties by the Celtics.
- 8:07Speaker 4: He got beat on. They had to change the rules
- 8:10Speaker 4: because of Michael Jordan. But I'm saying, what did they do?
- 8:12Speaker 2: They had to.
- 8:13Speaker 4: Change the rules because because of Michael Jordan.
- 8:17Speaker 2: She's not that. Oh my god, she's not that. She's
- 8:21Speaker 2: she's not that.
- 8:21Speaker 4: I don't know if we've seen that person yet, but
- 8:24Speaker 4: I don't think she's she's it. She's going to be
- 8:26Speaker 4: a very good No, she's not because you again, if
- 8:30Speaker 4: you don't have nobody, somebody gets to be the top.
- 8:33Speaker 4: Asian Wilson is the top right now.
- 8:35Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying. Forrest play on the court.
- 8:37Speaker 4: You can say other things, but she's not the Michael
- 8:40Speaker 4: Jordan because right now, you even in this even in
- 8:43Speaker 4: his early years, Michael Jordan's win the scoring titles and
- 8:46Speaker 4: doing things before he got to the championship levels. So
- 8:48Speaker 4: she has to get to a point where statistically that's validated.
- 8:52Speaker 4: And it's eventually gonna have to come to a point
- 8:54Speaker 4: where you start to win multiple championships. And we haven't
- 8:57Speaker 4: seen that yet. But but I'll let you go just quickly.
- 9:01Speaker 4: But to my point, it's just like Lisa said, this league,
- 9:05Speaker 4: whether who's whoever's the face of it, they sort of it.
- 9:10Speaker 4: It would be a strategic mistake for them to have
- 9:13Speaker 4: a strike at this moment, because I don't think the
- 9:16Speaker 4: league is strong enough, and I think they're teetering on
- 9:19Speaker 4: the point of being like that fourth or fifth major
- 9:21Speaker 4: sport in the US. They're almost to that point. But
- 9:25Speaker 4: if you start to let it go now and you
- 9:28Speaker 4: have a workstop as now, that could really really damage
- 9:31Speaker 4: the league moving forward, and they going to have to
- 9:33Speaker 4: wait on that money a little bit, and unfortunately some
- 9:36Speaker 4: of them are going to have to sacrifice until the
- 9:38Speaker 4: money can get bigger in the next few years.
- 9:40Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, I agree with that point, but I'm
- 9:43Speaker 6: going to go back to the point about her not
- 9:45Speaker 6: being the face of the WNBA, because right now she's
- 9:48Speaker 6: the closest thing to it that they have. I mean,
- 9:52Speaker 6: you know, the problem with her is I think there's
- 9:55Speaker 6: just a basic, I don't want to say lack of respect.
- 9:58Speaker 6: Maybe there's too much respect, and that's the reason she
- 10:00Speaker 6: gets the treatment she does on the court. They know
- 10:02Speaker 6: they have to contain her, and sometimes they have to
- 10:04Speaker 6: hurt her to do that. But I also think that
- 10:06Speaker 6: she doesn't have a whole lot of support, even when
- 10:08Speaker 6: it comes from the commissioner. I mean, you know, Kathy Engelbert,
- 10:11Speaker 6: I think in this past month or so, she was
- 10:14Speaker 6: in an interview with a station of some type and
- 10:18Speaker 6: they were asking her, you know, how do you account
- 10:20Speaker 6: for this viewership being up like one hundred and seventy
- 10:22Speaker 6: percent with the WNBA. Do you know do you kind
- 10:27Speaker 6: of associate that with Caitlin Clark? And her answer was, well,
- 10:30Speaker 6: she and Angel Reese, which which Angel does contribute, but
- 10:33Speaker 6: I'm still saying Caitlin is the reason we're drawing in
- 10:36Speaker 6: the viewership numbers that we are. The other thing she
- 10:39Speaker 6: said was and I thought this was kind of like
- 10:41Speaker 6: out there, but she said she attributed it to their app,
- 10:45Speaker 6: their WNBA app, and she feels like the reason that
- 10:48Speaker 6: more people are watching this because they did these improvements
- 10:51Speaker 6: on their app and now it's more easily accessible to fans. Well,
- 10:55Speaker 6: first of all, the fans aren't going to seek out
- 10:56Speaker 6: the app to watch a game unless they want to
- 10:59Speaker 6: see a particular player or team, correct, I would think.
- 11:02Speaker 4: So.
- 11:02Speaker 6: I didn't know what that shade was about, but it
- 11:04Speaker 6: was definitely thrown towards Caitlin in that conversation. But you know,
- 11:07Speaker 6: here's here's your answer. Let's let's let's let Caitlin go,
- 11:11Speaker 6: you know, to an overseas league, you know, maximizer earnings
- 11:14Speaker 6: and see where the w n B a NBA's lapped
- 11:16Speaker 6: after that, I see how the viewership goes.
- 11:19Speaker 4: I'm curious to what you what you how you answer this, hollis,
- 11:23Speaker 4: if Caitlyn were to sit down and say, okay, right,
- 11:30Speaker 4: y'all don't need me. I'm I'm I'm gonna I'm gonna sit.
- 11:34Speaker 4: I'm gonna sit the rest of the year out, you
- 11:37Speaker 4: think that they would lose viewership.
- 11:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it would definitely lose some. And again
- 11:44Speaker 2: I'm not not gonna say I'm gonna say not some.
- 11:47Speaker 2: I think it would lose some majority.
- 11:48Speaker 4: But I also think to to the previous point, I
- 11:53Speaker 4: do think this was about women's college basketball, and you
- 11:57Speaker 4: have these two superstars anguries in Kaylyn Clark ascending together.
- 12:02Speaker 4: This is really because because again this is the w
- 12:06Speaker 4: n ba's magic magic in Larry Bird moment. They didn't
- 12:10Speaker 4: do it right now because they both should have went
- 12:13Speaker 4: to different conferences. So in the hopes of one day
- 12:16Speaker 4: they're meeting in the championship. So this was their moment.
- 12:19Speaker 4: So much as we like to talk about, you know,
- 12:22Speaker 4: Kayln Clark, this was about Angel Rees too. This was
- 12:24Speaker 4: about those two entities emerging. You have the girl from
- 12:28Speaker 4: the South, you have the girl from the Midwest. They
- 12:31Speaker 4: met in college. They had this rivalry in college, and
- 12:33Speaker 4: then they're going to have this rivalry in the w
- 12:36Speaker 4: n B. A. That's part of this narrative. This isn't
- 12:38Speaker 4: just about Kaylyn Clark has Okay.
- 12:42Speaker 6: I mean, once again, I agree to it. I agree
- 12:47Speaker 6: to a point. But then let's look at let's look
- 12:49Speaker 6: at numbers. Let's look at attendance data. Okay, let's do
- 12:52Speaker 6: some comparisons, all right, because.
- 12:54Speaker 2: Numbers don't lie.
- 12:55Speaker 5: People can lie. Numbers don't, all right.
- 12:57Speaker 6: So when we're looking at the Indiana Fever, they're attended
- 13:00Speaker 6: it numbers. Okay, they're averaging sixteen to seventeen thousand fans
- 13:04Speaker 6: per game.
- 13:05Speaker 5: Okay.
- 13:06Speaker 6: When you look at the Chicago skot which is Angel
- 13:08Speaker 6: Reese's team, they're averaging seven to nine thousand per game.
- 13:12Speaker 5: Okay.
- 13:13Speaker 6: When they play each other in Chicago, they had more
- 13:18Speaker 6: than nineteen thousand fans show up. So taking those numbers.
- 13:23Speaker 6: What could tell me?
- 13:24Speaker 5: Guys? What what do you take from that?
- 13:26Speaker 2: It's about the robbery, Well, it is.
- 13:29Speaker 6: About the rivalry, but if you take Caitlin out.
- 13:32Speaker 2: Of the try it he is.
- 13:34Speaker 4: What I'm saying is like sports, sports in general is
- 13:39Speaker 4: about robvalry. Like you have the Commanders and Cowboys, you
- 13:42Speaker 4: have the cowboys and Giants. It's the Packers in the
- 13:47Speaker 4: in the Vikings. It's about rivalries. And I don't think
- 13:51Speaker 4: we've never seen, at least far as in popular culture
- 13:55Speaker 4: the wn BA concertain we never really seen like a
- 13:57Speaker 4: robbery that everybody can grab on to. And those two women,
- 14:01Speaker 4: those two players have a ribvalry that everybody tunes into.
- 14:06Speaker 4: And they got a game Sunday at three o'clock which
- 14:08Speaker 4: I'll be watching. Okay, so I agree, I agree, But
- 14:12Speaker 4: I think that you know that rivalry is made by
- 14:19Speaker 4: Caitlyn Clark. It's it's made one Okay, Okay, I'm gonna.
- 14:26Speaker 5: Jab back and forth pretty good, don't you like? In
- 14:29Speaker 5: social media?
- 14:31Speaker 2: But I think here's you know Reese, what she can do.
- 14:35Speaker 4: She's a she's a rebounder, she's you know, she scores inside.
- 14:40Speaker 4: So she's that quote. What I'm gonna say, is like
- 14:43Speaker 4: the old school basketball. Yeah, man, Okay, that's who she is.
- 14:49Speaker 4: Now who is Steph Curry? So Caitlyn is is that
- 14:55Speaker 4: person who everybody loves.
- 14:59Speaker 2: Even if you don't like it.
- 15:01Speaker 4: You know he's gonna hit that three pointer and you
- 15:04Speaker 4: know she's gonna hit it. And so the comparison gets lost,
- 15:11Speaker 4: or to me has it fails because it's a different
- 15:16Speaker 4: type of player. It's like it's like a quarterback who's
- 15:20Speaker 4: a great who's got.
- 15:21Speaker 2: A great arm, but can't run.
- 15:24Speaker 4: In today's game, you got to be able to throw
- 15:27Speaker 4: the ball and you got to be able to run.
- 15:29Speaker 4: And I think Caitlyn has everything that you could possibly have, passing.
- 15:37Speaker 2: All of that kind of She's well rounded.
- 15:40Speaker 4: And again I'm not saying she's not like a facing
- 15:44Speaker 4: She's not.
- 15:45Speaker 2: She is. I'm not saying she's not prominent.
- 15:48Speaker 4: But what I'm saying is like, I don't think she's
- 15:51Speaker 4: it's just about her, Like, okay, I don't think it's
- 15:55Speaker 4: just about her, all right, Well, at least you got
- 15:59Speaker 4: anything else.
- 16:00Speaker 6: I just want to you know, I found a quote
- 16:02Speaker 6: from Kobe Bryant today that I think fits this perfect,
- 16:04Speaker 6: this whole conversation haters are a good problem to have.
- 16:07Speaker 6: Nobody hates the good ones. They hate the great ones.
- 16:10Speaker 6: So there you have it.
- 16:11Speaker 2: So, Hollis, thank you. You hate on the great one,
- 16:20Speaker 2: We still love it. All right. So listen, do you
- 16:23Speaker 2: have anything? I'm good?
- 16:25Speaker 4: Okay, all right, So, Hollis, you you had mentioned something
- 16:30Speaker 4: in the text line about the NFL. So introduce us
- 16:38Speaker 4: into this this new conversation.
- 16:40Speaker 2: Okay.
- 16:40Speaker 4: So several several months ago January, specifically, there were some
- 16:45Speaker 4: claims of collusion that I guess the NFL PA were
- 16:50Speaker 4: making against several NFL owners and basically, and kind of
- 16:54Speaker 4: without getting into too much of the weeds, what happened
- 16:58Speaker 4: was that because of that big Sean Watson contract with
- 17:01Speaker 4: the Cleveland Browns, this huge contract and obviously didn't work out,
- 17:05Speaker 4: there was claim that some NFL owners were on a
- 17:08Speaker 4: text line between one another and basically what they were
- 17:11Speaker 4: saying like, hey, we gotta nip this in above, we
- 17:13Speaker 4: can't have these big contracts. Specifically, hasn't relates to quarterbacks.
- 17:17Speaker 4: The claim had so much validally that it actually went
- 17:20Speaker 4: to an arbitrader in January and they had a whole like,
- 17:24Speaker 4: you know, and if you don't know what the arbitrador is.
- 17:25Speaker 4: It's like a you know, sort of like a between
- 17:29Speaker 4: It's like it's like a judge. It's like a you know,
- 17:32Speaker 4: informal court proceeding, if you will. And from there, the arbitrator,
- 17:39Speaker 4: Chris Donnery, ruled that there was no collusion between the
- 17:42Speaker 4: NFL owners and to keep salaries down. However, the sort
- 17:47Speaker 4: of the crux of what this means, why this is
- 17:50Speaker 4: a prominent story because this story was not given dished
- 17:54Speaker 4: out to the media, so nobody knew about this story.
- 17:57Speaker 4: I mean, this happened in January, and you had a
- 17:59Speaker 4: form ESPN reporter actually released these finings in the sixty
- 18:03Speaker 4: one page document I think last month, So for six months,
- 18:07Speaker 4: nobody even knew that this quote unquote court case happened.
- 18:12Speaker 4: So that's kind of an issue, and you know, I
- 18:15Speaker 4: find it problematic within the context of the document, it
- 18:18Speaker 4: seemed like something fishy was going on, although there was
- 18:21Speaker 4: no collusion found. As a former athlete, you could never
- 18:27Speaker 4: convince me that something didn't happen.
- 18:32Speaker 2: That's not that I mean, the reality of.
- 18:38Speaker 4: It when you go back to the days when I
- 18:41Speaker 4: was playing, it was so hard, you know, it was
- 18:46Speaker 4: so hard to negotiate a contract to get just a
- 18:49Speaker 4: little bit of money, you know that we thought was
- 18:53Speaker 4: still a lot of money back then. And the fact
- 18:56Speaker 4: of the matter is that I find it problematic because
- 19:00Speaker 4: this report, although they, you know, ruled that no collusion
- 19:03Speaker 4: was found, that the players were blocked from accessing this report.
- 19:08Speaker 4: So I don't I don't know why you wouldn't release
- 19:11Speaker 4: this report if nothing was done. And the reporter who
- 19:16Speaker 4: who brought this to the light of his his name
- 19:18Speaker 4: is Pablo Torres, and I pod I bet you, and
- 19:23Speaker 4: you probably can't get a player to talk about it
- 19:27Speaker 4: because I'm sure that's been a hush thing. You know,
- 19:29Speaker 4: we don't need to be talking about this. We're in camp.
- 19:32Speaker 4: Let's just get ready for the season. Let's forget all
- 19:34Speaker 4: that kind of stuff. That's kind of how stuff dies.
- 19:39Speaker 5: But the time of year it was released, you're saying yes.
- 19:42Speaker 4: And and and and there's nothing, there's nothing that that
- 19:45Speaker 4: would would would shock me. Yeah, I just I mean
- 19:48Speaker 4: from Mott Gohilly's I'm sorry, yeah, but I just would say,
- 19:52Speaker 4: you know, again, I know conspiracy theorists per se, but
- 19:55Speaker 4: you know, the idea that owners don't talk amongst one another, right,
- 20:01Speaker 4: the idea that they don't talk about player contracts and
- 20:04Speaker 4: what's good for the league and good for obviously them.
- 20:08Speaker 4: I find it hard to believe. Now, does is that
- 20:11Speaker 4: tantamount to collusion?
- 20:14Speaker 6: I don't know, Okay, So to help me understand this
- 20:16Speaker 6: in Mahala, so the arbitrator ruled there wasn't sufficient evidence
- 20:21Speaker 6: that the teams colluded to follow the advice, but they
- 20:25Speaker 6: did find evidence that the NFL Commissioner and the General
- 20:29Speaker 6: Counsel encouraged teams to reduce Yeah, they're guaranteed money. So
- 20:33Speaker 6: to me, it's like do as I say, not as
- 20:38Speaker 6: I do. To a degree, it's like saying, okay, we
- 20:41Speaker 6: got caught telling you to do something wrong. But if
- 20:44Speaker 6: you'd have got caught, you would have been punished in
- 20:46Speaker 6: some degree. Absolutely, But they don't even get a handslap
- 20:49Speaker 6: because of who they are. So to me, all of
- 20:51Speaker 6: it's it's just it's a dirty, dirty situation.
- 20:56Speaker 4: I have always thought that, you know, this will this
- 20:58Speaker 4: will sound terrible, But I've always thought, and I don't
- 21:02Speaker 4: mean this across the board everybody, but usually it is
- 21:09Speaker 4: very difficult, you know. And there was a gentleman who's
- 21:11Speaker 4: passed away, Michael Linn who was was the guy that
- 21:15Speaker 4: you had to go see your contract to get your
- 21:17Speaker 4: contract through.
- 21:19Speaker 2: And one of the things that.
- 21:22Speaker 4: He he would do would he he would low ball
- 21:26Speaker 4: you any any chance he thought he could he could,
- 21:31Speaker 4: he he would load ball you to the best of
- 21:33Speaker 4: his ability, and he would end his conversation when he
- 21:38Speaker 4: decided like, Okay, if it's one hundred thousand dollars, that's it.
- 21:42Speaker 4: That's his top level. He would tell a black player
- 21:46Speaker 4: to go drive a bus, Go drive a cab. If
- 21:50Speaker 4: you don't want this, go drive a cab.
- 21:51Speaker 2: Wow.
- 21:53Speaker 4: And you you're sitting there and you're looking at this dude, like,
- 21:56Speaker 4: what are you saying?
- 21:57Speaker 2: What are you saying to me?
- 21:59Speaker 4: What is what makes you think that I can't go
- 22:01Speaker 4: do something other than just this.
- 22:03Speaker 6: You guys didn't have a player's association of any come
- 22:06Speaker 6: back then or digit.
- 22:07Speaker 2: It just it just started and it just started. But
- 22:10Speaker 2: you couldn't There was no there was no fight, Yeah
- 22:13Speaker 2: there was. There was really no There was no way.
- 22:15Speaker 4: You didn't have an understanding of what the power was
- 22:19Speaker 4: to fight them in these kinds of situation. Like I said,
- 22:24Speaker 4: speaking of power, I mean even if you like looking
- 22:26Speaker 4: I'm looking at an article on the New York Post.
- 22:30Speaker 4: They the arbitrator found that there was no collusion amongst
- 22:33Speaker 4: the owners, but by Lisha mentioned this by clear propondance
- 22:37Speaker 4: of the evidence that Commissioner Roger Goodell and Lee's General
- 22:41Speaker 4: Kowen encouraged teams to restrict players guaranteed contract.
- 22:45Speaker 2: So for me, see how they do the worst salad,
- 22:48Speaker 2: the worst seal.
- 22:49Speaker 4: It's like, Okay, the owners didn't, but are the boss,
- 22:52Speaker 4: the GM of the league did it. So I'm saying
- 22:55Speaker 4: to me, I don't know how that's not collusion. It
- 22:58Speaker 4: may not be collusion amongst the owners, but it's collusion
- 23:02Speaker 4: amongst the league and the owners. Yeah, why is the league?
- 23:07Speaker 4: Why is the league worried about what the vikings are paying?
- 23:10Speaker 4: Because because I think because he's between to the owners, yes,
- 23:15Speaker 4: and and and somebody some of the owners are they
- 23:19Speaker 4: they're definitely talking about, Look, we got to stop these numbers.
- 23:22Speaker 4: We can't get we can't let these numbers keep growing
- 23:25Speaker 4: because it's gonna it's gonna hit our pocket. And then
- 23:28Speaker 4: why they don't want to lose the kind of money
- 23:32Speaker 4: that they're making you. So, so now what what I'm
- 23:35Speaker 4: going to do is, let's let's get rid of the
- 23:38Speaker 4: guaranteed contracts because then because okay, so when you get
- 23:43Speaker 4: rid of the guaranteed contracts, who do you think is
- 23:45Speaker 4: gonna be the first guy you cut as soon as
- 23:47Speaker 4: he becomes less than what you need.
- 23:50Speaker 2: Or guarantee, he's the first guy. He's the first guy gone.
- 23:52Speaker 4: And and like I said, like I think, like you know,
- 23:55Speaker 4: into our conversation earlier, specifically about the w n b A,
- 23:59Speaker 4: and we we we talk about those numbers. But even
- 24:02Speaker 4: from a situation like this, you really never know what's
- 24:05Speaker 4: going on behind the scenes, right because to your point,
- 24:09Speaker 4: the owners, in the league officials specifically in the w
- 24:12Speaker 4: n b A, they could be saying one thing, like
- 24:14Speaker 4: all these are the numbers, but they could be messing
- 24:17Speaker 4: and flipping and changing. You know what I'm saying, We
- 24:19Speaker 4: don't know what's going on a situation like this where
- 24:21Speaker 4: you have the League of Leagues, right, the NFL is
- 24:25Speaker 4: the League of Leagues is number one, right, and you
- 24:27Speaker 4: have the g M, the president of that league, the
- 24:31Speaker 4: commissioner of the league, Roger Goodell, colluding owners, yeah, basically
- 24:37Speaker 4: telling the owners, trying to dictate salaries of organization type.
- 24:42Speaker 5: Of punishment, and the arbitrate, I don't know, but to me, to.
- 24:49Speaker 4: Me the players because the fact of the matters, this
- 24:52Speaker 4: information was withheld from the players. So how how does
- 24:56Speaker 4: that work? Well, you would like to think that you
- 24:59Speaker 4: would like the thing that the NFL. It's coaches can't
- 25:07Speaker 4: say ownership because that is the NFL, but the coaches,
- 25:13Speaker 4: general managers of the teams, those folks should be out
- 25:17Speaker 4: there saying you should not be interrupting, You shouldn't even
- 25:21Speaker 4: be bothered with who and what I pay this.
- 25:27Speaker 2: They're part of that.
- 25:28Speaker 4: So then if you if you erase them, you got
- 25:31Speaker 4: all you got is PLoP players.
- 25:33Speaker 2: Who are the players going to go to? Who are
- 25:35Speaker 2: they gonna report?
- 25:36Speaker 4: You have an NFL p A And from the looks
- 25:39Speaker 4: of it to the president of the NFL PA was
- 25:43Speaker 4: recently fired for doing something, you know, you know, spending
- 25:47Speaker 4: money he shouldn't have been spending and he and he
- 25:50Speaker 4: looks to be in cahoots with Goodell and league ownership
- 25:53Speaker 4: and different things of that nature. So if I guess
- 25:56Speaker 4: what I'm saying, if I'm a player, particularly if I'm
- 25:59Speaker 4: a prompt minute player, and I'm on the precipice of
- 26:03Speaker 4: possibly getting one of those guaranteed contracts. I'm really looking
- 26:07Speaker 4: hard at the NFLPA and be like, look, guys, this
- 26:10Speaker 4: is crazy because obviously it doesn't appear that and again
- 26:13Speaker 4: we're talking about a bunch of millionaires one hundred thousand
- 26:15Speaker 4: AARs whatever. Yeah, but it doesn't appear like the players
- 26:18Speaker 4: at any level have any adequate representation within that organization.
- 26:22Speaker 6: That's exactly what I just was going to bring up,
- 26:24Speaker 6: Hollus is you know, you look at this whole situation
- 26:27Speaker 6: and you see that the upper level management is influencing
- 26:31Speaker 6: team behaviors from their owners, and you know it doesn't
- 26:35Speaker 6: constitute direct collusion, but but what does that do to
- 26:39Speaker 6: their players association? Does that like diminish their their role,
- 26:43Speaker 6: their power? I mean, it seems like they're kind of saying,
- 26:45Speaker 6: we don't care. You can file these grievances, but we're
- 26:48Speaker 6: going to say, yeah, that happened, but what do you
- 26:49Speaker 6: want us to do about it?
- 26:50Speaker 4: And then the players Association made an agreement right ownership
- 26:54Speaker 4: not to release the documents to the players like it.
- 26:58Speaker 4: To me, it hurts the the quality of the league,
- 27:01Speaker 4: and it really this is a stain.
- 27:03Speaker 2: Ain't nobody talking about it? Well?
- 27:05Speaker 4: And I think too I think, and I don't know
- 27:08Speaker 4: this as a fact, but this is what I think
- 27:11Speaker 4: when when the player, when a player gets into a
- 27:14Speaker 4: position that has some kind of say, has some kind
- 27:18Speaker 4: of opportunity to fix something, or learns that there's something
- 27:22Speaker 4: really bad happening, I feel like sometimes they're they're caught
- 27:28Speaker 4: in that situation because they don't want to lose that
- 27:32Speaker 4: position because they could always go up another notch, they
- 27:35Speaker 4: could always get to something else. And once you get
- 27:38Speaker 4: out of the league, now you're into the quote the
- 27:41Speaker 4: administrative piece of it. You love it, you know, you
- 27:45Speaker 4: get caught up in it, and now you feel like
- 27:47Speaker 4: you're somewhat the boss.
- 27:48Speaker 2: And I think some of.
- 27:49Speaker 4: These guys let us down because they're stuck in their
- 27:54Speaker 4: own excitement and this new place. But I would again,
- 27:59Speaker 4: I would have to go back to the players. And
- 28:01Speaker 4: I'm saying, if you're an executive and in particularly in
- 28:04Speaker 4: the NFL p A, and you're supposed to be representing
- 28:08Speaker 4: me and then you're doing stuff like this, you fouling up.
- 28:11Speaker 2: You fouled.
- 28:12Speaker 4: I think the former headed of Lloyd Howie, he found
- 28:16Speaker 4: O lord Howe, excuse me, he fouled an appeal six
- 28:19Speaker 4: months after the fact, but really it seems like he
- 28:23Speaker 4: fouled the appeal when this was came out, so he
- 28:26Speaker 4: had like, oh crap, I gotta you know what I'm saying.
- 28:29Speaker 4: So it's like, if I'm at a player level, you're
- 28:32Speaker 4: not representing me, Like I have no representation within this.
- 28:39Speaker 4: I don't think I don't think players have, you know,
- 28:43Speaker 4: and all these little organizations that quote we we create
- 28:46Speaker 4: and all this kind of stuff, they don't really have
- 28:49Speaker 4: any they don't really have any power, or they're not
- 28:52Speaker 4: exercising the power of exercising, so they're not putting.
- 28:57Speaker 2: They're not putting there with the.
- 29:01Speaker 5: Commissioner and you know.
- 29:02Speaker 4: Yeah, it would seem like somebody on the player side
- 29:05Speaker 4: would be screaming to the to the heapens about this.
- 29:08Speaker 4: It would seem like somebody would just be like, hey man,
- 29:11Speaker 4: this is crazy that this is that this happened. It
- 29:13Speaker 4: seemed like you would have some sort of intellectual person
- 29:17Speaker 4: on this side to say, hey, to review this stuff
- 29:20Speaker 4: and to really you know, because this something like this,
- 29:23Speaker 4: if this would come out like on.
- 29:25Speaker 2: The NBA side, oh oh yeah about it for three months,
- 29:29Speaker 2: that's what's wild.
- 29:30Speaker 6: You haven't seen hard anything on ESPN or any of these.
- 29:34Speaker 6: You know that the talk shows that they have not
- 29:36Speaker 6: they barely touch it.
- 29:37Speaker 4: Like the NBA and and and professional baseball. Oh they would,
- 29:42Speaker 4: they would kill this. They control, they dominate their their organization.
- 29:47Speaker 4: They're gonna get what they want. They're gonna they're gonna
- 29:51Speaker 4: go out and they're.
- 29:51Speaker 5: Gonna follow out the mighty dollars and football.
- 29:55Speaker 4: It's it's hard to get guys, it's hard to get
- 29:58Speaker 4: everybody on the same page to fight for the same cause.
- 30:01Speaker 4: Because of the money, well I would I wouldn't say
- 30:03Speaker 4: the money. I would say because of the careers are
- 30:05Speaker 4: so short. Like you if you look at like you know,
- 30:08Speaker 4: NFL careers, like but three years and you're just outside
- 30:12Speaker 4: of the NFL, it's really nowhere to go to make money.
- 30:16Speaker 4: Like you're not going to make because if you're a
- 30:17Speaker 4: professional football player, if you're not playing in the NFL,
- 30:21Speaker 4: there's literally other than maybe Canada, we know those spots
- 30:24Speaker 4: are limited. Then even in Canada, you're not making money,
- 30:27Speaker 4: whereas opposed, if you're a professional basketball player, the world
- 30:30Speaker 4: is your oyster. Essentially, Michael Beasley, he's out of the
- 30:34Speaker 4: league and he's doing these one on ones making a
- 30:36Speaker 4: couple hundred thousand dollars just playing playground basketball. Essentially, we
- 30:41Speaker 4: just had the TVT here, so I think that's part
- 30:44Speaker 4: of the issue. But I but I still think I
- 30:46Speaker 4: can't believe not one player is talking about this.
- 30:50Speaker 6: I just think the bottom line here is just, you know,
- 30:52Speaker 6: there's no accountability of their leadership. I mean, there's the
- 30:55Speaker 6: transparency's not there. It's it's I just don't know how
- 30:59Speaker 6: they kept it under wrap for as long as they
- 31:00Speaker 6: did with so many parties involved, well.
- 31:03Speaker 4: And and basically still keeping it right because it's out
- 31:07Speaker 4: there a little bit, but it ain't talk really there's
- 31:10Speaker 4: like you, like you said earlier, there's no paperwork, there's
- 31:13Speaker 4: no you don't know who's who said this, who did that,
- 31:17Speaker 4: there's none of that, and who knows if and when? Well, well,
- 31:22Speaker 4: there there is a sixty one page document that I
- 31:24Speaker 4: think it's you can review. But but other than that,
- 31:28Speaker 4: it's just I just can't believe players.
- 31:30Speaker 5: It's not a news story, that's what we're saying, and
- 31:32Speaker 5: it should be. It should be out there.
- 31:35Speaker 2: You should you should see it on it work.
- 31:37Speaker 6: I mean, I'm sure that document you're talking about, Holl's
- 31:40Speaker 6: got a lot of lead in it, and people aren't
- 31:42Speaker 6: going to take time to believe that because it's hard
- 31:44Speaker 6: to understand six yeah, yeah, yeah exactly, So they need
- 31:47Speaker 6: like a layman's kind of version of it that presented
- 31:50Speaker 6: in talk.
- 31:51Speaker 3: With Carl LEAs right, let's talk. I'm not saying, attorney
- 31:54Speaker 3: Frank Robert, this would be my results. And Frank Walker cried.
- 32:02Speaker 4: Or outraised about this because this was attack on how
- 32:06Speaker 4: much money they can make, right, so we're talking about money.
- 32:10Speaker 4: This was just saying, hey, we're gonna we're gonna try
- 32:12Speaker 4: to cap and limit it how much money you can make,
- 32:15Speaker 4: which is I don't know.
- 32:16Speaker 6: I think I think do you think they're aware of it?
- 32:19Speaker 6: I mean they're aware of it. I mean the players
- 32:21Speaker 6: like the I don't.
- 32:22Speaker 2: Aware of it. Yeah, I think that they have to
- 32:26Speaker 2: be aware of it. I mean I don't know.
- 32:29Speaker 6: I mean, they did a really good job of keeping
- 32:31Speaker 6: it out of the public eye for as long as
- 32:33Speaker 6: they did.
- 32:33Speaker 4: But I'd say, if it's out now, or at least
- 32:36Speaker 4: it's out now, there's some there's some mumbling about it.
- 32:39Speaker 2: Somebody has to be saying something.
- 32:42Speaker 4: Out there that out there, But I think it's gonna
- 32:45Speaker 4: what's gonna what it's gonna take it's it's gonna take
- 32:47Speaker 4: that out outspoken person who's willing to risk whatever that
- 32:53Speaker 4: comes with it, and a lot of guys.
- 32:55Speaker 2: Aren't willing to do that, right, you know. So all right,
- 33:00Speaker 2: so we're gonna take a quick break and we will
- 33:02Speaker 2: be right back.

- 34:14Speaker 3: Welcome to Let's talk with Carl Lee. Let's talk is
- 34:17Speaker 3: probably presented by Attorney Frank Walker, Real talk, real experience,
- 34:21Speaker 3: real results, Frank Walker Law dot com. Let that conversation
- 34:25Speaker 3: begin on let's talk.
- 34:28Speaker 4: All right, ladies and gentlemen, we are back, and uh
- 34:32Speaker 4: we're gonna stay in football. And maybe i'd even say
- 34:36Speaker 4: in some in some crazy stuff. I guess Hollis is
- 34:40Speaker 4: gonna talk a little bit about uh Teddy Bridgewater, Well,
- 34:44Speaker 4: NFL quarterback. I think he just got signed, so he's
- 34:47Speaker 4: not a former anymore. But NFL quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. He
- 34:50Speaker 4: was the head coach of a high school in Miami
- 34:54Speaker 4: that recently last year won a state title. And it
- 34:59Speaker 4: came to a light that he had spent upwards to
- 35:02Speaker 4: about two hundred thousand dollars on the program. And this
- 35:06Speaker 4: included buying meals of making sure players had uber rised
- 35:13Speaker 4: practical them from and you know, buying I think equipment
- 35:16Speaker 4: and other things for the program. The money was spent
- 35:19Speaker 4: on the program or or it was spent to assist
- 35:23Speaker 4: players from what we understand, So it wasn't like individual
- 35:26Speaker 4: players were getting in and benefit or anything like that.
- 35:29Speaker 4: It was nothing elicit going on, because I don't think
- 35:32Speaker 4: the state or the school district actually suspended him. It
- 35:36Speaker 4: was the school administration that that suspended him. And it
- 35:40Speaker 4: just you know, physical therapy was one of those phys
- 35:45Speaker 4: one of the things like that. So I mean, what
- 35:47Speaker 4: do you guys thoughts on it? What is what is
- 35:51Speaker 4: so crazy to me is if that person, if I
- 35:56Speaker 4: could find a coach who's going to do that for
- 35:59Speaker 4: my program, because there's one or two things we're either
- 36:02Speaker 4: not getting funding or we just don't have it. Yeah, okay,
- 36:08Speaker 4: So anything that's medical, usually you would think the school,
- 36:14Speaker 4: high school, there would there would be some kind of
- 36:16Speaker 4: insurance of some sort that they could go to to
- 36:20Speaker 4: to help them, you know, whatever the level. Usually there's
- 36:24Speaker 4: something that you could somewhere you can go. This appear
- 36:29Speaker 4: appears to me like there is no resource for medical
- 36:35Speaker 4: or any of those kinds of things. And if you
- 36:37Speaker 4: end up being the person have to pay then I'm
- 36:40Speaker 4: paying it for you in some form of fashion. That's
- 36:43Speaker 4: that's way different than handing you money money. But but
- 36:49Speaker 4: but do you think because he has that level of
- 36:53Speaker 4: resources that it gives his team unfair advantage over the
- 36:58Speaker 4: other teams in similar situation?
- 36:59Speaker 2: That would be no to me.
- 37:01Speaker 4: No, because I'm gonna say, let's say Lisa, Lisa is
- 37:04Speaker 4: a donor to GW and she gives one hundred thousand dollars.
- 37:11Speaker 4: I'm a donor of South Charleston.
- 37:13Speaker 2: I give fifty.
- 37:14Speaker 4: That's not her fault, that's not that's not South Hill's
- 37:17Speaker 4: fault that she gave a hundred and I only gave fifty.
- 37:20Speaker 4: If you have a person that's donating something, offering something
- 37:25Speaker 4: to you, that's that's that's a benefit.
- 37:27Speaker 2: That can't be that you know.
- 37:29Speaker 4: You can't say, well, he can only give medically, he
- 37:32Speaker 4: can only give ten dollars meals, he can only give
- 37:35Speaker 4: five dollars.
- 37:36Speaker 2: You can't he's feeding kids who are not eating.
- 37:40Speaker 5: Right, Well, go ahead, you want to finish your point.
- 37:44Speaker 2: I was just I just think that that's crazy.
- 37:46Speaker 6: Yeah, And you know, kudos to Teddy because I feel like,
- 37:50Speaker 6: you know, that was a selfless effort that he did
- 37:51Speaker 6: to support his team and community.
- 37:53Speaker 5: Obviously they're under resource community.
- 37:55Speaker 6: It was his alma mater, by the way, he did
- 37:57Speaker 6: go to school there, so but somewhere along the line,
- 38:01Speaker 6: you know, I always got the impression that from from
- 38:04Speaker 6: some of the reels that I watched and some of
- 38:06Speaker 6: the articles I read, that someone reported him for this.
- 38:09Speaker 5: He self reported for whatever.
- 38:12Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I.
- 38:12Speaker 6: Found that out me too, And I even double checked
- 38:16Speaker 6: it because when I read, when I saw the first source,
- 38:17Speaker 6: I was like, Okay, I better double check this to
- 38:19Speaker 6: make sure that this is correct.
- 38:20Speaker 5: And I did. I did the AI and it said yes,
- 38:22Speaker 5: he self reported.
- 38:23Speaker 6: It because obviously, well evidently Florida does have some rules
- 38:28Speaker 6: about this, and they have these rules that prohibit coaches
- 38:34Speaker 6: regardless of the source of funds, you know, to prevent
- 38:38Speaker 6: wealthy programs from gaining unfair advantage. So evidently there are
- 38:41Speaker 6: some rules down there. I don't I don't know what
- 38:43Speaker 6: West Virginia, I don't guess we have any here like that,
- 38:45Speaker 6: you know, similar, But so down there he's self reported.
- 38:48Speaker 6: And now the suspension is they don't know for sure
- 38:52Speaker 6: how long it's going to be. But of course you
- 38:53Speaker 6: said he's on a team now, so probably he wouldn't
- 38:55Speaker 6: be returning anyway.
- 38:57Speaker 4: Well from my from what I honest did, I thought
- 38:59Speaker 4: he was still on a coach I know he got signed.
- 39:03Speaker 4: Did he get signed to Detroit? Again, I know he
- 39:05Speaker 4: got signed to a team. I thought he was coaching. No,
- 39:07Speaker 4: he coaching, but he got signed in the in the playoffs,
- 39:11Speaker 4: so after the season ended, when the NFL playoffs, So
- 39:13Speaker 4: he actually got signed to a team, so he was
- 39:16Speaker 4: he was playing. So again, I don't know if he
- 39:17Speaker 4: was just signing for that short term or he planned
- 39:19Speaker 4: to play this upcoming season.
- 39:22Speaker 5: But it's indefinite anyway. They haven't decided how long the
- 39:24Speaker 5: suspension will be.
- 39:26Speaker 4: So I mean, this is just one of those things
- 39:28Speaker 4: where I mean, procedurally, like you said, if there are
- 39:31Speaker 4: some rules that maybe he didn't like procedural and policy wise,
- 39:35Speaker 4: didn't do some stuff one hundred percent correct, but just
- 39:37Speaker 4: the look of it when you talk to a like
- 39:39Speaker 4: I said, an underfunded program, talk about an under underfunded program.
- 39:44Speaker 4: It's really a selfless act. And it wasn't like he
- 39:47Speaker 4: was like I said.
- 39:48Speaker 5: And he was self reported.
- 39:49Speaker 2: Yeah, he's self reported.
- 39:50Speaker 4: The benefits were like giving kids rides home because if
- 39:54Speaker 4: you have that many kids who need an uber home.
- 39:56Speaker 5: That's a problem.
- 39:57Speaker 2: That's a problem that you got.
- 39:59Speaker 4: Some isshit, right, You're feeding players, you're doing the little
- 40:04Speaker 4: things that you know, because because I always laugh, and
- 40:07Speaker 4: this is kind of a side point, I always laugh
- 40:08Speaker 4: when you know we have these you know, issues around
- 40:12Speaker 4: you know, whatever, race, gender, whatever, and the people always
- 40:15Speaker 4: talk about, well, just just go start your home league.
- 40:17Speaker 4: And what I always tell people, Yeah, do you know
- 40:20Speaker 4: how incredibly expensive it is to start a football team?
- 40:25Speaker 4: Like when you just talk about equipment, when you talk
- 40:27Speaker 4: about trainers, when you talk about coaches, when we talk
- 40:29Speaker 4: about all these things. So even at a high school level,
- 40:32Speaker 4: probably even the two hundred thousand dollars two hundred thousand
- 40:35Speaker 4: that he put in probably wasn't even enough, right, Probably
- 40:38Speaker 4: was it probably just part right, you know, just to
- 40:41Speaker 4: have a competitive Florida football team.
- 40:43Speaker 6: Doesn't this remind you of NIOL at the collegiate level,
- 40:45Speaker 6: like certain things are allowed and other things aren't, and
- 40:48Speaker 6: we refer to it as the wild wild West. So
- 40:51Speaker 6: you know, I think it's kind of like with the
- 40:53Speaker 6: NIL that we've discussed on here before, guys, that there
- 40:56Speaker 6: needs to be a balance between you know, upholding those regulars,
- 41:00Speaker 6: those athletic regulations and supporting student athletes. There's got to
- 41:03Speaker 6: be a balance. You can't just say the rules are
- 41:06Speaker 6: the rules. You know, it's not black and white. Sometimes
- 41:08Speaker 6: sometimes it's gray. And this is a gray area.
- 41:11Speaker 4: I'm gonna, I'm gonna, I'm gonna, I'm gonna jump down
- 41:14Speaker 4: to to youth football, okay, And.
- 41:19Speaker 2: When you get when you get grown men in a
- 41:22Speaker 2: room and.
- 41:25Speaker 4: Or let me let me rephrase it, when when grown
- 41:28Speaker 4: men go to a room by themselves, right and decide
- 41:32Speaker 4: who's gonna play in a Kanall County league, right, whoops,
- 41:37Speaker 4: and they're going, yeah, they're gonna they're gonna figure out
- 41:41Speaker 4: who's gonna play and who's not gonna play. Right. And
- 41:44Speaker 4: so when they when they put these teams out, you know,
- 41:48Speaker 4: and have been part of it, and and currently still
- 41:52Speaker 4: part of not allowed to be playing in the Kanall
- 41:55Speaker 4: Valley at South Charleston our youth football league. We don't
- 41:59Speaker 4: get the opportunity to play in Kannall County because of
- 42:05Speaker 4: individual people, just our normal people who have jobs in
- 42:08Speaker 4: the day that have no right to be able to
- 42:14Speaker 4: not allow our young kids to play football locally. We're
- 42:19Speaker 4: we're driving to Parkersburg every other week.
- 42:21Speaker 6: So what is their benefit, what is their end game
- 42:26Speaker 6: in your opinion, what is their end game.
- 42:28Speaker 2: To win for them to have basically.
- 42:33Speaker 5: At that level, Yes, yes, not about growth developing.
- 42:37Speaker 2: They don't care play.
- 42:39Speaker 4: Some of the parents of our kids can't drive, they
- 42:44Speaker 4: can't get to Parkersburg every other week, they can't get
- 42:47Speaker 4: to Ohio every other week, and or they're not willing
- 42:50Speaker 4: to show up if they've got to go there, they
- 42:54Speaker 4: just assume go somewhere else. And and I and I
- 42:58Speaker 4: and I tie this because you're talking about you're not
- 43:04Speaker 4: you're impacting the kids trying to go after if you're
- 43:09Speaker 4: if your objective is to go after me or a
- 43:12Speaker 4: coach or whatever.
- 43:14Speaker 2: At the end of the.
- 43:14Speaker 4: Day, who are you hurting? You're hurting these kids. You're
- 43:18Speaker 4: you're talking about uber rides to go home. You're talking
- 43:21Speaker 4: about physical therapy to help you get back into the game,
- 43:26Speaker 4: or to help you even play the game.
- 43:28Speaker 2: How are you mad?
- 43:30Speaker 5: It's a sad don't you think it's sad?
- 43:32Speaker 2: How are you like making that an illegal thing?
- 43:36Speaker 4: Are you the only thing I can think of? And
- 43:40Speaker 4: you know, again he's self reported. It does not I don't.
- 43:44Speaker 4: From the reports that we have or our root reviewed,
- 43:47Speaker 4: it doesn't appear that like other teams were reporting him.
- 43:50Speaker 6: No, no, And that's the way I took it self
- 43:53Speaker 6: reported no one else. Now that doesn't mean someone wasn't
- 43:58Speaker 6: calling him saying, hey, you can either do this yourself
- 44:01Speaker 6: or I'm going to turn you in.
- 44:02Speaker 5: You know who knows the box story.
- 44:03Speaker 4: I mean, just to if there was a counter argument.
- 44:07Speaker 4: Similar situated teams who don't have an NFL player coaching
- 44:12Speaker 4: their organizations can't do that. So not to say it's
- 44:16Speaker 4: an unfair advantage per se, but they could argue that
- 44:20Speaker 4: it is because hey, I can't do this. I can't
- 44:23Speaker 4: do this for my So if I come from okay,
- 44:25Speaker 4: so if I'm playing on a youth football team and
- 44:27Speaker 4: I'm playing on the west side, Okay, I'm playing on
- 44:31Speaker 4: the west side.
- 44:31Speaker 2: Well i'm talking about Teddy Bridgewater. I'm not talking about
- 44:33Speaker 2: I know, but I'm just saying.
- 44:34Speaker 4: I'm just saying that if and where your money comes
- 44:38Speaker 4: from often is from people who care.
- 44:42Speaker 2: Yeah, that's true, you know.
- 44:43Speaker 4: And so now you're going to try to determine a
- 44:46Speaker 4: person that's caring all but he's too connected, he's too close.
- 44:53Speaker 4: That's what I'm saying.
- 44:55Speaker 6: There's so many it's a Pandora's box that they opened here.
- 44:58Speaker 6: I mean, you know, will there be regulations everywhere now
- 45:02Speaker 6: for high school you know athletics.
- 45:05Speaker 4: You think will and will it be like, hey, you're
- 45:08Speaker 4: just a rich booster your former alumni.
- 45:10Speaker 2: No, you can't give that's.
- 45:11Speaker 4: Too much, right I mean to me, if you if
- 45:15Speaker 4: you're doing this, if you're doing this, then you should
- 45:20Speaker 4: be able to do this to any individual person who's
- 45:22Speaker 4: given Hollis team money. I can coach, you know, because
- 45:27Speaker 4: I'm again I'm thinking, you know, when I go down,
- 45:31Speaker 4: when I get down the state, if I don't have
- 45:33Speaker 4: sterling sharp funding for equipment and uniforms and all.
- 45:38Speaker 2: Those kind of things, we ain't making it right now.
- 45:43Speaker 4: Can somebody come in and say, well, hey that you
- 45:45Speaker 4: know that that's illegal right there? He's a former player,
- 45:48Speaker 4: their friends, he can't be he can't be giving them
- 45:51Speaker 4: money like that.
- 45:52Speaker 6: Correct me if I'm if I'm wrong. But isn't that
- 45:54Speaker 6: the basis of NIO. Wasn't that what was going on
- 45:56Speaker 6: before they started to try to regulate, was you know,
- 45:59Speaker 6: your big donors would come in and give money to
- 46:01Speaker 6: this this you know, foundation, and then the foundation, would
- 46:04Speaker 6: you know, take the money?
- 46:05Speaker 5: Is that not right home?
- 46:06Speaker 2: That's pretty much what it was. I was going to say,
- 46:09Speaker 2: So if I gave it.
- 46:13Speaker 4: It is it does it? Does it matter where you
- 46:17Speaker 4: use it?
- 46:18Speaker 2: Well?
- 46:18Speaker 4: I think again that's that's a collegiate example. But I
- 46:21Speaker 4: think far as high school sports, particularly in the state
- 46:25Speaker 4: of Florida, it might be some different rules around it.
- 46:27Speaker 4: So it just depends on that particular jurisdiction as to
- 46:31Speaker 4: what the rules are of where money can come from,
- 46:33Speaker 4: because it could be some regulations. But I think all
- 46:36Speaker 4: in all were probably I think we're all in agreement
- 46:38Speaker 4: that I think his heart was in the right place.
- 46:40Speaker 4: I don't think it was anything malicious. I don't think
- 46:42Speaker 4: he was buying players. I don't think he was trying
- 46:45Speaker 4: to entice players from outside of that community to come
- 46:48Speaker 4: to that school. I think, you know, him being alumni
- 46:52Speaker 4: was probably just Hey, I just want to make this
- 46:55Speaker 4: the best I can be. Now, what I would say
- 46:56Speaker 4: is probably what he should have done is the only
- 47:00Speaker 4: thing I can think of. He's probably should have filtered
- 47:02Speaker 4: that money through the booster association if they even had one.
- 47:06Speaker 4: So that's probably because I think probably what ends up
- 47:09Speaker 4: happening is he's just kind of piecemelling this money as
- 47:12Speaker 4: he needs it. That that sort of it creates the
- 47:16Speaker 4: illusion that possibly something you know, could be going on
- 47:21Speaker 4: and it's just not done right to your point when
- 47:24Speaker 4: you start talking about pregame meals that's probably something that
- 47:27Speaker 4: he's worked out, you know, a deal with with with
- 47:31Speaker 4: what somebody who's going to feed him, you know, and
- 47:34Speaker 4: you know how that works.
- 47:36Speaker 2: So can that look shady? Can that look it could? Just?
- 47:41Speaker 4: So I would just say, probably to me, and again
- 47:43Speaker 4: without knowing the details of reading any documents, it's probably
- 47:46Speaker 4: just the way in which he was spending the money.
- 47:49Speaker 4: He was just probably spending has he needed instead of
- 47:52Speaker 4: going through like a quote unquote formal formal process. So
- 47:56Speaker 4: we think that there's a So I'm assuming that you
- 47:59Speaker 4: got are saying that there there is a system that.
- 48:03Speaker 2: He could potentially follow.
- 48:05Speaker 4: I don't think there is, but I think I think again,
- 48:08Speaker 4: I boa that I think normally what happens is any
- 48:14Speaker 4: money it gets spent is filled through through some sort
- 48:16Speaker 4: of booster association. So it's it's filled through through the boosters,
- 48:20Speaker 4: and coaches have some limited access to said funds because
- 48:24Speaker 4: That's how coaches get in trouble when they start to
- 48:25Speaker 4: spend that money.
- 48:28Speaker 2: On things that they shouldn't spend.
- 48:30Speaker 4: Well, I was, I was. I was guilty at State
- 48:33Speaker 4: because I kept that money. I kept that money in
- 48:36Speaker 4: a in a in an account. I didn't put it
- 48:38Speaker 4: in the in the W club or any of that
- 48:41Speaker 4: kind of stuff because I didn't want Because for me,
- 48:43Speaker 4: when I needed to get equipment, when I needed to
- 48:45Speaker 4: buy this, or I needed to buy that, I needed
- 48:47Speaker 4: to get it.
- 48:48Speaker 5: To self report, I'm self reported.
- 48:51Speaker 4: But but like I said, I'm sure it's I mean,
- 48:53Speaker 4: like I said, I'm just guessing that there's some sort
- 48:55Speaker 4: of process.
- 48:56Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 48:57Speaker 4: But all in all, I'll just say I appears he
- 49:00Speaker 4: was just doing the right thing for those kids. So yeah,
- 49:02Speaker 4: my hat's off to him simply for the fact that
- 49:06Speaker 4: he would he would feel that passionate about his team
- 49:11Speaker 4: and the players on that team, and he knew what
- 49:14Speaker 4: the challenges were for each and every one of them,
- 49:17Speaker 4: and he took care of that. He took time out
- 49:21Speaker 4: of his life to take care of those particular kids
- 49:26Speaker 4: and they win a championship. To me, my hat's off
- 49:28Speaker 4: to him in more respect than you can possibly imagine.
- 49:31Speaker 6: For sure, And just to you know, reiterate what we've
- 49:34Speaker 6: talked about, there's a big difference between gifting an xbox
- 49:37Speaker 6: or something to a kid and providing you know, a meal,
- 49:40Speaker 6: a basic necessity of life.
- 49:42Speaker 4: Right, and if something like that would have happened, it
- 49:44Speaker 4: would have definitely been in the article, you know.
- 49:47Speaker 2: So, so I'm pretty sure that we were a we
- 49:51Speaker 2: were a.
- 49:53Speaker 4: I would say we're right on spot on here on
- 49:57Speaker 4: the things that they've listed, at least that that to me,
- 50:01Speaker 4: I think it's every one of those are worthy calls
- 50:04Speaker 4: for a coach, I agree. So all right, well, ladies
- 50:08Speaker 4: and gentlemen, we've had we've had a couple of a
- 50:12Speaker 4: couple of or well, I guess three great topics today
- 50:15Speaker 4: and and we might have even found some common ground,
- 50:20Speaker 4: you know, may there were VI might have agreed on
- 50:24Speaker 4: a few things, you know, because that usually different happens.
- 50:28Speaker 2: But we hope that you come back and check
- 50:30Speaker 4: Us out again next week, and uh, we'll get out
- 50:33Speaker 4: of here and we'll be back
