- 0:00Ezekiel chapter 22, Dear Lord, please be with us as we read
- 0:07through this and open our eyes and ears to hear what you have
- 0:11to say. We ask this in Jesus name.
- 0:15So I'm going to read through this chapter.
- 0:17There's probably not a lot that I have to add to this at all,
- 0:21and I will read through the questions and answers that are
- 0:23in the study guide, and then I'll do a separate podcast to
- 0:28share with you an experience that I had this morning.
- 0:32So let's get started relative to this chapter.
- 0:36So the word of the Lord came to me.
- 0:40Son of man, will you judge her? Will you judge the city of
- 0:44bloodshed? Then confront her with all her
- 0:47detestable practices and say this is what the sovereign Lord
- 0:50says. You city that brings on herself
- 0:55doom by shedding blood in her midst and defiles herself by
- 0:59making idols. You have become guilty because
- 1:02of the blood you have shed and have become defiled by the idols
- 1:08you have made. You have brought your days to a
- 1:11close, and the end of your years has come.
- 1:16Therefore I will make you an object of scorn to the nations
- 1:21and a laughing stock to all the countries.
- 1:23Those who are near and those who are far away will mock you, You
- 1:29infamous city full of turmoil. See how each of the Princess of
- 1:35Israel who are in you uses his power to shed blood in you.
- 1:41They have treated father and mother with contempt.
- 1:44In you they have oppressed the foreigner and mistreated the
- 1:48fatherless and the widow. You have despised my holy things
- 1:53and desecrated my Sabbaths. In you are slanderers who are
- 1:58bent on shedding blood. In you are those who eat at the
- 2:02mountain shrines and commit lewd acts.
- 2:06In you are those who dishonor their father's bed.
- 2:10In you are those who violate women during their period when
- 2:13they are ceremonially unclean. In You, one man commits A
- 2:18detestable offense with his neighbor's wife, another
- 2:22shamefully defiles his daughter-in-law, and another
- 2:25violates his sister, his own father's daughter.
- 2:30In you are people who accept bribes to shed blood.
- 2:35You take interest and make a profit from the poor.
- 2:38You extort unjust gain from your neighbors.
- 2:42And you have forgotten me, declares the sovereign Lord.
- 2:45I will surely strike my hands together at the unjust gain you
- 2:50have made, at the blood you have shed in your midst.
- 2:55Will your courage endure, or your hands be strong in the day
- 3:01I deal with you? I, the Lord, have spoken, and I
- 3:05will do it. I will disperse you among the
- 3:07nations and scatter you through the countries.
- 3:10I will put an end to your uncleanness.
- 3:13When you have been defiled in the eyes of the nations, you
- 3:18will know that I am the Lord. Then the word of the Lord came
- 3:21to me. Son of Man, the people of Israel
- 3:24have become dross to me. All of them are copper, tin,
- 3:29iron, and lead left inside a furnace.
- 3:34They are but the dross of silver.
- 3:37Therefore, this is what the Sovereign Lord says.
- 3:40Because you have all become dross, I will gather you into
- 3:46Jerusalem as silver, copper, iron, lead, and tin are gathered
- 3:52into a furnace to be melted with a fiery blast.
- 3:57So I will gather you in my anger and my wrath and put you inside
- 4:04the city and melt you. I will gather you, and I will
- 4:08blow on you with my fiery wrath, and you will be melted inside
- 4:14her. As silver is melted in a
- 4:17furnace, so you will be melted inside her, and you will know
- 4:22that I, the Lord, have poured out my wrath on you.
- 4:27Again the word of the Lord came to me.
- 4:30Son of Man, say to the land, You are a land that has not been
- 4:34cleansed or rained on in the day of wrath.
- 4:38There is a conspiracy of her Princess within her, like a
- 4:42roaring lion tearing its prey. They devour people, take
- 4:47treasures and precious things, and make many wind widows within
- 4:52her. Her priests do violence to my
- 4:55law, and profane my holy things. They do not distinguish between
- 5:00the holy and the common. They teach that there is no
- 5:03difference between the unclean and the clean, and they shut
- 5:08their eyes to the keeping of my Sabbaths, so that I am profaned
- 5:13among them. Her officials within her are
- 5:16like wolves tearing their prey. They shed blood and kill people
- 5:21to make unjust gain. Her prophets whitewash these
- 5:26deeds for them by false visions and lying divinations.
- 5:31They say this is what the sovereign Lord says.
- 5:35When the Lord has not spoken, the people of the land practice
- 5:39extortion and commit robbery. They oppress the poor and needy
- 5:44and mistreat the foreigner, denying them justice.
- 5:47I looked for someone among them who would build up the wall and
- 5:52stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land so I would
- 5:57not have to destroy it. But I have found no one, so I
- 6:02will pour out my wrath on them and consume them with my fiery
- 6:07anger, bringing down on their own heads all they have done,
- 6:12declares the Sovereign Lord. So there's, I guess the only
- 6:17thing was the last part of it that he said was that bringing
- 6:21down on their own heads all they have done, I think about sowing
- 6:25and reaping like what we sow, we will reap.
- 6:30So that's important in the way that we live.
- 6:34And that's somewhat of a warning from God, a caution.
- 6:38I mean, he doesn't want to see us perish.
- 6:42He doesn't want to bring wrath on us.
- 6:44He's given Israel many times to repent, but they refused it.
- 6:51And that's kind of the sequence of events when people are
- 6:56unrepentant, then will come to God's judgment.
- 7:01And God's judgment, is it intended for them to wake up and
- 7:05turn back to God? It God's, you know, in other
- 7:09places in the Bible, it says he takes, no, he does not enjoy
- 7:15this at all. He is not a wrathful God.
- 7:18He is a loving God. However, he is holy and, and he
- 7:24needs to and he's righteous and he needs to deal with this
- 7:27because of His Holiness, because of his righteousness, because of
- 7:31justice, he has to deal with these things that happen.
- 7:36So I'll go through the questions and answers, and then we'll wrap
- 7:39up. So why would Jerusalem become a
- 7:43laughingstock among other sinful nations?
- 7:46This verse refers to Israel's boast that because God has
- 7:50chosen them, they would never meet the fate of other nations.
- 7:54Now, because of their sinfulness and rebellion, they were just
- 8:00like other nations, a target of scorn and derision for their
- 8:04misguided faithfulness. Again, we can see here, this is
- 8:08another sowing and reaping. It says because of their
- 8:12sinfulness and rebellion, God's not protecting them anymore.
- 8:17And he gave him a warning ahead of time.
- 8:19He didn't just, you know, say, oh, you know, maybe they'll find
- 8:22out that I'm not with them. No, he said, I am not going to
- 8:27help you in this, that my wrath is going to come on you.
- 8:31So if people were listening to Ezekiel, then they would have
- 8:37repented because they would have hoped that maybe they can get
- 8:41right with God, repair the relationship with God, and
- 8:45therefore not have to experience the wrath, which God does say
- 8:52that when we turn to him and he, he says the sins, I will
- 8:57remember no more. Now it can't just be a a
- 9:01manipulative thing that we do that we turn to him just so that
- 9:06we don't have something bad happen to us where that's really
- 9:09selfish. But when we go to God and we
- 9:13truly want to repair that relationship with him, we don't
- 9:17want to be considered his enemy. We want to figure out what it is
- 9:22we need to do in our life to repair the relationship.
- 9:26Then God says, you know, if it's true repentance, God says he
- 9:31remembers our sins no more. And that's a beautiful thing for
- 9:34all of us because every single person is a Sinner.
- 9:38Jesus said there is no one good but God.
- 9:42So that means every single person, unless you're God, which
- 9:45you're not, then you have sin, and people who claim to not have
- 9:50sin are liars. So that means every single one
- 9:54of us has sinned to deal with. But when we turn to God and part
- 10:01of it is receiving the Holy Spirit being born again, which
- 10:05is what I will talk about in the next podcast about a personal
- 10:09experience that I had today. So, and it's relative to chapter
- 10:1422. OK, moving on to the questions
- 10:17and answers. Who ate at the mountain shrines?
- 10:20The Canaanites worshipped at sanctuaries built atop hills and
- 10:24mountains. Animals would be sacrificed to
- 10:27idols there and the worshippers would then eat the meat of the
- 10:31offerings. Some unfaithful Israelites
- 10:35joined in this worship. How was Israel like Dross?
- 10:42Using fire, the undesirable metals that corrupt silver are
- 10:47separated from the silver into a filthy liquid called dross,
- 10:54which hardens when it cools. Figuratively, Jerusalem would
- 10:59become God's furnace, and the people would be the dross that
- 11:04would remain after the purifying of God's wrath.
- 11:09A small worthless element would be left when Israel was
- 11:14destroyed. What was this conspiracy of her
- 11:18Princess? The Princess of Israel had
- 11:21plotted to enrich themselves in their own kin at the expense of
- 11:26people who could least afford it.
- 11:29This corruption was just one reason why God was ready to
- 11:33destroy Israel. When Princess turn against their
- 11:37own people and loot their own heritage, the nation is beyond
- 11:42redemption. Wow, just as I read that, I just
- 11:47had the thought of Iran come to mind and what is happening
- 11:52there. The leadership of Iran has
- 11:56turned against their people and are slaughtering their own
- 11:59people, the people who were resisting the leadership.
- 12:04And this question and answer just says the nation is beyond
- 12:10redemption. It seems to me that there's
- 12:14going to come something serious to Iran or to Iran's leadership
- 12:20considering the way God operates.
- 12:22Now I know a lot of there are some people there are, I
- 12:26understand there are underground churches in Iran and we should
- 12:30all pray for those, pray for all the Iranians that their eyes be
- 12:34opened and that they come to know Jesus.
- 12:38Especially what I've heard and again, I mentioned this in the
- 12:42prior podcast. I don't know what to believe
- 12:44anymore because AI is so good and it's hard to distinguish
- 12:51real from fake unless I guess you have equipment and can see
- 12:56if a video has been done that, but I don't have that equipment.
- 13:02So anyway, there are reports and the Internet has been cut off
- 13:07but somehow information is getting out.
- 13:11So I don't quite understand that part.
- 13:13So that makes me speculate that there could be some manipulation
- 13:19in the information that's coming from there.
- 13:22But, and it does seem like an extreme number, but I don't know
- 13:28what it is. There are people who are
- 13:31protesting that the government in Iran was saying they were
- 13:35going to execute these people. And I've heard numbers as high
- 13:39as 80,000 people who have been killed because they were
- 13:44protesters. And I've seen videos that show
- 13:48those things and people in body bags.
- 13:50And I honestly don't know if they are real or not, but if
- 13:57they are real, then the people of Iran desperately need our
- 14:02prayers. God says the prayers of the
- 14:06righteous. The Bible says the prayers of
- 14:09the righteous are powerful. So if we can pray that people's
- 14:14eyes will be opened and they will come to know Jesus and
- 14:20accept Jesus as their Lord, repent of their sins and the
- 14:28Holy Spirit, you know that God sent His Holy Spirit into their
- 14:32lives and even if they lose their lives, that they will gain
- 14:36eternity. We pray for them right now.
- 14:39That's what I'm praying for, so I'll continue in the questions
- 14:43and answers. How did the priest fail to
- 14:46distinguish between the holy and the common?
- 14:49The priests who were supposed to instruct the people concerning
- 14:52ritual holiness no longer took their duties seriously.
- 14:56The Mosaic Law clearly spelled out the guidelines for Israel's
- 15:01formal worship and religious practices.
- 15:04The text does not specifically identify the reasons for their
- 15:07neglect, but the context suggests it was more convenient
- 15:12and that economically profitable for them to blur the
- 15:16distinctions. That's why I guess we need to
- 15:21abide by God's word and not, you know, I guess when you're doing
- 15:26something because it is more convenient or economically
- 15:32profitable. Economically profitable would
- 15:35mean you have money as your idol.
- 15:37You have an idolatry of money. So for all of us, we need to
- 15:42reflect on our own lives and see how do we use the tools that God
- 15:46gave us. Money is a tool that God gave
- 15:49us. So what are we doing with it?
- 15:51Are we being selfish with it? Are we benefiting others with
- 15:54it? So then there's another question
- 15:58and answer. Why did God need someone to
- 16:02quote stand in the gap? This was a military image.
- 16:06If there was a breach in the city wall, then the city was
- 16:10vulnerable at that place. Here God was looking for someone
- 16:14to stand in that breach and defend the city.
- 16:17Most likely, the imagery had to do with someone standing in the
- 16:21breach of Israel's injustice and unrighteousness.
- 16:25Who would stand in the gap created by Israel's covenant
- 16:29infidelity? The answer?
- 16:32No one. That also brings something to
- 16:35mind, and it's about how do we respond when we see things?
- 16:39Do we speak up for other people or do we turn our heads?
- 16:44That's something that that can affect us every day in life,
- 16:47just in our day-to-day life. How do we respond to those
- 16:50things with with God's laws in mind, with the way God wants us
- 16:55to be? Are we standing up for others or
- 16:58are we turning our heads and ignoring something where we
- 17:03could have spoken up because God is looking for that as well.
- 17:08It's how do we treat others? I mean, that's really being
- 17:10loving to others. When we stand up for others and
- 17:13we're not so concerned about protecting our own reputation,
- 17:17our own life, and we will stand up for someone who is unjustly
- 17:23being persecuted in some way. Just something to think about.
- 17:28And this wraps up chapter 22. I did read Amir's book, the
- 17:36Exploring Ezekiel book by Amir Sarfati, and I'm going to
- 17:41include that in the next episode because this has this relates to
- 17:47my personal experience last night, this morning.
- 17:50So the next podcast will cover that.
