- 3:25Let's talk about today's guest. Now, as we continue celebrating
- 3:30National Hispanic Heritage Months, I want to highlight
- 3:33something that means a lot to me.
- 3:36Our Latino community has always been about service, resilience,
- 3:41leadership and making an impact. And today's guest is a perfect
- 3:44example of that. Someone who has taken his
- 3:47culture. His experience and his passion
- 3:49for serving others and turned it into a mission to help people
- 3:53become better leaders. Today I have the honor of
- 3:56welcoming Joy Allavez to the motivating mindset.
- 3:59Joey is a proud son of Puerto Rico and his journey is a
- 4:02powerful reminder that leadership is not about a title.
- 4:06It's about purpose, connection and bringing out the best in
- 4:09others. Joey is a leadership architect
- 4:12me and they dedicated to helping leaders and organizations
- 4:16activate the human capabilities that drive culture, performance
- 4:20and meaningful impact. His belief is simple.
- 4:23We're powerful. That the future of leadership is
- 4:26not just about strategy and not just about technology.
- 4:29It's about clarity. It's about connection.
- 4:31It's about having a hit courage to make the right decisions
- 4:35while staying connected to the people you lead.
- 4:37Joey's leadership journey is incredible.
- 4:40He serves as a He served as a Deputy Director of the Elite
- 4:44Executive Leadership Program within the United States
- 4:46Department of Defense, where he prepared senior leaders to
- 4:51operate in uncertainty, conflict and complex global environments.
- 4:56He later served as Director of Recruitment and Retention at
- 4:59Department of the Interior Ayulando, helping strengthen the
- 5:02workforce system and developed across federal organizations.
- 5:07And Joey made the history as the first civilian chief of
- 5:10Diversity and Inclusion for the United States Coast Guard.
- 5:14Think about that full momento piensade.
- 5:16So not just a position, that's a responsibility.
- 5:19A responsibility to influence me and they people strength teams
- 5:23and create environments where everyone has the opportunity to
- 5:27succeed me. And that Joey is also the
- 5:29creator of the Alive Leadership Method, a framework built around
- 5:34awareness, belonging, well-being, productive conflict
- 5:38and elevation, helping leaders turn human potential.
- 5:42As a TEDx speaker, author of Choose to Live, a LinkedIn top
- 5:47voice, and recognized as an inclusion innovator by Schrem,
- 5:51his work has impacted leaders and organizations around the
- 5:54world, including Fortune 500 companies, government agencies,
- 5:58university and global institution.
- 6:01But beyond titles, the awards. And the what stands up for me
- 6:05is. Joey's commitment to people, we
- 6:08gente because the heart of leadership is not about
- 6:12position, it's about responsibility.
- 6:14It's about serving others. It's about leaving people who
- 6:16may hold better than you found them.
- 6:19Brother, we want to welcome you to The Motivating Mindset and
- 6:22I'm honored to have you here, especially during Hispanic
- 6:24Heritage Month. I'm excited for our audience to
- 6:27hear your story, your wisdom, your perspective on what it
- 6:31truly means to lead with purpose.
- 6:33So let's welcome him. The interview of the week is
- 6:40brought to you by Jersey Mike's. A sub above.
- 6:46Joey, Joey, my man. Welcome, my brother, Welcome.
- 6:49Welcome, hello, hello from the beautiful island of Puerto Rico,
- 6:55Jose and everybody watching us from across the world.
- 7:00It is such a pleasure and an honor to be in your presence.
- 7:06MI hermano. Happy to be here and I cannot
- 7:10wait to I have an insightful conversation that inspires
- 7:16everybody and I just love all the flavor.
- 7:20All the sass song is so Frito that you bring to this
- 7:25conversation, my friend. Thank you.
- 7:28Gracie, I know. Thank you.
- 7:29It's an honor having. It's just what that is so
- 7:31beautiful, that background. Oh my God, that is that is
- 7:34stupendous. It is real.
- 7:36So it is real. I am in a Guadilla, Puerto Rico.
- 7:41We have a beautiful Co working space here by friends of Puerto
- 7:45Rico and I always love to do my podcast appearances from this
- 7:51here. This is the third floor location
- 7:54and it's always good. So bringing you all warm and
- 7:58some love from the island of Puerto Rico.
- 8:01So Joey, let's start with who Joey is before he started with
- 8:05the working for the government and so on.
- 8:07What where you're from? Tell us about who.
- 8:09Joey is, you know, I'll say that question is so powerful because
- 8:16in every stage of life there are new nuances.
- 8:23And as I become wiser, I by now, probably in September, I turned
- 8:2940. OK, so I turned 40 and I before
- 8:33I am a speaker, an advisor, a consultant and author.
- 8:39I am a husband in love. I am a father of Teddy and
- 8:45Amelia. I am a man of faith and of
- 8:49course a proud Puerto Rican who who came to to build a life that
- 8:56feel feels as a meaningful as the work that I do so that that
- 9:02comes first. Now what is it that I do in a
- 9:05daily basis? I help leaders navigate the
- 9:11human messiness, living through it, not shine away from it, not
- 9:18running away from it, but leading through it.
- 9:21And we, we help highly capable leaders become undeniable in
- 9:29their contribution. Irreplaceable in their humanity
- 9:34and unshakable in the moments that has them the most.
- 9:39That's my focus. That's what I live for.
- 9:42And I cannot wait to to share more with you my.
- 9:46Friend, so we already have a question, Maria from New York
- 9:49says. When you think about your
- 9:51heritage, what part of it has shaped the leader you are today?
- 9:57You know, resilience is in the DNA of all Puerto Ricans.
- 10:06And when I think about our culture, when I think about the
- 10:11trials that we have had to face for decades, I'm not talking
- 10:17just this year or last year, but for decades and decades.
- 10:22Resilience comes at the top of what makes us US.
- 10:28And when I think about now that I'm living in Puerto Rico, I can
- 10:34attest of the challenges and trials that we have to face.
- 10:38So when you see a Puerto Rican or Hispanic, please know that
- 10:45they have to endure a series of challenges to make it to
- 10:51whatever they are. So resilience is what gives us
- 10:57that energy, that flavor, because if you make it, you have
- 11:03to go through a certain certain set of processes and challenges
- 11:09and barriers. So, So when I get to describe
- 11:12what shaped me, who I who I am today, certainly the trials and
- 11:19the barriers I have to face. And you know, Jose, there's so
- 11:23many because when I think about my career, when I think about
- 11:27how I started as an intern in Washington, DC, and then every
- 11:33promotion had a new set of challenges that required that
- 11:39resilience that I obtained growing up in the island.
- 11:46Wow, some Melanie from PR say WEPA, that's so true.
- 11:49Everything you just said and you're right on Melanie.
- 11:52And we have a question from Ida, NPR.
- 11:54She said Hola, this year's national theme for Hispanic
- 11:58Heritage Month is together we are more that speaks to unity.
- 12:04What moments in your life showed you the power of community?
- 12:09You know, when I I love that title.
- 12:11So Ida, thank you. Thank you so much for that.
- 12:13And I, I must go deeper here because when we say together, we
- 12:19are more, I want to know what more means and and I would love
- 12:25to create kind of a framework here in life with you all.
- 12:31And for me, more means kind of undeniable.
- 12:36And when I say undeniable, Jose, I'm not talking about being
- 12:40louder or being more impressive. What I mean is when we are
- 12:45undeniable, we are so clear in our contribution, in our
- 12:53judgment that our voice cannot be overlooked.
- 13:00So when we are more, we are undeniable.
- 13:02But that's not all. I want everybody on this call,
- 13:06whether you are retired or you are an intern or you are growing
- 13:12in your career, yes, embrace that undeniably.
- 13:17But then also I want you to think about becoming
- 13:21irreplaceable. And I know that in our culture,
- 13:25we are, we have been taught, Joey, we are all irreplaceable.
- 13:29And I understand that we know that we all can be replaced.
- 13:34That's the reality of Business Today.
- 13:36Like I said, think about all the filings that we are seeing.
- 13:42But I'm talking about that we can become irreplaceable because
- 13:47our trust, our discernment, our courage, our present, and the
- 13:52way we elevate each other cannot be automated, cannot be easily
- 14:00replicated. So when I say being more means
- 14:06being irreplaceable is I want that your trust that your
- 14:11discernment, that your courage, that your present that the way
- 14:15that you build each other cannot be automated or easily replaced
- 14:21by that matter by AI or by anybody else.
- 14:25And I have 1/3 descriptor say, if I may, you know, be more
- 14:31means being undeniable, being irreplaceable.
- 14:36But then I also, I believe we need to add a third leg and that
- 14:40is unshakable. I'm not talking about living
- 14:44emotions outside of the conversation or to show up
- 14:49unaffected. I'm talking about blinded,
- 14:52grounded enough to remain clear, present and useful when
- 15:00uncertainty, conflict, pressure and that human messiness, yes,
- 15:07enters the room. And I believe that is what the
- 15:12new leadership is calling for. All of us, you know, we must be
- 15:18unshakable, irreplaceable and undeniable in the face of all
- 15:24the trials that we are in doing right now.
- 15:28That is, that is absolutely correct.
- 15:30I can relate to that, you know, being indispensable.
- 15:34Yes. We have a question from Larry
- 15:36from Minnesota and he says has someone proudly rooted in Puerto
- 15:40Rico who has influenced leadership nationally.
- 15:44For you, how has your culture heritage shaped the way you lead
- 15:49and connect with people? You know, culture is at the
- 15:55center of everything that we do, of everything that we do and
- 16:01love, faith, family, friendships are at the center of every
- 16:11relationship, every style, every approach.
- 16:16So when I think about culture and how it has helped me and
- 16:21propelled me throughout my career, those three come at the
- 16:25center. Family, friends, faith.
- 16:31Those three things are powerful. And I'm sure if we ask our
- 16:35audience, what else would you add?
- 16:37People will keep adding things and flavors and other things.
- 16:43But but I want to go back, Josef, you know, when I travel
- 16:49for the first time from Puerto Rico to Washington, DC for an
- 16:53internship program, you know, at the time it was 2007, the
- 16:57Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, Taco, they had
- 17:01a super famous internship program, highly competitive.
- 17:07I believe they're still around into 2026, which kudos to them.
- 17:13And you know, I got accepted to that internship program.
- 17:16Jose and I traveled there was just one little challenge was
- 17:22not fluent in English. I understood English.
- 17:26I was a 4.0 student, highly competitive and all of that.
- 17:31But then at the at the end of the day, you know, practicing
- 17:34and understanding all the accents and all the flavors was
- 17:39hard and was hard. So you, you got to practice.
- 17:42So I'll never forget I get to go to a fast food restaurant for
- 17:47the first time in Washington, DC.
- 17:49And Jose, I practiced the not before because I wanted to get
- 17:54my order right. So I practiced in my mind, in my
- 17:58mind. So the day had had arrived.
- 18:01I walked in so proud, smiling and exciting and kind of a
- 18:06little bit loud, you know, and I said, may I have some chicken
- 18:12Nuggets? That's what I said and I said it
- 18:14perfectly. I said.
- 18:16And I was mad with the following reaction.
- 18:21Oh, you have such a healthy accent now.
- 18:26If you all know my brain at the time, it was literal.
- 18:31So I heard the word heavy. I thought she called me fat.
- 18:36And I said listen, listen to me. Whatever you hear, don't call it
- 18:45fat. And you know what?
- 18:47I don't have an accent. I don't know what you're talking
- 18:49about. Listen, that was the first time
- 18:54that someone told me and I had an accent and you know, with all
- 18:58the curiosity, I had to go and record myself because I was
- 19:02thinking like, do I have an accent?
- 19:04And good Lord, had an accent and it was a strong one.
- 19:09Some people call it heavy, other people call it sexy.
- 19:13So I will go with sexy any time of the day.
- 19:16But but when I think about culture, I think about the
- 19:21chicken Nuggets moment, because when we walk to every room, we
- 19:28bring our ancestors, we bring our Rs and no, those Rs and that
- 19:36flavor ain't heavy baby is the flavor that we bring to the
- 19:42world. And, and so I want everybody to
- 19:47keep in mind that your culture is not something that you leave
- 19:53behind. Your culture goes with you, and
- 19:57rather that something heavy that slows you down, that makes it
- 20:03harder. Now I see culture as an
- 20:06accelerator if we embrace it enough.
- 20:11Yes, no, absolutely. I, I, I can relate to that.
- 20:15Before I go to the next question, I want to ask you,
- 20:17Joey, Talk to me about your faith, how important that is in
- 20:19your life. That's so important because I'm
- 20:21a Christian too. Can you just listen about your
- 20:24faith? You know, Jose, faith is
- 20:29everything to me. When I think about their hardest
- 20:33moments of my life, they're happier, happiest moments of my
- 20:39life. Faith, God.
- 20:42And that relationship with our Creator comes at the center of
- 20:49it all. And you know, I'll never forget
- 20:53when I call my mom during that first internship that I was just
- 20:59making a joke about, and it was so hard.
- 21:03At some point I'll say that my mom asked me mijo como como tu
- 21:08estas, how are you doing? You know, my mom was concerned
- 21:11her her baby was out of home for the first time.
- 21:16And when she asked me that, I had to say Mommy, Joe, me
- 21:23ciento, invisibly, I felt invisible because people could
- 21:30not understand me. I could not communicate freely
- 21:34or openly. It was hard.
- 21:36It was hard to just being. And I will never forget what she
- 21:41told me. She said you can do all things
- 21:46through Christ. That was #1 And then she said,
- 21:50be strong and be courageous. So at the center of every trial,
- 21:57of every success, faith has been the driver.
- 22:02And I'm so glad that we are talking about faith in these
- 22:07spaces. Because just as culture should
- 22:11not be left behind, faith neither.
- 22:15Because as we walk into every room, each one of us has a
- 22:21unique calling, a unique purpose that should not be divided or be
- 22:28taken away, rather should be placed in the equation.
- 22:34So Jose, faith and the relationship with my Creator is
- 22:41one of the reasons, and I'll say the biggest reason I'm here
- 22:45today with you. Absolutely no.
- 22:48Thank you for sharing that. And we had a remark from Joe
- 22:53said we bring us a song and sofrito in our accent.
- 22:57Be proud, be proud. Absolutely.
- 23:00Yes, 100%. We we got to be proud of what we
- 23:04bring to the table and at the same time we bring all our
- 23:08talents, our purpose, our brilliance, the way we solve
- 23:13problems, our creativity to the workplaces and communities where
- 23:18we live and serve. So as we as we shift, I want to
- 23:22talk about you created the alive leadership method.
- 23:25What does that being como Sisi, being fully alive actually mean
- 23:29for leaders? What does that mean?
- 23:32You know, Jose was 2017. Every Puerto Rican out there and
- 23:38every Latino, you know, I have asked this question across
- 23:41audiences. And when I asked about 2017 and
- 23:46Hurricane Maria, everybody nods their heads saying, yes, I
- 23:51remember because, you know, everybody knew about that.
- 23:56You know, at the time, I was living in Washington, DC, and I
- 24:00was about to live in one of my biggest roles that I had in the
- 24:05federal government. And it was September 2017.
- 24:09And if you know about relationships of Hispanic moms
- 24:14with their kids, you know, I don't want to generalize, but
- 24:18but it's quite normal. You know, our moms, if we still
- 24:22have them with us, they will call us every day, they will
- 24:25text us. And if we don't answer, we get
- 24:29in trouble. It doesn't matter if I'm 304050,
- 24:33if I don't answer Mama I will get in trouble.
- 24:37So my mom and I, we communicated in a daily basis and asked
- 24:43Hurricane Maria hit. Which if we all recall, it
- 24:47happened so quick like it felt overnight.
- 24:51It became a category 45 year game.
- 24:54And as it passed through Jose, I didn't hear from my mother for
- 25:02over 12 days. And the images that we saw on
- 25:08the news were pure destruction. So I didn't know if my mom was
- 25:15one of the over 4000 people that died before, during or after and
- 25:21after Hurricane Maria. So when I heard back finally
- 25:25after 12 days, I learned that she lost absolutely everything
- 25:30in the process. You see her, her roof was made
- 25:35of sink and wood and but it had endured several hurricanes in
- 25:40the past, but not Hurricane Maria.
- 25:43And she took a part of the roof and water came in.
- 25:49So she lost absolutely everything in the process.
- 25:52I got the chance to travel back to the island three months
- 25:56after, and it was Christmas season.
- 26:00And you all know that Puerto Rico has the longest Christmas
- 26:04season in the world, I think only I think it's behind the
- 26:07Philippines. I think they celebrate even
- 26:10longer than us. I don't know.
- 26:11I heard that about that. But you know, it was the longest
- 26:14Christmas season. And I arrived there and I could
- 26:18sense the destruction. I knew as soon as I arrived to
- 26:24the island that it was not the same, that my people had to go
- 26:30through something truly horrible.
- 26:33So when I arrived home close to midnight, I was expecting nobody
- 26:37to welcome me, maybe my mom to give me a hug and wish me
- 26:40goodnight. But instead of say, over 20
- 26:45family members had flashlights. And when I opened the door of my
- 26:51car rental in the middle of the night, all of the sudden that
- 26:55commotion, it was like a party, like hello, we got the power
- 27:03back. And in my mind as that scene is
- 27:07unfolding in front of me, I couldn't help but ask myself how
- 27:11in the world people that lost absolutely everything that don't
- 27:16have running water, no electricity, food is cars
- 27:21getting gas require requires making 12 hour lines just to get
- 27:26gas for your car. I, I couldn't comprehend how in
- 27:32the world they were so happy, how in the world they were so
- 27:38alive. And in every scene and moment, I
- 27:43keep hearing estamos bebos, estamos bebos, we are alive.
- 27:49And as I saw that moment unfold in front of me, I said to
- 27:56myself, if more people can show up so alive, so joyful in the
- 28:04middle of literal destruction, why people in corporate America,
- 28:12people in government, people in our communities cannot show up
- 28:17in the same way? So as I am sitting in the
- 28:19airplane returning home in Washington, DCI am crafting a
- 28:25leadership framework that I call the Alive Method.
- 28:31And it has been tested across industries, across decades,
- 28:36really in the in the making. So Alive is literally a journey
- 28:42that every leader can take to fully show up alive to lead,
- 28:50lead and love as they go through their careers, through their
- 28:56lives. And those are 5 moves, five
- 28:59steps that every leader needs to take to show up fully alive in
- 29:05the workplace and in the communities they serve.
- 29:08That is stupendous. And you know, when we talk about
- 29:12organizations, how can organizations, somebody out
- 29:15there who's listening, how can they use that method to increase
- 29:19productivity, be better for the employees, etcetera, how would
- 29:22they use it? Yeah.
- 29:24So everything starts with awareness.
- 29:28How do we accelerate awareness? How do we bring our
- 29:33consciousness to the next level? And we have an exercise also
- 29:38that we call the Conscious Leadership model, where I walk
- 29:44the audience through a process of identifying their victories,
- 29:50their successes, but also their valleys, those failures, those
- 29:54trials, those moments of despair.
- 29:57Because in those victories and valleys, there is the evidence
- 30:03of what we have endured, the evidence of what we are made.
- 30:08And that level of consciousness is required to advance in our
- 30:14leadership journey also. I don't know if you know this,
- 30:17but when we are in a team where one of the members is not self
- 30:25aware, performance decreases by around 50%.
- 30:30Now let that let that number sink for a minute.
- 30:36And we all have been in spaces where we have a team member that
- 30:41have no clue how they're perceived and how their words
- 30:45and behaviors impact people. And by the way, Tasha Doctor,
- 30:50Tasha Urich, which is an expert in self-awareness, have
- 30:54spectacular research on this subject and she discovered that
- 30:58only around 10 to 15% of people are actually self aware now, 10
- 31:06to 15% of people. And if you are in a leadership
- 31:10position, that percentages percentage goes down below 10%.
- 31:16So we start with self-awareness and the goal of the leadership
- 31:21framework is to accelerate your awareness.
- 31:26So we start there. So we get to know self, we get
- 31:30to know where we come from, and most importantly, where we are
- 31:33right now. And we clearly define where is
- 31:38it that we're going in the future.
- 31:41Now, that sounds like a lot because it's the first step and
- 31:44it's a critical first step, but we don't stop there.
- 31:47After we accelerate awareness, then we shift to leverage
- 31:53belonging. And leverage, belonging is all
- 31:56about human connection. Human connection is what moves
- 32:01us, is what drives us. So we teach people how to
- 32:05meaningfully connect with each other through the power of
- 32:10stories, through the power of communication, through the power
- 32:15of fully showing up how we are not hiding parts of us, not
- 32:21shine away of our culture. So we have a system that helps
- 32:26people embrace the belonging, belonging to self, belonging to
- 32:31others, and most importantly, belonging to something larger
- 32:36than ourselves. So it's a trifecta that we call
- 32:41the, the, the belonging and transcendence is how do we get
- 32:45to the next level? And I'll say that's just step #2
- 32:49I'm just going to mention the other three because literally
- 32:53that that's what we cover in the book.
- 32:56Beautiful piece of art here. And the third step is
- 33:01integrating well-being. That's all about capacity,
- 33:06capacity building. How do we make sure that we're
- 33:10taking care of ourselves and that we don't burn out and stop
- 33:14earlier when we need, when we have so long to go.
- 33:18So that well-being, radical well-being is incredible in the
- 33:24book. And then the 4th step is
- 33:26conflict. How do we value conflict?
- 33:29Some people shy away from conflict.
- 33:32So I'm saying, listen, conflict is valuable and if we embrace
- 33:37it, we can make it productive. So we have a whole framework on
- 33:41how to truly don't be conflict averse, but head on with the
- 33:48conflict. And then the last step is
- 33:50elevating each other. And that's all about
- 33:53contribution. How do we contribute to our
- 33:57people and our peers? And that journey, which is five
- 34:03different steps, 5 different moves, is what allows people to
- 34:10intentionally choose to live every single day.
- 34:15Yeah, what? You beat me to the punch, Joey,
- 34:17because we're about to segue to the book, the book that you got.
- 34:22I want you to talk about your book, the idea and and later on
- 34:25we're going to show how people can order it.
- 34:26But please talk about your book. What what was the inspiration?
- 34:29How you got there that leaders and who else can use that book?
- 34:34You know this book, I said to myself, if I get to do just one
- 34:40thing, what is it that you will do?
- 34:42And we put so much love into into the book and it's 15
- 34:49chapters, 5 sections that I promise you, promise you will
- 34:56not leave you the same. This book, more than a book with
- 35:01stories and experiences and recommendations, is a workbook.
- 35:06It's a company book that you will get the chance to write, to
- 35:11answer questions to, to really go deep, full color.
- 35:16And it's a workbook that one executive the other day reach
- 35:20out to me out of nowhere and said, Joey, I keep going back to
- 35:26this part of the book where you had these 20 questions about
- 35:32designing the life that you want.
- 35:35And I went back to my answers and I reread them and I reread
- 35:41them again because it was so impactful.
- 35:45And then she said, and you keep challenging me in every step of
- 35:49the way. And by the way, this leader is
- 35:51not a Latina. This leader is from another
- 35:54community. So the book can impact across
- 35:58cultures. You know, Jose, I'm happy to say
- 36:01that we got books sent to India, to Germany, to United Kingdom,
- 36:07to China, Brazil, Costa Rica, Colombia, Venezuela, Mexico, all
- 36:14over United States and of course Puerto Rico.
- 36:17So this is a company book that you carry with yourself and that
- 36:23you used to go deeper and get to know yourself better so you can
- 36:29choose to live. Not just not just not just
- 36:33living. I'm talking about thriving in
- 36:36your relationships, in your workplace, in your life.
- 36:41So that's the whole purpose of this is giving people a road map
- 36:46they can take to choose to live, live and love every single day.
- 36:52So Joy, already I'm waiting on my I already ordered it.
- 36:55Just so you know, you must be backed up because I know the one
- 36:57that I ordered is the one you autograph.
- 37:00Yes, yes, we love doing that. Jose and I, I, I get so excited
- 37:07because I, I get to sign it and then include a few goodies in
- 37:11the bag because you know, when I, when people get this, I want
- 37:17them to literally just by looking at the colors, which
- 37:21look at the, the ocean in the background.
- 37:24It just mimics the color in, in the book.
- 37:26I want people to feel peace and energy.
- 37:30That's what we what it's a combination of those two is the
- 37:34peace of knowing that we will be OK and the energy of embracing
- 37:41the power that God has given us to pursue Our Calling.
- 37:46Yes, absolutely. And we have a question from Yven
- 37:50that says, what legacy do you hope your work leaves for future
- 37:55leaders? You know, I am in the process of
- 38:00finalizing A keynote presentation for a lead
- 38:05conference in in North Carolina and the topic is legacy
- 38:12leadership. And when I think about my
- 38:16babies, Teddy and Amelia, I want to transport myself to when I'm
- 38:268090 or maybe 100 or maybe 120, I don't know.
- 38:32But I want to transport myself into the future.
- 38:38I want to go to my last moments. I won that.
- 38:49My life is a testament of the following.
- 38:54I want my actions, my content, my interactions, my
- 39:01relationships to say be strong and courageous, be strong and
- 39:10courageous, be strong and courageous and choose to leave,
- 39:19choose to lead and choose to love.
- 39:24That's the legacy that I want to stay behind when I'm no longer
- 39:30here. Yeah, no, that, that is really,
- 39:33I mean, that is beautiful, Joey. I love that that, that that is
- 39:37something that, you know, all of us strive for, you know, as
- 39:41parents, you know, which brings me to what you just talked
- 39:45about. What does it feel like being a
- 39:48father now having children? I want to hear, if you don't
- 39:50mind you, if you can share that with with us, please.
- 39:54Oh my God, let me tell you. I'll say it's like so many
- 39:59emotions at the same time. 11 moment, I feel a lot of love.
- 40:05In the other moment, I feel a lot of despair.
- 40:09And then, you know, in the other second I'm so exhausted that I
- 40:14cannot even feel anymore. So I feel all the emotions at
- 40:22the same time. But but let me tell you, my baby
- 40:25boy, we all the three of us. We have birthdays within the
- 40:30same week. So I was born on September 25th,
- 40:34my Amelia on the 28th and my Teddy on the 29th.
- 40:38So we are basically grouped and see them become a little bit
- 40:44older Jose. Like this morning, I was
- 40:48watching my boy, my baby boy, and I looked at him and I said,
- 40:53Oh my gosh, you're so grown up. And what they have taught me in
- 41:01this season is to be present when I'm with them, To be so
- 41:09present that I can savor every moment, every second of their
- 41:16little words of their playing games, of Dada, please sit down
- 41:22with me, Let's play with this car or Dada hug me or Dada, stay
- 41:27with me. You know?
- 41:29Those moments I know will pass, but I want to savor them.
- 41:35And that's my current stage. This parenthood thing has
- 41:40changed me in ways that I never imagined.
- 41:44But the number one thing is, bro, it's no longer about you,
- 41:51it's about that. And that has expanded the way I
- 41:57show up for my clients, the way I show up for my people.
- 42:01This is not about me. This is about you all.
- 42:05So I will work to give you the tools, the push, the energy, the
- 42:11excitement, the activation that we all need from time to time.
- 42:16That is stupendous and event has said Amen to the stuff you said
- 42:20before and this right that that is so, so go through.
- 42:23So as we wind down, one of the things I want to do is go to how
- 42:26people can contact you and so on and anything else is and then
- 42:31I'll give you some more time for anything, but I really want to
- 42:33cover this and I will give it up to you.
- 42:35So there you go. Yes, those are, we have two
- 42:39places. Joey aviles.com is kind of the
- 42:42center of of our social media. So you can find our phone number
- 42:48202-855-4727. There is also a link that you
- 42:54can use to schedule some time to meet and greet up with us.
- 42:59And then if you want to get the book, we are exclusively selling
- 43:04our book in our Shopify store, choose to liveshop.com And if
- 43:11you buy it there, which by the way is the only way you can buy
- 43:14unless you are in Puerto Rico, we are in the stores here in
- 43:18Puerto Rico. But if you buy it there, you
- 43:21will get a signed copy that I personally send to to you all.
- 43:28So choose to leave chop.com and Joey aviles.com, which has a
- 43:33connection to all our social media presence.
- 43:40Yes, and I love those pages. We have put so much love into
- 43:44those pages because that's the link that I'm talking about.
- 43:48But here we created an exclusive site for all program event
- 43:54leaders. You know, if you're planning
- 43:55your conference, your Hispanic Heritage Month event, your
- 44:00leadership development event, we have a process that we follow
- 44:05that we call the the 3DS, the design, deliver and debrief.
- 44:11So we move through those 3 stages in creating experiences
- 44:17that are unforgettable. That's what we do.
- 44:20And you know, this part of the year is nonstop, Jose.
- 44:24You know, I'm traveling all over the place, from Houston to North
- 44:29Carolina to San Diego to many other places.
- 44:33So stay in contact because I want you to be inspired.
- 44:38Absolutely, absolutely. And I think you talked about
- 44:40this earlier that this model I see in.
- 44:43Front of you? Yes, that's the Alive model
- 44:48framework as the five sees, the five moves, the five
- 44:53capabilities every leader must embrace to be, to not be
- 44:58replaced by AI. That's what I'm focused here.
- 45:01I want my leaders to focus on the things that AI cannot
- 45:06replace, the things that we can do.
- 45:09And those are consciousness, connection, capacity, conflict
- 45:14and contribution. So those five and each one of
- 45:18those sees is connected to the live method which is laid out in
- 45:24the book. Yes, yes.
- 45:27And I thought I'd show this a little bit.
- 45:29You can explain to the audience what we have in front of us when
- 45:31they go on your website. Oh yes, and you know what?
- 45:35One of the, the, the, this is beautiful because I get the
- 45:40opportunity to kind of have a conversation with my younger
- 45:44self here and in the, in, in the, the website.
- 45:49I want to talk about my, about some people just talk about what
- 45:53they have accomplished in life. And I want people to know where
- 45:57I'm coming from. What, what you know, in the
- 46:00first picture there is my grandmother Ignacia and my
- 46:06grandfather Cobito, you know, and my my parents, my mom and
- 46:11dad and, and me growing up. And I want people to get the
- 46:17whole picture. You know, I part of my story,
- 46:21Jose, is that I spent 20 plus years being morbidly obese and
- 46:30the trials of all of that. I do not hide that part of my
- 46:35life. I live with it.
- 46:37And you can see all the pictures, all the leadership
- 46:41moments that I have had that made me who I am from my
- 46:47wedding. I need to update that side
- 46:49because I need to add Amelia and Teddy.
- 46:52That's see. The story continues.
- 46:54The story continues. But but that's, you know, each
- 46:58one of those pictures represent the DNA of who Joey is.
- 47:05And when people organizations hire me to inspire their people,
- 47:10this is what they get. Not just one part of me, but the
- 47:15ecosystem of what made Joey, Joey.
- 47:19Enjoy. When I saw this picture, I felt
- 47:21my heart because I saw my roots, I saw my family, I saw me Latino
- 47:28or any, you know, whatever it is.
- 47:29When you see things like that, it's about community, family and
- 47:33Nuka never forgetting where we came from.
- 47:35That's what I and I appreciate you putting this up here.
- 47:38Means meant a lot when I saw that.
- 47:41Absolutely. You know, you can see a widow,
- 47:43Ayina Paranda. There is a picture there, the
- 47:47one right at the top where I'm a baby, literally a baby.
- 47:50You're thinking weirdo. You know, Tito Cando and La
- 47:53Paranda and Mami madise 2 tenias about the Chiquito puando.
- 48:00You didn't shy away in one corner, you were in the middle
- 48:03playing the instrument. So you know, and I know that's
- 48:07the reality for many of us Puerto Ricans and when we get
- 48:10together with the family. So that is exactly what I wanted
- 48:14to to provoke Jose, those memories and that nostalgia.
- 48:20I I love this, especially for Hispanic heritage.
- 48:22One seeing all this, it reminds me of so much.
- 48:25And even when I wasn't in Portland, I living in New York,
- 48:27My my dad used to bring, you know, all these instruments and
- 48:31everything. It was like, Oh my God, it was
- 48:33amazing. Obango Yeah, you know, so it
- 48:36was, it was beautiful. So thank you for sharing that.
- 48:39And this is this. And this is how they can get in
- 48:42contact with you, Joey. I love I love this this this
- 48:46page. Jose, thank you so much.
- 48:49That's the calendly You can book sometime with me.
- 48:52The website they choose to leave chop and LinkedIn, which is my
- 48:57most active social media channel.
- 49:01So and Jose, by the way, you know in the website you all can
- 49:05follow. We're putting master classes
- 49:09together. There is a show coming up very
- 49:12soon to and a newsletter, so make sure to visit
- 49:17joeyaviles.com so you can get access to all those cool things.
- 49:23And Joey in an audience I went to the website to choose to live
- 49:27the easy to follow great information and make sure that
- 49:30you know, look at the cups. Matter of fact, I did order a
- 49:33cup, one of the cups you got. You know I got to get an.
- 49:35Updated one here, but yeah, go on.
- 49:39I'm gonna leave this up for a little bit, but you can always
- 49:41have access to it. I just do it, you know?
- 49:44And for those, just put your phone on there.
- 49:46A yellow line will come up, click it and it will take you to
- 49:49that site. It is so user friendly.
- 49:51Joey, this is your website. Your social media is stupendous.
- 49:55Let me put it to you. Thank you.
- 49:59You know, bro, that's what we're here for.
- 50:02And Jose from New York City says Boricua.
- 50:04Celebrate everything, yeah. That's true.
- 50:08I mean celebration we got to celebrate, man.
- 50:11I'm telling you, celebration is is is everything.
- 50:15It just makes me happy and we celebrate all things all things
- 50:19is a good to choose to commit Baccalaito see so cute.
- 50:23Just have fun with the family. Absolutely.
- 50:28So, and we'll come right back to, but we have another question
- 50:31that says if you could have a conversation with your younger
- 50:34self, what would you tell him? This is from Yvette.
- 50:41Let's do this live here with all of us and let's take that
- 50:46question, say and all of us, I'm going to drive this exercise.
- 50:53I want you to sit. We are I'm standing, but
- 50:56probably everybody else is sitting.
- 50:59Sit there and just think for a minute and go and travel to your
- 51:06teenage years. And I want to go to my 15 year
- 51:14old version. I have so many dreams, so many
- 51:21fears, so many opportunities, and I will tell my younger self
- 51:33to ignore the people that told me you're too much, you're too
- 51:43much. Ignore that because that
- 51:48mushness. I think I just create a word
- 51:52there that that it totally is OK.
- 51:57Some people categorize as too much baby is enough, enough for
- 52:05the challenges that you will face, for the positions and the
- 52:11places that you have to hold yourself.
- 52:15So no, you're not too much. You are enough.
- 52:22And that is the top message that I will say to my younger self.
- 52:28And by the way, this version of today, tomorrow will be my
- 52:33younger self. So I'm telling, I'm telling
- 52:35myself this today. Listen to me.
- 52:38You are enough. And that enoughness is what the
- 52:45world needs. So do not let the naysayers, the
- 52:52bullies, the people that don't get you, hold you or cage you.
- 53:01Ain't nobody got time for that. Show up, show up, That's the
- 53:06thing. Show up.
- 53:07That's my message here. See Jose, you have me yelling
- 53:11here in. In Hey, we need to let everybody
- 53:15know no, no, Gracia. And and as we get ready to
- 53:18close, I want to I want to ask you a question if, if you can
- 53:22leave, come on, say everybody listening right now with one
- 53:26mindset they should adopt tomorrow morning.
- 53:29What would it be and why? Liz from Brooklyn we need.
- 53:34More people to pay Jose. Right now our world, it's on
- 53:41fire from the meet, from from from the Middle East to South
- 53:47America to North America, the world is on fire.
- 53:53So I want people to care. And when I say care, I'm not
- 53:58saying jump on social media and post a little post or jump on
- 54:04social media and be aware of all the news or all everything that
- 54:08is happening. I'm not saying that actually a
- 54:12little bit of the opposite. Caring is about the people that
- 54:17is around us. And I want you to care.
- 54:21I want you to connect, I want you to acknowledge, I want you
- 54:25to relate and I want you to expand.
- 54:28And that's what care stands for. And it starts with meaningful,
- 54:35authentic connection. And if we all, Jose, connect
- 54:40with each other meaningfully and embrace the pain and the trials
- 54:46and the struggles and understand when we care, we can give.
- 54:50When we care we can change. When we care, we can expand.
- 54:55I'll tell you the world will be a better place if we care first.
- 55:02Absolutely. Oh my goodness, Joey.
- 55:06You know what, Imano? Joey, thank you.
- 55:10Thank you so much for sharing not just your knowledge, but to
- 55:13corazon your heart today, Imano. It means so much to me because
- 55:17what I'm what I'm what I'm taking away that leadership
- 55:20isn't so much about having all the answers, right?
- 55:23It's about inspiring others to become the best version of
- 55:27themselves. So you know, just listening to
- 55:30you reading your story in my mind, just that purpose service
- 55:33you come and say, say in faith, in transform, not only
- 55:37organization peridas lives. Bro, I just grasped Mano Gracia.
- 55:42Jose, I will be reminisce if I don't thank you my brother.
- 55:48I'm going to say this every post that you have, every exercise
- 55:54routine like you will wear Peloton.
- 55:56We love it. We jump in brother, your energy,
- 56:01your love, your wisdom, your know how is so needed.
- 56:07Thank you for the service, thank you for your spirit, thank you
- 56:13for your words and for creating spaces like this.
- 56:18Jose Tuare MI hermano Y de Bendigo Y Gracias for this
- 56:22space. Thank you.
- 56:23And I could not do it without mentioning.
- 56:25Of course, you know, Ivan was. Yes.
- 56:29During crime, and I want to say that and.
- 56:32We love you. We are.
- 56:34She is a blessing to me. So I want to send out.
- 56:37Yeah, Latina, Puerto Rico, you know, but.
- 56:39Yes. So.
- 56:40And love the whole team. It's a team, it's a teamwork
- 56:44because teamwork makes the dream work, you know?
- 56:47So I want everybody to have a great weekend and, and, and you
- 56:51too, Joey. And to your family, Queziote
- 56:53Bendiga, God bless you and just thank you, brother.
- 56:57Good. Gracias.
- 56:59Ladies and gentlemen, thank you very much for being here.
- 57:01I appreciate it. Get out that Joey, you're
- 57:03getting it from everybody. So enjoy gracias mucho amoro.
