- 0:00Chapter 4 from the book of Job. First let's pray.
- 0:03Dear Lord, please open our eyes to what you have to say through
- 0:07this chapter. We ask this in Jesus name, Amen.
- 0:14Chapter 4 begins. Then Eliphaz the timonite
- 0:20replied. Now, Eliphaz is one of Job's
- 0:23friends in the prior chapter. We know that they they came to
- 0:31to well in chapter 2, we know that his friends came to visit
- 0:34him and they sat with him for seven days and then Job spoke
- 0:39and then that was all of chapter 3.
- 0:42When Job spoke, then Eliphaz, the team and I, one of his
- 0:47friends start speaking. And this is interesting because
- 0:50it's very opening. It opens up your eyes to a lot
- 0:54of things here. So I'm going to read through the
- 0:57chapter. I'll go through the study
- 1:00guides, question and answers, and then I'm going to go into
- 1:03some notes that I made along here.
- 1:06So then Illefaz, the team and I replied, if someone ventures a
- 1:13word with you, will you be impatient?
- 1:16But who can keep from speaking? Think how you've instructed many
- 1:21how you have strengthened feeble hands, your words have supported
- 1:25those who stumbled, you have strengthened faltering knees.
- 1:30But now trouble comes to you, and you are discouraged.
- 1:34It strikes you, and you are dismayed.
- 1:37Should not your piety be your confidence, and your blameless
- 1:40ways your hope? Consider now who, being innocent
- 1:45has ever perished? Where were the upright ever
- 1:49destroyed? As I have observed, those who
- 1:52plough evil, and those who sow trouble, reap it at the breath
- 1:58of God. They perish.
- 2:00At the blast of His anger. They are no more.
- 2:03The lions may roar and growl, yet the teeth of the great lions
- 2:07are broken. The lion perishes for lack of
- 2:10prey, and the Cubs of the lioness are scattered.
- 2:14A word was secretly brought to me.
- 2:17My ears caught a whisper of it. Amid disquieting dreams, in the
- 2:22night when deep sleep falls on people.
- 2:25Fear and trembling seized me and made all my bones shake.
- 2:31A spirit glided past my face, and the hair on my body stood on
- 2:35end. It stopped, but I could not tell
- 2:39what it was. A form stood before my eyes, and
- 2:42I heard a hushed voice. Can a mortal be more righteous
- 2:46than God? Can even a strong man be more
- 2:49pure than his Maker? If God places no trust in his
- 2:54servants, if He charges his angels with error, how much more
- 2:59those who live in the houses of clay, whose foundations are in
- 3:04the dust, who are crushed more readily than a moth between dawn
- 3:09and dusk? They are broken to pieces,
- 3:12unnoticed. They perish forever.
- 3:14Are not the cords of their tent pulled up so that they die
- 3:18without wisdom? That's the end of chapter 4.
- 3:23There is so much in there. So I'm going to 1st go through
- 3:27the questions and answers for chapter 4 in the study guide.
- 3:30How had Job helped others? Job's godly lifestyle had been
- 3:36an example to many. He was a respected and
- 3:38influential leader who gave to those in need and saw that
- 3:42justice was done. What can we learn from Job's
- 3:46friends? Job's friends came to console
- 3:50him by sharing in his grief, but they soon began to accuse him
- 3:55rigidly, applying general principles to Joe's Job's
- 3:59specific situation. By distorting the truth in this
- 4:04way, Job's friends only added to his suffering.
- 4:09So what are we to make of the large sections of this book that
- 4:11record what came from the lips of Joe's Job's friends?
- 4:1615 chapters compared to 20 for Job.
- 4:19How much of what they said is true?
- 4:22How can we tell when they distorted or misapplied the
- 4:25truth and arrived at the wrong conclusion?
- 4:28The key to a correct understanding of these passages
- 4:31in Job Job is context taken apart from the rest of the book
- 4:36as well as the rest of the Bible.
- 4:38The words of Elliphaz and or Eliphaz and the others can be
- 4:45misleading. For example, when Eliphaz
- 4:49suggested that the innocent and the upright are never destroyed
- 4:52in verse 7. We should remember the Bible as
- 4:55a whole teaches that righteous may at times suffer undeserved
- 5:00calamities, persecution, or even death.
- 5:03The reference for that is Luke 13 verses one through 5.
- 5:07On the other hand, when Eliphaz said that God performs wonders
- 5:12that cannot be fathomed, miracles that cannot be counted,
- 5:17we see this is in chapter 5, verse 9.
- 5:20We see that this thought is consistent with the rest of the
- 5:23Bible. Even Job echoed echoed the same
- 5:26words in Chapter 9, verse 10. Beyond comparing what Job's
- 5:31friend said with the rest of the Bible, we can learn from their
- 5:34faulty logic. If sin causes suffering, they
- 5:38reasoned, then all suffering must be caused by sin.
- 5:42Not so. Jesus contradicted such
- 5:45simplistic explanations when he showed his disciples that the
- 5:49suffering comes not because of sin.
- 5:53That when he showed his disciples that some suffering
- 5:57comes not because of sin, but to bring glory to God.
- 6:02You can find that in John Chapter 9 verses one through 3.
- 6:05We can also learn from Job's friends that we should not pass
- 6:09judgment on those who suffer. Rather than attempting to offer
- 6:13short sighted explanations, Job's friends would have helped
- 6:16Job more by simply sharing his grief and admitting they did not
- 6:21know all the whys of life. Was Eliphaz saying that the
- 6:29innocent never die? Eliphaz articulated the
- 6:32conventional wisdom of the day that bad things don't happen to
- 6:36good people. His rather simplistic view must
- 6:41have added to Job's already intense pain.
- 6:44Job and his friends did not know what we know from chapters one
- 6:49through 2. Bad things do happen to good
- 6:52people. In fact, it is Job's experience,
- 6:55recounted through the inspiration of the Spirit, that
- 6:59helps us to see the things from this different perspective.
- 7:03What did Eliphaz mean by his reference to lions and great
- 7:09lions? Eliphaz was speaking here about
- 7:12the fate of the wicked who are sometimes compared to lions in
- 7:15the Bible, like in Psalms chapter 71735 and 58.
- 7:22Like lions, the wicked are often proud and defiant, yet they are
- 7:27not able to stand against God if he chooses to eliminate them.
- 7:33Then it says, Did Eliphaz see a ghost?
- 7:37Eliphaz claimed that he had a dream in which he saw a spirit.
- 7:43The alleged vision was the basis for the advice he gave to Job.
- 7:48It's worth noting that while Elephant's advice contained
- 7:52elements of truth, God eventually rebuked him for the
- 7:56counsel he gave Job in chapter 47, verse 7.
- 8:00The Bible does not speak of spirits of the deceased as
- 8:04wandering aimlessly or being without restraint.
- 8:09So I want to add some oh, that's the end of the questions and
- 8:12answers from the study Bible. So yes, the ghost that we, you
- 8:17know, that people talk about that they think that they are
- 8:19the dead, the dead ones or something like that.
- 8:22That is not biblical. There is a separation of people
- 8:27and we cannot interact with people.
- 8:30However, deceiving spirits can take on the form of someone like
- 8:36it says about Satan. He can appear as an Angel of
- 8:40light and they their purpose is often deceiving and a lot of
- 8:45times they can. What is in the Bible is they can
- 8:50appear to someone as someone else for example.
- 8:54I don't really know it doesn't say in I don't remember what
- 9:00chapter it was. It was in either Chronicles or
- 9:03Kings. I can't remember, but when King
- 9:07Saul went to see a medium and or wait, yeah, it was King Saul and
- 9:16he asked the medium to call upon Samuel who had already died.
- 9:23And he did see an appearance, but there was also a the medium
- 9:29realized who Saul was because he came and he was like hidden.
- 9:34He was trying to disguise his identity because mediums were
- 9:37not supposed to be doing that sort of a cult practice.
- 9:41But Saul himself went, he was the king.
- 9:44And I don't at that time, I don't know if he was the king.
- 9:47He was a former king or maybe it was during hit the struggle
- 9:51between David and Saul. I don't know if he was actually
- 9:54a king, but whatever he was, he was not supposed to be seeking
- 9:59the mediums to get advice. And he even said that he was
- 10:03going there because he wasn't hearing from God, probably
- 10:06because he wasn't obeying God. And that's, there's biblical
- 10:13scripture that supports that. And you know, if people are
- 10:18disobedient to God and they treat him poorly, they probably
- 10:23are not going to be hearing from him.
- 10:24However, somebody who turns and repents to him will like God
- 10:29will hear that prayer. It's very clear that's what God
- 10:32wants ultimately. But he doesn't like keep this
- 10:36hedge of protection around somebody if people keep choosing
- 10:40against him. So there are things that we give
- 10:43up when we are in rebellion to God and things can happen,
- 10:47happen like this. Like Saul is another example of
- 10:50that because he had God's spirit when he was anointed, he had
- 10:55God's spirit. And it said that God took his
- 10:58spirit from Saul and then sent a tormenting spirit.
- 11:03Now what we can understand from God is from the Bible, from
- 11:07Scripture, is that God will do these kinds of things or allow
- 11:12these things to happen. Allowed deceiving spirits and
- 11:16that to affect people to when they when they're like hard
- 11:22headed and stubborn and they don't turn to God.
- 11:25He will allow this to happen so that people can turn to him
- 11:31because that's what ultimately he wants.
- 11:33Like discipline is meant to change a person for their good,
- 11:38not to punish a person when it says that God disciplines those
- 11:42he's he loves, he disciplines his children.
- 11:45And it there's a righteous kind of discipline.
- 11:48It's not a beating of somebody, but sometimes it can be, you
- 11:52know, disciplines painful, whether it's to bring about
- 11:55correction or you know what, I guess if it's punishment, it's
- 12:01painful. If it's discipline, it's
- 12:03painful. They're both painful, but God
- 12:05disciplines and it's not meant to torment somebody.
- 12:09It's meant to bring about change in that person's life.
- 12:13So anyway, that's what the study Bible talks about.
- 12:18And then I had, I thought it was helpful to read again.
- 12:23I'm going to read the new living translation because it it in
- 12:29some ways it's a little bit clearer in our current day
- 12:32language. So I'm going to read that and
- 12:34then I'll reference some of the notes that I took in the NIV
- 12:40version. So this was then Illefaz, the
- 12:45team I replied to. Joe, will you be patient and let
- 12:48me say a word for who can keep from speaking out?
- 12:51In the past, you have encouraged many people.
- 12:54You have strengthened those who were weak.
- 12:57Your words have supported those who were falling.
- 13:00You encouraged those with shaky knees.
- 13:04So Illefaz is reminding Job you were a great support to a lot of
- 13:09people in your past. And then in verse 5, he says,
- 13:13but now when trouble strikes, you lose heart.
- 13:17You are terrified when it touches you.
- 13:20Doesn't your reverence for God give you confidence?
- 13:24Doesn't your life of integrity give you hope?
- 13:27That's kind of like the way he's saying that.
- 13:30That's almost like accusatory that he's saying this like you
- 13:35know, he's, he's accusing or almost like condemning Job, like
- 13:40you have a, a reverence to God. Where's your confidence in that?
- 13:46Doesn't your life of integrity give you hope?
- 13:49Well, that's like righteousness that's relying on self, which
- 13:52that is bad advice. They're like, yeah, that's never
- 13:56promised your life of integrity give you hope.
- 13:59Well, it's not what we do. It's what Jesus did on the cross
- 14:02that gives us hope. So again, that's faulty words
- 14:07out of his friend. But you know, maybe they had,
- 14:12obviously I say maybe, but obviously they probably never
- 14:15saw a righteous person have bad things happen to them.
- 14:19And so they didn't understand what was going on.
- 14:21We read like the Bible study Bible says, we read chapters one
- 14:25and two, that we know that Satan was the one behind all of this
- 14:29and he was in the presence of God and that's where all this
- 14:32came from. So it also helps us give, get or
- 14:37have more discernment. But he said so then in verse 7,
- 14:43his friend says stop and think, do the innocent die?
- 14:47When have the upright been destroyed?
- 14:50That's almost, that's very accusational.
- 14:52Like, you know, if you're so upright, you know, why are you
- 14:55like it's just it's not very helpful.
- 14:58It's it, you know what he's saying to his friends.
- 15:01He's he's not being supportive or uplifting.
- 15:04He's just, you know, just saying, hey, you know, all this,
- 15:09you supported other people, so why do you feel bad now?
- 15:12And, and so then he says my experience shows that those who
- 15:17plant trouble and cultivate evil will harvest the same.
- 15:21Well, there's that an accusation.
- 15:23I mean, there is some truth in that.
- 15:25Throughout Scripture, we can see what you sow, you will reap
- 15:30eventually. So there is truth in that.
- 15:33And he's saying my experience shows that those who do this
- 15:37will harvest the same. And so that he's he's judging
- 15:40from his own experience, which is true.
- 15:44It's like part truth but you know not in Job situation
- 15:50because he's not aware that Satan and God had a conversation
- 15:55and Job was being tested. Job didn't do anything wrong.
- 15:59He was being tested by God. So in verse 9A, breath from God
- 16:04destroys them. They vanish in a blast of his
- 16:07anger. The lion roars and the Wildcat
- 16:09snarls. But the teeth of strong lions
- 16:12will be broken, A fierce lion will starve for lack of prey,
- 16:16and the Cubs of the lioness will be scattered.
- 16:19Now here's where it gets pretty interesting.
- 16:22And I think we can have more discernment because we know
- 16:25chapters one and two, but obviously this one didn't and
- 16:30his friend didn't, and his friend is not able to
- 16:34distinguish between good and evil spirits.
- 16:41So verse 12, it starts. And this is the NLT vision.
- 16:46The truth was given to me in secret, as though whispered in
- 16:51my ear. It came to me in a disturbing
- 16:56vision at night when people are in deep sleep.
- 16:59Fear gripped me and my bones trembled.
- 17:03A spirit swept past my face and my hair stood on end.
- 17:08The spirit stopped, but I couldn't see its shape.
- 17:12There was a form before my eyes. In the silence, I heard a voice
- 17:16say, Now I'm going to stop there for a minute.
- 17:20So all of this, you know, if, if, if you're the person having
- 17:23this dream or vision at night and this is what you see, there
- 17:29are things that you know, people do express in the Bible.
- 17:33They express fear when they see something holy or heavenly or
- 17:39supernatural because they don't want to make of it.
- 17:42And, and, or they like automatically like bow down and
- 17:46worship it because they see that it's supernatural.
- 17:50Like when angels have come to different people in the Bible,
- 17:53their reaction often was to bow down to worship it because they
- 17:58knew it was something good. But it seems like they knew it
- 18:00was something good and not bad, otherwise they wouldn't be
- 18:03bowing down to worship it. But then the Angel will say to
- 18:06them, like, don't worship me, I'm a servant just like you.
- 18:10And so these kinds of things have happened through to other
- 18:14people in the Bible. But then like this one, it's
- 18:18like he doesn't even see the shape or the form.
- 18:21Usually other angels. They either look like people,
- 18:25like other humans or they're, you know, they're, they're just
- 18:31more like a person, like you see, like a human being.
- 18:34And, and apparently angels can take on different forms, you
- 18:37know, like it says, Satan can appear as an Angel of light.
- 18:41So when things like this happen, you have to pray about it and
- 18:47find out whether this is a something from God or something
- 18:51from the enemy, because the enemy can give us dreams.
- 18:56The enemy can get influence us. So his reaction here in verse
- 19:0014, he says, fear gripped me. Now people could be fearful from
- 19:04an Angel from a good Angel, but that's only momentary because
- 19:08usually the good Angel says, Hey, I'm a messenger from God.
- 19:11You know, I've come to you and it's you know, I have a message
- 19:14for you. It's always something is
- 19:16announced so that fear doesn't last.
- 19:19But in this situation, we see this fear is lasting.
- 19:21His bones are trembling. And God does not give us a
- 19:25spirit of fear, but of courage. So something godly, I mean an
- 19:32Angel who explains who they are will be encouraging, but one who
- 19:37never explains who they are. And it says like he couldn't see
- 19:40a shape. So this almost seems like it
- 19:43could be like a demon or something that it didn't have a
- 19:47body or something. He couldn't see his shape.
- 19:49He just there was something that he saw and it scared him.
- 19:52It made the hair stand on end. I think there's a sensitivity to
- 19:57this thing that he saw. And then there was this form
- 20:01before his his eyes. And then there was in the in the
- 20:05silence, I heard a voice say, So spirits do have.
- 20:11They have. They can.
- 20:13They can speak. They they are persons.
- 20:15They are like, I don't know, there's like demons are
- 20:18disembodied spirits. So demons are things that do not
- 20:22have bodies. So this could be a demon spirit.
- 20:25I don't know. But anyway, verse 17 says can a
- 20:32mortal be innocent before God? Can anyone be pure before the
- 20:37Creator? Now those are truths.
- 20:40Can immortal be innocent before God?
- 20:42I mean, we're not innocent. Can anyone be pure before the
- 20:46Creator? The answer to those are no.
- 20:48But you have to also think that these are like enemy words.
- 20:52It's a threat. It's not anything good.
- 20:56You know, sometimes God does put people in their place, but this
- 21:00is obviously not God. So there's the way it's being
- 21:04described. And so this is something else.
- 21:07And we have the benefit of chapters one and two.
- 21:09We know that Satan is is doing is behind this.
- 21:13So and here we know that this isn't God because the next
- 21:16things, the next verse in 18, it says if God does not trust his
- 21:21own angels and has charged his messengers with foolishness, how
- 21:27much less will he trust people made of clay?
- 21:31That's very condemning and it's talking down to people.
- 21:34It's like it's so negative about people like, hey, if you know,
- 21:39if God doesn't trust his own angels, like we're great and
- 21:43he's charged us with foolishness when they do wrong, You know,
- 21:47some are angels are chained in a place until the very end of
- 21:52days. We know that from the Bible.
- 21:55But if God does not trust his own angels and have charged his
- 21:59messengers with foolishness, how much less will he trust people
- 22:04made of clay? So we were made from the dust of
- 22:07the earth. I mean, that's, you know,
- 22:10scriptural. And so this being is telling his
- 22:15friend that God doesn't trust his angels and he's charged his
- 22:20messengers or his angels with foolishness.
- 22:23And then how much less do you think he's going to trust you
- 22:25people? Well, we know from Scripture
- 22:28that God loves his people. God's people are his creation.
- 22:32He created people to be in relationship with them.
- 22:35God doesn't have to trust people.
- 22:38He knows that people. He's, you know, at one point he,
- 22:41he was like, he regretted, like what he had done.
- 22:46I don't know if that's the right word for it in the book of
- 22:48Genesis, because he saw that every thought and inclination of
- 22:51the human was wicked as a result of sin.
- 22:55So I then it says they are made of dust, crushed as easily as a
- 23:00moth. So this is, to me, very
- 23:03threatening message that this being is giving his friend,
- 23:08putting down people, saying that these people are going to be
- 23:12crushed. It's not uplifting, it's not
- 23:13talking about repentance, it's not talking about turning to
- 23:17God. It's not talking about trusting
- 23:19in the Lord. None of those things.
- 23:21All it's doing is saying it's condemnation, it's accusing,
- 23:26it's a threat, and these are all enemy things.
- 23:30So if Eliphaz had discernment of spirits, he would see these
- 23:35things. Then it continues to go on this.
- 23:38The spirit continues saying they are alive in the morning but
- 23:43dead by evening, gone forever without a trace.
- 23:46What kind of hope is that? You know, like talking about
- 23:50death? Well, who comes to kill, steal,
- 23:54kill and destroy? That's what Satan does.
- 23:57So it's a threat here. It's like, yeah, they're alive
- 24:00in the morning, but dead by evening, gone forever without a
- 24:03trace. Like this is evil talk here.
- 24:07Their tent cords are pulled and the tent collapses and they die
- 24:11in ignorance. So that's that's the conclusion
- 24:15of the new living translation of chapter 4.
- 24:18And it that's all enemy stuff. And so this is this is clearly
- 24:24the enemy and maybe at this point in time, or maybe just as
- 24:29a person, he had never experienced something like this,
- 24:32but he knew there was a spirit happened in his dream.
- 24:35But The thing is, he so he takes the advice from the spirit and
- 24:41starts accusing Job. And that makes it very clear why
- 24:46God rebuked him for this. And you know, it said God
- 24:49eventually rebuked him for the counsel he gave Job in chapter
- 24:5242, verse 7. He didn't discern the Spirit
- 24:56that was giving him this message.
- 24:58So he took the enemy's message and spoke it to Job when that
- 25:04was not even right, like he didn't even know what was going
- 25:07on. And so it's very important to
- 25:13consider those things and to pray about those things.
- 25:15If, and I speak of this as somebody who does get dreams and
- 25:21I can tell when my dreams are from God and when they are not
- 25:26from God. And we all, if you get dreams,
- 25:30you really have to pay attention to these things because we don't
- 25:34want to be like Iliphaz and, and say things, you know, out of
- 25:43context or relay a message that really wasn't from God.
- 25:47And I think that's a lot of that stuff is going on right now.
- 25:51And so it's very important to be aware of it and to be cautious
- 25:59when sharing. I have shared, well, I've had
- 26:02like 106 dreams I think and I've probably shared about four of
- 26:07them. And the ones that I have shared
- 26:11were generally they were uplifting, they were redeeming,
- 26:15they were good things from God and, and there was encouraging
- 26:23those kinds of things. The other ones you know,
- 26:28depends, but I don't share every single dream obviously.
- 26:32But anyway, this is a good chapter for me to read too,
- 26:37because it you know, just to really there's a sense when you
- 26:42have a dream, you either feel like really good, like I
- 26:45remember my very first rapture dream that I had.
- 26:48It was all like a blended reality with with what's in the
- 26:54Bible. And it was early on in my faith
- 26:59journey with God when I was getting closer to him is about,
- 27:01you know, a little bit after I was baptized when I decided I
- 27:06didn't want to be a hypocrite anymore and made a commitment to
- 27:09God. That's, you know, it was several
- 27:12months after that. It was, I remember it was April
- 27:1620, I think it was April 22nd of 2022.
- 27:21I don't know if the 22nd is right, but it was April of 2022.
- 27:25And and that it just my reaction to that was like, that was the
- 27:32the most awesome, incredible dream I've ever had in my life.
- 27:37And it was very encouraging and it really told the Bible truth
- 27:41and it gave revealed things to me that I didn't quite know yet
- 27:45from the Bible. But then after researching it, I
- 27:49found this is in the Bible. This is scriptural.
- 27:51It was things that I didn't know.
- 27:53And so the only thing I'll say about that is that the what
- 27:56people call the rapture is definitely real and there's no
- 28:01doubt it's in scripture. We don't know when it's going to
- 28:04be, but it's definitely true. I would say, hey, I've had
- 28:09confirmation. I'm going to say from God, it
- 28:12was in a dream, but I've had three dreams and there was 1
- 28:16commonality in all three dreams and everything went black right
- 28:21before it happened in every single one of the dreams.
- 28:24And then I began to rise. And so I the only reason, you
- 28:32know, people would say, well, why did you, why would God give
- 28:36you this dream? I would say that the only reason
- 28:38if it was from God was to encourage other people that when
- 28:42things get really, really dark, just keep your hope because
- 28:47there is a restoration, there is a promise that God gave that He
- 28:53keeps his promises, and someday it will happen and someday we
- 28:58will be in the presence of God. So the most important thing that
- 29:02all of us can do right now is, is generally to repair our
- 29:06relationship with God, to repent, turn away from sinful
- 29:11ways, turn towards God, make God our priority, and then just
- 29:19encourage others to do the same and be there for other people
- 29:23because we can do nothing on our own, but everything is through
- 29:28God and Christ strengthens us. And we are going to be
- 29:32celebrating this weekend, Resurrection Sunday.
- 29:36So I hope you all appreciate or realize how grateful we all
- 29:41should be that Jesus selflessly did this for us out of love so
- 29:48that we could be with him in the Kingdom of God when that day
- 29:52comes when Jesus returns. So I hope you have a wonderful
- 29:58Holy Week. The rest of the Holy Week, this
- 30:00is actually Wednesday, April four, first before Holy Week or
- 30:05in the middle of Holy Week. So I'm going to conclude now.
- 30:11And if you are not subscribed, please do so.
- 30:14If you felt this beneficial, please share this with someone
- 30:18and come back next time for Chapter 5.
- 30:21Thank you.
