- 0:0220 years ago this year, a kid finally got off the bench and
- 0:05he's been on the floor ever since.
- 0:07There's a story behind that. This is your daily message from
- 0:11Chad #1192 to upgrade your mental game today by telling
- 0:15yourself a better story. Because the most important story
- 0:17you hear is the story you tell yourself.
- 0:20This message is dedicated to Jason McElwain.
- 0:23Here's the upgrade. You think your best moment is
- 0:26the whole story, but upgraded thinking knows your best moment
- 0:28is just the first line of a much longer one.
- 0:31Here's the story. On February 15th, 2006, it was
- 0:36Senior Night for the Greece Athena Trojans, a high school
- 0:40team in Greece, NY, a suburb of Rochester.
- 0:43Jason McElwain had been the team student manager for three
- 0:46seasons. See, he was diagnosed as
- 0:49autistic at 2 and didn't talk until he was eight.
- 0:53At 5 foot six, he had never played a single second of
- 0:56varsity basketball. His job was water bottles,
- 0:59towels and the scorebook. His coach, Jim Johnson, dressed
- 1:03him for the final home game as a senior night gesture.
- 1:07Nobody expected him to play. Athena was blowing out
- 1:10Spencerport, a team that would finish the night with 43 points
- 1:14total. With three minutes and 19
- 1:17seconds left on the clock, coach Johnson put Jason J Mack
- 1:21McElwain in. His first shot was an air ball.
- 1:26His second one got blocked. Then something changed.
- 1:29He caught the ball 1/3 time, squared up and buried it.
- 1:33Then another 3. Then another.
- 1:36By the final horn, he'd made 63 pointers and A2 point basket, 20
- 1:42points in 3 minutes and 19 seconds.
- 1:44The crowd stormed the court and carried him off on their
- 1:48shoulders. That year, he won an ESPY award
- 1:51for the best sports moment. That part of the story most
- 1:55people already know. Here's the part most people
- 1:58don't. Jason didn't take the moment and
- 2:01recede back into the stands. He became a volunteer assistant
- 2:05coach at Greece Athena, working the same bench under the same
- 2:09coach who'd put him in. In a February 2026 interview
- 2:14marking 20 years since that night, he'd said he said, I've
- 2:18coached for 19 years now. He coached AAU ball.
- 2:22He's coached for the YMC since 2008.
- 2:25He's a girls basketball referee official now and an employee of
- 2:29the Greece School District in upstate New York.
- 2:33He also runs a a show spotlighting other athletes
- 2:36still trying to get there 4 minutes and is a speaker with
- 2:39the All American Speakers Bureau.
- 2:42He didn't get famous for one night and disappear.
- 2:45He got famous for one night and built a career on the floor.
- 2:49The better story to tell yourself is my special moment
- 2:52isn't a mountain top, but my opportunity to keep climbing.
- 2:56Tell me a story about the moment that started something for you
