- 0:26Hello dear listeners!
- 0:28Welcome back!
- 0:29We are back to the Pop Culture Junkie Podcast.
- 0:33This is going to be an exciting episode for the Pop Culture Junkies.
- 0:37Starting things off, I am Shauna and I am joined by my usual Junkie.
- 0:43Nicole.
- 0:44And it is my honor and pleasure to introduce all of you to our newest junkie, Olivia
- 0:52Rodi.
- 0:53We're excited to have you.
- 0:55Awesome.
- 0:56I am so excited to be here with you guys today.
- 1:01And forever more.
- 1:02You're not going anywhere.
- 1:04Shauna knows I am quite hard to get rid of.
- 1:08I am just just latching on after all these years.
- 1:12I thought I had been trying to give a rash.
- 1:16I am just kidding.
- 1:17You are a lovely rash.
- 1:18Yeah.
- 1:19A welcome rash.
- 1:20I don't know if there is a welcome rash.
- 1:23Well, we'll take that as my intro.
- 1:27Shauna would describe me as a welcome rash amongst pop culture.
- 1:32Really here to give you all the CD conspiracy, all the blind items and the things they don't
- 1:39want to print.
- 1:40But yeah, I am really excited to be here.
- 1:42Shauna and I are both big, Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans.
- 1:48Anything true blood.
- 1:49And, you know, slowly but surely I have convinced her to become a Swiftie, but she won't tell
- 1:54you that.
- 1:55I'm not sure if I'm going to take the title of Swiftie on yet.
- 1:58I'm like, "Swiftie Light."
- 1:59I'm like the Diet Coke.
- 2:00I'm like, "You're engaging with the idea of it."
- 2:04I am flirting with being a Swiftie.
- 2:07And then I'm going to convince you to be a little monster and get you on that Gaga train.
- 2:12I think you could do that.
- 2:13I think you could do that.
- 2:14I like enough, you know, drag shows.
- 2:18We love a performance in this household.
- 2:20So, you know, ultimate performer.
- 2:23We love the guys here, popular, gentle, fast, fast.
- 2:27Absolutely, absolutely.
- 2:29So I know a lot about you because we are best friends.
- 2:35That's easy.
- 2:39But to everybody else listening and Nicole, what else are you into?
- 2:44What kind of shows do you like to watch besides Buffy and Taylor's?
- 2:48Who else do you listen to?
- 2:51Yeah.
- 2:52So, you know, I would say quite a hodgepodge of different things, you know, when I was younger.
- 2:58I was really quite a Josie and the Pussycats girl.
- 3:02If you know, you know, that album is absolutely iconic.
- 3:07Most people I think would describe me as a horror movie obsessed, true crime lover.
- 3:13And then really just like quirky conspiracy theory girl here, you know, none of the harmful
- 3:18stuff.
- 3:19We don't need to go down a rabbit hole of Q and on.
- 3:23But like the fun ones like Avril LeBene is a clone or those really silly ones where you
- 3:30can have fun and get lost in it.
- 3:32But overall, I would say anything witchy, anything spooky, and anything just gossip related.
- 3:39Because you know, a girl loves to gossip.
- 3:42Yes.
- 3:43Nicole is our tree prime junkie here too.
- 3:47Oh my gosh.
- 3:48I could talk forever without him.
- 3:50You're probably better than I am at it.
- 3:52I'm not like an expert, but I enjoy it.
- 3:55I just am like, so chronically online and I work from home.
- 4:00And so because of that, it's truly like I just cannot not listen to like YouTube things
- 4:06and things like that.
- 4:08We had a whole episode years ago to dedicate it to like conspiracy theories.
- 4:15And one of them was the Avril LeBene has been replaced one.
- 4:19And then we had, you know, that two-pock is alive on an island.
- 4:23Do you remember any of the other ones we had Nicole?
- 4:27Yeah.
- 4:28Mine was Michael Jackson's still alive.
- 4:29Yes.
- 4:30It's always like an Elvis is still alive, like Princess Diana's still alive.
- 4:36I liked the Katy Perry and a JonBenet Ramsay are the same person.
- 4:40That's interesting.
- 4:42That one is actually really crazy.
- 4:45Whenever you get into it, you're like, wait, what?
- 4:47You don't like tipping like this is bullshit.
- 4:50And then by being like, wait a minute.
- 4:52So you caw.
- 4:53No, I mean she did hate her parents, baby.
- 4:56Like, you never know.
- 4:59That's, yeah, that's pretty crazy.
- 5:01What's another one?
- 5:03Britney Spears is dead for sure.
- 5:06Sean is a big believer in that.
- 5:08I got Sean to down this rabbit hole and then I just was like, I can't do it anymore.
- 5:13No, I think she's dead.
- 5:14I am deep in Britney TikTok for sure.
- 5:18I just saw this one.
- 5:19I'm sure you seen it too.
- 5:20It's like where she's like moving her hands in front of her face.
- 5:23And you could see her face completely changed and they're like, yeah, there's an AI filter
- 5:26on her.
- 5:27Like, it's a green screen behind her.
- 5:29Like, the yellow color is in the background completely moved out of the frame and pictured
- 5:33doesn't even move at all.
- 5:34It's like, okay, I believe she's dead.
- 5:36I do.
- 5:37The follow up to that is someone super imposed Jamie Lynn on the part where like the eyes
- 5:44change and it looks exactly like her.
- 5:47Sean, I said to you, I don't think you're going to be able to do it.
- 5:50Yeah, you did.
- 5:51Okay.
- 5:52I said a shocked emoji like, oh, okay.
- 5:55But yeah, I was like, I was deep.
- 5:57It like brought me back in.
- 5:59But, you know, one of the things I also love is really like tarot as well and like anything
- 6:04witchy.
- 6:05And so there's this celebrity pop culture readers names and for Dirty.
- 6:10And he does all these readings that end up coming true.
- 6:13And he is like a giant Brittany fan.
- 6:16And so he did one.
- 6:17And basically he was like, it's more so that she's like trying to like ruin her image so
- 6:24people can't like make money off of her.
- 6:26That was like his reading of it.
- 6:28But I thought that was really interesting.
- 6:29You know what?
- 6:31I can totally see that because I'm not convinced that she's dead.
- 6:36Like I think it has heard dancing in the videos, but I think that they were all shot probably
- 6:43at the same time and a long time ago.
- 6:45The show post, like the same video over and over again.
- 6:49And like the same outfit doing, I don't know, it's weird.
- 6:52And then she'll post them like weeks later.
- 6:55So I don't think she's dead, but I think that she's purposefully kind of posting weird shit.
- 7:01I don't know.
- 7:02She doesn't want anyone to have control over it.
- 7:04And so she's like fine, I'll just host things that people think I'm too cute for coca-pops
- 7:09for.
- 7:10Mm-hmm.
- 7:11One of the crazy things that I didn't really realize this at the time.
- 7:15So like when Frubert me first started, the initial beginning of it is she was like twirling
- 7:21and something like that.
- 7:22And she has a hat.
- 7:23And whenever she goes to put the hat on her head, there's like a tiny, tiny little help me
- 7:29on the hat.
- 7:30And so that was, people saw that years and years and years ago.
- 7:35And then it started the actual Frubert movement.
- 7:38So it is kind of like, oh my gosh, she's actually sending its messages through these things,
- 7:43right?
- 7:44And so when you think about that and really look at it, it's like, okay, well she knows
- 7:49that she can send signals this way.
- 7:52And that her fans are going to watch and take it apart.
- 7:55Yeah.
- 7:56Yeah, but I mean, if you could drugged on lithium for more than like six months, sans 13 years,
- 8:02you know, your brain's going to be messed up, right?
- 8:05Like your brain isn't the same.
- 8:08You've just ruined it, you know?
- 8:10So she's got that going on in trauma.
- 8:12And then it's also like, is there like this secret message she's sending as well?
- 8:17But the three of us need to like get together and find Brittany and solve this mystery.
- 8:23You guys are going to be like the pop culture junkie mystery machine.
- 8:28Yeah.
- 8:29I love that.
- 8:30One, one really popular one as well that a lot of people aren't as aware of is the free
- 8:36band movement as well.
- 8:38So you've probably seen a lot of like news stories of like, bam losing his mind on his
- 8:43family members and he's broken out of rehab.
- 8:46Bambarger, yeah, from Jackass.
- 8:48And so he's had a lot of the same like really Britney treatment where it's like, he's crazy.
- 8:53He's like all this stuff, but it's come out that his family has been abusing his conservatorship
- 9:00as well.
- 9:01How did he get into the conservatorship in the first place?
- 9:04Yeah.
- 9:05So when Ryan done a from Jackass died, bam went into like a deep alcoholism.
- 9:12So like he did need treatment, right?
- 9:14Yeah.
- 9:15They put him into treatment and then, you know, over time, they put him into a conservatorship
- 9:21and they just kept putting him in.
- 9:23They made him spend like $600,000 on rehab in the last 18 months.
- 9:27That is own money.
- 9:28It's, yes.
- 9:29She does.
- 9:30Yeah, it's pretty crazy.
- 9:31I'll have to do like a deep dive one day of like the whole thing, but there is a lot
- 9:36of this like TMZ calling these people crazy when like it's, it's who's puppeteering
- 9:44that message for them ultimately.
- 9:46Absolutely.
- 9:47Yeah, that pisses me off so much when we just kind of have this so and so crazy and man
- 9:51defines this crazy and like she obviously needs help you guys like just calling her out
- 9:57for the goofy shit that she's doing and like, you know, I'm not going to put myself on a pedestal
- 10:02when I see she's wandering the streets and make it.
- 10:04I'll read those articles too.
- 10:05Like what is going on?
- 10:07But yeah, at the end of the day, I mean, it's like Aaron Carter.
- 10:10He obviously needed a lot of help, but all we did was just kind of pick him apart about.
- 10:16Oh my gosh.
- 10:17Did you watch that new documentary on Hulu about him?
- 10:22Yeah, I thought yes.
- 10:25Oh, it's, it was actually done in pretty well taste, I think, but yeah, it was just really
- 10:31sad.
- 10:32They gave him his flowers quite a bit of like you were able to like pave the way for like
- 10:37a Justin Bieber and all this stuff, but they did talk about the House of Carter's episode
- 10:44where like him and Nick got super physical and just kind of like the improper home life
- 10:50but he really had and how he didn't stand a chance.
- 10:53But man, I'm going to have to add that to my watch list.
- 10:56It was good.
- 10:57It was good.
- 10:58So what else have you guys been watching this week?
- 11:00Nicole, have you been bingeing anything new or what's taken up your time this week?
- 11:05Gosh, I feel like I haven't been watching very much.
- 11:08I've just been watching sports.
- 11:09It's playoff season for hockey and basketball.
- 11:12Yeah, it goes on.
- 11:14Yeah, and but I have been keeping up weekly bit the real houseways of New Jersey.
- 11:20That's like the one show that I will watch.
- 11:22It's kind of crazy.
- 11:24A lot has been happening.
- 11:25I don't even know where to start.
- 11:28Teresa, if you know, you know, she is a different kind of crazy than what we were just
- 11:33talking about.
- 11:34She just is manipulative and tries to make everyone else look bad when she's the one in the
- 11:39wrong.
- 11:40But nothing's going to change.
- 11:42She's been on the show for the beginning and she's been the same ever since.
- 11:46But do you think her sister is actually going to end up leaving?
- 11:52Because there are sprue members that they're saying that they don't think they can film anymore.
- 11:58Melissa?
- 11:59Yeah, after the reunion.
- 12:01I guess there was a bit.
- 12:02I could see them not coming back.
- 12:04I could see that either like Bravo, not I mean, as much as Teresa makes the show, I could see
- 12:10them like not giving her a contract or I could see Melissa leaving.
- 12:13I could see one of them definitely not coming back.
- 12:15Did they get like a fist fight?
- 12:16Are you going to say something?
- 12:18I don't know.
- 12:19We don't know yet.
- 12:20They mean having a contract.
- 12:21Yeah, but they said it's like Eric yet?
- 12:22No, but they said this is like the worst reunion that's ever happened.
- 12:25Or that one that has flipped tables.
- 12:29So if it's the worst she's ever been like she's saying.
- 12:32Who amongst us hasn't flipped Jesus flipped tables?
- 12:38It's cool.
- 12:39It happened.
- 12:40Jesus, I think Jesus was building the tables, but.
- 12:44No, look it up in the Bible, Olivia.
- 12:48Jesus flipped the tables.
- 12:50It's the yesified version of Jesus who stayed.
- 12:53So basically Jesus would have fitted with the real housewives.
- 12:57Got it.
- 12:58Perfect.
- 12:59Every time I think of Teresa, I just think of a South Park episode where she's like,
- 13:04"Yemeth Gavage."
- 13:05That one's so good.
- 13:08I'd probably see no one even though you're not a real housewives.
- 13:12I'm so behind on.
- 13:14So far.
- 13:15It's always.
- 13:16It's always so far.
- 13:17I know.
- 13:18It makes me like I haven't watched a new episode since college.
- 13:21Like me and Jessica used to binge it in college.
- 13:24And then it was like, I don't like that low-brow humor.
- 13:27That's a terrible and it was.
- 13:29I just see like, "Oh, come on.
- 13:31Kim and I watch all of the same shows.
- 13:34We do.
- 13:35Except for what I'm doing."
- 13:36That was a trap.
- 13:37That was a trap.
- 13:38I'm not falling for this.
- 13:39I knew what he liked.
- 13:40It was just Pokemon.
- 13:41That is it.
- 13:42One drag interest.
- 13:43Oh, and drag bossy.
- 13:44And drag bugling.
- 13:45You know, it's a little too in the gutter forum.
- 13:46He like says other part to dance.
- 13:47I've been watching a lot lately.
- 13:57You see here.
- 13:58Okay, so one show that I have been binging, because we do watch a lot of the same shows.
- 14:03So sometimes when he's not home, I'm like, "I need like a Shawna show."
- 14:07So I started love and death with Elizabeth Olsen.
- 14:10It was a good--
- 14:11It was a good--
- 14:12Yes.
- 14:13I'm a huge Christian Ritter fan.
- 14:15She's probably one of my favorite actresses.
- 14:17She's got a small part in it.
- 14:20But it is based on a true story of this woman named Handy.
- 14:24She's in Texas, and she is a church-going lady, and she sings in the choir, and one of her
- 14:32good friends is married to this guy, Alan.
- 14:35Handy approaches Alan and just goes, "I found you very attractive."
- 14:39Would you like to have an affair?
- 14:43Oh, did you see my other ones?
- 14:46There's for some reason.
- 14:47They've made like three of the-- in the same year of the same story.
- 14:52Yeah, with Jessica Beale.
- 14:54And that one's just called "Pandy."
- 14:56I haven't watched that one.
- 14:58It's a true story, so I mean, I guess kind of spoilers, but literally this is based on a true
- 15:03story.
- 15:05Candy ends up-- I guess, okay, spoiler alert, if you don't want to know what happens in this
- 15:12actual crime that happened like 30 years ago.
- 15:14You sound like I'm dead.
- 15:17We do that so much on this show.
- 15:19Well, we halfway through, like, talk, spoil something, and then we'll be like, "Oh, wait,
- 15:23actually, by the way, spoiler alert."
- 15:26Candy kills Alan's wife with an axe.
- 15:29She hacks this bitch.
- 15:31Lily Borden.
- 15:32Yes, she hacks her butt.
- 15:34It's self-defense, maybe.
- 15:38But yeah, I would definitely pop love and death.
- 15:43Every episode is very well-acted.
- 15:45The set pieces are really cool.
- 15:46Set in the 70s.
- 15:48The costumes are amazing.
- 15:49Elizabeth Olson is just a powerhouse.
- 15:51But yeah, the whole cast is really great.
- 15:54I've also been watching very weak to heat.
- 15:57That's one of those shows where we always enjoy it, but it never really blows my mind.
- 16:04I'm never like, "Oh, my God, I can't wait for the next episode of Fairy."
- 16:07We're always sitting down and we're like, "Oh, yeah, Fairy's new.
- 16:09Let's watch it."
- 16:10It's the last season.
- 16:11Bill Hader is great as usual.
- 16:14They're trying to-- I don't know how they're going to wrap this shit up because very easy,
- 16:20they're going to go back to J.O.L. or "He has to die."
- 16:23I don't know how they're going to do this.
- 16:25But I'm going to pop that.
- 16:27And then the last show that I want to mention, I'm sorry.
- 16:30I'm so much TV.
- 16:33I should be on a podcast where I could talk about this show.
- 16:36Wow.
- 16:37Every time I think about Bill Hader, now I think of Rachel Bilsen saying she never had an orgasm
- 16:43until she was with them.
- 16:45Now I'm like, "Bill Hader's just got to get a dick you down."
- 16:50I feel like Bill Hader has a big dick energy for sure.
- 16:52I could see them having a trousers.
- 16:54Oh, I mean, Rachel Bilsen just confirmed it.
- 16:57Yeah.
- 16:58We want to-- he's funny.
- 16:59And he has a big dick.
- 17:00We'll take it.
- 17:01We are going to take it.
- 17:03We stand.
- 17:04And he's like media-- he's like media, Mockley.
- 17:07We're like, you're not like, "Uh, like he's not great, but like he's not a--."
- 17:11So I'm sketches in SNL where I'm like, "Oh, Bill Hader can get it."
- 17:15And then I watch Barry and I'm like, "Oh, I mean, he can still get it."
- 17:21But like, I'm not going to show my friends his picture afterwards and be like, "Look,
- 17:24what's that?"
- 17:25You're not bragging on that?
- 17:30I'm not going to brag on it.
- 17:31Only if he consented.
- 17:34If he consented to me showing my friends a picture of his big trousers, Nick.
- 17:39But yes, I would show it to you guys.
- 17:42Honestly, Haley leaves and this turns to like a redid ex-pot.
- 17:45I know.
- 17:46The minute Haley leaves, we're like, "We're crazy.
- 17:50You trousers, say."
- 17:51You know what?
- 17:52No.
- 17:53When Haley was on the show, I literally said, "Which muppets face do you want to sit on?"
- 17:57So that's a crazy--
- 17:59I was like, "Oh, then you said--."
- 18:01"Oh, gone so."
- 18:02He's gone so, yes.
- 18:04No, he's but the--
- 18:05The--
- 18:06Yes.
- 18:07He's not one, yes.
- 18:09So who's better at looking?
- 18:11Pete Davidson or Bill Hader?
- 18:13Oh, Pete Davidson, for sure.
- 18:15Absolutely.
- 18:16I think Pete Davidson is so hot.
- 18:18We have an episode about that, too.
- 18:21I mean, I think Pete Davidson's hot is hot.
- 18:25Looks hot because he looks like Hilt Row in my life.
- 18:28Like, maybe that's what I just want a little chaos.
- 18:31I get energy.
- 18:32But like, Bill Hader looks like he's like, "Rap, you want a hot, you know?"
- 18:35Just like--
- 18:36That's true.
- 18:37I need to be like--
- 18:38Bill Hader would make love to you.
- 18:41Well, Pete Davidson would just dig you down.
- 18:44Yeah.
- 18:45What do you think, Nicole?
- 18:47Neither.
- 18:48I should just take it your good.
- 18:51Who is later just--
- 18:53Who is your like, like, celebrity, like, hall pass person?
- 18:58Where you're like, "If I ever, it's all in sight."
- 19:01Um, Chris Maloney, for sure.
- 19:05But if we're going to go like, "RH?"
- 19:08A type of type, you can have whatever type of--
- 19:11I know.
- 19:12I know.
- 19:13"RH?"
- 19:14I don't even know, honestly.
- 19:16Okay.
- 19:17We're going to get to the end of the episode.
- 19:18We're going to see what your onsite is.
- 19:20Please do.
- 19:21I'll start researching.
- 19:22Because I know this one when I just can't.
- 19:24Can't think of foods.
- 19:25Okay, okay, wait, wait, wait, wait.
- 19:27One more show.
- 19:28One more show.
- 19:29Melissa's Macyl.
- 19:30It's so good.
- 19:31If you guys haven't been watching it, this show is just a delight.
- 19:35Every episode, it's also less season.
- 19:38And they're doing a lot of flash forwards to, like, the 80s and 90s.
- 19:41Um, the show's set in the 60s.
- 19:43I think I've talked about it in this podcast before.
- 19:46But please watch, "Marveless Mrs. Macyl."
- 19:48If you just want to smile and laugh.
- 19:51And watch some gorgeous 60s fashion.
- 19:54There you go.
- 19:56I will say you also sound like my dad there for that one.
- 20:00To see frickin' love's that show.
- 20:02It's so good.
- 20:03Every episode is just a delight.
- 20:04It's a pure delight.
- 20:05Yeah.
- 20:06Yeah.
- 20:07All right, Olivia, what have you been watching?
- 20:14So I just had my 30th birthday.
- 20:17So on Sunday.
- 20:18You're gonna be on Sunday.
- 20:19Thank you.
- 20:20I had on the oldest junky now.
- 20:2334 and just like a whole.
- 20:27And we love it.
- 20:28That was the theme of my 34th birthday.
- 20:31Yes.
- 20:32Yes.
- 20:33I didn't come up with that.
- 20:34Sean is much more creative than I am.
- 20:36So in my squalor on Sunday when I was picking myself up off the floor from a whole bottle
- 20:42of tequila.
- 20:43I watched Kung Pao enter the fist, which like, if you know me, you know that that movie is
- 20:51deeply embedded in my soul.
- 20:53Like I will just find myself going, "Woo, woo, woo, woo, woo, woo, woo."
- 20:57Like to myself.
- 20:58And so that's something about me.
- 21:01But it was amazing.
- 21:03I literally sat there with a giant chocolate cake, didn't cut it and just made it with a spoon.
- 21:09It was a beautiful, spiritual experience.
- 21:12Yes.
- 21:13A little girl.
- 21:14And then after that, I binge watched all of Queen Charlotte by Bridgerton.
- 21:20Or the Bridgerton story, whatever they're calling it.
- 21:23And I liked it.
- 21:24It was really, really good.
- 21:26They addressed like all the criticism of like, "Why are you not acknowledging race in a world where there's like black people in Regency Times?"
- 21:36And like a black queen, right?
- 21:38And so they addressed that as well as they never had a gay story in it.
- 21:43And so they had both of those in this.
- 21:45And I really, really liked that.
- 21:47Is it like a mini series?
- 21:49Yes.
- 21:50So it's six episodes.
- 21:51So if you saw Bridgerton, basically it's about the Queen in the story.
- 21:57So Queen Charlotte is her name.
- 21:59And it's the story of how her and the king fell in love.
- 22:04The main guy in it, super hot, looks like Dave Franco, but an English version.
- 22:09So yeah.
- 22:10There's a good one for you, Nicole.
- 22:13Yeah.
- 22:14Yeah, he's not a Franco, so we can like, you know, like that, we can buy that.
- 22:19Dave is a cool Franco.
- 22:21Yeah, but I feel like if your brother is James Franco, like there's some residual, like, rod coming to you, you know?
- 22:29Maybe that's a mean judgment, but I don't, I got my ears perked for him.
- 22:34But he was, he was really good.
- 22:36And like they genuinely had chemistry.
- 22:38If I feel like if you watched the first Bridgerton, which I went back and did that after I finished it, because I was like, I'm not more.
- 22:45And the original couple in Bridgerton has like no chemistry.
- 22:49And so this one was much better.
- 22:52Well, but it's that super hot guy Renee something.
- 22:55Yeah, I think we were all just like so secluded and like, horned up for a better word during COVID where we were like, this is great.
- 23:04This is amazing.
- 23:06This show is everything.
- 23:08And if you rewatch it, it's like, oh, that's probably not good.
- 23:12But Queen Charlotte was really good.
- 23:15And I really liked it.
- 23:16And the people had good chemistry.
- 23:18And then they upped the costumes.
- 23:20Like another big criticism of Bridgerton is like, they're not accurate to like the time that they're trying to be in.
- 23:27And a lot of the costumes this time around were actually good and fit for like queens and things like that.
- 23:35I never watched it.
- 23:37The only reason I would have is just because of the hotness and the sex scene.
- 23:42But maybe I'll just skip right over to this one.
- 23:45I don't know.
- 23:46Yeah, I like maybe I'll just watch a compilation of the sex scenes on YouTube.
- 23:50Also good.
- 23:51Also good.
- 23:52They're going to HBO route where they're like really showing the men's butts.
- 23:57It's like women's bodies out men's butts in.
- 24:01Losing a butt.
- 24:04Dude, when Lucifer went to Netflix and they showed his butt cheeks in that episode, I was like,
- 24:10"Lord, have mercy.
- 24:11Devil, have mercy."
- 24:13Give me those devil butts.
- 24:15We had a whole episode about that too.
- 24:17Oh my god.
- 24:18It's just a throwback at the same thing.
- 24:20I think we had a title of an episode that was just like,
- 24:24"You sexy devil or sleeping with the devil."
- 24:28I don't remember.
- 24:31Poor for me.
- 24:32You're a mom called your junkie.
- 24:33You got to.
- 24:34No, apparently.
- 24:35Apparently.
- 24:36Sorry about it.
- 24:37"Sexy British Devil Man."
- 24:39That was the name of the episode.
- 24:40Go back and listen to it.
- 24:41[Music]
- 24:46So we are huge fans of television, clearly.
- 24:51But would television exist if no woman was there to write it?
- 24:56Enter the writer's strike.
- 24:59That is going down right now.
- 25:01And that a lot of people think, "It's gonna last."
- 25:04I'm reading up to months at a time.
- 25:06I think the last time that it went on, it lasted a really long time.
- 25:10It was like months on end.
- 25:12And a lot of TV shows were impacted.
- 25:14So, interested to hear some pot takes on the writer's strike right now.
- 25:20Yeah, so November to February.
- 25:23Yeah, dude, that was a long time.
- 25:25They're saying that a lot of TV shows are being impacted already.
- 25:29SNL has already canceled its last three episodes.
- 25:33Which I was looking forward to.
- 25:34Because Pete Davidson wasn't going to be there.
- 25:37You're daddy.
- 25:38There you go.
- 25:39You love him.
- 25:40You needed him.
- 25:41You needed him.
- 25:42I needed him.
- 25:43Yeah, it's most significantly impacted up front.
- 25:46It seems like it's all the late night shows.
- 25:49But really kind of down the line.
- 25:52It's going to impact some of our favorites.
- 25:54We got yellow jackets.
- 25:56How's it dragon?
- 25:58Which, no, I need that.
- 26:00I need that back in my life.
- 26:02I know.
- 26:03I'm obsessed with yellow jackets.
- 26:05I do support the strike though.
- 26:07Like, the selfish worst of me is like, oh my god, no.
- 26:12Come on, I need my entertainment.
- 26:14Entertain me right now.
- 26:16This was the only thing keeping me on.
- 26:19Keep holding on by a thread over here.
- 26:22I'm not going to be there.
- 26:24I'm not going to be there.
- 26:26I'm not going to be there.
- 26:28I'm not going to be there.
- 26:30I'm not going to be there.
- 26:32I'm not going to be there.
- 26:34I'm not going to be there.
- 26:36I'm not going to be there.
- 26:37I'm not going to be there.
- 26:38I'm not going to be there.
- 26:39I'm not going to be there.
- 26:40I'm not going to be there.
- 26:41I'm not going to be there.
- 26:42I'm not going to be there.
- 26:43I'm not going to be there.
- 26:44I'm not going to be there.
- 26:45I'm not going to be there.
- 26:46I'm not going to be there.
- 26:47I'm not going to be there.
- 26:48I'm not going to be there.
- 26:49I'm not going to be there.
- 26:50I'm not going to be there.
- 26:51I'm not going to be there.
- 26:52I'm not going to be there.
- 26:53I'm not going to be there.
- 26:54I'm not going to be there.
- 26:55I'm not going to be there.
- 26:56I'm not going to be there.
- 26:57I'm not going to be there.
- 26:58I'm not going to be there.
- 26:59I'm not going to be there.
- 27:00I'm not going to be there.
- 27:01I'm not going to be there.
- 27:02I'm not going to be there.
- 27:03I'm not going to be there.
- 27:04I'm not going to be there.
- 27:05I'm not going to be there.
- 27:06I'm not going to be there.
- 27:07I'm not going to be there.
- 27:08I'm not going to be there.
- 27:09I'm not going to be there.
- 27:10I'm not going to be there.
- 27:11I'm not going to be there.
- 27:12I'm not going to be there.
- 27:13I'm not going to be there.
- 27:14I'm not going to be there.
- 27:15I'm not going to be there.
- 27:16I'm not going to be there.
- 27:17I'm not going to be there.
- 27:18I'm not going to be there.
- 27:19I'm not going to be there.
- 27:20I'm not going to be there.
- 27:21I'm not going to be there.
- 27:22I'm not going to be there.
- 27:23I'm not going to be there.
- 27:24I'm not going to be there.
- 27:25I'm not going to be there.
- 27:26I'm not going to be there.
- 27:27I'm not going to be there.
- 27:28I'm not going to be there.
- 27:29I'm not going to be there.
- 27:30I'm not going to be there.
- 27:31I'm not going to be there.
- 27:32I'm not going to be there.
- 27:33I'm not going to be there.
- 27:34I'm not going to be there.
- 27:35Yeah.
- 27:36Well, it's interesting, right?
- 27:37Like, you look at criticism of Hollywood right now and it's, they're always making the same
- 27:44thing over and over.
- 27:45They're just like really formulaic with their writing because as an executive, they're
- 27:50like, okay, well, we want to make something that we know is going to make money and is proven
- 27:54to work, which, you know, that isn't like a creative mindset at all.
- 28:01Then we have so many talented writers where, you know, I think eventually, like, it'll become
- 28:07so formulaic, especially if they add in this AI writing that people aren't going to be
- 28:12interested.
- 28:13Like, we're going to have so much streaming content more so than we do now that is just
- 28:19below even some of the stuff we see today, which I think quality of TV shows has really
- 28:24gone down.
- 28:25So, why did this strike start in the first place?
- 28:29So, it was kind of the instigating factor here.
- 28:32So the writers guild wanted to increase their pay for their members.
- 28:36I believe the pay was around $429 million a year, according to the WGA, and the counter-MPTP
- 28:46would run about $86 million per year.
- 28:49So, the number of writers working at the minimum pay has risen from a third to about a half.
- 28:55So, that's quite a bit of people.
- 28:5710% wise, it's 33% to 50%.
- 29:00So, I mean, that's a lot.
- 29:01And then writers for comedy writing shows and for streaming services, they have no pay protection
- 29:08and tend to get less paid in their counterparts in broadcast, which is pretty crazy to think
- 29:13about.
- 29:14I guess that's why a lot of these shows are being impacted, like the late night shows for
- 29:18sure.
- 29:19Yeah, yeah.
- 29:20Yeah, I didn't think it that way, but exactly.
- 29:23A lot of the writers previously, to make their living, they had to be making these residuals
- 29:31from their shows, right?
- 29:33But with streaming, the residuals don't really work in that way.
- 29:40So, like, residuals as a whole, as an industry, has risen.
- 29:44But when it comes to individual shows, it's dropped significantly.
- 29:49So, because of that, people are making less and less money, they're paying writers less
- 29:54and less.
- 29:55And, you know, which just dark days in the creator world.
- 29:59Oh, gosh.
- 30:00And there are so many different streaming services that I'm sure it's hard to know going
- 30:05into it, which ones are going to be profitable or not.
- 30:07Like, what was that one that lasted?
- 30:10Like, really quick.
- 30:12Quibi.
- 30:13Oh, my God.
- 30:14Quibi.
- 30:15And then that is 8 shit immediately.
- 30:17We got only Netflix is really turning a profit right now.
- 30:20So, I think going into these streaming services as they're being launched, it's kind of hard
- 30:25to tell which ones are going to be profitable, which ones aren't, and how much they can afford
- 30:29to pay the writers.
- 30:30I can't even imagine all this Quibi show.
- 30:33It's different to the live on the floor, if some cutting room right now.
- 30:37Yeah.
- 30:38The Quibi feels like a way to have a production-valued TikTok.
- 30:42Or, I guess, it's more Snapchat.
- 30:44Like, you know, the Snapchat feature page.
- 30:47That's like what Quibi just feels like, which is.
- 30:50Yeah.
- 30:51I'll try to make TikToks and then I'll post them.
- 30:55I'll be like, that was really cute.
- 30:56And then I'll look at other people's TikToks.
- 30:58I'm like, why the fuck do I even try?
- 31:00Like, they have special effects in their TikToks.
- 31:04And I'm in here like a selfie of myself.
- 31:08But also too, during this whole thing, Drew Barrymore was supposed to host MTV, booby
- 31:13and TV wars.
- 31:14And three days before the award show was supposed to happen, she came out and said that she was
- 31:18dropping out as the host because she's in support of this strike.
- 31:22And so I did tune in because I wanted to try to see how they were going to go about if
- 31:26they got a new post because I didn't see them announce anything about getting a new
- 31:29host or something like that.
- 31:31It was extremely weird.
- 31:32I did not like the format at all.
- 31:35Nobody was there.
- 31:37It was not live.
- 31:38I mean, it was, but it wasn't.
- 31:39Like, there was no audience.
- 31:40I should say everyone was at home and they already, the winner already had the award.
- 31:44So I turned it on when Jennifer Coolidge won.
- 31:46And she was like in her apartment holding the award already.
- 31:49And I was like, okay, like maybe she was just sick or something.
- 31:51Couldn't make it filming something.
- 31:53I don't know, white lotus.
- 31:54Who knows.
- 31:55And it was just really weird.
- 31:58They kept showing throwback images and footage of previous award shows.
- 32:02Why would anyone want to watch that?
- 32:04I feel like no.
- 32:05MTV did that over COVID too.
- 32:08Yeah.
- 32:09And Gaga and Ariana performed.
- 32:11And I mean, I loved that whole show because it was basically like a lady, Gaga, chromatic,
- 32:16a commercial.
- 32:17She won like four before.
- 32:18It's yet all these different outfit.
- 32:20But everyone was wearing masks and everyone else was screaming.
- 32:22And the pandemic, Golden Globes did that too.
- 32:25It was just like everybody's at home.
- 32:27Yeah, she's the least kind of stuff we get when people don't get paid.
- 32:33Yeah.
- 32:34Mm-hmm.
- 32:35But we love Drew Bayer, Mariam.
- 32:36She's for the people.
- 32:37Yeah.
- 32:38She's an icon.
- 32:39Oh my god.
- 32:40She's so pure.
- 32:41She is so pure.
- 32:42She is so pure.
- 32:43She's the rain.
- 32:44Did you guys see her interview with Brook Shields?
- 32:47No.
- 32:48Oh my god, you need to watch it.
- 32:50Also, back to TV we're watching.
- 32:52If you haven't watched the Crybaby documentary or Pretty Baby Crybaby.
- 32:56I haven't seen you watch that.
- 32:57Pretty baby, don't get on my list.
- 33:00It is so good.
- 33:01It is so disturbing what we were doing to this little girl.
- 33:06And like-
- 33:07Yeah, she was like 11 or 12 and like-
- 33:10Do you think sex happens, right?
- 33:12Yeah.
- 33:13Oh.
- 33:14Yeah.
- 33:15I'm like, no, when there were so messed up, like everyone's like, why are kids having sex
- 33:18so young?
- 33:19And it's like, you are putting this stuff on the TV in the 80s.
- 33:21What are you talking about?
- 33:24But no, it's really, really crazy.
- 33:26Because she also put out a book as well.
- 33:28I think personally as like an objective person, I think she gives her mother a lot of grace
- 33:35that I probably would not extend to her, but she is her mother.
- 33:41So-
- 33:42Those showbiz moms, man.
- 33:44Yeah, in both the book and in the documentary, she has a really hard time like condemning her
- 33:49mother's actions.
- 33:51But what was really interesting in the Drew Barrymore interview is she really kind of changes
- 33:55that stance and like really does speak out about it.
- 33:58Because I mean, Drew Barrymore and Brooke Shields have such a similar like life story where
- 34:04they were like young Lola who was getting taken to like these clubs at like seven years old.
- 34:12I read Drew Barrymore's book.
- 34:14I think it's called Little Girl Lost.
- 34:16And she was taken like, Studio 54, is that what it was called?
- 34:22She was doing cocaine at nine years old.
- 34:24That's insane.
- 34:25You know, my God, the way that she turned out to be is lovely and supportive as she is now.
- 34:33Have you ever seen any of the pictures of her in the club?
- 34:36It's freaking nuts.
- 34:37Yeah.
- 34:38You're like, you look like you like she looks like she's straight out of ET.
- 34:43Like, if I was fucked up in a club and I just saw the little child there, I'd be like,
- 34:50why is happening?
- 34:51Literally.
- 34:52Literally.
- 34:53I don't freak out.
- 34:54Literally.
- 34:55I don't freak out.
- 34:56I'm literally like, wait, like I need to go home.
- 34:59I'm seeing ET right now.
- 35:02And it's like, no, that's just actually Drew Barrymore over there.
- 35:06Is that my brain, Natch?
- 35:08Child.
- 35:09No, it's like when we were at the pool party for your birthday and somebody had two kids in
- 35:13the pool.
- 35:14Yeah.
- 35:15We're here.
- 35:16We're here.
- 35:17I thought it was.
- 35:18Don't bring your children to the casino pool with a DJ.
- 35:22Yeah.
- 35:23Like, there's a DJ here.
- 35:25Yeah.
- 35:26Pick a different dance track.
- 35:27I'll go get a million resorts.
- 35:30So we love the gaze.
- 35:32Olivia is a welcome rash.
- 35:35We love you very much.
- 35:36Bill Hader has big dick energy.
- 35:39Don't give your nine year old cocaine and you support the writers right.
- 35:43Did I forget anything?
- 35:45Yeah.
- 35:46And watch Pretty Baby.
- 35:48Because it's a good story.
- 35:50And Jesus would be welcome on the Real Housewives of New Jersey because he's looked
- 35:54at Jesus.
- 35:55Jesus be flipping tables.
- 35:57Yes, if I Jesus.
- 35:58And who drank wine?
- 36:00And he drank wine.
- 36:01Do he shop to the reunion and he'd be like that water bottle?
- 36:04Wine.
- 36:05Please don't stop listening to my family.
- 36:12So Olivia, what did you think about your first episode of Pop Culture Jackie Podcast?
- 36:16Well, I'm glad you guys didn't bite.
- 36:19You know, hopefully you let me come back next week.
- 36:21But I do that when I'm a person.
- 36:24That's true.
- 36:25You haven't recorded it in person with Nicole yet.
- 36:27Tell me what the good time.
- 36:31I'm going to be the pervy host.
- 36:34That's going to be the problem.
- 36:36That role has already been taken.
- 36:38No.
- 36:39No.
- 36:40But yeah, I'm excited.
- 36:44I'll have to next time school you on the free band movement so you guys can join in giving
- 36:51him his freedom just like we did for Britney.
- 36:53Absolutely.
- 36:54Let's do it.
- 36:55I'm going to hear all about that.
