- 0:04Good morning. This is the Sacramento Brief, your
- 0:08weekday roundup of overnight headlines and what's
- 0:11ahead across the city. I'm Carol. It's Friday,
- 0:15July 31st, 2026. Let's get you caught up. If
- 0:20you are planning a late night visit to Old Sacramento
- 0:22this weekend, expect some major changes. Following
- 0:25last Saturday's stabbing that left five people
- 0:28hospitalized, Sacramento officials are introducing
- 0:30a new traffic restriction designed to make the
- 0:33waterfront a safer place during the busiest late
- 0:36night hours. Beginning this weekend, vehicle
- 0:39access into much of Old Sacramento will be restricted
- 0:42after 10 p .m. every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
- 0:46night. Drivers will still have access to 2nd
- 0:50Street from Capitol Mall and I Street, but traffic
- 0:53beyond that point, including Front Street and
- 0:56the Firehouse Alley, will be closed through traffic.
- 1:00The Downtown Sacramento Partnership and Sacramento
- 1:02Police developed the plan after an increase in
- 1:07late -night disturbances, culminating in last
- 1:09weekend's violence. Two men, ages 18 and 19,
- 1:13have since been arrested in connection with the
- 1:16stabbing. Downtown Sacramento Partnership Executive
- 1:19Director Michael Ault called the new traffic
- 1:22plan a temporary cooling period, saying the goal
- 1:25is to restore a sense of safety while keeping
- 1:28the waterfront welcoming for visitors. Pedestrians
- 1:31will still have full access to Old Sacramento,
- 1:34and vehicles already parked inside the restricted
- 1:37area will still be allowed to leave after 10
- 1:39p .m. Officials also say Sacramento's juvenile
- 1:43curfew which prohibits anyone under 18 from being
- 1:47in public after 10 p .m. without a parent or
- 1:49guardian will continue to be strictly enforced.
- 1:53Local business owners have welcomed the changes
- 1:56saying fewer vehicles gathering late at night
- 1:59should help reduce crime, cut down on noise and
- 2:02create a safer environment for customers and
- 2:05employees alike. Related update, both directions
- 2:12of Interstate 5 through downtown Sacramento have
- 2:16reopened after a temporary shutdown late last
- 2:18night during a mental health emergency. The closure
- 2:22caused major traffic delays while officers responded,
- 2:25but California Highway Patrol says all lanes
- 2:28are now reopened. In weather, this weekend's
- 2:33forecast, summer isn't letting up just yet. Friday
- 2:37will be sunny and hot with a high near 100, cooling
- 2:40to around 62 overnight. Saturday, we're looking
- 2:43at heat up a little bit more with a high near
- 2:45102. And Sunday, expect the hottest day of the
- 2:48weekend with temperatures reaching about 104
- 2:50under mostly sunny skies. So again, remember,
