- 0:02A listener production.
- 0:04Welcome to the Motorsport Brief.
- 0:06A star of the future who's now playing against the big names and a champion who's off to battle some of the best in the world.
- 0:15G'day everybody, Rusty here.
- 0:16Shortly to Harry Bates, who's just won Rally Queensland, the opening round of the Australian Rally Championship.
- 0:21And you're about to meet Jackson Long, who impressed for all sorts of reasons on the roads around Gympie as he steps up to Escoda with the expanded Pedder's team.
- 0:31He was tested along the way, but you know what?
- 0:33His approach is so professional at such a young age, it's like he's meant to be there.
- 0:38A quick shout out for some recent eps that you might enjoy listening to as well.
- 0:42AFL legend Brad Johnson, whose son Jack has parked the footy boots and brought the family into motorsports.
- 0:48They're loving it.
- 0:49Tabitha Ambrose on her own racing journey with the love and support of her famous dad, plus the weight of the surname.
- 0:56Respect to journo, Stuart Bell dropped in to talk about his new book on the brutality of F1.
- 1:01And we released a two-part feature ep with James Courtney where he candidly talks about his private battle with ADHD, a vivid memory of the weekend he won the Supercars Championship in 2010, and some frightening detail on his Jaguar F1 crash at Monza.
- 1:15That is a gripping story, that.
- 1:17Just before we get into our first guest, a little apology from me.
- 1:22In the haste to record these at the rally and again later online, I must have had some of the settings wrong.
- 1:27So the quality audio experience that we try to aim for isn't quite up to performance.
- 1:33my standards.
- 1:33That's on me.
- 1:35I'm grateful to Link, Darcy, Joel, and everyone in the Garage team for tuning it as best they can.
- 1:40Jackson's interview is fine.
- 1:42My audio and Harry's needed a little bit of work, but I'm a believer not in using AI for that stuff or overdoing it with the tools that we have to iron out some things.
- 1:53That's because I want it to be
- 1:54the authentic voices and real rapport.
- 1:57I've let some slightly subpar audio through on this occasion, and that is because both guests have some good things to say.
- 2:05First up to Jackson, who at 18 years of age, sure grabbed our attention at the weekend as he makes his professional career in Raleigh his sole focus now.
- 2:14Jackson Long, welcome, mate.
- 2:16G'day, Rusty.
- 2:16Thank you so much for having me.
- 2:18Can we start with a little debrief of the weekend?
- 2:20Lots of positives, maybe a little setback towards the end as well because of a diff issue, but on balance, really good.
- 2:26Oh, definitely.
- 2:27It was more than I could have asked for out of the weekend.
- 2:30We sort of basically had no idea where we would...
- 2:33We had a little idea from the pre-event Bathurst rally from the New South Wales State Championship that we did, where we would basically sit.
- 2:40But yeah, going into Queensland, we just wanted to see what our pace would be like so I know where the steps need to be to get to that point.
- 2:48But to be honest, to be reasonably close early on was really cool.
- 2:53With the lead-up that you've had, did you come in with a little personal objective for the weekend and what you might like to achieve?
- 3:00Yeah, I definitely just was focusing on trying to finish and also just understanding that pace and trying to show a little bit of promise just to...
- 3:11feel comfortable and not make any errors.
- 3:13And I think we did a really good job of that.
- 3:15Dad and I are not making any mistakes.
- 3:17The car was pretty much straight up until Sunday, which wasn't really a fault of my own or dad's.
- 3:24So yeah, we're just happy with how it all went.
- 3:27Is the diff okay?
- 3:28You managed to limp it to the finish, which was great, but it must have been a bit heartbreaking there with a couple of stages to go.
- 3:34Yeah, definitely.
- 3:35It was looking like a good result.
- 3:37It would have been sort of two fourths.
- 3:40But yeah, I think personally that the situation panned out the best way that it could have.
- 3:46So yeah, we came out of the long stage, Glastonbury, over 20 kilometers and probably my favorite stage, one of my favorite of the year.
- 3:54And yeah, I had a really good time and basically came across the finish line and went to put it back into road mode and
- 4:00All of a sudden got a light on my dash saying diff temperature and it was extremely high.
- 4:05And then, yeah, sort of took me a couple of seconds to realise, look in the rear view mirror and see that there was a massive fire coming out of the back of the car, which is definitely not what you want.
- 4:13And sort of, yeah, took a few years off my life thinking that the whole year was going to basically go up in flames.
- 4:19And I saw it all sort of flash before my eyes.
- 4:21But luckily we were able to quickly get it out and basically diagnosed it as a...
- 4:27A rock had sort of punctured the oil cooler for the diff and sprayed diff oil everywhere all over the exhaust and lit the bumper on fire.
- 4:36And so the actual diff is fine by the looks of it.
- 4:39We're not 100% sure yet, but that's what it looks like.
- 4:42And so, yeah, it's probably the best it could have been.
- 4:45It's just a cooler and some body panels and some sensors and those sort of things.
- 4:48But the actual diff can basically run on no oil for hundreds of kilometres.
- 4:53They're sort of built like a tank, so...
- 4:56So yeah, that's pretty good.
- 4:57And we managed to make it through the last two stages, just transporting through to get that result, which was, I think, an eighth for the second heat and then sixth overall for the event.
- 5:06Well played.
- 5:07Can we start with the backstory or get into, I guess you could say, a backstory on how this all came together?
- 5:12I think, if I'm right, there were maybe some discussions around the Gippsland event last year and then it took off from there.
- 5:19Just tell us a bit more about it.
- 5:21Yeah, well, it was quite an interesting process, I'd say.
- 5:25I went and talked to Scott when we sort of purchased the car and was looking for just basically some advice and some coaching or something like that.
- 5:35Just wanted him to come sit in the car at some point.
- 5:38And yeah, over the next few months, it sort of transpired that Scott was looking for someone to join him in the team next year and to make a two-car outfit.
- 5:47And so, yeah, I basically got an email explaining everything that the sort of deal entailed.
- 5:56And that was really awesome to receive something.
- 5:59And he wanted to make it be like the sort of contracts that he received when he was doing factory stuff in the 2000s.
- 6:05And really, because we're trying to be a factory team essentially in the way that we run.
- 6:10And so that was a cool way to get an introduction to the more professional side of motorsport.
- 6:16I've worked with Dean Herridge in a broadcast dance, as you know.
- 6:19He's team boss there.
- 6:20What's he been like from a guidance perspective?
- 6:23He's very good with that side of what he brings to it, isn't he?
- 6:27Oh, definitely.
- 6:27And I think on Sunday, he really proved that.
- 6:30He happened to be right at the stop control of that stage, the Glastonbury that we had the fire on.
- 6:36He was right there.
- 6:37So he...
- 6:39calmed me down because I was a little bit flustered and basically made me feel a lot better about the situation and actually convinced us to keep going, which was cool.
- 6:48And I think it was definitely the right decision for the team and for points.
- 6:51But yeah, he's always in the service park and in our tent always coming up to me and asking where my mindset is and just trying to get that strategy for, you know, what approach we're going to take and
- 7:02And the way he is so professional about all of our team meetings and everything, it feels like a proper race team, which I think is a cool thing to be a part of.
- 7:12Definitely.
- 7:13Your first run, I think, proper in the car was at Tolly Chalice's Farm there in the West.
- 7:19As a young, aspiring rally driver, what was that experience like?
- 7:24Have you got a memory?
- 7:25Yeah.
- 7:25Oh, yeah.
- 7:26It's extremely impressive.
- 7:28You get in the car and it's pretty intimidating.
- 7:32You know that there's such a high bar of what the car can do and you don't think you're going to be anywhere near it.
- 7:37And we sort of got in and did a few laps and I was just pretty much blown away by the capabilities.
- 7:43You can just drive over anything.
- 7:45You can just stop on a dime.
- 7:47And the car is so much fun to drive and it really lets you do what you want to do as a driver.
- 7:53And then, yeah, as we built up that pace, Scott, yeah, came and sit with me and made me feel sort of pretty surprised because he basically said that we're at a good level and that it was, you know, I had some of the skills there to be able to be quick in the car.
- 8:08And so, yeah, to be that early on to get encouragement from Scott was great.
- 8:12But yeah, that's...
- 8:12The car, every time I drive it, I just have a massive smile on my face.
- 8:16I mean, coming out of Saturday into that night stage around the town was just the biggest smile I've ever had.
- 8:24And then Sunday was somehow built on that as well.
- 8:27And even though there was the disappointment, I still think it was probably the most fun day of rallying I've ever done on that Sunday.
- 8:33So, yeah.
- 8:34Great perspective.
- 8:35Romain, who looks after the cars, paid you to me on the quiet, a very nice compliment too about the empathy that you have with the car and the way that you use the sequential shifter, for example.
- 8:47So, I mean, it seems already like a lot of the key stuff is coming together nicely for you.
- 8:52You get to work with your dad too in the co-driver suite.
- 8:56You've done that for a little while now.
- 8:58But I walked into Service Park there maybe on Sunday at about lunch
- 9:04Yeah, well, it's been a bit of a learning curve for me and for Dad in terms of the pace.
- 9:10Obviously, we're going a hell of a lot quicker, and I had a lot of detail for my previous cars, the RS and the WX Challenge car that we drove, the two Subarus, and you really need detailed notes to know when you can be 100% on the throttle in something that's low-powered.
- 9:26So I had tons of detail, and coming into this rally, we...
- 9:30Yeah, tried to cut it down, but we didn't sort of cut it down enough.
- 9:33So yeah, we were in that midday service trying to get some detail out just because dad just physically couldn't get through it and no one could.
- 9:39It doesn't matter how good a co-driver you are.
- 9:41If there's 10 descriptions on one corner, you're just not going to be able to do it.
- 9:45And then the main detail of...
- 9:48what numbers are and how tight the corner is is more important than that.
- 9:52So we're just trying to, and it will be a process after this rally to really decide what the crucial details are.
- 9:59But yeah, Dad did an amazing job.
- 10:01And as soon as we made those changes, it was absolutely perfect.
- 10:05So yeah, I couldn't be more proud of Dad and how we approached the pace notes sort of coming into this rally.
- 10:12You had your mum there too.
- 10:13I think she was a bit nervous when I spotted her at one point.
- 10:15She showed me this beautiful picture of you in a booster seat, I think, in the lounge room at home with like a Ferrari race suit on and a rally helmet from a very young age.
- 10:24You have dreamt of this for a long time, haven't you?
- 10:27I've been watching rallying since I was...
- 10:29I don't even know, four, five.
- 10:31I've been driving racing games, which is sort of my start and we'll talk about probably in a bit, since I was, yeah, probably about five years old as well.
- 10:40And I remember spectating this event, Queensland in Gympie, in about 2014 when, funnily enough, Scott won it in the Clio.
- 10:48And I remember seeing all the S2000 cars and being there with Dad and watching him compete.
- 10:52And so it's been my whole life has been leading up to this moment
- 10:59pay off the way it did.
- 11:01You know, people might go, oh, you know, we were fourth, you know, but it was as good as we could have done.
- 11:06It impressed myself.
- 11:08And I think it was more about the pace and the consistency.
- 11:11And I think to be even in the same sphere as the top three guys, it was definitely amazing.
- 11:17That is a great perspective, and I'm pleased you're taking that away from Queensland into WA, because that's exactly how many of us feel too.
- 11:24You talked about the sim there a moment ago.
- 11:25We think of circuit racing people, Shane Van Gisbergen, Max Verstappen, and many others, using those systems a lot, not just at racing level, but privately too.
- 11:35But we don't often see it used as a tool in rallying, but you have made it a tool, and it seems to work for you.
- 11:42Yeah, well, I've been using it for like 14 years and every weekend after school when I should be doing homework maybe, but definitely on weekends, I get back from sport and be straight away on the sim.
- 11:56I wouldn't be doing any debriefing from my soccer game.
- 11:59I'd be straight on the sim.
- 12:00But yeah, I've been using it for a very long time and it's gotten progressively better.
- 12:05And up until recently, I sort of...
- 12:07I'd been wanting something more professional, a more professional setup.
- 12:11I'd sort of just been using a dining room chair and a stand from 10 years ago.
- 12:16And it was a little bit dodgy, but I made it work and it's definitely contributed to the reasonably swift start we've made in Rallying.
- 12:24Like we've progressed fairly quickly.
- 12:27But yeah, now I've got a more professional setup thanks to my sponsor, SimRigs in Melbourne.
- 12:32Excellent.
- 12:32And, yeah, I've been using it.
- 12:35Even leading into the rally, I basically put it together.
- 12:37I had it for one night, and I reckon I spent six hours straight on it before we left for the rally in the morning.
- 12:44I was a bit tired on the drive up.
- 12:47But, yeah, I think it's definitely a tool that people need to look at more often.
- 12:51And I think if anything, our pace on the weekend being so...
- 12:57close so quickly in a car like that, which is normally something that takes a fair while to master, goes to show that maybe the sim preparation is something that can get you to that point quite quickly.
- 13:11And the skills of just being able to react that quickly is something that you can get off the sim.
- 13:17The time spent instead of doing homework hasn't been wasted, Jackson.
- 13:20And I think the games are a little bit less arcadey now.
- 13:23So all of that together is clearly a good thing for you.
- 13:27You've paused the thought of a uni degree in agriculture for now.
- 13:31The focus is fully on Raleigh.
- 13:35Are you doing anything else outside the car to sort of immerse yourself in this?
- 13:39I think you've been working at Raleigh School, for example, and so on.
- 13:41Yeah, yeah.
- 13:42I love that job.
- 13:43And any time in a rally car is great.
- 13:45They're pretty basic rally cars, but it is a lot of fun and mainly just showing the public the sport that I love and getting people excited about rallying.
- 13:53And it's always cool when I've had times when I've had a customer at rally school and then I actually see them at the rally on the weekend and they said they were going to watch and they'd go out and watch.
- 14:00And I think that's really cool.
- 14:02And then, yeah, so starting to do some work around power play in Sydney, which is
- 14:06Glenn McNeil's business.
- 14:08Lots of rallying people in that.
- 14:10So that's really cool.
- 14:11I'm excited to start that.
- 14:13There's a lot going on.
- 14:13I'm trying to fill up my time, but I'm sure a lot of the next few weeks is going to be watching on board and reliving the moments.
- 14:21And yeah, so I'm pretty happy.
- 14:23You should be.
- 14:24Your goal is to do it professionally and to go overseas.
- 14:26I know.
- 14:26Congrats on a really impressive start to this next phase of your journey, your adventure.
- 14:33Thank you for coming on today, Jackson, and go well in WA next month.
- 14:36Thanks, Rusty.
- 14:37We are not done yet on this set of the short cast.
- 14:40Multiple Australian champion Harry Bates joins us on the other side of this.
- 14:45You're listening to the Motorsport Brief.
- 14:47We have also been building the Rusty's Garage YouTube channel, gradually putting a back catalogue together there.
- 14:53Our next guest has been on a few times for our trademark audio pods and after his brilliant performance at the opening round of the 2026 E-Road Australian Rally Championship, it is a good excuse to get him back on.
- 15:04Hello, Harry Bates.
- 15:05Hello.
- 15:05Hello, Rusty.
- 15:06How are you?
- 15:06Congratulations.
- 15:07You said you felt like you were in a groove.
- 15:10What kind of helped you settle in?
- 15:13Because the road position in the end didn't seem to affect you too much.
- 15:17Yeah, look, I would say Coral and I got into a really nice groove from probably Stage 2 on Saturday.
- 15:23Stage 1 was the usual, I guess,
- 15:26pre-season nerves, first stage of the season, wanted to get underway cleanly.
- 15:30But for sure, we just got into a groove.
- 15:32And I think set-up-wise, we went in a good direction before the event with the car.
- 15:37And, you know, the team were brilliant at giving us a good car for the weekend.
- 15:43So everything kind of clicked.
- 15:45As you just pointed out, we had car one on the road on Saturday and car three on the road on Sunday.
- 15:51Either way, we were able to sort of make the most of the row position.
- 15:54Dust was a bit of an issue on Sunday for us from Guthrie, but we were still able to sort of fight through and get good results.
- 16:03So I'm over the moon.
- 16:04It's the perfect way to start the season.
- 16:06You're about to jet out to Portugal.
- 16:07Tell us more about this awesome adventure.
- 16:09And when you started to stitch this plan together...
- 16:12Yeah, I leave in six days to head off to Portugal.
- 16:16So it's round five of the World Rally Championship and really looking forward to the opportunity.
- 16:21I've never done a rally in Europe before.
- 16:24That's one of the goals of mine is to actually compete over there and try and wave the Aussie flag on that side of the world where rallying is obviously massive.
- 16:34It started to come together earlier this year.
- 16:37I managed to find a car and a team that were able to run me and had some positive conversations with the team at Toyota Australia who have always been a massive support of mine throughout really my whole career.
- 16:51And they were very keen to see me take that next step if I could.
- 16:56Yeah, it sort of all came together in the end a little bit last minute, but very excited to be going over.
- 17:02Different co-driver for this mission.
- 17:05He's very familiar with the team and he's had some success in the United States too.
- 17:08Yeah, that's right.
- 17:09I'm running with Keaton Williams.
- 17:11He's a pub.
- 17:12He's running with SRT, the team I'm running with this year, in quite a few events.
- 17:17So that was one of the sort of
- 17:19Benefits of getting him is he already knows the team.
- 17:22He's also competed in Portugal before, which is very helpful for a newbie like me.
- 17:27He himself is a four-time American rally champion with Brandon Semenyuk in the Subaru factory team over there.
- 17:34He's actually teammates over there with Australian Rhiannon Gelsimino.
- 17:38So there's always lots of connections in the motorsport world, as you know.
- 17:42Lewis has been to this event before, your brother, and I think your dad said to me that he's going to go with you on this mission.
- 17:48Scott Petter, your rival in the Australian Championships, competed there before.
- 17:51Have they been good for a little bit of advice, tips, anything in the lead-up?
- 17:55Yeah, absolutely.
- 17:57Lewis competed there two years ago.
- 17:59I went over and worked for him, helped him with onboards and just being the sort of gopher on the ground.
- 18:04He's returning the favour for me this year.
- 18:07Him having done the event before has been a massive help to me because, of course, he gained a lot of experience on the roads.
- 18:15He's got a lot of things that he knows to look out for, which he's been sharing with me.
- 18:20Likewise, Scott Petter has done Portugal a couple of times.
- 18:23He was very successful there in 2016, managed to win a few stages in WRC2.
- 18:28So, leaning on him for advice has also been really beneficial.
- 18:32Yeah.
- 18:33Yeah, the irony of the podium at Rally Queensland on the weekend was that I was the only one who hasn't done Rally Portugal of the Rally Queensland podium.
- 18:41So I'm happy that that's going to change in a couple of weeks.
- 18:45You got special permission from Toyota to go and do the WRC round in New Zealand back in 2022.
- 18:50How much did that sort of experience perhaps open your eyes, wet your appetite?
- 18:56And if you don't mind, share a story about catching up with Greg Murphy at the end of that rally.
- 19:00And that chat is etched in your memory.
- 19:03I think it's perhaps been a bit of a fire starter for this one, hasn't it?
- 19:06Yeah, I competed at Rally New Zealand in 2022.
- 19:08It was fabulous that the WRC was able to go back to New Zealand.
- 19:13It's a shame that it was a one-off, but I'm very grateful to have been able to go over there and compete in that rally.
- 19:17And I competed in a Skoda.
- 19:20It was the first time I'd driven a Skoda before.
- 19:23And it was also a deal that, well, car-wise, the car arrived quite late.
- 19:29So I didn't get enough testing in the car before the event.
- 19:33So I was quite frustrated because we were able to put together some really good stage times, but not until the end of the rally.
- 19:39So we sort of gradually got quicker over the course of the event, but unfortunately just didn't quite get on the pace early enough.
- 19:45And it was actually at the finish of the rally, we were in sort of a holding area and Murph was there chatting to me and he could tell how disappointed I was with the whole weekend and how it went.
- 19:57And he just said to me,
- 19:58you're just disappointed because you think this is your one opportunity.
- 20:02He said, that's complete rubbish.
- 20:03You're 26 years old or whatever I was at the time, and you've got your whole career ahead of you.
- 20:09You'll find a way to do more.
- 20:12So that's been in the back of my mind ever since.
- 20:14I've really wanted to get back into the WRC since just to see –
- 20:19what I can actually do.
- 20:20And, you know, this time I'm doing it in the Toyota GRS Rally 2, same car as I compete in here.
- 20:25So that familiarity and so on is already there.
- 20:29You'll get settled early enough as well, nice and acclimatised, and you'll do some good recce in the lead-up by the sounds of things.
- 20:35Just share a bit of the details there if you can.
- 20:37Yeah, look, WRC week is a big week.
- 20:40So our pre-event test is on the Sunday prior to the rally.
- 20:43And then we actually begin recce from first thing Monday morning.
- 20:47So three days of reconnaissance.
- 20:49The event's quite large in terms of it's spread across the country.
- 20:52So there's a lot of driving around the country to get the recce done.
- 20:56And then the event itself starts on the Thursday and it's a four-day rally.
- 20:59So...
- 21:00It's a big week and I fly home to Australia on the Monday, immediately after the rally.
- 21:06I reckon I'll be able to do the full 24 hours of sleep on the way home.
- 21:11WRC2 has such a depth of talent right now.
- 21:14Is that both exciting, maybe a little nerve-wracking in the same breath?
- 21:17Yeah, it's probably the most competitive championship in the world at the moment when you look at the depth and the number of people that have been winning stages.
- 21:23Taylor Gill, another Australian, won a stage at the most recent round in Croatia, which was really exciting.
- 21:30Hayden Patton also managed to get a podium at that rally.
- 21:33So it's cool that we've already got a couple of people flying the flag for this side of the world.
- 21:37But to be going over to Portugal...
- 21:40what is the biggest rally in the world.
- 21:42And to be up against the depth of competition I am is something that really excites me, to be honest.
- 21:48There's 16 guys, honestly, on the entry list that I have looked at over the years as top, top drivers who I would love to compete against.
- 21:57And now I get to compete against all of them at once.
- 22:00Just as we wrap this up, while you and I were in Queensland, your cousin Zach Bates was at the end of the second leg of the Kiwi Adventure for supercars over there.
- 22:09Were you keeping an eye on him, perhaps checking in, seeing how he was going?
- 22:12And I feel like things are starting to click there.
- 22:15Yeah, it's difficult to keep an eye on him when I'm in a rally as well, but definitely was getting reports off Dad at each of the services at the rally.
- 22:22But he had a good weekend in Christchurch, I think.
- 22:25Zach's been improving with each round, but Christchurch, to me, being a new track...
- 22:30was a bit of a leveler for the rookies and a few of the rookies were able to put in some really good performances and obviously I'm biased but I think Zach's performances on the weekend were good because he was able to move forward in most of his races and probably unlock something there that he's been searching for so I'm really excited for him that the trajectory is going up for the season I caught up with him for coffee yesterday actually you know we both live here in Canberra so I'm
- 22:55We see each other as often as we can, and he was pretty stoked with his work end.
- 22:59So it's a big thing for a rookie to go into this category.
- 23:02It's a massively competitive category, supercars, but he's doing well.
- 23:07He's got more than green shoots happening there, which is fantastic.
- 23:09Congratulations, Harry.
- 23:10I'm winning round one of the ARC, and go well in Portugal.
- 23:14Thanks for asking.
- 23:16That is it for today.
- 23:17Keep an eye out for our next feature episode with Kiwi Racing Royalty, Kenny Smith.
- 23:22I spent several hours with him at his workshop at Hampton Downs.
- 23:25He is 84 and he's still racing and he's been doing that since 1958.
- 23:30Kenny has competed against all sorts of legends.
- 23:33Socialise with them too.
- 23:34There's
- 23:35a fun yarn about waking up with his feet painted silver and holding up some events because he was putting a bet on the horses at the time and he wanted to see how it went you will love that i sure did we'll release that in the days ahead bye for now everyone
