Metallica – Enter Sandman | Song Meaning Explained #67
The original lyrics were about a baby dying in its crib. The drummer didn't know what the Sandman was. The riff was the very first one the guitarist had ever written. And the US military later used this song to psychologically torture prisoners.
This episode breaks down the full story behind Enter Sandman, including the infant death lyric that got scrapped, the 50 drum takes nobody talks about, why James Hetfield nearly exploded when his producer criticized his writing, and how the best-selling album of the Soundscan era almost had completely different words.
