- 0:00Speaker 1: I am very nearly an empty nester. Yes, Festus ten
- 0:06Speaker 1: years ago, out gone doing his thing.
- 0:09Speaker 2: You know, if you're an empty nester, you need to
- 0:11Speaker 2: get more eggs. I don't have any more eggs. My
- 0:15Speaker 2: eggs are gone. Jonesy my daughter, my middle child up
- 0:22Speaker 2: out gone. And Mohammed, my youngest is a senior in
- 0:28Speaker 2: high school and graduating this year.
- 0:31Speaker 3: He'll never leave home.
- 0:32Speaker 1: No, no, he'll he's not home now. I never see him.
- 0:38Speaker 1: But I feel kind of bad for Mohammed because I've
- 0:42Speaker 1: noticed that my husband and I are are we are
- 0:49Speaker 1: overparenting him now that he's the last way.
- 0:51Speaker 4: Home, he's the only one.
- 0:52Speaker 3: What do you mean by overparenting, Well.
- 0:56Speaker 1: We have a tendency to knock on his door. Mohammed. Yeah, Okay, today,
- 1:01Speaker 1: I'm gonna need you to, you know, take the dogs
- 1:04Speaker 1: for a walk and pick up your room and uh
- 1:08Speaker 1: and empty the dishwasher or whatever, and okay and okay,
- 1:12Speaker 1: and then and then I go do something, and then
- 1:14Speaker 1: Joe comes downstairs and knocks on Mohammed's door. Mohammed, I'm
- 1:18Speaker 1: gonna need you to take the dogs for a walk.
- 1:20Speaker 3: And we need to coordinate, that's all.
- 1:22Speaker 5: Just coordinate this poor kid gets double teamed, that poor guy.
- 1:27Speaker 1: And so we we have come up with a safe
- 1:30Speaker 1: word because almost every day there is something like, yeah,
- 1:36Speaker 1: Dad was just in here. We just we were just
- 1:38Speaker 1: talking about that. I know I need to do X
- 1:40Speaker 1: y Z thing. Yeah mom was just here. So so
- 1:43Speaker 1: we have come up.
- 1:43Speaker 3: With a safe Let me guess ovulate.
- 1:47Speaker 1: No, it's Pellegrino.
- 1:50Speaker 3: Oh okay.
- 1:51Speaker 1: There was a Pellegrino bottle close by when we were
- 1:54Speaker 1: discussing this, because Joe and I were like feeling bad,
- 1:56Speaker 1: like he's not here much longer and we don't want
- 1:59Speaker 1: to irritate the all out of him for the last
- 2:01Speaker 1: couple of months.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Said, that's so hawful to be to have to say, yeah,
- 2:06Speaker 2: I know dad.
- 2:07Speaker 3: Mom just told me that. Okay, thanks.
- 2:08Speaker 1: So I got a text from Joe this morning because
- 2:11Speaker 1: Joe Joe wasn't home last night. He was up at
- 2:14Speaker 1: the farm, okay, and he said, uh uh, Mohammed has
- 2:18Speaker 1: an instruction. I gave Mohammed instructions this morning and he
- 2:21Speaker 1: didn't even tell me to Pellegrino. I said he should have.
- 2:25Speaker 1: I talked to him twice last night and I called
- 2:27Speaker 1: him this morning. We're all telling him, well, he's so
- 2:32Speaker 1: patient with us. He's not like, ah, they already heard
- 2:36Speaker 1: this three times. He's like, yes, I will, I'll do
- 2:39Speaker 1: X y Z. And it's not like he doesn't do
- 2:41Speaker 1: the things that we ask. So we have to keep
- 2:43Speaker 1: asking him over and over.
- 2:45Speaker 2: But see, here's what I get. I say, I say
- 2:48Speaker 2: things like, uh, what what was the earthquake? Like was
- 2:53Speaker 2: an earthquake?
- 2:57Speaker 1: You get no details, no.
- 2:58Speaker 3: No details about anything.
- 3:01Speaker 1: I am. I am shocked that Muhammad has not turned
- 3:05Speaker 1: into like a grumpy teenager, because I would get irritated
- 3:09Speaker 1: if I were asked the same thing multiple times a day. No,
- 3:13Speaker 1: that's no, this is what's happening, and this is where
- 3:15Speaker 1: I'm going, and this is what I'm doing. And here's
- 3:17Speaker 1: the one and I talked to Doubt about this already.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Here's the worst example of that that I've ever seen
- 3:22Speaker 2: in my life. When I was in high school, my
- 3:24Speaker 2: best friend Scott Geary, and I would spend a lot
- 3:27Speaker 2: of time with him at his house in his basement.
- 3:30Speaker 3: We would just do, you know, do stuff, and.
- 3:33Speaker 2: His mother would periodically come to the basement door from
- 3:37Speaker 2: upstairs and go Scott and Scott, I go, what.
- 3:43Speaker 3: Scott what? Scott?
- 3:49Speaker 2: What?
- 3:52Speaker 3: Oh, never mind. That happened constantly.
- 3:56Speaker 4: You know, maybe she had fallen and she couldn't get up.
- 4:00Speaker 1: You want him to come.
- 4:00Speaker 3: Up, soone never mind, you never knew, you.
- 4:05Speaker 4: Never Well, that's why, that's why the words front and center. Yeah,
- 4:09Speaker 4: well that.
- 4:13Speaker 2: His mother was a lovely woman, a little a little
- 4:15Speaker 2: spacey from time to time.
- 4:17Speaker 1: But I'm I'm start I never thought I would get
- 4:20Speaker 1: this way, because, like I thought, when my youngest would
- 4:25Speaker 1: be gone and I was empty nest, I'd be like,
- 4:29Speaker 1: that's great, they're out, they're doing their thing there. That's
- 4:32Speaker 1: what they're supposed to do. I'm I'm getting sad about him.
- 4:36Speaker 6: Yeah, you were some years ago you were talking about
- 4:39Speaker 6: how you were kind of looking forward.
- 4:41Speaker 2: Yeah, well it's it's you know, Gina, I can tell
- 4:43Speaker 2: you how wonderful it is to have a twenty five
- 4:46Speaker 2: year old and a twenty two year old living at home.
- 4:50Speaker 3: It's it's great.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Well, you don't ever have to miss them. They're always there.
- 4:56Speaker 1: I mean I want them to leave, that's what they're
- 4:58Speaker 1: supposed to do.
- 4:58Speaker 2: How will I ever be able to miss them if
- 5:00Speaker 2: they don't go away exactly?
- 5:03Speaker 1: But I, uh, yeah, it's we're we're over parenting because
- 5:08Speaker 1: I think we're both in that mode of he's only
- 5:10Speaker 1: going to be here a few more months and so
- 5:12Speaker 1: so this is I'm just putting out a public apology
- 5:15Speaker 1: with Muhammed. I'm sorry your parents.
- 5:17Speaker 2: So when are you going to start thinking about moving
- 5:19Speaker 2: to a smaller house.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Oh, I'm I'm not moving. I'm never I'm not moving.
- 5:25Speaker 5: You don't have a big house. No, all those empty bedrooms. No,
- 5:29Speaker 5: but we have a plan for airbnb it. No, we're
- 5:33Speaker 5: gonna We're not going to get some foster children.
- 5:36Speaker 1: We've lived in that house for sixteen years, okay, and
- 5:40Speaker 1: we're gonna We're gonna renovate it after he leaves.
- 5:43Speaker 3: All rightly, turn it into one big play palace and
- 5:47Speaker 3: no rooms.
- 5:48Speaker 4: Make that kitchen bigger or something like that.
- 5:51Speaker 1: I mean, are well like I'm going to get I
- 5:54Speaker 1: get an office.
- 5:55Speaker 4: You get an office.
- 5:57Speaker 3: Why don't you have an office now?
- 5:58Speaker 4: That's for all of.
- 5:59Speaker 1: Her my work papers. I don't have anywhere for my work.
- 6:03Speaker 1: I don't have an office now because they're bedrooms for
- 6:07Speaker 1: so Jonesy's room is still her room. We haven't undone
- 6:10Speaker 1: that yet because she comes home for Christmas. So her
- 6:15Speaker 1: room is.
- 6:15Speaker 3: Going to be there's a bedroom.
- 6:16Speaker 2: There's only one bedroom downstairs and two upstairs, is that right?
- 6:21Speaker 3: Or three upstairs?
- 6:22Speaker 6: We have three upstairs, one downstairs, So which one will
- 6:26Speaker 6: be your office?
- 6:26Speaker 1: Jones's room. And it's painted pink right now? She said,
- 6:33Speaker 1: you're not going to paint it, are you? And I said, yeah,
- 6:35Speaker 1: I'm not going to have a pink office or a
- 6:38Speaker 1: pink office. She was a little sad. So I think
- 6:42Speaker 1: what I'm going to do the inside of the closet
- 6:44Speaker 1: is painted pink. I think for her, I will just
- 6:48Speaker 1: so when she gets nostalgic for her pink bedroom, I.
- 6:51Speaker 2: Can and make sure that the rest of the walls
- 6:53Speaker 2: are black. Paint everything else black.
- 6:58Speaker 1: But yeah, I get an office, I don't.
- 7:00Speaker 3: Want to do that. I don't think you're going to
- 7:04Speaker 3: go in there.
- 7:05Speaker 2: What you're going to do is your your husband will say, hey, hey,
- 7:08Speaker 2: honeywere are those papers that you had?
- 7:09Speaker 3: Those work papers? They're in my office if you want
- 7:12Speaker 3: to get them.
- 7:13Speaker 1: No, I think I'm gonna The idea is that it
- 7:16Speaker 1: could be a studio if I if I needed that.
- 7:20Speaker 3: An artist studio, No, like a.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Recording studio.
- 7:26Speaker 2: Oh oh that's when so when you start doing your
- 7:28Speaker 2: folk music career.
- 7:29Speaker 1: No like podcasting?
- 7:31Speaker 3: Oh like that?
- 7:34Speaker 1: You know when this isn't happening anymore and I need
- 7:38Speaker 1: to do something else.
- 7:40Speaker 3: How long do you think she'll be coming back home?
- 7:45Speaker 1: But it won't be pink whatever? My my little studio
- 7:47Speaker 1: it is it want?
- 7:48Speaker 4: Does does Mohammad have an exit strategy?
- 7:51Speaker 1: Well, we're so. He's applied at all the colleges. We're
- 7:54Speaker 1: just waiting to get the list of them back and
- 7:57Speaker 1: then make decisions. All right, I will, I will keep
- 8:01Speaker 1: you posted.
- 8:01Speaker 4: Please do.
- 8:05Speaker 1: It, momb pellegrina.
- 8:07Speaker 4: Okay, maybe he's.
- 8:08Speaker 6: Just gonna start leaving a bottle of Pellegrino outside of
- 8:11Speaker 6: his door, like you with your diet coke cans that
- 8:16Speaker 6: you leave lying around to remind you.
- 8:18Speaker 4: Of things work.
- 8:19Speaker 3: That's probably.
- 8:20Speaker 2: I mean, when somebody comes down and tells him what
- 8:22Speaker 2: to do, then take you put a put the pelgrena
- 8:25Speaker 2: bottle outside the door.
- 8:26Speaker 1: Dad's already been here, I put the I already.
- 8:29Speaker 6: Know the drill. Is there an emoji, a Pellegrino emoji
- 8:33Speaker 6: that he could just start sending you?
- 8:34Speaker 4: Okay, look into these?
- 8:38Speaker 6: Uh yeah, you can nap in your office instead of
- 8:40Speaker 6: the overpass.
- 8:43Speaker 4: Eat your shame fries in.
- 8:45Speaker 3: Your office neighbors.
- 8:50Speaker 1: Nobody else is allowed
