- 0:27into our study. An amen.
- 0:31All right, open your Bibles. Would you to Genesis chapter 20?
- 0:35Genesis chapter 20? And I have entitled our message,
- 0:43your flesh will do great damage, your fresh flesh, life will do
- 0:50great damage. And I believe it's an
- 0:53understatement to say that life is full of ups and downs,
- 0:57especially for the Christian anyone's who's It's in Jesus for
- 1:01a short amount of time knows that there are ups and downs or
- 1:07victories and defeats the woman. The man that follows, God is
- 1:11going to make great strides. And you may walk in here today
- 1:14or tuned in and you have been making great Victorious.
- 1:18Strides in your relationship with Jesus.
- 1:21But you also know that in the very next breath or the very
- 1:25next decision, you can make huge mistakes.
- 1:29And big blunders. And to me it's a great joy and
- 1:33let me just ask the question that way, isn't it?
- 1:36A great joy to know right now that we have a gracious, patient
- 1:41and loving God, it's a good thing together.
- 1:44The Lord weaves all of our ups and downs together, sorts them
- 1:48out uses them for his glory and we're reminded that nothing is
- 1:53wasted by God. Nothing.
- 1:55So whatever it is. You're facing right now.
- 1:58Ever difficulty is going through your heart and your life, you
- 2:02know, or as the Bible says in Romans 8:28, and we know that
- 2:08all things work together for good to those who love God.
- 2:12And to those who are called according to his purpose and we
- 2:17have to remember that it's not just our willingness to sin or
- 2:22our willingness to compromise, or it's not just that, but we
- 2:26need to also remember with spiritual progress.
- 2:28Is there is much spiritual opposition.
- 2:32I don't think we can conclude for a moment that the enemy of
- 2:36our souls is pleased or happy in any way with the progress that's
- 2:41made in your life with the victories that you're
- 2:44experiencing with the UPS of your life.
- 2:48So there's great spiritual opposition, we can expect it, we
- 2:52can anticipate it, we know it's coming again.
- 2:56If you're taking notes, you can jot this down in.
- 2:58First Corinthians chapter 16 in verse nine.
- 3:01I'll read it to you from the new living Paul's writing.
- 3:04And he says, he says in First Corinthians 16:9, there is a
- 3:08wide open door for a great work here.
- 3:13And he's talking about a position, a place of course, but
- 3:15I think by application you go, man.
- 3:17God is ready to do a great thing, open doors.
- 3:21But there are many adversaries, the new King James says, and
- 3:26then Paul personalizes it, when he says there's many, that
- 3:30oppose me, and there's opposition, there's difficulty
- 3:36in John 16:33 again, from the new living.
- 3:39Jesus said, I told you all this, so that you may have peace in
- 3:42me. here on Earth you'll have many trials and Sorrows, but
- 3:46take heart because I've overcome the world and we're reminded not
- 3:50only is God gracious and patient and loving but he's our
- 3:53protector and our Shield And, you know, I've noticed over the
- 3:58years that as we live our lives, we all go through pretty much
- 4:04similar tests and trials, and even tribulations, but they
- 4:08affect us differently. So we go through different
- 4:11trials and testings, but they all affect us in different ways.
- 4:16For some, the trial that you're in right now is making you
- 4:19stronger, and it's giving you a new perspective of the strength
- 4:22of the Lord or abiding in Christ or depending on him.
- 4:26But for Others trials. I've seen Barry them.
- 4:29And Destroy them and pull them away.
- 4:33What was really just designed to deal with the Flesh and draw out
- 4:37more faith actually turned out to be receive, the response was
- 4:42In the Flesh. And so now, you're not only
- 4:45dealing with the Temptation in the trial.
- 4:46Now you're dealing with the consequences of the bad
- 4:49decisions made. While in that trial, I heard it
- 4:53said this way wants for some trials, seem to make them better
- 4:56for the battle. And for others trials seem to
- 4:59make them bitter in Retreat, and running away.
- 5:04I share those contrast because in chapter 20, here of Genesis
- 5:09were, are shifting back, our attention to Abraham in a focus
- 5:13from a lot and lot, and Abraham are two very different men.
- 5:19One walks by faith Abraham and one walked by his site, or by
- 5:25flush. It got him into big trouble.
- 5:28Lot ends up, losing everything, and that can't be overstated.
- 5:34We kind of use everything and we use those.
- 5:39Those broad words and don't really mean everything when we
- 5:44use it. But I mean it now he lost
- 5:46everything. He started out with so much and
- 5:51by the time he leaves, Sodom he loses everything in a deep
- 5:56painful way. And yet Abraham's contrasted he
- 5:59doesn't lose anything through this.
- 6:01He gains a greater Faith. He great gains a deeper
- 6:04friendship and relationship. He truly did live in fellowship
- 6:08with God. And so you have those contrast
- 6:11between law and Abraham or even in people in your own life where
- 6:14you may have people, you look up to you respect you Although you
- 6:18like you like to follow their example and then others, you see
- 6:21their example, you see their life, you know, I'm not going to
- 6:23go in that direction. But even the one you follow
- 6:26their example, you know, you have to understand like, Abraham
- 6:30as good as he is in contrast to lat.
- 6:32We must be reminded again Abraham's not perfect.
- 6:37Neither, is anyone of us and we're not perfect.
- 6:40I'm not entirely sure how that became the standard in
- 6:43Christianity or became the standard in her own
- 6:46measurements, but Abraham isn't perfect.
- 6:48And we've seen him fail over and over again.
- 6:52And chapter 20 is one of those chapters where you're going to
- 6:54shake your head again about Abraham.
- 6:57How is it that he can be known as the father of Faith?
- 7:01How is it that he represents a friend of God?
- 7:04Well, he is very same as you and me.
- 7:06Me, that's how you can be a man of Faith, a woman of Faith, a
- 7:11friend of God, he lived by faith, and he trusted God, even
- 7:17in the failures and he got back up and this is like this is like
- 7:21the key that I found is a place of success.
- 7:24You just get back up one more time than you fall.
- 7:30You don't stay down. But you keep moving forward.
- 7:34Humbly, repentant trusting God in the new season.
- 7:40And so, just to set you up in chapter 20, if you haven't read
- 7:42ahead, you going to read through some things, Abraham does here
- 7:45again and you're going to shake your head and just be careful.
- 7:51What's wrong with you Abraham? Actually, you should read this
- 7:54chapter in the mirror and say what's wrong with you.
- 7:57Getting upset again. What's what are you thinking?
- 8:00Didn't you learn your lesson Abraham will go ahead and look
- 8:02in the mirror. Haven't you learned your lesson
- 8:04yet? And before we beat up Abraham
- 8:07too much or Peter or any of the men that have failed or the
- 8:11women have failed in Scripture, We have 20 notice a similar
- 8:15pattern in our own lives ups and downs, victories and defeats
- 8:21falling, on our face and getting back up.
- 8:23It's a familiar pattern that we see in ourselves.
- 8:26So with all that in mind, let's pick up verse 1, chapter 20, so
- 8:31Abraham journeyed from there to the South and dwelt between
- 8:35Kadesh and shur and sojourned in guerard.
- 8:39He's going into the Philistine area.
- 8:41By the way, Abraham said of Sarah is Wife, she is my say,
- 8:46with me Church sister and this is the Q to Abraham.
- 8:49What is wrong with you? And remember, go to the mirror,
- 8:54this is a familiar sin, that Abraham is already failed wonton
- 9:00with his wife abimelek. It says the king of gerar sent
- 9:04and took Sarah. So he's on the move again.
- 9:08Abraham is we're not given any instruction, why?
- 9:11There's no sense of seeking The Lord or getting any direction or
- 9:16having some word from God. He knows what God's voice sounds
- 9:19like, he knows how to intercede, he knows how to pray, he knows
- 9:23how to ask God for help, there's no mention of that.
- 9:26There's just mentioned of him being on the move and he's
- 9:29heading into Philistine territory.
- 9:33Now, we don't know exactly why. Except one thing we know for
- 9:36certain, he didn't receive this direction from the Lord.
- 9:41There could be a hint of impatience here or just
- 9:44continuing to move. But this is a pattern of the
- 9:48flesh set way of doing things moving again. 30 years, earlier
- 9:53Abraham did the same thing, he moved without Direction and
- 9:57again, it pops up. And again it pops up again, it
- 10:00pops up. Remember Abraham, 30 years
- 10:02earlier in chapter 12, went down to Egypt and told Sarah, I'd to
- 10:07lie saying she was a sister, and that was a example.
- 10:12We learn of his fearfulness A weakness of his leadership but
- 10:16God restored him, you know, saved his wife, restored him
- 10:20encouraged him. And what does he do?
- 10:22Again when he comes into different territory, he repeats
- 10:26the same line. In 2nd Corinthians chapter 10
- 10:30and verse 3. The Bible says, though, we walk
- 10:32in the flesh, we do not war, according to the Flesh.
- 10:37And too often I believe in many Circles of Christianity.
- 10:41The devil gets more credit for the bad decisions, Christians
- 10:46make than the Christians taking responsibility for their fleshly
- 10:50decisions, the devil gets blamed for all sorts of things.
- 10:53He had nothing to do with. That it was a Temptation that
- 10:57was sent our way and that Temptation was bit and taken,
- 11:02and, and it was our responsibility.
- 11:04And I think a very quick Pathway to a place of restoration
- 11:08reconciliation with God is just personal responsibility,
- 11:12especially in a culture that doesn't like to take personal
- 11:15responsibility. It is an familiar refrain in our
- 11:21culture, to play the victim. Now, I don't know how to sort
- 11:25out in your life, sometimes, I don't even know how to sort out
- 11:28and my own life where there's a true victimization whether
- 11:32that's true. And I'm not saying in every
- 11:34case, it's not true, But the attention shouldn't be to the
- 11:38victim in some situation in our in our victimization, you know
- 11:44personally but rather the victory that's ours in Christ.
- 11:47Trusting him with the situations in our life.
- 11:50Remembering the sovereignty of God and not to learn.
- 11:55As the culture is taught us to play the victim and never take
- 11:58real responsibility for our own bad decisions and let me just
- 12:03clarify. So that doesn't I have been sick
- 12:05so I want to make My thinking is clear and my words are clear.
- 12:09I'm not speaking of a particular situation where indeed you were
- 12:12the victim of some violent crime or something that truly would be
- 12:16categorized like that. I'm talking about our sinful
- 12:19fleshly Behavior, or in a silly way when comedian years ago
- 12:23would say, well, the devil made me do it and let me just clear
- 12:26up biblically for you, the devil can't make you do anything.
- 12:30And the battle that we fight is really, we have a three-fold
- 12:34enemy. The Bible says the World, the
- 12:36Flesh and the devil and it's the devil that orchestrates through
- 12:42our world system to provoke our flesh and ultimately friends
- 12:48Brothers Sisters in Christ, we are 100% responsible for our own
- 12:53sinful decisions. There may be a lot of other
- 12:57factors that we can work through and and work on and lay before
- 13:01God for repentance and future, avoidance of sin, but until you
- 13:06take personal responsibility until what Paul would describe
- 13:09you have Godly sorrow or like David demonstrated.
- 13:13I have sinned against you God and you alone, you'll never
- 13:18experience the true. Humble repentance that will get
- 13:21you to the Des destination of forsaking sin.
- 13:24You always take a Serve it with you.
- 13:27You're always take a part of it with you until you really
- 13:30understand the severity of your sin, first toward God.
- 13:35And then toward others. Abraham here.
- 13:39He's repeating the same sin over and over again here. with his
- 13:47wife, the one that he loves the most He's such a place of
- 13:53walking. What we would call today Walking
- 13:55In the Flesh, the flesh life. Now, I know if you're new to the
- 14:00Bible, you need to Christianity. You think of the Flesh and you
- 14:04almost immediately think about the skin on your bones and
- 14:07sometimes the word in the Bible is used that way, but most
- 14:11often, when the flesh is used to describe your life or behavior
- 14:17following Jesus, it's speak a good way to remember the flow.
- 14:21Rush is to remember this phrase, the flesh equals old sinful
- 14:26habits. That's not a complete
- 14:30description of the flesh, but when a Christian operates and
- 14:34what we call, what the Bible calls the flush he or she is
- 14:37operating in a natural habitual way.
- 14:41That is not reflective of the will of God and so for many of
- 14:45us we were saved, we were born again later in life.
- 14:50I was in my early 20s so by the time I came to the place of
- 14:55being convicted of sin through the preaching of the Gospel.
- 14:58All the good news that Jesus Christ came to die for your sins
- 15:02and mine and the inviting me into relationship.
- 15:05By the time I got to that moment in time, I had lived a long life
- 15:10of rebellion against God and along the way, developed a lot
- 15:14of bad, sinful habits on how to deal with stuff, simple habits
- 15:18that included, avoidance sinful habits that included, not being
- 15:22honest, sinful habits that included drowning my issues and
- 15:26alcohol and drugs, sinful habits that That included anger or
- 15:30taking things into my own hands and then boom, that one midweek,
- 15:34Wednesday night evening, just like this responding to the
- 15:37gospel. I was immediately Born Again.
- 15:40In the Bible says, I'm a New Creation in Christ, old things
- 15:43have passed away, but one of the things that wasn't changed was
- 15:48my physical brain spiritually. A new man, but physically you
- 15:53couldn't tell the difference. Physically, you could look at me
- 15:56from one moment to the next and I had all the physical
- 15:59attributes that I had the moment before I was born again, and so
- 16:05spiritually. Now, I'm alive.
- 16:08I'm awakened to God spiritually. I now can understand the Bible
- 16:12because of you did, you know, the Bible itself?
- 16:14Says it can't be understood by anyone that isn't saved in
- 16:18relationship with God, that's why people get so frustrated the
- 16:21Bible. That's why when you tell and
- 16:24give a gift of a Bible to a unbelieving friend or co-worker,
- 16:28you direct them right to the Gospel of John because God uses
- 16:31supernaturally, the Gospel of John to bring about faith and
- 16:35unawareness and a conviction of synonym, Believers.
- 16:38And he will use everything about the life of Jesus to bring a
- 16:41person right to the end. And that's what the Gospel of
- 16:44John is to build Faith to bring people to Faith.
- 16:47It's a beautiful gift that God's given.
- 16:49So when you give a Bible Point, people to the Gospel of John is
- 16:54the most understandable. Oil and you follow along Jesus.
- 16:57So when you think to the time you were born again, physically,
- 17:01no major change. Spiritually, you're alive, which
- 17:05began a battle. In the Bible describes that as
- 17:09walking in the spirit, that's walking in the power of God or
- 17:13Walking In the Flesh. And I mean, if you were able to
- 17:17spend some time today, no matter if you had a good or a bad day,
- 17:20I'm certain, you could highlight something that you did or said
- 17:24or thought today, that reflected and old sinful habit pattern the
- 17:31way you've always handled things the way that you revert to some
- 17:35of you you avoid say you know Do you withdraw you don't want to
- 17:38deal with it and that worked for you sort of, I guess, kind of
- 17:42and when you were in the world but it really didn't work for
- 17:45you then and it definitely doesn't work for you.
- 17:47Now, because if you have conflict with someone, you have
- 17:49an issue with someone Jesus said, the spirit way, is you go
- 17:54to them. You and them alone, you share
- 17:57your grievance. If it's a brother or sister, if
- 17:59they hear you, you won your brother.
- 18:00If it's an unbeliever you that they get to witness the power of
- 18:04the Holy Spirit, trying to resolve something that they're
- 18:06probably not. I used to but if you blow it off
- 18:10and you go gossip about them and you get upset with them and you
- 18:13don't try to solve it, that's the flesh or Abraham.
- 18:18He doesn't quite have the spirit life that you and I have in the
- 18:21New Covenant, but he does have a contrast of following God, he
- 18:25knows what it is, like to hear God to obey God to intercede.
- 18:28He has a personal relationship with God or this And to lie
- 18:34again about his wife. I think we can.
- 18:37All agree was not from the Lord. Can I get an amen on that?
- 18:42So you as quick as you are for Abraham, learn to be quick on
- 18:45your own. And just say, hey, you know
- 18:48what, it's pretty clear what I did today, what I said today,
- 18:52what I thought today was not from you.
- 18:55God, you're not to come clean with us and stand up and say,
- 18:58amen. And I've got one and a men that
- 19:00I've got no, no, no, no. I already know you have one.
- 19:05Because I do too. I already know the point is not
- 19:09shame or humiliation, its freedom.
- 19:14When you confess your sin, he is faithful and just to forgive us
- 19:21and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
- 19:25It is not shame to admit that we've sinned against a holy and
- 19:29righteous God, and neither, is it some guilt trip?
- 19:32When we tell someone to their face, hey, will you forgive me?
- 19:35It's freedom and all the things you think is freedom in your
- 19:39flesh is actually bondage. And self-deception and this is
- 19:45where Abraham is in this reminds of.
- 19:49So reminds me of our own Tendencies, Abraham reminds me
- 19:54how we can be delivered and we can be cleared and we can be
- 19:59encouraged and we can be set back on course by God himself
- 20:03intervening in our lives. Receiving our repentance for
- 20:06giving us cleansing us encouraging us.
- 20:10Only to find ourselves making the same mistakes.
- 20:12Again. We struggle with the flesh like
- 20:15Abraham because this is part of the battle.
- 20:20That's why the Bible tells us not to make any provision for
- 20:24the flesh. Because man, any time you feed
- 20:27the flesh, it's more hungry. It's never satisfied and never
- 20:30sits down there like a like after a a large Thanksgiving
- 20:33meal and say oh that was too much.
- 20:35The flesh. Never says, that's too much.
- 20:39And it will always take you farther and it will always take
- 20:43you beyond where you thought you would be.
- 20:48Will you ever come to that place in life where you want?
- 20:51You'll never struggle with your flesh.
- 20:53Know you'll never come to that place.
- 20:57It's a matter of fact, an indication from Paul's own life,
- 21:01Paul the Apostle, it seemed from his writings that the farther
- 21:05along that he was in the faith, the more aware of his weakness.
- 21:11He was And the more admitting he was.
- 21:14So that one of the final things, he writes of a man that God used
- 21:17to grade, these is I just, I'm the chief of Sinners.
- 21:20I mean, look at me. He writes again, if you want to
- 21:24jot it down in Romans chapter 7 about that internal struggle
- 21:28that he had the things he wanted to do.
- 21:30He didn't do and the things that he did, he didn't want to do.
- 21:34He just wrestled in this battle to follow Christ like you and
- 21:40like me and so notice In verse 3, God is going to rescue
- 21:47Abraham again. He says God came to abimelech in
- 21:50a Dream by night and said to him.
- 21:53Indeed you're a dead man because of the woman whom you've taken
- 21:58for she is a man's wife but abimelek and not come near her.
- 22:04And he said Lord which is a word of respect.
- 22:07Will you slay a righteous Nation?
- 22:10Also did he not say to me? She's my sister and she even,
- 22:15she herself said he's my brother in the Integrity of my heart and
- 22:20innocence of my hands. I have done this.
- 22:24I don't have a list of things like 10 things, the flesh does
- 22:27but if I did have a list by did develop it, this would be on the
- 22:30list when you operate in the flesh, you heard other people.
- 22:34Pool. When Christians Walk In the
- 22:38Flesh, Live In the Flesh, you heard other and I hesitate to
- 22:43use this word because I don't mean it in the salvific state,
- 22:46but you heard innocent people. Abimelech, just going through
- 22:50his life and, you know, this was probably an arrangement, not a
- 22:53romantic arrangement with Sarah. It's probably a more of a
- 22:57political, you know, kind of aligning himself with Abraham
- 23:00and and taking a wife into his Harem.
- 23:02It's not like a romantic thing here.
- 23:05However, he, he is that he's doing what was common in the day
- 23:08for an unbeliever. And now coming in contact with
- 23:12the man of Faith coming in contact with this friend of God,
- 23:18through this friend of God, sinful Behavior.
- 23:21He now has a put abimelek in a very bad place.
- 23:28In a worse place than he was before.
- 23:30Abraham came. As I was on the radio today,
- 23:34taking live calls, there was someone that called in an
- 23:37ominously to talk about the pain that hypocritical Christians
- 23:44certain group, I don't know who they were, but they can speak
- 23:48for all of our hypocrisies from time to time.
- 23:50But a group of hypocritical Christians that left a really
- 23:53bad taste in his son's mouth And now those hypocritical
- 23:58Christians who have come and gone, maybe they've repented,
- 24:01maybe they haven't, I don't know.
- 24:02But they moved on but the pain has stayed. and now his son is
- 24:08making bad decisions and in a position where he's justifying
- 24:13all his bad decisions because of some group of people, he met
- 24:17along the way that somehow misrepresented, Jesus, You know,
- 24:24I think don't have any ability to speak into their lives or
- 24:28anything, but I do have ability to speak into our lives and in
- 24:31our flesh damage is people, it hurts people.
- 24:36I mean, I know God will forgive and I know we'll get through it,
- 24:38but also a damages people. Can you imagine getting up
- 24:42waking up in the middle of the night?
- 24:44And God says you're a dead man. What?
- 24:48Yeah, you've got some ones wife. Well we did.
- 24:50That's not what he told me and now he's pleading for his life.
- 24:56I mean, here is Abraham, totally completely living in fear and in
- 25:00his flesh, he's even repeating a sent over which he learned an
- 25:04important lesson from He's putting a man in grave danger,
- 25:09but God is still faithful. God is faithful to intervene and
- 25:14to help him. God has so completely faithful.
- 25:18I've been using this phrase in my mind.
- 25:20God is so completely faithful and utterly reliable.
- 25:25There's no reason for us to test God and you know I think
- 25:28appalled by saying something like that and looking at
- 25:31Abraham's life is go. Well you know why not just might
- 25:33take my chances in the flesh don't take your chances in the
- 25:35flesh that's not what God is teaching us here.
- 25:38I think of what Paul wrote when he wrote I think it was to the
- 25:40Romans he He asked the question, shall we?
- 25:43Continue in sin that Grace May abound?
- 25:46And remember the new King James says, certainly not no way the
- 25:51grace of God is never an excuse to live in sin or to see how far
- 25:56we can get. But I love the gospel of grace.
- 26:01It's the grace of God that saved you, and me, I could think of so
- 26:05many times where God has blessed me when I have not been in the
- 26:11most least position of deserving it as Abraham's here.
- 26:15He's disease, receiving the blessing of God, God is
- 26:18literally saving his life rescue me from his own decisions,
- 26:22delivering him from his fear. I think of so many times gods,
- 26:28Blessings in my life in your life because of his grace,
- 26:32unmerited undeserved that would never, you know, we don't want
- 26:37to find ourselves receiving the grace of God, in vain.
- 26:41But rather responding in love and surrender.
- 26:45Drawing closer to him notice. In verse 5, it says, didn't he
- 26:50say to me? She's my sister and she even,
- 26:53she herself said, he's my brother again.
- 26:56Who else gets damaged here? His wife Because now she's going
- 27:01along with it. It says in the Integrity of my
- 27:04heart, this is the this is abimelek and the innocence of my
- 27:08hands I've done this and God said to him in a dream.
- 27:10Yes, I know that you did this thing and integrity of your
- 27:13heart and I also withheld you from sinning against me.
- 27:18Therefore, I did not let you touch her.
- 27:22This is God's hand in the background.
- 27:25The Unseen hand of God and Emma looks life.
- 27:29And how about in our lives, how modern our lives were god holds
- 27:34us back from sinning against him.
- 27:38He holds us back from Sydney. And, and then, you think we'll
- 27:40wait a minute said that start. Well, will we, will will read a
- 27:44simple truth, like that in the scriptures and then what we will
- 27:47do, will complicate it by saying we'll wait a minute.
- 27:50What about the sovereignty of God?
- 27:51And the Free Will of, man. And how about, we argue about
- 27:54that and forget about the gracious power of God in
- 27:57preventing you. However, he wants to do it, 99%
- 28:01him and one part of your free will 99% your feet.
- 28:05However, God wants to condescend.
- 28:08To your life and mine to hold me back from sin.
- 28:11There's only one response to that and that is, thank you
- 28:13Lord. Thank you for your graciousness
- 28:17and how many of us in our own testimony can think back of the
- 28:21years where we were in Rebellion, maybe some of you in
- 28:23a prodigal life or just things that as an unbeliever believer,
- 28:28and you think back as bad as it was just how gracious God was
- 28:32and not allowing it to get worse.
- 28:37And it just melts our hearts. And so God is speaking to him.
- 28:43Notice in verse 7. It says now therefore restore
- 28:47the man's wife for. He is a Prophet, this is the
- 28:51first mention of the word prophet of the title prophet.
- 28:56Abraham is a prophet. He's a spokesman for God
- 29:00speaking forth, the word of God, to the people of God, and also
- 29:04to the unbelieving world. So, restore the man's wife.
- 29:10He's a prophet, he will pray for you and you will live.
- 29:13If you do not restore her know that you will surely die and all
- 29:16who are yours. So abimelech Rose early in the
- 29:18morning called all his servants told.
- 29:21All these things in their hearing in the men were very
- 29:23afraid and abimelech called Abraham and said to him.
- 29:27What have you done to us? How have I offended you?
- 29:30That you brought on me and all my kingdom of great sin.
- 29:33You have done Deeds to me, that ought not to be done.
- 29:36And abimelech, verse 10 said, Abraham, what did you have in
- 29:40view that you have done this thing and Abraham said, because
- 29:45I thought surely the fear of God is not in this place that they
- 29:49will kill me on account of my wife.
- 29:51And that's where we come to the conclusion that Abraham acted in
- 29:54fear once again, same reason. He valued life.
- 30:00This was an example. He valued his own life over
- 30:04trust in God. Jesus would teach us something
- 30:07very similar, he who seeks to save his life will lose it.
- 30:13You seeks to lose, it will gain it.
- 30:15Notice in verse 12. Indeed, she's truly is my
- 30:21sister, she's the daughter of my father but not the daughter of
- 30:24my mother and she became my wife.
- 30:28And so again, we talked about this in the last time he did
- 30:30this. The reality of the distant
- 30:34relations of being half sister. Yes.
- 30:37But that did not take precedent over.
- 30:39She was his wife not was the primary relationship and he
- 30:44dismisses it came to pass when God caused me to wander from my
- 30:48father's house. Verse 13 that I said to her.
- 30:50This is your kindness that you should do for me and every place
- 30:53wherever we go. Save me.
- 30:54He is my brother and so that's his explanation.
- 30:58God intervenes so lame explanation, but that's what
- 31:01Abraham's feeling at the moment, verse 14, abimelech, took sheep,
- 31:05oxen, and male, and female servants, gave them to Abraham
- 31:09and He restored, Sarah, his wife to him and abimelech said, see
- 31:13my land is before you dwell where it pleases you and saris.
- 31:17He said, behold I have given your A thousand pieces of silver
- 31:21and deed this vindicate to you before all who are with you
- 31:25before all the others and thus she was reproved.
- 31:28So Abraham now praise to God and God healed abimelech, his wife
- 31:33and his maid servants and they bore children in the Lord, had
- 31:36closed up all the rooms of the House of abimelech, because of
- 31:39Sarah, Abraham's wife. Again, I'm encouraged.
- 31:44As God tells abimelech. I didn't let you sin.
- 31:48I didn't let you touch her another picture of God's
- 31:52faithfulness when Victory comes force in how easy it is for us
- 31:58to take credit for the power of God in our lives.
- 32:02How to take credit for? Well, I quit this or I tried
- 32:06this or I did this as the primary reason instead of giving
- 32:11God all the glory for the great things he has done.
- 32:16And I believe it's just one of those things.
- 32:18We won't know how active God was in our lives.
- 32:22Preventing us from further damage until we meet him face to
- 32:26face. I think it's going to be an
- 32:28amazing surprise of Heaven of just how active God has And in
- 32:32our lives because he is faithful, even when we are
- 32:37faithless, he doesn't deny himself.
- 32:42One last thing. Would you turn over to First
- 32:44Samuel chapter 15 with me, please for Samuel 15.
- 32:50A couple last things in the next few minutes.
- 32:54The first one is a reminder that the fear of man brings a snare.
- 33:00We've seen this come up a few times in Abraham's wife and
- 33:05perhaps is just an area where it's a continual need for us to
- 33:10lay before the Lord. But in 1st, Samuel 15 notice in
- 33:14verse 22, King Saul was given a command He was told to destroy
- 33:20the amalekites. Destroy them all.
- 33:23And his response was partial bead Ians.
- 33:27And God sends the prophet Samuel to confront and pick up with me
- 33:32in verse 22, for Samuel 15 in verse 22.
- 33:39Samuel tells Saul has the Lord as great Delight in burnt
- 33:42offerings. And sacrifices as in obeying,
- 33:46the voice of the Lord behold to obey, is better than sacrifice.
- 33:53And to heed than the fat of Rams for Rebellion is as the sin of
- 33:58Witchcraft and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry.
- 34:04And because you have rejected the word of the Lord, he also
- 34:07has rejected. Adieu from being King and notice
- 34:12Saul's response. In verse 24, then Saul said to
- 34:16Samuel, I have sinned, for I have transgressed the
- 34:18Commandment of the Lord in your words because I feared the
- 34:25people and obeyed their voice. The fear of man, or a true
- 34:33cowardice. That's not tempered by the
- 34:35presence of God by faith. In our lives is a terrible
- 34:38thing. It led Peter to deny the Lord it
- 34:42leads. King Saul did disobey get leads
- 34:44Abraham to sell out his wife and it can and will lead many of us
- 34:49into sad and miserable compromises.
- 34:54This unhealthy cowardice and fear, especially the fear of
- 35:00man. And I know it's hard and
- 35:02becoming increasingly more challenging to stand strong in
- 35:07the crowds of the world today for the things of Christ.
- 35:11It seems like the oppression and the resistance and the
- 35:15difficulties are mounting like never before.
- 35:19I mean, people are just there's no more restraint, just calling
- 35:22you names. I mean getting fired in the tip
- 35:25of the, you know, and it just in a instant, giving bad
- 35:29assignments, extra work, your ridiculed, your made fun of an
- 35:34outcast. I mean on and on the list goes,
- 35:37you get kicked out of your house, you lose possessions, you
- 35:40lose jobs all for the name of Christ, but we were taught
- 35:44remember in Hebrews that there is a cloud of witnesses that
- 35:48have gone before. Russ, men, that men and women
- 35:53that have given their lives for the faith.
- 35:55I mean, we went through the whole Hall of faith and then at
- 35:58the end, there were even people that weren't even worthy there.
- 36:00An unnamed of all the people that have gone before us, that
- 36:04have faced some of the things you faced and even worse.
- 36:08And so did, they were reminded with the Flesh of Abraham that
- 36:11in the spirit that were to stand strong in the confidence of the
- 36:15Lord. Your to stand strong.
- 36:18God will be your Defender. The psalmist said, when I cry
- 36:24out to you Psalm, 56, then my enemies will turn back this.
- 36:29I know, because God is for me. The other thing that I see here
- 36:36before we closes Abraham's out of this situation, God rescues
- 36:41him before it gets any worse and then He blesses them.
- 36:45Not only need to bless them to get them out of it, but then he
- 36:49leaves with all this stuff and some of you read the Bible.
- 36:52With that sense of you do good, you get good, you do bad, you
- 36:55get bad, this chapter bothers you and chapters like it it
- 36:59bothers you. Because it's very
- 37:02counterintuitive to how we behave and sometimes how we
- 37:06treat each other, but it's counterintuitive because it's
- 37:10very instructive of the ways of God.
- 37:14There is blessing in Abraham's life, even through great
- 37:17failure. Now in Christ, it's the same
- 37:21thing. It's not that we can avoid all
- 37:24the consequences but sometimes God's even gracious with the
- 37:26consequences. but what you so we know you'll what we sow to the
- 37:32flesh, we're going to reap corruption in Galatians, but
- 37:35also if we sow to the spirit will reap Everlasting line,
- 37:39That's truth goes both ways but I see here that not only is he
- 37:43rescued, what? He's given more things.
- 37:45Now remember, part of the story in Abraham mean the significant
- 37:51story actually isn't about Abraham at all.
- 37:54It's about the seed. Messiah.
- 37:59God is setting up the pathway and the lineage for messiah to
- 38:04come to even rescue Abraham from this synth.
- 38:10To atone for the fullness of his life.
- 38:13His and Ours. And he didn't deserve any of
- 38:18these animals. They didn't belong to him, they
- 38:20didn't deserve any of this money, he didn't earn it, he
- 38:23didn't work for it, he didn't do anything but except the exact
- 38:27opposite. Even God giving lot of way out.
- 38:31He doesn't take it. Although he does get out.
- 38:34He loses everything but Abraham has a pattern of taking the way
- 38:39out that God gives him. And that leads him in a much
- 38:44better Direction than lot. And just, like Paul said, no
- 38:48temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to,
- 38:50man, but with every Temptation what has God given us?
- 38:54A way of escape a way out? Take it quickly, follow
- 39:01Abraham's example in that. And I think with possessions you
- 39:06know in the don't ever think your prosperity and financial
- 39:09successes have anything to do with your cleverness or your
- 39:13business dealings, or how good you are at something, your
- 39:16entrepreneurial Spirit, or whatever it is.
- 39:18That's being built up today. Don't think that God can change
- 39:22anything in a moment. In a heartbeat.
- 39:26Your stocks could go down, don't even look.
- 39:30Don't even check your 401k, if you have, don't even look, your
- 39:34bank account can be emptied in a heartbeat.
- 39:37Everything that you trust in and it's not just for materially
- 39:41rich people. It's for all of us that we
- 39:44wouldn't trust in uncertain riches.
- 39:46The Bible says, but to trust in the Lord, and if he wants to
- 39:50bless you, he'll take care of business, ask Abraham. and if he
- 39:54wants to take everything away, he'll take care of business.
- 39:59A slot. Either way.
- 40:04His blessings are designed to build us up spiritually and
- 40:08we're reminded that every good gift and every perfect gift is
- 40:11from above. It comes to us from the Father
- 40:14of Lights with whom. There is no variation, no,
- 40:17shadow of turning. And he trusts us, he trusts you
- 40:21with his resources, his gifts, his talents, that personality,
- 40:26you have has been given to you on loan by God.
- 40:30To be used for his glory. That willingness to open your
- 40:34house that's been given to you by God.
- 40:37That money though, that does all of that is from the Lord.
- 40:43And it's his we're just Stewart's.
- 40:46So for Abraham with him it won't take long from him to go from
- 40:50the valley of Despair. This really difficult chapter to
- 40:55the mountaintops of success. God is going to take them very
- 40:58quickly and I just think about, you might be in the valley
- 41:00despair right now and you think you know, I've been, I've been
- 41:03away from the Lord for ten years.
- 41:05So, I've got to fight back, ten years.
- 41:07I'm going to give it all ten years and one day and then I can
- 41:10experience the blessings of God. No, no!
- 41:13Quick that word that was lame. There you go, for you guys
- 41:19listening. That was supposed to be a snap
- 41:21of my fingers but a very lame. One at that.
- 41:24You're in that place where you think you got to go 10 years and
- 41:27one day to somehow earn back, God's favor, he's is no, no no.
- 41:30You come today, one decision. One choice and you'll read ahead
- 41:36as you see in his life how quickly he begins to live in The
- 41:41Bounty of the blessing of God. So father thank you for the
- 41:44warnings today or the encouragement or however it is
- 41:47that you would want to use this text in our lives.
- 41:50We know that you are wanting to help us understand the Beauty
- 41:57and the glory, and the Majesty of your faithfulness.
- 42:03That you might. Give.
- 42:07Of your Abundant Blessings to a men and women boys and girls
- 42:11children that would receive them.
- 42:15And Lord is your shaping and molding, our thoughts.
- 42:19And our thinking about you helping us to adapt our life to
- 42:24the spirit life, to die to ourselves and to our flesh.
- 42:30May we receive Abraham's warning today?
- 42:33Yes, he was delivered and yes he leaves more Bountiful but he had
- 42:38one more we never find out how hurt and damage, Sarah, really
- 42:45was We never we don't get the full background story of what
- 42:50kind of conflict this continued in his home or what sort of
- 42:55little things he had to deal with as a man.
- 43:00And we just don't want to find out in our own lives Lord.
- 43:02So lead us in the way of everlasting Deliver Us from
- 43:06foolish thinking compromise positions situations, where we
- 43:12might respond in the fear of, man.
- 43:14Or just fear period. That we might walk in your
- 43:18confidence because we agree with you that God.
- 43:22You haven't given us a spirit of fear.
- 43:26But you given us a spirit of power and love and even a sound
- 43:29mind, we can think clearly about a situation and have Clarity.
- 43:35And I just pray right now for those that might be waiting for
- 43:37clarity that you would God give them the patients through the
- 43:42fruit of your Holy Spirit, long-suffering to wait for the
- 43:45clarity. To not make any big decisions
- 43:50on, maybe it's a bad day, or fearful day.
- 43:56And may you be among us, God may we be among you.
- 44:00A true growing community of love and service to one another.
- 44:05Not just Bible students. But friends of God.
- 44:09Learning your ways but applying them in our lives, in Jesus
- 44:14name. Amen.
