- 1:25All of our shows in honor of Mac, our great producer and
- 1:29friend Jack. This was a shocker.
- 1:31Yesterday's news Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob
- 1:34Manfred announcing a significant policy change in Major League
- 1:38Baseball, stating that permanent ineligibility status for
- 1:42players, coaches and owners banned from the sport will be
- 1:45restored upon their death. Now what's so historic about
- 1:48this is this paves the way for iconic figures like Pete Rose
- 1:53and Shoeless Joe Jackson to finally get their their
- 1:57possibility of being entered into the Hall of Fame.
- 2:00Yeah, I would call it broken news, Sonia.
- 2:02It happened yesterday. So I wouldn't call it breaking
- 2:04news, broken news. It's broken news in more ways
- 2:07than one. And the Pig Rose saga, just when
- 2:14you think it's ending, oh, this is finally it.
- 2:17He's going to get in the Hall of Fame.
- 2:19We're not going to debate it anymore.
- 2:20Might just be beginning as you'd like to put it.
- 2:23Sonia, this is not a no brainer that he's going to get into the
- 2:28Hall of Fame, the different voting committees, the certain
- 2:31resentment towards him. He might not get the votes.
- 2:35Major League Baseball botched this up from the beginning.
- 2:38And do I have any sympathy for Pete Rose?
- 2:40None at all. But the man was a pathological
- 2:44liar. A pathological liar all these
- 2:48years. He completely lacked character
- 2:51and what Major League Baseball did by banning him from the Hall
- 2:54of Fame was wrong. They could have banned him from
- 2:56the sport itself, from playing the from participating as a
- 3:01manager, a hitting coach or whatever other position he might
- 3:05hold. That was fine.
- 3:06But the Hall of Fame had nothing to do with keeping them out
- 3:11because he bet on his team to win and maybe bet on some other
- 3:14games as well. That's wrong.
- 3:16I get all that. If they wanted to assist,
- 3:19suspend them. But meanwhile, to show how
- 3:21hypocritical Major League Baseball has been, they allow
- 3:25him to get inducted into the Cincinnati Red Hall of Fame.
- 3:29They allow that, but they don't allow him to get into the Hall
- 3:32of Fame. Dead Cooperstown Pig Rose
- 3:36tarnished virtually every Hall of Fame ceremony from the point
- 3:41that he was banned. And Johnny Bench said it best.
- 3:45His great teammate on the Cincinnati Reds.
- 3:48When Johnny Bench got ducked into the Hall of Fame, Johnny
- 3:51Bench said people would come up to me.
- 3:53The first thing they'd say was, John, congratulations.
- 3:58Right after that, they said, you think Pete Rose belongs in the
- 4:01Hall of Fame? Who gives a dawn?
- 4:03This is their big moment. No one should be distracted
- 4:07talking about Pete Rose. And I'm going to tell you, I
- 4:10don't, I'm not sure who the Hall of Fame class is going to be,
- 4:14You know, when Pete Rose is eligible that first year.
- 4:18So it's different years according to different
- 4:21committees. But if he is, if he gets in that
- 4:25year, I wouldn't want to get in the same year as him.
- 4:27And even if he doesn't get in, it's a distinct possibility he
- 4:32won't, at least in the beginning, he won't get the
- 4:34votes. All these Hall of Fame is going
- 4:36to hear this to talk about peak Rose, Peak Rose, peak Rose.
- 4:41Now, I know I'm being a little long winded now, but I heard
- 4:45when Pete Rose from a lot of people, when Pete Rose was
- 4:48alive, They're waiting to die. That's what Pete Rose said
- 4:51himself. That's when they'll probably put
- 4:53me in. I don't think that was the plan
- 4:56of Major League Baseball at all. There was one individual by the
- 5:01name of Donald Trump who made a big fuss out of it recently.
- 5:07And that's why Major League Baseball all of a sudden bent.
- 5:11And then and then not saying they're doing it for Pete Rose.
- 5:14They're making one rule for all deceased, you know.
- 5:20Show Jackson, of course, another person.
- 5:23He's been, he's been controversial, but believe me,
- 5:26every year that the Hall of Fame wasn't taking, that was taking
- 5:30place, the people getting inducted were not asked.
- 5:34Do you think Shoeless Joe Jackson belongs in the?
- 5:37Right. They're always asking about Pete
- 5:39Rose. Yeah, I wouldn't want somebody
- 5:41kind of raining on my parade either, Jack, by bringing him
- 5:45up. I mean, years of denying this
- 5:47gambling scandal since 1989 when when they basically banned him
- 5:52for life about the investigation revolving him and an attorney.
- 5:57They had John Dowd that basically he'd bet on baseball,
- 6:01including games that he played himself with his own team, Jack.
- 6:04And then he denied it for so long until during a private
- 6:09meeting in 2002 with the commissioner Bud Selig.
- 6:13And then publicly finally comes out in 2004 in an autobiography,
- 6:17My Prison Without Bars, where he basically cleared his conscious
- 6:21Jack. And so I don't know a lie that's
- 6:24been going on that long publicly and the audacity is my
- 6:28grandmother used to say the unmitigated gall of him to
- 6:33basically spit in the face of MLBI mean, I don't mean to speak
- 6:37I'll on the deceased, but it is how he lived Jack.
- 6:41Yeah, I don't know whether he had a conscience.
- 6:44To be clear, Sonia, I don't know.
- 6:47Maybe he did. Maybe he didn't.
- 6:49I don't know. I don't know, but Pete Rose was
- 6:53in denial, lying about this for so, so long.
- 6:57OK, he came clean after a while and even Rob Manfred, you know,
- 7:03check them out years before Donald Trump said what he had to
- 7:06say to see whether he would reconfigurate his life.
- 7:10Pete Rose had a terrible gambling addiction.
- 7:13You know, what with all sports, obviously.
- 7:16But it was more important for Pete Rose to continue his
- 7:20gambling habits, continue with the same lifestyle as it was to
- 7:25reconfigurate his life and try to get into the Hall of Fame.
- 7:29Look, in the in the beginning with botchi amati botch, she
- 7:33mighty offered Pete Rose a deal where he would get suspended for
- 7:37X amount of time, maybe being eligible like for seven years or
- 7:41whatever, but then could get back in all Pete Rose would have
- 7:45had to say in the beginning, look, I made a mistake, you
- 7:48know, I it's gambling is an addiction and so on.
- 7:52You, you can bet, but within limits.
- 7:54I couldn't keep it within limits, you know, and just show
- 7:58he was a little bit contrite and he would have been in long ago.
- 8:02He would have been in long ago. Keep in mind, Pig Rose was one
- 8:05of the most beloved figures for Major League Baseball.
- 8:08They followed this whole thing up.
- 8:10They had no business keeping them out of the Hall of Fame to
- 8:14begin with, to begin with. Meanwhile, they have his
- 8:18memorabilia in the Hall of Fame, but Pig Rose can't have a plaque
- 8:22in the Hall of Fame. But he could have this bats and
- 8:25other things in there where people could view, you know,
- 8:29anything with a Pete Rose being exhibited.
- 8:32It's it's hypocrisy. Like I said, they heard other
- 8:37players were getting in the Hall of Fame.
- 8:40They shouldn't have to deal with the Pete Rose denials, you know,
- 8:46and everything involved with it. And Pete, well, listen, Pete
- 8:50Rose turned out to be the big lose in this because he's never
- 8:54going to have this moment while he was alive.
- 8:58I mean, he's maybe look, he might look at it from up there
- 9:02and, you know, and view it sometime.
- 9:04Who knows? That's enough.
- 9:06You know, another issue in itself, you know, from a higher
- 9:10power, which I don't want to, you know, I shouldn't have maybe
- 9:13even brought up a Pete Rose is never going to enjoy this moment
- 9:22with his contemporaries being able to ever soak an adulation
- 9:26his family is pushing forth, you know, and they might be able to
- 9:30enjoy it. But So what is, you know, the
- 9:33Leo Derosa famous baseball figure.
- 9:36He got disgusted into the Hall of Fame after he passed away and
- 9:41he wanted to get in very badly. And he said, you know, if I
- 9:45don't get him while I'm alive, I don't ever want to be put in.
- 9:49But his family did show up and accept for him after, But that
- 9:52was different. Leo didn't do anything
- 9:54scandalous, you know, per SE. You know, I started just being
- 9:59Leo Derosa. Well, I mean, good morning to
- 10:03you, H Thank you for supporting us this morning.
- 10:06The one thing you know, there was other issues that Pete Rose
- 10:10had facing as well. We won't get into those outside
- 10:13of the gambling. But the the good thing about
- 10:15this Jack, I guess is like out of sight, out of mind.
- 10:18We don't really have to worry about his eligibility until
- 10:212028, which would be the earliest that he would be
- 10:24considered to be able to be in the Halls Classic Baseball era
- 10:27committee meeting, which considers those players who may
- 10:31contributions before 1980. So in another three years, we'll
- 10:35perhaps be speaking about him now.
- 10:37No, no, Sonia. No, no, no.
- 10:40You're naive, Pierce. Sonia, you, you think you could
- 10:44take this and put it in a drawer and leave it, then get to it
- 10:47later? No.
- 10:49That. What do you think they're going
- 10:51to be talking about this summit Cooperstown for?
- 10:54The next year's. Roads.
- 10:56Peak roads. Now.
- 10:58And players and executives, etcetera, etcetera, who are
- 11:02going to be eligible to vote, reporters are going to be
- 11:05talking to them and they're going to find out.
- 11:08There's a very real possibility Pete Rose doesn't get the votes
- 11:13and we're going to hear the controversy, the peak Rose, you
- 11:18know, SAG sagas come back. It's come back and died down for
- 11:23a while. We've accepted it just wasn't
- 11:25in. That's that we finally got tired
- 11:28of talking about it after like, you know, decades.
- 11:32We finally got tired of talking about it.
- 11:34But he just. Passed away last year.
- 11:36Jack, I mean he just passed away last year and he still is a all
- 11:40time hits hit leader with 4256 hits.
- 11:44Like no one's come close to that yet.
- 11:46He deserves to get in. We're not arguing that point,
- 11:49Sonia. Anyone who does doesn't vote for
- 11:51Pete Rose based on his baseball performance shouldn't be voting.
- 11:56That's not the reason he wouldn't get the votes everyone
- 12:01would vote from on his baseball performance.
- 12:03Give me a break. The all time and he.
- 12:05Gets we just go ahead and listen.
- 12:07To career and not voting for him because there's still people
- 12:12don't vote for him is still going to hold it against him
- 12:16because he bet on baseball while he lied on baseball.
- 12:21Never mind those voting might have character issues
- 12:25themselves. And that's why we're like, he
- 12:28just passed away last year. And it's now all of a sudden,
- 12:32like you said, that the administration we have Trump
- 12:35mentioned it. It's got a lot of trajection
- 12:38behind that once his name got back out there.
- 12:40Like they're going to keep pushing this.
- 12:42And even though, you know the stats are the reason why he's
- 12:45going to get in, you and I may as well just accept, no matter
- 12:48what happened, no matter about the band, he's going to get in
- 12:52posthumously and that's going to be that.
- 12:54But let me tell what Rob Manfred did.
- 12:56It reminded me about what Mountain Landis did.
- 12:59The Commission of baseball in 1961, when it looked like Mickey
- 13:05Mantle and Roger Merits were taking aim at Beirut's home run
- 13:09record and it looked like they could break it in the 1961
- 13:13baseball season, they changed the rules.
- 13:17The schedule went from 154 to 162 games.
- 13:21So that was eight extra games. Mantle and Maris to get to play
- 13:25more than the Bay played. So he met with reporters to try
- 13:30to come to some type of solution because Mountain Landis was a
- 13:35major, you know, not Mountain Landis.
- 13:38The other Commission at the time, Mountain Landis, was the
- 13:41one that suspended Shoeless Joe Jackson.
- 13:44A Major League Baseball decided they put an asterisk next to all
- 13:49records, you know, that were broken because they're eight
- 13:53more games. But obviously they were focused
- 13:56on the home run record only. And Maris broke the home run
- 14:00record. He had an asterisk put next to
- 14:03it, which I thought the years was unfair.
- 14:06But on reflection, if you played eight extra games, that does
- 14:10count for something. And I know that different
- 14:12elements would travel with this or not with different eras.
- 14:18I mean, you got to look at it. This is, it's not just Pete Rose
- 14:21this there's seventeen other players, Jack, that are affected
- 14:25by this permanent ban that happened with baseball.
- 14:29I mean, these crimes range from auto theft to gambling to taking
- 14:34bets on the side, you name it, criminal indictments, all kind
- 14:39of stuff, mostly involving other gambling, but none to the level
- 14:42of Pete Rose. I mean, you know, the they had a
- 14:46the 1919 Chicago White Sox, it goes that far back known as the
- 14:51famous Black Sox who were banned for fixing the World Series with
- 14:55Eddie Ciate, Claude, Lefty Williams, Chick Ganley, Charles,
- 14:59Swede Rizberg, Buck Weaver, Shoeless Joe Jackson was part of
- 15:03that. That whole team banned for their
- 15:05connections to that betting plot.
- 15:06It goes all the way back. To that that movie was a good
- 15:10movie with that eight men out a good movie.
- 15:14You know, Shoeless Joe Jackson, his case is just as big as Pete
- 15:18Rose's. But because no one here live has
- 15:22seen Shoeless Joe Jackson play and he was approximately, you
- 15:28know, 1/2 century ahead of Pete Rose.
- 15:30Actually a little less, you know, all together.
- 15:35Tulis Joe Jackson in that World Series did hit 300 three 75.
- 15:41Statistically he played well, but we're not sure whether he
- 15:45had a role in that or not because even though his stats
- 15:48were good, those hits supposedly didn't come in big situations.
- 15:54You know, if your team is losing 5 nothing and you're coming up
- 15:58with two outs in the 8th inning and you hit a single, you're
- 16:01going to pad your batting average, but it's not in all
- 16:05probability going to be a meaningful hit that's going to,
- 16:09you know, have any influence on the game at all.
- 16:12So there's some suspicion of of Shoeless Joe Jackson in that
- 16:15regard. But there was a feeling by the
- 16:18commissioner Mount Landis that Joeless Joe Jackson knew about
- 16:23the gambling and he didn't say anything.
- 16:26He didn't say anything. He didn't report it.
- 16:29So you know he. Got to take it down with the
- 16:32group basically. You know, why didn't these guys
- 16:35go to court to try to fight it or whatever?
- 16:37I don't get it. The Commissioner had absolute
- 16:41authority at that time. Yeah, I mean, that's the early
- 16:44eons of baseball, kind of 1920 through 1944.
- 16:49And let's be clear, Jack, their commissioner, Mountain Landis
- 16:53was known for being extremely strict, you know, on anything
- 16:56that just smeared the image of what baseball looked like to
- 17:00attack the integrity of the game.
- 17:02And so it's it's, you know, we live in an era that we always
- 17:06see a lot of changes from everything, not just sports.
- 17:10And because of this, you know, let's try to forgive and move
- 17:14forward. This is the reason why we're
- 17:16trying to get these opportunities to bring these
- 17:19people into the to the Hall of Fame.
- 17:23And in my opinion, hearing that story about Joe Jackson, he just
- 17:29was caught up with the group. So you're absolutely right.
- 17:32You know, maybe he just didn't have the opportunity to fight
- 17:35it. He didn't have the resources or
- 17:36what have you. Or maybe there was no fight.
- 17:39It was like whatever Mountain Landis said goes.
- 17:41And that was the end of the story.
- 17:43Yeah, yeah, You know, So what? How do you feel?
- 17:46If I was doing this show here with Mac now, Mac would be
- 17:48saying I put him in already. I think Mac would have been
- 17:51tired of this whole and that would have been the right
- 17:56attitude because we would tired of it after a while.
- 18:01You know, it's been going on so long and just the idea it's not
- 18:08not just going to be in the news at the moment.
- 18:12You know, it's big news at the moment that it that it's
- 18:14newsworthy because you did get reinstated after like all these
- 18:19years. But now it's like the party's
- 18:22just beginning, you know, Reminded me a little too when
- 18:25the Yankee sign a rat. Derek Jeter wasn't too thrilled
- 18:29about it. You could tell.
- 18:30But he was press conferences that as the captain and when the
- 18:35press conference began a Rod's wife at the time said to Derek
- 18:39Jeter are the parties all over meaning all this talk and Derek
- 18:43Jeter not a party's just beginning knowing this is going
- 18:48to be in the news going forward with the next thing we're going
- 18:52to be in the. News about it's.
- 18:54Just like. Listen, Jack, there's nothing
- 18:58for this to be in the news about.
- 18:59This is my opinion. I'm going to play Max advocate.
- 19:02We're we're going to have this little hashtag Max advocate.
- 19:05What would Max say? I'm going to say as Max
- 19:09advocate, I put him in already. This is how I really feel
- 19:13anyway. Put him in.
- 19:14We've talked about it for over 30 years, 40 years.
- 19:17It's happened. It's done.
- 19:19OK? He's not going to enjoy it.
- 19:21He's not going to reap the benefits of what he would have
- 19:24reaped if he was here. Put his name in there.
- 19:26Everybody knows what happened. Let's move on.
- 19:29End of story. No, it's not that some of you,
- 19:32you want someone to get in based on merit or whatever.
- 19:37They can't just they can't just put them in.
- 19:40The voters have feelings on certain things.
- 19:44They've already been feeling for 40 years about how they felt
- 19:47about it. It's either no.
- 19:48No, no. They didn't have a chance to
- 19:50vote on them. Major League Baseball kept them
- 19:52out. Now he's eligible.
- 19:54Now Pete Rose has a chance to get in.
- 19:56He didn't have a chance. You're saying for the next three
- 19:59years they're going to keep talking about it until it's time
- 20:02to consider him being? Until he comes up for vote and
- 20:07then if Pete Rose gets in, they're going to try to tie it
- 20:11in. Well, if he had issues, what
- 20:14about Ron Lemons a rod? You know, I think this situation
- 20:20is different. Granted, this situation is
- 20:23different, but the morality issue the same way.
- 20:26You know, I I don't. Yeah.
- 20:30In all honesty, I would vote for all of them myself and not out
- 20:34of fatigue because they're great players.
- 20:37They're part of the history of the game and me at Major League
- 20:42Baseball should have dealt with it.
- 20:43You know, otherwise, look, I I would guess Sonia, I never asked
- 20:47you this question, but I would guess.
- 20:50I know you said the other day Freddie Freeman's your favorite
- 20:53play Was Hank Aaron your favorite all time player?
- 20:56Yes. Definitely.
- 20:58I mean, why there's no display here and?
- 21:02I'm a brave fan since I was a kid before I even moved to
- 21:05Georgia. Like North Carolina doesn't have
- 21:07a team. So I I grew up, you know, the
- 21:09Hank Aaron stories I would hear. Like yes.
- 21:13And we all knew Barry Bonds's issue.
- 21:17We all knew it when he was chasing Hank Aaron's record in
- 21:21the commissioner baseball with Bud Stealing, who was the owner
- 21:25of the Braves at one point, and a man who was very close with
- 21:29Henry Aaron, who revered Henry Aaron.
- 21:32Yet Hans was allowed to continue on and on and break the record.
- 21:39But meanwhile, he's being kept out of the Hall of Fame.
- 21:41Sometimes morality issues come up.
- 21:43Look, I, I tried to draw a comparison to OJ Simpson.
- 21:48If I were to vote on the Hall of Fame and he was up for, Oh my
- 21:52God, Hall of Fame. Now it could be argue he was
- 21:55acquitted. He was acquitted.
- 21:57He lost the civil case, but he was acquitted of the crime he
- 22:02was accused of. I mean, is it as horrendous as
- 22:07what went on? You know, the crime that was
- 22:12committed against those people by whoever committed it.
- 22:16OK, how's that right? Or whoever committed it?
- 22:19But but OJ Simpson, no matter what we might think of as
- 22:24overall character, you know, it, it's is it football related?
- 22:30Do we just focus on football? That's what it's supposed to be
- 22:33about. But baseball has a little rule
- 22:36about character this sportsmanship.
- 22:40And you have so many players that are so so look, if a player
- 22:44gets suspended, they're hitting another player with 100 mile
- 22:47power fastball, you know, in the head and they feel he absolutely
- 22:52did it on purpose. Isn't that every bit as bad or
- 22:56worse than P Rose betting on baseball?
- 22:59Think of it this. Is how I I am and I hate to be
- 23:03this person because I know they say there's right is right and
- 23:06wrong is wrong. No matter what the wrong is.
- 23:09It's equally wrong if you, if there is a person that's a
- 23:12victim or if there's an entity that's a victim, it's still
- 23:15wrong. With baseball, MLB, that's the
- 23:17entity that was supposedly harmed because of Pete Rose's
- 23:20actions. When you look at it from the OJ
- 23:24Simpson standpoint, or someone hitting someone with a fastball
- 23:28that's 100 mph and they deliberately did that, then you
- 23:32look at it like, OK, this is a person that suffered, you know,
- 23:36damage that they can't come back from or they may have suffered
- 23:40loss of life or whatever. And for me, Jack, when you bring
- 23:44that point in, it does make it really interesting because I'm
- 23:47like you just, this is just the legal part of me speaking
- 23:51because everybody knows, you know, if you're a doctor, a
- 23:54lawyer or whatever, sometimes no matter what you do, if you're
- 23:57suspended, you are suspended for life.
- 23:59There's no coming back. You could make that one decision
- 24:04criminally that would take your license for the rest of your
- 24:07life and no amount of good that you did after that would would
- 24:11go back to the board and they say, OK, we're reinstating your
- 24:14license. That's how you look at it with
- 24:15the OJ Simpson situation. You do not, this is my thing.
- 24:19You do not settle a civil case if you are completely cleared of
- 24:24the criminal case. That's just me.
- 24:26Why would you pay all this money for a civil?
- 24:30Wrong. No, you don't get found.
- 24:37You don't get found guilty. So yeah, everybody knows, you
- 24:39know, I'm in law school. You don't get found guilty.
- 24:41You can only get found guilty in a criminal case.
- 24:44Civil. You were found, I'm liable.
- 24:46There's a difference. So it's basically like whatever
- 24:49action, if he was supposed to have taken could have
- 24:52contributed to their loss of life.
- 24:55So in other words, he admits that something he did did
- 25:00contribute to what happened criminally.
- 25:02So that's why he paid the money civilly.
- 25:06OK. If he was completely innocent,
- 25:09Jack, criminally, you don't settle civilly with a you're not
- 25:12liable. You can't be found liable.
- 25:15So so that's. Different from you, OJ?
- 25:19No, Yeah, I don't have no OJ. These are people's lives, and
- 25:25I'm going to say no because you can't bring those people back.
- 25:28Even though the MLB betting situation was extremely serious,
- 25:32you could say people lost their money or what have you.
- 25:35I mean, people's lives, they were still breathing.
- 25:38That's my point. I guess there's a small
- 25:40difference in some entities, but that's the way I look at it.
- 25:43That's just my opinion. No, I hear you.
- 25:46But right now the big news normally would be the NBA
- 25:50playoffs. It's heating up.
- 25:51But I felt with, you know, we felt that with Pete Rose,
- 25:56Shoeless Joe Jackson getting reinstated after decades to
- 26:01start off with the NBA, even though it's it really is on the
- 26:05tip of people's minds more so than anything with the playoffs,
- 26:10you know, it's something to talk about.
- 26:12And we haven't heard of the last of the P Rose.
- 26:14Then we'll be talking about it in future shows because it's
- 26:16going to be on the news. New things are going to come up.
- 26:18I mean, what such a pleasant last name to be so bitter with,
- 26:22you know, Rose is such a nice name, you know?
- 26:25But yeah, so the NBA playoffs, Jack, you talked about those
- 26:28last night. The Indiana Pacers face the
- 26:30Cleveland Cavaliers in game five of that series.
- 26:33Pacers held on to the three. One league game concluded
- 26:37114105. I mean, the Pacers paced
- 26:40themselves the entire game. Of course, Tyrese Halliburton,
- 26:44you know they call him Hallelujah, led the Pacers with
- 26:47an impressive 31 points along with six rebounds, 8 assists,
- 26:51while Pascal Seacom contributed 21 points, 8 rebounds.
- 26:54Jack, I actually watched these two games last night.
- 26:57This is the first time I've watched both games in their
- 27:00entirety, so we could discuss this.
- 27:02The Pacers demonstrated offensive efficiency 10 from 15
- 27:07from the field, 6 from 10 from beyond the arc.
- 27:10For Halliburton, this is the Pacers second consecutive year
- 27:15that they are advancing to the Eastern Conference Finals, and
- 27:18it's their first time since 2005 series against the Celtics that
- 27:22they've won three Rd. games in single playoff series.
- 27:27You know, I don't like saying this because Kenny Atkinson was
- 27:30coach of the year and he did it. He's a really good, good coach.
- 27:33But he got out coached by Rick Carlisle.
- 27:36I mean, the Pacers ball movement with so much and with the
- 27:40Cavaliers was basically rely on Donovan Mitchell and Donovan
- 27:44Mitchell couldn't hit a shot it seemed for anything.
- 27:48He was. Partially injured part of the
- 27:50game. Yeah.
- 27:50Yeah, I know. I understand that.
- 27:52Listen, no blame on Donovan Mitchell here.
- 27:55I'm just pointing it out. He he played outstanding in the
- 28:00early games of these playoffs. And it's really hard to carry a
- 28:03team. It didn't seem to be that much
- 28:06energy, you know, in Cleveland's arena until late in the game
- 28:10when they'd make a little bit of a run.
- 28:12Jared Allen, one of my favorite players.
- 28:15What haven't you forgot to rebound?
- 28:17I mean, what went on? I mean.
- 28:20Yeah, very disappointing. Cleveland, I don't want to hear.
- 28:25Well, they could take a lot out of this year.
- 28:27You know, they won 64 games. I never like to say if it went
- 28:32for nothing, you win all those games, it counts for something.
- 28:36But like we've said on past shows, teams got to take the
- 28:39next step at certain points. It's understandable if you have
- 28:45a powerhouse team in your conference and you just can't
- 28:48quite get by them. It's understood.
- 28:51It's still disappointing, but these are the Indiana Pacers.
- 28:55You're the Cavaliers. You're expected to be the team
- 28:58like that. I don't want to hear the paces
- 29:00are better than we think that you are fine.
- 29:02You're still the Cleveland Cavaliers, the team that won 60.
- 29:06Four. It was #1.
- 29:07Seed or exactly who? Losing all three games at home.
- 29:13That was crazy. They had a good regular season.
- 29:17Yeah. Indiana Pacers, yes.
- 29:20And they had a 4425 lead in the second quarter that basically
- 29:26despite doing that, they weren't even able to keep it up. 4425 is
- 29:31a significant score deficit, so that they should have stayed in
- 29:34that game for the duration. They were unable to keep that
- 29:37momentum. It's almost like they ran out of
- 29:39gas. Jack Donovan Mitchell could not
- 29:41save that team. All by.
- 29:44And in game one as well, I mean, they had the lead, they let it
- 29:49get away. And you know, I think Cleveland
- 29:52play really well in game three of the series to cut the pace to
- 29:55lead to 2:00 to 1:00. And I thought to myself, wow,
- 29:58here's Cleveland coming. They got it together.
- 30:01They're going to win the next game, I think in Indianapolis,
- 30:04then win game five and Cleveland maybe lose Game 6.
- 30:08And Indiana and then win game seven at home.
- 30:11They're going to find a way to win the series.
- 30:14But but you know, it's that Indiana advances.
- 30:19It's going to be a great opportunity for the Knicks here
- 30:23if they can close out the Celtics, which now they'll
- 30:26probably be able to do. You know what you hear in the
- 30:31Celtic next series? It resumes tonight.
- 30:34I would Jason Tatum out. The whole mindset changes.
- 30:37I don't like when people say about a team that's down 31,
- 30:42don't think of the big picture. Just think of one game at a
- 30:46time. Now, that's not wrong a lot of
- 30:48the time, but if Jason Tatum was healthy and the Celtics are down
- 30:5431, they should be thinking in terms we got to win the next
- 30:59three, we got to do three in a row.
- 31:01You focus completely on one game and shut everything out.
- 31:06If you don't feel you're a superior team, you try to get
- 31:10back into it in little bits and pieces.
- 31:12But now the Celtics in the position they got to focus on so
- 31:17much on game five and Boston to eke out a victory.
- 31:22And then you know, that makes it 32 because the Celtics probably
- 31:25believe without Jason Tatum that they can win a game five in
- 31:30Boston if you gave them a lie detector test.
- 31:33They're all those players on the Boston Celtics.
- 31:36Do they believe they they're going to win three in a row
- 31:40against the next. Most of them are going to fail
- 31:42that lie detector test. They're not going to believe
- 31:44they're winning the next three without Jason Tatum.
- 31:47They're liars if they say otherwise.
- 31:49But for one game tonight, you give them a lie detector test
- 31:54and ask them whether they think they're going to win the game.
- 31:57I think the majority would pass it, that they would believe that
- 32:00they're winning the game. And then you win game five.
- 32:03Who knows what happens in Game 6.
- 32:06If you somehow go back to New York and beat the Knicks without
- 32:10pay them, then anything can happen in the Game 7.
- 32:14I don't know, Jack. I just feel.
- 32:16Excuse me, Jason Tatum was not playing Lights Out like we were
- 32:20used to. Seeing.
- 32:22When I talked about this, he did have that exceptional game and
- 32:26he scored 42 points against the Knicks.
- 32:29But I mean, I would go in there if I'm the Celtics and be like,
- 32:33OK, he's not here. There's nothing we could do
- 32:35about it. We have to mount up, as they
- 32:38say, and literally pull all together and just get this done.
- 32:42Like they can't say, oh, woe, it's me.
- 32:44You know, this is our excuse. We're going to fold up like lawn
- 32:47chairs. These are the defending world
- 32:49champs, Jack. They're not going to just.
- 32:52They're not the defending world champions.
- 32:54Not no with I would Jason Tatum out of the lineup.
- 32:58They don't have a championship pedigree.
- 33:01Jaylen Brown is not going to carry that team.
- 33:05Yeah, maybe for one game. Maybe for one game.
- 33:08He can be sensational. He's not.
- 33:11Carrying them for three games, Yeah, Tonight they can win the
- 33:14Celtics. Tonight, it's well they have.
- 33:19It's a 5050 proposition going back to Boston with this game.
- 33:25You know, for those who are going to say if the Knicks win
- 33:28this series, which they probably will do at this point, I don't
- 33:32want to hear, well, if Jason Tatum didn't get hurt, the
- 33:36Knicks wouldn't have won it. Keep this in mind in game four
- 33:40with the Knicks up to one in the series, Jason Tatum went out
- 33:44with the injury with three O 6 left in the final period with
- 33:49the Knicks up 7 points. We don't know for sure who would
- 33:54have won game four had Jason Tatum not gotten injured, but
- 33:58the Knicks did have a 7 point lead with the three O 6 to play.
- 34:03So it's not unfair to say the Knicks would have had at least a
- 34:075050 chance of winning Game Four with a healthy Jason Tatum.
- 34:14Well, I mean, you know, we always say we have no idea how
- 34:18that would have turned out because we just have no idea.
- 34:23But we know that they have to show up and show out or they're
- 34:26done just like the Cavs. Let's talk about some other some
- 34:30tight games here because Jack and I were going to wrap up a
- 34:33little early today. We've got some other obligations
- 34:35to take care of to get you guys in the know of the Sports News
- 34:38and, you know, secure some interviews we got coming up here
- 34:41on some other shows. Nicola Jokic, I mean stunning
- 34:46performance. Jack, I mean he went off.
- 34:49I'll talk about 44 point plus. I mean, he had like back-to-back
- 34:55points. He had 27 points, 13 rebounds in
- 34:58the very beginning, consistent ability.
- 35:01He maintained impressive averages.
- 35:03I mean, even, you know, when he was out there.
- 35:06He's been, of course, previous MVP recognition, three time MVP,
- 35:10two time MVP, whatever. But then SGA performance for the
- 35:15Thunder, despite the team's loss in Game 5, continues to elevate
- 35:19his status among the NBA's elite.
- 35:22You heard OKC Channing MVP for him as well.
- 35:25But last night, Jack, I mean, that game was explosive.
- 35:29Of course, the series was tied to two at the beginning of the
- 35:32series. And of course, now you know,
- 35:35this is this thing is going to go down to seven games, Jack.
- 35:38Are you at the well, Game 6 is in Denver.
- 35:41The Denver isn't be favored to win Game 6.
- 35:44But I'll tell you, you know, Jay Train made a good point on this
- 35:49show about, OK, CSGA doesn't have that second big star
- 35:55playing with him. So in a way, it shows you how
- 35:58well balanced OKC is and how underrated, you know, SGA is.
- 36:03I mean, he's the quietest superstar maybe in all the
- 36:06sports. He is.
- 36:09But you know, Djokic can only. I mean, he tried to carry Denver
- 36:13last night. He played a phenomenal game and
- 36:18Denver just came up short. I mean, it's, but it, it's a
- 36:22terrific series going on and you do get the feeling Denver is
- 36:26going to bounce back in game six and then we're going to get a
- 36:28great, great Game 7. Yeah.
- 36:32And so we're looking at that now as we get ready to wrap up here
- 36:35a little bit. The Warriors and Timberwolves,
- 36:37Jack, I mean, Steph Curry's been out for a greater part of this
- 36:40theories already. Another make or break situation.
- 36:45I don't know if the Warriors are going to be able to sustain and
- 36:48pull this one out. I think Golden State is
- 36:52basically cooked without that Curry.
- 36:55They're not they're not coming back three one.
- 36:57And Jimmy Butler is not all of a sudden going to carry them.
- 37:00And, and I think Minnesota, did, you know, they were so close
- 37:07last year, you wondered whether was the time to finally, you
- 37:10know, get to the Finals. But I kind of like, I kind of
- 37:14like Minnesota to close things out tonight and then and then,
- 37:20and then what? Minnesota would go on, you know,
- 37:22to play the OKC Denver winner. And yeah, I wouldn't sell
- 37:26Minnesota's chances short. You know, we're going to the
- 37:29Finals. Wouldn't that be ironic if we
- 37:31had a Finals? Who would have thought?
- 37:33The Indiana Pacers against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
- 37:38I mean, who would have? Who would have thought that, you
- 37:40know? And if they didn't even.
- 37:41Play up to a while ago, Indiana Pacers against anyone.
- 37:45You know, if I'm the Knicks, what an opportunity they could
- 37:49have. To win in.
- 37:50The championship they should beat the Celtics.
- 37:52Now the Knicks. Indiana Pacers are very beatable
- 37:56and if they beat the Pacers, they could be playing the
- 37:59Timberwolves in the finals. Wouldn't that be something?
- 38:03Julius Randle against the Knicks.
- 38:08That would be beautiful. For some reason, guys, let me
- 38:10just say none of our comments were coming in until now.
- 38:14So good morning to Miss Linda. Good morning, Monkey.
- 38:16Good morning, Beastrilla. Everybody but Miss Linda, but
- 38:23miss. Let me tell you though, Jack,
- 38:25while you're while you're sounding as usual over talking
- 38:31everybody, Miss Linda says that Matt would agree with me and to
- 38:36move on about the Pete Rose thing.
- 38:37And she's also, you know, here, of course, supporting us.
- 38:40Miss Linda, we're good to see you.
- 38:41But yeah, Jack, this is going to be an ugly matchup.
- 38:44I'm not happy. I, I do say, even though I don't
- 38:47have a obviously a dog in the fight anymore, I hope the Knicks
- 38:50win it all. At this point, if the Celtics
- 38:52get eliminated and the Warriors get eliminated, I mean, though I
- 38:55have players on both teams that I'm interested in, it's going to
- 38:58be, do you think they're going to try to push Steph into
- 39:01playing, you think? No, no Steph on the left.
- 39:04Steph carries the most power in that organization.
- 39:09No one would dare put an iota pressure on Steph.
- 39:13No one would tell. Not at all.
- 39:16They'll wait for Steph to come to them.
- 39:18The team doctors will be working with them.
- 39:20They'll ask him how he could feel, you know, whether he can
- 39:25go and not. Steph already said.
- 39:27He's not getting pushed back into playing.
- 39:29He he and Steph is smart. He knows your career.
- 39:33He's not going to get the push back.
- 39:35It's just the fact that. It's just the fact that
- 39:39basically we are looking at a situation that Steph has to
- 39:46like. He has to be the savior of this
- 39:48team. Sit down 31 Sonia.
- 39:51If it was a Game 7 and Steph was 5050, he could go either way.
- 39:57Maybe he takes a chance, Maybe, but he's not with the team.
- 40:02Down three one I listen to most famous.
- 40:06Incident in history of a player trying to come back from an
- 40:09injury and actually playing a little bit with Willis Reed in
- 40:13game 7/19/70 against the Lakers game seven of the finals.
- 40:18But the reason he came back and and got on the court and hobbled
- 40:23was because it was the final ultimate game to decide the
- 40:27championship. If it was an early any earlier
- 40:30game in the playoffs, Willis Reed wouldn't have seen the
- 40:33court and that might be the case with Steph.
- 40:36Steph will make that decision. Don't even question someone of
- 40:39his character. No one has high character,
- 40:42that's just. Do they?
- 40:44It's not that we just, number one, we know Steph wants to
- 40:47play. It's not like, you know, he's
- 40:49doesn't want to play you. Like you said, he carries that
- 40:51team #2 we know because of the caliber of player that he is
- 40:55that the organization is not going to, you know, pressure
- 40:58him. I'm just saying, do you think
- 41:00that they take a risk, you know, give him a couple quarters on
- 41:02shots or whatever, bandage them up or whatever they have to do
- 41:06and, you know, put them out here?
- 41:08Steph will make that decision 100%.
- 41:12I obviously he would consult with the doctors and they, yeah,
- 41:18if the doctors thought he was being put at additional risk,
- 41:21they'll have that discussion. I think Golden State isn't going
- 41:24to push it with Steph. He's too valued.
- 41:26Believe it. If it means they're exiting the
- 41:28series, hit down 31, they're not coming back.
- 41:30I hate to say it, you know, I hate to say it.
- 41:33You're not going to have Golden State, you know, when the next
- 41:37three against Minnesota and then play the Denver OKC when I mean,
- 41:41they're through, you know? I hate to say it, you know, but
- 41:45they're basically through. Oh my gosh.
- 41:47That's so sad. Well.
- 41:48I think they lose. I think they're losing tonight,
- 41:51you know? But listen, you know, maybe they
- 41:54when they extend the series, who knows, but Anthony Edwards?
- 41:58It's delaying the inevitable. Rudy Colbert, you know they're
- 42:01not letting this get away. Yeah, because all they got to
- 42:03do, Jack, even if they win tonight, is delaying the
- 42:06inevitable because all the Knicks need to do is win one
- 42:09more game. Well, yeah, you mean the
- 42:12Timberwolves? One more game.
- 42:13Excuse me? Yeah, Timberwolves, one more
- 42:15game. Right, right.
- 42:16I mean, listen the extended series.
- 42:18Listen, anything can happen. Anything can happen.
- 42:22Anthony Edwards could go down with an injury.
- 42:25You know, any key player and you look in the equation changes.
- 42:30I mean, like we were saying a moment ago, we're about to run
- 42:33out of time here. Jason Tatum, if he wasn't
- 42:37injured, the Celtics would be very alive, down 31, very alive
- 42:43to win the next three games. But with Jason Tatum out the
- 42:47Celtics, you know, if not through, yeah, like halfway
- 42:52there to being, you know, into oblivion at least.
- 42:55Yep, halfway there and you know. More than halfway.
- 42:59More than halfway reporters. There.
- 43:01Yeah, Yes, yes, yes. But you mentioned a term earlier
- 43:05that it's going to be more than likely they are through.
- 43:08And Speaking of through, Jack and I are through for today.
- 43:12We do realize there was a technical issue that I just got
- 43:15brought to my attention with the network on Roku.
- 43:18So we will re air this show this afternoon.
- 43:21For those of you who are on the Roku network, we apologize for
- 43:23the technical difficulties and Jack and I will see you again on
- 43:27Friday morning, right, Jack? Of course, today shows
- 43:30throughout today. I'm on Premium, Proper Sports
- 43:33Tonight. Keith Ingle, Beau Crouch, lots
- 43:35of shows, Robert Butler on you guys.

- 43:41the day and Jack and I bid you all a great day.
