- 0:25Welcome back, listeners to Sandman Stories Presents.
- 0:27Folklore podcast where I read you to sleep.
- 0:29Or until the next story. I am your host, Dustin.
- 0:32And if you'd like to hear me raunchy and sweary, there's a
- 0:35Sandman Stories After Dark Patreon you can join at any
- 0:38level. And it's just me reading dirty
- 0:40tales. Today we are back in the book of
- 0:43Korean folk tales written down. By WE Griffiths.
- 0:46And as you know by now, I had to rewrite some of the story as
- 0:49Griffith seems to be paid by the letter.
- 0:52This is a sad story of sacrifice.
- 0:53Which does result in the death of a child.
- 0:56Just a warning for those who might not want to listen to.
- 0:58That sort of story. OK, let's begin.
- 1:03The voice. Of the Bell When Tejo, the Great
- 1:07general and 1st king of Korea, founded a new dynasty, he moved
- 1:11the capital near the great River Han.
- 1:14He resolved to build a mighty city called Hanyang, or the
- 1:17place north of the river. It was to have a high wall
- 1:21around it and lofty gates on each side.
- 1:24However, the people. Commonly called the city.
- 1:26Soul. Or capital.
- 1:28All roads in the Kingdom lead to it.
- 1:32He was happy when the workmen came upon a bell while digging
- 1:35the foundation for Dongde Moon. It was a lucky omen, and they
- 1:39carried it at once over to the king.
- 1:41He hung it over the entrance to his palace, and it hangs there
- 1:44still. But such.
- 1:47A bell could only make a tinkle, while King Tejo wanted one that
- 1:50would ring out loud and long. He was especially anxious about
- 1:55this for Inshila, once a rival state, one of the biggest bells
- 1:58in the world had hung there, and Tejo wanted one that was even
- 2:01better than that famed striker of the.
- 2:03Hours. He wanted to have even a larger
- 2:06bell to hang in the central square in the heart of soul.
- 2:09So they can be heard by. Every man, woman and child in
- 2:12the city. After that it must be able to
- 2:15flood miles of hills and valleys with its melody.
- 2:18By this sound, the people would know when to get up.
- 2:21Cook their breakfast, sit down for.
- 2:22Supper. Or go to bed.
- 2:24On special occasions his subjects would know when a
- 2:27King's possession was passing, or when a royal Prince or
- 2:29Princess was getting married. It would sound out a dirge when
- 2:33His Majesty being dead, all the land must mourn, and people wear
- 2:37white. Clothes for three.
- 2:38Years and Korea becomes a land of mourners.
- 2:43The guardian spirit of the city would have its home in the bell.
- 2:47Word was sent out by messengers who wrote on big horses, little
- 2:50ponies, donkeys and bulls to all the provinces, publishing the
- 2:53King's command to all governors, magistrates and village.
- 2:56Heads. To collect copper and tin to
- 2:58make the bronze bell. The bell was to stand 10 feet
- 3:02above the ground and be 8 feet. Across that is.
- 3:06As high and wide as a Korean bedroom on the top was going to
- 3:10be two terrible looking Dragons forming the framework.
- 3:13By which the bell was to be hung.
- 3:16Weighing so many tons that it would balance 500 fat men on a.
- 3:19Seesaw. Only heavy beams made of whole
- 3:22tree trunks could hold it in the belfry.
- 3:24Which must be. Strong enough to stand the
- 3:26shaking when the monster was wrung.
- 3:29It had no Clapper inside, but outside was a long log swung by
- 3:33heavy ropes from pulleys above. The men pulled it back and let
- 3:37it fly, striking the boss on the Bell's surface.
- 3:41This awoke the music of the bell, making it tall.
- 3:44Boom, rumble, growl, hum, croak or roll, sweep melody
- 3:48accordingly, as the bellman desired.
- 3:52So the procession of bulk. Hearts on the.
- 3:53Road to Seoul creaked with ingots of copper.
- 3:56Many donkeys had swollen gallons of bean soup at the in stables.
- 4:00Before they dropped. Their load of metal in the city,
- 4:03meanwhile, hundreds of bulls bellowed under their weight of
- 4:06the brushwood and timber put on their backs to feed the furnaces
- 4:09which were to melt the metal for the mighty bells casting.
- 4:13A deep pit was dug to hold the core in the.
- 4:15Mold and hundreds of fire clay. Pots and.
- 4:18Ladles were made ready for when the red hot stream would be
- 4:20ready to flow. All the boys in Seoul were
- 4:24waiting to watch the fire kindle, the smoke rise, the
- 4:26bellows roar, the metal run and the foreman give his signal to
- 4:30tap when the fire imp on the volcano heard what was going on.
- 4:35He was awfully. Jealous, never thinking that
- 4:37common men could handle such metal.
- 4:40Properly direct a. Roaring flames and cast so.
- 4:42Big a bell. He snorted at the idea that King
- 4:45Tejo's men could beat the bells that hung in China's mighty
- 4:48temples or in Chila. 'S pagodas.
- 4:52But when there wasn't enough. And the copper collectors were
- 4:54still at their work. One of them came to a small
- 4:56village and called. It a house where.
- 4:58Lived an old woman carrying a baby.
- 5:00Boy strapped to her back. She had no coin, cash, metal or
- 5:04fuel to. Give, but was quite ready to
- 5:06offer either herself or the. Baby.
- 5:09In a tone that showed her willingness, she said.
- 5:12May I give you this boy? The collector paid no attention
- 5:15to her, but continued on, taking nothing from the old woman.
- 5:19When in Seoul, however, he told the story, and thus it came to
- 5:22pass that many heard of the matter and remembered it later.
- 5:27So when all was. Ready the fire Clay crucibles
- 5:29were set. On the white hot.
- 5:30Coals the blast. Roared until the bronze metal
- 5:33turned into liquid then. At the word.
- 5:36Of the master the hissing molten stream ran out and filled the
- 5:40mold, patiently waiting till the.
- 5:43Metal had cooled, alas. They found the bell had cracked.
- 5:48The casting was raised by means of heavy tackle.
- 5:50Erected at Great. Expense on the spot and the bell
- 5:53was broken up into. Bits by Stallworth Blacksmiths.
- 5:56Wielding heavy hammers. Then a second casting was made,
- 6:00but again when cooled it was found to be cracked.
- 6:04Three separate. Times has happened until.
- 6:06The price of the palace had been paid.
- 6:08For work. Fuel wages.
- 6:09And yet there was no bell. King Tejal was in despair.
- 6:15Yet instead of crying or pulling his topknot or berating the
- 6:18artisans who had done the best, they.
- 6:20Could. He offered a.
- 6:21Large reward. To anyone who could point out.
- 6:23Where the trouble lay. And show what it was lacking and
- 6:27thus. Secure a perfect.
- 6:28Casting. Then out stepped a Workman from
- 6:32the company. Who?
- 6:33Told the story. Of the old woman and said that
- 6:35the bell would crack after cooling unless her.
- 6:37Proposal was accepted. Anyway, he said.
- 6:41The hag was a sorceress. And if the child were not a real
- 6:44human being, no harm could be done so.
- 6:47The baby boy. Was sent for and when the.
- 6:49Liquid metal had half filled the pit was.
- 6:51Thrown into the mass, there was some feeling about feeding a
- 6:56child to the fire demon. But when they hoisted the
- 6:59cooled. Bell up from the mold low.
- 7:02The casting was a. Perfect success and.
- 7:04Everyone apparently forgot that a human life had entered the
- 7:07bell. Soon, with file and chisel, the
- 7:11great work was finished. The hanging ceremonies were very
- 7:15impressive when the bell was placed in the City Central
- 7:17Square. Where the broad.
- 7:18Streets from Namdemun and those looking to sunrise and sunset
- 7:22met together, suspended by heavy iron links from the staple on
- 7:26the stout timber frame. The Bell's mouth was.
- 7:29Exactly a foot. Above ground, then around and
- 7:33over it the. Belfry was built.
- 7:35The names of the chief artisans who cast the bell, and of the
- 7:38royal. Officers who supervised.
- 7:39The hanging ceremonies were engraved on the medal.
- 7:42It was decided. However, not to.
- 7:43Strike the bell until it was fully housed.
- 7:46And the suspended log. As thick as the mast of a ship.
- 7:49Was made ready to send forth the initial boom.
- 7:52Meanwhile, 10s of thousands of people.
- 7:54Waited to hear. The very first.
- 7:55Music of the. Bell Everyone believed it would
- 7:59be good luck and that they would live longer for it.
- 8:02The boys and. Girls were listening so hard.
- 8:04They could barely get to bed. And some were afraid they might
- 8:07fall asleep when it rang. The little folks whose eyes were
- 8:11usually fast. Shut at sunset.
- 8:13Begged hard to stay. Up that night until they could
- 8:15hear the bell. But some fell asleep because
- 8:18they could not help it. And their eyes closed.
- 8:20Before they knew. It what shall the name of the
- 8:23bell be? Your Majesty?
- 8:25Asked A wise. Counselor, call it.
- 8:27Injung said King Tejo that means man decides for every night at 9
- 8:32O clock, let every. Man or boy decide to go to bed.
- 8:36Except magistrates, let not one male person be found on the
- 8:40streets on pain of being paddled.
- 8:43From that hour until midnight, the women shall have the streets
- 8:45themselves to walk in. The royal law was.
- 8:49Proclaimed by trumpeters, and it was also.
- 8:51Ordained. That at every morning and
- 8:52evening, at sunrise and sunset, the band of music should play at
- 8:56the opening and shutting up the city gates.
- 8:59So Injung or masculine decision is the Bell's name to this day.
- 9:04And as of yet the bell was silent.
- 9:06It had not spoken, but when it did sound.
- 9:09The people of Seoul discovered that it was the most wonderful
- 9:11bell ever. Cast.
- 9:13It had a memory and a voice. It could wail as well as sing,
- 9:17in fact. Some to this day declared that
- 9:19it can cry for, whether in childhood, youth, middle or old
- 9:24age, in joy or gladness. The bell expresses.
- 9:28Their own feelings by its change of note.
- 9:30Lively or gay in warning or congratulation.
- 9:35At 9:00 on the first night of the 7th Moon, the Great.
- 9:38Bell of Soul. Sounded the 7th month, being the
- 9:42month of the Star Maiden of the Loom, and the Ox Boy with his
- 9:44train of attendants, who stand on opposite sides of the River
- 9:48of Heaven. And cross over the bridge of
- 9:50birds. At 9:00 all the men were in
- 9:53their rooms, ready to put on their pyjamas and go to bed at
- 9:55once, while all the women fully. Clothed in their best were on
- 9:59their. Doorsteps ready, each with a
- 10:01Lantern in her hand. For.
- 10:02Their outdoor. Stroll 4 strong men seized the
- 10:06rope, pulled back on the striking log a whole yards
- 10:09distance, and then let it fly. The timber bounded back, and out
- 10:13gushed a flood of. Music that rolled across the
- 10:15city in every. Direction and over the hills,
- 10:18filling leagues of space with their sweet sound, the children
- 10:23clap their hands and dance with joy.
- 10:25They knew they would live long. For they had heard the sweet.
- 10:28Bells first music. The old people smiled with joy.
- 10:34But what was the surprise of the adult folks to hear the bell
- 10:36could talk, Yes. It actually sounds like it made
- 10:39a sentence until it ended, like a baby's cry.
- 10:49Yes. There was no mistake about it.
- 10:51This is what it. Said my mother's fault, my
- 10:55mother's fault, and to this day the mothers in soul.
- 11:00As they clasped. Their darlings to their bosoms
- 11:03resolved, that it shall be no. Fault of theirs if they ever
- 11:05lack love or care, they. Delight in their little ones
- 11:09more. And lavish on.
- 11:10Them a tender affection. Because they hear the great.
- 11:13Bell Talk warning parents to guard what heaven has committed
- 11:16to their care. The end
- 11:45this. Was a sad.
- 11:46Story and it also. Shows some.
- 11:49Of the old Korean stuff. So there was a time when no man
- 11:52could go out and only women could go out.
- 11:53The bell is. True, hearing of human sacrifice
- 11:56in the bell is true. I was unsure of it at. 1st but I
- 12:01looked up the. Wonderful, wonderful Korean
- 12:03historian Robert Neff and found articles of his and it, yeah,
- 12:07that sort of thing happened in Japan.
- 12:09They had it with bridges. Where they had to.
- 12:10Bury a person alive in there. So sad story but I did like it
- 12:15and the podcast shout out is to our show hosted by Conscious and
