Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Yeah, me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:12Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, the after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 0:31Speaker 1: a little thing we like to call the after party.
- 0:34Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 0:36Speaker 1: the party, the bridge to get you from one full
- 0:38Speaker 1: episode of Disgraceland to the other, the backyard to dig
- 0:41Speaker 1: into the dirt. On this bonus episode, we are talking
- 0:44Speaker 1: about this week's subject of the Disgraceland full episode, the
- 0:48Speaker 1: nineteen eighty six New York Mets. Also talking about the
- 0:52Speaker 1: greatest sports towns and sports movies, Sean Diddy Coombs's birthday
- 0:57Speaker 1: behind bars, and of course we are diving into your voicemails,
- 1:01Speaker 1: texts and more, and as always, a whole lot of rows.
- 1:05Speaker 1: All right, discoes, let's get into it. So when I
- 1:18Speaker 1: finished writing the eighty six Mets episode that you all
- 1:20Speaker 1: heard in your feed this week, I was convinced the
- 1:23Speaker 1: stars had aligned. The release of this episode would coincide
- 1:27Speaker 1: with a twenty twenty four World Series championship for the
- 1:31Speaker 1: New York Mets. I was certain that it would be
- 1:34Speaker 1: what the Grateful Dead called synchronicity, and why wouldn't it be.
- 1:38Speaker 1: The Dead were San Francisco Giants fans, and the Mets
- 1:42Speaker 1: had the San Francisco Giants formerly the New York Giants
- 1:45Speaker 1: in their DNA. The orange and the Mets uniforms is
- 1:48Speaker 1: a nod to the former residents of New York's Polo Grounds,
- 1:51Speaker 1: but you knew that because you just listened to the
- 1:53Speaker 1: latest episode of Disgrace Sam. But more important, this year,
- 1:57Speaker 1: the Mets were playing like a team of destiny. They
- 2:01Speaker 1: came back from like eleven games out of first place
- 2:04Speaker 1: to make the playoffs in the final days of the season,
- 2:06Speaker 1: and then they promptly disposed of the Philadelphia Phillies, who
- 2:10Speaker 1: were by any account a much better team. Then, of course,
- 2:14Speaker 1: they ran into the buzzsaw that was the La Dodgers,
- 2:17Speaker 1: the team that once played at Brooklyn's at Its Field,
- 2:21Speaker 1: and the team that the Mets took the blue from
- 2:24Speaker 1: for their uniforms. Again, you'd know that if you listen
- 2:27Speaker 1: to this week's episode on the Mets. So my point,
- 2:31Speaker 1: my plan did not work, but it almost did. It
- 2:34Speaker 1: almost did. If the Mets cut by the Dodgers and
- 2:35Speaker 1: into the World Series. If the series went to six
- 2:39Speaker 1: or seven games, again a big assumption on my part,
- 2:42Speaker 1: then this week's Disgraceland episode on the Mets would have
- 2:45Speaker 1: been released while the Mets were playing or had just
- 2:48Speaker 1: finished their title run against the New York Yankees, who
- 2:54Speaker 1: in a lot of ways are the villains of this
- 2:56Speaker 1: week's episode. So it was almost perfect perfect. It was
- 3:01Speaker 1: too perfect, though, and of course it didn't work out
- 3:04Speaker 1: that way. Just like in sports, we don't get what
- 3:07Speaker 1: we want a lot of the time. As a Red
- 3:09Speaker 1: Sox and Patriots fan these days, of course, I know
- 3:12Speaker 1: that all too well. And given the week that we're
- 3:15Speaker 1: living through right now, a lot of Americans are waking
- 3:17Speaker 1: up this morning and they're not getting what they wanted
- 3:19Speaker 1: for other reasons that I'm not going to talk about.
- 3:20Speaker 1: But as I record this, I'm not sure which Americans
- 3:24Speaker 1: those are, But either way, my heart goes out to
- 3:27Speaker 1: them just the same, just as it would to the
- 3:28Speaker 1: fans of losing team that my team disposed of. That's,
- 3:33Speaker 1: of course, good sportsmanship, that's grace. That's what we need
- 3:36Speaker 1: more of, not only in sports but in life and
- 3:38Speaker 1: especially in this country right now. But back to the
- 3:41Speaker 1: perfection that was to be the timing of this Mets
- 3:46Speaker 1: episode release. I love this episode. I love it the
- 3:50Speaker 1: true crime story that is adjacent to the story detailing
- 3:52Speaker 1: of the debauchery of the New York Mets, and the
- 3:54Speaker 1: theme of corruption the whole thing. When I was researching it,
- 3:58Speaker 1: I was like, damn it, this would make a great
- 4:00Speaker 1: sports movie. And as I was listening to the episode
- 4:03Speaker 1: this morning in preparation of talking to you guys right now,
- 4:06Speaker 1: thinking about it all, I started thinking about the great
- 4:08Speaker 1: sports movies, the greatest ones of all time, and this
- 4:11Speaker 1: should have been the question of the week. The question
- 4:13Speaker 1: of the week that we're going to get to later
- 4:14Speaker 1: in the episode was what are the great sports towns?
- 4:17Speaker 1: Because the Mets episode is very much, very very very
- 4:20Speaker 1: much about Queens, New York, so that was an obvious one.
- 4:23Speaker 1: But I kind of like this one better. I liked
- 4:25Speaker 1: the question of what are the greatest sports movies of
- 4:27Speaker 1: all time? And it got me thinking about that answer.
- 4:29Speaker 1: So I looked it up and Rolling Stone, surprisingly they
- 4:32Speaker 1: list the top thirty. It's a pretty great list, I
- 4:34Speaker 1: gotta say for Rolling Stone, I'm actually very surprised most
- 4:38Speaker 1: I've seen most of these films, I've seen a few
- 4:40Speaker 1: that I haven't that I absolutely should. But more important,
- 4:43Speaker 1: I'm super interested to know what you guys think of
- 4:46Speaker 1: this list, but also which sports movies are your favorites.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Number ten on the list, Friday Night Lights. I've actually
- 4:52Speaker 1: never seen the movie. I've seen parts of the television series,
- 4:54Speaker 1: which I liked, not enough to finish it. Now I'm compelled.
- 4:58Speaker 1: I'm reminded I should say to see the to see
- 5:00Speaker 1: Friday Night Lights. I'm sure some of you guys have Senna. No,
- 5:04Speaker 1: I've never even heard of this. This is number nine, Senna.
- 5:07Speaker 1: It's a Grand Prix racing movie. Number eight though, when
- 5:10Speaker 1: we were Kings. Great documentary, but Muhammad Ali and George
- 5:13Speaker 1: Foreman fighting in Africa. This takes place in nineteen seventy four.
- 5:18Speaker 1: I've seen this before in parts. I've never sat down
- 5:22Speaker 1: and watched the whole thing, but I've loved it. I'm
- 5:24Speaker 1: pretty sure this is the one that has a fantastic
- 5:26Speaker 1: James Brown performance. Number seven. This is way too low
- 5:30Speaker 1: on the list. This might be top two for me.
- 5:34Speaker 1: Top three Slapshot Okay, just incredible movie. Probably my favorite
- 5:40Speaker 1: Paul Newman performance of all time. I love this fucking movie.
- 5:44Speaker 1: If this is on, I will stop whatever I'm doing
- 5:47Speaker 1: and I will watch it. I watched this movie a
- 5:49Speaker 1: couple times a year without fail, every single year. It
- 5:51Speaker 1: is that good. One of the great drama ties of
- 5:55Speaker 1: all time, probably more of a comedy, just incredible. I'm
- 5:58Speaker 1: pretty sure that the Handsome Brothers' grandkids go to my church.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Not officially, but there are two dudes that just God
- 6:05Speaker 1: bless them. They look they look just like these dudes,
- 6:08Speaker 1: all right. Number six Bull Durham, incredible baseball movie. Might
- 6:12Speaker 1: be the best baseball movie. That's number six. That feels
- 6:15Speaker 1: low too, But this this list is stacked. I love
- 6:19Speaker 1: Bull Durham because it's written, obviously with so much awareness
- 6:24Speaker 1: of inside baseball, baseball history, what it's like to be
- 6:28Speaker 1: a journeyman baseball player. You get a real different look
- 6:32Speaker 1: at baseball through Bull Durham, through the eyes of a
- 6:34Speaker 1: sort of of the working class ball players who make
- 6:37Speaker 1: up the lower leagues. And awesome performances by Tim Roberts,
- 6:43Speaker 1: Susan Sarandon, and of course Kevin Costner just tremendous. Also
- 6:49Speaker 1: number five. This feels, this feels right, this ranking, and
- 6:55Speaker 1: it's so silly that you might think it doesn't belong
- 6:57Speaker 1: on the list, but it absolutely belongs on the list.
- 7:00Speaker 1: And it's Caddy shack Okay, just tremendous. So much of
- 7:04Speaker 1: this movie has infiltrated our culture, the way we talk.
- 7:07Speaker 1: We don't even realize it. There's so many jokes that
- 7:10Speaker 1: we tell that are rooted in this movie. I'm not
- 7:13Speaker 1: even a golfer and I've never golfed in my life,
- 7:16Speaker 1: and I love this movie. Number four, Now, this one
- 7:18Speaker 1: might be the best, might be the best sports movie
- 7:21Speaker 1: of all time. In the running for one of the
- 7:24Speaker 1: greatest movies of all time, I would argue Raging Bull incredible,
- 7:28Speaker 1: of course, Robert de Niro, Martin Scorsese. I mean, I
- 7:32Speaker 1: don't even know what I can say. You know what
- 7:33Speaker 1: I'm gonna say. We have a Martin Scorsese episode coming
- 7:36Speaker 1: up in a couple of weeks for Thanksgiving, and it
- 7:39Speaker 1: delves into Raging Bull just a little bit. It's more
- 7:41Speaker 1: about the band and the Last Waltz, thus the Thanksgiving angle.
- 7:45Speaker 1: But I will have more to say about Martin Scorsese
- 7:47Speaker 1: and Raging Bull in the weeks to come. Number three. Now,
- 7:50Speaker 1: this one, this one has a special special place close
- 7:55Speaker 1: to my heart right now as an adult, as an
- 7:58Speaker 1: adult man with two boys who were playing baseball, and
- 8:02Speaker 1: it had that same, a similar place next to my
- 8:06Speaker 1: heart as a young boy who played baseball. Bad News
- 8:10Speaker 1: Bears just incredible. I was actually at the ballpark last night.
- 8:14Speaker 1: I was at two ballparks last night. I was at
- 8:16Speaker 1: my son, my six year old's first playoff game. They lost.
- 8:21Speaker 1: He struck out three times. It cut me up on
- 8:24Speaker 1: the inside. Three strikeouts. Tough. He doesn't usually do that,
- 8:27Speaker 1: and I got a bone to pick with the coaches,
- 8:30Speaker 1: but that's another story. And then my ten year old,
- 8:33Speaker 1: he had a scrimmage, actually supposed to have a scrimmage,
- 8:35Speaker 1: but it ended up being practiced, so I had to
- 8:37Speaker 1: bring him over there. I had to cut out of
- 8:39Speaker 1: my six year olds game early, head over to my
- 8:41Speaker 1: ten year olds field bring him there, and I was
- 8:43Speaker 1: watching the team play. Their coach is just fucking awesome,
- 8:46Speaker 1: and he reminds me of Walter Mathow, like a modern
- 8:49Speaker 1: day version of math Walter Mathow from Bad News Bears.
- 8:52Speaker 1: He's always ripping butts in the parking lot. He's got
- 8:54Speaker 1: a really easy going way about him. But he's just
- 8:57Speaker 1: a great, great coach. Two of his kids playing on team.
- 9:00Speaker 1: And the kids on the team they're they're ten to
- 9:02Speaker 1: twelve year olds, and they have this there's this weird
- 9:05Speaker 1: age where they're they're they're pretty profane. They don't think
- 9:09Speaker 1: we're hearing what they're saying. Uh, they're just lots of
- 9:13Speaker 1: like dirty sort of locker room humor going on for
- 9:16Speaker 1: ten and twelve year olds, but they don't quite know
- 9:18Speaker 1: what they're saying. You can tell they're hearing it from
- 9:19Speaker 1: older kids. It's pretty hysterical. And they have all the
- 9:23Speaker 1: archetypes on the team that you would that you would
- 9:26Speaker 1: cast in a movie. It's hysterical. They get like the
- 9:28Speaker 1: one big kid, his name is George and he you know,
- 9:31Speaker 1: they're the Yankees, that's the team, which sucks, but that's
- 9:35Speaker 1: what they are. And he's clearly fashioning himself. He's a lefty.
- 9:38Speaker 1: He's clearly fashioning himself after Babe Ruth. He even wears
- 9:41Speaker 1: an old school button down pinstripe Yankees jersey. And they
- 9:46Speaker 1: got like the the fast talking, smart ass pitcher, the
- 9:51Speaker 1: juvenile delink wins, the two ballers. Uh, it's just they're
- 9:56Speaker 1: talking shit all the time. It's just it's amazing it's hysteric. Anyways,
- 10:01Speaker 1: Bad News Bears, great movie. Huge digression there. I apologize.
- 10:04Speaker 1: If you haven't seen Bad News Bears and you're thinking,
- 10:07Speaker 1: you haven't seen it in a while, and you've got
- 10:09Speaker 1: a young kid and you want to show it to him, don't. Okay,
- 10:13Speaker 1: we grew up in a different era. You can't show
- 10:15Speaker 1: this movie to your kid. You cannot explain the profanity,
- 10:18Speaker 1: the profanity in the inappropriate problematic language that happens in
- 10:24Speaker 1: this movie. That said, it's still a great fucking movie.
- 10:28Speaker 1: So at some point, yeah, but if your kid's you know, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen,
- 10:32Speaker 1: I would pass, and definitely not if they're younger. Number
- 10:34Speaker 1: two on the list Rocky. Okay, Rocky, Rocky transcends sports movies. Okay.
- 10:41Speaker 1: I like to say, and I've said this for years,
- 10:44Speaker 1: even before I was in front of a microphone, that
- 10:47Speaker 1: Rocky is not only the greatest boxing movie and maybe
- 10:51Speaker 1: the greatest sports movie, but I believe it is the
- 10:54Speaker 1: greatest love story that has taken place in a movie.
- 10:57Speaker 1: And I've talked about this in the past before, it's
- 10:59Speaker 1: worth repeating. I think at the end of the movie,
- 11:02Speaker 1: when the athlete gets what he wants sort of all
- 11:06Speaker 1: he wants to do. You know, he goes through the
- 11:09Speaker 1: thing that he's you know, the goal, it's achieved, but
- 11:11Speaker 1: all he wants to do in the end, all he
- 11:13Speaker 1: wants is his Adrian. That's it. That's it, and it's beautiful.
- 11:20Speaker 1: And you know, as a kid, we grew up with
- 11:22Speaker 1: Rocky and we loved it. We were out in the yard,
- 11:23Speaker 1: We're pretending to be Apollo Creed and Thunderlips and all that.
- 11:27Speaker 1: But as an adult, when I went back to watch
- 11:29Speaker 1: the first Rocky, it just hit me like, Hey, this
- 11:32Speaker 1: isn't a sports movie. This is a love story. I
- 11:34Speaker 1: wonder if you guys agree with me on that.
- 11:35Speaker 3: Now.
- 11:35Speaker 1: Number one, it's a documentary and I wouldn't have put
- 11:39Speaker 1: it here. Okay, I would not have put this at
- 11:41Speaker 1: the number one spot, but I get why Rolling Stone
- 11:44Speaker 1: did it. Hoop Dreams. Have you seen Hoop Dreams. It's
- 11:48Speaker 1: an incredible basketball documentary, like really, really, really incredible. I
- 11:52Speaker 1: had it on a couple of weeks ago. It's on
- 11:53Speaker 1: the Criterion Channel. I'm not sure it still is, but
- 11:55Speaker 1: I just had it on playing in the background. I've
- 11:57Speaker 1: seen it a couple times before, and both my sons
- 12:00Speaker 1: got sucked into it. It's from the early nineties. It's
- 12:02Speaker 1: got a super gritty feel to it, so it's not
- 12:04Speaker 1: the type of thing that would suck in a ten
- 12:06Speaker 1: and a six year old, but it did because it
- 12:08Speaker 1: is that compelling and it's a great, great story. I
- 12:12Speaker 1: was thinking about how I would describe it to you guys,
- 12:14Speaker 1: and I realized that Rolling Stone just really nails it.
- 12:17Speaker 1: I'm going to read it verbatim from the Rolling Stone
- 12:19Speaker 1: issue here because if any of you haven't seen it,
- 12:22Speaker 1: I want to do it justice in the description so
- 12:24Speaker 1: that you do. Go and watch Hoop Dreams. Okay, this
- 12:26Speaker 1: is what they say. They got it in the number
- 12:28Speaker 1: one slot of the top thirty movies of all time,
- 12:31Speaker 1: they say. Initially inspired by its makers shared obsession with basketball,
- 12:35Speaker 1: this story of Inner City Dreams started as an idea
- 12:38Speaker 1: for a thirty minute nonfiction short about playground hoopsters. It
- 12:42Speaker 1: then evolved into a three hour odyssey about high school
- 12:45Speaker 1: kids William Gates and Arthur ag as they try to
- 12:48Speaker 1: make their way to the NBA. A landmark American documentary,
- 12:51Speaker 1: This compassionate labor of love from filmmaker Steve James, Peter
- 12:55Speaker 1: Gilbert and Frederick Marx has plenty of on court action
- 12:58Speaker 1: in suspense, It's possible no single free throw has ever
- 13:02Speaker 1: been so nerve wracking in the history of cinema. But
- 13:05Speaker 1: Hoop Dreams is even more powerful as a look at poverty,
- 13:08Speaker 1: racial inequality, and adolescents, the agonies of everyday life that
- 13:12Speaker 1: sports only occasionally help us forget. Great writing, great description,
- 13:18Speaker 1: great movie, great documentary. Go see Hoop Dreams if you haven't,
- 13:21Speaker 1: and let me know six one seven nine oh six
- 13:24Speaker 1: six six three eight at Disgrace Slam Pod, what you
- 13:28Speaker 1: think the greatest sports movie of all time is? And why?
- 13:32Speaker 1: And I know we get another Question of the Week happening.
- 13:34Speaker 1: Now we're about to get into the Ilia episode, but
- 13:36Speaker 1: I want to keep talking about this a little bit.
- 13:37Speaker 1: It will be a little, you know, a little backburner
- 13:40Speaker 1: question topic that we're dealing with. Best sports movie. Hit
- 13:43Speaker 1: me up and let me know, all right, As promised
- 13:46Speaker 1: every week, going to give you guys a little bit
- 13:47Speaker 1: of a Diddy update here. This past Monday, with Sean Combs'
- 13:51Speaker 1: fifty fifth birthday, he spent it in jail. Of course,
- 13:54Speaker 1: his kids shared a video singing Happy Birthday to him
- 13:57Speaker 1: over the phone. You can hear him on the other
- 13:59Speaker 1: end saying that he them, that he's proud of them,
- 14:01Speaker 1: that he's thanking them for their support. And a part
- 14:05Speaker 1: of me right now feels a little bit bad because
- 14:08Speaker 1: I can hear the cynicism in my voice when I'm
- 14:10Speaker 1: depicting what Diddy was saying. And that is because I
- 14:13Speaker 1: think that there are a few characters in the history
- 14:15Speaker 1: of the music industry, the entertainment industry who are more
- 14:18Speaker 1: full of shit than Sean Combs. Okay, I've been researching
- 14:22Speaker 1: this guy pretty heavily now for the last two weeks
- 14:24Speaker 1: for this episode that I'm going to bring you in
- 14:25Speaker 1: early January, and the guy is disgusting to me. Everything
- 14:30Speaker 1: about him is a fucking lie, I believe, and I
- 14:33Speaker 1: believe that he is not going to get away with
- 14:37Speaker 1: even a portion of what he's been accused of. It's
- 14:40Speaker 1: hard for me to take Sean Dittycomb's at his word,
- 14:45Speaker 1: even when he's expressing kindness and warmth towards his children,
- 14:50Speaker 1: based on what he's been accused of, and based on
- 14:53Speaker 1: the research that I've been doing over the last few weeks. Okay,
- 14:57Speaker 1: there's a witness for this is news. There's a witness
- 14:59Speaker 1: who's come out recently in his stating that he has
- 15:02Speaker 1: tapes that will shock all of us. Now, this is different. Now,
- 15:05Speaker 1: we've heard from we've heard from federal prosecutors, we've heard
- 15:09Speaker 1: from Tony Busby, we've heard from attorneys about these tapes.
- 15:14Speaker 1: This is now a witness who has come out recently
- 15:17Speaker 1: again and is stating that he has tapes that will
- 15:19Speaker 1: shock all of us. The tapes in question that this
- 15:21Speaker 1: witness alleges show, did he having sex with two miners
- 15:26Speaker 1: who are celebrities? Okay, two underage boys. Now we can
- 15:33Speaker 1: all speculate on who that might be. But to me,
- 15:37Speaker 1: the actual news here is that this came out during
- 15:39Speaker 1: the witness's recent grand jury testimony recent okay, not the
- 15:43Speaker 1: grand jury testimony that led to the federal indictment recent
- 15:47Speaker 1: And when that news came out Seawan Colmbs is the
- 15:49Speaker 1: legal team, they moved quick, very quickly on Sunday, actually
- 15:54Speaker 1: over the weekend, no less, and file the gag order
- 15:56Speaker 1: against this witness and against all potential witnesses. They move again,
- 16:02Speaker 1: they move very quickly, and they filed that gag order
- 16:05Speaker 1: on a Sunday, so they're very motivated. They could be
- 16:09Speaker 1: afraid of something. What are they afraid of is the question. Well,
- 16:13Speaker 1: could be that they're afraid of what this witness obviously
- 16:16Speaker 1: has to say, but it could also be that they're
- 16:19Speaker 1: afraid that the witness, you know, if he's lying, if
- 16:23Speaker 1: he's making this up, that he could, if what he's
- 16:27Speaker 1: going to say becomes public, potentially poison the potential jury
- 16:32Speaker 1: pool for the trial that's coming up supposedly in May.
- 16:36Speaker 1: So the prosecutors, of course, have objected to this gag order.
- 16:41Speaker 1: No word on what the judge is going to say.
- 16:43Speaker 1: I think we're going to hear this week from the
- 16:45Speaker 1: judge on this, and I'll let you know as soon
- 16:47Speaker 1: as I know, or at least i'll let you know
- 16:48Speaker 1: in the next episode of the After Party here. But
- 16:51Speaker 1: what we do know, and again this is news. The
- 16:54Speaker 1: federal grand jury is hearing new evidence in this case
- 16:58Speaker 1: this week, which means that the current federal indictment could
- 17:02Speaker 1: result in a superseding indictment, which could mean more charges
- 17:06Speaker 1: against Sean Combs, and that will likely mean that the
- 17:09Speaker 1: May fifth trial date will be delayed. Now also related
- 17:13Speaker 1: to Diddy, as promised, I'm not going to eat up
- 17:15Speaker 1: this whole episode with Diddy News. But I do have
- 17:18Speaker 1: some first hand anecdotal news on Kevin Hart relative to
- 17:22Speaker 1: Sean Coles, which I'm going to talk about in the
- 17:23Speaker 1: all access portion of this episode. I'll be right back.
- 17:26Speaker 2: After this with your voicemails and your texts.
- 17:47Speaker 1: All right, we are back six one seven nine oh
- 17:49Speaker 1: six six six three eight. The question of the week
- 17:51Speaker 1: this week was what is the greatest sports town in
- 17:54Speaker 1: America or anywhere for that matter. Let me know what
- 17:57Speaker 1: we'll want to hear now from the four to four
- 17:59Speaker 1: to zero.
- 17:59Speaker 3: On this.
- 18:01Speaker 4: Hi Jake, my name is Jefferson. I'm a pretty new listener.
- 18:05Speaker 4: I live in the two one six currently, I'm originally
- 18:08Speaker 4: from the five to one three, and I just listened
- 18:11Speaker 4: to the episode about the eighty six Mets, which, as
- 18:14Speaker 4: a man of a certain age, I was a huge
- 18:18Speaker 4: fan of the eighty six Mets and eighty six World
- 18:22Speaker 4: Series is, with without a doubt, one of my favorite
- 18:24Speaker 4: world series that I've ever had the opportunity to watch.
- 18:29Speaker 4: I am a died in the wool Reds fan, and
- 18:31Speaker 4: I cannot argue that Cincinnati is the best sports town,
- 18:36Speaker 4: but I do want to make a case that Opening
- 18:39Speaker 4: Day in Cincinnati is very different than Opening Day in
- 18:43Speaker 4: a lot of other cities. It's just a very very
- 18:46Speaker 4: special day. And I know we've had our share of
- 18:50Speaker 4: success in Cincinnati. We are a small market team. We've
- 18:53Speaker 4: also had our share of disgraces there as well. There
- 18:57Speaker 4: might be some fodder there for some future episodes, but
- 19:00Speaker 4: I would love to hear you you take on. But
- 19:03Speaker 4: either way, you know, again, I don't want to make
- 19:06Speaker 4: a case that we're the best sports city. But Opening
- 19:09Speaker 4: Day in Cincinnati is just head and shoulders above opening
- 19:14Speaker 4: Day anywhere else in Major League Baseball. If you ever
- 19:17Speaker 4: have the chance to check it out, you should. It's
- 19:19Speaker 4: just a great all day celebration, citywide celebration. Keep up
- 19:24Speaker 4: the good work. Love listening to the show Rock and
- 19:27Speaker 4: Roller four four to rozero out in Cincinnati.
- 19:31Speaker 1: This is really interesting to me because we think of
- 19:34Speaker 1: Boston as a small sports as a small town, Okay,
- 19:37Speaker 1: but it's obviously it's not. It's one of the world class.
- 19:41Speaker 1: It's a world class city. It really is, even though
- 19:44Speaker 1: it's small geographically and you know, there's not that many
- 19:47Speaker 1: people there relatives to New York City. But when you
- 19:49Speaker 1: talk about a place like Cincinnati, I get it and
- 19:52Speaker 1: in a way, I hear what you're saying, and I'm
- 19:54Speaker 1: envious of you because the Red Sox have become so mammoth.
- 19:59Speaker 1: The brand, the whole experience has become so huge in
- 20:02Speaker 1: the last two and a half decades, since the new
- 20:05Speaker 1: ownership took over, and since we won the World Series
- 20:07Speaker 1: in four that it's taken on, it's kind of lost
- 20:11Speaker 1: a lot of its small town appeal, small town, small ballparks,
- 20:17Speaker 1: small You know, we're not the New York Yankees. We
- 20:19Speaker 1: used to think of ourselves like that, like an underdog,
- 20:22Speaker 1: and we don't anymore. And Opening Day to me, used
- 20:24Speaker 1: to mean something different than it does now. To your point,
- 20:26Speaker 1: So I can't. I don't know exactly what you're talking about,
- 20:28Speaker 1: but I can. I can sense it in your in
- 20:30Speaker 1: your voicemail. I can, I can. I can understand that
- 20:33Speaker 1: there's a specialness to it that we don't quite get
- 20:36Speaker 1: in the bigger market. So, like I said, in a way,
- 20:38Speaker 1: I'm kind of envious of that. Good, good voicemail. Thank
- 20:40Speaker 1: you for calling in. All right, let's hear this voicemail
- 20:42Speaker 1: from the six to one to nine.
- 20:44Speaker 5: Hey, Dake, this is done in the six' one nine
- 20:47Speaker 5: formerly of the seven seventy three. I think Chicago is
- 20:51Speaker 5: the greatest sports city in the world. If you look
- 20:53Speaker 5: at all the history of all their teams, it's just
- 20:57Speaker 5: hard to argue with that. I lived in Chicago during
- 21:00Speaker 5: when the Cubs won the World Series after their long curse,
- 21:04Speaker 5: and it was one of the most incredible nights ever.
- 21:07Speaker 5: I mean, the whole city roared when they won. But
- 21:10Speaker 5: they have so many great teams and such a long
- 21:13Speaker 5: history of all their teams that I think that they're
- 21:15Speaker 5: the best. Thanks Car all you do. It's a great show.
- 21:18Speaker 5: I enjoy listening.
- 21:20Speaker 1: Thanks bye, Okay. Chicago, great Sportstown, great music town, just
- 21:26Speaker 1: great city. One of my favorite cities on the planet.
- 21:28Speaker 1: I love it. Chicago's unlike anywhere else in the world really,
- 21:34Speaker 1: you know. And it's yeah, I know Boston is as well,
- 21:36Speaker 1: but there's just something that's there's a bigness, there's a bravado,
- 21:40Speaker 1: there's a there's a thing about Chicago that I just
- 21:42Speaker 1: absolutely love. And as a kid who grew up in
- 21:45Speaker 1: the eighties, Michael Jordan, my god, I'll just you know,
- 21:49Speaker 1: for that alone, for Jordan alone, you've got to call
- 21:53Speaker 1: Chicago a great sports town. Greatest basketball player of all time,
- 21:57Speaker 1: you know, just tremendous, tremendous team, the Chicago Bulls, and
- 22:02Speaker 1: I was happy to see the Cubs when they want it.
- 22:04Speaker 1: You know, I begrudgingly not beggretgially. You know I can
- 22:07Speaker 1: get with the Bears somewhat, you know, growing up in
- 22:10Speaker 1: the eighties, right eighty six Bears. Thanks for the call.
- 22:13Speaker 1: All right, let's hear from the four four.
- 22:14Speaker 3: Oh hey Jakes, my name is Samantha. I've been a
- 22:19Speaker 3: very long time listener, like Jerry Lee Lewis episode. Yeah,
- 22:24Speaker 3: I was responding to the sports team one whenever saun disease.
- 22:29Speaker 3: But I am in Cleveland, and I got to give
- 22:35Speaker 3: my CD credit. We are committed to our sports teams,
- 22:41Speaker 3: regardless of how many times they lose, how bad they are,
- 22:45Speaker 3: how many quarterbacks we get rid of, how many great
- 22:49Speaker 3: a baseball teams we trade away after we don't win
- 22:51Speaker 3: the World Series. We are mistakes on the lake. But
- 22:57Speaker 3: I think that is a good example of a team
- 23:01Speaker 3: who will stand behind there the sports team anyway, the
- 23:07Speaker 3: one is probably not it, but I agree that I'd
- 23:10Speaker 3: contribute because I am proud of us.
- 23:13Speaker 1: Hey, Samantha out there in Cleveland, I got a lot
- 23:16Speaker 1: of respect for Cleveland fans. I really do similar to
- 23:19Speaker 1: Buffalo and Detroit in a lot of ways. You know
- 23:23Speaker 1: it's gonna happen, and honestly, you don't know what you
- 23:27Speaker 1: have right now. It's it's there's something galvanizing about being
- 23:31Speaker 1: the underdog, and uh, I think Cleveland's gonna pull it
- 23:34Speaker 1: together one way or another at some point, and you're
- 23:36Speaker 1: gonna be incredibly gratified when it happens. Thanks for the
- 23:39Speaker 1: call six one seven nine oh six six six three
- 23:42Speaker 1: eight to leave me a voicemail. Got another one from
- 23:45Speaker 1: Chicago here the four row two. Damn Chicago showing up.
- 23:49Speaker 1: Best sports city is Chicago. Folk show the Cubs, the Socks,
- 23:52Speaker 1: the Bulls, the Blackhawks, the Bears may not have the
- 23:55Speaker 1: best records, but their fan base, except for the Socks,
- 23:58Speaker 1: they make the games in the city electric. And as
- 24:01Speaker 1: a life long Cubs fan, I will wait until next
- 24:04Speaker 1: year and we will have another World Series winning my lifetime.
- 24:07Speaker 1: I like to think that the Chicago Cubs can have
- 24:08Speaker 1: two baseball teams, of Boston can have two baseball teams.
- 24:11Speaker 1: I really want the Expos franchise to be come back
- 24:15Speaker 1: to life in Boston as a national League team, you know,
- 24:18Speaker 1: just as Chicago has the White Sox and the Cubs
- 24:21Speaker 1: and of course the Yankees and of course the Mets.
- 24:23Speaker 1: I think the Boston market could sustain to Boston sports franchises.
- 24:30Speaker 1: Of course, the Henry ownership would never allow it, but
- 24:34Speaker 1: you know, I'm kind of jealous of Chicago. Six to one,
- 24:37Speaker 1: oh Rights, and hey, I love this Graceland and I
- 24:38Speaker 1: want to suggest an episode that you can do on Ditty.
- 24:41Speaker 1: Do another episode because a lot of stuff has happened
- 24:43Speaker 1: with Diddy since the last Ditty episode. Yes, that's true,
- 24:46Speaker 1: and you will be happy to know six to one
- 24:48Speaker 1: to oh that I am researching the next Didty episode
- 24:51Speaker 1: right now. I've been on it for the last week
- 24:52Speaker 1: and a half. I'll finish research this week. I will
- 24:55Speaker 1: write it next week and it will be sound designed, mixed,
- 24:59Speaker 1: and released the first week of January. And it's gonna
- 25:05Speaker 1: cover It's gonna be pretty much about the Cassie everything
- 25:09Speaker 1: from the Cassie accusation, uh to the indictment, and I'm
- 25:12Speaker 1: gonna cover everything in between there. I'm gonna try to
- 25:15Speaker 1: in thirty minutes. We shall see, and then there'll be
- 25:17Speaker 1: a couple more Diddy episodes throughout next year. Hey, Jake,
- 25:19Speaker 1: it's Christa Kay from the seven two four aka the
- 25:22Speaker 1: Suburbs of the Best Sports Town, Pittsburgh. In total, we
- 25:25Speaker 1: have six Super Bowl wins, five Stanley Cup wins, in
- 25:28Speaker 1: five World Series wins. Holy shit, the Pirates have five
- 25:32Speaker 1: World Series wins, not to mention some of the most
- 25:34Speaker 1: iconic names in sports history, Roberto Clemente, Mario Lemieux, Franco
- 25:38Speaker 1: Harris just to name a few. Oh, you can't forget
- 25:41Speaker 1: to mention the terrible towel that is literally everywhere Pittsburgh wins. Jake,
- 25:45Speaker 1: it's what we do. You know what, Christy Kay can't.
- 25:49Speaker 1: I can't argue with you there. Pittsburgh's hard to fuck with.
- 25:52Speaker 1: They really, truly are. Steelers are always good. Even when
- 25:56Speaker 1: they're bad, they're still scary. They always kind of pull together,
- 25:59Speaker 1: so they always have some sort of team. And you
- 26:02Speaker 1: can't fuck with six Super Bowl wins. I'm shocked to
- 26:04Speaker 1: see that the Pirates have five World Series wins. I
- 26:07Speaker 1: did not know that. That is just crazy to me.
- 26:10Speaker 1: Of course, the Stanley Cup wins, I knew about that.
- 26:13Speaker 1: And what's remarkable here which you have not mentioned, Chris
- 26:16Speaker 1: to Ka is at Pittsburgh is not big. It is
- 26:18Speaker 1: a small city and have that kind of winning legacy.
- 26:21Speaker 1: You got something going for yourselves over there, So props
- 26:23Speaker 1: to Pittsburgh from a Bostonian. Six one seven nine oh
- 26:27Speaker 1: six six six three eight at Disgracelam pod for some dms, guys,

- 26:41Speaker 1: know you got any recommendations. I want to hear about

- 27:43Speaker 1: I was just listening to the bonus episode where you
- 27:45Speaker 1: were looking for book recommendations for December. You should read
- 27:49Speaker 1: what the hell nos for a two? But it's not
- 27:52Speaker 1: spelled like nos fara tuo oh nos n Os four
- 27:55Speaker 1: A two by Joe Hill. Joe Hill, I believe this
- 27:57Speaker 1: is me talking now? Is Stephen kings one? Leana goes
- 28:01Speaker 1: on to say it's a Christmas y and has criminal
- 28:04Speaker 1: subject matter. Also, yep, here we go Joe Hill as
- 28:06Speaker 1: Tabitha and Stephen Kingk's son. That's gonna be worth reading, right,
- 28:09Speaker 1: If not Stephen Kingk's Doctors Sleep is also a good
- 28:12Speaker 1: great podcast. All right, Liliana, I'll take your recommendation. I'll
- 28:15Speaker 1: bring it back to the discos in the chat on
- 28:17Speaker 1: Patreon see what they think of Nos Faratu Nos four
- 28:21Speaker 1: A two. Disgrace sampod at gmail dot com. Guys, hit
- 28:25Speaker 1: me up, all right. Get this one from Michael lane Heath,
- 28:29Speaker 1: who writes in about the Cramps episode. Hey, Hey, Jake
- 28:33Speaker 1: loving the Cramps episode of Disgraceland as one of the
- 28:35Speaker 1: actually more than ten fans in Washington. D c DC
- 28:38Speaker 1: was actually for a time the Cramp's second home outside
- 28:41Speaker 1: of New York City in the late seventies. We'll never
- 28:43Speaker 1: forget them playing at a place called Psycadelli in the
- 28:45Speaker 1: suburb of Bethesda, Maryland, literally a deli at the front
- 28:48Speaker 1: of the club and in the back they were playing.
- 28:50Speaker 1: They were connected with the local band the Sickie Boys
- 28:52Speaker 1: excuse me, the Slicky Boys, who's guitarist Kim Kaine was
- 28:56Speaker 1: once approached to be second guitarists for them after Kid
- 28:59Speaker 1: Congo left and we all ended up at the Classic
- 29:02Speaker 1: Diner nearby, complete with those mini juke boxes in the boots.
- 29:05Speaker 1: We all sat up drinking coffee, eating pie, talking about
- 29:08Speaker 1: old rock and roll records into the dawn. And they,
- 29:10Speaker 1: of course also were the equivalent to the Pistols in Manchester.
- 29:14Speaker 1: On February seventy nine when they played a benefit for
- 29:16Speaker 1: the Georgetown University FM freeform station WGTB, all of the
- 29:21Speaker 1: folks that were part of the Discord scene were there
- 29:23Speaker 1: and had their asses set afire. Only sorry you forgot
- 29:27Speaker 1: to mention the presence of Miriam Lena in her part
- 29:30Speaker 1: as drummer by the way, Pam and Nick Knox, ruler
- 29:33Speaker 1: of the Norton Records Empire. Everything else, however, chef's kiss, sir,
- 29:37Speaker 1: thank you, mL Heath, San Francisco, ps. Is that theme
- 29:40Speaker 1: music yours? I dig yes, mL Heath, the theme music
- 29:43Speaker 1: is ours. I wrote that we recorded it with some friends,
- 29:47Speaker 1: broke into a studio at night, you know, made it
- 29:49Speaker 1: happen punk rock style. Thanks for the email. I was
- 29:54Speaker 1: aware of the DC connection to the Cramps, and if
- 29:58Speaker 1: you noticed, there was a little mentioned it. I do
- 30:01Speaker 1: believe I say DC Summers. I said something. I think
- 30:04Speaker 1: I said basement or something like that. And that's because
- 30:06Speaker 1: I was reading a recount recounting of a show by
- 30:09Speaker 1: Henry Rollins that he had seen when he was a kid,
- 30:11Speaker 1: and it might be the show that you're referencing here
- 30:13Speaker 1: from February nineteen seventy nine. I do mention Nick Knox,
- 30:17Speaker 1: and I do mention I believe I mentioned Pam. I
- 30:21Speaker 1: did not mention Miriam. Couldn't get to everybody just didn't
- 30:26Speaker 1: fit into the storytelling. But you know what, I You're right.
- 30:29Speaker 1: I should have mentioned them. I should have found a
- 30:30Speaker 1: way to do it. But this is so much info. Man,
- 30:33Speaker 1: Sometimes you just gotta keep following the protagonist, if you
- 30:36Speaker 1: know what I mean. All right, Disgrace lampod at gmail

- 31:05Speaker 1: listened to is the Black Sabbath episode. Hearing the infamous
- 31:08Speaker 1: batstory another ancient musical lore that I've already heard my
- 31:11Speaker 1: whole life told in a way that only Jay can
- 31:13Speaker 1: makes it feel like I am getting an exclusive listen

- 31:44Speaker 1: but it was the first one I read when I
- 31:45Speaker 1: pulled up in the Spotify app here. Ben Reynolds writes
- 31:48Speaker 1: in on Spotify dipping his little vic firth as a drummer.
- 31:51Speaker 1: This one made me giggle. Reminds me of one of
- 31:55Speaker 1: the more lassivy less I can't say this word, lasciviously
- 31:59Speaker 1: named drum rudimentar. Dude, fucking Ben. I don't know what

- 34:15Speaker 1: And also this week in particular, love your neighbor. Okay,
- 34:18Speaker 1: your neighbor is not the enemy. They just might not
- 34:20Speaker 1: agree with you. And that's all right, grace, patient's peace,
- 34:23Speaker 1: love and understanding, all right. In honor of this week's
- 34:26Speaker 1: episode subject on the eighty six Mets Me Ready to You.
