- 0:00Speaker 1: How are we feeling?
- 0:01Speaker 2: Hi.
- 0:01Speaker 3: I feel great.
- 0:02Speaker 2: How are you today?
- 0:03Speaker 4: I'm great. Man, what an intense show. Already renewed for
- 0:06Speaker 4: season two.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Yes.
- 0:08Speaker 4: Get that shuttered.
- 0:11Speaker 3: And I think it was this week you received a
- 0:15Speaker 3: Gotham TV Award for Outstanding Lead Performance in a Drama Series.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Yes, I did.
- 0:19Speaker 3: How about you?
- 0:22Speaker 4: Talk me through it. What does that picture evoke for you?
- 0:25Speaker 2: I mean, it was.
- 0:27Speaker 1: It was an insane moment because I just remember hearing
- 0:30Speaker 1: my name get called and I was like, oh, I won?
- 0:33Speaker 1: And I kind of like, I blacked out a little
- 0:35Speaker 1: bit and then I walked up on stage and I
- 0:37Speaker 1: was like, okay, I have to make sure, because I
- 0:39Speaker 1: prepared nothing, so of course.
- 0:40Speaker 2: And I was like, I have to make sure that
- 0:42Speaker 2: I list off everybody who helped me get here.
- 0:44Speaker 1: And so I thanked my team and the producers and
- 0:47Speaker 1: the cast of The Testaments. But I see that picture
- 0:50Speaker 1: and I just feel so happy because I was just
- 0:52Speaker 1: over the moon.
- 0:53Speaker 3: I mean, it's kind of a big responsibility. These Margaret
- 0:57Speaker 3: Atwood books, Handmaid's Tale debuted 10 years ago. The Testaments
- 1:02Speaker 3: was written in 2019 with a lot of the same
- 1:05Speaker 3: themes that are relevant today.
- 1:06Speaker 4: The patriarchy is still evil. People are clapping at.
- 1:13Speaker 1: That.
- 1:14Speaker 4: How did you feel with that responsibility to take on
- 1:17Speaker 4: that character, Agnes?
- 1:19Speaker 2: Well, I think it felt very.
- 1:23Speaker 1: You know what's crazy is I didn't feel very anxious
- 1:24Speaker 1: stepping into it because I knew that.
- 1:28Speaker 1: The whole cast and the whole crew going into it,
- 1:30Speaker 1: because I'd met a couple people beforehand, especially like Bruce Miller,
- 1:32Speaker 1: our showrunner, and I knew that they already were welcoming
- 1:38Speaker 1: me in with so much love and so much care.
- 1:40Speaker 2: And also just with incredible energy.
- 1:42Speaker 1: And so I kind of had that to relieve the
- 1:44Speaker 1: anxiety that I felt going into it, because it is
- 1:47Speaker 1: a massive responsibility. And just the source material alone, like
- 1:51Speaker 1: Margaret Atwood, incredible. And The Handmaid's Tale, the book, I
- 1:56Speaker 1: studied it in school. And even the TV show, like
- 1:58Speaker 1: it's so... And I was so loved for so many reasons,
- 2:02Speaker 1: so I really wanted to make sure that I did
- 2:04Speaker 1: right by her writing, right by the fans, and also
- 2:07Speaker 1: right by Hannah, because she is such a beloved character
- 2:10Speaker 1: as well.
- 2:11Speaker 4: You did right.
- 2:11Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 2:12Speaker 4: You did right by it. Thank you.
- 2:14Speaker 1: It's excellent.
- 2:14Speaker 4: You're excellent.
- 2:19Speaker 3: There are these themes of community and community amongst girls.
- 2:23Speaker 4: I mean, friendship, love.
- 2:26Speaker 3: There's definitely a rebellious streak.
- 2:31Speaker 4: What did you relate with most? Were you a rebellious teenager?
- 2:34Speaker 1: I don't know about rebellious, but I had my moments
- 2:38Speaker 1: of rebellion where I would, if an adult told me
- 2:41Speaker 1: to do something, of course you're like, well, I'm not
- 2:42Speaker 1: gonna do it because they told me to do it.
- 2:44Speaker 4: Yeah, Margaret Atwood told me, I can say shut up
- 2:46Speaker 4: to you.
- 2:48Speaker 1: But of course there's so many themes in the book
- 2:50Speaker 1: that I think a lot of people can relate to.
- 2:52Speaker 1: And same with the TV show. And I think that
- 2:55Speaker 1: the great thing about our show, especially for the episodes
- 2:58Speaker 1: that we have right now, and I hope it can,
- 3:00Speaker 1: I'm excited for it to continue forward.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Yeah, that's great.
- 3:03Speaker 1: But I think that there's so many themes that are
- 3:04Speaker 1: part of it that are so universal. The friendship element
- 3:06Speaker 1: is something that I'm really connected to. My friends are
- 3:09Speaker 1: some of the most important people in my life. And
- 3:13Speaker 1: I think that also just the sense of community is
- 3:16Speaker 1: something that I feel very strongly about. And I think
- 3:18Speaker 1: that It's shown so beautifully in the show, especially with
- 3:22Speaker 1: these young girls who really only have each other when
- 3:25Speaker 1: they're told that they're not supposed to.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Have that connection.
- 3:28Speaker 3: You know, community is this word that is thrown around
- 3:31Speaker 3: a lot. And I join a gym, and they text me, hey,
- 3:35Speaker 3: welcome to the community.
- 3:36Speaker 4: And I'm like.
- 3:37Speaker 3: I don't think this is the community that really is
- 3:40Speaker 3: going to save our society, but it is clear in
- 3:43Speaker 3: the Testaments that community is a powerful word and is
- 3:47Speaker 3: an important aspect that we have to have. And I'm
- 3:51Speaker 3: sure you were hoping people would take that away from
- 3:53Speaker 3: the Testaments.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Oh, completely, completely.
- 3:55Speaker 1: I think that, again, one of the beautiful things about
- 3:57Speaker 1: the show is it emphasizes how important community is, not
- 4:01Speaker 1: only within our own lives, but to enact change in
- 4:04Speaker 1: the world. And I think that one of the beautiful
- 4:06Speaker 1: things that you see with these girls is even though
- 4:08Speaker 1: they don't have that much power in Gilead, the amount
- 4:11Speaker 1: that they can do with that power that they have
- 4:14Speaker 1: because they've built a strong community, it does far more
- 4:18Speaker 1: than anybody could have imagined. And I think that just
- 4:20Speaker 1: having the show to remind people of that and remind
- 4:23Speaker 1: people of connection, that I feel very fortunate to be
- 4:25Speaker 1: a part of.
- 4:25Speaker 4: That's great. You are Midwest by nature. Love that so much.
- 4:30Speaker 2: Thank you, thank you.
- 4:31Speaker 4: I'm a Michigander myself.
- 4:32Speaker 2: I'm a Hoosier and a Chicagoan.
- 4:35Speaker 4: Yeah, Indianapolis and Chicago.
- 4:38Speaker 3: But you've had this colossal trajectory so quickly, it feels like.
- 4:44Speaker 3: I'm sure from your perspective, you know all the steps.
- 4:48Speaker 3: Is it important for you to remain Midwest? What does
- 4:51Speaker 3: it mean to be Midwest? I mean, I'm sure you're
- 4:54Speaker 3: in New York and LA a lot, but what's your
- 4:56Speaker 3: perspective on where you're from now, where you are in
- 4:59Speaker 3: show business?
- 5:00Speaker 2: Well, I think it's, I love being able to go
- 5:03Speaker 2: back home.
- 5:03Speaker 1: And I think that there's key things about the Midwest
- 5:07Speaker 1: that just, I don't know if I could ever leave just, again,
- 5:09Speaker 1: that sense of community. The Midwest nice is something that
- 5:13Speaker 1: I really do love. And also, like, that's where my
- 5:16Speaker 1: family is, that's where my home is. I love that city,
- 5:19Speaker 1: and I have no intention of leaving.
- 5:22Speaker 2: I mean, me right now.
- 5:23Speaker 4: Chicago, you're talking about Chicago. Chicago, Chicago, Chicago. Tell me
- 5:25Speaker 4: what you love about Chicago.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Well, I mean, the food is amazing. But also like.
- 5:30Speaker 4: I noticed you had a deep dish pizza in your purse.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Yeah, of course.
- 5:33Speaker 1: I always carry it with me. But I think the
- 5:38Speaker 1: food is incredible. The architecture is beautiful.
- 5:40Speaker 4: For sure, yeah.
- 5:41Speaker 2: And also just, I love that it's like a... It
- 5:44Speaker 2: feels like a small, big city.
- 5:45Speaker 1: Because, I guess maybe because I've been there for so long,
- 5:49Speaker 1: I'm very accustomed to the transit lines and getting around.
- 5:52Speaker 2: But also just... I don't know, it feels cozy.
- 5:55Speaker 1: But if I ever am craving the big city feel,
- 5:58Speaker 1: I can just go downtown and kind of get my
- 6:01Speaker 1: fill of that.
- 6:02Speaker 3: I always said that when I moved to LA, I
- 6:06Speaker 3: couldn't believe people would just lie.
- 6:07Speaker 4: To my face. Be like, hey, we should get lunch sometime.
- 6:10Speaker 3: And then I would follow up five times, and I'd
- 6:12Speaker 3: be like, I think maybe they didn't want to get lunch.
- 6:16Speaker 4: But in the Midwest, if someone says they're going to
- 6:17Speaker 4: get lunch, you're going to get lunch.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Exactly. And if anything, it's probably like in two days.
- 6:21Speaker 4: Yeah, we're going to do lunch. Let's do it right now. Yes.
- 6:24Speaker 4: What type of roles do you look forward to playing
- 6:26Speaker 4: in the future?
- 6:27Speaker 3: I mean, these last two that I've seen you in
- 6:30Speaker 3: from One Battle After Another and The Testaments, I mean,
- 6:33Speaker 3: a rebellious, strong woman fighting the man.
- 6:38Speaker 4: Is this what we're going to see from you in
- 6:39Speaker 4: the future? Or is it all... up for grabs?
- 6:43Speaker 2: I mean, I hope to.
- 6:44Speaker 1: Continue to play parts that kind of challenge both me
- 6:49Speaker 1: and also the way that people can view me in
- 6:52Speaker 1: a way.
- 6:52Speaker 4: Sure.
- 6:53Speaker 1: But I also am excited to see what the future
- 6:55Speaker 1: holds and the variety of things I can do, because
- 6:58Speaker 1: I want to kind of branch out Of course.
- 7:01Speaker 2: And do a bunch of different things. I don't know.
- 7:02Speaker 2: I love acting.
- 7:04Speaker 4: You were a musical... Were you involved in musical theater?
- 7:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I went to school for musical theater.
- 7:08Speaker 4: Okay, so you sing.
- 7:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:09Speaker 4: Oh, my gosh. I'm not going to say sing now. Stop.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Thank God. I'm not warmed up. I'm not warmed up.
- 7:15Speaker 4: But Broadway is maybe... I mean, here we are in
- 7:17Speaker 4: New York City. Broadway is something that could potentially be
- 7:19Speaker 4: in your mind?
- 7:20Speaker 2: I hope so. I mean, it's been a dream of mine. Yeah,
- 7:22Speaker 2: that's cool.
- 7:23Speaker 1: That's cool. It's been a dream of mine since I was.
- 7:27Speaker 4: Like, 10.
- 7:27Speaker 2: So.
- 7:28Speaker 3: It's been a dream of hers since 10, so she's
- 7:31Speaker 3: gonna have to beat me out, beat me first.
- 7:33Speaker 4: Because, whatever. You've worked with Leonardo DiCaprio.
- 7:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:39Speaker 4: You've worked with Sean Penn.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 7:41Speaker 4: Now you've worked with Michael Kosta.
- 7:43Speaker 2: I mean, what is it like It's such an honor.
- 7:46Speaker 4: What is it like being around such icons?
- 7:48Speaker 2: Well, I mean, I'm kind of very anxious right now.
- 7:50Speaker 1: You make me very anxious because I'm so excited to
- 7:52Speaker 1: be here, of course.
- 7:54Speaker 4: You have to say that.
- 7:54Speaker 3: But what is it like sharing a screen with people
- 7:59Speaker 3: that you grew up watching, I'm sure?
- 8:01Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, it's incredible because I can learn so
- 8:05Speaker 1: much from them. And I did learn so much from them.
- 8:07Speaker 1: And I feel very grateful, too, because I can call
- 8:09Speaker 1: on them for anything. But just watching their, not only
- 8:13Speaker 1: their professionalism, but like their passion. And just how incredibly
- 8:21Speaker 1: gentle they are with their leadership. And I think that
- 8:23Speaker 1: that is something that I also admire deeply and their kindness.
- 8:26Speaker 2: And I just learned so much from them.
- 8:28Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, in the Testaments, I think I read
- 8:30Speaker 3: that you were number one on the call sheet, which
- 8:31Speaker 3: makes sense. But that comes with a little bit of
- 8:34Speaker 3: sense of responsibility. Was that something you took seriously?
- 8:37Speaker 2: Oh, completely.
- 8:37Speaker 1: And I think that I also felt an extra level
- 8:40Speaker 1: of responsibility considering that there were a bunch of younger
- 8:44Speaker 1: girls that were on the show. I mean, it was
- 8:46Speaker 1: the greatest gift of all to be working on a
- 8:49Speaker 1: show with girls who are similar to my age. But
- 8:50Speaker 1: I also wanted to be a voice of advocacy for
- 8:53Speaker 1: them because I know that I'm in a very privileged position,
- 8:57Speaker 1: both in terms of the show, but also in terms
- 9:00Speaker 1: of my experience and I wanted to make sure that
- 9:03Speaker 1: I could, I guess, be of example to them, but
- 9:06Speaker 1: also if they ever needed anything, I tried to make
- 9:08Speaker 1: sure that they knew that I was always there for them.
- 9:11Speaker 1: And just to be a listening ear, if they even
- 9:14Speaker 1: just needed a pick me up or anything, I could
- 9:16Speaker 1: be there for them.
- 9:17Speaker 4: I've never been number one on a call sheet.
- 9:19Speaker 3: I've been number 14, but equally, I take that very
- 9:24Speaker 3: seriously and with a lot of responsibility. And I always
- 9:26Speaker 3: tell people that are between the numbers of 14 and 99,
- 9:28Speaker 3: you can come talk to me anytime you want. I
- 9:31Speaker 3: love asking artists, actors, creators, what inspires them, what motivates them,
- 9:37Speaker 3: what comes to mind when I first ask that from you,
- 9:40Speaker 3: or something that we can all take from what gives
- 9:42Speaker 3: you your energy and your inspiration.
- 9:45Speaker 2: Oh, my community.
- 9:46Speaker 1: I think that my friends and my family are the
- 9:48Speaker 1: people that give me the most energy, the most inspiration.
- 9:51Speaker 1: I always say that my best friend is my biggest
- 9:53Speaker 1: inspiration because if she doesn't, I'm like, well, she's doing it.
- 9:55Speaker 2: I kind of want to try it.
- 9:56Speaker 1: But my community are the people that inspire me the most.
- 10:00Speaker 1: And I think that they pour so much into me,
- 10:04Speaker 1: and I try to pour back into them, and I
- 10:08Speaker 1: love them. They're my people in life, and so I'm
- 10:11Speaker 1: grateful to have them.
- 10:12Speaker 4: That's great. Thank you very, very much for coming here today.
- 10:14Speaker 3: All episodes of The Testament are streaming on Hulu and
- 10:18Speaker 3: Hulu on Disney +.
