Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Devin Gray, are you can your correspondent with us is
- 0:03Speaker 1: with us this morning? Another success for the far right
- 0:06Speaker 1: in Germany? How are we looking in that state election?
- 0:09Speaker 2: Real sighth of relief for the German leader, the Chancellor,
- 0:11Speaker 2: all Our Scholtz, because according to exit polls they came
- 0:15Speaker 2: out just in the last forty five minutes or so,
- 0:17Speaker 2: it looks like the Chancellor's party has held off a
- 0:21Speaker 2: very very strong campaign by the Alternative for Germany, the
- 0:25Speaker 2: far right party, the AfD. It looks like the Chancellor's
- 0:30Speaker 2: Social Democrats have scored thirty one percent and the Alternative
- 0:34Speaker 2: for Germany thirty percent. I have to say this would
- 0:37Speaker 2: have been a loss in the Chancellor all of Schultz's
- 0:40Speaker 2: own backyard just outside Berlin, and if it lost this
- 0:43Speaker 2: election then I think that possibly would have really dented
- 0:47Speaker 2: his future, possibly beyond any attempt to get it back,
- 0:51Speaker 2: and could have seen him have to step down. So
- 0:54Speaker 2: a lot of people waiting. I know these are only
- 0:57Speaker 2: exit polls, but they tend to be pretty accurate in German,
- 1:00Speaker 2: and it looks like the march of the AfD, which
- 1:03Speaker 2: has done so well with recent election successes, has been
- 1:06Speaker 2: held off by this result, which we're expecting to be
- 1:10Speaker 2: formalized in the next few hours.
- 1:12Speaker 1: To the UK and Sakis Starmer. We were covering this
- 1:15Speaker 1: last week, all the freebies from the donors, you know,
- 1:18Speaker 1: the sixty six thousand pounds over the last year for
- 1:21Speaker 1: accommodation and clothes and even those pricey glasses. He's trying
- 1:25Speaker 1: to put a line under this.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Yeah, he has been. And today is the opening of
- 1:30Speaker 2: the Labor Party conference, so the Party of Government Secure.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Starmer's party had an annual gathering where they decide what
- 1:37Speaker 2: the policies they're going to try and do and talk
- 1:39Speaker 2: through over the next year or so. And you know,
- 1:42Speaker 2: in this honeymoon period, normally it's a big triumphant thing.
- 1:46Speaker 2: But I'm afraid the news this week has been really
- 1:48Speaker 2: bad for the Prime Minister. We drip drip drip about
- 1:51Speaker 2: gossip and scandal within Downing Street. And he's only been,
- 1:54Speaker 2: of course, in powers is early July, so we're now
- 1:59Speaker 2: getting a sense of perhaps where things are going. They
- 2:01Speaker 2: are definitely trying to draw a line under all the freebies.
- 2:05Speaker 2: But now the Deputy Prime Minister has been accused of
- 2:09Speaker 2: acting improperly by accepting a stay in a New York
- 2:13Speaker 2: compartment owned by a donor to her political party. The
- 2:17Speaker 2: Deputy Prime Minister says she's done nothing wrong, broken no
- 2:20Speaker 2: parliamentary rules. But again it is this drip drip of
- 2:25Speaker 2: information coming through and indeed outlandish claims really of hypocrisy
- 2:29Speaker 2: because the Labor Party have been accusing other parties of
- 2:33Speaker 2: accepting freebies and perhaps allowing it to sway their policy
- 2:37Speaker 2: decisions over the past few years, when now, of course
- 2:40Speaker 2: they are able to have a go back at Labor
- 2:42Speaker 2: and say you are no different. So the Prime Minister
- 2:45Speaker 2: now saying he won't accept any free clothes from anyone,
- 2:50Speaker 2: but all those free tickets to Taylor Swift Conference, the
- 2:54Speaker 2: Arsenal football Club, they I think will continue.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Goodness everyone likes and it doesn't matter what party from.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Everybody likes a nice coat, don't they. Gavin and Gray
- 3:03Speaker 1: are UK correspondent with us. Thank you very much for
