Ep. 100. Bucky Barnes: MCU Vs. Comics · Vigilante Vibes Podcast

0:29
Hi guys, it's Megan with vigilante vibes and I have my
0:33
final character breakdown for all the characters of
0:36
Thunderbolts. If you're interested in anyone
0:38
like Red Guardian, Taskmaster, Ghost, just look at my channel
0:41
and you will see all of them. But today, the last but not
0:45
least, we are focusing on Bucky Barnes.
0:50
Thunderbolts is coming out today.
0:53
I'm going to see it tomorrow night.
0:54
So I guess when this is posted, I'll be seeing it today.
0:58
I'm seeing it Friday. So what better time is there to
1:04
talk about Bucky Barnes? I will give you the MCU version
1:07
and his comic counterpart. I'll go through all the big
1:10
notable events in his life that helped shaped him into the
1:12
character he is today, and I'll give you the recommendations on
1:15
which comics to check out to get to know him a lot better.
1:19
So buckle up, it will be a lot. James Buchanan Bucky Barnes was
1:25
a soldier in World War 2 and best friends with Steve Rogers
1:28
since they were kids. After the attack on Pearl
1:31
Harbor, Bucky joined the Army and ended up in the 107th
1:34
Infantry. In 1943 his unit got captured by
1:38
HYDRA and during that time Arnhem Zola injected him with
1:43
the Super Soldier serum. Steve, now Captain America,
1:46
rescued him and the two teamed up to form the Howling Commandos
1:50
to fight the Red Skull. Unfortunately, during the
1:54
mission in the Alps, Bucky fell from a train and was presumed
1:58
dead, though nobody, no body was ever found.
2:03
Until, I mean, not by the good guys, I guess.
2:07
Turns out Bucky did survive the fall thanks to the serum, but
2:11
lost his left arm. The Soviets in Hydra found him,
2:14
brainwashed him, gave him a metal arm, and turned him into
2:16
an assassin called The Winter Soldier.
2:19
For decades, he was used to take out threats to Hydra, including
2:22
people like JFK and Howard Stark.
2:24
Between missions, they'd put him in a cryofreeze to keep him
2:27
around longer. In 2014, he was sent to kill
2:31
Nick Fury but ended up running into Steve, which started to
2:35
bring back his memories. After the Triscalian battle,
2:39
Bucky broke away from Hydra and started trying to piece his life
2:42
back together. A couple years later, he got
2:45
framed for a bombing in Vienna that killed King T'chaca, the
2:50
father of King T'challa the Black Panther, which kicked off
2:53
a wholeness Black Panther was after him and it triggered the
2:57
Avenger Civil War. Eventually, it came out that
3:01
Helmut Zemo was behind it all and had reactivated Bucky's
3:05
brainwashing. Zemo also revealed that Bucky
3:09
had killed Tony Stark's parents, leading to a brutal showdown
3:12
with Iron Man Bucky survived and ended up in Wakanda, where
3:16
T'challa gave him sanctuary while they worked to fully
3:19
deprogram him. With the help from Cherie, Bucky
3:24
was finally freed from Hydra's control and started going by
3:26
White Wolf. Which I'm kind of bummed that we
3:30
didn't get to see more of that. He fought in the battle for
3:34
Wakanda against Thanos, but was snapped out of existence when
3:37
Thanos wiped out half the universe.
3:40
Five years later, Hulk brought him back and he fought the epic
3:44
final battle that we saw in Avengers End Game.
3:47
He also attended Tony's funeral and said goodbye to Steve, who
3:51
went back in time and came back old, passing the shield on to
3:55
Sam Wilson, trying to make amends for his past.
3:58
Bucky was thrown back into action when John Walker became
4:01
the new Captain America and the Flag Smasher showed up to
4:05
challenge how the world was dealing with the Blip.
4:08
Bucky and Sam teamed up, sometimes reluctantly, with Zemo
4:13
and Sharon Carter to stop them. Things got messy when Walker
4:17
went too far. He unalives someone.
4:19
It was a nationalist and like everyone saw it, but in the end
4:24
Bucky and Sam took him down and wrapped up the mission.
4:28
Not long after that, Nebula randomly attacked Bucky and
4:31
stole his arm and gave it to Rocket as a Christmas gift.
4:34
If we all remember, by 2027, Bucky had taken a whole new
4:39
turn. He got into politics and started
4:41
a campaign to run for Congress. We saw a cameo of him in Captain
4:47
America Brave New World. If that spoiled that for you, I
4:51
am so sorry I didn't think that through.
4:56
But I mean, like, there's no way it hasn't been spoiled for you
4:59
yet. But what we've seen in the clips
5:02
that came out of, I'm blinking so hard today, what we saw from
5:08
the clips that came out of Thunderbolts already is that his
5:11
political career did not last. It was less than half a term,
5:16
according to Val. So I'm very curious to see where
5:19
his head at is in Thunderbolts and see what happened with his
5:23
political career. Because I'm not going to lie to
5:25
you, I really, really, really wanted a vote for Bucky T-shirt.
5:30
So kind of mad they went straight past that whole merch
5:35
opportunity there. So that is the MCU version.
5:38
I'm sure everyone is very familiar with it.
5:40
If you're not, if not, I hope. I hope you've learned something
5:44
from it. So let's get into his comic
5:46
counterpart. This is the very, very rich
5:48
background of Bucky. There's so much to work with.
5:52
He's just been around for so long and he's done so much.
5:56
So let me tell you all about him.
6:00
Originally introduced as a sidekick to Captain America, the
6:04
character was created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby and 1st
6:07
appeared in Captain America comics #1 cover dated March
6:11
1941, which was published by Marvel's predecessor Timely
6:16
Comics. That's how long he has been
6:19
around. He is.
6:23
God bless him. James Bucky Barnes started out
6:25
as an American soldier during World War 2 after growing up as
6:28
a ward of the state. He fought alongside his best
6:31
friend Steve Rogers AKA Captain America and was part of a team
6:35
called the Invaders that helped the Allies win the war.
6:38
You can see this in Captain America comics #1 Like I said,
6:42
everyone thought Bucky died near the end of it, but he actually
6:46
was found by the Soviets, brainwashed by a guy named Visly
6:50
Karpov and turned into The Winter Soldier, A deadly
6:54
assassin used for the secret missions over the next 50 years.
6:58
This can be seen in Captain America Volume 5 #50.
7:02
Eventually Bucky's memories came back and after Steve Rogers was
7:05
presumed dead, Bucky stepped in and became the new Captain
7:08
America for a while even he even joined The Avengers.
7:13
You can see that in Captain America Volume 5 #34 when Steve
7:18
returned, Bucky gave up the shield, went back to being The
7:21
Winter Soldier, which we see in Winter Soldier number One.
7:25
That's a very quick breakdown of his character, but I'd like to
7:29
take it back a lot further. Bucky Barnes was born in 1925
7:34
and lost both of his parents at a young age.
7:36
His mom passed away when he was little and his dad died during
7:39
basic training. He and his sister Rebecca were
7:42
separated, with her sent to a boarding school while Bucky
7:46
convinced officials to let him stay at Camp Lehigh, where he
7:50
eventually became the camp mascot.
7:53
By 1940, during World War 2, Bucky was running a little side
7:57
hustle getting supplies for soldiers.
8:00
He later went back to England and trained with British
8:02
commandos, picking up hand to hand combat skills and taking on
8:06
special OPS missions. After his combat training, Bucky
8:11
met Steve Rogers, now Captain America, and was assigned to
8:15
work with him, though he didn't know at first what Cap was
8:19
really up to. He didn't know he was Captain
8:22
America. He didn't know his secret
8:24
identity. That changed when Bucky
8:26
accidentally saw Steve in costume and was sworn to
8:29
secrecy. From there, he joined Cap on his
8:32
first mission against the Red Skull and later trained under
8:35
him to become his own mass sidekick.
8:37
Bucky meant to counteract the influence of the Hitler Youth.
8:43
Though a bit skeptical of Steve's idealism at first, the
8:47
two became inseparable after the US entered World War 2.
8:51
After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Captain America and
8:55
Bucky dropped their military roles to fight full time as
8:58
costumed heroes. They teamed up with a
9:01
submariner, the original Human Torch, and his sidekick Toro,
9:05
forming a group Winston Churchill called the Invaders.
9:09
Bucky was a key member, but briefly stepped away in 1942 to
9:13
lead a group of teen soldiers called the Kid Commandos.
9:17
He also pulled together a team of superpowered heroes called
9:20
the Liberty Legion to fight threats at home and work with
9:24
another teen group, the Young Allies.
9:27
So he's just jumping from group to group.
9:30
He is a busy, busy guy. In late 1945, near the end of
9:35
the war, Cap and Bucky were in London chasing down Nazi
9:39
scientist Baron Zemo, who was trying to steal an experimental
9:43
drone plane. During a fight with Zemo's
9:45
robot, both of them were knocked out and strapped to the plane,
9:49
which Zemo planned to send to Hitler.
9:52
He even changed their costumes to army uniforms just out of
9:56
spite. They woke up just in time to
9:59
escape, grabbed a motorcycle, and chased after the plane.
10:02
As it started taking off, they jumped for it.
10:05
Bucky made it, but Cat missed and warned him to let go in case
10:08
it was rigged. Bucky couldn't.
10:10
His sleeve got caught, the plane exploded, and Bucky was presumed
10:14
dead. Cat fell into the ocean and
10:16
ended up frozen, but Bucky's body was never found, which only
10:21
adds to the mystery around his fate.
10:24
Turns out Bucky survived the explosion, but, you know, just
10:28
barely. He lost his left arm in the
10:30
blast and ended up in icy waters going through a similar freezing
10:34
process as Cap. After the war, a Russian sub
10:38
searching for Captain America stumbled upon Bucky's body
10:41
instead. They found he didn't have the
10:43
Super soldier serum, but still put him in cryo.
10:48
The Sovits turned him into the white soldier, sending him
10:51
around the world for high level assassinations.
10:54
In 1946 he was even ordered to kill Itsu, the pregnant wife of
10:59
Logan AKA Wolverine. In 1954 they revived him and
11:05
gave him a cybernetic arm, upgrading it over the years as
11:08
tech improved. He didn't remember who he was,
11:11
but he was deadly skilled and completely brainwashed, molded
11:16
into the perfect weapon. During this time, Bucky also
11:20
trained Natasha Romanoff, Black Widow, in the Red Room.
11:25
The two fell in love even though she was promised to someone
11:29
else. But after Bucky started showing
11:31
signs of instability during a mission, the Soviets began
11:34
freezing him between assignments to keep him under control.
11:40
In 1963, Bucky, now fully brainwashed as The Winter
11:44
Soldier, was used as the second gunman in the assassination of
11:48
JFKA. Few years later, in 1966, he was
11:52
sent to track down to Nazi scientists who created something
11:55
called the Alchemy Formula. During a mission against a Hydra
12:00
agent named Drain, Bucky briefly started to remember who he was.
12:05
He tried to help one of the scientists, Mila Hitzig Hitzig
12:11
escape with the help of SHIELD agent Ran Shen, but things went
12:16
sideways and Nick Fury accidentally killed her.
12:18
After that the Russians re brainwashed him to prevent more
12:21
slip UPS. In 1973, Bucky went off the
12:26
radar after a mission. He was eventually found in a
12:29
rundown New York hotel, oddly enough in the same building
12:33
where Namor was staying. Both of them had amnesia and did
12:36
not recognize each other. By 1983, Bucky was assigned as a
12:42
bodyguard to an aging General Karpov, who had been involved
12:46
with his original conditioning. He stayed with him until the
12:50
general died in 1988, but Bucky started showing signs of mental
12:55
instability again and he was put back in the Cryo storage, now
12:59
under the control of Karpov's successor, General Lukan.
13:04
After the Soviet Union collapsed, Lukan went rogue and
13:07
started Cronus Oil. Fast forward to 2000s, Bucky was
13:12
sent to a country called Sin Kong to investigate a strange
13:17
energy source known as the Dragon Breath.
13:19
While there, they ended up saving Reed Richards and Ben
13:22
Grimm. General Lukan brought Bucky,
13:25
still The Winter Soldier, back into action to assassinate the
13:28
Red Skull and steal his new Cosmic Cube.
13:32
What no one realized, though, was that the Red Skull had
13:35
already transformed his mind into Lukan's body.
13:39
After taking out Nomad and framing him for the Skull's
13:42
death, Bucky set off a deadly explosion in Philadelphia, which
13:47
ended up powering the Cube. Lukan, disturbed by what the
13:52
Cube was doing, had Bucky stash it in a secure vault in West
13:56
Virginia. While investigating, Nick Fury
13:59
and SHIELD started putting the pieces together, and Cap
14:02
eventually confronted Bucky at the vault.
14:05
They fought until Cap grabbed the cube and used it to restore
14:09
Bucky's memories. Overwhelmed by guilt, Bucky
14:12
destroyed the cube and disappeared, going underground
14:15
to track down Lukan, unaware that Lukan and the Red Skull
14:18
were now sharing the same body. Later, after a run in with
14:24
Wolverine and Serbia, Bucky found Lucan in England.
14:27
Right as the Red Skull activated a giant sleeper robot, Bucky set
14:32
aside his mission for revenge and teamed up with Cap to stop
14:35
it. It was the first time they
14:37
fought side by side in over 50 years, but Bucky vanished again
14:42
afterward, still not ready to face Steve.
14:45
Which is so sad because it's not like he was in control.
14:48
But I can understand he feels overwhelmed and that everything
14:52
came back at once. I get it.
14:55
It was then revealed Bucky had been working undercover for Nick
14:58
Fury, who had gone off the grid after leaving SHIELD, which Nick
15:01
Fury tends to do. During one mission, Bucky met
15:05
some of the Young Avengers and realized just how much he and
15:08
Cap had inspired a new generation.
15:10
He also reconnected with Neymour, helping Wolverine
15:15
subdue his son Dakin, and even gave some heartfelt advice to a
15:20
jaded Patriot. After Captain America was
15:24
assassinated, Bucky was out for revenge.
15:28
He blamed the Red Skull and Tony Stark, who was running SHIELD at
15:31
the time. Bucky ended up getting Cap
15:33
SHIELD and taking it from Black Widow, his ex and former
15:37
trainee, when she tried to move it.
15:41
Bucky eventually tracked down Lukan, only to realize it was
15:45
actually the Red Skull in control.
15:47
Bucky got captured, nearly brainwashed by Doctor Faustus,
15:52
but held out long enough to be rescued by Falcon and Sharon
15:57
Carter, who is pretending to be under Faustus's control.
16:02
Back in SHIELD custody, Bucky escaped and confronted Tony
16:05
Stark. He managed to disable Iron Man's
16:08
suit and hold his own in the fight.
16:10
That's when he found out Steve had left Stark.
16:13
Two final wishes to help Bucky find peace and to make sure
16:18
someone worthy took up the Captain America mantle.
16:21
Stark believed Bucky should be the one to do it.
16:24
Bucky agreed on the condition that any leftover brainwashing
16:28
was wiped from his mind and that he wouldn't be answering to
16:31
anyone, not even Stark or SHIELD.
16:35
After moving into Captain America's old safe house, Bucky
16:38
got a new Captain America suit made by Tony Stark and started
16:42
fighting back against the Red Skulls efforts to stir up chaos
16:46
with Cap, shield and other weapons.
16:48
He was effective in battle, but he still hadn't earned the
16:51
respect of the US government or the public.
16:54
A lot of civilians, even some heroes like Clint Barton, didn't
16:57
like his new look. Despite the criticism, Bucky
17:02
kept at it, fighting terrorism as Captain America with Falcon,
17:06
who initially wasn't on board with him.
17:08
Together they took on an AIM cell led by Arnhem Zola.
17:13
The Red Skull wasn't backing down though.
17:15
He sent the Grand Director, who had been brainwashed to think he
17:19
was Steve Rogers, to take down Bucky.
17:21
Bucky barely made it out alive and had to retreat with Falcon.
17:25
They kept an eye on the Grand Director as he became more
17:28
unhinged and tried to stay under the radar of AIM and the Red
17:32
Skull. Eventually, Bucky earned the
17:35
government and public's approval when he stopped an assassination
17:38
plot by Sin, the Red Skull's daughter, who was targeting both
17:42
Republican and Democratic candidates.
17:45
Around this time, he reconnected with Black Widow, one of the few
17:48
people who had always had his back.
17:53
His next big challenge came when the scrolls invaded and Bucky
17:56
fought alongside other heroes in New York.
17:59
Wanting to honor Steve's legacy, Bucky invited Clint Barton and
18:02
the New Avengers to use his safe house as their base and pledged
18:05
his support to their cause. In the big battle involving The
18:09
Avengers, New Avengers, and the Invaders, Bucky used the Cosmic
18:13
Cube to bring his old friend Toro back to life.
18:17
Even though Bucky had turned his life around, there were still
18:20
some officials from the US and other countries that couldn't
18:23
forget his Winter Soldier past. He had to face one of his old
18:27
crimes when he tried to kill Chinese scientist Zhang Qin in
18:32
1968. This was after the invaders had
18:36
already saved him from Imperial Japan in 1942.
18:41
Zhang wanted to use the original Human Torch's biological
18:44
material to create a virus, but Bucky and Nimur stopped him and
18:49
his project. The Human Torch was given a
18:52
proper burial. Later, Bucky learned from Sharon
18:55
that Captain America wasn't actually dead.
18:58
He was stuck in a time loop reliving his past.
19:01
Sharon had sabotaged the machine meant to bring back Steve.
19:06
Bucky and Black Widow tried to steal the device from Hammer,
19:10
but they were caught. Norman Osborne sent Widow back
19:13
with an ultimatum. Either Sharon would turn herself
19:16
in for allegedly shooting Steve, or he'd kill Bucky.
19:20
Bucky was handed over to the Thunderbolt, who said he could
19:23
join them once Steve was back, but Ant Man secretly freed him
19:27
and Falcon eventually rescued him.
19:31
After some time thinking things over, Bucky decided to step down
19:34
as Captain America so Steve could return.
19:37
Before that, though, Bucky and Black Widow threw the shield one
19:41
last time. That night.
19:43
Steve was also suited up and ready to fight, but when he saw
19:46
Natasha and Bucky leaving, he realized that Bucky was more
19:50
than ready to take on the Captain America role.
19:53
The two had a quick battle with Mr. Hyde and his hench men, and
19:57
once the fight was over, Steve officially handed the shield to
20:00
Bucky, giving him his full blessing.
20:02
When Osborne attacked Asgard, the heroes teamed up to stop his
20:06
grab for absolute power. For the first time, both Bucky
20:10
and Steve Rogers fought together as Captain America's helping
20:15
defeat Osborne's forces. After the battle, the Superhuman
20:20
Registration Act was scrapped and Steve made Bucky a member of
20:24
the New Avengers. Their first mission sent them to
20:27
the future, where they fought Ultron.
20:31
Later, Bucky went up against the Grand Director, who had taken
20:35
over the Watchdogs after he became disgusted with how
20:38
America was changing. Bucky infiltrated their group,
20:41
but once he was recognized, they kidnapped him to use him.
20:45
In a video that would show the explosion of the Hoover Dam,
20:49
Falcon dropped a train loaded with explosives before helping
20:53
Bucky take down the Grand Director, though the Director's
20:56
body was never found after he fell into the river.
21:01
Baron Helmut Zemo tried to discredit Bucky by accusing him
21:05
of being unworthy of Captain America SHIELD, using his past
21:09
as The Winter Soldier to turn the public against him.
21:12
Bucky did his best to protect his friends from the new Red
21:15
Skull, but he was still condemned even though his
21:19
sentence was already served. A Russian ambassador demanded
21:23
Bucky's extradition to Russia, where he was accused of killing
21:27
two Russian citizens and a Russian gulag.
21:31
Bucky had to fight against villains who wanted him dead,
21:34
but he got some help from a few of them, like Nico Constantine
21:39
who had been part of the Wolf's fighter project.
21:42
When Colonel Rostov recovered the Ziefer codes, Bucky realized
21:46
that it was a trap and escaped. During the his third public
21:49
fight, he was rescued by Black Widow, who knew the Russians
21:53
plans. The two citizens Bucky had
21:55
supposedly killed in 1982 were actually KGB agents of Rostov.
22:01
When Scotty attacked Washington DC, Bucky was there to stop her
22:08
and her power was too much and he got beaten nearly to death.
22:12
Before passing out, he told Black Widow to warn people about
22:15
the serpent. He was rushed to Nick Fury, who
22:19
gave him the Infinity Formula, saving his life and healing him.
22:23
Bucky decided to go underground again and took up his Winter
22:27
Soldier persona. His life model decoy was buried
22:31
at the Arlington National Cemetery.
22:34
Now he is back to being Winter Soldier again.
22:39
Believed dead and looking for redemption.
22:41
James went off the grid with Black Widow protecting the Cold
22:45
War sleeper agents. He took down two of the three
22:49
super soldiers Madame Von Bardis used to try and kill Doctor
22:52
Doom. The third, Leo Novakov, had
22:56
woken up from hibernation years earlier.
22:59
Leo saw Bucky as a traitor, so he sent him a message by killing
23:04
another Bucky and kidnapping Black Widow to get to him.
23:08
Bucky, wanting to save her, took the mission Leo set up and
23:11
fought Daredevil. He eventually defeated Leo, but
23:15
Leo got his revenge. Natasha got back all her
23:17
memories except the ones about Bucky.
23:21
Later, Bucky faced Tesla Terasova, the daughter of a man
23:26
he killed in 1983. Tesla had taken down Father
23:30
Hammer, the leader of an island where the orphans were raised as
23:33
weapons, and was trying to change her past using the cosmic
23:37
rays her father invented. After a battle at a space base,
23:40
SHIELD attacked and Bucky and Tesla escaped.
23:44
Eventually, Bucky reappeared as part of the reformed all New
23:47
invader, fighting against the Kritenolf and rescuing Toro, now
23:53
an Inhuman from Kurt Dagmer. This gave Bucky the chance to
23:59
investigate Martian attacks and their connection to kill Raven.
24:04
In the meantime, Bucky was keeping tabs on Natasha and
24:08
acting as her personal guardian Angel.
24:09
On multiple occasions. Bucky was one of the heroes Nick
24:13
Fury secretly gathered to supposedly investigate Owatu the
24:18
Watcher's death, but it turned out they were actually being set
24:21
up to track Nick Fury's secret activities as the Man on the
24:26
Wall, the first line of defense against the Space Invaders, with
24:29
the goal of replacing him. When Bucky figured out he'd been
24:34
played, he attacked the LMD Life model decoy of Nick Fury at
24:39
Avengers Tower and used it to find the real Fury's location.
24:44
The other heroes also made their way to the same spot, a hidden
24:47
satellite. There the older Fury confronted
24:51
them and explained his plans. When Fury got an alert that the
24:54
LM DS body had self destructed, someone had tried to investigate
24:58
it. He took one of the watchers eyes
25:01
from Bucky and locked himself in a secure room, trying to
25:04
activate the second eyes he'd been hiding.
25:08
When The Avengers arrived with Iron Man tracking the LMD
25:11
signal, Fury confronted them. Now suited up and holding both
25:16
Watchers eyes. Saying his eyes had been opened,
25:22
Fury fought off the heroes and made it back to the Watchers
25:25
Citadel where Doctor Midas was trying to take even more power.
25:31
Fury fought Midas's mindless ones, but one of the Watchers
25:35
eyes had taken by the orb and Fury almost lost the battle.
25:39
However, Bucky and the other heroes Fury had chosen arrived
25:43
just in time, as they tend to do, and they got Fury to admit
25:48
that he was the one who killed Owatu.
25:50
After Fury supposedly died in an explosion that took out Midas,
25:54
Bucky took over as the new man on the wall.
25:57
Bucky brought Daisy Johnson along for a space mission as the
26:01
Man on the Wall. After killing the King of CIRO
26:05
and stealing a sacred beast, Reznor, he started digging into
26:09
an empathogen drug called Ilum, which led him to Loki.
26:16
Bucky tracked Loki down to Ascardia, even though an older
26:20
version of Bucky had already shot him with an Ilum bullet.
26:24
Loki eventually revealed that Ilum came from the planet
26:28
Merzibo, ruled by Princess Van Tolen, a new threat in space
26:34
according to Fury. Meanwhile, the older Bucky
26:37
secretly told Daisy about his efforts to fix James future like
26:41
he'd tried with his past selves and other realities.
26:46
James and Daisy made their way to Marzibo, where they were
26:50
greeted peacefully by the Powrie.
26:53
James fell for Princess Van Tolen, but things quickly went S
26:59
when a guy wearing Crossbones masks showed up at the palace,
27:02
stabbed Daisy, and tried to blow the place up.
27:06
Turns out this villain was Nick Fury Junior from the older
27:10
Bucky's reality, and he was out to teach The Winter Soldier
27:14
about hate because his own dad's absence had left a mark on him.
27:18
So daddy issues. Loki stepped in to stop the
27:22
destruction of Merzibo and wanting to control the Illum
27:26
trade and helped take down Crossbones, but Loki tricked
27:30
Daisy into sending her his gun. Moon Planetoid Venture where
27:35
Crossbones would face the 2 Winter Soldiers.
27:39
Daisy had already wounded Crossbones, who was trying to
27:42
escape through a white hole. The older Bucky chased him,
27:45
crashed his shuttle, and ended up back in his original
27:48
universe, where Crossbones died and Bucky was reunited with Van
27:53
Tolen on the reborn planet Cyro. On Earth 616, Loki was
27:59
imprisoned by Van Tolen, and she and Bucky finally got to be
28:02
together. Knowing how deep their feelings
28:05
ran, The Winter Soldier got involved in the search for a
28:09
secret SHIELD operation dealing with Cosmic Cube fragments known
28:13
as the Kobic Initiative. After taking down a few SHIELD
28:17
outposts in his quest for answers, Bucky ended up being
28:20
tracked by Steve. He eventually met up with Steve,
28:24
filled him in on the operation, and escaped before the agents
28:27
could catch him. Bucky later infiltrated Pleasant
28:30
Hill, a prison for the Super villains where the Cosmic Cube
28:33
Kobic was being held. Right before Bucky arrived,
28:37
Baron Zemo had orchestrated a big breakout.
28:40
Bucky found Sam Wilson, who had taken up the shield of Captain
28:43
America after Steve lost his Super soldier serum and was
28:46
looking for Steve. By the time they all reunited,
28:49
Kobik had restored Steve to his prime.
28:54
The three of them teamed up with The Avengers and The Avengers
28:57
Unity Division to put an end to Zemo's plans.
29:02
During the final battle, Kovic realized how Zemo had been
29:05
manipulating her. Bucky prepared Shooter thinking
29:08
she was too dangerous, but she threw him out of the window and
29:11
away from the fight. After everything calmed down,
29:14
Kovic found Bucky again, apologizing and begging to prove
29:17
she could do good. Bucky agreed to take her in AT,
29:21
and she told him that she wanted to bring some friends along too.
29:26
This led to Bucky forming a new version of the Thunderbolts,
29:29
tasked with guarding Kobic and being Earth's last offense
29:33
against alien threats, all while continuing his role as the man
29:37
on the wall. Even with the Thunderbolts,
29:40
Bucky would still go on solo missions sometimes, and even
29:44
though he tried to move on from Natasha, she was always on his
29:47
mind and he still found himself protecting her from the shadows.
29:51
One time, Bucky got captured by Recluse, who wanted to bring
29:57
revenge on Natasha for killing their mentor and leaving her
30:00
behind. When Natasha showed up, she
30:02
freed Bucky and the two teamed up to takedown Recluse.
30:05
Before they left, Bucky let her know that Fury wanted to talk to
30:09
her. Natasha agreed to meet with Fury
30:12
on the moon, and they were joined by Lion.
30:16
Unbeknownst to them, Lion had a secret plan to leave them
30:19
stranded there once they arrived.
30:21
Lyon tried to steal all of Fury's knowledge but got
30:24
overloaded and died. So womp womp.
30:28
Meanwhile, the stowaway was getting ready to leave and their
30:31
oxygen was running low. Natasha gave Bucky all of hers
30:35
so he could stop the ship from taking off as a way to repay him
30:39
for always looking out for her. Once Bucky took control of the
30:42
situation, he rushed back to Natasha, tried to bring her
30:45
back. Just when he was about to get
30:46
up, she groaned and the two kissed.
30:49
Afterwards, Bucky asked if she remembered anything, and Natasha
30:53
just played it cool and avoided answering.
30:56
After a few adventures with the Thunderbolts, Bucky had was
30:59
ambushed by the reformed Masters of Evil led by Baron Zemo.
31:03
He was beaten up and brought before Kobik, who was supposed
31:07
to do Zemo's bidding, but instead she transported herself
31:10
and Bucky away after he agreed to let her fix everything.
31:14
But Kobik's idea of fixing things was turning Bucky into a
31:17
Hydra follower. She made him relive World War 2
31:21
with a few twists to help with his conversion.
31:25
But Bucky held on to those principles, forcing Kovic to
31:28
step in and admit that wasn't supposed to happen.
31:33
That's when Bucky found out about Kovic's secret obsession
31:36
with Hydra and how she had turned Steve Rogers into a Hydra
31:40
agent. Bucky argued with her about what
31:43
she'd done, which caused Kovic to throw a tantrum.
31:47
Her outburst went out of control, threatening not just
31:50
the Masters of Evil and the Thunderbolts, but all of
31:53
existence. Fixer was able to stop her by
31:55
hitting her with the laser beams, but in the process, he
31:58
accidentally shattered Kovac into Cosmic Cube fragments,
32:02
scattering them all over the world.
32:04
Bucky tried to fight off Zemo, but he was betrayed by his
32:07
fellow Thunderbolt Moonstone. After Bucky was captured, Zemo
32:12
and his Masters of Evil took off.
32:15
Zemo decided to get rid of Bucky by strapping him to a replica of
32:19
a plane that killed his father and launching it to explode.
32:23
Before launching the drone, Zemo showed Bucky a holographic
32:26
message from Steve Rogers. In the message, Steve apologized
32:30
for what was about to happen to him be but he said he had no
32:33
choice because Bucky might interfere with his plan to take
32:36
over the US. The message devastated Bucky,
32:40
and he declared that it wasn't Steve.
32:43
Zemo launched the drone, which exploded over the ocean,
32:47
seemingly killing Bucky. But Bucky actually survived the
32:52
explosion and was rescued by Neymour, who took him in as his
32:55
advisor. Later, Neymour introduced Bucky
32:58
to the American superheroes who had come together to fight Hydra
33:01
and restore the country. When Sam Wilson was given the
33:04
last fragment of the Cosmic Cube to an alternate version of Steve
33:07
Rogers, Ant Man shrank Bucky down to a subatomic level inside
33:12
the cube to reach Kobic's mind and bring her and the real Steve
33:16
Rogers back. In the end, the Hydra version of
33:19
Steve was defeated by the real 1.
33:21
So that is the short and the long bit of who Bucky is as a
33:28
character. I hope you learned something and
33:32
I hope you didn't mind me rambling for so long.
33:35
I just really like doing these. So as always I have comics that
33:41
you can check out to get to know Bucky even better.
33:44
So if I miss any please let me know because I'm not a comic
33:49
expert. I just know the things I've read
33:50
and what I've enjoyed. So if you have any better
33:53
options, please let me know in the comments.
33:55
So starting off with where he first appeared, Captain America
33:59
comics #1 the next one, The Winter Soldier run from 2012,
34:06
which I have to say I think does the best job at getting into who
34:10
Bucky is as The Winter Soldier. So highly recommend that run.
34:15
The next one Winter Soldier from 2018 and then Bucky Barnes, The
34:21
Winter Soldier, Falcon and Winter Soldier tales of suspense
34:31
Captain America from 2004 Winter Soldier, the bitter March and
34:39
Captain America, Sentinel of liberty.
34:43
So you have your comics, you have your story, and nothing
34:49
else to do really but to wait for Thunderbolts.
34:52
So keep an eye out for my review of Thunderbolts because I will
34:55
be giving it as soon as I get home from the theater.
34:58
So you get a pretty pretty immediate reaction to what I
35:02
thought of it and I hope you enjoyed this character
35:05
breakdown. So with that being said, have a
35:08
marvelous day.
