- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Amharic with Fexingo! I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Episode 112 — can you believe it? Lucas: I know, right? We've come a long way since episode one. Today we're diving into two super useful verbs: to go and to come. Luna: Oh, I've been wanting these! I always get stuck when I want to say 'I go' or 'come here'. Lucas: Perfect timing then. Let's start with the infinitive forms. To go is መሄድ. Say it with me: መሄድ. Luna: መሄድ. That feels a bit like 'meh heh d'. Lucas: Exactly. And to come is መምጣት. Try it: መምጣት. Luna: መምጣት. That one's trickier — 'mem-chat'? Lucas: Close — the 'ts' sound at the end is like in 'pizza'. መምጣት. Luna: መምጣት. Got it. Lucas: Now let's conjugate 'to go' — I go is እሄዳለሁ. Say it: እሄዳለሁ. Luna: እሄዳለሁ. That's a mouthful! eh heh da leh hoo? Lucas: You got it. And 'I come' is እመጣለሁ. Try: እመጣለሁ. Luna: እመጣለሁ. eh meh cha leh hoo? That 'ch' is like in 'cheese'? Lucas: Yes! You're a natural. Now let's put them in sentences. How do you say 'I go to the market'? Remember market is ገበያ. Luna: Umm... ወደ ገበያ እሄዳለሁ? Lucas: Boom! Perfect. ወደ ገበያ እሄዳለሁ. You added 'to' — ወደ — and the verb at the end. Well done. Luna: Yes! So ወደ ገበያ እሄዳለሁ. That means 'I go to the market'. Lucas: Exactly. Now for 'come here'. 'Here' is እዚህ. The command 'come' in a polite way? That's ና. So 'please come here' — እባክህ ና. Luna: እባክህ ና. 'Please come' — that's so useful. eh bahk huh na? Lucas: Perfect. እባክህ is 'please' when talking to a male. For female it's እባክሽ. But we'll stick with እባክህ for now. Luna: Got it. So if I want to say 'I come from school', it would be ከትምህርት ቤት እመጣለሁ? Lucas: Yes! Using ከ for 'from'. ከትምህርት ቤት እመጣለሁ. You're making sentences already! Luna: This is so empowering. I feel like I can actually say things now. Lucas: That's the goal. And you know what helps? Repetition. Let's do a quick drill. I'll say English, you say Amharic. Luna: Bring it on. Lucas: To go. Luna: መሄድ. Lucas: To come. Luna: መምጣት. Lucas: I go. Luna: እሄዳለሁ. Lucas: I come. Luna: እመጣለሁ. Lucas: I go to the market. Luna: ወደ ገበያ እሄዳለሁ. Lucas: Please come here. Luna: እባክህ ና. Lucas: Nailed it. You're really getting the hang of verb conjugation. Luna: Thanks! It feels good to finally form sentences. And I love that we're not just memorizing words in isolation. Lucas: That's the Fexingo way — real phrases you can actually use. And if this kind of practical learning is working for you, you know what helps keep us going? Luna: What's that? Lucas: Listener support. Luna: Yeah, every little bit helps us keep making episodes. And trust me, there's so much more to learn! Lucas: Alright, back to verbs. Let's try another sentence: 'I go to the library.' Remember library is ቤተ መጻሕፍት. Luna: ወደ ቤተ መጻሕፍት እሄዳለሁ? Lucas: Yes! Wow, you're fast. Now let's make it negative. 'I do not go' is አልሄድም. So 'I do not go to the market' — ወደ ገበያ አልሄድም. Luna: Whoa, that's a new pattern. So you add አል before the verb stem and ም at the end? Lucas: Exactly. For 'to go', the stem is ሄድ. So አልሄድም. Try it. Luna: አልሄድም. ወደ ገበያ አልሄድም. Lucas: Perfect. And for 'to come', negative is አልመጣም. 'I do not come from school' — ከትምህርት ቤት አልመጣም. Luna: ከትምህርት ቤት አልመጣም. That's a lot of words, but I like the rhythm. Lucas: You'll get it with practice. Let's do a quick review of everything we covered today. Luna: Great idea. Lucas: First, the infinitives: to go — መሄድ. To come — መምጣት. Luna: መሄድ, መምጣት. Lucas: I go — እሄዳለሁ. I come — እመጣለሁ. Luna: እሄዳለሁ, እመጣለሁ. Lucas: I go to the market — ወደ ገበያ እሄዳለሁ. Luna: ወደ ገበያ እሄዳለሁ. Lucas: Please come here — እባክህ ና. Luna: እባክህ ና. Lucas: And negatives: I do not go — አልሄድም. I do not come — አልመጣም. Luna: አልሄድም, አልመጣም. Got them. Lucas: You did amazing today, Luna. And listeners, you too. Practice these phrases, try making your own sentences with places you know. Luna: Yes, and come back for the next episode. We'll keep building on these verbs. Lucas: Until then, keep practicing. This is Learn Amharic with Fexingo. See you next time! Luna: Bye!
