- 0:06Coming up in a few minutes, Gene Watson, our MLB
- 0:09insider from the Chicago White Sox front office, will join
- 0:12us and he'll we'll talk about the baseball playoffs down
- 0:17to Major League Baseball's final four. In the American League.
- 0:20The Yankees and Guardians played Game one of the ALCS
- 0:23tonight at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. The second game
- 0:29of the National League Championship Series. The Dodgers and the
- 0:31Mets about to get underway in a few minutes Game
- 0:34two at Dodgers Stadium, Los Angeles, winning last night's series
- 0:38opener nine to nothing. We'll Getjeene's thoughts on the baseball
- 0:41playoffs to this point and what he projects going forward.
- 0:45We'll do that, but of course this is a long
- 0:48Worns Monday, so we should hear from Long Horn's head
- 0:52coach Steve Sarcasian from the weekly news conference, which we
- 0:55brought you in its entirety live this morning here on
- 0:58the Zone. And here's some other thoughts. We brought you
- 1:02some of the comments last hour. But here's some more
- 1:04from Sark. First of all, you know, we just had
- 1:06the story about Kirby Smart talking about the shoving the
- 1:10Mississippi State quarterback he's trying to get through to Coach Schuman,
- 1:12his defensive coordinator, about they wasn't happy about how they
- 1:15religned aligned. Having said all that, George's defense has played
- 1:20largely very successfully, and Sark was asked, what makes that
- 1:24Georgia defense successful?
- 1:25Speaker 2: Well, I think one, they've got a really good scheme,
- 1:28you know. I mean, you know, Kirby Smart and Will
- 1:31Musschamp Glenn Schuman all on the same defensive staff. Those
- 1:35are probably three of the top defensive minds in college football.
- 1:39And then and their sound and what they do. They
- 1:44recruit really good players. You know, they're big and physical upfront,
- 1:47They've got great length in the secondary. They always have
- 1:50very smart, heady safeties to communicate you know, what they're
- 1:54trying to do. Third down, they give you a ton
- 1:57of exotic pressures and different fronts. And with all of that,
- 2:03they end up playing a lot of almost two man coverage.
- 2:05So now you're not only having to beat one guy
- 2:07to get open, you have to beat two. But that's
- 2:10that's the scheming part, you know, and they do a
- 2:12heck of a job with that, and so I think
- 2:14it's a combination of they got a great scheme and
- 2:16a great staff to go along with you know, really
- 2:18talented players that play hard, you know, and they're long
- 2:21and physical, and so those two things combined can make
- 2:25it difficult, you know. I think on the flip side,
- 2:28for us, it's you know, like I touched on earlier,
- 2:30always just trying to find somewhere where you can maybe
- 2:33exploit something that's maybe not a strength and maybe you know,
- 2:36but I don't know if they have too many weaknesses
- 2:38that way, and so we just try to do our
- 2:41best to find some plays they can get us another
- 2:43first down and maybe get the ball in the end zone.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Okay, that's one thing, and then one I think most
- 2:52college football fans, especially the ones who really follow programs closely,
- 2:58understand that home games. Home games for college football teams
- 3:05are big recruiting weekends when potential future members of that
- 3:10football program get a chance coming in and on a
- 3:12recruiting weekend. So you can imagine if you were a
- 3:15top blue chip recruit and Texas was after you was
- 3:25interested in offering you a scholarship. You would probably very
- 3:30easily be able to be at this football game this Saturday.
- 3:34All you have to do is say, hey, I'd like
- 3:35to take my visit during the Georgia game. And they
- 3:38would and they would say sure, why not, Well, it
- 3:40is a big recruiting weekend. So Sark was asked at
- 3:44the news conference, you know, does anything alter or change
- 3:49or the impact of a big game like this when
- 3:53you do have these types of high level recruits coming.
- 3:57Speaker 2: In Every season you go through and you know, we
- 4:00invite a ton of recruits to games and different things,
- 4:03but every year, naturally you have those one or two
- 4:05games that recruits really want to come to and they
- 4:08kind of circle it even in the summertime, and this
- 4:11was one of those games. And so I think we're
- 4:14fortunate that we got a night draw, that it's a
- 4:17night game, and that allows a lot of those kids
- 4:20that play Friday nights to drive in or fly in
- 4:23on Saturday and be here for the ball game at night.
- 4:25And obviously a great atmosphere and DKR and I'm sure
- 4:28we'll have the smoke and the light show and the
- 4:31drones and all the stuff CDC's got planned, you know,
- 4:33for everybody, and I think the kids really appreciate that
- 4:36to know that Longhorn Nation supports their team, but also
- 4:40see a really high level of football and see us
- 4:42compete against what again, like I said, what has been
- 4:46the standard of college football here now for about half
- 4:48a decade or so. And so great opportunity to showcase
- 4:52what our program's about. Great opportunity to showcase what our
- 4:54fan base is about. But also during the day, great
- 4:57opportunity to showcase with the University of excessus about and
- 5:01what the city of Austin has to offer.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Okay, all right, so there's some more thoughts from coach
- 5:06sark We're gonna hear more from Longhorn's head coach Steve
- 5:09Sarkisian throughout this hour and next hour as well. But
- 5:14up next we'll talk Major League Baseball. Geene Watson, our
- 5:17MLB insider, joins us to break down the National League
- 5:22and American League Championship series when we continue on Sports
- 5:25Radio AM thirteen under the zone of the iHeartRadio app.
