- 0:07The New York Islanders faced the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden for the 1975
- 0:12NHL Playoffs. Game 3 of the preliminary rounds of the Stanley Cup Playoffs took place on
- 0:17April 11, 1975. The Islanders and Rangers finished evenly matched during the regular
- 0:22season, finishing in second and third place in the Patrick Division. The Rangers had qualified
- 0:28for the playoffs for several years, but rarely were able to get past the semifinals. 1975
- 0:33was the first time the Islanders had entered the playoffs, having just entered into the
- 0:37league as a new expansion team in 1972. The best of three series was tied at one game
- 0:42a piece. This audio recording is from the radio broadcast featuring announcers Marv
- 0:46Albert and Sal Massina.
- 0:50In the second period, Chicago Blackhawks lead the Boston Bruins 3-0, that game being played
- 0:55up in Boston. The series is even at one victory a piece. Later tonight, and this game was
- 1:01originally scheduled for Saturday, has been changed to tonight. That'll start, I guess,
- 1:0611 o'clock New York time. It'll be Toronto Maple Leafs at the LA Kings. That series tied
- 1:11at one game a piece with LA and Toronto both winning overtime games. Last night, Pittsburgh
- 1:17beating St. Louis 5-3 and they clinched that series two games to none. That about does
- 1:22it for the pregame show. I'm Sal Massina. The pregame show is brought to you by Bond
- 1:27Close. You get more than savings at Bond's and by Getty, the company that sells both
- 1:32premium and no-lead. Getty, they've got what's best for your car. This is WIW, Metro Media
- 1:38Radio in New York, home of the Giants, the Knicks, the Rangers, and the Mets. Tonight's
- 1:43broadcast of the Rangers is a production of Madison Square Garden Center, Incorporated.
- 1:48The man is not out. Thank you, Sal, and tonight's game is brought to you by Shafe Revere, by
- 1:54Bristol Myers, makers of the tennis, by the people of Eastern Airlines, by manufacturers
- 2:00Hanover Crust, and by Miles Laboratories, makers of Alka-Seltzer. The Rangers and Antilas
- 2:07will be on ice in just a moment. We'll be back after this break.
- 2:12The people of Eastern believe they're going to make your next Eastern flight a great flight.
- 2:18We don't waste time on the ground, so you won't waste time getting in the air. When
- 2:22you're bags are with me, you've got to believe they'll be okay. Part of my job at Eastern
- 2:26is solving travel problems. If you've got one, call me. If there's a small piece of
- 2:31styrofoam, I'm going to find it and take it. You've got to believe. You've got to be ready
- 2:37to fly Eastern. If you're flying to Florida, Eastern can give you more than any other airline,
- 2:45with the most daily non-stops to cities in Florida, including Miami, Fort Lauderdale,
- 2:49Jacksonville, Tampa, St. Petersburg, West Palm Beach, Sarasota, and Orlando, home of
- 2:55Walt Disney World. Take a money-saving Eastern night coach to most cities in Florida and
- 3:00save about 20% off the regular day coach airfare. For reservations to Florida, call the travel
- 3:06agent or call Eastern the wings of man. The officials have hit the ice. The referee tonight
- 3:15is Bruce Hood, and the linesmen are Neil Armstrong and Ray Schiapponello. The Niners and Allamers
- 3:23leading in the final game of the 74-75 season for one of these clubs. The victor takes the
- 3:31first round, two games to one of them, goes on to round number two and solve several possibilities
- 3:38as to who the winner here tonight, the Rangers or the Allamers, would meet in round number
- 3:43two. Here we go talking about possibilities again, Bob. And right now with Boston trailing
- 3:47Chicago, if either LA or Boston lose, the Rangers or the winner of tonight's game will
- 3:54play Montreal. If LA and Boston win, both teams win, the winner of this game will play
- 4:00Montreal. And if both LA and Boston lose, the winner of this game will play Pittsburgh.
- 4:05All games opening on Sunday. It's a wild situation. I really think the end result has paid off
- 4:13for the national hockey league. The playoff structure has worked very well. The problem
- 4:17is though that no one, absolutely no one understands the means to the end. And Bob, it's funny,
- 4:23you have a scout in the past, you know you would play the winner of another series, you
- 4:26just go scout that series. Here the NHL clubs have to scout every series. We'll talk to
- 4:32Jack Riley, a Pittsburgh scout, between the second and third periods tonight. He's gone
- 4:37to each series. He was at the Chicago Boston game last night, which he said was a great
- 4:41game. Actually, the Toronto LA game last night, which he said was a great game. So very complicated
- 4:46situation, but very interesting for all the fans. Particularly now with the Chicago Broncos
- 4:51in a surprise, leading the Boston Bruins by the score of 3-0 in the second period. The
- 4:58Blackhawks were felt at a round of it opening game, getting blasted by the score of 8-2.
- 5:03They won it overtime last night. And I tell you, of course, Billy Ray has got to be doing
- 5:08one of the great coaching jobs of the season. Bob, I thought they would be blown out of the
- 5:12ice even in Chicago last night. They blew a 3-1 lead. So Boston tied it up and they went
- 5:17into overtime and they won it. Esposito must be giving them the goaltending they needed.
- 5:22I hear Gilles Gilbert, who's pretty shaky throughout the season, is having a shaky series
- 5:27or had a shaky game last night. Rangers and other out-of-this have hit the ice. Joe Villamue
- 5:33are leading the Rangers on and he will be in that tonight to find him a goal to our left.
- 5:37And Al Arbor of the out-of-this coming back with goaltender Billy Smith for this third
- 5:42and final game. And the Antilas in the first period will defend the goal to our right.
- 5:48So the Rangers will skate left to right. And the Antilas from right to left. You're hearing
- 5:53it all right here on WNEW, Metromedia Radio in New York, 11.30 on the dial.
- 6:01Tomorrow afternoon, the Knicks and the Rockets at Houston, third and final game of that series.
- 6:08And you'll hear it right here, WNEW airtime at 20 minutes past 1 o'clock.
- 6:15Right now the capacity crowd here at Madison Square Garden getting to its feet.
- 6:21And we shall hear the playing and singing of our national anthem.
- 6:27The home of the brave and the brave.
- 6:39Oh, say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
- 6:48What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming,
- 6:56Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
- 7:04O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming,
- 7:12And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
- 7:20Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
- 7:28Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave,
- 7:39O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
- 7:56Well, so the crowd is sky high once again tonight.
- 8:00Well, it was sky high last night.
- 8:02And Tuesday night we remarked on how we thought it was the loudest crowd
- 8:06game here at the new Madison Square Garden.
- 8:36Oh, it's a two-step run.
- 8:38Rony Harris comes over and he's decked by Parisi.
- 8:40Plunk is loose back behind that Ranger goal line.
- 8:43Harris falls on top of it and players call.
- 8:45Face off coming up now to the right of the Ranger net.
- 8:48And Ronnie Harris playing in place of the injured Nick Beverly.
- 8:51And last night a tremendous game for Ronnie Harris.
- 8:53Scored the fourth Ranger goal, hitting all night long.
- 8:56And Nick Beverly still has problems with his leg.
- 8:59It only saw a couple of shifts last night.
- 9:01And I see Harris playing tonight,
- 9:03so it looks like Ronnie will be playing throughout the game.
- 9:05Deep in range, Harris up with it up the near side, looks to clear it ahead, he does, rolls it out to center, taken by the backskating Lewis, ahead for Gruen, a lead for Westphalen across the Ranger line, the pass too deep, Vickers gets to it, rolls it around the board.
- 9:18Parisi and Harris come together on the corner, smack back behind that Ranger goal, on Westphal takes, drives to center, intercepted by Vickers and he starts up with Rattell at Gilbert on his right, Vickers across the out of the line, shoots in, left side of Smith, Westphal chases it down, takes a bump from Gilbert and rolls it out of the zone, and center, Vickers pull the Rangers, cross-ice now for Gilbert.
- 9:39Gilbert makes the turn, loses control, Lewis backs it back to center, Parisi and Harris come together and neither can get to the park, Gilbert comes away with it, flips to the left defense to Park, Park ahead for Rattell, holds it away from the checky Marshall, leads Gilbert, it hits his skate, bounds all the way down across the out of the goal line, Lewis is back for it, Lewis moves to the near side, takes a check from Rattell, throws it ahead to Gruen, Gruen now a flip for Parisi, Parisi has difficulties, it's snapped away by Gilbert, Park still in the out of the ice, now the out of the line,
- 10:08comes up with it and Marshall moves to center, a flip for the left defense for Lewis and Lewis loops it in, left side of Villamur allowing for an out of the line change, Vickers back forward, rolls it around now for Kachuk, cross-ice for Fairburn, kicks it ahead to himself and shoots in, it's slapped down by Dennis Puckman who sends to center, Sanderson there, loses on a stick check, the puck still loose, taken by Puckman, ahead it goes now to center-ice to Bourne, Bourne is checked by Marat, loses control and Kachuk takes, spins to his own goal,
- 10:38Kachuk around Bourne at center, now drops for Sanderson and he throws it in, right side of Smith, Smith looks it behind the net for Puckman, he comes off the board and it's picked up by Bourne, he's to center with Gillies right, across the range a lot of back pass for Gillies, knocked away now in front it goes, shot on goal from in close by Harris, is stopped by Villamur and Greshner comes up with it, Greshner spinning back behind as that bothered by the stick of Harris, now cuts to the near side, he's hit there by Gillies, Greshner and Gillies start to go at each other,
- 11:08the play continues as Sanderson tries to leap back but it's knocked away, comes back to center and it's taken by Marat, Marat puts on the stick of Kachuk, Kachuk spinning, a drop for Marat still at center-ice and he shoots in, no score, we're 2.45 into this first period, now Jerry Hart takes it back behind the outer net, watch by Kachuk, shoots it on the right wing for Harris, Harris up to center, Harris looks to lead St. Laurent, knocked away, now he shoots in as he is hit hard by Marat and he ends up in the ranger bench,
- 11:38Jerry Hart, by Harris, was really clobbered by Gill Marat and he ended up skates first, tumbling over the sideboard and into the ranger bench, over train of Frank Pace, Rangers and Outerless are laughing it up right now.
- 11:55Jerry Hart with a big smile on his face, actually he went in head first, Marvin skates up in the air and his skates came down on top of Frank Pace's head, I never saw Frank move so fast trying to get out of the way of that one.
- 12:06Well there's a memorable moment in the career of Billy Harris, he's alright physically and that's where the glass cuts in, there's an angle there, just a little triangular corner where Harris went in, he didn't have the room of the full bench or a player to fall on.
- 12:23Alright face off now at the ranger line controlled by Park, Park cross-eyes for Harris, Harris a lead for Stemkowski at center, sends to Butler, knocked away by Howard, Howard tries to clear, gets it off to the ranger line but Park there, a hit for Urban hits his skate, comes back forward, back pass for Harris, a return for Park at the far boards, a hit for Stemkowski and he shoots it in, right side of the island and that, Marshall and Urban come together, Marshall beats Urban to it, winds it around for Howard, Howard starts up for the islanders on the left wing, most of the time he's on the left wing,
- 12:53he's at the center, right wing, three nice from across the ranger line, fakes the slap on Parkman, loses control, Park is retrieved by Park at the far side, he overskates as he's hit by Nicegram, Park still loose at the far boards, a battle picked off by Marshall, he feeds in close, broken up beautifully by Butler knocking it away from St. Laurent who is stationed in the slot.
- 13:12And now Park hit from behind by Howard able to unleash it to Harris and here's Harris out of the zone, three man rush for the Rangers, Harris shoots in, a chase for the Puck, Stemkowski after beating to it, Urban recovers the shot as a cut save and a beauty by Smith to hold on, that time a mix up by the islanders on the back line nearly cost them.
- 13:30Burt Marshall sprawling, sprawl right by the Puck, Smith just had his glove there and Urban shot it right into it and he made that reaction but he made the save that's going to make him, give him that little bit of confidence, that's the first shot on goal the Rangers have had and we've played three minutes of 59 seconds.
- 13:46Jerry Butler breaking up a play in front of the ranger end, that play developed because Butler was hanging out in center zone looking to break away on a Brad Park pass.
- 13:54Rattell and West ball on the space off, keeping out on the ice, loose up the circle now Rattell gets it to the point, a crash there, he shoots, sticked aside by Smith, Puck ends up in the corner, Rattell comes over, battles with Bruin and the islanders able to clear it out of the zone.
- 14:08Marant is back four, Marant shoots it ahead, Rattell could not get to it and carries all the way down, left side of Smith, Park now takes back behind the islander net.
- 14:17Watched by the forechecking Rattell, this Rattell, Gilbert, Vickers line had a tremendous night last night at the Coliseum. Here's Dennis Puckman out of the zone, a leap for Bruin at center, Bruin on the rush across the ranger line, a feed for Parisi, Parisi comes into the corner, now feeds it back, Dennis Puckman,
- 14:34Bruin takes it away, out to the point to Hart, he slaps it, it's deflected short and Rattell takes, Parisi and Greshner getting involved in front of the ranger net and now Marant starts up in the loose part, here's Marant leading Gilbert at center, Gilbert gets it, boosts the lead number nine.
- 14:49A leap for Rattell, he comes in, he shoots, kicks it, by Billy Smith, that's a big save with Rattell stopped on a breakaway. Now here's Bruin to center, he's up to the ranger line, takes a hard check from Greshner, sends to the corner, it bounds behind the ranger goal line, Vickers there, swings it around the boards, intercepted by Westpaw, out it goes to Bruin, slaps stopped by Villamur.
- 15:08Good save by the stick of Joe Villamur, Rangers can't clear, Bruin tries to keep it, it's knocked away by Greshner, it comes to center, as the out of this change on the fly, Bourne picks up the loose part, Bourne flies up across the ranger line, breaks for the far side, now holds up, cross-ice pass broken up by the stick of Rattell and taken by Greshner who comes in out of center.
- 15:27Here's Rattell, Vickers left, Fabburn right, across the out of the line, a drop for Vickers, Vickers breaking wide on Hart, moves to the near side, now throws in front for Rattell, he turns, could not get the shuttle out the park, his shot rolls wide.
- 15:39On the rebound, a chase by Gillies of the island, slaps it out of danger, out to center ice, Harris back forward, ball to the ranger, stick handles and Bourne, ahead it goes to Kachuk, Kachuk is up to the out of the line, Kachuk cuts in with Fabburn the prele, he and Hart bump as he moves to the near corner.
- 15:53Kachuk cuts for Havanet in front, Fabburn struck, it's stopped, rebound, Sanderson is blocked by Hart, ends up in the corner, Dennis Putnam there, flicks it along the boards and out of the zone he counts it after minutes, and into the line.
- 16:04The out of is in front, a force to ice the puck, the touch made by Hart, and we'll get a whistle on the face off coming up now, deep and out of the ice, no score, first period, six minutes gone by, let's pause for this world.
- 16:15Alka-Seltzer brings you a message from the old one too. Well, your first flat in 15 years, so you're holding up traffic for miles, and your wife is waiting with your favorite dinner, burnt lasagna. We'll be right there with the old one too.
- 16:31Alka-Seltzer, let's get out of here. For aches and pains with upset stomach, try Alka-Seltzer with specially buffered aspirin plus antacids, use only as directed. It gives the old one too, the old one too.
- 16:46This is Marv Albert with Sal Masina for Madison Square Garden in New York, the season on the line for both the Rangers and the Outers right here, third and final game of the best two out of three, and we are scoreless with six minutes gone by, first period. Rangers have had the better of play thus far.
- 17:01On the draw, sent back behind the out of the goal line, Lewis there, chased by Kacuk, loses control, loses to Kacuk, slides it to the slot to Faber and he's dumped down the play, cannot get to it, kept alive by the Rangers, then Gillies takes it away from Sanderson, sprints to center, he's up across the Ranger on a drive, six save made by Villanueva, lost it momentarily, and then he clears it into the corner, Harris there, for the Rangers, looks to make his move on forward and he does, goes along the board, throws it ahead now for Kacuk, he's to center, back pass for Harris, cuts him with a drive, whoops, save made by Villanueva.
- 17:30Save made by Smith, and he holds on, Billy Smith with a sweeping glove, did not expect Harris to shoot what he did.
- 17:38Rodney got that off quickly, a quick snapshot, low, Smith making a glove save in front of his pad and Ron Harris penetrating twice, that time he gave it to Kacuk and he ran it back and he used his strength to get through and take that shot.
- 17:50It's incredible how once again, Ron Harris, during the course of playoffs, is a different hockey player, of course he had all kinds of injuries this season, but he is a real money player.
- 18:03Chicago now leading Boston 5-3 at the end of 2, on the face, Rangers control, it's sent to the right point, Harris cannot handle it, bounce over a stick, Harris to center, chase for the puck, Harris beats Gillies to it, and Leesberger, Kacuk.
- 18:16Cross-ice off the boards now for Park, Park bothered by Marshall, stick checks it away, and Marshall shoots it in, left side of Villamur, Gill makes the stop behind the goal for Harris, and Lees for Kacuk.
- 18:28Now Kacuk tries a return pass that is knocked aside by Howitt, Harris recovers ball, the Rangers slides it out to center, and Marshall is there to flag it down, a hit for St. Laurent at the Ranger line, he's bottled up by Park, and the loose puck retrieved by Kacuk.
- 18:41A hit for Fairburn, checked off the play by Hart, good play by Hart, he's hacked that now by Fairburn, and knocks it away from Hart, Marshall takes, shoots it out to center to Nice, from Lees St. Laurent, and across the Ranger line, stick handles in, but the back end of it is wide.
- 18:54On the rebound, St. Laurent crushed against the boards by Greshner, Howitt comes over, along with Stankowski, they combine to freeze it, and play his call.
- 19:03Some words in the corner between Howitt, Greshner, and Stankowski, their developments further, then some articulation, and we'll get a face off now to the left side of Jules Villamur, 12 and a half remaining, first period, no score.
- 19:18And that's the first trace of any pushing and shoving by a player, we've had some good body checks, but no fighting as we did last night, and there were many fights last night, about five to my recollection.
- 19:31Now St. Laurent and Stankowski are in the play side, and St. Laurent jumps the gun, so Nice from steps in, that's the play of Greshner from Fairburn, as they cross-hike for the wrap.
- 19:41Shoots it ahead now to Stankowski, stunner, a right wing feed for Butler, he's in across the outer line, loses on a poke check, kept it off by Urban, he swings it over the corner, looks to Sonny, he's taken out of the play by Hart, and Urban throws the bat hard, with his hand, we get a whistle, and the opponent are coming.
- 19:58This would indicate that Urban took a punch at Howard, which was the case, and the Rangers will be down a man.
- 20:07Well, he is, Howard, looking to see what kind of a signal the hood is giving as far as the penalty, it could be a roughing call, but Teddy Urban going off, it's a roughing penalty, exactly for throwing that fist, as you mentioned.
- 20:22The Islanders will have the man advantage two minutes for roughing 746, the call on Ted Urban, face off coming up now outside the New York Islander blue line, St. Laurent at center, Howard, and Nice from out the wings, Dennis and John Putnam at the points, and a defense with the crowd here at the guard, Sanderson at number one, Park and Harris are back.
- 20:47On the face, Howard controls the center, eludes Harris, but loses on a stick check, sent back to center, St. Laurent up with a chutes in, knocked down by Villamur, and then he winds it around the boards, Howard and Harris come together, Park is loose on the corner, it still is out to the point, the puttman, his shot goes wide out of the flexion, on the rebound, Puttman looks to clear it, cannot, kept him out, Puttman, his shot is a kick save made by Villamur, just to get a piece of the skate, it's pulled around the boards, John Puttman takes, sent back to home, and after this, Villamur comes out, stick it aside, hits it out,
- 21:17puttman, he's back to the corner, Howard is there, he's checked by Harris, Howard turns, throws in the slot, intercepted by Park, he loses control, but it's recovered by Sanderson, he leaves Puttman, Puttman traces it down, and then Smith, Smith beats Puttman to it, Smith has a position, Smith shoots through the net, and it's left aside by the stick of Puttman.
- 21:34A nice between Butler and McColton, Smith, and Smith just did beat him, now here are the out of the back, St. Laurent from center shoots in left side of Villamur, played off the boards by Nicebrom, back pass to the board, John Puttman, a high drive, his deflected drive, on the rebound, it's Harris, for the Rangers, and he guns it all the way down.
- 21:49We have 50 seconds remaining on that Ranger penalty to Teter, and both of them make changes on the move, John Puttman back to the rebound, and his foul play, on the crisscross starts up with Gruen, now feeds Gruen at center, Gruen swings to his right side, a drop for Puttman, and he shoots in, left side of Villamur, he makes the stick stop, leaves for Greshner, banks it around the board, batted back in by Westphal, behind the Ranger goal line, Greshner there, swings it around for Sanderson, looks to clear, and he does.
- 22:16Puttman to center, here's a chase between Dennis Puttman and Billy Faber, Puttman beats Faber into it, cuts into the corner, now looks to move up by 6th century, pass Faber, he's to center, he stick him, he's up to the range line, a drop for Gruen at the right point, he goes into the crowd, it is Brad, right side of Villamur, bounds off the glass, ends up on the near side, Parisi keeps it in, he is bothered by Greshner, can't clear, comes to Puttman, it closed Gruen, knocked away, Bucke still is, Greshner bats it away from Parisi, Parisi back forward in the corner now, rules it out to the point, Dennis Puttman is shot, is blocked by Faber, taken off by Greshner,
- 22:46the Rangers break out a three-on-two led by Greshner, moves up to the out of the line, a back pass for Irvin, but a whistle for an offside, Irvin is back, and as he cut in across that item of low line, an offside whistle blown, and he'll bring a back face off coming up now, offside the item of blue man.
- 23:04Ten minutes nine seconds remaining in this first period with no score.
- 23:08Irani Greshner with some key defensive plays, one time Westfall had Villamur down, Greshner coming back to pick up Westfall's stick, ironic situation on that breakaway by Butler, or the race for the puck, had Butler touched the puck first, it would have been a face off in the Ranger end for a two line or an offside pass.
- 23:25Now Rattell is back with Vickers left, Joe Bear right, Ron Harris, Brad Park on the back line, the Islanders make a line change, Andres St. Laurent stepping on with Bob Nicebroom on the right, Gary Howard left, Burt Marshall, Dave Lewis are back on the face off controlled by the Islanders, Marshall ahead for St. Laurent, Park falls down, St. Laurent moves up to the Ranger line, but he's met there by Rattell who kicks it aside, and it ends up at center ice, picked off by St. Laurent across the ice now and across the Ranger line, back pass nicely,
- 23:55Nicebroom shot blocked by Park, good play by Brad as he starts up away from Nicebroom, moves to center, loses on a stick check however with Nicebroom coming back to break it up, and now a two line pass thrown by Lewis and cut it for the cutting, Howard, and we get a whistle for offside.
- 24:10John Rattell with a goal and three assists last night, that itself tells a story, but John is skating so strong, that time Brad Park falling down, Rattell going in to break up the play, here's something else this year, he's never been this strong so late in the hockey season.
- 24:24Walter Kachruth also showing some signs of coming back strong because Walter really had his problems the last six, seven weeks of the regular season and he looks extremely strong right now, on the face off Vickers at the far side, can't control, it's slapped out of the zone,
- 24:39Gilbert back forward, circles at center, met by the checking Parisi hacking away as Gilbert backhands it in, it's behind the goal tender Smith, taken by Lewis, whips it around the boards for Drewan, cuts away from the checking Gilbert, rolls it across ice now to Marshall, he's checked by Gilbert,
- 24:55I don't know, it's in very deliberate fashion looking to get it out of the zone and finally they do, it's sent to center, wrist burn, it snaps it ahead, loses on a stick check now to Vickers, across the line with a pass for Rattell, he tries to back pass but it's intercepted by Drewan,
- 25:09Drewan over skates, he throws it away, he shoots save made, lost by Smith and the defenseman Lewis started to fall on it, now Smith does, our giveaway almost cost the out of this, Parisi giving it away and Vickers with the shot is a funny situation, all the Rangers sort of let up, the puck dropped behind Smith of course, Vickers the only Ranger in the zone as both Rattell and Gilbert trying to come back to back check and Lewis didn't want to fall on it, finally he said Smith fell on it,
- 25:38but not a Ranger within 15 feet of Smith running down, Rattell 58 remaining first period, no score, Parthorn and Walter Kachuk on this face right side of the outlander net and it's controlled by Gillies of the islanders to center with Harris right, up across the Ranger line breaks wide on Kreschner,
- 25:55an angle shot is stopped by the chest of Villamur and Kachuk on the rebound clears it out, Faber at center, Leeds Polis breaking it across the other end, he shoots, stick save made by Smith, a great save by Billy Smith and Drewan able to clear it out of the zone, Marat takes it at center, flicks in but the Rangers ahead of the play at offside, well it's a sharp night thus far for Islander goaltender Billy Smith.
- 26:17A lot of conjecture about who Al Alba was going to use in the nets tonight for the Islanders and he came up with Billy Smith and he's made the wise choice so far, Billy's super so far, good saves on Rattell, kind of good save on Polis and keeping the Islanders in a hockey game with some beauties.
- 26:32Kachuk the center, Polis left, Faber on right, Marat and Kreschner are back for the outlanders, Bourne at center, Billy Harris right, Gillies left, Dennis Pumpkin on the right defense and Hart on the left side and on the face off at center ice it is Harris and Kachuk, played by Hart back at the out of the line, watched by the forechecking Kachuk, slides it ahead and is sent to by Polis, Leeds Kreschner at the out of the line goes over the slab, whoops save made by Smith and he holds on.

On the face high drive by Faber, knocked down by Smith and the out of the clear it out, Kreschner then shoots it right back in, right side of Smith, Dennis Pumpkin is back for it, rolls it around the board, Hart is there, heart check by Kachuk returns to Pumpkin, Pumpkin in traffic, comes ahead ends up at center and Kreschner takes there, Kreschner's passed battled away by Gillies recovered by Kreschner, back at center.
- 27:50Back at the range of eye, watched now by Bourne, shoots it ahead for Faber, leaf for Polis, he's to the out of the line, breaks in with a shot, back to flex short with Kachuk turned around and pooped by Gillies in a penalty up-gather.
- 28:02What Gillies, Hanover and out of Kachuk, and the Rangers for the first time tonight will have the man advantage. A fortunate penalty for Gillies to take, Polis saw that, got that puck at the blue line, when he gets that puck at the blue line he looks at nothing else but net. Kachuk had to step on Gillies and he was covering, Gillies covering Kachuk all the way in but a little too much with the arms and he threw out of Kachuk down.
- 28:2612-17, time of the penalty, they are calling it interference on Gillies. Well in contrast to last night's game as anticipated, this is a very cautious hockey game, so both teams playing it calm, they want to win the hockey game, fighting is out so far this evening and here's the first range of power play opportunity, let's see if they can make it pay off.
- 28:52On the face and in front Billy Smith winds it back behind the net, Lewis there, checked by Middleton, tries to clear Kanak, kept in by Park. Park pulls the string, turns on Henning, cuts to the left corner, Henning falls down, now Park leads Gilbert, Gilbert shoots it wide, on the rebound comes back to Park, he shoots, save made by Middleton in front, pushed aside by Lewis, Park sent to the corner, battle for a fair, Lewis tries to clear Kanak, never met Gilbert, sends it back to the court, delivered it by Lewis, who pulls it ahead for Westphal, the lead for Henning.
- 29:21At center, Henning loses control and Gilbert takes it back, the Rangers will have to start the power play all over, another penny remaining on that Gillies penalty, Gilbert starts up, Rangers skate left to right ahead, Middleton breaking up center, back pass Ratel, he cuts in, feeds it from Pickens, save and a beauty by Smith, and he holds on.
- 29:40He just camped himself in front of the cage, he anticipated beautifully, Ratel with a smooth backhand pass out to Pickens in front, Pickens had no place to put it but right into Billy Smith, and he has been sharp in his first period.
- 29:576.54 remaining first period, Rangers and Islanders are schoolless, a minute 11 remaining on the penalty for Clark Gillies, Ratel and Westphal will go on the space off now, left side of Billy Smith, on the draw, sent in front, Smith looks to clear and he does, Park might have batted down but could not, and it carries all the way down, Gilbert back forward now for the Rangers, Gilbert with a drop pass, dangerous pass, had Henning been another step behind,
- 30:26he would have had an interception in front of Villamur, however the Rangers move back, Middleton cuts in, a lead for Ratel, knocked back the other way, Gilbert takes it on the boards, loses on a stick check and Henning able to slide it all the way down, 45 seconds remaining now on that Islander penalty.
- 30:41Park is back forward, a lead now for Ratel, Ratel starts up with Gilbert back to Ratel, moving up center, over skates, has the puck knocked over by Westphal, recovered by Vickers, but a whistle for an offside as Vickers made the touch, he was ahead of the play at offside, but bring it back.
- 30:56Let's step out right here and pause for station identification.
- 31:00Oh what a great, this is Gene Craven, this, this, folks it's so exciting, I don't mean WNEW New York where you're hearing the game, I mean my show every morning from 5.30 to 10, folks don't leave me.
- 31:10Marv Albert, Sal Massina, Madison Square Garden in New York, 6 minutes 17 seconds left, first period, Rangers and Islanders no score.
- 31:19On the face off, Rangers shoot in, they have the man advantage, Hart Christi, clear cannot, kept in by Middleton, gets off to Ratel, Ratel spins up an airboard, speaks with the goal line of Middleton, Middleton tries to center, Vickers could not control Westphal first, and he starts up, shoots it out to center, center forward, Henning is too deep and Gilbert is back forward.
- 31:37Just 15 seconds down on that Gilly's penalty, here's Gilbert out of the zone as the Rangers change on the go, ahead it goes to Park, Park is up to the out of the line, Park around Westphal, back pass for Gilbert, Gilbert tries to return to Park, knocked away by Popman, looks to Finip, penalty has expired as Gilly's returns, the park is frozen at the far corner, and play is gone.
- 31:59The Islanders did a very good job in killing off that penalty. And Lorne Henning and Eddie Westphal as they did here Tuesday night, keeping the Rangers bottled up, the one good opportunity the Rangers did get was on that break, with Ratel being set up by Middleton and then Ratel feeding Vickers in front, Gilly Smith was there.
- 32:17Now the face off, right side of Smith, St. Laurent will go against Stemkowski, on the draw comes to Marotta for left, backs up and then shoots in back behind the Islander, Popman there now with Stemkowski, they turn each other around, Irvin comes over to try to dig it loose, but we got a whistle from Bruce Hootie lost sight of it.
- 32:37And that means face off, deep in Islander ice, five and a half remaining, first period, no score, again St. Laurent against Stemkowski, someone jumped the gun and they'll do it again.
- 32:50The Natsman race, Stepanella sets them up once again on the draw, Stem in front, knocked aside by Smith, Dennis Popman rolls it around the board, Brechner able to keep it, sends the button, angle drive on the screen goes wide, flagged down by Nystrom at the far board, close to center, now up across the Ranger,
- 33:06and I believe it flipped out of the post, shot really was not that close, it was off the outside of the post, the crowd roared, Millenville was surprised because he thought it went way wide, now here's Irvin to center, Irvin up to the out of the line, Irvin goes in and drive his line, on the rebound it comes back to the right point, Butler cannot get to it, Nystrom does, Nystrom moves it out of the zone, but it's recovered by Brechner at center, feeds cross-ice now to Marotta, head it goes to Irvin, Irvin lead for
- 33:36Butler, takes it now over states and Satter out of the lab, and the out of the zone, McVilliman and Brechner come together at center, they both hit the ice, Hatt works it free, spins it as Irvin and shoots it out to the right wing, Nystrom, Nystrom up to the range of arm of the slap, save made off the right pans of Villamur, leaves for Sanderson,
- 33:53moves it around the boards to Faber, Faber starting up for the Rangers, met by Saint Laurent at center, his pass stolen by Lewis, Lewis back the other way, fans on the pass, take it away by Marotta, Marotta goes in with Faber, Faber across the out of the line with a slap and a slap by Gillies, and he clears it out of the zone, at center it's Sanderson and he dumps it right back in, left side of Billy Smith, Lewis and Faber in pursuit, heart check by Faber on Lewis, Puck ends up on the stick of Burt Marshall and he sends it ahead, here's Bourne out of the zone, Nystrom right and Gillies left, a leap for Gillies,
- 34:23he cuts it, he fakes, shoots, scores! Clark Gillies beating Cheryl Villamur between his pads, between his legs and the Islanders lead it 1-0.
- 34:35Rangers getting caught in deep, all three forwards going for the net, the play busted up by Burt Marshall, he got the puck out and the three on two developing, Gillies getting a shot from the angle, when you penetrate and all three forwards go in, that's what could happen, Sanderson, Faber,
- 34:51Kachuk all getting caught on a play and a great goal by Clark Gillies, good set up by Bob Bourne.
- 34:56Mark Gillies who scored the game winner here Tuesday night on a breakaway, splitting through the defense, has rarely hurt the Rangers this season, and this rookie has come a long way the last few months.
- 35:08Gillies has put the Islanders on top 1-0.
- 35:12Time of the goal, 16 minute mark, on the face off, Marker rolls it in, right side of Villamur, chased down by Harris, he ranks it away and the Natives now for Kachuk, Kachuk the lead for Sanderson, Sanderson guns one in, it's blocked down low by Smith, Smith drops it back behind the net now for Lewis,
- 35:29Lewis watched by the foretracking, Faber shoots it ahead, ends up at center, it's taken out by Harris, Harris spinning, dumps it back in across the out of the blue line, Lewis throws it out to center, Park takes it there, that goal by Gillies assisted by Bourne and Marshall at the 16 minute mark, now Reem Heels from the Rangers up to center, elite for Kachuk loses control, Gillies snaps it back out of the zone, Heels takes it center, waits for Sanderson to move onside, throws it ahead for Kachuk, stick handles in, back pass Faber out to the point, Park he shoots it in,
- 35:58it's blocked by the skates of Marshall, taken by Billy Harris of the out of the news and he decides to ice it, fires it all the way down, across the Rangers goal line, the touch made by Ron Harris and we get a whistle for icing, Burt Marshall stopping that shot from Park, and the out of the defenseman has stopped many shots, last night the Rangers had six goals but he only had 13 shots on net, on goal time to Glenn Resch when he was removed, Burt Marshall, played a significant part Wednesday night on Major Pathways, he came up with at least three bites,
- 36:28he's right in front of the goaltender, they're doing it again, Grandpa taking that shot, that was Tuesday night, Grandpa taking that shot and Marshall getting away from the shot from the point, all right Rotel is on with Vickers and Kilbagh, Greshner and Morata back, Westphalen and Rotel on the space off now, right side of Billy Smith and the story of this first period has been the great goaltending of Billy Smith of the New York Islanders, they lead it 1-0 on the face both Westphalen and Rotel jump the gun, and as has happened many times in the past, the great goalie
- 36:58the goal tender makes many good saves for his team, his team comes back and scores the goal and they're up 1-0, again they'll face right side of Smith, both clubs lining up now again the Lionsman Scampanella will drop it he does, Vickers battles with Gruen from the loose Park, Westphal comes over he's crunched by Morata but he's able to clear it all the way down, it carries across the Ranger goal line, Greshner back makes the touch, and once again an icing and fraction against the Outer Thirts, and Morata is going to be a close tight shaking game,
- 37:28that Islanders at their best this season have been in low scoring games when they can keep the opposition go ahead of the opposition and then check all night.
- 37:36They have the players to check that a well disciplined hockey club with icing the last two times in 30 seconds.
- 37:41They're doing it tonight.
- 37:42I have the best controls at the third quarter and he shoots it as blocked by a heart.
- 37:48Take it off by Drew and up to center Westfall right up across the range of line. He slows it up now shoots it in front.
- 37:58The corner out of Drew and Drew and back out to Pottman. His drive goes wide on the rebound.
- 38:03Westball keeps it alive, spins to the corner in front to Drew and checked off the play by Greshner and Marat picks up the bouncing puck.
- 38:10Right wing Joe Bear, leaps with talent center. He's up across the island of the line and the slot he shoots a very rapid as Drew juggles it hard on by Goal Tender Billy Smith.
- 38:19So the face off coming up now to the right side of Smith. Two minutes twelve seconds remaining in this first period and the Islanders lead it one nothing.
- 38:28The goal by Gillies an angled drive from the right of Villamur and the beat up between his fans.
- 38:34They assist at the 16 minute mark again the island of the fans Garrett Jerry Hart making a good play in front of Billy Smith pulling a range of pulling the islanders out of trouble on the face off Marshall rolls it around.
- 38:47Lewis takes it the near side back pass now for Marshall Marshall spinning in his own and throws it ahead now for ice from his check by Irwin as he sends out of his own.
- 38:57The point takes Moses to St. Louis and across the range of on a flat ground is why the hard drive with Villamur coming out the front cut down the angle Lewis able to keep up a rebound moves around.
- 39:07Pack Moses can play a pack of the left post for it.
- 39:10Now Harris traces down up the near side and throws it ahead.
- 39:13Stankowski up to center.
- 39:14Never goes over the slap on his wide right side of Smith. Nice for the after the long with Irwin they come together on the corner Irwin.
- 39:30For the pros for the right wing nice from ice from the holes up with the power to move on side that shoots out as he's checked by Harris and some back behind that Ranger go back to his head.
- 39:44He puts it out of his own a chase for the pocket center ice Lewis after the long with Irwin Irwin bats it in across the end of the line back pass Stankowski his shot deflects why the partner at the right part and he did not see it and it slides out of his own.
- 40:00He's checked checked away by Marshall for the stick of heading east of the range of line left wing feed for Howard his drive ends up reflecting high on the crowd to the left of Villamur and play is called with 49 seconds remaining in this first period and after Billy Smith has come up with some fine say the others are starting to take the blade to the Rangers getting into some good shots.
- 40:21Well as you mentioned I'm excited for the opposite side with brotherly out he's playing on the left side. He's having some trouble clearing he fell down once on a good play by retail saving him retail back checking well born and could chew on the draw right side of the
- 40:36line heicia colors locks in I've always like my life is loose and across the nation for him he's back at home but not for him to pick your cups together.
- 40:54Police are coming up.
- 40:56They move outside the.
- 41:00Ranger Blue Line.
- 41:03Bob born taking the initiative in there.
- 41:05in the opposite zone, the Pepas after the O'Kill zone.
- 41:08Oh, and Kachouk on the face now, half-bent of remaining first for him.
- 41:11And Fowlbank-Resner moves to the left defense to Marotte.
- 41:14Now Marotte out of the ranger zone, up to center.
- 41:16He winds and fires, gloves saved to the left, made by Smith.
- 41:20Leaves it behind the net for Hart.
- 41:21Hart checked by Kachouk, bangs it off the board,
- 41:24near giveaway to Faber, and Gilley's able to beat Faber
- 41:27out of the pocket, shoots it all the way down.
- 41:29Marotte back forward, 15 seconds left in the play.
- 41:31Marotte speaks it around the board for the finish
- 41:33after by Billy Harris, out to the court, Dennis Popman.
- 41:35Popman cuts left, throws in right side of Villamure.
- 41:38Harris is back, feeds it to McVinnie,
- 41:40driven it by Gresher, shoots it out of the zone.
- 41:42Time running down now in this first period.
- 41:44Dennis Popman to the right, and that's the end
- 41:48of this first period of play with the score.
- 41:50The New York Islanders won, and the New York Rangers nothing.
- 41:54Alka Seltzer brings you a message from the old one too.
- 41:57So you're in the carpool, and daredevil cherries at the wheel.
- 42:03Just close your eyes, try to forget those lumpy pancakes
- 42:07in your stomach.
- 42:08We're going to deal with the old one too.
- 42:10Alka Seltzer, let's get out of here.
- 42:16For aches and pains with upset stomach,
- 42:18use Alka Seltzer with specially buffered aspirin
- 42:20plus hand acid.
- 42:21Use only the most directed.
- 42:22It gives the old one too, the old one too.
- 42:26Now over with Sal Masina from Madison Square Garden
- 42:28in New York.
- 42:30And at the end of one, the Islanders lead it,
- 42:32one nothing on the ground, but Clark Gillies
- 42:34is second of the series, assisted by Bourne and Marshall.
- 42:39At the 16 minute mark, just barely
- 42:41found by Bruce Hiddon, the first pair of two
- 42:43urban of the Rangers for a roughing.
- 42:45At 7.46, Clark Gillies of the Islanders for interference
- 42:50at pair of 17.
- 42:51And the shots on Jordan, the first,
- 42:53Rangers 15 Islanders 8.
- 42:56Tremendous goaltending by Gillies Smith
- 42:59in that first period.
- 43:01Kept the Islanders in it after the Rangers
- 43:03were stopped on some excellent opportunities.
- 43:05And then Gillies was able to put it past Rillemure,
- 43:08putting it through his pants with an angle shot
- 43:10from about 30, 35 feet up from the right side.
- 43:13So one complete.
- 43:15And the Islanders lead it by the score of one nothing.
- 43:19We'll be back after this from Schaeferbier.
- 43:21["SHAPEHER BIRD"]
- 43:24Schaefer is the one beer to have.
- 43:29Now here's a word from the number one beer in New York.
- 43:35Hey, Schaefer is the one beer to have when you're
- 43:40having more than one.
- 43:43New York is full of landmarks.
- 43:45The Battery, Washington Square, Shea Stadium,
- 43:48and over on Kent Avenue in Brooklyn,
- 43:49there's another landmark.
- 43:51The Schaefer Brewery.
- 43:52Since 1842, there's always been a Schaefer Brewery in New York.
- 43:56Because New York has always liked Schaefer's way
- 43:59of tasting first beer good, beer after beer, year after year.
- 44:04Schaefer's a beer born and brewed right here in New York.
- 44:07It's New York's number one beer.
- 44:09One more time.
- 44:11Schaefer is the one beer to have when you're having more
- 44:19than one.
- 44:22The F&M Schaefer Brewery Company, New York, New York.
- 44:26On the scoreboard in the third period.
- 44:28And that surprise up in Boston, the Blackhawks leading
- 44:31the Brohens 5-3.
- 44:33Chicago 5, Boston 3, in the third.
- 44:36Later tonight, the winner, Adderley.
- 44:38That series kind of won it.
- 44:39Well, they have exchanged some death over time victories there.
- 44:43Pittsburgh swept St. Louis two games to nothing.
- 44:45So they are now in a whole pattern.
- 44:47NBA playoffs resume tomorrow, the Knicks playing at Houston.
- 44:51And their third and final game, you'll
- 44:53hear it on WNEW airtime at 1.20.
- 44:57And the ABA playoffs, the Nets at St. Louis,
- 44:59Natsui's tied at 1.1.
- 45:01Kentucky at Memphis tonight, but the Colts
- 45:03are looking to make it a four-zip wrap-up.
- 45:06And Denver at Utah, Denver leading it two games to one.
- 45:11We're between periods one and two.
- 45:14And the Anabas leading the Rangers by the score of 1-0
- 45:18on the first play-off by Clark Gillies.
- 45:21And after lengthy negotiations, Sal Messina,
- 45:25after going almost the entire season without having
- 45:29to talk to Tim Ryan, has finally allowed
- 45:33Tim to make an appearance here.
- 45:34And I'm glad Tim's here, because I
- 45:37don't think Tim will be behind it to, again,
- 45:38expand the complexities of what might happen on Sunday,
- 45:43not only for NBC, but for the National Hockey League
- 45:45in general, with the many possibilities that can occur.
- 45:49Sal?
- 45:50Thank you, Ma.
- 45:51I'm glad you brought that up.
- 45:53I feel like I'm invaded by NBC.
- 45:55I have Ma Valdez to my right, Tim Ryan to my left.
- 45:59Tim?
- 46:00What's going on Sunday?
- 46:02I'm almost sure you asked that, but I can tell you this.
- 46:05We'll be in Buffalo.
- 46:06The exciting sabers, the French Connection Line,
- 46:08and all of that stuff, and really not just
- 46:11to promote our telecast, obviously the sabers
- 46:13have had a great year.
- 46:15I think it's a good place to start our Stanley Cup playoff
- 46:19coverage.
- 46:19We'll be on every Sunday through the entire Stanley Cup
- 46:22playoffs.
- 46:23Buffalo will be playing one of four teams.
- 46:26And that all depends on what happens tonight, of course.
- 46:29You've got the Rangers or the Islanders,
- 46:32and you've got the Chicago Blackhawks in the picture.
- 46:36It looks like, if you could project anything at the moment
- 46:40with Pittsburgh's win last night,
- 46:41that they would play Montreal.
- 46:43But Toronto and Los Angeles are making it sticky.
- 46:47So we really can't say who Buffalo
- 46:50will be playing on Sunday.
- 46:51But it's one of those four teams.
- 46:53And I really don't have a preference.
- 46:56Somebody said earlier today, who would you like it to be?
- 46:58Well, I really don't think it matters all that much,
- 47:01because Vancouver, Chicago, the Islanders, and the Rangers,
- 47:05I think it all would provide an exciting game
- 47:07against the Buffalo Sabers.
- 47:09And really, we don't care who wins.
- 47:13I think we'll have a good hockey game Sunday.
- 47:15I think if Chicago wins that game,
- 47:16Chicago ends up playing Montreal,
- 47:18or Chicago loses that game.
- 47:20Montreal would play Vancouver.
- 47:23It isn't out of these Vancouver winning divisions
- 47:25would be number eight in the pool,
- 47:28should Chicago lose, then Toronto lose.
- 47:30Sal, it's just too complicated to go
- 47:32into all of those possibilities.
- 47:34And I'm sure the fans are giving up.
- 47:35They're all happy to wait until tomorrow
- 47:37to find out who plays who next.
- 47:39Now, before we get into it, I want
- 47:40to talk about this game.
- 47:41Well, before we go into how much of the Buffalo Sabers
- 47:43and that French Connection line, I
- 47:45think you have to give that hockey club, Punch-Em,
- 47:47like a tremendous amount of credit
- 47:49for getting other players aside from the French Connection
- 47:52line that really made that team a hockey club, with Don
- 47:54Luce, Craig Ramsey, the guys who do the work defensively
- 47:58night in and night out.
- 48:00No doubt about that.
- 48:01I have great respect for Punch-Em Lack.
- 48:03It goes back many years in his days with the Toronto Maple
- 48:06Leafs.
- 48:07And I always have believed him to be
- 48:08one of the brilliant hockey people in the game.
- 48:11And he said when he went to Buffalo
- 48:13that he'd be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup.
- 48:16And he included all of the teams that were already in.
- 48:18Well, he didn't quite make good on that promise.
- 48:20Philly beat him to it.
- 48:21But of course, the Sabers are younger.
- 48:23And they've got as good a shot at it.
- 48:25And they're going to get them in the NHL as this year.
- 48:28And it is because he has found those kinds of players
- 48:31you just described.
- 48:32They've got a rookie of the year candidate, Danny Gere.
- 48:35But it's the other guys you mentioned, like Ramsey and Luce.
- 48:38And look at that young defense that he's put together.
- 48:41People were concerned about the goal-tenning of Buffalo,
- 48:43including Punch-Em Lack.
- 48:45And yet he got through the season
- 48:46with a couple of goalies who were better than anybody
- 48:48expected.
- 48:49But they got great defensive help in those forwards
- 48:51come back and play both ends of the ice.
- 48:53And that's why they finished where they did.
- 48:55And you've got guys like Perot, Martin, and Robert
- 48:57who could give you that lead and then have these guys check
- 49:00for the rest of the hockey game when they were out
- 49:02or check the best line of the other team.
- 49:04So it's a great balance team, in my opinion.
- 49:06It's a great balance team.
- 49:08I do think that a series that certainly is possible
- 49:12is Buffalo against Montreal somewhere along the line,
- 49:15semifinals probably.
- 49:16And I would think that that has got
- 49:18to be one of the most exciting matchups that you could
- 49:21possibly put together in Stanley Cup play.
- 49:23I'm looking forward to it.
- 49:24It may not happen.
- 49:24Anything can happen.
- 49:25But I think that that would be an exciting series.
- 49:28You know, and oddity about that, Buffalo
- 49:30has taken nine of 10 points from Montreal this year
- 49:32in this season's series.
- 49:33So everybody was thinking the Canadians had their worst
- 49:36problems with New York teams.
- 49:37Actually, the Islanders, not counting the Rangers.
- 49:40I don't think the Rangers beat Montreal this year.
- 49:42But with the Islanders and Buffalo,
- 49:45and both of them play opposite to Buffalo.
- 49:46Where's the wide open team?
- 49:48I'd show them against the Rangers.
- 49:49The football scores or industrial league
- 49:52scores against the Rangers.
- 49:53Well, that's right.
- 49:54You know, unfortunately, it's cliche,
- 49:56but it is true because you look back at the records
- 49:58and you find it's true.
- 49:59Let the playoffs begin at the whole new season.
- 50:01And so I don't think that record the Sabres have against Montreal
- 50:04really matter very much.
- 50:06It could indicate only one thing, that they
- 50:08would build up a confidence that they
- 50:09could take into the playoffs to play their own game.
- 50:12In other words, without going in and trying
- 50:14to be cautious if they had split the series
- 50:16and gone over the bottom side of the series,
- 50:18they might go in and play a more cautious style
- 50:21than they normally play.
- 50:22I think the fact that they had that record against Montreal
- 50:25would send them in there with a feeling
- 50:27that let's just go with the same kind of thing
- 50:29that we did during the season.
- 50:31I don't want to tout that matchup,
- 50:32but it just strikes me as one that's
- 50:34possible in this very interesting Stanley Cup series
- 50:37and one that if it happens, I think it'll be very exciting.
- 50:40Going on tonight's game, there was a lot of speculation
- 50:43as to who the goaltender would be for the Islanders.
- 50:45I spoke with Don Wilson, a goaltender prior to the game,
- 50:48and he said he didn't think it was the goaltending that
- 50:51lost the game for the Islanders last run.
- 50:53I have to agree with him.
- 50:54I think it was the combination of the Rangers successfully
- 50:58scoring on their power plays and then playing so well
- 51:00defensively and checking the Islanders.
- 51:02But we were quite surprised.
- 51:05I don't know how else.
- 51:06I'm really surprised that Billy Smith started tonight.
- 51:09How about yourself, Tim?
- 51:10Well, I was surprised.
- 51:12I asked Al Abba right after the game in a press conference
- 51:15situation, which is not the best place to ask a coach,
- 51:19a losing coach, those kinds of questions.
- 51:21He was very emotionally overwrought about the way
- 51:23the game went last night.
- 51:24And he said, well, I won't decide until tomorrow morning.
- 51:27In other words, he played it safe.
- 51:28He may have already made up his mind.
- 51:29He may not.
- 51:30We'll never know.
- 51:31But I would have guessed that he would have settled on Resch
- 51:34again because Resch played so well here Tuesday night.
- 51:38And last night, I thought Resch played badly last night
- 51:41despite all of the other elements in the game.
- 51:43I thought he did not play well.
- 51:46But he is a very cool kind of personality.
- 51:48I saw him after the game.
- 51:49He kind of shrugged it off.
- 51:51And I would think it'd be funny to play tonight
- 51:53with Phil Smith as a much more emotionally involved kind
- 51:56of personality who took the defeat very hard.
- 51:59And while he wasn't responsible for it,
- 52:01the game was already lost.
- 52:02It was as though he somehow had been the reason they lost.
- 52:06And so I thought that Al would probably
- 52:08go with the more cool hand who had shown what he could do.
- 52:11So yes, I was surprised.
- 52:13But I'm not the coach.
- 52:14Al Arbor is a candidate for Coach of the Year honors.
- 52:17He's already won the Hockey News award for that category.
- 52:20And I guess that's why he's a coach.
- 52:22He made the right decision, at least from what we've seen
- 52:24so far, because Smith was the buddy in the first period.
- 52:26I think without Billy Smith, if Smith
- 52:28were having one of his games or if he
- 52:30was lacking the confidence, he made those two key saves early
- 52:33in a hockey game.
- 52:34Yes, he did.
- 52:35I think the best thing that can happen
- 52:36to a player like Billy Smith, and I think
- 52:39it's true of Eddie Jockman as well,
- 52:40is that they get a lot of pressure early.
- 52:42That they have tough chances, not just shots,
- 52:45but tough chances that challenge them
- 52:47in the first few minutes of the game.
- 52:48And if they make the save, they seem to rise,
- 52:52and they respond to it, and they play very sharply
- 52:54the rest of the game.
- 52:56Jim, have you seen this series so far?
- 52:58I know you've been out of all the poke games
- 52:59prior to tonight's game.
- 53:01What are your opinions on it?
- 53:02Well, I thought after the Islanders beat the Rangers
- 53:04in here on Tuesday that they would
- 53:05win the series last night.
- 53:07Not because they're a better team.
- 53:09I think the Rangers are a better team.
- 53:10But the fact that they got the win in here
- 53:12and were going home and had the confidence build up,
- 53:16the youngsters on that team knowing that they are now
- 53:18beating the Rangers twice in the garden, which I think
- 53:20they had had stage fright in here prior to those two wins.
- 53:23They came in here and just really kind of fell apart
- 53:25when they got on the ice.
- 53:27Those two wins would boost their confidence
- 53:29and playing at home where they had been tough all year
- 53:31against everybody, that they would win.
- 53:34After their loss last night, I had the feeling,
- 53:36and I still do, that the Rangers would win here tonight.
- 53:39I just thought that the more experienced team playing
- 53:42at home should win the third game in a best of three series.
- 53:47It's one-nothing for the Islanders,
- 53:48who played extremely well in the first period, I thought.
- 53:51But I thought both teams played well.
- 53:53And if I were to make a prediction right now,
- 53:56I still think the Rangers will win.
- 53:57But I think the Islanders' chances are better
- 53:59than I expected when the game started.
- 54:01That they are, and of course, Billy Smith
- 54:04rang with the confidence.
- 54:05But he made some good saves.
- 54:07The one save on the return on the breakaway
- 54:09was a super one, though, it was right there.
- 54:12Last night, a game that was filled with a lot of fighting.
- 54:17Reminded me of a Philadelphia Flyer game, especially
- 54:19a Philadelphia Flyer-New York Ranger game.
- 54:21But because we see the Philadelphia Flyer-New York
- 54:23Ranger games more often than others, tonight,
- 54:26nobody's actually thrown a punch.
- 54:28Teddy Irvin picked up a roughing penalty
- 54:30for just swinging his arm.
- 54:31Well, I think there are two reasons for that.
- 54:34One is that usually after a game which
- 54:36is ball-filled between two teams, which are not basically
- 54:39fighting teams, and both of these teams
- 54:41qualify as non-fighting teams overall,
- 54:45usually you get that out of the way,
- 54:47and you play hockey the next game.
- 54:48Even if it's not a series deciding game, which this is,
- 54:52that just adds another element to it.
- 54:54Secondly, I think that the refereeing tonight
- 54:57is better than it was last night.
- 54:59And Ron Wicks has refereed a lot of good games,
- 55:02and I don't want to single them out.
- 55:04There have been other referees who've had bad nights.
- 55:06They average about like the players and the teams do.
- 55:08But I thought that, unfortunately, he
- 55:11took command early last night in a way that was not
- 55:14conducive to a good playoff game between two teams like these.
- 55:17Tonight, Bruce Hood, I think, has handled it well.
- 55:19There were a couple of calls that he might have made,
- 55:21but he chose to let them go in the interest of the game,
- 55:24and they were not flagrant penalties.
- 55:26And I think he exercised good judgment.
- 55:28Consequently, both teams responded to the tone
- 55:31that he set, and we saw good, hard skating,
- 55:33hard checking hockey, and an exciting period of play.
- 55:36Tim Ryan, NBC Sportscaster, thanks very much
- 55:39for coming on, Tim.
- 55:40Sal, pleasure to be here.
- 55:41Wallace?
- 55:42OK.
- 55:43How does that feel?
- 55:44Hey, he sounds like he knows what he's doing.
- 55:46He should be doing hockey, so.
- 55:49For Tim, we have a Sony AM FM Digimatic Clock radio.
- 55:53You know, Frank Field, incidentally, is here.
- 55:55No kidding.
- 55:57Sir, have you got to take care of this?
- 55:58He's not with us.
- 55:59He actually purchased seats.
- 56:02It was given seats.
- 56:03Impossible.
- 56:04Was he?
- 56:04He must have been given seats.
- 56:05But they are in the mezzanine section.
- 56:08He didn't realize that the color of the seats
- 56:11determines where you sit.
- 56:12They are not one of the better garden locations.
- 56:16He likes blue.
- 56:17And he wants to be in the clouds, Marv.
- 56:19He's checking the weather.
- 56:20Good to him.
- 56:21And he asked me if they're good seats.
- 56:23And I said, sir.
- 56:25And I said, yes, sir.
- 56:27They're great seats.
- 56:28He doesn't realize it.
- 56:29I said, yeah, we have to have a bench.
- 56:31But he is upstairs somewhere.
- 56:32He does not realize that.
- 56:34At any rate, great, Marv.
- 56:37For Tim, we have a Sony AM FM Digimatic Clock radio
- 56:40with touch-back controls, automatic sleep time.
- 56:42And the Sony also has illuminated easy-to-read clock
- 56:45numerals and a big three-inch speaker.
- 56:48It's not just a radio.
- 56:50It's a Sony.
- 56:51We'll be back with period number two.
- 56:53After this, we'll manufacture a sound over truss.
- 56:56One of life's embarrassing events can happen anywhere,
- 56:59even at the corner of Butcher Street.
- 57:01All right, who's next?
- 57:02That last steak.
- 57:04Go ahead, Harriet.
- 57:05Yes, Mrs. Lane.
- 57:06That last steak, Henry, was a little rubbery.
- 57:08Yeah, well, so was your check.
- 57:10It bounced.
- 57:11Oh, I must have figured wrong in my checkbook.
- 57:14What's wrong, Harriet?
- 57:15Is Brett out of work or something?
- 57:16Marty and I have always learned here.
- 57:18This is terrible.
- 57:19Beth, we have a kid.
- 57:20Manufacturers' handover can take one of life's embarrassing
- 57:23moments out of your life with worry-free overgraph checking.
- 57:27You've probably done it.
- 57:28We all have.
- 57:29You make a small error in your checkbook,
- 57:31and the next thing you know, your paper check is to me a rubber.
- 57:35But with this system, you can write checks bigger
- 57:37than your balance, and they won't bounce.
- 57:39You can make your checking account worry-free
- 57:41by applying for command credit.
- 57:43You can get something else, too, an easy checking guide.
- 57:46It lets you cash your manufacturer's handover personal
- 57:49check at over 170 branches.
- 57:51Manufacturers' handover.
- 57:53It's banking the way you want it to be.
- 57:55Remember FDIC.
- 57:58We're set for the face-off.
- 58:01To get things going here in the second period,
- 58:03it is Joe Villamire.
- 58:04QR right, Billy Smith QR left.
- 58:06Rangers cramming the anode.
- 58:07There's one nothing on the face.
- 58:09Rangers control.
- 58:10Ron Harris checked by Drew Curran, and Curran takes it away.
- 58:15A hit for West Ball, he's to the range of line.
- 58:17Cross-ice Parisi.
- 58:19Back pass now for Lewis.
- 58:20A shot served, made.
- 58:22It was loose.
- 58:22Backhand about Parisi is blocked.
- 58:25Buck ends up at the near corner in his pin with Hood.
- 58:29And Harris coming to here, and Lewis sent down the floor.
- 58:34What a weird play that was, too.
- 58:35The puck was loose.
- 58:37JP Parisi had a backhand shot and had the entire net hit.
- 58:40Villamire in the arm, and Ron Harris is skating by the net.
- 58:44Checked Bruce Hood into the boards.
- 58:46Mountain amended up in the corner,
- 58:48and the puck just wound around underneath the two of them.
- 58:50Bruce Hood had him blow the whistle.
- 58:52He's sitting there with his back up against the boards.
- 58:55And the left-behind Villamire was also knocked off its hinges.
- 59:01Wild sequence, and it results in a face-off
- 59:03to the right of the ranger net controlled by the Rangers.
- 59:06Joe Vast starts up, has Vickers left,
- 59:08Rattelle right, a leap for Rattelle across the out of the line.
- 59:11Takes a stiff check from Lewis.
- 59:13Lewis comes up with a loose puck,
- 59:14bothered from behind by Joe Vast, loses to Joe Vast.
- 59:17He banks at the board.
- 59:20Puck is knocked around by Drew and a clear down of his arm.
- 59:23Taken by Parisi at center and across the ranger line.
- 59:26Back pass now for Drew, and Drew in circles to the corner.
- 59:29Goes in with an angle shot that is blocked by Vickers.
- 59:31Vickers up to center with Joe Vast at ground.
- 59:34Stick handles to the out of the line,
- 59:35but Joe Vast ahead of the plate.
- 59:38And offside will bring it back.
- 59:39Face-off coming up back.
- 59:41That's the Islander through-ramp.
- 59:43Perfect minimum play, second period,
- 59:46and the Islanders lead one more thing on the goal by Gillies
- 59:49from Bourne and Marshall at the 16-minute mark.
- 59:53And Robert, the score, 1-0.
- 59:54The next goal, you always say the next goal,
- 59:56the Islanders let down 2-0.
- 59:58The next goal in that game on Tuesday night was important.
- 1:00:00The Islanders got it, and they won the hockey game.
- 1:00:02Could be the same tonight.
- 1:00:04Off the face-off, Islanders control.
- 1:00:06Bourne back pass for Dennis Poppins, shoots it ahead.
- 1:00:10A battle at the near side, Sanderson works it free.
- 1:00:12Muscles is gray across the end of the line, but loses control.
- 1:00:16Billy Harris takes it back.
- 1:00:17Check for the hop on the ramp, but he's emmettably Bourne
- 1:00:19in across the range of line.
- 1:00:20Cross-ice now back out of that Gillies.
- 1:00:22Booze, bad.
- 1:00:22Center back, born.
- 1:00:23His shot was off the mark.
- 1:00:25Couture takes the rebound.
- 1:00:26Can't clear, Harris keeps up.
- 1:00:28Booze it off the Bulls at the near side.
- 1:00:30Dennis Poppins loses a stick as Sanderson
- 1:00:32shuts it out of the zone.
- 1:00:33Picked up that center though by Billy Harris.
- 1:00:36Breaks around the ramp at the range of line.
- 1:00:38Comes it in, left side of Villamur.
- 1:00:40Harris hit from behind by Couture.
- 1:00:42They come together.
- 1:00:43The puck is loose at the ranger goal line.
- 1:00:45Backboard, Cresner loses on a stick shot.
- 1:00:47Harris takes, he loses control.
- 1:00:49Then regains, doing a run-of-digging.
- 1:00:51He's knocked down the play by Cresner.
- 1:00:53Islanders looking for a penalty, nothing called.
- 1:00:55Puck still loose behind that ranger goal line,
- 1:00:58and it's finally picked up by Couture.
- 1:01:00Couture got on the ranger's end.
- 1:01:01It's the center.
- 1:01:02Puts on the breaks, throws it off the boards,
- 1:01:04but it's behind Sanderson, and Dennis Poppins retrieves.
- 1:01:07A link for Saint-Laurent across the ranger line.
- 1:01:09Breaks for the corner of the line.
- 1:01:10They're rosing off the side of the net.
- 1:01:12Chased down behind that ground back Cresner.
- 1:01:14Whips it around the board.
- 1:01:16Tenet to Febber, knocked away by Hart.
- 1:01:17Slaps it right back behind the ranger goal line.
- 1:01:19Cresner winds it around again.
- 1:01:21It is picked up now by Couture at center.
- 1:01:24Couture across the red line.
- 1:01:25He loots Nicebrook.
- 1:01:27He's up across the end of the blue line.
- 1:01:29Back past Sanderson.
- 1:01:30Roles it in front of the net.
- 1:01:31Scooped up by the goaltender, Smith, and he holds on.
- 1:01:34Let's pause right here for a station identification.
- 1:01:37This is WNEW, New York.
- 1:01:39My name is Ted Brown, a ranger fan,
- 1:01:41and I'm on every afternoon at 4 p.m.
- 1:01:44Join me.
- 1:01:44We'll crease your blue line good.
- 1:01:47Two and a half minutes gone by.
- 1:01:48Second period.
- 1:01:50Third and finale of this best two out of three
- 1:01:52with the Rangers and the Anadilists
- 1:01:54nodded at one and one.
- 1:01:55Anadilists coming here Tuesday night, three-two.
- 1:01:58Now the Rangers, winning last night at the Coliseum,
- 1:02:02eight to three.
- 1:02:03Surrey's even at one and one.
- 1:02:05A Stankowski goes against St. Laurent.
- 1:02:07Faisal, left side, and Billy Smith.
- 1:02:11And Armstrong drops it and sent back to the point.
- 1:02:13Butler shoots ahead, deflects wide.
- 1:02:15On the rebound, chase by on behalf of Edmai Lewis,
- 1:02:18winds it around the board.
- 1:02:19Nicebrook and Park come together and divide to freeze.
- 1:02:22Safreya's fault, and again a face-off.
- 1:02:24Deep in islander S.
- 1:02:26Brad Parr coming in to keep the puck in the zone.
- 1:02:29Jerry Hart doing the same thing in the Ranger end.
- 1:02:32And when your wingers are coming back,
- 1:02:34what's Stankowski and Butler backing up
- 1:02:35on the other side of the ice?
- 1:02:36The defenseman is able to do that.
- 1:02:38On the face, controlled by Burt Marshall of the Islanders,
- 1:02:41moves back behind that ring.
- 1:02:42The Anadilist, loses control.
- 1:02:44Irvin takes it away.
- 1:02:46It's hit off the board.
- 1:02:47It's intended for Park.
- 1:02:48Knocked away and picked off by St. Laurent.
- 1:02:49Two on one, Howard left.
- 1:02:51They break in on Howard's cross.
- 1:02:52Break them out by St. Laurent.
- 1:02:53He hit the post.
- 1:02:54He hit the right post.
- 1:02:55Butler now, there's an out of the zone.
- 1:02:57Irvin takes it at center.
- 1:02:59Returns to Butler, breaks it across the Anadil line.
- 1:03:01It's trickles it in front for Stankowski.
- 1:03:03Beaten to it by Meisbrim.
- 1:03:04And Meisbrim breaks up ice.
- 1:03:06Meisbrim to center, shoots in.
- 1:03:08Left side of Villeneuve, sticks it away from Howard,
- 1:03:10cutting in from the near boards.
- 1:03:12And it's taken by Stankowski.
- 1:03:13A hit for Irvin and center.
- 1:03:15As Butler right flies to the end of the line.
- 1:03:17Back past Butler, he's out deep.
- 1:03:18He winds, he fires.
- 1:03:19Sticks save and a puny made by Smith.
- 1:03:22And a hard drive right on by Jerry Butler.
- 1:03:25Meisbrim right back.
- 1:03:26He's to the Ranger line.
- 1:03:27Back past Booner.
- 1:03:27Third for Meisbrim.
- 1:03:28Sends in front for Howard.
- 1:03:29Knocked aside by Harris.
- 1:03:31Hooked loose behind the Ranger goal line.
- 1:03:33Howard and Harris stick forward.
- 1:03:35Howard jumps hard for the penalty upcoming.
- 1:03:37Penalty against Howard.
- 1:03:39A hold is called.
- 1:03:41And the Rangers will have the man advantage.
- 1:03:43Rangers very fortunate just a moment ago.
- 1:03:46And that two on one side with St. Laurent.
- 1:03:49And Howard can again.
- 1:03:50St. Laurent beat Villeneuve,
- 1:03:52but he hit the right post square on.
- 1:03:55Just commented on how the defensemen were coming up.
- 1:03:57But that time on that play,
- 1:03:59Brad Poff made the move in the offensive zone
- 1:04:02and was trapped when the Allarders came in two on one.
- 1:04:05A bad penalty for Jerry Howard to take right now.
- 1:04:08The Rangers were getting careless in their end.
- 1:04:10Were not making good plays.
- 1:04:12And he a foolish penalty in the offensive zone
- 1:04:14as Harris is breaking out on the track.
- 1:04:16A hold on Howard at three, three, six.
- 1:04:19Rangers down one nothing on the first period goal
- 1:04:22by Clark Gillies, assisted by Bob Thorn and Burt Marshall.
- 1:04:26Rangers have the man advantage for the second time
- 1:04:29this evening.
- 1:04:30Ratel up front with Faburn, right pickers left.
- 1:04:33Joubert and Clark are at the points.
- 1:04:36West ball and Ratel on the space off.
- 1:04:38Controlled by the Rangers in the road end.
- 1:04:40Joubert watched by Henning, slides it ahead for Ratel.
- 1:04:43Ratel up to center.
- 1:04:44Right wing feet, Faburn across the out of the line.
- 1:04:46Hit from behind, gets it off to Ratel,
- 1:04:48crickles it in front.
- 1:04:49Pickers back off the play as West ball breaks it up.
- 1:04:52West ball now shoots it to center.
- 1:04:53Faburn takes there.
- 1:04:55Back pass to Joubert, he's at the Ranger line.
- 1:04:58Back the other way it goes to Park.
- 1:04:59Park flips it ahead for Vickers.
- 1:05:01Now Vickers up to the red line ahead with Talon
- 1:05:04across the out of the blue line.
- 1:05:05A lead for Faburn on the right forward.
- 1:05:07Moves into the slap, it is blocked by Hart.
- 1:05:09Faburn comes up with a buck once again.
- 1:05:11Cross-ice to Park, he lines it up, he shoots.
- 1:05:13Reflects wide, Vickers able to come up with it.
- 1:05:16In the corner, Vickers sets up.
- 1:05:17Little one, it goes to Park.
- 1:05:19Park back to Vickers in the corner.
- 1:05:21Vickers in front.
- 1:05:22And it will tell, he shoots, save it, a beauty by Smith.
- 1:05:25On the rebound, Faburn looks to keep in, cannot.
- 1:05:28Knocked away by West ball.
- 1:05:29West ball to center, puts on the brakes,
- 1:05:31throws it back the other way to Hart,
- 1:05:33at the out of the line.
- 1:05:34Cross-ice for Dennis Paffman at the out of the line,
- 1:05:35he's not killing the catch,
- 1:05:36Paffman shoots it ahead to center to West ball.
- 1:05:39He sends for the Ranger line, Park back forward now.
- 1:05:4155 seconds remaining, and an out of the penalty
- 1:05:43as the Rangers regroup the ball,
- 1:05:44Blake Joubert or a kill, at the out of the line.
- 1:05:46Back pass Vickers, not expecting, Park takes it instead.
- 1:05:49Off it goes to the far corner to Faburn.
- 1:05:51Back it goes for the right back, but Joubert,
- 1:05:53cross-ice, Park has the wide open shot,
- 1:05:55makes it in, close and stuff to Vickers.
- 1:05:57He's battled up, swings it off the boards at the far side.
- 1:05:59Faburn comes together with Penny, West ball breaks it up,
- 1:06:02takes it loose, tries to clear, cannot,
- 1:06:04kept a bunch of it at the point.
- 1:06:05Cross-ice, Park lines it up, throws it close to Vickers,
- 1:06:07off the escape, shot on goal for the Coastal,
- 1:06:09another fan after him, bad as heck.
- 1:06:11Vickers and Hart having words now,
- 1:06:13something you never see John Witton doing in hard,
- 1:06:17as he was clobbered in front of it by Jerry Hart,
- 1:06:20but Vickers tried to race to his rescue along with Faburn,
- 1:06:25but I've been snapped in, and now things have settled down.
- 1:06:31The Retelleges gave Hart another shot,
- 1:06:32Hart thought it was Joubert, he turned around
- 1:06:34and pushed Joubert on the play.
- 1:06:37Jerry Hart coming in with a stick raise
- 1:06:39to clear the front of the net.
- 1:06:40Mark Reutter to that, Billy Smith made a super save,
- 1:06:43a pass from Park to Vickers, to the tail in front,
- 1:06:47and Billy Smith somehow got his pad on it,
- 1:06:50a drop underneath him and he was able to cover that,
- 1:06:53and Hart making the good play by clearing the front of the net,
- 1:06:56preventing the Rangers from picking up that loose puck
- 1:06:58that was laying in the grease.
- 1:07:00Our first serious clear-up of the evening,
- 1:07:03following last night's record of 50 penalties called,
- 1:07:07establishing a new national hockey league record
- 1:07:10for most penalties for both teams in a Stanley Cup game.
- 1:07:14Previous record of 43-7 last season's
- 1:07:16title round series between the Flyers and the Bruins,
- 1:07:19no penalties being called right here, yes they are.
- 1:07:24Now the penalties are being called,
- 1:07:25Billy Faber is setting off,
- 1:07:32and Dennis Putman is hit with a charm.
- 1:07:36Well, the principals are nothing in the penalties.
- 1:07:43And Faber, also hit with a primitive penalty
- 1:07:48managing a foul away from Hart,
- 1:07:50Lieutenant Joubert, who are actually in Peru,
- 1:07:53remain on ice.
- 1:07:55Ratel stays out there, now Hart goes back to the bench,
- 1:07:59and we got a face-off coming up,
- 1:08:01it's a four on three, Rangers are skating advantage right now.
- 1:08:04Rangers down, one nothing, they control the face,
- 1:08:07Park at the right part, Park comes in,
- 1:08:09clicks over to Joubert at the far side,
- 1:08:11backs up, throws in post for the 10 of a track,
- 1:08:14but Joubert lights it up, he's shot, blocked by Lewis,
- 1:08:16and it's cleared out of the way down,
- 1:08:18golf coming from the ice by Westboro.
- 1:08:2210 seconds remaining to that Ranger,
- 1:08:23four on three as Park goes to center.
- 1:08:26Park slides it ahead for Joubert
- 1:08:28at the outer of the blue line,
- 1:08:29Joubert cuts to the far side, now looks to set up,
- 1:08:32throws in for a pick as a shot wide,
- 1:08:34now here is Howard back on, I feel it,
- 1:08:36and Joubert comes together at the far side,
- 1:08:38and Lewis having to clear it out of his own.
- 1:08:40So now both clubs down a man,
- 1:08:42with a minute 20 remaining on the penalties
- 1:08:45to Dennis Puffman and Billy Fairburn,
- 1:08:47and with both clubs even,
- 1:08:49the Islanders are called for icing the puck
- 1:08:51as they start up the length of the ice.
- 1:08:52So they bring it back for a face off
- 1:08:54to the left side of Billy Smith.
- 1:08:56Again, the Island defenseman coming up with a big save
- 1:08:59on Joubert's shot, Dave Lewis just sprawling
- 1:09:02and made an excellent save,
- 1:09:03preventing the puck from going in,
- 1:09:05Joubert off on the open point,
- 1:09:07decided to try and drive it through
- 1:09:09with Rattelle breaking from the right in on Smith,
- 1:09:11and Vickers in his usual spot on the left side.
- 1:09:16Rangers now go with Sanderson and Rueber for a punt for one,
- 1:09:19and Greshner are back,
- 1:09:21Bourne and Billy Harris up front for the Islanders,
- 1:09:24Marshall and Lewis on the back line.
- 1:09:28It'll be Sanderson against Bourne on this draw,
- 1:09:3114.08 left, second period, Rangers trail one nothing,
- 1:09:35and the face off, Lewis sends in for Lewis,
- 1:09:38intercepts ahead for Harris,
- 1:09:40Billy Harris to the Islanders, circles it as all that,
- 1:09:42gives off to Marshall,
- 1:09:43and then a return to Harris who breaks to center.
- 1:09:46Stopped by Sanderson as Smith checks it away,
- 1:09:48now Derrick pulls the string on Bourne,
- 1:09:50a back pass for Greshner.
- 1:09:52Greshner up to the out of the line,
- 1:09:53he stick handles in, he cuts to his left side,
- 1:09:56Master Roller cross ice knocked away
- 1:09:58by the stick of Marshall.
- 1:09:59Greshner tangled up, Marshall knocks it out to center,
- 1:10:02pick up by Harris, leading up two on one
- 1:10:04across the range of Albert Bourne,
- 1:10:06pass to Flickett in front, but it's broken up by Marrung,
- 1:10:08now penalty is called, a penalty upcoming on the Rangers.
- 1:10:13A tripping penalty indicated on one Greshner.
- 1:10:18Greshner got himself in difficulty,
- 1:10:20back up the Ranger blue line,
- 1:10:23and now the Islanders will have the man advantage,
- 1:10:25it'll be a four on three skating advantage for 38 seconds.
- 1:10:29Billy Harris morphing the play,
- 1:10:31he's prevented Greshner from making that play
- 1:10:33in the Islander zone, kept pushing the pump towards him,
- 1:10:37by Greshner, Greshner pulled him down,
- 1:10:39but Harris was able to get up again
- 1:10:40and skate in for the two on one,
- 1:10:42and what a play Gilles Marotte made,
- 1:10:44with Grewin grouping down to center.
- 1:10:46Tripping on Greshner at 6-3-0,
- 1:10:50face off coming up left side of the Ranger up.
- 1:10:55Rangers now go with Sanderson, Marrung, and Harris.
- 1:11:02Greshner and Bourne in the penalty box,
- 1:11:05and the Islanders go to Grewin,
- 1:11:07but we see Billy Harris, and Pippen stepping on,
- 1:11:12and Bob, the power play opportunities,
- 1:11:15the Rangers, unsuccessful in two,
- 1:11:17this is the Islander's second attempt.
- 1:11:20Here's the face now, left side of the Ranger,
- 1:11:22that controlled by the Islanders, Harris to the point,
- 1:11:24but it's intercepted by Sanderson,
- 1:11:26post to center with a drop for Harris,
- 1:11:27Harris breaks in across the end of the line,
- 1:11:29a pass for Sanderson, broken up by Harris,
- 1:11:31leads it two on one, Harris around Marrung,
- 1:11:34and we got a whistle for an offside,
- 1:11:36with Parisi just in ahead of the play.
- 1:11:39Derek Sanderson making the behind the back pass,
- 1:11:41it didn't pay off, Ronnie Harris is a little bit
- 1:11:44further away than Sanderson anticipated,
- 1:11:47and the Islanders going in on that play,
- 1:11:48Parisi going offside, but Gilles Marotte
- 1:11:51forcing Harris to slow up as he hit the blue line,
- 1:11:53by just sprawling in Harris' way.
- 1:11:55A minute 46 remaining to that Islander advantage,
- 1:11:5924 seconds to a three-way advantage,
- 1:12:03because when Faber and Dennis Popman return,
- 1:12:06it'll be a five on four skating advantage
- 1:12:09for the Islanders, face off now between
- 1:12:11Willie Harris and Derek Sanderson at the Ranger line,
- 1:12:13it's sent to the far boards of Ranger,
- 1:12:14Parisi chasing it all up hard,
- 1:12:16Mark has the back pass behind his goal line,
- 1:12:18Marotte there, comes together with Harris,
- 1:12:20all right able to wind it around,
- 1:12:21pass to Drew at the point, and all the way down.
- 1:12:24Willie Smith stops it up the side of the net,
- 1:12:26and leads for John Popman, now Popman starts up,
- 1:12:29Popman out of the zone, east to center,
- 1:12:31he's up across the Ranger line, a drop on Parisi,
- 1:12:34back for Popman at the point, he lights it up,
- 1:12:36cross-sides Drew, and he lights it up,
- 1:12:38a slap shot is deflected high in the air,
- 1:12:40and up into the crowd to the right side,
- 1:12:42how about the Ranger now?
- 1:12:43All right now, Villamur complaining to Bruce Hood,
- 1:12:47Billy Harris deflected the puck into the crowd,
- 1:12:49he's making sure Hood did not know
- 1:12:51who deflected into the crowd,
- 1:12:52Villamur talking to Hood about it,
- 1:12:54Hood consults his linesman,
- 1:12:55and the face off's coming up, and that was it.
- 1:12:58And now the clock, I believe, did not start right at the whistle,
- 1:13:02and they're adjusting it right now,
- 1:13:04Villamur was slamming a sniper, a play was going on,
- 1:13:07and that's exactly what happened,
- 1:13:09they're adjusting that clock now,
- 1:13:11to read down the seconds that they lost,
- 1:13:13they do not only use the clock that's up on the board,
- 1:13:16the timekeeper also keeps a stopwatch,
- 1:13:19we have Philadelphia timekeepers here tonight,
- 1:13:21Philadelphia minor officials,
- 1:13:22so they know what to drop the time down to,
- 1:13:25and they're dropping it down to 12.51 remaining,
- 1:13:27and a minute and 21 remaining on Ron Greshner's penalty,
- 1:13:32that was about 10 seconds that had elapsed
- 1:13:34before the clock was started.
- 1:13:37In other words, they keep a stopwatch as a spam,
- 1:13:40in case something like that should happen,
- 1:13:42and that's how they knew where to go,
- 1:13:44to what point on the clock to go to
- 1:13:46during this timeout right now.
- 1:13:49You work as a minor official over the years, right,
- 1:13:51or you handle the clock, don't you?
- 1:13:52I handle it on occasion,
- 1:13:54I would use mostly as a penalty timekeeper, a statistician.
- 1:13:57All right, here's the face outside the ranger line,
- 1:13:59Bruin and Sanderson on the draw,
- 1:14:01the penalties on Fairburn and Dennis Potman have expired,
- 1:14:04a minute and 20 remaining on that Greshner penalty,
- 1:14:06Rangers have the man down,
- 1:14:08on the face off, Potman shoots in,
- 1:14:10that's Dennis flipping right side of the,
- 1:14:12good with your clock out,
- 1:14:13good roll with Parisi,
- 1:14:14pass, slides it around the board,
- 1:14:15but Dennis, Dennis Harris cuts it off at the near side,
- 1:14:18Harris circles, now cuts to the near corner,
- 1:14:20back pass for Parisi at the ranger goal line,
- 1:14:23he looks to set up,
- 1:14:25throws it to the side of the net for Harris,
- 1:14:26Harris back out to John Potman,
- 1:14:28watched by Sanderson,
- 1:14:30rolls it cross-ice to Dennis Potman,
- 1:14:32shoots it in the corner to Bruin,
- 1:14:33Bruin looking to set up,
- 1:14:34very carefully back to the court,
- 1:14:36to Dennis Potman,
- 1:14:37throws to the side of the net,
- 1:14:38and Parisi back out for Bruin,
- 1:14:39he shoots at it wide,
- 1:14:41it rolls around the boards for John Potman
- 1:14:43at the right point,
- 1:14:43watched by Sanderson,
- 1:14:45out of the setting up,
- 1:14:45a very deliberate fashion setting up,
- 1:14:47well cross-ice Dennis Potman,
- 1:14:48shot blocked, and it's rolled out of the zone.
- 1:14:51Potman chases it down,
- 1:14:52half minute remaining on that ranger penalty,
- 1:14:54a pass ahead for Billy Harris,
- 1:14:55makes a shove from Faber when he slammed to the board,
- 1:14:58John Potman retreats and sends in,
- 1:15:00right side of Villamur makes the stick stop,
- 1:15:02steers it onto the stick of Sanderson,
- 1:15:04tries to flick it around the boards,
- 1:15:05but it ends up deflecting to the crowd at the near side,
- 1:15:09and players call,
- 1:15:1020 seconds remaining on that Greshner penalty,
- 1:15:13rangers down 1-0,
- 1:15:14the islander goal in the first,
- 1:15:16at the 16 minute mark,
- 1:15:17scored by Clark Gillies from Bob Bourne,
- 1:15:20and Bert Marko,
- 1:15:21a jump from the angle from 30-35 feet out
- 1:15:24for the right side of Villamur,
- 1:15:25that beat him between his legs,
- 1:15:27beat him between the fans,
- 1:15:28face off coming up now,
- 1:15:29left side of Villamur,
- 1:15:31that'll be Sanderson on this face off,
- 1:15:33against Saint Laurent,
- 1:15:3511-5,
- 1:15:36remaining in the second period.
- 1:15:40Now the linesman,
- 1:15:41Schaffer, another leans in,
- 1:15:42gets up to drop that puck,
- 1:15:44with Saint Laurent leading in now,
- 1:15:47now it's dropped, sent to the near corner,
- 1:15:49and Ranger Rice,
- 1:15:49parked there, he's hemmed in,
- 1:15:51loses control,
- 1:15:52Nicecomb stick kicks it away,
- 1:15:54Villamur comes out to wind it around,
- 1:15:56Faber looks to face down on Potman,
- 1:15:58they both over-scape,
- 1:15:59and Potman recovers out for the slot,
- 1:16:00Nicecomb to the right point,
- 1:16:01John Potman, he lines it up,
- 1:16:02he shoots, scores!
- 1:16:04It is deflected in,
- 1:16:06from in front of the net,
- 1:16:07by Dennis Potman,
- 1:16:09and the islanders,
- 1:16:10with the power play goal,
- 1:16:11have jumped in front,
- 1:16:13by the score of 2-0,
- 1:16:15there are only four seconds remaining,
- 1:16:17on that Greshner penalty.
- 1:16:18Dennis Potman doing the job,
- 1:16:20setting up the play,
- 1:16:21going in front of the net,
- 1:16:22deflect the shot in by,
- 1:16:24from, from brother John Potman,
- 1:16:27Potman shot low,
- 1:16:28right in on the center of the net,
- 1:16:29and deflected it,
- 1:16:30Potman eluding both Billy Faber,
- 1:16:32both the other one,
- 1:16:33eluding both Billy Faber,
- 1:16:34and Ron Harris on the far board.
- 1:16:36Here's the face off at center,
- 1:16:37Baratt takes Smith to Ranger Line,
- 1:16:39crosses Pichter,
- 1:16:40and leads for Butler,
- 1:16:41over-scapes,
- 1:16:42Howard knocks it back,
- 1:16:43the other one,
- 1:16:44Stankowski keeps in,
- 1:16:45drops it left side of Smith,
- 1:16:46Lewis winds it around the board,
- 1:16:48Nicecomb takes there,
- 1:16:50looks to move around Urban and Dug,
- 1:16:51shoots it out to center,
- 1:16:52plays his own pass,
- 1:16:53he's up to the Ranger Line,
- 1:16:55breaks to his right,
- 1:16:56loses control,
- 1:16:57Baratt whips it around,
- 1:16:58Whitmore and Horne,
- 1:16:59come together at the far side,
- 1:17:01a check by Stankowski on Howard knocked away,
- 1:17:03it is picked up by Urban,
- 1:17:05he loses control,
- 1:17:06comes to the board,
- 1:17:06shift that beast to his right,
- 1:17:08on the rebound,
- 1:17:09Rangers fail to clear the,
- 1:17:10Baratt gets to it,
- 1:17:11and shoots it out of the zone.
- 1:17:12Urban in pursuit along with Lewis,
- 1:17:14and the others,
- 1:17:15Lewis gets to it,
- 1:17:16a hit to Nicecomb,
- 1:17:16Nicecomb over across the Ranger Line,
- 1:17:18here's his shot,
- 1:17:19went by Baratt,
- 1:17:20and he holds on.
- 1:17:21Play is called,
- 1:17:22we're gonna face off now,
- 1:17:23deep in Ranger ice,
- 1:17:25and right now,
- 1:17:26with 10 minutes and 50 seconds
- 1:17:28remaining on the second period,
- 1:17:29the Islanders cloud 2-0,

- 1:17:32from other town,
- 1:17:34Potvin,
- 1:17:35who took the shot,
- 1:17:36and Brad Nicecomb,
- 1:17:37at 8.26,
- 1:17:38and right now the Rangers are playing
- 1:17:40for their 1974-75,
- 1:17:43Lions trailing 2-0.
- 1:17:45And it's gonna be a long road,
- 1:17:46Billy Smith has been playing
- 1:17:48super and paid 40 New York Islanders,
- 1:17:51and the Islanders are
- 1:17:52the inspired hockey club,
- 1:17:53they have the 2-0 lead,
- 1:17:55they've beaten the Rangers

- 1:18:36a battle for it there,
- 1:18:37it is still loose,
- 1:18:38Marisi and Gilbert digging behind
- 1:18:40that out of the net,
- 1:18:41Rickers races for it,

- 1:18:57throws it in,
- 1:18:58Vickers cases down in the corner,
- 1:18:59Vickers looks to get it out to Park,
- 1:19:01broken up by Westfall,
- 1:19:02and he shoots it out of the zone.
- 1:19:03Ron Harris back for it now,
- 1:19:05Harris holds it away from Marisi,
- 1:19:07cross-hides pass for Gilbert,
- 1:19:09leads Rotel at center,
- 1:19:10Rotel in across the outer line,
- 1:19:12drop pass for Vickers,
- 1:19:13who's out deep back for Rotel,
- 1:19:14and close he goes into the shot,
- 1:19:15save made off the right pass of Smith,
- 1:19:17loose behind the goal on the rebound,
- 1:19:19Lewis and Gilbert combined to freeze it,
- 1:19:21and play a spell.
- 1:19:23What a game from Billy Smith.
- 1:19:25Soap for Soap,
- 1:19:26a save, a run,
- 1:19:27and it's a puck hitting him in the arm,
- 1:19:29bouncing way up in the air,
- 1:19:31behind the cage,
- 1:19:32Vickers throwing it back out to Rotel,
- 1:19:34Rotel shooting and
- 1:19:36going to the other side off Smith's pad,
- 1:19:37and Smith just slid across
- 1:19:39to stop a shot by Gilbert,
- 1:19:40the Rangers come right back,
- 1:19:42Rotel a close in shot,
- 1:19:44Smith is there,
- 1:19:44what a game.
- 1:19:469.37,
- 1:19:47remaining second period,
- 1:19:48Islanders two,
- 1:19:50Rangers nothing.
- 1:19:51It's the third and final game
- 1:19:53of this past two and three,
- 1:19:55and this Ranger crowd here at the guard
- 1:19:57now coming alive,
- 1:19:58looking to urge the Rangers on.
- 1:20:02Kukuk steps on with Polis left,
- 1:20:04Fabon right,
- 1:20:05a run,
- 1:20:06and Brechner are back,
- 1:20:07born and Kukuk on this face off.
- 1:20:11It's to the right side of Billy Smith,
- 1:20:13they both jump the gun,
- 1:20:15and Ray Schepanetto says,
- 1:20:16let's get someone else.
- 1:20:18Apparently he's satisfied with the two,
- 1:20:20no he's not,
- 1:20:21he wants a two new face off man,
- 1:20:23and Polis and Billy Harris step in now,
- 1:20:25punch drop,
- 1:20:26and we,
- 1:20:27and a whistle once again.
- 1:20:30They're getting a little
- 1:20:32overly concerned I think about
- 1:20:34face offs here, sir.
- 1:20:35I think somebody else jumped the gun,
- 1:20:36not the centers this time,
- 1:20:38they're keeping Harris and Polis in,
- 1:20:40both Walter Kachuk and Bob Bourne,
- 1:20:42who had thrown out his face off,
- 1:20:44and then were on the board,
- 1:20:45they jumped into that circle
- 1:20:46before the puck was dropped,
- 1:20:47one of the other officials blew the whistle.
- 1:20:49Now they try it again,
- 1:20:50of this time we got a clean face off,
- 1:20:51it's sent to the next corner,
- 1:20:52Dennis Wampen rolls it around,
- 1:20:53back behind is not for Hart,
- 1:20:55Hart checked by Fabron,
- 1:20:56shoots it out of the zone,

- 1:20:58born up with it,
- 1:20:59he's in across the range alive,
- 1:21:00makes the move,
- 1:21:00back pass,
- 1:21:01Harris shoots at it,
- 1:21:02goes wide,
- 1:21:03on the rebound is Wayfod Kachuk,
- 1:21:04a hit for Brechner,
- 1:21:05Brechner to center,
- 1:21:06a lead that is overthrown,
- 1:21:08Hart is back for it now,
- 1:21:10back behind the outer net,
- 1:21:11whips it around the board,
- 1:21:12Wayfod Kachuk,
- 1:21:14and he shoots it out of the zone,
- 1:21:15Marant flags it down at center,
- 1:21:17back pass for Greshner,
- 1:21:18back the other way it goes to Marant,
- 1:21:20Marant moves up to the red line
- 1:21:22and then puts it in,
- 1:21:23it's to the left side of the goalcenter,
- 1:21:25Billy Smith,
- 1:21:26wound around the board,
- 1:21:26Poulos able to cut it off,
- 1:21:28he's checked in the corner by Kachuk,
- 1:21:29Poulos tries to get out to the board,
- 1:21:30knocked away,
- 1:21:31and it ends up at center,
- 1:21:33born and Kachuk come together,
- 1:21:34Bob Bourne,
- 1:21:35Bourne takes it away,
- 1:21:36Bourne loose on a thick check,
- 1:21:37Fabron,
- 1:21:37Fabron to the far corner,
- 1:21:38Fabron is hit by Hart in the corner,
- 1:21:41Fabron looks to get it out to the corner,
- 1:21:42it goes to Greshner,
- 1:21:43Greshner back to Fabron,
- 1:21:44and the full game is started by Hart,
- 1:21:46back pass Greshner,
- 1:21:47a late for Kachuk,
- 1:21:48between his legs,
- 1:21:49Fabron comes away with it,
- 1:21:50makes his move on Hart,
- 1:21:51throws it across the panel,
- 1:21:52keeps the weight,
- 1:21:53Fabron is there,
- 1:21:54Fabron is spun around by Hart,
- 1:21:55Fabron is held,
- 1:21:57and a penalty upcoming,
- 1:21:59penalty upcoming against the New York Outers,
- 1:22:02Jerry Hart is headed off for two minutes,
- 1:22:05you know most men's hairsprays look fine,
- 1:22:07but how do they feel?
- 1:22:08Well, you'll find that most of them
- 1:22:10make your hair feel wet when you spray them on,
- 1:22:13but Vitalis Dry 3 is different,
- 1:22:16it's the only leading hairspray that goes on almost dry,
- 1:22:19and when they do dry,
- 1:22:21most hairsprays make your hair feel stiff,
- 1:22:24but with Vitalis Dry 3,
- 1:22:26your hair feels softer,
- 1:22:27not nearly as stiff,
- 1:22:29Vitalis Dry 3,
- 1:22:31it's the hairspray that feels as good as it looks,
- 1:22:34it is a hold on Hart at 11.32,
- 1:22:37and the Rangers of 12.2 nothing now have the man advantage,
- 1:22:40and the face off coming up,
- 1:22:42left side of the out of their goal,
- 1:22:44Rachel Bickles and Mabon up front,
- 1:22:46Gilbert and Park are at the point.
- 1:22:49Billy Fabron with some great persistence in that,
- 1:22:53right boards all the way back up and down,
- 1:22:55giving it to Greshner,
- 1:22:56taking it back himself,
- 1:22:57and no wonder Hart had a full of penalties.
- 1:22:59On the face comes in front,
- 1:23:01Smith looks to clear out,
- 1:23:02come off, Park keeps in,
- 1:23:03dumps it back behind the out of the net,
- 1:23:04Lewis rolls it around the board,
- 1:23:06Gilbert flags it down off the right board,
- 1:23:07he's countered by Whiskball,
- 1:23:09Park is sent to the far boards,
- 1:23:11Ratel takes, he goes cross-sides,
- 1:23:13back pass for Park,
- 1:23:14goes into the shot,
- 1:23:15that is blocked,
- 1:23:15a sliding block and a great one by Headey,
- 1:23:18and it comes all the way down.
- 1:23:19Nice.
- 1:23:20Villamur out to stop and he leaves the park,
- 1:23:22the minute minute of him remaining on the Hart penalty,
- 1:23:25Rangers trail, 2-0,
- 1:23:26Ratel to center,
- 1:23:27Ratel leaves Fabron,
- 1:23:28knocked away,
- 1:23:29Ratel recovers,
- 1:23:30sends to Fabron of the corner,
- 1:23:31in front for Vickers,
- 1:23:32knocked aside by the defense,
- 1:23:34kept in though by Park,
- 1:23:35right point feed for Gilbert,
- 1:23:37throws it ahead,
- 1:23:37broken up again by Whiskball,
- 1:23:39and it clears all the way down,
- 1:23:41left side of Villamur,
- 1:23:43back board is Park,
- 1:23:44a minute 10 remaining,
- 1:23:45there you are,
- 1:23:46that out of the penalty,
- 1:23:47as Park starts up,
- 1:23:48Rangers go right to left,
- 1:23:49the feed for Ratel at center,
- 1:23:51he shoots ahead,
- 1:23:52now for Butler,
- 1:23:53it's off his gate,
- 1:23:54Smith comes out,
- 1:23:54looks to clear,
- 1:23:55cannot, kept in by Park,
- 1:23:56he shoots,
- 1:23:57hit goes wide,
- 1:23:58out of the flexion,
- 1:23:59Park with the rebound of the corner,
- 1:24:00Park spinning,
- 1:24:01looks to set up,
- 1:24:02Vickers goes back to the point now,
- 1:24:03Park goes into the right,
- 1:24:04put down a joke there,
- 1:24:05swings it on the left point for Vickers,
- 1:24:07he shoots, hit a clock,
- 1:24:08hits Wilson,
- 1:24:09Smith can't find it,
- 1:24:10Butler does,
- 1:24:11and Dave Lewis goes right at you,
- 1:24:13and Vickers starts pounding away,
- 1:24:15Butler ends up in the course,
- 1:24:17and is really crunching up,
- 1:24:18Butler ending up on top of Dave Lewis,
- 1:24:21landing some lifts and rights,
- 1:24:22with Lewis completely out of position,
- 1:24:25that puck was loose,
- 1:24:26near the skates of the goal,
- 1:24:28kind of Billy Smith,
- 1:24:29meanwhile Brad Park,
- 1:24:30here the way for Marko,
- 1:24:31just to keep him aside,
- 1:24:33and with that loose park,
- 1:24:35Butler in on the play,
- 1:24:37was not stopped by Lewis,
- 1:24:39it was actually put.
- 1:24:40Lewis just kept punching it,
- 1:24:42Butler was down on his knees,
- 1:24:44and then Butler somehow got up,
- 1:24:46mom I don't know how he did it,
- 1:24:47with Lewis just flailing away,
- 1:24:49the shot by Park,
- 1:24:50put somebody in front of the net,
- 1:24:52and dropped at Billy Smith's feet,
- 1:24:54and he was looking straight ahead,
- 1:24:56didn't even know the puck was at his feet,
- 1:24:57the Rangers were unable to put the puck in the net.
- 1:25:01Jerry Butler's entrance onto this line,
- 1:25:05really sparked them,
- 1:25:06for the 20, 30 seconds that he was set on the ice,
- 1:25:10and off Butler is set on that line,
- 1:25:12with Lewis.
- 1:25:14Billy Fairburn had started on the line,
- 1:25:16on the power play,
- 1:25:17however he was on the ice,
- 1:25:19when the Rangers, Jerry Hart drew the penalty,
- 1:25:21and right before he drew the penalty,
- 1:25:22as we mentioned,
- 1:25:23Fairburn was digging up and down the board,
- 1:25:25for about 30 seconds without stopping,
- 1:25:27and I'm sure he was replaced by Butler,
- 1:25:29because he was tired,
- 1:25:31Butler using his power to break through,
- 1:25:33on one opportunity,
- 1:25:34and almost checked Smith on the play,
- 1:25:35Smith was able to poke the puck out,
- 1:25:37and Park stopped it,
- 1:25:39just as it was on the blue line,
- 1:25:41and took that shot that just lay at Billy Smith's feet.
- 1:25:46We have 48 seconds remaining,
- 1:25:50on the Jerry Hart penalty,
- 1:25:51and now, referee Bruce Hood,
- 1:25:55has handled out,
- 1:26:00let's see,
- 1:26:01five minutes apiece,
- 1:26:02for fighting on both,
- 1:26:04and tributaries of peace,
- 1:26:06for roughing to both Butler and Lewis,
- 1:26:09at 12.44.
- 1:26:12So both of these players will be off seven minutes,
- 1:26:14and will not affect,
- 1:26:16player personnel out on the ice,
- 1:26:18the Rangers right now,
- 1:26:19will have a four on three advantage,
- 1:26:21for 48 seconds,
- 1:26:22and then as Hart's penalty expires,
- 1:26:25teams will be playing at full strength at five apiece,
- 1:26:28and those seven minutes,
- 1:26:29those players will not be allowed out on the ice,
- 1:26:31for the next seven minutes.
- 1:26:33Mays off, coming up,
- 1:26:35to the left side,
- 1:26:36of the island of that,
- 1:26:38with Terrell,
- 1:26:38looks to get it out,
- 1:26:39but a finish up by Heading,
- 1:26:41Heading to center,
- 1:26:41two on one,
- 1:26:42Pondford left,
- 1:26:43we pop it across the ranger,
- 1:26:44down to the drive,
- 1:26:45score!
- 1:26:46It is a shorthanded goal,
- 1:26:50for Dennis Pondford,
- 1:26:52of the New York Islanders,
- 1:26:53and they now leave the Rangers,
- 1:26:55for the score,
- 1:26:56of three nothing.
- 1:26:58Dennis Pondford,
- 1:26:59taking his time,
- 1:27:00setting up to bat the long man back,
- 1:27:02put it through Villamire's leg,
- 1:27:04and the Islanders doing what the Rangers did last night,
- 1:27:07the Rangers did it all in the first period,
- 1:27:09two goals,
- 1:27:10they're gonna hit two nothing,
- 1:27:11and then score a shorthanded goal,
- 1:27:13they're gonna have three two,
- 1:27:15I made a mistake,
- 1:27:15I'm on a five on four situation,
- 1:27:17not a four on three.
- 1:27:19With those penalties on Butler,
- 1:27:22and Lewis,
- 1:27:23only affecting Butler and Lewis,
- 1:27:26so they'll both be gone for seven minutes straight.
- 1:27:28On the faceoff at center,
- 1:27:30Rangers still have the man in bed at Joe Bergen,
- 1:27:32and he's up across the out of the line,
- 1:27:34he over skates at the far side,
- 1:27:36Westball takes it away,
- 1:27:38and Westball shoots it all the way down,
- 1:27:40Mark is back forward now,
- 1:27:42rushed by heading,
- 1:27:43Mark circles in his own end,
- 1:27:45ahead it goes to Middleton,
- 1:27:47and Irvin cuts back the other way,
- 1:27:48sends to Irvin,
- 1:27:49Irvin leads for Tell,
- 1:27:51Retell is up to the out of the line,
- 1:27:53looks to split the line,
- 1:27:54and Marshall Stick checks it away,
- 1:27:56Marshall looks to wind it around,
- 1:27:58it's locked aside,
- 1:27:59Irvin with Irvin,
- 1:28:00he loses on a poke check to Dennis Putman,
- 1:28:02and Putman clears it all the way down,
- 1:28:04Dennis Putman has really taken over this game,
- 1:28:07a goal by Putman,
- 1:28:08shorthanded from heading at 12.51,
- 1:28:10he's stood the last two,
- 1:28:11and the out of the line is down,
- 1:28:12it's three to nothing,
- 1:28:13and the Rangers are a rattled hockey club right now,
- 1:28:16Irvin to center,
- 1:28:17that penalty on Hart has expired,
- 1:28:19a pass has been for Stumkowski,
- 1:28:21then a return,
- 1:28:21Irvin to the end of the game,
- 1:28:22and he's lost,
- 1:28:23leads a three on one now to the drive,
- 1:28:25the save may be made for Villamur,
- 1:28:28but his loose attack has parked on Southerland,
- 1:28:31Joe Villamur is a rattled goaltender,
- 1:28:34he has not been shot,
- 1:28:35now the puck sent to the far left,
- 1:28:37the play before St. Louis,
- 1:28:39and Park combined to phrase it,
- 1:28:40play his goal.
- 1:28:41And he's acting as though he's injured,
- 1:28:43he did hurt his right knee,
- 1:28:44he got shaken up on that one,
- 1:28:46making the first save,
- 1:28:47unable to control the rebound,
- 1:28:49Pickle, Kenny, Jackman over the board,
- 1:28:51he is going in to play goal
- 1:28:53for the remainder of the hockey game,
- 1:28:54Villamur, as I mentioned,
- 1:28:56hurt his knee last night,
- 1:28:57on his last collision,
- 1:28:58not quiet to it,
- 1:28:59on the last collision,
- 1:29:01Villamur got up very slowly,
- 1:29:03and here comes Villamur to the bench,
- 1:29:05Jackman going into the net.
- 1:29:08That's Eddie, Eddie,
- 1:29:10from the third round,
- 1:29:12Rankin's on the long way to come
- 1:29:14to get back in the soccer game,
- 1:29:15and that's the Jackman,
- 1:29:17jumped off the boards here,
- 1:29:19a South URF,
- 1:29:20as he passed the Rankin's on the bench,
- 1:29:23he was screaming at them,
- 1:29:25and from what I could pick up on the repeat,
- 1:29:28it was not over.
- 1:29:30That's right, Bob,
- 1:29:31it is a three-goal lead, of course,
- 1:29:33pretty tough to come back from,
- 1:29:35but a playoff game,
- 1:29:36you get one goal,
- 1:29:37and the other team starts thinking,
- 1:29:39three goals is not a big lead,
- 1:29:41in a Stanley Cup playoff game,
- 1:29:43although sometimes they stay checking
- 1:29:45in Stanley Cup, not so.
- 1:29:47Well, the Rangers have to break the stand open,
- 1:29:50they have to play right off and right,
- 1:29:51they're trailing three-nothing on the face,
- 1:29:53Kinkowski rolls it down,
- 1:29:55it's that left side of the ground on the net,
- 1:29:58penalty upcoming now,
- 1:29:59the Rangers are battling for the puck at the far side,
- 1:30:03and Ron Harris is gonna be called for a slap.
- 1:30:06Harris lost his temper,
- 1:30:08could not get to that lead pass from Kinkowski,
- 1:30:11and I saw him string his stick,
- 1:30:12and he's gonna, for two minutes,
- 1:30:14flip-break right here for station identification.
- 1:30:17Hi folks, I'm Gene Claven on WNEW,
- 1:30:20and you're hearing this game,
- 1:30:21I'm on every morning from 5.30 to 10.
- 1:30:23Now I'll tell you what's wrong with the game today.
- 1:30:25There's a, Gene is always so helpful.
- 1:30:31And I think a lot of people can suggest
- 1:30:33what is wrong with the game today
- 1:30:34from the Razor front of you.
- 1:30:35Ron Harris off, slashing at 14-20,
- 1:30:38Rangers are down three-nothing,
- 1:30:40and they filled even a bigger hole right here,
- 1:30:43because the out of those,
- 1:30:45well they're half the man advantage,
- 1:30:46face off coming up outside the Islander blue line.
- 1:30:50A lot of pressure right now on Eddie Johnston,
- 1:30:51and another goal here could really
- 1:30:54break it open for the Islander.
- 1:30:55He hasn't had a shot on goal yet,
- 1:30:57and he has to face the power play.
- 1:31:00Kachuk and Faber up front, Marat and Park are back.
- 1:31:04On the face-off, picked up by Billy Harris,
- 1:31:06loses out of poke check to pass,
- 1:31:08ahead for Faber and Faber and out of Kachuk.
- 1:31:10Kachuk to the out of the blue line,
- 1:31:12Kachuk swinging in, looks the split through,
- 1:31:15loses on a stick check, then his puntman takes it away.
- 1:31:17He's to center, he's to the Ranger line.
- 1:31:19Back past the born, a drive goes wide.
- 1:31:21On the rebound, a picked off by Harris at the near boards.
- 1:31:24Headbakes, cuts to the corner, he's checked by Marat.
- 1:31:27He's hit against the born by Marat,
- 1:31:28but he's able to get it up to John Farnham at the right part.
- 1:31:31Hustles his way along the boards against Kachuk,
- 1:31:33Marat comes away and is able to work it free
- 1:31:36and shoot it all the way down.
- 1:31:37A minute 20 remaining on that Ranger penalty to Rob Harris.
- 1:31:41Back behind the net, picked up by born,
- 1:31:43time starts up, the Islanders have the man advantage.
- 1:31:46A lead on the right, Pat Mendes is John
- 1:31:48popping up to center down the center slot.
- 1:31:50Back to born at the Ranger line,
- 1:31:51he flicks in right side of Chalkamon,
- 1:31:53and he bangs it off the board.
- 1:31:55Picked off by punt at the far side,
- 1:31:57he's chopped up by Gillies,
- 1:31:58loses on the stick check, the born,
- 1:32:00throws it in, Gillies into the suit.
- 1:32:02Along with Marat, Gillies gets to it out to the point,
- 1:32:04John Pumphin sends it at the middle,
- 1:32:06Harris has bumped him behind on the run,
- 1:32:08and Faber takes the nose puck and guns it all the way down.
- 1:32:1250 seconds remaining on the Ranger penalty,
- 1:32:14Sanderson steps on there, the Rangers change off the fly.
- 1:32:17Dennis Poppin after it, back behind his net,
- 1:32:20checked by Sanderson, winds it around now for Howard,
- 1:32:22skating at center on the left wing,
- 1:32:24goes into the same move on it.
- 1:32:25Poppin into the left wing, the middle drive,
- 1:32:27sends it in front, Nicebroom did not get the shot off,
- 1:32:30he was checked from behind,
- 1:32:31puck is rolled around the board,
- 1:32:33kept in by Saint-Laurent, his pass,
- 1:32:34intercepted by Greshner.
- 1:32:36Now Greshner cuts to his left, looks to kill McClark,
- 1:32:3825 seconds on the Ranger penalty,
- 1:32:40now Greshner comes spinning out of his zone
- 1:32:42around Saint-Laurent at center,
- 1:32:43muscles away, it's past the out of the blue line,
- 1:32:46cuts to the far side, a cut to the center of the net,
- 1:32:48pass to center, but he's turned around back behind
- 1:32:50but that Faber and Rietrieves moves to the corner
- 1:32:53in honor of the ice, he is checked on the play,
- 1:32:55puck is loose, work free now by Nicebroom,
- 1:32:58Nicebroom to center, Paul Deonaldis,
- 1:32:59Nicebroom up for the Ranger line,
- 1:33:01Nicebroom breaks for the near corner,
- 1:33:02back past Poppin, John Poppin with a shot,
- 1:33:05and it's blocked by Greshner,
- 1:33:06kicks it out to center, skips by Stupkowski,
- 1:33:08there's all the way down, as Brown Harris returns,
- 1:33:11Burt Marshall up with it, Paul Deonaldis,
- 1:33:12Steven Ozonat springs it around the boards now for Howard,
- 1:33:15hit it goes to Saint-Laurent,
- 1:33:16that's by the bridge, Brown Harris,
- 1:33:17Bumper on the play,
- 1:33:18no one comes over to pick up the loose puck,
- 1:33:20he's checked by Marat,
- 1:33:21puck picked up now by Stupkowski,
- 1:33:23Marat goes to the ice,
- 1:33:24and Stupkowski moves to center,
- 1:33:26Stummer is up across the out of the line,
- 1:33:28Stummer cuts in, here's the shot,
- 1:33:29it is blocked by John Poppin,
- 1:33:31and the out of the break up by,
- 1:33:32led by Poppin, he's up to the Ranger line,
- 1:33:35breaks wide on Marat,
- 1:33:36now a back pass for Nicebroom,
- 1:33:37Stumper falls short,
- 1:33:39stick to side by Chalkin,
- 1:33:40out in front for Drew and Nuck the way,
- 1:33:42comes to the point now to Marshall,
- 1:33:43his drive is a beautiful kick save on the rebound,
- 1:33:46Howard gets it on to the right point,
- 1:33:47to John Poppin, a cross-side fade,
- 1:33:49taken by Ratel with no islander in sight,
- 1:33:52and Ratel moves to center,
- 1:33:53Ratel stick handles that on the out of the line,
- 1:33:55a bump for Stupkowski,
- 1:33:56back pass for Irvin,
- 1:33:58slapped to side,
- 1:33:59kept alive by Riano,
- 1:34:00this Nicebroom shoots it out to center,
- 1:34:02nice jump after his own pass,
- 1:34:04most pass question of the corner,
- 1:34:05tries to flick it in front,
- 1:34:06now he does for Howard,
- 1:34:07he shoots, same thing by Chalkin,
- 1:34:09but it looks very sharp,
- 1:34:10Stupkowski ahead now for Ratel,
- 1:34:12Ratel is up to center,
- 1:34:13Leib-Berberly makes his first touch now,
- 1:34:15a pass for Irvin on the left wing,
- 1:34:17Pemberley is coming against the islander,
- 1:34:19wait a second,
- 1:34:20Chalkin and Howard go out at each other,
- 1:34:22and they get entangled,
- 1:34:25Howard did not want to get it, no!
- 1:34:27Merritt did not look to go back at Chalkin,
- 1:34:30and I was not looking that way,
- 1:34:32with play developing,
- 1:34:33two on left,
- 1:34:34and Chalkin and Howard
- 1:34:36started to turn each other around,
- 1:34:38Chalkin and Trotting
- 1:34:39get off a punch on Howard,
- 1:34:40and Howard was not looking
- 1:34:43to get entangled at all.
- 1:34:44I don't know who made first contact either,
- 1:34:47we were watching the line rush up ice,
- 1:34:49but from the indications,
- 1:34:51Hood did not blow his whistle
- 1:34:52when the islanders had possession of the puck,
- 1:34:55the whistle was not blown
- 1:34:56until the islanders went into the ranger zone,
- 1:34:58where Howard and Chalkin were,
- 1:34:59so there could not be an offside call,
- 1:35:01I mean, there had to be an offside call
- 1:35:03even though Chalkin had left the net,
- 1:35:05so I don't know if Hood,
- 1:35:08the crowd reacted very, very violently,
- 1:35:10I don't know who made first contact,
- 1:35:11we'll have to see from how Bruce Hood
- 1:35:14took the bat in the penalty.
- 1:35:18It was an unusual situation,
- 1:35:19because Gary Howard
- 1:35:23never want to keep away
- 1:35:26from a fisticuff situation,
- 1:35:30did not look to go back at any Chalkin,
- 1:35:34Chalkin had his mask on,
- 1:35:36you punch a guy with that mask on,
- 1:35:38and that hand's gonna hurt.
- 1:35:39I know Gary Howard is playing
- 1:35:41with a full tendon in his left hand,
- 1:35:43and prior to the Stanley Cup series,
- 1:35:45he had his glove glued and taped on,
- 1:35:47not one hand, and that could be one reason.
- 1:35:49Peter Stemkowski coming off the ice,
- 1:35:52he could have been hit with a third bat in penalty,
- 1:35:55we don't know, we'll have to wait until Bruce Hood
- 1:35:59makes the call on the play.
- 1:36:02Well, 2.26,
- 1:36:05the second period,
- 1:36:06and suddenly things are breaking out,
- 1:36:09what started out as a cautious style hockey game
- 1:36:12has now erupted,
- 1:36:14particularly with the Islanders
- 1:36:15in part by the score of three nothing.
- 1:36:18Right here, let's pause for this word.
- 1:36:21We're the old one, too.
- 1:36:23I get you in the head,
- 1:36:25and I get you in the stomach.
- 1:36:27So enjoy your party.
- 1:36:29Eat, drink, dance until dawn,
- 1:36:32so you can late for work.
- 1:36:33We'll see you in the morning,
- 1:36:35with the old one, too.
- 1:36:40Alka-Seltzer, let's get out of here!
- 1:36:43For aches and pains with upset stomach,
- 1:36:44try Alka-Seltzer with specially buffered aspirin,
- 1:36:46plots and acids,
- 1:36:47who's only as directed.
- 1:36:49It gives the old one, too,
- 1:36:50pure one, too.
- 1:36:56Here they,
- 1:36:57here they come out,
- 1:37:00Stemkowski, as you said, Sal,
- 1:37:02is through,
- 1:37:03through the evening.
- 1:37:05Game misconduct for being third man in.
- 1:37:08Gary Howitt, two minutes for ruffling.
- 1:37:11And Ranger Goaltender, Ed Jockeman,
- 1:37:13two minutes for ruffing,
- 1:37:15two minutes for napshaki.
- 1:37:17So apparently, that fight was precipitated
- 1:37:19by Jockeman, at least.
- 1:37:22That is where Bruce Hood picked it up,
- 1:37:24because he was not looking in that direction,
- 1:37:26like no one was with play developing
- 1:37:28a huff ice in the Outer.
- 1:37:29So in fact, if Bruce would have peered,
- 1:37:31and the Outer's thought,
- 1:37:33that there was a penalty upcoming,
- 1:37:34against them,
- 1:37:35because they did not see the Jockeman,
- 1:37:38Howitt situation develop.
- 1:37:41So the Rangers lose out on this one all around,
- 1:37:43at 17-34, the top of the panel.
- 1:37:46As you said, Mom,
- 1:37:47when Jockeman came into the game,
- 1:37:48he was yelling at his players,
- 1:37:49as he skated past the bench.
- 1:37:51He, of course, coming from the far end,
- 1:37:52and had a skate right by the entire Ranger bench.
- 1:37:55He made two beautiful saves,
- 1:37:57one on a shot from the point,
- 1:37:58and another with Bobby Nystrom,
- 1:38:00in all alone on Jockeman.
- 1:38:02And he last year,
- 1:38:03sort of sparked the team against Montreal,
- 1:38:05and Philadelphia,
- 1:38:06even though they lost a series of,
- 1:38:08in seven games,
- 1:38:09through the Flyers,
- 1:38:10down in Philadelphia.
- 1:38:11And then he tried to light some sort of a fuse for them,
- 1:38:14or some sort of a fire for the Rangers,
- 1:38:16to spark them to come from behind in this.
- 1:38:18Huff and a half, three nothing,
- 1:38:20two more, 26 seconds left in the second period.
- 1:38:23And now they have to kill off a penalty.
- 1:38:24So, big opportunity right now,
- 1:38:28for the Rangers, Roger Bear and Jean Ratel,
- 1:38:31out on the ice.
- 1:38:32The Islanders, right now,
- 1:38:34they will not kill off the penalty right away.
- 1:38:36That penalty will not start,
- 1:38:38until there are 26 seconds left in this period.
- 1:38:40They'll play four on four,
- 1:38:41until the penalty to Howlett expires,
- 1:38:43and Howlett can return to the ice.
- 1:38:44The Islanders will be up a man.
- 1:38:47Nick Febuey serving those Jockeman penalties.
- 1:38:50Face off coming up now,
- 1:38:51outside the Ranger, Lula,
- 1:38:53on the face, Park controls.
- 1:38:56Now Park flicks off to Harris.
- 1:38:58Harris up to center.
- 1:39:00Harris with return on the left,
- 1:39:01across the Island alarm,
- 1:39:03but a whistle forward and offside,
- 1:39:04with Ratel in ahead of the play.
- 1:39:06Right now, folks, tubs are down a man.
- 1:39:11And when Howlett returns,
- 1:39:13following his two minute penalty for roughing,
- 1:39:15the Islanders will have the man advantage.
- 1:39:18We have two 15 left,
- 1:39:21in the second period,
- 1:39:22and the Rangers trailing the Islanders,
- 1:39:24three nothing, Gillies and Dennis Putman twice.
- 1:39:26Putman's goals coming here on the second one,
- 1:39:28on the power play, one short handed.
- 1:39:30John Putman takes the face.
- 1:39:32He cross-bites Demarschal with a turn for Putman.
- 1:39:34Up to center, leap and draw,
- 1:39:35and it's too deep.
- 1:39:36He carries all the way down,
- 1:39:37across the Ranger goal line.
- 1:39:39Ron Harris is back forward now.
- 1:39:41Harris moves to the near corner,
- 1:39:42ahead for Ratel.
- 1:39:43He's bothered by Parisi.
- 1:39:45Tremendous checking game for JP Parisi.
- 1:39:47Now here's Park to center.
- 1:39:49Park stick handles and across the Islander blue line.
- 1:39:51Now Park puts on the brakes.
- 1:39:53Park cuts to his rep.
- 1:39:55Park circles out to the point.
- 1:39:56Harris wide open shot, shoots wide.
- 1:39:59On the rebound, it carries around the boards
- 1:40:01and all the way down ice.
- 1:40:03Across the Ranger blue line, Park is back forward.
- 1:40:06A minute and a half remaining in the second period.
- 1:40:08Park a lead for Ratel.
- 1:40:09It's too deep.
- 1:40:10Ratel cannot get to it.
- 1:40:12Comes deep and out of the ice,
- 1:40:13picked off by Burt Marshall.
- 1:40:15Standing back behind his own net,
- 1:40:17watched by the fore-checking Ratel.
- 1:40:19Marshall flips it off the boards for Drowan.
- 1:40:21Going into center now for the Islanders.
- 1:40:23That's Parisi left.
- 1:40:24For the Ranger line, cuts to the far boards,
- 1:40:27goes to the far corner, around Harris who falls down.
- 1:40:30That loses back the rebound and Park comes in with it.
- 1:40:33A minute remaining now, another second minute.
- 1:40:36Park a back pass but a stop by Chalkiman.
- 1:40:38Leaves for Rod Harris.
- 1:40:40Harris cuts down the line.
- 1:40:41Moves it ahead now to Ratel.
- 1:40:43Ratel cross-ice intercepted by Westphal.
- 1:40:46Westphal loses control and Ratel takes it back.
- 1:40:49Ratel back pass for Park.
- 1:40:51Park up to center.
- 1:40:53Now Park up to the end of the line.
- 1:40:55Park cuts right, a drop for Harris.
- 1:40:57Into the slot, Kachuk shoots, stick save made.
- 1:41:00Rebound clear, comes to Kachuk.
- 1:41:02He is up top of the play and Dennis Parkman
- 1:41:05shoots it up center.
- 1:41:05Gillies leads a two-on-one across the Ranger line.
- 1:41:07Brad, stick save made, rebound.
- 1:41:09Westphal is off the glass back behind the net.
- 1:41:11Gillies able to race down the rebound,
- 1:41:13puts on the stick of Harbin.
- 1:41:15He is knocked off the play.
- 1:41:17Kachuk having a turn all the way down.
- 1:41:19Down the out of the side by the man at advantage.
- 1:41:21Westphal up to the Ranger line, cross-ice Gillies.
- 1:41:23He shoots, stick save made by Jockerman.
- 1:41:26Huck is still loose, comes out for the point to Marshall.
- 1:41:28Marshall on the drive, stopped by Kachuk.
- 1:41:31Westphal keeps it alive but time runs out.
- 1:41:33In the second period of play.
- 1:41:35That's the end of the second period.
- 1:41:38With the New York Islanders leading the New York Rangers
- 1:41:42by the score of three nothing.
- 1:41:45We'll be back in a minute.
- 1:41:47We've got the Racer, we've got the Racer, we've got the Racer G.
- 1:41:54A and C.
- 1:41:57See the car, new wax can be.
- 1:42:03Drive the Pacer and G.
- 1:42:09Piper's old car is here.
- 1:42:14Pacer is a whole new kind of car and it's at your AMC dealers now.
- 1:42:19With Pacer you get the ride, the room, the comfort of a much bigger car.
- 1:42:24Plus it's so smooth and stable you've got to drive it to the lake.
- 1:42:28And Pacer gives you the wide, wide coverage of the AMC Fire Protection Plan.
- 1:42:33See the new Pacer today.
- 1:42:35We've got the Pacer, we've got the Pacer, we've got the Pacer.
- 1:42:47Shots are drawn in the second period.
- 1:42:49Islanders 13, Rangers 11 overall after two.
- 1:42:53Rangers 26 shots at Billy Smith who has been back in goal for the New York Islanders.
- 1:43:00Now the Islanders with 21 against the combination of Villamur and Chamberlain Chacaman are coming in at the 14 minute mark of the second period.
- 1:43:07In the first period it was Gillies with his second goal of the playoffs from Bourne and Markle at the 16 minute mark.
- 1:43:14And then Dennis Peppin in the halfway deflecting in a shot taken from the Parkour brother John.
- 1:43:19John Peppin and Bob Maistrom picking up the assist at 8.26 and then Dennis Peppin on a short-handed four-ringer.
- 1:43:27Second of the second period was hitting assisting at 12.51.
- 1:43:33Medleys in the second, Howlett for a hold, 3.36.
- 1:43:38Fairburn and Dennis Popman together for charging 5.08.
- 1:43:42Greschner for a grip, 6.30. Mark for holding, 11.32.
- 1:43:46Popman and Lewis together, two minutes apiece for roughing, five minutes apiece for fighting at 12.44.
- 1:43:53Harris for a slash at the 15.20 and then Howlett together with Chacaman at 17.34 as they got involved in front of the Ranger that.
- 1:44:04Two minutes on Howlett for roughing, Chacaman received two for cross-check, two for roughing.
- 1:44:09And that finally served by Nick Bebely and then Stankowski got the game miscovered putting third man in at 17.34.
- 1:44:18So the Rangers are now very much with their backs to the wall as the third period upcoming in about 15 minutes from now
- 1:44:30represents what could be the final period of hockey for the 74-75 Rangers unless there is an incredible turnabout very, very shortly.
- 1:44:40Three-nothing to score, the Idol is on top after two periods.
- 1:44:45And the final moment, Sal, we'll be talking with Pittsburgh Penguin Scout Jack Riley.
- 1:44:51Final score, the Chicago Blackhawks have defeated the Boston Brawns 6-4.
- 1:44:57That is a final and so in an upset, the Blackhawks have taken the series from Boston two games to one.
- 1:45:08Bob Boston had the first game in that series.
- 1:45:10I've been told that the shot's on goal in that game.
- 1:45:13Now this is not official, it's not official statistic, well 51 to 18.
- 1:45:18Boston taking 51 shots to Tony Esposito, Chicago scoring six goals on 18 shots on Boston goal-tenders, whoever it may have been.
- 1:45:28That's incredible. We'll have to check that out.
- 1:45:30Yeah, we will. It's Jack Riley that just came down from the press box, relayed that information to us.
- 1:45:36Okay, now the Braves are breaking the action right here between periods two and three.
- 1:45:41It's about time to remind you about new Ultrabahn Super Dry anti-fusbra.
- 1:45:45Ultrabahn Super Dry not only sprays on really dry, it is also more effective in helping stop wetness.
- 1:45:52That's right, tests have shown that Ultrabahn Super Dry will help stop wetness better than White Guard.
- 1:45:57They're extra dry, soft and dry, and dry. They're all good.
- 1:46:01But tests have shown new Ultrabahn Super Dry is better.
- 1:46:05So why not try an anti-fusbra that is more effective in helping you stay dry.
- 1:46:09That is new Ultrabahn Super Dry.
- 1:46:12Between periods two and three, Islanders lead the Rangers by the score of 3-0 and here's Sal.
- 1:46:18Thank you, Marv. And my guest in between the second and third period is Jack Riley, who's scouting for the Pittsburgh Tanguines.
- 1:46:24Jack, this is a tremendous hockey game.
- 1:46:27My opinion, that first period, the goaltenders for the Islanders, there's been some talk about them lately, but Billy Smith, he's a turning point in this hockey game.
- 1:46:37Well, I think you're absolutely right, Sal. The first period I counted probably seven key saves that he made.
- 1:46:43It's sort of been actually five or six goals for the Rangers, but he came up real big.
- 1:46:47And apparently, this isn't what happened last night. Their goalkeeping wasn't that great, I understand.
- 1:46:52But Billy Smith has certainly come on. Islanders have played well, they've got a couple of breaks, they've capitalized, they've scored three goals every way.
- 1:47:01One shorthanded, one with the power play, and one at even strength.
- 1:47:04And I believe now that they're not going to become involved in any fisticuffs or any rough stuff. They're going to try and stay on the ice.
- 1:47:12However, that period, they didn't lay back. They went in a four-check, they didn't sit on their lead.
- 1:47:17And the Rangers are really going to have to come up with something here if they're going to come out of it and go on to the next round, because the Islanders right now are controlling the game.
- 1:47:26And as the Rangers open up, Sal, I think you can notice that there are so many two-and-three-on-one breaks against them, which happens. The Rangers have to take their chances.
- 1:47:35And the Islanders are alert enough to come up with these. And the goalkeeping hitting the post and maybe a little over-anxiousness have prevented them from maybe having a goal or two more.
- 1:47:48The Rangers have fallen into that pattern, losing to Minnesota here at the Guardians for about a week and a half remaining in the season.
- 1:47:56They were beaten here by Fern Rivard, who played exceptional in the first period, and that sort of took the play away.
- 1:48:01And Minnesota came up with a couple of goals, and that was it. The Rangers had a tough time fighting from behind.
- 1:48:07That's a pattern, I think. A goaltender being strong in the beginning of a hockey game is so important.
- 1:48:13Well, that's right. I feel sorry sometimes to hear the people criticize the Rangers because of not winning.
- 1:48:19But sometimes you do run up against not goalkeeping, and that makes a big difference.
- 1:48:24Last night I was in Toronto, and I saw the Los Angeles Kings and the Toronto Maple Leafs play, and as everybody knows, the Leafs won in overtime.
- 1:48:32But in the first period, Vashon was called upon to make all seven or eight big saves, just like Billy Smith has done here tonight.
- 1:48:40And he made them all except one, and instead of skating off the ice down four or five to nothing, they were only down one to nothing.
- 1:48:46They managed to come back and go ahead two-one. The Leafs tied it and eventually won it.
- 1:48:51And as I was saying before the game, I think Leafs might be a little fresher out there because they charted out last night after the game,
- 1:48:59whereas Los Angeles went this morning. And I know players don't get much sleep after a tough game. Your nerves are on edge.
- 1:49:06It was apparently 2 o'clock in the morning before the Los Angeles Kings could get to bed, and they have that long trip out there.
- 1:49:13However, they do have one thing going for them. Mr. Vashon is a great goalkeeper, and I'm not taking anything away from the Cray and the Leafs net,
- 1:49:21but he wasn't really tested, and if he comes up bad, LA could win it.
- 1:49:28It's a hard series to decide. It's a close one. They've both gone into overtime to win.
- 1:49:34The best is this series right now, but it ends this way. No team has taken advantage of their home ice.
- 1:49:40And I usually keep statistics during the season, and the team that is playing at home wins 62% of the time,
- 1:49:46and the team that scores the first goal wins 66% of the time.
- 1:49:50So if you're playing on your home ice and you shouldn't come up with the first goal, your chances are something like 85%.
- 1:49:56However, statistics are for the birds, I suppose, when the playoffs come along, and you're into a new series.
- 1:50:02That's a great one. You also made a statement. In fact, you made it twice.
- 1:50:07You talked about Vashon making the key saves for LA, although Toronto did end up winning the game.
- 1:50:11You talked about Smith making five or six tough saves.
- 1:50:15When you're scanning a game, are you looking at that? Are there no goals? Are there no count shots on goal?
- 1:50:20You have to look at the big saves, I think, are more important than all of the shots.
- 1:50:25You have a lot of shots from the blue line. Occasionally one does go in.
- 1:50:29Is that something you yourself look for as to see how well a goaltender is playing rather than the total shot?
- 1:50:34I don't think the total shots on goal mean too much. I think, as you pointed out, the key ones.
- 1:50:39I don't usually keep them, but I've been intending to keep key saves, and I did it the first period.
- 1:50:44I made it a point to every tough chance the goalkeeper had to handle.
- 1:50:48Billy Smith had seven tough ones, and I think Villamere had three.
- 1:50:52They are the big things to look for.
- 1:50:56It's surprising what a lift it gives a team.
- 1:50:59Here's a team like the Islanders who were a little disorganized in the first period.
- 1:51:03We have to be honest about that. There were some plays originating from the boards.
- 1:51:07One I can think of, I think, was Jude Drew, and threw it out to Rattelle right in the slot.
- 1:51:11The Islanders don't usually do this. They're well-disciplined hockey clubs coming out of their own end.
- 1:51:15They come up their sides. They don't usually come up the middle where you can get into some real problems.
- 1:51:20The Rangers didn't score. The Islanders can thank Billy Smith.
- 1:51:26He had held them in there long enough where they've been able to capitalize.
- 1:51:30I figure in the course of a season, good goalkeeping will steal five or six games a year you don't deserve to win.
- 1:51:36I'm not taking anything away from the Islanders.
- 1:51:38They didn't have the greatest first period, but they played well that second.
- 1:51:41They deserve to be ahead in the game, whether it's three to nothing or not.
- 1:51:45I wouldn't say they deserve to be ahead that much. I think it's a fairly even hockey game.
- 1:51:49But Smith has been the difference.
- 1:51:51Jack, you talked about the LA-Toronto series, the game in which you saw last night.
- 1:51:56That has to be a big series as far as the Pittsburgh Penguins are concerned.
- 1:51:59Well, it is now, Sal, especially since Boston were big.
- 1:52:03Boston were the fifth seed, Pittsburgh the sixth seed, and LA the fourth seed.
- 1:52:08So if LA gets knocked out as the fourth seed, and Boston has been knocked out as the fifth seed,
- 1:52:14then it moves Pittsburgh from sixth to fourth and gives them the advantage of home ice opening up on Sunday,
- 1:52:19which they never dreamed of, I don't think, that Boston and LA are knocked out.
- 1:52:24If they were knocked out, then Pittsburgh would meet the winner of this game here in Pittsburgh on Sunday, if LA loses.
- 1:52:30Talking about the Pittsburgh Penguins, they've had an outstanding season, especially at home.
- 1:52:35They've had a tremendous record at home. They've only lost five games there, and I think they were 35-5, I believe.
- 1:52:42I know the last 31 games they only lost one. They've had a lot of balance on the hockey club.
- 1:52:47They have nine fellows who scored over 20 goals, and the lines are evenly balanced.
- 1:52:53The so-called third line of LaRouche and Bob Kelly and Arnest, and I don't call it that, but I read about it as being called that,
- 1:53:00scored all the goals in the game on Tuesday night with LaRouche getting the winner.
- 1:53:07It's a great thing for a rookie to come into the league and score a winning goal in his first playoff game ever.
- 1:53:13It reminds me of Michel Brouillère, who some people may remember, played for Pittsburgh about four years ago,
- 1:53:18had one great rookie season, lost his life in a car accident in the offseason.
- 1:53:23He actually lingered on for nine months, but he lost his life, and he came up with a big goal.
- 1:53:28I remember we finished second that year, and we met Oakland, who finished fourth,
- 1:53:31and he came up with a winning goal in overtime out there when we eliminated Oakland to go on and beat St. Louis.
- 1:53:36It reminds me of him in that they come up with a big play in a big game, which is a sign of a champion.
- 1:53:42I also think you improved your goal-tending. You had some problems earlier.
- 1:53:46Oh, I don't know if you had problems, but Gary Innis has played well, and then you made a trade with Dennis Herndt,
- 1:53:51which sent over to Kansas City for Michel Plot, and the only time we saw Plot, he played against the Rangers out in Kansas City,
- 1:53:57and looked very shaky. Well, Plot has played well, but I think he needed a lot of work, and unfortunately,
- 1:54:05I think Mark Puello was going to use him quite extensively down the stretch,
- 1:54:09and he came up with an ankle injury and re-injured it the other night.
- 1:54:12So Gary Innis has had a lot of pressure on him this year, being a rookie.
- 1:54:16Most people have played very well, and he did a good job at both the opening games against St. Louis.
- 1:54:21I think he's come of age. I think he can do the job, and he feels that he's in a tough spot.
- 1:54:31I know that, speaking to him, that he feels it, but he's overcome it, and I think he can do the job for the Penguins,
- 1:54:37and they have a good defense. They check well in front, and I think they could be a real surprise in the playoffs.
- 1:54:43Oh, if they're meeting the Rangers and Islanders, it'll be, or Islanders will be quite a series.
- 1:54:48Jack, what do you look for the rest of this game? I know you have to open up them.
- 1:54:52Sure, the Rangers have to open up, but right now they're going to have to fight and kill off a power play opportunity.
- 1:54:57I think there's about a minute and 30 seconds left on a penalty to Jocomar.
- 1:55:01Well, there's no doubt about it. I think Emil realizes, and all the Rangers do, that they have to pull all out the stops.
- 1:55:06They've got to give it the best 20 minutes of the entire season now, and they have to put it in.
- 1:55:12I think if they're having trouble making plays going in, they'll get over the red line and fire it in with two guys in on the puck,
- 1:55:19hopefully the first guy to take the man and the second one take the puck and give it to the opening guy.
- 1:55:24The Islanders know this. The Islanders will be coming back and they will be trying to get that puck first.
- 1:55:29But I don't think you'll look for the Islanders taking any penalties if they can possibly help it.
- 1:55:35The Rangers are going to come out fighting. They know that this is a big 20 minutes,
- 1:55:39and Billy Smith continues to play the way he has. It'll be tough.
- 1:55:43But a hockey game is made up of 60 minutes, and 40 minutes doesn't necessarily mean the game.
- 1:55:49Maybe it will be this way at the end of 60, but we don't know. It's up to the guys on the ice now.
- 1:55:53Jack Riley, the Pittsburgh Penguins, thanks for coming on, and good luck to the Pittsburgh and the rest of the playoffs.
- 1:55:58Thank you very much.
- 1:55:59Mark, okay, so right here before the two teams come out for the start of play of the third period,
- 1:56:04let's send it to Bob Higgins at the WNAW newsroom. We'll be back after this word.
- 1:56:10Thank you, Mark. A special report from the WNAW newsroom.
- 1:56:13The fall of Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, to insurgent Khmer Rouge forces is imminent.
- 1:56:18U.S. Embassy in Phnom Penh has been ordered to pull out the North American officials evacuated from the capital,
- 1:56:23signaling the abandonment of the nation by the U.S.
- 1:56:26A statement issued by the State Department says this evacuation is taking place in an effort to ensure the safety of U.S. citizens in Cambodia.
- 1:56:33The evacuation being carried out by U.S. military helicopters with tactical aircraft in the vicinity in the event they are needed.
- 1:56:41The total number of Americans being airlifted out is around 150, including about 25 newsmen.
- 1:56:47I'm Bob Hagan, WNAW News. Now back to Sal Massina and Mark Albert.
- 1:56:50Period three of tonight's Rangers game.
- 1:56:53Thank you, Bob. Rangers are back on now. They will be from the Gulf.
- 1:56:56You are left in this third and what they hope will not be their final period of 74 and 75.
- 1:57:02The New York Islanders will be on in just a moment. We'll be back after this from Safer.
- 1:57:07Music
- 1:57:19Listen to the smooth sliding sound of a country steel guitar.
- 1:57:23See yourself on a fine summer evening doing what you please.
- 1:57:27Pleasing yourself with the mellow flavor of some fine cold beer.
- 1:57:31Not just any beer, Schaefer beer.
- 1:57:34Because Schaefer is the one beer that goes all evening, still tasting like the night is young.
- 1:57:39The one beer with flavor that never creates glass after frosty glass.
- 1:57:44Schaefer stays so smooth, so first beer fine that every Schaefer plays like music to your thirst.
- 1:57:51Schaefer, it's the one beer to have, to having more than one.
- 1:57:56Music
- 1:58:05The F&M Schaefer Brewing Company, New York, New York.
- 1:58:08All our Between Periods guests receive a Sony AM-FM Digimatic Clock Radio with push-button controls.
- 1:58:15Automatic sleep timer. The Sony also has illuminated easy-to-read clock numerals in that big three-inch speaker.
- 1:58:22It's not just the radio, it's a Sony. And as we get underway here in the third period,
- 1:58:27a minute thirty-four remaining on that Ranger penalty against Ed Jockinam that is being served by Nick Bemily.
- 1:58:33Rangers defend to our left with Jockinam.
- 1:58:36And this to our right with Billy Smith, who has been spectacular.
- 1:58:40Idle most rated by the storm, three-nil thing on the faceoff.
- 1:58:43Ed Westphal steps on, let's see if they call a too-many-minute on ice penalty.
- 1:58:48Hood tapped the puck, and Al Arbor had changed his mind, and let's see what happens right here.
- 1:58:54Westphal come out as the puck was dropped to talk to Bruce Hood about something.
- 1:59:00He is the captain of the team, and it's something the Lions have blew the whistle.
- 1:59:05As Westphal opened the door and made the step out on the ice, Hood had his back to the play.
- 1:59:09When the Lions would have to look for things like that, blew the whistle, canceling the faceoff.
- 1:59:13All right, so they dropped the puck once again, and on the drop, sent all the way down and out of the ice.
- 1:59:18Park back forward now.
- 1:59:19Islanders move right to left, Rangers left to right.
- 1:59:22Hard ahead now for Bourne, moves to center, and shoots in.
- 1:59:25A bounce to the right side of Jockinam, and he holds it away from Bourne, dumps it around the board.
- 1:59:29Fabulous after it looks to clear and does.
- 1:59:31Shoots it the length of the ice, stopped by the goaltender, Smith.
- 1:59:35A minute ten remaining on that Ranger penalty.
- 1:59:37Dennis Putnam is back forward.
- 1:59:39Down the island of it, now Putnam starts up, swings it on the near boards for Bourne.
- 1:59:43Bourne is up to center.
- 1:59:44A back pass for Putnam.
- 1:59:46Putnam down to center slot, feeds on the right to Bourne, breaks around,
- 1:59:49Kachuk to the far corner, now looks to center, he does, but Kachuk intercepts.
- 1:59:53Ahead for Faber at center, moving on.
- 1:59:55Gillies turned around by Gillies, and then Faber loses on a poke check.
- 1:59:59Penalty Harris takes it away.
- 2:00:01Forty seconds out, the Ranger penalty, Harris to center.
- 2:00:04Stick handles, then he's submarine by Park.
- 2:00:06He goes flying, Putt comes out in front of it, and that shock him and puts on the stick of Kachuk.
- 2:00:10Kachuk out of the Ranger zone, battles his way to center past St. Laurent,
- 2:00:15and then holds a back pass for Putt.
- 2:00:17Smith is in his own hand.
- 2:00:19Twenty-five seconds now on that Ranger penalty.
- 2:00:22Now Putt in his own hand, watched by Howard, throws it ahead for Marot.
- 2:00:26Marot guns it all the way down.
- 2:00:28Smith has to make a reeling save.
- 2:00:31Woods it and grabs it for Hart. Hart back behind his net, chased by Sanderson.
- 2:00:36Rangers trailing badly here, three-nuffing as Hart sends ahead for Howard.
- 2:00:40He's hit high and hard by Butler, the pass to St. Laurent at center.
- 2:00:44He's in across the Ranger line, loses on a stick check, and Greshner comes up with it.
- 2:00:48Greshner is sent flying to the ice, and a penalty called against the Islanders.
- 2:00:52A tripping penalty is called.
- 2:00:55Just as Beverly made his return, the Islanders are hit with a penalty right here.
- 2:01:01And so the Rangers will have the man advantage.
- 2:01:04Maybe your hands can tell you what to use with your hair.
- 2:01:08Spray a little of that hairspray that says it looks dry on one side of your hair,
- 2:01:12a little by Thomas, dry three on the other.
- 2:01:15Now, feel with your hands, the Viterbas Dry Three side feels practically dry.
- 2:01:20That other hairspray makes your hair feel wet,
- 2:01:23and when it does dry, it makes your hair feel stiff.
- 2:01:26The Viterbas Dry Three side feels softer, not nearly as stiff.
- 2:01:30Viterbas Dry Three, the hairspray that feels as good as it looks.
- 2:01:35It is two minutes for tripping, assessed on Gary Howard at one-three-nuff.
- 2:01:42And the Rangers needed an early goal to pull up their confidence.
- 2:01:45They have to beat Smith early in this period.
- 2:01:47Now they have the man advantage to try to do that.
- 2:01:50A little return on the faceoff at center, taken by Park.
- 2:01:53Park cuts back to his blue line.
- 2:01:55Ben goes cross-sides to Gilbert.
- 2:01:57Park rolls off his stick.
- 2:01:58He recovers and makes the move to center.
- 2:02:00Back the other way for Park.
- 2:02:02Park up to the out of the line, loses control.
- 2:02:04Vickers comes back for him.
- 2:02:06Now Vickers leads retail.
- 2:02:08It's all pissed at.
- 2:02:09He chases it down, loses control.
- 2:02:11Out of the sky, clear.
- 2:02:12Park keeps in.
- 2:02:13Out to Gilbert at the right point.
- 2:02:15A return for Park at the left point.
- 2:02:16He shoots.
- 2:02:17Save, man!
- 2:02:18Beautiful.
- 2:02:19And he holds on with Fiddleton kept in front of the net.
- 2:02:22Billy Smith with that butterfly save and the glove up in the air.
- 2:02:25The puck got through.
- 2:02:27Burt Marshall in front, did not stop it.
- 2:02:29Smith saw it all the way.
- 2:02:31He kept his blood there.
- 2:02:32Good save.
- 2:02:33Faceoff right side now at that island of the net.
- 2:02:36A minute and a half remaining on the island of penalty to Howard.
- 2:02:39On the drop, sent to the right side of the goal.
- 2:02:42Now Marshall swings it around the boards and all the way down.
- 2:02:46Jockeman stops it behind the net, leaves for Gilbert.
- 2:02:49And Gilbert starts up.
- 2:02:51Rangers skate left to right.
- 2:02:52Here's Gilbert up to center.
- 2:02:54A lead for Rattelle that humps over his stick and rolls to the stick of Lewis of the island of the net.
- 2:02:58And he clears all the way down.
- 2:03:00Stopped by Jockeman.
- 2:03:01He springs it ahead for Gilbert.
- 2:03:03Gilbert cuts back at his own head and now starts up.
- 2:03:06Accelerates to center.
- 2:03:08Leads Middleton in across the out of the line.
- 2:03:10He cuts in front.
- 2:03:11Back pass, McCuttle, shot.
- 2:03:12Save, man!
- 2:03:13Rattelle rolls it out to the point for Park.
- 2:03:16Park back the other way for Joe Baer.
- 2:03:18To the far corner, Vickers.
- 2:03:19Vickers sends it for Middleton.
- 2:03:21Shot stopped by Smith.
- 2:03:22Comes to Park.
- 2:03:23High drive.
- 2:03:24Here's off the glass back behind him.
- 2:03:25Rolls around the boards to Joe Baer.
- 2:03:27He goes cross-ice to Park.
- 2:03:28Plays it on the backhand at the left part.
- 2:03:30Park sets up to the corner and goes to Middleton.
- 2:03:33In front for Rattelle.
- 2:03:34Cannot get the stick down.
- 2:03:35It's rolled to the point.
- 2:03:36Joe Baer drives.
- 2:03:37Let's see.
- 2:03:38Is stopped in the midsection by Smith.
- 2:03:41And he holds on.
- 2:03:42Rangers getting the opportunities.
- 2:03:43The shots from far out.
- 2:03:45Trying one opportunity in close.
- 2:03:47Middleton just could not get to Park.
- 2:03:48And Park had the shot.
- 2:03:50Deflected in front.
- 2:03:51Rattelle with a rebound.
- 2:03:52And Billy Smith with a great kick save with his right foot.
- 2:03:5616-53.
- 2:03:58Remaining of this third period.
- 2:04:00Rangers down 3-0.
- 2:04:03Third and final game of this two out of three playoff series.
- 2:04:06Tied at one and thanks.
- 2:04:08Alpha face, that's puttman.
- 2:04:09Clears it all the way down.
- 2:04:10It's to the right side of the ranger.
- 2:04:13That shockerman stops it for Park.
- 2:04:15Rangers have a long way back.
- 2:04:17Ahead for Vickers at center.
- 2:04:18Leads Rattelle.
- 2:04:19Rattelle is up to the out of the line.
- 2:04:21Bank pass knocked away and cleared out of the zone.
- 2:04:23Park is back for it now.
- 2:04:25Watched by Westphal.
- 2:04:26Park spinning in his own head.
- 2:04:28Ahead it goes to Joe Baer.
- 2:04:30Headbakes on Westphal.
- 2:04:31Makes the turn.
- 2:04:32And starts up.
- 2:04:33Ahead now.
- 2:04:34Ka-choo.
- 2:04:35He's up to the out of the line.
- 2:04:36He cuts to his left side with a whistle.
- 2:04:38Four and offside.
- 2:04:39And will bring it back.
- 2:04:40Face off.
- 2:04:41Coming up now.
- 2:04:42Outside the out of the blue line.
- 2:04:44This time there's good work by the Islander forward.
- 2:04:46Eddie Westphal and Lauren Henning.
- 2:04:48They won a top two penalty killers in the league.
- 2:04:51All season long.
- 2:04:52They bought the rangers off.
- 2:04:54Killed the penalty beautifully.
- 2:04:55Eddie Westphal just does an outstanding job.
- 2:04:57And Henning just plays his spot.
- 2:05:00Checks what he has to.
- 2:05:02Gets that point in and bottles him up.
- 2:05:04Prevented from taking that shot on goal.
- 2:05:05And that combination able to kill off the out of the penalty
- 2:05:08with Howard returning on the face off.
- 2:05:10Curie hard controls for the Islanders.
- 2:05:12And it's cleared out of the zone.
- 2:05:14It is run down by Marotta for Ranger Line.
- 2:05:16Marotta now cuts deep in the zone.
- 2:05:18And the Islanders continuing their persistent board checking.
- 2:05:21Marotta stands behind the net.
- 2:05:23Then puts on the stick of Ka-choo.
- 2:05:24Ka-choo takes him to the right.
- 2:05:26Marotta's up to the Ranger Line.
- 2:05:27A lead for Ka-choo off his skate.
- 2:05:29Picked up by Bourne.
- 2:05:31Bourne is hit to the boards by Greshner.
- 2:05:33Buck is loose at the Ranger Line.
- 2:05:35Greshner comes up with it.
- 2:05:36Greshner to center.
- 2:05:37Greshner up across the Islander line.
- 2:05:40He's turned around by Hart.
- 2:05:41They bump each other against the boards.
- 2:05:43It's sent back behind the net.
- 2:05:45Dennis Putman is there.
- 2:05:46Putman cuts to the near corner.
- 2:05:48Putman moves to the near side.
- 2:05:49Watched by Ka-choo and shoots it out of the zone.
- 2:05:52Willie Harris could not get the stick on it.
- 2:05:54It carries across the Ranger Line.
- 2:05:55Marotta is there.
- 2:05:56Shoots it ahead now.
- 2:05:57Gillies takes that center.
- 2:05:59He over skates and Ka-choo comes back with it.
- 2:06:01Bank pass Fairburn.
- 2:06:02Fairburn to center.
- 2:06:03Fairburn around board.
- 2:06:05Fairburn around across that Islander line.
- 2:06:07Fairburn cuts and shoots.
- 2:06:08Score!
- 2:06:09Beautiful move.
- 2:06:15A single effort by Billy Faber.
- 2:06:17He carried from center through the entire Islander club.
- 2:06:22And the Rangers are finally on the board.
- 2:06:25And we shall see if that turns out to be a big goal.
- 2:06:28They now 12-3-1.
- 2:06:30What else can you say about beautiful on that break?

- 2:20:54center of the corner and out of the ice, Lewis after it, ball to the islanders, batted up by
- 2:20:57Lattell, winds it around the boards, ends up in the crowd at the far side of players call.
- 2:21:02And Maude, on this power play so far, in the offensive zone, John Lattell has lost two
- 2:21:07consecutive face off, the Rangers in as the Lattell line was in earlier, on two line shifts ago,
- 2:21:14Lattell again lost about two face off, islanders capitalizing on winning those face off,
- 2:21:19on the face off, back behind, Lewis, comes to park at the far side, into the corner now,
- 2:21:26Pickers, sets up, throws in front for Fairburn, he scores!
- 2:21:38The puck was shot down by Fairburn and it got it over the shoulder of Smith,
- 2:21:42and this game has turned around 6.33 remaining for a period and the Rangers who were trailing three
- 2:21:49numbers, now trailing three terms. All the pressure that was on the Rangers, they came back and tied
- 2:21:56it and the blow started a clear, intended by the islanders and Brad Park stopped it but quickly
- 2:22:02threw the puck into Victor's, did not waste any time, just shot it right back into Victor's who
- 2:22:06was in the left corner, Pickers just waited, waited, the islanders looked at the points,
- 2:22:10they, Pickers waited for Fairburn to cruise into the slot, and a beautiful pass by Steve
- 2:22:15Vickers on Fairburn's stick. Time of the power play goal, 13.27 for Fairburn, second of the night.
- 2:22:23Number four of the playoffs, you, I believe, get an idea of what is happening here in Madison Square
- 2:22:30Garden, you can hear the crowd, they are going berserk at this moment. Rangers right back in
- 2:22:37the hockey game, one of the keys, Sal, has been more ice time for Nick Beverly, he has really
- 2:22:43settled things down. He has, Bob, he's a steady defenseman, he's even been gambling in this
- 2:22:49second period, he penetrated deep with the Middleton play, he was on the ice with Middleton through
- 2:22:54the playoff. Here's the face, controlled by the Rangers, Mark DeMevely, Beverly up to the center,
- 2:23:00Beverly slaps it in, left side of Billy Smith, he comes out to clear, battered down by Gilberto
- 2:23:04at the near side, throws to the corner to Raquel, Raquel stuck in with the play, score! Vickers,
- 2:23:09put it in, and we're tied at three.
- 2:23:11Steve Vickers, slamming it from the top of the night at his favorite position, as he took that pass with the two, and that time back there.
- 2:23:39And the Rangers have tied it at three. And Roger Bear, keeping the puck in his own, Jerry Hart,
- 2:23:46trying to clear it, Gilberto battered it down and up, waist level, got it to Raquel, and John Raquel,
- 2:23:54so fancy, just walked out perfectly, Potsdam was unable to tie Vickers up, Vickers had it open
- 2:24:00there to put the puck into, and the island has to be taken now. It was three, they played a terrific hockey game,
- 2:24:07the first goal that the Rangers got sparked them, the penalty on a great play by Middleton kept it going,
- 2:24:13the great pass by Vickers, and a great all-around effort by the entire line to tie it up.
- 2:24:18So the guy who really has to be thinking is gold medalist Billy Smith, who was so brilliant over the first goal,
- 2:24:24and now in big trouble with the Rangers on fire, they've tied it at three, they can prove a pace through
- 2:24:30past Goodshead, a battle for across the island, Vickers and Cochran come together, and Lundman makes the touch,
- 2:24:37we got a whistle for Isaac Gilberto, from his half of the ice, across the goal line. We have six minutes,
- 2:24:44nine seconds remaining, third period, and the Rangers and islanders are now tied at three, three.
- 2:24:52That second Ranger goal, fabled from Vickers and Park, 13.27, and 14 seconds later,
- 2:24:59it is Vickers on the face-off, controlled by the Rangers, Joe Bad, he starts up, the center,
- 2:25:06and puts it in the break, Gracie all over, pins it in, now Truen comes along, and they combine to freeze it,
- 2:25:13so players stop. Billy Faber from Steve Vickers and Brad Park at 13.27, and 14 seconds later,
- 2:25:20it's Vickers from Rotel and Drew Bad at 13.21, the hand for the Rotel line as they depart.
- 2:25:27And Bob Jackman came up with two key saves when the players killed Villamur at 14.04,
- 2:25:33and then they did spark them, I don't know, I have to say it was Billy Faber and Solo
- 2:25:37that he put the through to score that first goal, and the fans are yelling Eddie, Eddie right now,
- 2:25:45what a hockey game, we couldn't ask for anything more climatic than this,
- 2:25:49anti-climatic, getting into sudden death situation, sudden death to eliminate a team from the playoffs.
- 2:25:55Face-off coming up at center, Kachuk on with Irvin and Faber, and Marat Greshner are back going
- 2:26:04against the Bourne-Harris-Billy's line, on the face-off, Marat controlled, back past Greshner,
- 2:26:09this third period has been all Rangers ahead, Faber, Faber slides it ahead for Kachuk, bumped off the play,
- 2:26:15Bourne is after it, looks to clear off, he cannot, and now does, that's the center, the winning here is
- 2:26:19Marat Harris, but a slant save made by Gokkonen, Bourne keeps it alive, back past Gilly, Gilly slides it right
- 2:26:28down to Gokkonen, Marat is after it now, Marat goes ahead for Kachuk, Kachuk up to center,
- 2:26:34leaves Irvin on the left, he's across the outer line, puts on the brakes, makes the turn, and slaps wide,
- 2:26:40on the rebound, Greshner takes it to the right, turns and slaps, stick to the side by Lewis,
- 2:26:45Gills into the corner at the far side, Irvin is after it, loses to Marchal, winds it around the board,
- 2:26:50gets in though at the near side by Faber, comes it back behind the net, round around by Marchal,
- 2:26:55and further all the way down by Gillies, the out of this desperate club right now, once again,
- 2:27:01racing for one track to make the touch, and we get the whistle, one thing in fact for a face-off,
- 2:27:06keeping out of the race, five minutes, one second remaining, third period, Rangers are playing,
- 2:27:12they are sparked up after trailing three-nothing, after being completely unplayed over the first two,
- 2:27:19sensational goal-cunning by Billy Smith, and this game is turned around, Faber twice, and Vickers,
- 2:27:26here on this third period, face-off now coming up left side of the out of the net,
- 2:27:31Sanderson on with Poloson Middleton, on the face-off, Howard concludes, gets it out of the zone,
- 2:27:37Howard and Park come together, Fevelly comes up with a puck ahead for Middleton over the states,
- 2:27:42as recovered by Howard, a lead from Iceberg, after Ranger, back to Howard, it's off his states,
- 2:27:47broken up by Park and the Rangers, start up, Park to center, ground by Iceberg, a lead for Middleton,
- 2:27:52Middleton comes to the corner around Lewis, then Lewis, Nick, checks it away, winds it around the
- 2:27:56board, Poloson cuts it off at the far side, he and Marchal slam each other, Sanderson works free,
- 2:28:01he backhands, save, and it's lead up by Smith, Brad Park could not tee up that shot, as he turned
- 2:28:09around, he had it on the backhand south, still able to get up a pretty good five, a great trouble in
- 2:28:15front of an edge, the Rangers are jumping, they're all over the loose pucks, Billy Faber and Brian
- 2:28:20to the islanders, icing it on the last opportunity, got to three loose pucks, this time Greg Kohler
- 2:28:25going to the loose puck, Sanderson picking up the loose puck to get it out the park,
- 2:28:30Park having it on the backhand, it's still deflected on the way in, and another shot dropping
- 2:28:34right at Billy Smith's feet, face off left side of the islander, that 428th running third period,
- 2:28:39Ratel and Westfall on the draw, loose out the circle, sent back behind the goal, Park is there,
- 2:28:44Park chopped up by Ratel, swings it around the boards, and here's Westfall up to center,
- 2:28:49Westfall then shoots in, it's to the right side of Tocqueville, and he comes out to stop,
- 2:28:53please for Gilbert, now Gilbert back the other way, as the Rangers skate left to right, Gilbert
- 2:28:57to center, tries to lead Ratel, it's too deep, it's across the goal line of the islanders, Park
- 2:29:02bangs it off the board, Rangers deep end, Joe back, Paul Fiske, but it's almost headed by Vickers,
- 2:29:06and intercepted by Westfall, a head to Groen at center, checked off the play by Park,
- 2:29:11sends Vickers in across the islander line, Vickers from the angle, sends in from the
- 2:29:14tail, it's turned around, come down the play, Park comes in, Smith covers it, and we get a whistle, and let's see if there's a penalty at the end, Bruce Hood talking it over with Steve Vickers, Hood started a point, and that held off,
- 2:29:30Rangers were looking for a penalty, and nothing will be gone. Billy Smith ending up with a puck
- 2:29:35outside the crease, and I think that's what Vickers asking about, no Ranger player around,
- 2:29:39Ratel on the ice behind the net, and Smith after recording, I think he was aware of that too, because he
- 2:29:44doubled up, and thought he was in pain to sort of disguise the play. Face off, left side of Smith,
- 2:29:513.51 remaining, third period, tied at three, on the draw, Park goes back behind the net,
- 2:29:57checked by Ratel, leases it for Dennis Buckman, Buckman cuts to the corner, throws it in front of
- 2:30:01his net to Hart, ahead now, Westfall, Snick handles it center, moving on Park, and shoots in, left side of
- 2:30:07Chalk, and he steps behind, but has to stop, and whips it back the other way for Vickers,
- 2:30:11Bill Vickers strips it out of his arm, Puffman after it, along with Ratel, they both over,
- 2:30:15Skate Vickers comes up with it, he's up to be out of the line, back pass now to Hart, goes in,
- 2:30:19and Smith wide, going for the upper left-hand corner, moves around the board, picked off by Westfall,
- 2:30:25Westfall a back pass now for Hart, great opportunity for JoBart, took the good shot,
- 2:30:29but it was just off the mark, here's Hart, up to center, Park sends ahead, and done it for
- 2:30:33Parisi, and JoBart intercepts, all Rangers here in the third period, they are all over the puck,
- 2:30:38Vickers now to center, he's up across the out of the line, cross-sides be broken up by Hart,
- 2:30:43Prickles in front, taken by Couture, back pass for Faburn, broken up, and it's picked off by Marshall,
- 2:30:49Marshall up to center-ice, a lead for Billy Harris on the right, to the Ranger line,
- 2:30:53keeps Beverly, does not go for it, but it's sent back behind the net, Dockerman sweeps it to the
- 2:30:57far side, Marshall hits it behind by Vickers, and Couture puts it free, leaves it free,
- 2:31:02man, Hush, Dockerman back to Beverly, Beverly up to the out of the line, back pass for Couture,
- 2:31:06back the other way it goes for Greshner, Greshner cuts into the slot, he's dumped down the play,
- 2:31:10Wolfson in front, no penalty call, Rangers looking for bounty, a clock call, as Gillies
- 2:31:15cross it all the way down, how those faces look there, Emil Francis dropping up and down on the
- 2:31:20Ranger bench, looking for a penalty call, and with 2.24 remaining of his third period,
- 2:31:25so you get into a situation where unless someone's head is cut off, Greshner is not going to call a penalty.
- 2:31:31But at this particular time, Islanders have had two penalties already this period,
- 2:31:35what continuous action the Rangers are putting on, continuous pressure in that Islander, and the Islanders
- 2:31:41devise the puck at least four times in the last three or four minutes.
- 2:31:45This is W.A.W., Metcomedia Radio in New York, 11.30 on the bag, by the number of
- 2:31:52players that will stand to see them in a beauty here in this third and final game of the best
- 2:31:58two out of three between the New York Rangers and the New York Islanders, what will go down as a memorable series.
- 2:32:04Side of three right here, on the face, Fairburn, back hands it's blocked, taken off by Harris,
- 2:32:09of the Islanders, sends to center, and it's intercepted by Marat, makes skates to the ranger line,
- 2:32:14ahead of Harris to Greshner, Greshner to his end, left side of the Islander net, Billy Smith makes the
- 2:32:19left step and leaves for Lewis, he's checked behind the goal, back and shoot, winds it around
- 2:32:23now for Bourne, Bourne loses to Fairburn, Fairburn looks to set up, puts in front, knocked away,
- 2:32:29shot on goal by Coutuque goes wide, and Billy Harris picks up the loose puck, Harris to center,
- 2:32:34Harris up to the ranger line, Harris cuts left, checked by Greshner, Coutuque comes up with the puck,
- 2:32:39Coutuque's spinning, a drop for Fairburn, Fairburn to center, hit the behind by Bourne, a leap for
- 2:32:44Urban and across the Islander line, cuts to the goal line, he's checked down the play by Marshall,
- 2:32:49a battle in front between Fairburn and Hart, as Greshner works it free, winds it around the boards,
- 2:32:54but it's about a half a minute third for it, forward after that center, but he is stopped by Greshner,
- 2:32:59Greshner works it free, he's jumped on the play, well, penalty called, but Coutuque takes it away,
- 2:33:04back pass for the run, sends to Vickers, Vickers in across the Islander line, loses on a stick check,
- 2:33:10and Vickers back for it now as he comes back to the ranger line, a hit and tenor for Moran,
- 2:33:15and a sub to by Marshall, leads Parisi, Parisi checked by Greshner, sends it ahead though for Bruin,
- 2:33:20Bruin breaks in, loses on a stick check to Moran, Bruin takes it back, tries to wheel it around the boards,
- 2:33:26but it's broken up by Vickers with one hit at the end, hit the third for it,
- 2:33:29it's down to center, leads Gough there, to there, and across the Islander line, back pass, Vickers goes in,
- 2:33:34see it made by Smith, on that front that was laid on, off the stick of Steve Vickers, now Parisi to center,
- 2:33:40ahead it goes to Bruin, Bruin, pass intercepted by Devaly, Devaly banks it off the board,
- 2:33:44center pop and takes it back, 40 seconds remaining for Curry, side of three, a hit for Hart, and he jumps it in,
- 2:33:50picked up by Bruin, a leap for Westphal, it's too deep, Westphal there, covers it, the side of the ranger net,
- 2:33:54looks to center, it's knocked away, we got a whistle as the puck is pinned in, at the far side,
- 2:33:59half way or stuff, give it back, with 32 seconds remaining, this is sudden death south,
- 2:34:05because we're tied at three, face off coming up now deep, and Ranger Ice, of course, if they conclude at 3-3,
- 2:34:13it will go to a true sudden death overtime.
- 2:34:16Come off, Abel Francis putting Derek Sanderson out, the face off is in, the ranger in,
- 2:34:21he runs his best face off man there, the crowd chanting, he hits a big face off right now for the Rangers,
- 2:34:28he can win it, take control of the puck, and it'll be André Saint Laurent from the out of the
- 2:34:35Derrick Sanderson for the Rangers facing left side, on Ed Jockemet, the linesman,
- 2:34:38Ray Scampanello drops it, loose at the far side, picked up by the out of the Saint Laurent,
- 2:34:43drives it in front, knocked away by Jockemet out of the stick of Park, 25 seconds remaining,
- 2:34:48Park ahead for Sanderson, Sanderson to center, leaves Butler, got the pass after it,
- 2:34:52carries all the way down across the goal line, OIC Club, Butler gets it off to Sanderson with 15 seconds,
- 2:34:57looks to get it to Park at the right point, broken up by Howitt, 10 seconds remaining,
- 2:35:01Howitt shoots it off to center to Nicegram, Nicegram checked on the play by Urban and Nuts,
- 2:35:05at 3 with 5 seconds, he's to the out of the line, the loosest control that is popping ahead for Howitt,
- 2:35:09Howitt at the ranger line, breaks wide as the buzzer sound, and that's the end of the third period,
- 2:35:14and we go to overtime, we go to overtime, we'll have the usual 15 minute intermission,
- 2:35:24and then we're at two overtime with the rangers coming from behind,
- 2:35:28trailing 3-0, scoring three times in this third period to tie it up,
- 2:35:34so at the end of three, the score, the ranger's three, the islander's three, we'll be back in a moment.
- 2:35:41Now here's a word from America's oldest lager beer.
- 2:36:04Did you know that the Shaffer people are the oldest and most experienced lager brewers in America?
- 2:36:09It takes experience to brew any fine beer, but it's taken a little bit more experience to brew Shaffer,
- 2:36:15the one beer found enough to give you flavor that never fades.
- 2:36:19If you'd like to experience the result of all that brewing experience,
- 2:36:23all you gotta do is give a couple of frosty cold Shaffers a try.
- 2:36:28The F&M Shaffer Brewing Company, New York, New York.
- 2:36:45In the third period, all rangers, they outshot the islanders 14 to 4,
- 2:36:52and overall after three periods, rangers with 40 shots at Billy Smith,
- 2:37:00and the islanders with 25 with the combination of Joe Villamur and Ed Jockeman.
- 2:37:04Jockeman came on for Villamur at 14-0-4 of the second period, and Eddie all sparked up.
- 2:37:12No question about it, it had much to do with the rangers turning it around,
- 2:37:17and coming from the three-cent deficit to tie it at three.
- 2:37:22In the third period, it was Fairburn on a tremendous individual effort,
- 2:37:27starting at Christina Rice, the deep part of service,
- 2:37:31and he cut through the entire islander squad and was able to beat Billy Smith.
- 2:37:37Tremendous individual effort.
- 2:37:39Fairburn from Kachurka and Greschner at 4-4-4, and then on a power play,
- 2:37:44with Hardoff for hooking at 12-47.
- 2:37:47Fairburn, again, set up by Vickers and Clark at 13-27.
- 2:37:52And then only 14 seconds later, at 13-41, Rattelle,
- 2:37:57put it in front of Vickers and his slanted home pass spent.
- 2:38:00So it was Vickers from Rattelle until Fair at 13-41.
- 2:38:06Rattelle in the second, Howard for a trip at 13-49, and then Hardoff for hooking at 12-47.
- 2:38:14So the rangers had the islanders of time at 3-3.
- 2:38:19We have the customary intermission period.
- 2:38:24And then Rattelle, the other time, and Rattelle, right on the button,
- 2:38:27and on the subject of that very hard penalty when he was hit with the hook at 12-47,
- 2:38:32the rangers were down 3-1, and if there was any shot at all of the rangers coming back,
- 2:38:37as you said, it would have to be then, and if they went back down, that is the situation.
- 2:38:42That's right, Bob. I think, don't worry, I located Dunk.
- 2:38:45We're going to have him on in between the second and third, second, second and third, Bob,
- 2:38:49running around to get somebody, and old Dunk Wilson, the old Dunk,
- 2:38:53and he was on the pregame show. He's on after the game.
- 2:38:56How can we ask? I don't know what Dunk is going to do with all these Sonys
- 2:38:59and gift certificates that he is collecting.
- 2:39:03Dunk almost ended his goaltending career just now in climbing back in the broadcast location.
- 2:39:09We are tied at 3. We will go to overtime.
- 2:39:13Rangers and islanders at 3-3, and Sal will be talking with Ranger goaltender Dunk Wilson in just a moment.
- 2:39:20And look at the scoreboard. Chicago beat Boston 6-4, so they take that series two games to one.
- 2:39:26Later tonight, Toronto at L.A., they are underway on the first period,
- 2:39:30and we don't have anything for the four and a halfs of the series, top one-one,
- 2:39:33and of course Pittsburgh to St. Louis, two games to nothing.
- 2:39:37ABA playoffs in St. Louis, the Nets over the Spurs, 113-108.
- 2:39:44Let me check out that score. I'm going to have to check that out.
- 2:39:51After three Memphis 79, Kentucky 70. I have to check that score out because we have a discrepancy,
- 2:39:59and I see it the other way around on another part of the sheet.
- 2:40:03Utah leading Denver 10375 after three.
- 2:40:07Track right after this one.
- 2:40:09Does this one go up Madison Avenue?
- 2:40:11That's what the sign says, lady.
- 2:40:13One Margaret Martin on a bus ride.
- 2:40:16Why did I take?
- 2:40:17Hope that the rear of the bus plays. Come on.
- 2:40:21She's spending half her lunch money going to the bank to put money in her savings account.
- 2:40:25Little did she realize that she can save her the bank right around the corner.
- 2:40:29Manufacturers handle her.
- 2:40:31They not only offer high interest, they offer a lot more.
- 2:40:35They have over 170 branches, so she can have close to her job, close to her home,
- 2:40:41close to wherever she happens to be.
- 2:40:43She can make deposits wherever the spirit is.
- 2:40:46She can have a checking account to go with her savings account,
- 2:40:50and a card that lets her cash her check at any manufacturer's handover branch.
- 2:40:54If Margaret Martin saved at manufacturer's handover, she could spend her lunch hour having lunch.
- 2:41:01Traffic.
- 2:41:02Let me get back to work on that.
- 2:41:04Manufacturers' handover. It's banking the way you want it to be.
- 2:41:08Remember FDIC.
- 2:41:10Down the street, back at Madison Square Garden.
- 2:41:14Regulation time over. The score, Rangers 3, Islanders 3.
- 2:41:18Islanders with a 3-0 lead coming into the third period.
- 2:41:22The Rangers with three goals, two by Billy Faburn, one by Steve Vickers.
- 2:41:27The last two coming 14 seconds apart to tie the hockey game.
- 2:41:32My guest, Dunk Wilson.
- 2:41:34Dunk, did you ever see a period like that in all your years of hockey?
- 2:41:37If you did, tell me, but that's the best any I've ever seen.
- 2:41:40Well, only in my first year of pro. We tied one up in the fifth game of first book finals.
- 2:41:45One second to go in a game and beat them in overtime.
- 2:41:48But this one here is a lot different. This is for more money.
- 2:41:52And to come back from three goals when the Islanders were sort of controlling things that looked like,
- 2:41:56I'll tell you, my heart is going about 180th minute right now. It's just amazing.
- 2:42:01I'm just, you know, what can you say? It's the most amazing experience I've ever seen.
- 2:42:05We controlled.
- 2:42:07Eddie came in, I think the one thing he did when he got in there,
- 2:42:12when he came in and started that pipe, maybe he had to get himself into the game after sitting on the bench.
- 2:42:17Maybe loose some of the guys up, they figured, well, let's get the old fellow going and let's go from there.
- 2:42:22It was in between periods there and everybody seemed wired and let's go.
- 2:42:26And we've got nothing to lose because we don't want to go golf the next week.
- 2:42:29So everybody's out there giving the best shot.
- 2:42:32Well, we've got momentum going for us now, so let's keep our fingers crossed and let's hope we can go the same way.
- 2:42:38Doug, we talked on the broadcast describing the game.
- 2:42:42You look at turning point, maybe a couple of good saves, Jocelyn made right after he went in there.
- 2:42:46He made a good kick save on a shot from the point and then Nice from, I think, was all alone on it.
- 2:42:50And Billy Fabarn skating through the entire Island with the team to score that goal.
- 2:42:54What do you say is that the one thing that maybe turned them around?
- 2:42:58Well, I think actually the turning point of the game is my opinion.
- 2:43:01Well, being a goaltender maybe was the deal that Eddie got it through.
- 2:43:05Now, you've got to give Eddie a lot of credit for that, as I was just saying before.
- 2:43:08He's got to get himself in the game.
- 2:43:10When you see a goalkeeper in trouble, everybody gets a little excited because they know what their man heard.
- 2:43:14I think those two goals right off the bat, I knew it as soon as those happened.
- 2:43:19We had a lot of time left for one goal.
- 2:43:21We had the pressure on the whole time.
- 2:43:23The turning point was maybe the constant pressure we got on Smith all night.
- 2:43:27We played excellent hockey, you can't take anything away from Billy Smith.
- 2:43:32But once we got those two goals, you could see the Island was maybe with inexperience,
- 2:43:36they turned around a bit, lose their cool.
- 2:43:38And that's what happened because of our experience, maybe being in the right spot at the right time.
- 2:43:44And thank God we tied it up.
- 2:43:46Doug, on the power play the Rangers had, it was 7.15 or 7.13, I guess, left on the clock when the Rangers had that power play.
- 2:43:56I mentioned that they had a score then.
- 2:43:58But Vickers making the pass to Faber, it was a play where he just sort of just waited, waited.
- 2:44:04But Brad Punk threw the puck into him right away as soon as he got it out of the point rather than shooting.
- 2:44:09What would you rather have, as a goalcenter, you'd rather take that quick shot in a situation like that?
- 2:44:14Or do you think Brad made, I thought Brad made a super play by doing that, by giving the puck to Vickers right away?
- 2:44:19Oh, there's no doubt about it.
- 2:44:21I mean, Brad was the shooter.
- 2:44:23At least the goalcenter could see what's happening.
- 2:44:25The puck has come in like it has.
- 2:44:26You don't know where the late men are because, as you say, you have to watch the puck.
- 2:44:30So Smith is playing the puck, right?
- 2:44:32He's playing Stevie.
- 2:44:33He doesn't know what's going on behind him unless he's got a third eye, which we don't know about.
- 2:44:37But of course, by the time he looks over, it's too late.
- 2:44:40The puck's already in the net.
- 2:44:42Billy Turbin made a great play because he picked it out of the air and kind of ran up from the top shelf.
- 2:44:46I mean, it was just a great play by Billy.
- 2:44:48He was having a great series.
- 2:44:50He scored a couple last night, too.
- 2:44:52That's things like this that I'm saying.
- 2:44:55It's just that experience.
- 2:44:56Maybe a little bit of extra now with the momentum.
- 2:44:58Who knows?
- 2:44:59But it's a funny thing.
- 2:45:00In overtime games I've played and seen, it's usually not a very good goal that wins overtime games.
- 2:45:06It's going to be a funny one.
- 2:45:07Who knows?
- 2:45:08It's going to be a re-bound or a kick in or a deflection or something.
- 2:45:13It's going to be very interesting to see what happens.
- 2:45:16I don't know.
- 2:45:17I'm just so charged right now.
- 2:45:19I don't know.
- 2:45:20I'm just off for words at this time.
- 2:45:22I just pray that things happen right for us.
- 2:45:25You talk about overtime goals.
- 2:45:27Last year the Rangers were involved in the first game of the quarterfinals in Montreal.
- 2:45:31Ron Harris just put in a shot right off the point.
- 2:45:34Right off the face of the couch to Harris, to Boulpède, to Michel O'Rourke.
- 2:45:39A couple of years back, exactly what year, Peterson Couchie won a game here.
- 2:45:44Then it went into the second overtime.
- 2:45:46That ended up at 11.59 on the clock.
- 2:45:48That game started at 7 o'clock, I believe, or 7.30.
- 2:45:51You talk about the weird goals.
- 2:45:53Those two that I can recall were good goals.
- 2:45:56Have I just talked about any overtime periods?
- 2:45:58Have we had any flukes scored on you or maybe by your team?
- 2:46:03I've been sort of fortunate.
- 2:46:05The only time I've played any overtime goals or been in a situation where overtime goals were scored by our team.
- 2:46:13The one time when I was playing with Quebec, we scored a one-second goal to tie it up.
- 2:46:19The goal of the score against us was just a flippant shot of a weird bounce that went by on your record.
- 2:46:24It's just one of those things that happen.
- 2:46:26I think maybe with Eddie he's going to be here tonight.
- 2:46:29He's got the little maybe experienced thing on now.
- 2:46:31Billy Smith's a little down himself.
- 2:46:33You can see him when they scored the third goal, he didn't get up.
- 2:46:36He's got to be feeling some kind of tension.
- 2:46:38A little momentum is going for us, but who knows?
- 2:46:41I don't know. What can you say, Sal?
- 2:46:44We'll find out very shortly.
- 2:46:46I don't want to stay here all night.
- 2:46:48I'd like to get back and just get ready for whatever's going to happen from now on.
- 2:46:52I guess we won't know that until later on.
- 2:46:54I think the boys will come through.
- 2:46:57Rangers defenseman, Nick Beverly came on to play the third period.
- 2:47:01Nick, a man who hasn't been given credit throughout the season.
- 2:47:05He's just a quiet player, just unassuming.
- 2:47:07Does his job.
- 2:47:08He was a goal tender, I'm sure, noter, sir.
- 2:47:11Many of the fine things that Nick Beverly does.
- 2:47:13Well, I've known Nick for a long time.
- 2:47:15I played junior with Nick at one point.
- 2:47:17As you say, he's quite an unassuming man.
- 2:47:20He goes out, he does his job.
- 2:47:22He's quite underrated.
- 2:47:24I mean, if you're going to trade a fellow away like Vic Hadfield in New York,
- 2:47:28the scouts have to know what's going on.
- 2:47:30They know that Nick Beverly is not such a poor hockey player.
- 2:47:34They know he has something going.
- 2:47:35Nick played very well that period.
- 2:47:37He's got his goal in.
- 2:47:38What can you say about Ronnie Gressner?
- 2:47:40He's a 20-year-old kid who's out there like he's been around here for 20 years.
- 2:47:43He forced the puck, he kept it in a couple of times.
- 2:47:46I think the thing that is the key to the third period for us there was our corner work.
- 2:47:50We just beat him to the puck all the time.
- 2:47:52We got hungry.
- 2:47:53It was something we weren't really doing a lot well in the first two periods.
- 2:47:56The way it's going now, I think it'll be strong in the corners again,
- 2:48:00and I think it'll work out good for us.
- 2:48:02That's all I can say, you know.
- 2:48:03Plus the defenseman, we're getting a puck up and keeping it in low.
- 2:48:06We've always got a man coming back now.
- 2:48:08Everything is going so well.
- 2:48:10It's hard to believe that we can't win this game.
- 2:48:13You think the range of defensemen will be going in as deep,
- 2:48:15but in the offensive zone as they did in the third period,
- 2:48:18now that it's a tie hockey game rather than trying to come from behind.
- 2:48:21I think they will.
- 2:48:23I can't see them sitting back and trying to play sort of giddy by the door hockey
- 2:48:27and hope for an open break, because that's going to give the Iowa's a chance to regroup maybe.
- 2:48:31We've got the pressure on them right now.
- 2:48:33We've got everything going for us, the psych, the advantage over them in that.
- 2:48:37So I think you've got to go out.
- 2:48:38Over time, you have to go all out, because you just don't make any mistakes.
- 2:48:42If you do, the game is over.
- 2:48:43You just got to keep going and plugging and hoping you can get the first shot on that,
- 2:48:46because who knows, the most shots sometimes come over in pure hockey.
- 2:48:50Like it was decided by the host shots on that.
- 2:48:52So you have to go all out, and over time, there's no second chance.
- 2:48:56You just have to keep going and hope something works out for you.
- 2:48:59And I think we'll be going right off the bat.
- 2:49:01I think the cattle say, where you go, boys?
- 2:49:03We're going to let you know.
- 2:49:04It's up to you, and let's go.
- 2:49:06Doug Wilson, thanks very much for coming up here.
- 2:49:08I'm glad we, uh, we corraled you to come up and start curating the other things.
- 2:49:13Okay, thanks.
- 2:49:14I like it a little bit, walking through the corridor, and I hope I hear the good cheer.
- 2:49:18You're getting a lot of work on your hands.
- 2:49:19You look like a little doctor to us.
- 2:49:21Bob?
- 2:49:22Oak Phelps, we'll be back on in just a moment.
- 2:49:25The officials have hit the ice.
- 2:49:27As, uh, with the Pardigalto sub-depth overtime, 30 minutes or less.
- 2:49:32Upcoming in just a moment with the Rangers and the Outlanders tied at 3-3.
- 2:49:37And, oh, the cheering we've been hearing tonight, and I think the sign of proud is really up
- 2:49:42for themselves.
- 2:49:43I've met a lot of these folks who are just absolutely cheerful.
- 2:49:45They'll probably wake up cheerful tomorrow.
- 2:49:47That is, if they get a good night's sleep.
- 2:49:49And you know that it's hard to get if you happen to go to bed with a headache and can't sleep.
- 2:49:54The answer, take Excedrin PM.
- 2:49:57The nighttime pain reliever.
- 2:49:59Excedrin PM.
- 2:50:00Relief setting and extension helps you relax and put back the good-sleeping, good-wake-up
- 2:50:04feeling refreshed with no fogginess.
- 2:50:07Of course, you take Excedrin PM only as directed.
- 2:50:11And imagine feeling like that in the morning, even if you have a headache tonight.
- 2:50:15Excedrin PM.
- 2:50:16We'll be back in a moment.
- 2:50:18Alka Seltzer brings you a message from the old one, too.
- 2:50:21So you're in the car, and there, there, will carry to the wheel.
- 2:50:26Just close your eyes.
- 2:50:28Try to forget those lumpy pancakes in your stomach.
- 2:50:31We'll be right there with the Alka too.
- 2:50:34Alka Seltzer, we're not getting any.
- 2:50:39For aches and pains with upset stomach, use Alka Seltzer with specially buffered Asperin
- 2:50:43and Tauxanthesis.
- 2:50:44That's exactly as directed.
- 2:50:51Live over with Sal Massina back at Madison Square Garden.
- 2:50:54Now we have that net score straight down.
- 2:50:57Samoa Spurts beat the New York.
- 2:50:59That's 113.108.
- 2:51:01I didn't even surprise the Spurts.
- 2:51:05And both in front of the New York, that's two games to one.
- 2:51:09Rangers and Idlers are back on, and Jockerman will be going right, and Smith, two all up
- 2:51:15side.
- 2:51:16Oh, we can talk about sudden death in a hockey game.
- 2:51:19This is sudden death in a series.
- 2:51:22Extra pressure, at least if it were just a playoff game, or just a, this is a playoff
- 2:51:26game, but if it was an early round, early game in a seven game series, they'd still
- 2:51:30have the next game to come back after you're defeated.
- 2:51:33This one, you, the team who scores the first goal goes on to play.
- 2:51:39Whoever, and we'll work that out if it's at the end of the hockey game.
- 2:51:43The team that is scored upon goes home to make the team again for the tournament.
- 2:51:49And on a terrible at par, and Drew Bruin on the somebody face off at center-right.
- 2:51:55Pressure packed hockey right now.
- 2:51:57Rangers will stand right to left.
- 2:51:59Idlers left to right.
- 2:52:00Referee Bruin so drops the puck, and on the draw, it is taken by Burt Markle.
- 2:52:04Cross-ice table as he shoots in.
- 2:52:06Left side of Jockerman, Bickers chases down on the corner.
- 2:52:09Bruin shoots and, but score!
- 2:52:12It's deflected in by Parise from in front of it.
- 2:52:16And the Islanders in overtime in the first 11 seconds are defeated by the New York Rangers
- 2:52:24by the score of four, three.
- 2:52:26And the Islanders are on the ice, out to each other.
- 2:52:29They have come up with a tremendous upset victory over the New York Rangers.
- 2:52:35And this game has just concluded to quiet the crowd here at Madison Square Garden.
- 2:52:42And that is most unusual, Sal.
- 2:52:44When you go to overtime, you do not expect that type of ending.
- 2:52:48And for the Rangers, it has to be embarrassing.
- 2:52:51They did jump from behind.
- 2:52:52They were coming clean.
- 2:52:53They were able to tie it at three and three.
- 2:52:57But the embarrassment is in facing the New York Islanders.
- 2:53:02For the first time in playoff competition, they are able to come away with the victory.
- 2:53:08And this playoff series, Juggamster won, and they do it on a go by Parise at the 11th second mark.
- 2:53:17And a great hustling play by Jhu.
- 2:53:19Bruin to go into that corner.
- 2:53:20He and Bickers went in.
- 2:53:22Bickers not playing a bounce off the board.
- 2:53:24Right, Bruin got it and Bruin in front.
- 2:53:27Islanders win it, Mob.
- 2:53:28And a really dejected Ranger Hockey Club skating off the ice right now.
- 2:53:33They're making the shaking hands out at the center ice, as they customarily do on a playoff series.
- 2:53:40Islanders, wow, they are happy bunch right now.
- 2:53:43And they should be, because when you consider the fact that they were so severely outplayed
- 2:53:49in the third perimeter, that old man Fenton going the Ranger way, threading three nothing,
- 2:53:56coming back to tie it at three and three.
- 2:53:59And the two goals by Fairburn and the one goal by Bickers.
- 2:54:02It was Rangers all the way in the third.
- 2:54:05And the three will come around, punch drop.
- 2:54:08Islanders take the face off.
- 2:54:10Bruin taking it out of the corner, flipping it in front of the net.
- 2:54:15And JP Parisi, who was much better than that, was able to jam it past Chalkamon.
- 2:54:22And that's the story for the 74-75 season for the New York Rangers.
- 2:54:27Brad Clark with the man doing the crunching.
- 2:54:29The Rangers down three nothing coming into the third period.
- 2:54:33Fought back to tie it and they could have won it.
- 2:54:35Mob, they had some opportunities right in the hockey game.
- 2:54:38They had the Islanders on the ropes, did not capitalize.
- 2:54:41But they, that 15 minute time, the Islanders settled them down,
- 2:54:46gave them time to regroup themselves.
- 2:54:49They came out strong, they won the face off, shot it in,
- 2:54:52Bruin going in, winning the race for the puck and throwing it out in front.
- 2:54:56And as you look back at the 74-75 season for the Rangers,
- 2:55:00it has to be a huge disappointment.
- 2:55:04It does, Mob. They had the players at training camp and they were very, very optimistic.
- 2:55:10They did run into some injuries.
- 2:55:11They just geeked out on the next to the last day of the season
- 2:55:14when the Islanders lost to Philadelphia on a Saturday night.
- 2:55:18They clinched second place.
- 2:55:19They could not win the game on Sunday night, which would have put them actually ahead of Pittsburgh.
- 2:55:23And Pittsburgh also lost.
- 2:55:26Tying with the Islanders for second place.
- 2:55:28The Islanders in their third season.
- 2:55:29The Rangers in the staffer, Jackie Furman, now in the playoffs.
- 2:55:33They lose two games on their whole heist.
- 2:55:35If you think about it, those last two weeks of the season,
- 2:55:37Rangers were fighting for their playoff lives and also for home-race advantage,
- 2:55:41which meant absolutely nothing in this two-out-of-three series.
- 2:55:45And really, when you look over the last several weeks of the season,
- 2:55:50the Rangers were not an injured hockey club.
- 2:55:52The only injured player was down, Rob.
- 2:55:56Was down was Miss. Defense was the problem with this team.
- 2:56:00They were in and out of hockey club.
- 2:56:01They really won big games, particularly down the stretch.
- 2:56:06They did not beat the quality teams.
- 2:56:08They were hoping to rescue the season with a good performance during the playoffs.
- 2:56:13And, of course, had they done well in the playoffs,
- 2:56:17people would forget about the regular season.
- 2:56:20As it turns out, the Rangers are eliminated in this opening round.
- 2:56:24And now people will not forget about the regular season.
- 2:56:28They will try to start rebuilding this year with, of course,
- 2:56:31breast-wrap being brought up after the ceiling was traded.
- 2:56:35Rick Middleton giving the opportunity to play.
- 2:56:37He missed quite a few games because of an injury.
- 2:56:39These are young players of the future.
- 2:56:41I know Dave Maloney had a fairly successful year down in Providence.
- 2:56:44He's the number one draft choice of the Rangers, an 18-year-old underage junior.
- 2:56:49However, he received, he got a couple of injuries throughout the season with Providence.
- 2:56:54And Imo Francis is a little concerned about the, about him being susceptible to injury.
- 2:56:59Did they ever announce that last goal?
- 2:57:01I don't think so.
- 2:57:02Parisi and Druen, one of the island of the defensemen actually shot the puck in.
- 2:57:06I guess they could have credited a sister here,
- 2:57:08but right now nothing that the island is already worried about.
- 2:57:13We're calling it unofficially from our vantage point.
- 2:57:17Parisi, the last goal from Druen at the 11th second half,
- 2:57:21but it was never officially announced.
- 2:57:24Still on the board is the final score.
- 2:57:28Rangers 3, 1949 remaining in the game,
- 2:57:33which indicates that the goal was scored at the 11th second mark,
- 2:57:37and Islanders 4.
- 2:57:39Now that's the story in sudden death overtime.
- 2:57:42Coincidentally, North McLean of the Rangers staff dropped by to point out that back in 1937,
- 2:57:50in the days of the rivalry of the old New York Americans and the New York Rangers,
- 2:57:55in a upset in overtime, in fact in the third overtime,
- 2:58:00the Americans won a best two out of three playoff series by the score of 3-2.
- 2:58:07That's rather ironic, really.
- 2:58:11Islanders did way three all the time, just 11 seconds, really unbelievable.
- 2:58:15I bet many participants coming back to sit in their seats are going for refreshments between periods,
- 2:58:21but if they could come back to their seat, the goal was scored.
- 2:58:25Okay, that final score once again.
- 2:58:27Sal will be up coming with a complete wrap up on the first game show.
- 2:58:31In sudden death overtime, the New York Rangers season has ended.
- 2:58:36The New York Islanders beating the New York Rangers by the score of 4-3.
- 2:58:40Now the Islanders will open up on Sunday.
- 2:58:46Let's see what the situation is right now.
- 2:58:49Chicago has defeated Boston 6-4.
- 2:58:52The Islanders will open up the best four out of seven series this Sunday against...
- 2:58:57Very good, Mark.
- 2:58:59They will not play Buffalo.
- 2:59:01They will play Montreal if LA wins.
- 2:59:05In Montreal, they will play Pittsburgh if Toronto wins that game between Toronto and LA out on the West Coast.
- 2:59:12So they will not know who or whether will be playing until the competition tonight is concluded.
- 2:59:19Toronto playing at LA this evening, and that's the game that they must look at.
- 2:59:25That's right, Mom, and of course they can't make their arrangements until about 3 o'clock in the morning when that score comes in,
- 2:59:31starting at about 11 o'clock hour time. Well, it started an hour ago.
- 2:59:35Chicago with an upset over Boston 6-4.
- 2:59:38At the start of this 1974-75 National Hockey League season,
- 2:59:43not too many people would have figured that the Boston Brawns and the New York Rangers would be eliminated
- 2:59:49in what has to be considered the preliminary rounds of the playoffs.
- 2:59:53Incredible. Bobby's all going home early. Unbelievable.
- 2:59:57Along with his Boston Brawns and of course the New York Rangers,
- 3:00:02I see the president of the New York Outlanders, Roy Bowe, a very happy man to our left.
- 3:00:09And he's got to figure out what travel plans will be the next couple of days. Really incredible.
- 3:00:15And for Outlander fans, we suggest, as we have the last couple of weeks,
- 3:00:20you have a partner, nobody's having up on the deck, you'll have local newspapers tomorrow,
- 3:00:25and you'll know where the New York Outlanders will be playing on Sunday as they open up the playoff series.
- 3:00:30Well, that's about it.
- 3:00:32Tonight's game brought to you by Schaefer Beer, by Bristol Myers,
- 3:00:35makers of Opel Vans, Superdrive, by Miles Laboratories,
- 3:00:38makers of Alka-Seltzer, and by American Motors.
- 3:00:42Thanks to our engineer, Joey Elmer, our statistician, the bullet, Bob Meyer.
- 3:00:48As far as our Knick and Ranger play-by-play broadcasts are concerned here on WNEW,
- 3:00:54the Knicks can beat the Rockets in Houston tomorrow afternoon
- 3:00:58for the talk with you from Boston on Monday night
- 3:01:03to bring you game number one on the New York Knicks and the Boston Celtics.
- 3:01:07If the Rockets beat the Knicks tomorrow afternoon, we have concluded our winter spring play-by-play schedule.
- 3:01:15Sal, again, despite all your personal problems,
- 3:01:18I've got a delight to work with you.
- 3:01:22I hope you'll be feeling better in a couple of days when all the pressure is lifted.
- 3:01:27Bob, it's always a pleasure working with you.
- 3:01:30I've had a lot of fun throughout the year.
- 3:01:32I'm pretty concerned.
- 3:01:34A couple of things I meant, a couple of things I kidded about.
- 3:01:38For Sal Vecino, this is Bob Albert for Madison Square Garden.
- 3:01:42Now for the postgame here, Sal.
- 3:01:44Thank you, Bob.
- 3:01:45Tonight, a disappointing night for the New York Rangers
- 3:01:48and a very, very happy night for the New York Islanders.
- 3:01:51The Islanders in their third year of playing the National Hockey League,
- 3:01:55defeating the New York Rangers 4-3 at 11 seconds of the first overtime period.
- 3:02:01Islanders winning their preliminary round, three games to two, or two games to one,
- 3:02:06and they will go on to meet either Buffalo or Pittsburgh on Sunday in the quarterfinal round
- 3:02:13for their first actual appearance.
- 3:02:16A great game tonight, fantastic, as you would say.
- 3:02:20The Islanders and Rangers, Billy Smith inserted and goal by Coach Al Arbor,
- 3:02:27played stupendously in the first period.
- 3:02:29It was a spectacular save by Smith throughout.
- 3:02:32As Jack Riley, a scout for the Pittsburgh Penguins and their former general manager said,
- 3:02:36Smith kept him in the hockey game in the first period, and a goaltender does that for a team.
- 3:02:41Billy was called upon to make 15 saves.
- 3:02:44Jill Villamur, who started and goal for the Rangers, was called upon to make 8.
- 3:02:50Bob Gillies, the first goal for the Islanders, his second goal of the playoffs,
- 3:02:55and the 16-minute mark assisted by Bob Bourne and Bert Marshall.
- 3:02:59Marshall stopping the puck at his end, giving it to Bourne.
- 3:03:02A three-on-two develop, ball to Gillies going in the left side,
- 3:03:06and Gillies shooting it between goaltenders, Jill Villamur's legs,
- 3:03:09and the Islanders lead 1-0, although the Rangers outplayed the Islanders in that first period.
- 3:03:13In the second period, Dennis Potvin scoring his first goal in the playoff series at 8.26,
- 3:03:23on a power play.
- 3:03:25He making the play along the corner, outskating both Billy Fairburn and Ron Harris for the puck,
- 3:03:32giving it to Nice, Nice, and headed out to Brother John Potvin at the right point.
- 3:03:36John shooting it in, Dennis deflecting it, Islanders leading 2-0.
- 3:03:40And at 12.51, Dennis Potvin, a shorthanded goal, assisted by Lord Henning.
- 3:03:46Dennis Potvin taking the pass from Henning, going in on Villamur for about 30 feet out of heat.
- 3:03:51Also shot the puck trickling through Villamur's legs, Islanders leading 3-0.
- 3:03:56And at that point, after Villamur, not at that point, but after Villamur made a couple of saves in front of the Ranger net,
- 3:04:04he got up a little shaky, Villamur did hurt his right knee last night.
- 3:04:08And it was replaced by Eddie Jockeman at the 14.04 mark.
- 3:04:11Now penalties in that second period, Howard for holding for the Islanders at 3.36,
- 3:04:15and Billy Fairburn and Dennis Potvin both picked up charging penalties at 5.08.
- 3:04:20Greshner a trip at 6.30. Hart for holding at 11.32.
- 3:04:25Then Butler and Lewis picking up 7 minutes for roughing and fighting.
- 3:04:28Billy Harris for slashing.
- 3:04:30Then what people said was a turning point, Gary Howard, Eddie Jockeman picking up penalties.
- 3:04:36Jockeman 2 minutes for roughing and 2 minutes for cross-checking.
- 3:04:41Gary Howard a roughing penalty. Jockeman a couple of good saves when he replaced Villamur.
- 3:04:46Now he picked up a third man in game mixed conduct on that play and was out for the remainder of the game.
- 3:04:52Scoring stood that way 3-0, Islanders at the end of the second period.
- 3:04:56And the Rangers still had to kill off the penalty, the second penalty to Jockeman early in the third period.
- 3:05:02Billy Fairburn at 4.44, skating through the entire team after picking up the passes from Kachuk and Greshner.
- 3:05:09Deek Billy Smith and that made the score 3-1, Islanders.
- 3:05:13The Rangers coming to within two goals.
- 3:05:17Howard a tripping penalty at 1.39. Hart a penalty at 12.47.
- 3:05:21And at that time we stated the Rangers were going to come back.
- 3:05:24They had a score on that power play opportunity.
- 3:05:27Again, Billy Fairburn, rest, keeping the puck in at the point, throwing a quick little pick
- 3:05:31as Vickers waiting, waiting. Fairburn just moved into the left of Smith.
- 3:05:35The Vickers a beautiful pass. Fairburn throw it up top, 3-2, Islanders.
- 3:05:39Then just 14 seconds later, Steve Vickers after a retell and Jill Baer worked the puck in, keeping it in, throwing it to a retell in the corner.
- 3:05:47The retell working it out to Vickers who stood for the right of Smith.
- 3:05:50Vickers put it in, tying the game up 3-3 and the Rangers with many opportunities seemed to have the Islanders on the ropes.
- 3:05:56However, they could not put it away and the game went into overtime.
- 3:06:00Shot on goal, regulation play. The Rangers had 39, the Islanders had 25.
- 3:06:07The Rangers had 40, the Islanders had 25.
- 3:06:10Then at the 11th second mark, the faceoff, Druin beating Rattal to the faceoff.
- 3:06:15Potvin shooting it in, it deflected off a Ranger player on the way in.
- 3:06:18Eliminating the icing call, Vickers going in, getting his stick on it.
- 3:06:22Tricky Hop throwing that to the puck, threw it right into the crease of Marieke, just put it into the net.
- 3:06:26And the Islanders won the hockey game and the series, two games to one, the hockey game for the Franks.
- 3:06:33And for the Rangers, that about wraps it up.
- 3:06:35They're out, they have to look to training camp next year, they started rebuilding this year.
- 3:06:40There's a possibility they may have some more younger players up next year.
- 3:06:43Jerry Holland had a good year in Providence.
- 3:06:46Maloney, Dave Maloney, their rookie defenseman, aside from a couple of injuries he did incur, also showed signs.
- 3:06:54Elsewhere, International Hockey League preliminary round of the Stanley Cup playoffs,
- 3:06:58Chicago Blackhawks after being defeated by Boston 8-2 on Tuesday night.
- 3:07:03Winning game in overtime, 4-3 on Thursday.
- 3:07:06And tonight in Boston, beating the Boston Bears, 6-4 to take that series.
- 3:07:12And a surprise, and Coach Billy Ray has the Blackhawks moving and a tough hockey club.
- 3:07:18However, an unofficial report, the statistics, shot down goal, Boston at 51, Chicago 18.
- 3:07:26I'll have to see that officially.
- 3:07:28Something that was thrown around up in the press box between periods.
- 3:07:32By the way, that goal by Parisi to give the Islanders a 4-3 victory was an NHL record for the fastest overtime goal ever.
- 3:07:41Island is a happy group.
- 3:07:43They win the hockey game and the series.
- 3:07:45They win the hockey game and they set it 4-3 in the series, two games to one.
- 3:07:48Later on tonight, Toronto is on that run.
- 3:07:50Now the Islanders from here have two possible opponents, so depending upon that Toronto and LA game.
- 3:07:57And the shape-up will go as follows.
- 3:08:01Should Toronto, should LA win that game, the Islanders, the Islanders will play against Montreal.
- 3:08:12It would be Philadelphia against Chicago.
- 3:08:18Pittsburgh against Vancouver.
- 3:08:21Bobby Pepper is in Vancouver.
- 3:08:25Got to figure this one out as we go along.
- 3:08:30And LA.
- 3:08:36LA will also be in.
- 3:08:39With the other victor of the series would be against Pittsburgh.
- 3:08:43Philadelphia, Chicago, LA, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Vancouver, Islanders, Montreal.
- 3:08:49It would be a change if Toronto should win that game.
- 3:08:52Toronto would slip in.
- 3:08:54They would drop to the bottom spot and it would change the entire picture.
- 3:08:57Just for the Islanders' point of view, they either play Montreal, LA win, or play Pittsburgh if Toronto wins.
- 3:09:05Other scores in the NBA playoffs resume tomorrow.
- 3:09:09Nixon used in the third final game, W-A-W at time at 1-20.
