- 0:18I'm Jessica and this is Vivek. He Rambles were couple of
- 0:21friends review Korean dramas and we're back for another episode.
- 0:26We're still in yesteryear and I have with me my two Two, good
- 0:30friends, Kathy and Lauda from the ma 2K podcast.
- 0:33How are you two? So happy to be here?
- 0:39Yes, this is a bit of a reunions.
- 0:41We haven't seen each other since the pH one concert a few weeks
- 0:45ago. And that was so much fun.
- 0:48Yeah. And you guys went all over
- 0:50Orlando like the day after it was like incredible.
- 0:53I don't know. It was literally like we weren't
- 0:56even in Orlando for 24 hours. We went to eat k-pot, we got
- 1:02ready for the concert, went to the concert and then the next
- 1:05day, we left the hotel, like, chucked out when to Kpop and USA
- 1:08and drove back home, like, it was very methodical stop.
- 1:12So we had to make. So we were not even in town for
- 1:1424 hours, we really weren't. I honestly can't believe you did
- 1:18even that much. Sometimes I try and do two
- 1:20things on my list of all. I want to go here when I go
- 1:22there and I don't get to those places and I'm of local.
- 1:25So you know it is what it is. You guys did the deed.
- 1:29It was awesome. You did the thing and we're
- 1:33going to be reviewing Dream High today.
- 1:36And I really wanted you guys to come on this show and
- 1:40particular, review this kdrama because it is very much
- 1:46influenced by the Kpop industry and to be quite honest, this is
- 1:50where I learned a lot about the Kpop industry and the Machine
- 1:56that it is and so on and so forth.
- 1:58So I was like, I have to get to get Have a Kpop podcast was
- 2:01like, oh perfect. And I've joked on, and off about
- 2:05Dream High in multiple episodes, because we've covered other
- 2:11shows from these direct this director, in this screenwriter
- 2:14and this cast. So I'm like, it's a long time

- 3:30There's not stop me. If you want to talk about
- 3:34anything in particular when it comes to some of these other
- 3:36shows that are going to crop up here and some of them we've
- 3:40covered on the podcast. And I know that Lauda has a
- 3:44deeper well of knowledge when it comes to kdramas, but please
- 3:48these people especially the cast list and the producers are all
- 3:53from the Kpop world. So Kathy, if you want to jump in
- 3:55at any point and say your piece on somebody like feel free.
- 4:01Thank you so much for the yes. So, the my drama list synopsis
- 4:07and this is extremely abbreviated, I just kept like
- 4:08the first sentence of it Dream. High tells, the story of six
- 4:12students at kid in art High School who work to achieve their
- 4:15dreams of becoming music stars in the Korean music industry.
- 4:19This show aired from January to February 2011, it is 16 episodes
- 4:23long and the director is Ian book.
- 4:27He's directed things like Dream High 2, which is a sequel to
- 4:31this and we can talk a little bit about it later school. 2013,
- 4:35Secret Love descendants of the sun, which is a massive show.
- 4:38We've covered it on the podcast Guardian, the lonely and great.
- 4:42God aka the okay, be a massive, freaking show Goblin mr.
- 4:48Sunshine, which we've also covered on the show.
- 4:50So these three bangers, three bangers in a row, sweet home
- 4:54from 2020 which is a Netflix, he's show and he's directing All
- 4:58Seasons. I think that's a season kdrama
- 5:01and then Gigi sohn is his most recent work from 2021.
- 5:05The Dream High show was written by a POC.
- 5:08Hey Ian and she's written, I can hear your voice Pinocchio
- 5:13page-turner While You Were Sleeping, which is a show that
- 5:16we've covered here on the podcast and start up from 2020.
- 5:21Coincidentally, both of those shows Stars, Bae Suzy And I'll
- 5:27cover her first as like, I guess she's like the leader of this of
- 5:31this ensemble cast Bae, Suzy plays goal, Jaime and she, if
- 5:36you don't know, was a member of Miss, A, and that is a K-Pop
- 5:42group. She's been in Gu Family, Book,
- 5:46uncontrollably fond Vagabond, and, and she will be in this
- 5:51Netflix show called due no later this year in 2023, I Dimension
- 5:56startup. And while you were sleeping
- 5:57because I kind of, we already just mentioned those and we've
- 6:00covered those extensively. They have their own reviews.
- 6:03Each of them that they're back feed.
- 6:06So we have Bae Suzy. Did you guys have anything to
- 6:09say, about Bae Suzy? I mean, I am, I'm actually more
- 6:17surprised about the director and writer, like, I hadn't realized
- 6:24that they had Had written all of these well, written and
- 6:28directed. All of these really big shows
- 6:31you any kind of It's a little weird that dream high is in
- 6:37there. Like yeah, it's shocking for
- 6:47sure a little bit. Yeah yeah I agree that it's like
- 6:52all of a sudden the career took like a hard left turn and all of
- 6:57a sudden he's like an amazing director and want someone not
- 7:04Just if you don't like the work that's fine.
- 7:06But that's dramas were hits. Like, you can't deny like
- 7:10descendants of the sun, Guardian, mr.
- 7:12Sunshine, sweet home. They all had a lot of Buzz
- 7:15around them. They were great exports for
- 7:18Korea and the Holly wave and you know, their household names.
- 7:23I should say it shows. We all have to start somewhere.
- 7:29Yeah. And keep the dream alive, guys
- 7:35because you could be on the level of young book where you're
- 7:40just putting out hit after hit and he working with Netflix and
- 7:44you working with big-name stars and doing High budget like mr.
- 7:48Sunshine is one of the most high production budget key, dramas
- 7:51out there, and like a Prestige television show.
- 7:56So it's incredible, it really is to go for dream which looks like
- 8:01it. It does.
- 8:02And you know, Oh is what it is but and it's not just Dream High
- 8:07but Dream High 2. Like that's that's that's the
- 8:12thing that's like a little. Okay sure guy.
- 8:17Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely.
- 8:19For those who don't know, Dream, High 2.
- 8:22I have not watched it but I think you might have about a I
- 8:27got into maybe a couple of episodes and not even my love
- 8:32for JB. Head help me continue, which is
- 8:38from Got7. Yeah, I get it.
- 8:41Yeah. And like I love him so much but
- 8:45II. Couldn't it was it was a lie.
- 8:49It was awful like Dream. High 2 is well known for being a
- 8:52terrible shit when like it was a major drop-off from Dream High,
- 8:57the first one, which is what we're covering today and it's
- 9:00such a shame I guess. But at the same time like, um,
- 9:03book Rebounded. And he's doing just fine.
- 9:08That's the director and I think it's a little bit of a joke now
- 9:14like the Dream High versus Dream.
- 9:15High 2 verses like is Dream High.
- 9:19A good show. Even like you know well we can
- 9:23talk about it a bit more. But so we we covered the
- 9:27director and the writer and Bae Suzy will cover the rest of the
- 9:31six students. So we have Kim sohyun Ron
- 9:34playing song that song sung dong and for those who don't know, we
- 9:40just covered My Love from the Star a couple of episodes ago,
- 9:44which is a major like Holly wave hit and then he was also in
- 9:48Moon. Embracing the Sun, the producers
- 9:51crash-landing on you Cameo, it's okay to not be, okay?
- 9:55Which is a huge one as well. And then he was most recently in
- 9:58one Ordinary Day I low-key love Kim Soo-hyun, and I hope that
- 10:05his career kind of picks up the way it did.
- 10:07Like the way it was almost 10 years ago when he was like, at
- 10:10the top of his game, he had all of the, like CF contracts.
- 10:14He was a top star and I just don't know why his star waned
- 10:19necessarily like, I don't know, it's just me, I guess that's
- 10:23wondering these things, but yeah.
- 10:27Now we also have pick Ian as jinguk and he for those who
- 10:33don't know, he was a member of 2 p.m. is a member of 2 p.m. and
- 10:37he's made a pretty successful career as an actor because he's
- 10:42been in. Bring It On ghost, save me
- 10:45Vincenzo, which was a huge sort of break out role for him.
- 10:50A lot of people didn't know necessarily who Tech was before
- 10:53Vincenzo. And then I think he was in most
- 10:56recently, Lee secret Royal inspector enjoy from 20 21 and
- 11:00he's still working. He still around.
- 11:02If you see his socials, he's like posting really cryptic like
- 11:06photos of like sets and like places where he is filming and
- 11:11stuff and he's around like, he's still a successful actor, and I
- 11:17think he's pretty bankable, still not to mention.
- 11:21Oh, keep going for sure. What's up?
- 11:24Oh, he just also signed with an agency here in the United
- 11:28States. To make that jump.
- 11:30Yes, I am hoping that that pans out for him because I really do
- 11:35think that he is a bankable star.
- 11:38He's likable. He's very versatile and I think
- 11:42he could do pretty well here in the west.
- 11:44I hope that he gets some chances.
- 11:46I remember, Like this is a kind of a Tanger, but not really
- 11:51whenever when Jay Park signed with Roc Nation and how like
- 11:55that was supposed to be like this huge thing and he was going
- 11:57to make a debut official debut and the states and whatever
- 12:02because he's signed with Roc Nation, which is Jay-Z's label
- 12:05and whatever. And like nothing really came of
- 12:07that it just like came and went and I hope that that's not with
- 12:12a case for Tech. They don't have the same
- 12:16problematic background. So hopefully, Lee.
- 12:18That's not going to be the same case, for both of them and, you
- 12:21know, Tech is very secretive. I don't, I mean, I, every KPop
- 12:26star is secretive of their lives and very protective of their
- 12:31privacy as much as they can be. Like, I don't know anything
- 12:34about tech, really. You know what I'm saying?
- 12:36Yeah, yeah. I mean, he hasn't all we need to
- 12:40know is that he has an alienated, like an entire group
- 12:43of people that I talked constantly and that just, you
- 12:47know, are not really ever. Going to move on from certain
- 12:50things that were said or done or whatever.
- 12:51So I think he has a really bright future with this move of
- 12:55signing to do work here and we talked about it in our kdrama
- 12:58episode with you just that we were like, oh, you know, now
- 13:01that packs of Jonah's going to do Marvel's.
- 13:03Who else do we think is going to really like breakout on the
- 13:05west? And we mentioned tuck like as a
- 13:07possibility because he speaks English and everything.
- 13:10So it just seems like it's falling into place as it should.
- 13:13So yeah. So for that, hoping praying for
- 13:16the best for you to check if your Listening for some reason.
- 13:19Okay. So then we have its private time
- 13:22and he just listens to kdrama bond gets in his spare time.
- 13:29Okay. So to round out the cast, we
- 13:31have hum hum and Jung plays young, Becky.
- 13:35And she was a member of Tiara and she's been working but she's
- 13:41really just done like weekend dramas and a handful of movies.
- 13:44We can dramas are High episode, count kdramas and like, You know
- 13:49sometimes over 100 episodes and so she's been steadily working
- 13:54but I don't think she's necessarily made a just a giant
- 13:58impact on the kdrama industry as a whole.
- 14:02I don't think she's very memorable and we have wooyoung
- 14:05as Jason. He's also a member of 2 p.m. and
- 14:09this is literally the only thing he's done in the kdrama world.
- 14:11This is only acting credit ever is this 1 as Jason.
- 14:16And then to round out the cast, we have this little I don't know
- 14:19if you've heard of a Jian. AKA I, you she plays kimpo suck
- 14:28and she's major major solo star in Korea and worldwide.
- 14:36She's just amazing. I've called her the fairy
- 14:38princess or very goddess before and various episodes.
- 14:43She's been in shows, like you are the best, The Producers.
- 14:46Moon lover Scarlet REO which were covering later in the
- 14:49season. She's been in my Mr. Which we
- 14:52did a couple of seasons ago, and, of course, hotel, de luna,
- 14:57which is a pretty big show. What do you have anything to say
- 15:03about these three? I understand why, why we on the
- 15:09knocked over again, I was gonna say the same thing.
- 15:18It does. It does it makes it really done.
- 15:24Can we just talk about our thoughts and things?
- 15:41We're about to get into it because we've just come to the
- 15:43end of like our ensemble cast of coursers, adults characters
- 15:47caregivers and teachers that are more veteran actors or people
- 15:51that you've I've seen in other shows more recently but we're
- 15:55just going to call it for for now.
- 15:58What? I don't know who wants to go
- 16:00first, but what did you guys think of Dream High?
- 16:03Laura has watched it twice so I think she can go first.
- 16:06Oh okay loud Echo. So I watched it twice and I
- 16:15personally have this like genre of kdramas that I like that
- 16:20aren't very good kind of really cringey but I really enjoy them
- 16:25in their cringe and Dream High is one of those.
- 16:30I think in my opinion what saves it or like what the big
- 16:36difference between Dream High and Dream High 2 is the actors
- 16:41like even though Not all six or amazing actors.
- 16:47Most of them were, and that's kind of, what saves the drama
- 16:50they sell this writing this dialogue, that is
- 16:57cringe-inducing goose-bumpy feeling and they, you know, they
- 17:02sell it, they give it, they give it like a nice touch where
- 17:06you're like, okay, this is really cringey, but I believe
- 17:09it. They cry really prettily.
- 17:12Like it's just, I I think what makes this drama is?
- 17:16The actors not gonna lie? The watching it a second time.
- 17:20The crunch went up like four levels and I found myself
- 17:24fast-forwarding. A lot of like scenes, so it it
- 17:30was a little bit more painful. The second time, this is
- 17:33definitely for me, one of those that you only watch ones because
- 17:36you're going through a hard time and you don't want to think
- 17:38about anything and then never watch again.
- 17:41Like, Got you, got you so who would you say were the best
- 17:47actors? Because he said like it's really
- 17:49based on the six, you know, ensemble cast members that we
- 17:53talked about who are for all intents and purposes Idols,
- 17:58right? An idol drama and which ones
- 18:01were the standouts for you? I think.
- 18:04Well, I mean, you could tell I you was gonna go places like
- 18:09she, you could tell I liked. How are you?
- 18:12You acted. I liked Zoo, Khao suan.
- 18:17How do you say? So, here's Kim.
- 18:19Soo Yung. I like him too young and I like
- 18:26taking I mean you could tell it was his first but yeah he you
- 18:30could tell he was going to become better at it.
- 18:35I'm not quite sure about Susie what!
- 18:39Hmm well we talked about it. So Kathy over you this is your
- 18:44first time watch of dream hide. This was my first and my last I
- 18:50will start there. So okay.
- 18:57Before I would have said that I pretty much like anything
- 19:02because like people would argue about certain movies with me and
- 19:04I can always see where people are coming from and kind of
- 19:07argue that The Devil's Advocate side of why something was made,
- 19:10why it's good or why, whatever? Mmm, I did not feel that way
- 19:15with Dream High. I was surprised, I was scared to
- 19:19come and share my opinions here because I feel like it's such a
- 19:23cult classic and such a, you know, generation.
- 19:27All cultural impact, whatever that I didn't want people to
- 19:30come for me. Not that I exist at all in any
- 19:33way, sort of anything but it was really hard for me to finish the
- 19:38show and I usually finish everything that I start with
- 19:43like movies and stuff. Just out of curiosity of how
- 19:45it's going to pan out. I had a really hard time with
- 19:49the writing. I had a really hard time with
- 19:52the acting. I had a really hard time with
- 19:54the filming I I had a really hard time finding redeeming
- 20:00things to say about the show and I finished it exclusively
- 20:04because we were doing this episode with you which we are.
- 20:07So thankful to that you invited us over over virtually to talk
- 20:12about it but and with all that said, I'm still grateful that
- 20:16now I know what it is so I can be in the conversation whenever
- 20:18it comes up so roasted but I'll be in the conversation to roast
- 20:22it. Oh God.
- 20:23Okay. So I mean, I kind of want to
- 20:27talk more about like what what you disliked about the show.
- 20:33I don't know if I have time. I'll say, my thoughts and we can
- 20:42come Circle back to some of the, like, General terrible Miss of
- 20:47the show. So, and I'm sorry, it's whiny
- 20:50fans. I would just want to clarify.
- 20:51This is just an opinion. I am nobody, don't worry about
- 20:55me, like, That's it. So yeah again like I never show.
- 20:59I guess we should have a disclaimer that these are our
- 21:00opinions, it's completely subjective.
- 21:02You don't need to freak out about anything that we say were
- 21:06not the Arbiters of taste here, okay.
- 21:09Like we're just having fun. It's we're all here to have fun.
- 21:13So, Dream High, I had watched it I think into around 2012 or
- 21:192013. It was probably one of the first
- 21:22like, in the first 25 kdramas that I I'd ever watched early on
- 21:29and I was not too far removed from the time period that they
- 21:33had filmed it and from this era of Kpop, right?
- 21:36Like this is kind of when I started getting into Kpop and I
- 21:40had heard like a couple of 2 p.m. songs and I had heard like
- 21:44one miss a song and I you know I was like baby Kpop fan and just
- 21:50dipping my toes into it and then I get to see Dream High and I
- 21:54was like this It's a whole new world like this is nothing like
- 21:59the industry here in the states where you like it's all based on
- 22:04like Glock or who you know, and there's not all this bureaucracy
- 22:10I guess or trainee process. I guess the trainee process
- 22:15really was like eye-opening for me and even though there's like
- 22:19giant differences between how its portrayed and Dream High and
- 22:22how it really is in the industry for the most part.
- 22:25Yes they are. Are taught in classes and
- 22:28having, you know, showcases and exhibitions and things with the
- 22:32grated on like that is all pretty par for the course, true
- 22:37of the Kpop industry and the trainee process and I was like
- 22:42stunned out of my mind that this was true like for it all
- 22:46intensive purposes, it is true. Not that there's a cure in high
- 22:49school. That's Outsourcing, you know,
- 22:53trade he's into the companies, but You know, it was it was very
- 22:58eye-opening for me and I remember feeling a little bit
- 23:02cringy about some things and I was like, this isn't like the
- 23:05a-plus-plus writing like I was at for some reason I was just
- 23:10like I'm still in my Boys Over Flowers era, right?
- 23:13So I was very forgiving of a lot of things and didn't necessarily
- 23:17feel that strongly about the puzzle pieces that make up a
- 23:22great drama, great TV show, or a great thing.
- 23:26Film or something like that. Something to that effect.
- 23:28So that wasn't concerned necessarily with the sound
- 23:32mixing was horrendous. Oh, my hearing, why am I hearing
- 23:35all kinds of horrible? Horrible, horrible sound mixing
- 23:41the cinematography is, like, non-existent.
- 23:44It felt like they shot this on, like a digital camera micro we
- 23:47think. Yeah.
- 23:48I was like Overexposed and terrible and like the actual
- 23:56Editing of it, like the shots were too long in so many
- 24:00instances. I was like, why is this shot
- 24:02still continuing, the pacing of the dialogue was terrible.
- 24:06I was like, there's like beats here.
- 24:09It's awkward like they this needs to be edited.
- 24:11This needs to be like tone, you know, tightened up in the script
- 24:15and I was a very on this watch. I was like, this is awful.
- 24:21Like, you know, all of these puzzle pieces, make up my
- 24:24opinion of your show and And I was like, this is terrible.
- 24:27But one thing that I didn't dislike about the show one thing
- 24:30that stayed the same from my initial watch was how much I
- 24:33admired the heart of the characters and this General
- 24:38message of follow your dreams like do whatever you can work
- 24:44hard, you know, you'll achieve, what you what you set out to do,
- 24:49your Ambitions are you know, valid and all of this stuff.
- 24:53So like it was very preachy like even on this Around.
- 24:56I was like, this is the prettiest message and they keep
- 24:58saying it over and over again. Music brings us together, music
- 25:02is a universal language and like all of this hokey like
- 25:07messaging, you know, hit me as way more cringe this time.
- 25:12But at the end of the day, that's what people I think.
- 25:15Connect to in Dream High is like this heart and this this feeling
- 25:22that, you know, they can do it, it's very aspirational.
- 25:26Well, I think for a lot of people not just, if you suddenly
- 25:29want to be a creative and want to get into the music industry
- 25:32or want to be a professional dancer, what have you like?
- 25:35It's kind of goes far beyond that and I think it might even
- 25:40dip into just the culture of Korea, right?
- 25:44Like here if we see a movie like I don't know like a mission
- 25:49impossible or something like that.
- 25:50Like that's a very action-heavy that's very aspirational for a
- 25:54lot of people were like, yeah, I can do this.
- 25:56Beat the got the bad guy I can save the world.
- 25:58Like that's kind of embedded into like our DNA of like the
- 26:03Air Force One, get off my plane. Like, there's also like all of
- 26:07these other facets of like, americanism that's in the movies
- 26:11that we watch here in the west and in Korea, this Kpop show
- 26:17that did very well when it aired and sort of launched.
- 26:23All of these careers. Like, I feel like people, I'll
- 26:26have a lot of nostalgia and good feelings toward it because of
- 26:30the messaging. And not just because of the set
- 26:33dressing of it, not necessarily because they're putting drawing
- 26:39giant stars on their eyes. And like, that's trendy not like
- 26:42it's if we're talking about the way that it's aged, it's aged
- 26:47terribly in that respect. But, you know, I think it's, I
- 26:52think it's cute. I think it's feel good.
- 26:56I agree with that sentiment of the cuteness and the message.
- 27:01And I understand why people like that.
- 27:04And why people might gravitate towards a feel-good thing of
- 27:07like, if you work hard, you will get the results that you're
- 27:09after kind of thing. I understand that, for me, I
- 27:12guess the problem lies with the fact that when we watch movies
- 27:16or listen to music or watch a kdrama, there's something about,
- 27:20we're all looking for that. Suspension of disbelief moment,
- 27:23we want to be transported to that moment.
- 27:26And forget that like you are living in 2023 and you know
- 27:30whatever is happening in the world wherever you are and
- 27:33geographically speaking. I was not able to do that
- 27:36because of all the other things that were happening at all
- 27:39times. Everytime jyp came on the screen
- 27:42suspension of disbelief over like you know like it was it was
- 27:48every time that I was trying to kind of just like give it a
- 27:51chance and get wrapped into the storyline, something would
- 27:55happen. Either the sound mixing or the
- 27:58shots or the cinema, something that I was just like, why is
- 28:02this a thing? And I also I mean I think just
- 28:05to give it I guess a couple of positive spins here and there
- 28:08the first three to four episodes are really badly shot, but it
- 28:12gets better like the filming gets better after the fourth or
- 28:16fifth episode. Those kinds of things improve.
- 28:19And obviously, the chemistry of the cast is a whole also
- 28:21improves as the as the show goes.
- 28:25And I have to Say suhyun's acting.
- 28:27Like I wish there was like maybe two or three things that kept me
- 28:30alive. While I was watching the show,
- 28:33one of them, was two hands acting.
- 28:34Like he is incredible. I started looking into all of
- 28:37his life and like II, the usual Obsession that kind of grows in
- 28:41me when I start liking someone from Astro, or from a, like,
- 28:45music or anything happen only with him, I already like text
- 28:48icon already know stuff about him, I use same.
- 28:51But from this show, he was the only one that I was like, I want
- 28:54to know more and I want to know What else has happened with
- 28:56them? And what other works he's done
- 28:58because I need to watch more of him.
- 29:00Hmm. So I guess that's my thing.
- 29:02Is just the quality of the shoe and all the other elements that
- 29:08are usually, therefore either comedy or just keeping it light
- 29:12didn't really work for me and that's my thing.
- 29:15Yeah. Yeah no suspension of disbelief
- 29:18for me. Absolutely you're absolutely
- 29:20right and hitting it on the head of especially with jyp in the
- 29:24show How do I put this? I girl, I have thoughts.
- 29:31I mean, let's talk about it because jyp is first of all, the
- 29:36drama is co-produced by Bae yong-joon ski East and jyp of
- 29:42jyp entertainment, Park jinyoung.
- 29:45And then he also acts as like the music director for like the
- 29:51large swaths of the show. Bae yong-joon, I don't know.
- 29:56If you and I can have a face to go with any, that's my Oppa for
- 30:00life of. Yes him, I needed more of him in
- 30:02the show. They took him away.
- 30:03He was like the only good thing that they had going for me and
- 30:06bro. So I forgot completely that.
- 30:09I had this other dude, come in and he was like the principal
- 30:12and like chairman of this Kirin Art School or whatever and then
- 30:17he like completely takes himself off the playing board and he's
- 30:20gone, you never see him again in the show.
- 30:23This is the male lead from the iconic.
- 30:26Her Sonata drama if you, if you've seen that drama in the
- 30:31kdrama. So for him to be in the show and
- 30:35then this was his first show in three years.
- 30:39So this one ramanujan not seeing this guy for like three years
- 30:42and then all of a sudden he shows up at Dream, High for like
- 30:4545 episodes and then just like, fuck sake.
- 30:48Even bro, that's all the budget covered for honest.
- 30:51Yeah, it's giving that it's giving we had.
- 30:53But yeah, so bring this huge star for two.
- 30:56Episodes. And that's it.
- 30:57Yeah, so he was a co-producer on the on Dream High and then jyp
- 31:04obviously was heavily involved. They like the winter Sonata guy,
- 31:11or whatever, for lack of a better term.
- 31:13If you guys can't lie, don't have a face, the winter, Sonata
- 31:16male lead guy, he was creative producer on the on Dream High,
- 31:20he provided the overall concept the goals, the ideas and then
- 31:24jyp came in and compose the music.
- 31:26Zurich and choreographed the dance for the series.
- 31:28So it down you can freaking tell that this is what happened, you
- 31:35know, like he's jyp the influence that he had on the
- 31:41show behind the scenes. Great not taking anything away
- 31:45from that him in front of the camera I'm like offended.
- 31:48Like to this day, I The fact that he put himself in the drama
- 31:55it's has like awful. It's like heavily the fact that
- 31:59he just did a like a little mini tour in the state's.
- 32:01It's like his delusion has not worn off but he can't do certain
- 32:05things that he really shouldn't try in the first place.
- 32:09But really it's like, you know, it felt at some point and I if
- 32:12he were more self-aware, which I don't think he is based on the
- 32:16fact that he even did a show and in New York and California, the
- 32:19fact that he It almost felt like he was doing a caricature of
- 32:23himself like yeah, like a self-deprecating character that
- 32:28kind of played on the stereotypes that people had of
- 32:31him at the time, you know. So it's like, oh, maybe he's,
- 32:34like, in on the joke. No, like it, just as a show
- 32:38evolved. And as he did more things, I'm
- 32:39like the amount of airtime and screen time, that was dedicated
- 32:43to his dance sequence and his singing.
- 32:46It's like Mama. Pull the plug someone, turn the
- 32:49camera off. Yeah, please, it's not.
- 32:51Not good. It.
- 32:52Yeah, it wreaked of him being like an extreme narcissist and
- 32:57couldn't give the Limelight to these kids who are his own true.
- 33:02A lot of them were his own trainees, his discover them
- 33:05like, or nurtured them, or whatever debut them out of jyp
- 33:10entertainment and still, he decides to be in the drama, and
- 33:13this was his acting debut. It wasn't like he was an
- 33:15established actor. Anything this was the first time
- 33:18you ever see jyp in a show Tara he said coach the coach put me
- 33:24in and he put himself in as what happened.
- 33:27It's a new kind of see like a tech and the rest of the actors.
- 33:33Like as much as they were trying to do good acting, they would
- 33:36break any time. He was on the screen because
- 33:38they just could see the full of shit.
- 33:40And I was like, just coming through their, their suspension,
- 33:43of disbelief also was not working right random and I said,
- 33:46yeah, it felt it felt to me, personally, I have now an
- 33:54obsession with understanding the behind the scenes of the inner
- 33:58workings of the Kpop industry and knowing what I know now and
- 34:01knowing what I know of jyp. And knowing, you know, the
- 34:04mismanagement of the group's, I'm his agency in general, to
- 34:08not name any group specifically. But most importantly, Got7, and
- 34:12my heart. Seeing him on the show.
- 34:16Felt like he was on this kind of redemption tour and trying to
- 34:20portray Himself thinking that people would believe that thing
- 34:24as this like good director Company, CEO person that always
- 34:29wanted to look for the talent and it doesn't matter.
- 34:32The looks. All that matters is the hard
- 34:34work and this is and I'm just like you cannot be more full of
- 34:37shit. Like you get off my TV right
- 34:39now, you know, that was something that came up.
- 34:43That was something that came up in the comments section of a few
- 34:45tick tocks that I posted was that people were saying, jyp is
- 34:49such a hypocrite and like, I absolutely 100% get it because
- 34:54if you watch the show, the way that his characters crafted is,
- 34:58he's like an advocate for the kids, and for their talent and
- 35:02it doesn't matter what you look like.
- 35:04It doesn't matter that I use pills.
- 35:06Look is overweight. It doesn't matter.
- 35:08She has the talent. She has the voice.
- 35:11She can make it in the industry. You shouldn't be trying to
- 35:13change these kids. They're good the way they are.
- 35:17And like all of that messaging that's tied into His character
- 35:21is being this like righteous. You know, holier-than-thou
- 35:26person is flies right in the face of everything that he
- 35:31stands for and has built under jyp entertainment.
- 35:35And all of the changes that he's made to his lineup of trainees,
- 35:42and debut debut. I don't dip debutantes or
- 35:45whatever all the groups that he's launched.
- 35:47And the, the artist that he's Third and stuff like that.
- 35:52Sure he's probably doing a lot of good, but yes, he's done a
- 35:54fuck ton of harm and has created that system that they're trying
- 36:00to rail against with his character in Dream High.
- 36:03So I can understand why people are upset, not necessarily that
- 36:07he's just a bad actor. The characters shoehorned into
- 36:10her wise jyp and his own fucking show.
- 36:13The fact that he's also like, spewing all of this.
- 36:16Revisionist nonsense is also deeply offensive.
- 36:21Yeah, I think we know who you are and he was trying to sell
- 36:24this thing to us, but he wasn't bad.
- 36:26And it's just now even more offensive like ten plus years
- 36:29later that it's only gone worse, right?
- 36:32Right. And with, In the show you could
- 36:35see who his favorite were like the fact that he included.
- 36:41Susie, he included Justice two members from 2 p.m. like you
- 36:45could tell that he was trying to sell specifically.
- 36:50Yeah, mostly Susie. But then like, you know, threw
- 36:53in some 2 p.m. members, just to kind of like mmm, Yeah, not look
- 36:59so bad. I guess it's a commercial for
- 37:01jyp entertainment and that's what's unnerving.
- 37:06About the whole thing is that you can't like divorce yourself
- 37:11from the concept of jyp's, not just trying to Rebrand himself,
- 37:17only a few years into what 2nd gen Kpop, but he's also trying
- 37:21to introduce audiences and have sort of like a Groundswell
- 37:26effect for these artists that. He's launching that are just a
- 37:30few years into their career and might not be household names.
- 37:35Like they are now like I feel like Tech and Suzy and Kim
- 37:38Soo-hyun like all these people and I you like don't literally
- 37:41hi. These are household names now
- 37:43maybe in part because of Dream High.
- 37:45But mostly because they just they're amazing.
- 37:48Like they have the talent, they have the giftings of someone
- 37:52that was going to go far in the first place and I don't know if
- 37:55we should think jyp necessarily. For, or if we should still like,
- 38:00you know, shit on him. But like honestly it is quite a,
- 38:04an experience to watch Dream High knowing what, you know now,
- 38:08and knowing how their careers, turned out.
- 38:10Everyone's careers, I'm not gonna go as far as thanking him.
- 38:13I'll say even a broken clock is right, twice a day, and this far
- 38:16as I'm gonna go with giving him any sort of credit for anything.
- 38:20Hmm. So I'm so glad that we talked
- 38:24about the dyp of it all. Get out of the way, so we, yeah.
- 38:28Yeah, Glenn's are focused on after other things.
- 38:30Yeah. So why mention Kim soohyun.
- 38:33He is the only member of the ensemble cast who was not an
- 38:37idol. In still, is not an idle.
- 38:39Never was part of a group or anything but he did train for
- 38:44three months at jyp entertainment, in order to
- 38:47portray this role. Well and kind of hone in on his
- 38:51singing and dancing. So that's a very admirable to go
- 38:56three months. I mean, I don't know if they put
- 38:59him through like the ringer necessarily but you know, I'm
- 39:02sure that it was difficult. Difficult thing.
- 39:09Do you guys have anything to else?
- 39:10Adds? I have a little more fun facts
- 39:12about the show. No, okay.
- 39:15So like I said before, I was really the drift of the show was
- 39:18popular, especially popular among teenagers and the average
- 39:22viewership ratings were about 15.7% during its two-month run.
- 39:26And I don't know if you got Around to watching this, I
- 39:28didn't have time to watch the special episode episode 17.
- 39:32I watched a chunk of it, unfortunately.
- 39:33Dead. Okay.
- 39:35Couldn't couldn't bring myself to do it.
- 39:37Not the first time not the second time we're making faces
- 39:49here, guys. Yeah.
- 39:52So the cast of the show performed in a special concert
- 39:56in Seoul and that was aired, the After the series ended and
- 39:59that's episode 17. I have to this day.
- 40:02I don't think I've ever watched episode Just Clips here and
- 40:06there, but not well, produced, two home surprised.
- 40:09Nobody's it's not like the, you know, the games and stuff,
- 40:12there's awkwardness. There's just it's not good.
- 40:14I watch like maybe 20 minutes of it because once the show ended,
- 40:18I was like, did I really am like this?
- 40:19Like this is it like there's no, like nothing else.
- 40:21That's that's where you're gonna have, like, whatever?
- 40:23I'm like you guys thought through this.
- 40:25Like I sat through it and this is how you're going to freaking
- 40:28I like pay me back kind of thing.
- 40:30So, at some point I was like, I can't, so I stopped.
- 40:33Yeah, okay. Well, fair enough, I kind of had
- 40:36the same feeling when I was like, you know what?
- 40:38This is that's enough. Do I need to watch episode 17?
- 40:41No, I don't think I do. It's not required reading, but
- 40:46like I said, that the show did pretty well, like when it aired
- 40:50and it won a bunch of KBS drama awards, like best supporting
- 40:54actress for Eun Ji. Best new actor, in popularity,
- 40:59award for Kim Soo-hyun, best new actress for Bae Suzy.
- 41:03Well, I will say the second reason.
- 41:05So, the first thing that kept me alive, was suing on the second
- 41:08thing was even, geez acting, like I loved her, I hate who she
- 41:13became at the end of the show. She actually had like all the
- 41:16substance. I was like the evil stepmother
- 41:19teacher person and then love. I don't know when she became
- 41:24this. Like something good is
- 41:26happening, and I'm just going to cry.
- 41:28I 45 minutes for no. Absolute like reason, and the
- 41:31whole like clipping in the flower thing on.
- 41:33Oh, yeah. Oh yeah.
- 41:35Oh mama like no. Yeah, this is, she was one of
- 41:39the teachers in the show, for those who don't know, she was
- 41:43teacher. She and she was like a freaking
- 41:47badass, the bad at all the bodies.
- 41:50Yes. And her hairstyle was like, kind
- 41:53of like slightly before it was cool to do that like hairstyle.
- 41:57Yeah. She's like, Ian flag, stop
- 42:03before. The can I speak to your manager?
- 42:05She had this like, cool. But yeah, and she's been in so
- 42:11many shows like princess hours. She was a princess haemyeong.
- 42:16She's been in the King. Two hearts, as a cameo, she's
- 42:20been in Revolutionary. Love the third charm.
- 42:23Extraordinary attorney Wu as jisoo.
- 42:27My don't remember that character.
- 42:28You guys remember that character?
- 42:29I was looking into it too because I saw that pekerman and
- 42:32she had like both been on that. Yeah and I was like I don't
- 42:35remember her, it doesn't really ring a bell because I was like
- 42:38wow what a bad bitch I need to watch more.
- 42:40So she was so like a second person that I looked into that I
- 42:43wanted to see more of her. I'll tell ya, I think that if
- 42:46you watch her in Princess hours, you'll enjoy her character.
- 42:51She's like a really strong sweet prince at the completely
- 42:55opposite of her. Her character here and Dream
- 42:57High, but I think she's wheelchair-bound as long as it's
- 43:00like make sense. I just want the character to
- 43:02make sense. Oh, you know, it she makes
- 43:04sense. And Princess hours, I definitely
- 43:06liked her character. She's a pleasure in that.
- 43:09So she 14, what was it? Yeah, best supporting actress.
- 43:14Best new actress for Bae Suzy best.
- 43:16Couple award for Kim Soo-hyun, and Bae Suzy.
- 43:18And this is all the KBS drama awards.
- 43:20The show was nominated for a bunch more, including a bunch of
- 43:24back song Awards. They did not win any better.
- 43:26On the wards but they were nominated which is a big deal in
- 43:29and of itself. The sequel, like I said, aired a
- 43:33year later with a different cast.
- 43:36Sorry, Kang soda, got7's JB and jinyoung 2am's jinwoon, Tiaras
- 43:43jinyo Jian and sisters, Hulan a lie and park Puck.
- 43:49So June like Park seojun was in Dream High 2.
- 43:54Start somewhere Dream, High was adapted into a Japanese stage
- 44:01Musical. And speaking of musicals, they
- 44:03have announced that it's going to be a stage musical in Korea.
- 44:08It's supposed to open this year, I don't know if that's still
- 44:11happening, if they're working towards that or if it's just
- 44:13going to be like surprise here it is.
- 44:16But yeah, that's a it's quite a legacy that it has.
- 44:21You're not what I wondered while I watched it because the Thing
- 44:24that I did talk with loud about is like, she knows that I can't
- 44:29do cringe and and and she knew that I wasn't going to like the
- 44:33show because of that. So what I wondered in a few
- 44:38times like of the moments of the show did have some solid just
- 44:43grounding woman's. There is what if it had been
- 44:46done in 2022. Uh-huh.
- 44:49With love all play treatment like if it had been With that
- 44:55writing style with that camera style with that acting style.
- 45:00I don't think I would have had such a hard time watching it as
- 45:04I as you know, what it was again it's just me because clearly
- 45:08like it did well when it when it came out.
- 45:11And also I looked for other negative reviews because I felt
- 45:15very alone and I was like, I feel like I'm the only person
- 45:18who's ever going to say anything negative about the show and I
- 45:20was like, I don't want to be cancelled at this point in my
- 45:23life. But and I really couldn't find
- 45:25any negative reviews. Like, I mean, I'm not going to
- 45:27say I look for hours but I look like just briefly.
- 45:30Yeah and yeah, I couldn't find anything but I really was
- 45:32thinking if that show had been made today with the right
- 45:36budget, really? It's a problem and the right
- 45:38people. It would have been better.
- 45:41I think the people were right, like, the actors are right.
- 45:44It was just, they were at the very beginning of their career.
- 45:48I did YP was way too involved. So if you take away his grin
- 45:53genus and like, I said, give it a whole different, like, backup,
- 45:57or like, sauces, it'd be pretty good.
- 46:02I think some people wanted in the comments on Tick-Tock.
- 46:06People were like, I hope they do this with stray kids.
- 46:09Like, do a Dream High, like really targets immediately,
- 46:14please. All right, I wanted to bring it
- 46:18up and see her reaction. Perfect.
- 46:19So, you guys are like hell, no, no, no.
- 46:21Um, let our lotta friends who do Like, the commercial acting keep
- 46:26straight kids because they're doing great with those.
- 46:28I love that for them, they're great for that.
- 46:30They have the budget, they can do that, it's got you.
- 46:33Yeah, it's not that stray cats can act.
- 46:34Just to be clear. I think that they can act.
- 46:37I just don't want kdrama heaviness like cringy kdrama
- 46:42heaviness on. It was like to give an idea for
- 46:45people that are not gonna watch the show ever.
- 46:49There is an entire TV Tropes dot-org article on the trope.
- 46:54Is that are featured in Dream High which is pretty rare for
- 46:56them to do for a kdrama. I played a note about that how
- 47:00many tropes like it was. They were so sorry but it was.
- 47:03Yeah. Single card with the tropes I
- 47:05started scrolling through to see if I could like include any in
- 47:07the episode. I was like this is too many
- 47:09troops to stay on a single, you know, podcast episode.
- 47:14I was like, this is so so many atoms children, swim that a
- 47:19character. It's not even like, even like
- 47:21more like collectors. Like Niche ones, put on a bus.
- 47:28I didn't know that was a Trope and in-universe example
- 47:31jinguk's, politician, dad aims to do this, to him, by sending
- 47:34him out of the country, out of the country.
- 47:36So that no one can find out. He abandoned, his might like,
- 47:38that's a put on a bus Trope, thin here, punch a wall tro,
- 47:43princess in rags, Trope, I'm telling you, it's endless Master
- 47:48of the mixed message Trope, love triangle Trope.
- 47:53I mean, I mean It's endless. So I might link that in the show
- 47:56notes in case, anybody is interested in seeing every
- 47:59single trip, that Dream, High utilized throughout, and I'll
- 48:05ask quickly, it's like a like, a novela like eight style is the
- 48:21way that it's shot. So maybe, Maybe you like that,
- 48:24so maybe you would like, maybe you like it.
- 48:26I mean, I didn't like it. I didn't feel any type of way
- 48:29about it. My parents would love it.
- 48:31They love this type of Novella type that you like, only heirs
- 48:35around 4 p.m. or 7:00 p.m., oh, they love it, they love it.
- 48:42Yeah, I didn't feel any type of way about it.
- 48:44The first time I watched him high this time I was like this
- 48:46is unwatchable. But speaking of unwatchable, the
- 48:51last topic that I wanted to talk about before we give her scores
- 48:53and get into spoilers was Bae Suzy, what did you think of
- 48:57basis? He's acting.
- 49:01Personally, it wasn't bad, but it was just very, I mean, don't
- 49:06get me wrong. Take you on was also kind of
- 49:08OneNote, but he was, I love him. So it's like there's no real
- 49:14reason but to hers was very just one note throughout.
- 49:19And what I did appreciate is the way that she could form.
- 49:22These really, really big, big tears that like, rolled down her
- 49:26face. I was like, damn girl you
- 49:28hydrated. It's like Really big tears.
- 49:32I mean, I'm not quite sure if this was her first one.
- 49:36I think it might be her first one.
- 49:40So you could. I mean, you could just tell that
- 49:42they just didn't have a lot of Experience is indeed.
- 49:47The first thing that Susie has ever done, ever in her acting
- 49:52career. All of them, could cry really
- 49:55easily. And that's another note that I
- 49:56was positive that I wrote like whatever acting training, they
- 49:59received or whatever, trauma they've been to in their lives.
- 50:01Like I feel bad for them because of ability to cry on cue.
- 50:04All of them was extremely impressive to me, because I'm
- 50:07like, I'm like, I know actors are trained for this, but even
- 50:10this level of crying, I was very surprised with her.
- 50:13I will tell you and this is about the character not about
- 50:16Susie, so please no one. Come for me.
- 50:18What I wrote from episode one, at the end was no redeeming
- 50:21qualities of than a sad story complete.
- 50:23Oh bitch, I hate her like that kind of person who just like is
- 50:27entitled to, like, everyone give me my flowers just cuz I exist.
- 50:31Like, I don't, I don't like those characters at all.
- 50:34And the fact that at the end of the story, they tried to make
- 50:37sense of it of like oh she's just a clone of her dad and
- 50:39that's why she's the way she is. Oh, true also doesn't math as a
- 50:44reason for being the way she was, as far as Susie's acting it
- 50:48gave Kristen Stewart with like, oh, this is the face that I make
- 50:52when I'm sad and this is the That I make when I'm happy and
- 50:54whatever like it tried, they tried to make a comedic but I
- 50:59wasn't really even at the end when she had transformed and now
- 51:02she was like, actually like allowing herself to feel things.
- 51:05It wasn't really there for me. So I okay was not a fan of her
- 51:09first acting job, but I'm looking forward to seeing what
- 51:12she's done more recently. The only acting part where I was
- 51:16like, okay, I believe it was not the only one, but one that's
- 51:20really stuck to me was oh, but this is Ehlers.
- 51:24Okay, you know what will say that for spoilers?
- 51:26I will just say my general thoughts about will jump right
- 51:30back into Susie after spoilers. But my general thought on her
- 51:34acting in this was that I was Atrocious.
- 51:41I thought I thought she was atrocious and like coming back
- 51:46to it. After seeing seeing other Susie
- 51:48performances, I'm like either she's improved or she's done a
- 51:53really good job of hiding how bad she is at acting by being in
- 51:59great dramas. Mmm, because dramas better than
- 52:02she is watching her, but I had heard so many good things about
- 52:05her, I think Also came in with pretty high expectations.
- 52:09So the shock and the fall was even harder for me when I
- 52:12watched the acting here. So and we'll was sad for me, is
- 52:16that I could see glimpses of other characters and other
- 52:19acting performances that she's done since Dream High in Dream
- 52:24High. And I'm like, oh no, is it just
- 52:27because she's a bad actress and she's sort of like, masking her
- 52:32inadequacies very well nowadays. I was like, Thinking my entire
- 52:38opinion. Yeah, it's her inexperience
- 52:41acting with terrible writing is not good formula.
- 52:45True. It's not as she really didn't
- 52:47have a lot to work with to be exact because of the bad
- 52:49writing. So it was just a bad.
- 52:52Yeah, I feel bad. I feel terrible.
- 52:55But anyway, what would you give the show out of five Soldier
- 52:58bottles? Oh no.
- 53:04Realistically like realistically?
- 53:06I think just let it fly anything above a to his wrong but just
- 53:14for like Nostalgia, I guess a three.
- 53:19But like anything above a 2 is wrong.
- 53:22In my personal opinion, I'm sorry Tyson.
- 53:26I actually do like it, but if I have to be like II like the
- 53:31drama and like this is the first time that you watched it without
- 53:34anything of these, you know conversation.
- 53:36Oh the first time I watched it, I knew it was bad but again I
- 53:44have this really, really nice. Genre of movies or cage.
- 53:52Dramas that I really enjoy the cringe.
- 53:55Like the cringer it is the better like sometimes on
- 53:58Netflix. I'll watch like the really
- 54:01cringey like Teenage stuff without like everyone's like it.
- 54:04And I'm like, oh, this is terrible.
- 54:06What am I doing? I questioned my whole life but I
- 54:08can't stop watching it and this is that.
- 54:11So it ranks high in my personal but I know that it's not good.
- 54:16You like yeah, does that make sense?
- 54:18Like I do? I do understand that completely.
- 54:20Yeah, well, okay for me. I had thought about if I wanted
- 54:24to get cancelled by reading at a one or if I was going to give it
- 54:27a 2 just for Who's Gonna Cancel you?
- 54:30I don't know. Girl, I just you know, social
- 54:32media makes me think things and I'm just scared of people but
- 54:35okay, no I just honestly speaking, I was somewhere
- 54:39between A1 and A2 like I'm not going to give it a 1.5.
- 54:42I think I could solidly say like for me it's a 1025 unwatchable.
- 54:46Would never recommend it to anyone that I like a pretty like
- 54:49I respect it. I respect someone I would never
- 54:52Be like you should watch stream high?
- 54:53Like, no, go on. If you want to know what
- 54:55happened going, Wikipedia don't even watch a clip because it's
- 54:58not worth it like clips of what the dancing.
- 55:00That was terrible. You know okay like it's a 1025 I
- 55:05said what I said, cancel me fuck it.
- 55:08Oh wow. Okay so for me I think I'm going
- 55:11to give it a two and a half if you if I think of it on a good
- 55:16day after listening to it like a bunch of to p.m. songs and maybe
- 55:18I'll give it a 3 out of 5 for this.
- 55:22Nostalgia pure Nostalgia because even after I watched Dream High
- 55:26and if you look go back and listen to some other episodes
- 55:29Depok, where I talk about Dream High briefly, I'm like it's a
- 55:33joke, like it's a joke of a kdrama.
- 55:35It's not a true, right? Kdrama.
- 55:39It is a tongue-in-cheek. These are Idols.
- 55:45It's an idol drama before. Like it was cool to be an idol
- 55:49in a drama, you know, nothing. It is worst-case scenario.
- 55:54I would say because they're playing to their strengths,
- 55:58their playing affects families of themselves.
- 56:01And, you know, it's not heavy lifting at all for them.
- 56:06So maybe a three on a good day, but really, it's like a two and
- 56:09a half. Yeah, I had half out of five, so
- 56:12I'll give it five out of five bottles of Soju.
- 56:15In terms of, I would have to drink five bottles, to be able
- 56:17to you know, just for Or so he owns eyes.
- 56:23I'd give it a 5 out of 5. Do you know what the real gets a
- 56:265 out of 5 for me, guess 10 out of five my God.
- 56:31So good in this. Oh my God.
- 56:34Alright, so we're just we're just about done with the general
- 56:37section. We're going to get into spoilers
- 56:40right after this. You want to come in.
- 56:50All right, we're on the other side of Let's jump back to Susie
- 56:54and what allowed are you were talking about?
- 56:57This is going to be a bit of a spoiler.
- 56:58So why don't you show us the only time that I believed her?
- 57:04And this is only because she was literally in her element was
- 57:09when one of the exams came up and they had to emote, or sing
- 57:15the song with like, emotion when she sang that I believed her
- 57:20because she's a Singer and she's literally been training to do
- 57:24this. So when she sang it, I was like,
- 57:27okay. Like, if you could do this for
- 57:30the rest of the look of the like series, it's be great, but it
- 57:34was just like a slight little moment where I was like, okay,
- 57:37she has potential, but it was just her doing her job.
- 57:41So it was a pivotal moment for the character that I was a
- 57:45turning point for her. So it showed like she did it.
- 57:48Well, she played wounds with. Yeah.
- 57:50Yeah. But that's what all right there.
- 57:54And I'd have all the emotions looking at talking a face like
- 57:57that, like, singing. Well thing, not just that back
- 58:02in my chair. Like, um, how do I put this?
- 58:06This show is maybe like a Cross between Step Up, High School
- 58:12Musical and Camp Rock and the story, super obvious.
- 58:20The conflicts are very clear. This drama doesn't do anything,
- 58:24terribly new, but it does tap into, like I said before, a lot
- 58:28of stuff that's positive about youth dramas or School, dramas.
- 58:32And that it's all about feels, it's all about heart.
- 58:36And ultimately, the story is a nun.
- 58:39About an underdogs, it's an Underdog Story and we can all
- 58:42root for underdogs. So the I think in episode 1,
- 58:50they teased that there's this artist K whose we're going to
- 58:54perform at the Grammys and he's a huge star.
- 58:58The first Korean artists to perform at the Grammys and this
- 59:03is in 2018 that is the present day.
- 59:09I guess that were at the rest of the shows a flashback
- 59:12essentially, but did any of you guess who artist K was I, when I
- 59:19first watched it, no, I mean not that very end, you realize who
- 59:23it is? But no, I didn't.
- 59:26Okay, I thought I didn't group, I didn't person.
- 59:30So, I at first, it was just giving a lot of like the current
- 59:34conversation with like South Korean talent and all the groups
- 59:38vying for American attention. So I thought it was like,
- 59:40immediately from that, I didn't really like understand on the
- 59:43moment until the end that I was a solo person.
- 59:46Yeah, I see. Okay, how sick of the pendant
- 59:50necklace? Did you get by the end of the
- 59:52show? Girl?
- 59:55I wanted it. I was like, yo, where's the
- 59:57merch? Can I get a pendant?
- 59:59Like to be lucky for x amount of time, please?
- 1:00:03I thought it was really ugly necklace too.
- 1:00:05Disgusting disgusting. It look like a, you know, an
- 1:00:09Olympics logo from 1998. Those like stuck in, just
- 1:00:13looking up and inform it look like, you know, now when kids
- 1:00:16the commercial like your kid can draw an animal and we can bring
- 1:00:20it to life, it looked like a director asks, his kids to do
- 1:00:24like a Logo. And then they printed it like 3D
- 1:00:27prints of it. Uh-huh.
- 1:00:30I also thought this was funny that the in episode 1, the
- 1:00:32introduced Susie as an opera singer.
- 1:00:35Oh awesome. I was like, what literally have
- 1:00:43a note that says it's in. Spanish can lick it up.
- 1:00:47Susie get account and Oprah, don't know, no, but Kalama, who
- 1:00:53would believe she's singing it. She She's it.
- 1:00:55Oh my God, it was so bad. It was bad.
- 1:00:58Is that? And then she got accepted into
- 1:01:00Juilliard, you expect me to believe that I don't.
- 1:01:04So that's a question that I had watching this whole drama.
- 1:01:08How old are they? So like, how old are they
- 1:01:10supposed to be? Like, are they supposed to be
- 1:01:13just getting into High School? Are they at the end of high
- 1:01:17school? So like Juilliard.
- 1:01:20What a 12? Like, no, they have to be tea.
- 1:01:24M, I want to say like 17 or 18 years old, which is why they can
- 1:01:28be considered freshman because they still have a further two
- 1:01:31years before they're considered adults, and they're 20 years old
- 1:01:34and out of high school. So, I guess there H is 18 and
- 1:01:38going to Juilliard. I guess she doesn't need to
- 1:01:41finish her version of high school of the suspension of
- 1:01:45disbelief at the end. Also, when like, oh your aunt,
- 1:01:50got you a spot of Juilliard. Oh no, that's not how this
- 1:01:52works. Like that was terrible.
- 1:01:54That's what I'm Saying like the the math wasn't mouthing the,
- 1:01:57the eyes weren't daughter. The t's were not crossed like it
- 1:02:00was impossible. How they were getting from point
- 1:02:03A to point B, every rent of this.
- 1:02:06Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:02:08The aunt had some art that we never see is like going to pay
- 1:02:11for her tuition and like, but you got her, the dead disappear
- 1:02:15so that this girl didn't have to, like, literally go into it.
- 1:02:19No, it's not. It's very confusing.
- 1:02:22Overall, did you guys get excited with Kim hyung Young at
- 1:02:25the airport in episode 1. He's one of the members is Over,
- 1:02:30Flowers F4. Did you get excited?
- 1:02:32Yeah, I'm just because just because I I really liked him,
- 1:02:37even though I hated the drama, I just liked him.
- 1:02:41So, when I, when I saw him I was like, okay, cute.
- 1:02:44Don't know why you're there but cute.
- 1:02:46Okay, I see ya. Did you recognize him Kathy?
- 1:02:50All right, that's fair. His career is basically done.
- 1:02:55I don't think he's done anything recent look, you know, but he
- 1:03:00was a famous Alum of kid in arts high school and that's how he
- 1:03:06looks like shoehorned into the drama.
- 1:03:11Very cool though, but Tech gets introduced.
- 1:03:14I thought Tech was so cool. Like from day one I was like
- 1:03:18text character. Is such a cool dude.
- 1:03:22Like he's a bad bad boy archetype but with a heart of
- 1:03:26gold and he saves Susie from these Thugs who like water to
- 1:03:31pay back her father's debt with her body and because that's a
- 1:03:36thing I guess and what is it? He starts jumping over cars and
- 1:03:42in slow motion Crazy 88 like being with like 10 people coming
- 1:03:46at you and you're like and got all of them.
- 1:03:51Yeah. You just doing parkour?
- 1:03:54Oh God. Some of the references though
- 1:03:57that they do for current K-pop stars or current artists are
- 1:04:04like way dated because the debt collector dude who becomes like
- 1:04:08a Ally later in the show. He, yeah, he wants to use.
- 1:04:14He wants Susie to pay back the debt in by becoming a famous
- 1:04:21K-pop artists and debuting. He wants to To be famous like
- 1:04:25Iggy OD. And I was like, whoa, that's
- 1:04:28like Whiplash because that's a name that you don't even hear
- 1:04:33nowadays. Yo, D, you know?
- 1:04:36Yeah, it's dated. It's dated, but I don't know
- 1:04:41about you guys, but there was some needle drops that like I
- 1:04:43did end up listening to after the show finished and one of
- 1:04:48them happens in episode 2 where wooyoung is dancing outside of
- 1:04:53the audition Hall and the end. Is watching him do this like
- 1:05:01weird ass like dance routine? I, what I think weird, it's
- 1:05:04just, it's like, dated as hell like it's that's not considered
- 1:05:10Stellar dancing by today's standard.
- 1:05:12So he's like doing these like really, like, dated America's
- 1:05:21Got Talent. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:05:24And go through. He doesn't.
- 1:05:26Not go through but we young is dancing to NEOS one in a million
- 1:05:32and I was like, oh my God, I love this song.
- 1:05:36Like even today Tech, I know usually about the OST at the end
- 1:05:43of the. Yeah, the recording.
- 1:05:45But that's just like talked about.
- 1:05:47The only thing that I was like, you know what, I'm gonna sit
- 1:05:51back and enjoy the fact that like, the Star Wars OST is
- 1:05:55playing right now, like, why is what?
- 1:05:56Are so much John Williams in this show.
- 1:06:00I know there are little Wayne 6 ft 7 in this.
- 1:06:04So want to know like Neo power. See I get it.
- 1:06:09Okay. All right.
- 1:06:10Right right right. Yeah.
- 1:06:11Oh I go wait six foot seven Star Wars, I don't know.
- 1:06:16Cool I had a moment when I don't I don't know what episode this
- 1:06:20is but Tech is on like a daytime.
- 1:06:23Talk show with his dad because the dad's trying to spin this
- 1:06:26This story like oh he's not my biological son, he's my adopted
- 1:06:30son whatever because he's an asshole and a politician and
- 1:06:34when he's saying this whole excessive story of how he
- 1:06:38adopted text character, they're playing the main theme of
- 1:06:44Schindler's List about that and I was like what?
- 1:06:52I was just taken aback. I was so taken aback because
- 1:06:57you're telling me the like sad violin music that you choose to
- 1:07:00put behind this. Very fake sob story.
- 1:07:05That the dad is giving on daytime television here in the
- 1:07:08show is Schindler's like Schindler's List.
- 1:07:13Are you kidding? Which is why I was saying like
- 1:07:17it's not just Star Wars. John Williams, it's Schindler's
- 1:07:20List. John Williams tube in the show.
- 1:07:24I mean, that's, I mean, that was a lot.
- 1:07:27I just did they get the rights? Like are they paying royalties?
- 1:07:29Are they gonna go? I don't know.
- 1:07:32That's what I wondered to. I'm like, you can't use the Star
- 1:07:34Wars. I'm like, I know they use it for
- 1:07:36less than 10 seconds but you can't use like sorry, oops,
- 1:07:38that's seriously. Yeah, yeah, I don't know.
- 1:07:42That's where all their money one.
- 1:07:45Oh to licensing these songs. Yeah the John Williams stuff
- 1:07:48instead of properly warming they're actors.
- 1:07:53I was so pissed off. These people were freezing the
- 1:07:56whole time. Oh, Swan Lake yeah, that was
- 1:08:02another one where they did a whole routine freezing breath.
- 1:08:06And the okay, so what we're referring to, for those who
- 1:08:09haven't watched the show in her, in the spoiler section, But
- 1:08:12entire show was shot during the winter.
- 1:08:15It's a winter show through and through and they apparently
- 1:08:19evidently had zero Heating in any of the production.
- 1:08:23And so you see their breath throughout the show every actor
- 1:08:28when they're breathing when they're talking you see their
- 1:08:30breath and it's unnerving that all your entire production was
- 1:08:35it in freezing temperatures and they're dressing.
- 1:08:39These they're wearing miniskirts are worrying.
- 1:08:42Little clothing little Blazers and that's it.
- 1:08:47Like the only one that was okay. Was, I you because she had a fat
- 1:08:49suit for half. Literally I, oh, my God.
- 1:08:53Everyone else was struggling. Let's talk about.
- 1:08:55Hey, cuties you years where? Oh my God, they were so they and
- 1:09:02body inside the building than and the outside.
- 1:09:05See ya? I got bronchitis from watching
- 1:09:09the show. Horrible horrible.
- 1:09:14All of them guts, super sick. That's like it was terrible.
- 1:09:22It was very distracting as well. Are we watching real?
- 1:09:26Like I don't care what they're saying.
- 1:09:28That girls freezing freezing your ass off like Jenna of
- 1:09:31disbelief? Yeah yeah.
- 1:09:34So let's talk about IU in the fat suit.
- 1:09:36Now when I first of all, when I originally watched the show I
- 1:09:40had no idea who I you was. So when they started, removing
- 1:09:44the fat suit and the Prosthetics on her face and stuff, I was
- 1:09:48shocked at how beautiful this random like woman was, I was
- 1:09:53like this girl is stunning and her voice is amazing.
- 1:09:56This was my introduction to. I you what did you guys feel
- 1:10:00about IU in the fat suit and her whole characterization and how
- 1:10:04the cast are not cast but how the other characters treated her
- 1:10:09throughout the show? I hated every second of it.
- 1:10:13Yeah. Like, the fat suit was horribly
- 1:10:16made like they only it wasn't a fat suit.
- 1:10:20They just took her leggings or whatever.
- 1:10:22She was wearing them and then patted them but they patted it
- 1:10:25like horrible. Like it would not have gone well
- 1:10:28in like drag race like it was just terrible.
- 1:10:31Terrible terrible. He's like lumpy and like weird
- 1:10:34and then it stopped at the knees.
- 1:10:35They didn't go all the way up the thighs.
- 1:10:38So it was just like Really really like bulb Louis like
- 1:10:43lower part of the leg and then like super skinny, super skinny
- 1:10:47thighs. And it was just, it was I, I
- 1:10:51hated every second she had started losing weight even
- 1:10:58though she was like, still eating a lot, but it was like
- 1:11:01they just took off the face Prosthetics, but her brother was
- 1:11:04the same, right, right. And then the storyline it.
- 1:11:08So I mean the only thing that I I like didn't hate and I was
- 1:11:11okay props to them was like okay she lost the weight after the
- 1:11:15200 days or whatever and then Jason was trying to like get
- 1:11:20something out of her and she's like actually I just realized
- 1:11:22that you were trash. So like by, oh my God, that was
- 1:11:25like that too. The children who wears a fedora
- 1:11:41like this over one. I gotta hit it that Fedora and
- 1:11:48the Bad English. Like the bad pronunciation, I
- 1:11:50think I heard that Tech was helping him with his English
- 1:11:53pronunciation. But I was like, wow, do
- 1:11:55something about that? I'm like, the irony of like,
- 1:11:57Tech, actually speaking English, but they didn't put them on that
- 1:11:59role, but they put Young on that role of the police.
- 1:12:02Anything makes sense. Do you know?
- 1:12:05I thought, I didn't think much of the English the first time I
- 1:12:09Watched it of Jason's English, but on this watch I was like
- 1:12:14he's terrible. Like, it's terrible
- 1:12:16pronunciation. Yeah.
- 1:12:18He's trying though. There's always led into the
- 1:12:24thing of why he started out basically like only speaking
- 1:12:28English and no one could understand him but he speaks
- 1:12:30perfect Korean and he has a sister named Julie but like
- 1:12:33Jason and Julie. So like do you have an American
- 1:12:35mom? Like what is the tsys?
- 1:12:37Like we were got it. Exactly understood.
- 1:12:39Why? Why they don't care.
- 1:12:40I mean, it's my villain origin story and I think it's why
- 1:12:44Jason. Who is Jason?
- 1:12:45Tell us who he is. What was I talking about?
- 1:12:50Oh, I use. So.
- 1:12:52Are you in the fat suit? I think it's really sad because
- 1:12:58the show doesn't do such a good job of providing a or refuting
- 1:13:06like this that phobia. The teachers are the ones that
- 1:13:11tell her like you got, you got to lose weight.
- 1:13:14And what was the teacher was? She was saying, like, you should
- 1:13:17eat breakfast like a queen and lunch like a whatever.
- 1:13:20And then my whole life growing up by the way.
- 1:13:22Yeah, it's a common everyday of my life advice for people if you
- 1:13:29want to lose weight weight like don't eat a large dinner, eat a
- 1:13:32large breakfast and whatever and I just feel like it's just
- 1:13:37perpetuating this terrible cycle.
- 1:13:39Kle of, you know, self-loathing and self-hatred that she ends up
- 1:13:45talking briefly about towards the end of the show where she
- 1:13:48was. Like, if I continue down this
- 1:13:50road, trying to be an idol and trying to get famous, they're
- 1:13:55just going to dig up these photos of me when I was fat.
- 1:13:58And I was happy when I was fat, I loved my life when I was fat,
- 1:14:02I was I didn't hate myself in the slightest and they're going
- 1:14:06to make me hate myself. That was cute and I was like,
- 1:14:11that's a lot, that's a nice. An incredibly nuanced take on,
- 1:14:17you know, being overweight in this in an industry, that just
- 1:14:21will not support that and the way that she ends up at the end
- 1:14:25of the show, which is, I don't know if you guys liked it or
- 1:14:27hated it or had no feelings toward it.
- 1:14:29But she ends up being like, an elementary school or preschool
- 1:14:32teacher teacher. Yeah.
- 1:14:34And she's singing to the students that's like her Outlet.
- 1:14:37Her musical Outlet is just to like sing to her.
- 1:14:39A little students and she's gained back some weight.
- 1:14:43Not like how she was with the beginning with the Prosthetics
- 1:14:46but she's gained back, some of some weight, and she's still
- 1:14:50semi dating Jason, I guess I don't even know what's going on
- 1:14:54there. But I think the way that they
- 1:14:59handled the relationship between her and Jason turned out to be a
- 1:15:02plus for me because Jason ended up liking her when she was fat.
- 1:15:10And the photo that he had on his phone background was her with
- 1:15:14all of the Prosthetics. And when she was at her
- 1:15:16heaviest, and I was like, that's something right.
- 1:15:20The American thing, he had to literally only thing that makes
- 1:15:25sense, right? I wish they had written it
- 1:15:28better. I guess.
- 1:15:29When, because he'd rejected her when she confessed her feelings
- 1:15:34and she was still overweight. So I was like I think that was a
- 1:15:39mess. I think he should have
- 1:15:40definitely done more, I guess. Romantically when she was
- 1:15:44overweight, then suddenly 200 days later and she starved
- 1:15:47herself to be. I you now suddenly he wants the
- 1:15:53confession out of her. I agree.
- 1:15:55But I say, I don't know. If I was the only one who liked
- 1:15:58saw it this way when he, like she was the one that offered,
- 1:16:02she's like, give me 200 days and I'll be, yeah.
- 1:16:03Wait, yeah. Yeah, he didn't.
- 1:16:05He knew that? It was like, the commercial
- 1:16:07like, right? Play so I thought like he was
- 1:16:10like, okay fine, lose the weight but it wasn't for him.
- 1:16:13It was no, it was for the better for the music.
- 1:16:15Exactly. It was for her career, liked it
- 1:16:18liked I liked it. Wasn't he wasn't at by, don't
- 1:16:20know if he wasn't expecting her to actually go through with it.
- 1:16:22I'm like lose the weight but I, at least appreciated that he
- 1:16:27really had no selfish interest there.
- 1:16:30He just wanted her to get her flowers.
- 1:16:33Yes, absolutely. Yeah, he was sort of tricking
- 1:16:37her into Losing weight so that she could further her career and
- 1:16:41get credit where she deserved credit, because they were
- 1:16:43stealing her voice like Singing in the Rain Styles.
- 1:16:46So I like ended up liking Jason as a character.
- 1:16:51I thought he had, you know, a lot of these characters had
- 1:16:55major growth throughout the series and Jason's one of them.
- 1:16:58I you I don't think she necessarily changed throughout
- 1:17:01the show, her character sort of say the same.
- 1:17:03She was very sweet and Just a lovely sort of character who
- 1:17:09loved herself if she was fat or skinny or whatever which is
- 1:17:14powerful, I thought that was powerful.
- 1:17:15That's what I said that it was cute when you mention the
- 1:17:17speech, like the fact that she said like I was happy then
- 1:17:20that's a powerful thing that I don't think we get to hear often
- 1:17:23on TV. People actually like being happy
- 1:17:26and accepting themselves when they're not at the weight that
- 1:17:28everyone wants them to be. Hmm.
- 1:17:30That was a I think it would have been even more powerful in the
- 1:17:33long run. If I use appearance sort of
- 1:17:36changed over time, Time. Right?
- 1:17:38She still looks exactly like she did in the show.
- 1:17:43She still is sort of ageless she's still super skinny and I
- 1:17:48don't know if there's any truth to this.
- 1:17:49I remember hearing some people like on Tick-Tock trying to
- 1:17:52trying to do the IU diet, which is like a sweet potato and a
- 1:17:57carrot or something like that. It was like something wild.
- 1:18:00Like, she basically doesn't eat that sounds about, right?
- 1:18:03And I was like, so then I'm like, this is like Not not that
- 1:18:09she necessarily needs to believe the message that she puts forth
- 1:18:13in any of the dramas or movies that she does, but it would be
- 1:18:17really nice if she just ate like a regular person wasn't eating
- 1:18:22sweet but to do sweet potatoes, a day or whatever it is.
- 1:18:25No idle eats like a normal person.
- 1:18:27It's sad. It's so sad.
- 1:18:29Like literally. No.
- 1:18:31I don't eat like a normal person.
- 1:18:32When did you see them when we see?
- 1:18:34Like, the biggest evidence is, when any of them go to the
- 1:18:36military like know. Jin just posted a picture, not
- 1:18:38to make everything about Idols all the time.
- 1:18:40But he just posted its entire drama and it's like oh they're
- 1:18:43eating three times a day and they look like a normal person.
- 1:18:46Every like BTS is one of the idol groups that tend to talk
- 1:18:50about dieting and starving themselves more than other
- 1:18:54groups do. And most of them eat one meal a
- 1:18:57day. If if, at all like they say
- 1:19:00specifically, like today is no food day.
- 1:19:03Like today, I only had a protein shake, they're all like to get
- 1:19:07there. Little jaw looks and everything
- 1:19:09they don't eat like any normal person.
- 1:19:12So I'm not surprised that if I if you told me, I you eats three
- 1:19:16little, like things of grass I would be like.
- 1:19:18Yeah, that makes sense. I don't not.
- 1:19:20Yeah. So who is the person that I was
- 1:19:24just talking to somebody about the oh ray rain.
- 1:19:26So I was talking to somebody about rain because rain is still
- 1:19:31keeping up, his insane physique. He's incredibly fit and I think
- 1:19:36he's still just eats one meal a day.
- 1:19:37Day. Yeah you call one like large
- 1:19:39meal a day famously eats only one meal a day.
- 1:19:42Like the most of the people will talk about this openly because
- 1:19:46for them Eating Disorders are normal, right?
- 1:19:49And that way. So yeah, it's it's incredibly
- 1:19:53disheartening like Kai talks about it a lot.
- 1:19:56He says to all his fans he's like you guys need to eat not
- 1:20:02like us because we don't eat correctly.
- 1:20:05If this wasn't my job, I would eat like Normal person, but
- 1:20:09because I chose this life, I have to eat the way that I have
- 1:20:12to to maintain the body but you guys shouldn't follow what we do
- 1:20:17because it's not good. You know, they did say that in
- 1:20:20the show, I think. One of the teachers was like,
- 1:20:22you know, part of this career or part of this job is maintaining
- 1:20:26this look right. And if everyone could do it then
- 1:20:32they would but not everyone can do it.
- 1:20:34So that's why people respect and admire this sort of Of
- 1:20:37aspirational, look that you project as a KPop star and I was
- 1:20:42like, okay cool. So we're just going to starve
- 1:20:44people and create Eating Disorders, left and right just
- 1:20:48to maintain up. Prop up this industry and I'm
- 1:20:51like I'm like this is all problematic, right?
- 1:20:53Like nothing is is okay about idolizing these people that look
- 1:21:00like this? When what do they have to do to
- 1:21:02create this isn't natural, you know.
- 1:21:05And I'm sure a lot of girls especially because you're my
- 1:21:07Mentioned earlier like the, they had a heavy demographic of
- 1:21:10teenagers watching the show back there.
- 1:21:12Yeah. Tried the diet that I use
- 1:21:14character did because they kind of showed some sketches on TV of
- 1:21:17like the food that she would eat in the morning and right night,
- 1:21:21I'm sure many girls tried it themselves, just to get the same
- 1:21:25results kind of thing and it's just not healthy for the society
- 1:21:29as a whole. But Korea is not there yet, not
- 1:21:32yet. Do you know, I My sister has a
- 1:21:36friend or an acquaintance, who is Asian and she said that she
- 1:21:41was a trainee. And I when my sister told me
- 1:21:43that I was like, oh fuck like what did she?
- 1:21:45What was the group that she was possibly going to be in?
- 1:21:47And they were she was like, she said that she was going to be an
- 1:21:50SNSD Girls Generation allows like you're fucking joking.
- 1:21:54So the reason why she quit was because they wanted her to get a
- 1:21:59bunch of plastic surgery, but on top of that, she is on the
- 1:22:03normal side as far as Height, I guess she's like 54 so and they
- 1:22:07wanted her to get leg extension surgery, which is a major
- 1:22:11freaking surgery for her to get a little more height for her to
- 1:22:16be taller. And she was like, now I'm
- 1:22:18tapping out, like, I'm not doing that and I was like, are you
- 1:22:22kidding? Like even?
- 1:22:23I didn't think to that effect. Oh no, they would go.
- 1:22:27Yeah, so I was I mean what other podcast episode?
- 1:22:32Can I talk about this crazy story?
- 1:22:35But, yeah, I was like insane. What are we here?
- 1:22:38Nothing is really surprising. When it comes to like agencies,
- 1:22:42and the lens idle Idols will go to.
- 1:22:44And I had seen recently, some, I guess, Wes tarnish, interviewer
- 1:22:50went to some K-pop group. Like, I don't know if their
- 1:22:52trainees or what they are, like a girl group to interview them
- 1:22:56at their dorms, and I don't know why they ended up opening the
- 1:22:58fridge. And it was only eggs and chicken
- 1:23:02like eggs and chicken breast. Like, they don't have they can
- 1:23:05Not cheat because they don't have a way to cheat and get
- 1:23:07food. Like they genuinely, don't,
- 1:23:09they're not afforded, they're not given because they live on
- 1:23:12the stipend of the company. So, whatever they're allowed to
- 1:23:14buy, like they don't really have money of their own.
- 1:23:17So, eating is not a priority. And plastic surgery is literally
- 1:23:22for everyone, and they have to just do these crazy things,
- 1:23:25because they get brainwashed into thinking that this is the
- 1:23:27only way that they'll succeed, right, and that they have to do
- 1:23:30these things. So it doesn't truly, like, I
- 1:23:34don't discuss It is closed, which is why, which is why going
- 1:23:38back to our non-spoiler section. We were so pissed about jyp
- 1:23:43being. So the champion of, yeah, of the
- 1:23:47kids that, you know, I should get all the awards based on
- 1:23:52their talent and nothing about looks and nothing about this.
- 1:23:56Yeah, shut up. Like get out.
- 1:23:57The Justin has current lineup of groups it see.
- 1:24:02Oh my God! They're everywhere.
- 1:24:05Time. I look at them, I it just makes
- 1:24:08me like my whole like stomach and like everything just starts
- 1:24:12to like, flip over and do a bunch of things because there's
- 1:24:16no way, there's no way like there's zero like muscle like,
- 1:24:21no, well, body fat in general, but like like these girls are
- 1:24:25like like skin on bone like because, you know, it's a
- 1:24:29contrast to see twice because twice, actually, like they look
- 1:24:32more normal and they look like they have Have meat on them and
- 1:24:36they are not seemingly at least like starving, but it see.
- 1:24:40Looks like they're starving like the, the clavicles like that
- 1:24:45hallowed like faces. It's not good.
- 1:24:48The city did not good. The hit the head like you can
- 1:24:52see it like you can see it like come.
- 1:24:54It's just you see that and then you see what he was trying and
- 1:24:59is still trying to portray himself as it's like my guy.
- 1:25:02No, no. Okay, well, okay.
- 1:25:07So let's talk about games, dookie on, and a little bit
- 1:25:10about his relationship with Susy because when we first meet Kim
- 1:25:15sohyun, he's literally wearing a fertilizer bag as a costume.
- 1:25:19I never wore that his talents contest in his small hick town
- 1:25:25and Susie's like the city girls. And I have this Trope of like
- 1:25:30the country boy in the city girl but she Lies to him outright to
- 1:25:37get him to come to Seoul. And it's so sad.
- 1:25:42I mean, you just how do I put it?
- 1:25:46I'm never on Susie side like throughout the show.
- 1:25:49Her character is just horrendous and even when she sort of sobers
- 1:25:53up and learns to feel and learns how to be a human and learns,
- 1:25:57how to have empathy and sympathy for others.
- 1:26:00I'm still like, yeah, I don't like this bitch.
- 1:26:03And what I don't know how you guys felt about their
- 1:26:07relationship in the way that you know, the whole scene of him
- 1:26:11running. After the bus and one just to
- 1:26:15ask you when she was leaving his town.
- 1:26:18And she run, he runs after the bus and she tells him that she
- 1:26:22likes him. But oh, I like you, what come to
- 1:26:25Seoul. She this is the only time I'll
- 1:26:27defend her the entire time. She asked him.
- 1:26:30What would it take? Like, what do you want me to
- 1:26:31hear? Ye so you can come like she if
- 1:26:35you fall for that, that's on you about.
- 1:26:37Like it's it's not, it's not her like wussy.
- 1:26:41What's sad? Is that?
- 1:26:42He knows that she's lying because he turns around and he's
- 1:26:46like, clutching his chest like his, if he's just like
- 1:26:48completely stirred and he goes, oh, she's such a bad.
- 1:26:52She's so terrible. She's lying.
- 1:26:54I know she's lying to me and you're immediately on his team
- 1:26:59on his side because he's so adorable.
- 1:27:01So lovable, so gullible and he still goes to Soul even though
- 1:27:07he his common sense is telling him, this bitch is lying to him
- 1:27:10just to get To go to Seoul and join the school.
- 1:27:15I appreciated the fact that she I think this is the only drama
- 1:27:21that I've seen where they take the main characters, bitchiness
- 1:27:25to this level because there has been other dramas where the main
- 1:27:29lead the mail for the main female lead is a little bit
- 1:27:32bitchy, but they have a lot of redeeming qualities.
- 1:27:35This one, she barely has any so it's very it's very unique.
- 1:27:41Because it's very unique II. Do appreciate the fact that they
- 1:27:46even when she changes her core is still very much the same.
- 1:27:50There isn't really a very big 180 because that 180 would have
- 1:27:54been even less believable than like, right.
- 1:27:59A lot of things are unbelievable here, but like, that would have
- 1:28:02been just like this is your guys aren't need a break right now.
- 1:28:05Like this is too much, so I do like the fact that even when she
- 1:28:10changes for the good, it's It's not that good still because
- 1:28:15she's such a bitch like so terrible.
- 1:28:19Yeah. It's yeah, did you guys laugh
- 1:28:23though? She stays at their house at his
- 1:28:25house, is a pooping with his mom.
- 1:28:27Well sipping seen. I hated he so she's like I got
- 1:28:32out of the bathroom, they live in the middle of nowhere and the
- 1:28:35moms like okay you know, Kim Sue.
- 1:28:37He owns character will take you and she goes.
- 1:28:40Why do I need somebody to go with him?
- 1:28:42If with me and they're like oh the wild boars are it could
- 1:28:46could come up on you and like wreck you and she's like what
- 1:28:49there's a freaking out. Outhouse and it's like we said,
- 1:28:53freezing in the middle of winter, so there's snow on the
- 1:28:55ground. He walks her to this Outhouse
- 1:28:57and she's poop shy understandably.
- 1:29:00And I think she tells him, like, why don't you sing something for
- 1:29:04me and he's like, no, why don't you sing?
- 1:29:05And she starts singing. This song Only Hope from.
- 1:29:11I know it from A Walk to Remember.
- 1:29:13Do you guys remember that movie? Oh my God, that song.
- 1:29:19It's just a suspension of disbelief.
- 1:29:22How am I supposed to like understand?
- 1:29:24And and problem that you can sing while you are literally
- 1:29:27pooping like pulling? No, Mom.
- 1:29:29Aunt. And you're already pooped.
- 1:29:32I like that. Yeah gonna work out they have
- 1:29:35phones like she could have just played something true true like
- 1:29:39it's it just I hate it. I don't like the toilet humor
- 1:29:43that a lot of kdramas use It's not, it's not funny, it's cheap
- 1:29:49and unnecessary to be quite honest.
- 1:29:53You guys know, like, the first drama that I watched was Hong
- 1:29:55Kong, and there's a lot of poop humor in that drama.
- 1:29:58And I remember texting Lauda, every time that I saw him like I
- 1:30:01don't get it, like, I don't get it.
- 1:30:03And again, I'm still less than 10 K dramas and to make a drama
- 1:30:07like experience. And every time I see it, I'm
- 1:30:09just like, well, why? I get like, it's lowbrow it,
- 1:30:13bro. It's a cultural thing but it
- 1:30:15just doesn't make sense to me. Yeah.
- 1:30:17Yeah. So they had this whole CC seen
- 1:30:20worse. Susie's pooping.
- 1:30:22And she sings the song, I could not write this myself.
- 1:30:26Anyway, one of my favorite things about Suzanne to also his
- 1:30:30relationship with his mom was really sweet and when they're
- 1:30:32all sweet each other. The solder either dialect.
- 1:30:35Oh my God. I heard it was just so so cute.
- 1:30:39He's talking and I like the whole move the whole show and
- 1:30:44when he's with her he's like heavier.
- 1:30:46Also miss our country bumpkin can't like you know not doesn't
- 1:30:50know anything about life ends up in Japan.
- 1:30:52Speaking like an English to the like understanding the English.
- 1:30:57You know, it's a girl. How many things do you want me
- 1:31:00to like, how do you want? How much do you want me to gas
- 1:31:02like myself for me to think that this is actually like feasible
- 1:31:06any of this? And I don't know the answer that
- 1:31:15but still here on ends up being artists K right by the end.
- 1:31:19He's the big artists performing at the Grammys which that didn't
- 1:31:23look like the Grammys by any stretch.
- 1:31:25But okay more. Especially as dismal.
- 1:31:28No. No, no.
- 1:31:32But I kind of like that he was, he made it, you know, even
- 1:31:36though they had this whole whole freakin medical drama with him
- 1:31:41and his Progressive hearing loss in the tinnitus and all of that
- 1:31:45was like, I remember that being a huge deal, a huge reveal as
- 1:31:50well. When I first watched the show
- 1:31:52was like, they had this scene where he's watching Susie and
- 1:31:56Tech kiss on the ferris wheel, which was like, oh my God, what
- 1:32:00a blow and then he like collapses and I'm like, what's
- 1:32:02going on? The start of the very next
- 1:32:04episode is them, is him in the hospital receiving this Gnosis
- 1:32:08that he's got progressing here a progressive hearing loss, and
- 1:32:11he's got to sort of shore up for eventual deafness and I was
- 1:32:18like, oh my God I like was really cut up about it because
- 1:32:22he's just getting going. He's just starting to train and
- 1:32:27sing and dance and all this stuff and now he can't sing
- 1:32:29anymore. I mean, it was this is very old
- 1:32:33school kdrama, but go through all his It's like, you know,
- 1:32:38fighting his demons thing. And yes, thank creep because or
- 1:32:42like the creeps on truck comes on because of course creep has
- 1:32:45to be a part of every piece of like legendary to me or if not
- 1:32:50it's not legendary. I love the fact that he cut his
- 1:32:54hair and got a 0 earring like a piercing bad boy.
- 1:33:00He looked it, though. It's okay with me.
- 1:33:02I remember me. And then he was like, fine for
- 1:33:09two episodes and like he didn't have a hearing problem anymore.
- 1:33:12Uh-huh. Unlike later, I would come back
- 1:33:14or it wouldn't. And then I'm like, there were
- 1:33:16entire videos on YouTube back. When I don't know, a bunch of
- 1:33:19YouTubers that I used to watch that, they were doing singing
- 1:33:22challenges. We're like singing with noise
- 1:33:25canceling things, so I can't hear my own like voice.
- 1:33:28You can't sing. Cannot if you can't hear
- 1:33:31yourself, no, like the unbelievable - of this isn't
- 1:33:35this, this tumult. I'm high.
- 1:33:38This all I want. Yeah.
- 1:33:41I mean in 2012 or 13. I was like I don't think that's
- 1:33:44true but I just want to believe it.
- 1:33:46And then today I really we watching it.
- 1:33:48I'm like, this is impossible. You can't.
- 1:33:52You just can't. You need to be able to hear
- 1:33:55yourself in order to sing. It's just, he can't just find
- 1:33:59him. Then he had there were this
- 1:34:00thing where he was trying to learn Perfect Pitch and they
- 1:34:03were like, you can do it. You could do it.
- 1:34:05Like no, you can't hear you. Speaking of disbelief and just
- 1:34:14out there, the fact that we're supposed to accept and forgive
- 1:34:21bakey for throwing a pot, trying to murder her friend.
- 1:34:35That happened and we're okay with her character by the end of
- 1:34:38the show, we're like, you know what, it wasn't that bad like
- 1:34:42this is a case of it's a it's a criminal case that they never
- 1:34:47sort of went into the even the teacher Kang was I we're not
- 1:34:52going to talk about like the murder that almost noticed.
- 1:34:54She was missing the bun. How does she fix it it?
- 1:34:57Because Tech like found the button and then she, no, no,
- 1:35:01definitely had a, yeah, yeah. She By the time he confronted
- 1:35:05her and then he was like, oh I guess, but again I don't know.
- 1:35:08Like how does she notice that the fun went flying hottest, you
- 1:35:10know to fix it or change her jacket or whatever like he was
- 1:35:16an a-plus-plus. Murderer I guess because she
- 1:35:22knew what to fix the let her Alibi was okay and tecton.
- 1:35:27It's just Spector anymore. But also how she starts with
- 1:35:30like the braids and things with like oh she's matching.
- 1:35:33She's matching bases. He's character to team, like the
- 1:35:36haircut, which actually suited her really well.
- 1:35:39And when they go into, like the Showcase later they add these
- 1:35:42horrid extension cord that you do you like the hair, it looked
- 1:35:47like a mullet, that was true. So like revived or not, because
- 1:35:51it's just too pollitos. Like two little strands of hair.
- 1:35:54It's not even like a snot. It's tear, it wasn't like
- 1:35:58layers. You know what I'm saying?
- 1:36:00Like, if you're going to do that, you have to put like
- 1:36:02multiple layers that it wasn't just like her Kirill hair and
- 1:36:06then long extensions. Again, the budget was limited
- 1:36:09and very it looked awful. And she looked terrible.
- 1:36:14She saw so, talking about terrible.
- 1:36:16She starts dancing, too. I think fly on the Wall by Miley
- 1:36:20Cyrus. There's a early episode.
- 1:36:23She's dancing, dip. All of those dancing sequences
- 1:36:28and scenes were really bad. Like I know Mom can't dance and
- 1:36:31like they're talented but the way that the either the camera
- 1:36:35work or the way that they didn't have enough time to practice
- 1:36:38those dance sequences, it wasn't good like I don't know what was
- 1:36:41it like sharp, it wasn't clean choreo.
- 1:36:44It was very messy and very like, but they were trying to make up
- 1:36:48her with some of the Editing that they were doing.
- 1:36:50It was like cutting back to make it worse which made it worse in.
- 1:36:54Yeah, it wasn't for these being real Idols.
- 1:36:58I didn't feel at all but they were dancing to the caliber that
- 1:37:02they should be. It was giving like the So You
- 1:37:05Think You Can Dance contest and that like cannot dance and is
- 1:37:08still going to audition, but it's just getting airtime
- 1:37:10because the show needs diversity or whatever or links up the butt
- 1:37:13of the joke. That's what I was giving.
- 1:37:15There was a lot of Butt of the joke like meta hilarity that was
- 1:37:21happening throughout the show. And there was, I think there was
- 1:37:25like a jyp song that they played, don't leave me early on
- 1:37:31and they started playing what was it like Genie by SNSD as
- 1:37:38well. They were dancing to that song
- 1:37:40outside of the chicken shop. Like this is like current stuff
- 1:37:44and if you don't know who jyp was you wouldn't get The needle
- 1:37:49drop of his 90s song, you know what I'm saying?
- 1:37:53There was also a lot of like If you know, you know type of jokes
- 1:37:59about being a trainee like the yeah, the jyp test dance thing
- 1:38:04that they deal with like the wave-like.
- 1:38:06Only funny part of jyp being there.
- 1:38:09Like the only time that I was like, okay I would have been
- 1:38:11fine if you were here for this, just one scene but the rest of
- 1:38:14it. But because at that point, like
- 1:38:16they kind of showed take you on a little bit and he really could
- 1:38:20not hold his laughter. Yeah, because he was just like
- 1:38:23this is this is my life right now.
- 1:38:26Just you might not have seen those.
- 1:38:27This was more like Kpop content, but I think I came out last
- 1:38:30year, like rain, when to see stray cats.
- 1:38:33And he kind of talked about the backstory of that of, like jyp a
- 1:38:37strain to help him with like a choreography training program
- 1:38:42for trainees. And then he was the one that
- 1:38:45came up with this. Like wait, wait.
- 1:38:48And like every jyp trainee has to master that in order for them
- 1:38:53to be able to remain and be Right.
- 1:38:58So that's why that's a big joke for like the idol Community or
- 1:39:03whatever people in the jyp know I've heard of the wave.
- 1:39:06I don't think I've seen that Rain video though.
- 1:39:09So I definitely have to go back and watch that.
- 1:39:11But I mean, I'm 2012. Did I know that that was a
- 1:39:15thing? No, no.
- 1:39:16Of course, it's the girlies that know, and the ones who don't
- 1:39:21like shit out of luck. Yeah, like oh sorry.
- 1:39:25I was gonna go ahead there scene.
- 1:39:26So you can finish I thought here.
- 1:39:28No. No, go ahead.
- 1:39:29I was just gonna say how, like Jason wasn't at the actual
- 1:39:32showcase, and he still made the group.
- 1:39:36Yes. Like I just
- 1:39:51like in the first episode when they're like, or was it the
- 1:39:55second episode when they decided they're going to go to Kieran
- 1:39:58High School when Becky like does a split and she's like, see I
- 1:40:02could make it to and it's like, okay, so you're going to just do
- 1:40:05a split and not gonna get you Well, I'm the arch nemesis Becky
- 1:40:30unforgivable. He's so good looking at.
- 1:40:32Okay. Yeah, I don't know.
- 1:40:34He's like, oh my dad would have liked taking me to the US.
- 1:40:37Sir, you would have found your way back.
- 1:40:38I am done with you. That is treason.
- 1:40:41That is an ox top. You know that is absolutely how
- 1:40:44I feel felt Then and Now on re-watch that Tech did some like
- 1:40:49unforgivable like fully sins here and not the anything was
- 1:40:55directly. You know, it was not malicious
- 1:41:00but he should know the meaning of these things, right?
- 1:41:05Performing with Becky abandoning the team debuting without them.
- 1:41:10Even though he like was like, oh let's promise to be on the same
- 1:41:13stage together and perform together whatever, like he just
- 1:41:16like completely went solo and all this stuff.
- 1:41:20So, another text that I sound louder while I was watching, was
- 1:41:23this entire show, could have been one episode had, they
- 1:41:26actually like texted each other and Absolutely 100% was like,
- 1:41:30hey, let's communicate talk to you later.
- 1:41:32Like my dad's about to kick me out of the country and kidnap
- 1:41:34me. Like, you know, it's just,
- 1:41:36there's something so annoying about text character when it
- 1:41:40comes to those, like Middle episodes where he's at odds with
- 1:41:42Susie and the rest of the underdog kids in the regular
- 1:41:45prep class. Because he's that guy that's
- 1:41:48like less talk. Like every time you see me like
- 1:41:50let's talk, let's go here to talk and I'm like that is so
- 1:41:54freaking annoying. You ever had?
- 1:41:55Like a let's talk person your life.
- 1:41:58Looks like there's nothing to talk about like we're done.
- 1:42:04Oh my God. I was so annoyed and also how
- 1:42:07they like debuted and then they're perfect.
- 1:42:09And they're winning like music shows for six months and then
- 1:42:11they come back. And they're like, guys, we can't
- 1:42:13graduate if we don't. Like when there's nothing on
- 1:42:16spreading hours, we don't have enough credit hours to graduate
- 1:42:19from this bogus school. So you have to go back and start
- 1:42:22taking classes again. My I just remembered know
- 1:42:30because, like, I just went back to like the other the other side
- 1:42:35of the story with the teacher, the dad, and the mom owned the
- 1:42:39fact that this father left or left his two, daughters in Korea
- 1:42:44by themselves, with his ex-wife's.
- 1:42:48Like, I don't know, if this doesn't make any lick of sense,
- 1:42:53is that Susie's back story is that her dad fucking I fled the
- 1:42:58country and was trying to Stage a comeback of his own and get
- 1:43:03back on his feet, financially in the States but he abandoned his
- 1:43:08two kids in Korea and was like why don't you guys go State not
- 1:43:13with family or some other like person that he knows good?
- 1:43:16Well enough. He was like, why don't you stay
- 1:43:19with this man? Who owes me all supposed to do?
- 1:43:24Steer your mom. And had an affair with your mom.
- 1:43:33And, you know, I still don't understand if they knew that she
- 1:43:36died, or if they just thought that she liked left them.
- 1:43:40No, no, they knew that she got sick and died but they just
- 1:43:43didn't have this whole getting sick and dying to live during
- 1:43:56this Was babies. He has sung the child character,
- 1:44:01the child actors. Oh yes, and her little sister
- 1:44:03there. He cannot seen like the fact of
- 1:44:06how much she loved Tech and like would kiss him every chance that
- 1:44:08she could. And that's the end of the end
- 1:44:10were like she's holding not at the end but like when she's so
- 1:44:12little she's holding text hand. And so he on goes for it and she
- 1:44:16goes black and like a knocks it out of the way.
- 1:44:18I was like, oh my queen like that little child was
- 1:44:21everything. So that was my third and final
- 1:44:23reason to live and that. Yeah, she's very much a Vibe.
- 1:44:26The Unseen Was a little weird though.
- 1:44:28A little crazy with all grown up and she was like, yeah.
- 1:44:31Okay, hold on. Let's let's pause on that.
- 1:44:32Let's talk because I have a couple more things and then we
- 1:44:34can get to the ending scene in Little Rock this episode.
- 1:44:37So, you said in the pre, in the general non spoilery section, we
- 1:44:42talked about other 2 p.m. members that made an appearance
- 1:44:45in the show and it's cause there were these crazy cameos.
- 1:44:48Like up the other members Nichkhun made his Cameo dressed
- 1:44:53as like Romeo lying on the ground pretty sleepy.
- 1:44:57Playing dead. And then, they also had this
- 1:44:59score p, played it on his phone, a Franco, zeffirelli's Romeo and
- 1:45:04Juliet. So that famous score was playing
- 1:45:08on his phone and then I felt like the whole jingle that he
- 1:45:12was a part of because that's when these soul I use voice like
- 1:45:15do this. Sing sing this jingle to sell.
- 1:45:19I think it was a cell phone or something.
- 1:45:21Yeah. Okay.
- 1:45:23That whole thing reminded me of like The Lollipop Song from back
- 1:45:27in the day, you know Lollipop song with I recently heard about
- 1:45:30the lollipop thing but I don't know what it is.
- 1:45:33Me neither okay So in a nutshell I'm actually like looking it up.
- 1:45:40Oh know if I look up lollipop just give me a little Wayne.
- 1:45:42That's not the right thing. Lollipop with big bang and 21.
- 1:45:49Okay. So this is weird.
- 1:45:56So there's a song called love, okay.
- 1:45:59Oh my God, there's obviously on it while they were asking her
- 1:46:03like oh, you know like the iPhone this was out.
- 1:46:09So when you debuted what was the phone?
- 1:46:11And she goes lollipop and I was like I don't know, I don't know.
- 1:46:13I'm not an okay. So this is the first paragraph
- 1:46:16of the Wikipedia so it's legitimate information.
- 1:46:21Soak a lollipop is a song by Big Bang in 21 created to promote a
- 1:46:25cell phone by LG Scion, it interpolates a 1958 Lollipop
- 1:46:30written by Julius Dixon. And Beverly, Ross song, achieves
- 1:46:32top spot on the various online charts.
- 1:46:34It was like super popular and a lollipop is used to debut 21
- 1:46:39unofficially as it does not serve technically as their debut
- 1:46:43single. So then they followed that up
- 1:46:45with their official debut song. Fire.
- 1:46:47Which is, if have you seen the music video for a lollipop?
- 1:46:51Oh my God. Okay, so this was like a whole
- 1:46:53freaking thing. This is back in 2009, right?
- 1:46:57They basically used this custom song Ang this custom jingle so
- 1:47:01to speak, lollipop with big bang and 21 singing this song to
- 1:47:07promote this phone. And if you look at the music
- 1:47:09video, it's like a commercial for this phone for this LG phone
- 1:47:12or whatever. This doesn't ring any bells at
- 1:47:16all. No, no.
- 1:47:17We haven't scared. Like again, I only know that
- 1:47:19it's CL and 21 because I just watched the interview like two
- 1:47:22days ago, where she mentioned it.
- 1:47:24Okay. So that's what she's talking
- 1:47:25about is this LG Sion phone or whatever and lollipop.
- 1:47:29I encourage you to anyone, listening to look up the song,
- 1:47:32but lollipop, and this part of this show Dream High where they
- 1:47:38are taking like this jingle and promoting a cell phone with to
- 1:47:43K-pop Idols, essentially. Is to a tee.
- 1:47:46What lollipop was got it. Okay.
- 1:47:50Wow, you see, you can see the girl it's just, you know, I
- 1:47:56guess. Yeah, I guess we have to talk
- 1:47:59about the God of dance. Oh God sequence with jyp in this
- 1:48:04red silk suit, dancing to Michael Jackson's Billie Jean.
- 1:48:12I definitely fast forward over that this time around.
- 1:48:17I quit watched I watched judging Lee.
- 1:48:23I don't know who this man thinks he is.
- 1:48:25Right? Right.
- 1:48:29I couldn't. That's that's my thing too.
- 1:48:31Is like he thinks he's hot shit. He really, really, really done.
- 1:48:36He does. Hmm.
- 1:48:39I'm sorry for his did a whole concert in New York and La where
- 1:48:43they ended up having to put the tickets on Groupon and giving
- 1:48:45them out for free, just to be able to fill the venue somewhat
- 1:48:50and he's out here like posting whenever his stupid song came
- 1:48:53out, the groov box on and he's like, I gotta get, gotta get
- 1:48:56with like the stupidest fucking Corey of all time.
- 1:48:59He like some people were like posting challenges actually.
- 1:49:03Like you, I don't know why trying to get his attention and
- 1:49:06then he like posted and he's like here, here's a Toriel to
- 1:49:10help people like yourself. and like, he actually thinks he is
- 1:49:15better than literally anyone like it's terrible.
- 1:49:22He's got a complex. Yeah, but in that saying that
- 1:49:28same episode, The Girl Who Stole I use voice is like, who is
- 1:49:33that? Girl, I've never seen her around
- 1:49:35here before. It's I you And Jason is she's
- 1:49:39like taking a oh just because you lose some weight doesn't
- 1:49:42mean you can debut and he goes well you debuted and you're
- 1:49:46talentless singer. So he's like if you're a
- 1:49:48five-second thing or whatever. Yeah, that was very that was a
- 1:49:51good burn. That was like, oh my God.
- 1:49:55I love that burns so much. I thought it was a plus plus
- 1:49:59it's up there for me with sing to me.
- 1:50:01Paulo just like one of the sickest Burns in history.
- 1:50:05It's like so stupid, I have This weird list in my head, okay?
- 1:50:11And, you know, when he said that a couple of Idols came into my
- 1:50:16mind. Oh God, that are.
- 1:50:18Who were they named them? Oh, I'm not gonna do that.
- 1:50:22Oh no. Some people don't mind.
- 1:50:32You know, what I wrote down this is just stupid, but I just saw
- 1:50:35it and I made me laugh that Becky went Showgirls with the
- 1:50:41Pearl. Spilling thing with like with
- 1:50:43the Thumbtack in the shoe and all the other like nasty things
- 1:50:47that she did during the show, like going back to your thing of
- 1:50:50like forgiving her for literal assassination attempts, right?
- 1:50:55And they're both of those characters were Redeemable, it's
- 1:51:02true. Did you feel any type of way
- 1:51:04about the Dream High song? Yeah, I mean, it's it's good for
- 1:51:11what it was, I guess. Like, I'm not going to play it
- 1:51:14but maybe I should add a lot more Nostalgia for it because
- 1:51:17when they started playing it again and I was like oh my God
- 1:51:19it's the dream, my song. Yeah really excited about that
- 1:51:23was like yeah it was cute like it's better than the drama I
- 1:51:27guess for sure in terms of like quality and delivering what it
- 1:51:31like it did what I needed to do because Rama didn't.
- 1:51:37Wow. But last Cami, I think I have
- 1:51:40here from 2 p.m. is the chan-sung Cambio where he's
- 1:51:45Meats like the house Noona in the snow boxer, back to the
- 1:51:49house and like covers her head with a scarf and she kisses him
- 1:51:52because she's drunk and when she pulls back it's actually like
- 1:51:56the nightclub Oishi. So I think I had a problem with
- 1:52:03it because there's an obvious large age gap between them.
- 1:52:08Between ton song in 2011. And this this lady, I mean, she
- 1:52:15had money problems and alcoholism was one of them.
- 1:52:17So she was an alcoholic. Yeah.
- 1:52:23So that was the chan-sung Cameo there.
- 1:52:26There was also a cameo by some of the Super Junior guys and the
- 1:52:30radio station young Hawkins off. They had like an interview show.
- 1:52:33Well, yeah, with are you? Yeah.
- 1:52:38I think a lot of my memories are memories of Dream, High are of
- 1:52:42them in the classroom, learning different things.
- 1:52:44And one of them that I remembered vividly was the pitch
- 1:52:47test of where they sing the site read, and there's two of them,
- 1:52:51like, doing it at the same time, they have to have my eyes and
- 1:52:53stuff and I was like that is super memorable memorable and I
- 1:52:55remember that whole thing that whole scene from when I had
- 1:53:00originally watched Dream High, the teacher who talked about
- 1:53:02like, cords and things. Like I thought that I was like,
- 1:53:05oh look, an actual education, a woman, what?
- 1:53:07Yeah. Yeah, so let's get into some
- 1:53:12endgame episodes because Becky gets sexually assaulted by the
- 1:53:17company president and text saves her and then he gets cancelled
- 1:53:21and there's this whole Scandal because there's footage of him
- 1:53:23beating up this their company president.
- 1:53:26And I watch this, you know, in 2012, 2013 like way.
- 1:53:33This was shot way before the me to movement way before
- 1:53:36Weinstein. And all the tests were exposed
- 1:53:40and sent to jail and stuff, but This is sad as shit, okay?
- 1:53:47Like I thought this was really sad, and I think the only
- 1:53:50drawback to this storylines inclusion is that it is meant to
- 1:53:55redeem Becky. Yeah, you know what, solder
- 1:54:00that? We went through me to on this
- 1:54:02out of the world, but Korea hasn't correct.
- 1:54:05And not just like women and girl groups.
- 1:54:08But boys, and boy groups are also suffering heavily from like
- 1:54:15complete mismanagement, misconduct and abuse some of its
- 1:54:20sexual from their managers. So, that's really what is not
- 1:54:26guy. That it was ahead of its time
- 1:54:29and it's still comments heavily on the victim shaming that has.
- 1:54:36Yeah. Right.
- 1:54:37They didn't want the key to come teachers.
- 1:54:40Yeah. Those two teachers teachers are
- 1:54:41kind of irrelevant but they basically give the viewer
- 1:54:45commentary the whole time records show there like a good
- 1:54:48narration for like a pulse check on what Korean people were like
- 1:54:52back. Then a lot of it really hasn't
- 1:54:55changed yet but they were really like You know, giving everyone
- 1:55:00the opinions. I mean, I did in this case was
- 1:55:02mushy that she said it like more specifically, because she was so
- 1:55:06attached to protecting Becky, but it was like, she has a
- 1:55:09Scarlet Letter. Now, like she won't be left
- 1:55:12alone, no one will believe her. And even it happened, they kind
- 1:55:15of play it out of the TV station of like, well.
- 1:55:18But, you know, the rumor is that she was the one who seduced him.
- 1:55:21So yeah, that's it's very real still today.
- 1:55:25So that's what ya get Super unfortunate.
- 1:55:29And what's sad is that you can't say like oh things have changed.
- 1:55:33Yeah, I know. So it's very sad to me.
- 1:55:37I think it was used to redeem both her and Tech because like
- 1:55:41him selflessly, basically throwing himself under the bus
- 1:55:44and throwing his dad and his campaign under the bus.
- 1:55:47So yeah. Protect us girls, you know,
- 1:55:50dignity and image. Yeah, yeah that's a lot but
- 1:55:56teacher, she has As a great Arc as well because she's like the
- 1:56:01principal's daughter which was like a whole like kdrama reveal
- 1:56:04as well. But she started out as this very
- 1:56:06cold and calculating teacher, she's cutting her losses with
- 1:56:10students deemed unworthy or a lost cause and she, and she was
- 1:56:15the one who encouraged Becky to treat to win the Showcase solo.
- 1:56:19So over the course of the show, she's kind of learned the error
- 1:56:22of her ways and now subscribes to the same school of thinking
- 1:56:26as teacher Kang. You know, you should help the
- 1:56:29kids lift them up, encourage them and not trample, on their
- 1:56:32dreams. And their job isn't necessarily
- 1:56:34to be realistic. It's to be optimistic and to
- 1:56:37help them as much as they can. And, you know, it was nice to
- 1:56:41see her go through her own arc and be so supportive of Becky
- 1:56:46during her time of need towards during the whole sexual,
- 1:56:50harassment thing or sexual assault, Scandal that broke
- 1:56:53because she just simply told the truth and just to get Tech out.
- 1:56:57Of hot water here because he was getting lampooned fleetly.
- 1:57:03I didn't like the extreme to what she took.
- 1:57:05It her transformation again, the whole like the flower clip at
- 1:57:09the on the top. No, no.
- 1:57:10That was too cutesy that but that is.
- 1:57:12That's a Trope. Yeah.
- 1:57:15And like just her character, the end ventilation and the AQ, you
- 1:57:20know, it was too far like the pendulum swung to like far to
- 1:57:25the other side. I am.
- 1:57:27Understand why she ended up falling for mr.
- 1:57:30Teacher, savior person, and all of that.
- 1:57:33But she and her defense. So when she was like evil at the
- 1:57:37beginning she didn't say she was in favor of cheating because she
- 1:57:40wasn't, she was right. Okay.
- 1:57:42With lying to an extent and what she told Becky was like this
- 1:57:46girl's lying. So don't feel bad about taking
- 1:57:50her spot. She didn't say go put a
- 1:57:52thumbtack in her shoes so she's like right?
- 1:57:54We unable to do the thing. Uh-huh, when Becky, try to like
- 1:57:57turn. Turn that on her and be like,
- 1:57:59you're the reason why. Now, I don't feel anything when
- 1:58:01I try to murder people. That's not, that's not what she
- 1:58:08said. That's not what happened, like
- 1:58:09you you were falling a murderer before.
- 1:58:12Yeah. So yeah, absolutely related
- 1:58:16Concepts over here. One thing that I wanted to touch
- 1:58:19on about Susie and Tech and Susie on which is like their
- 1:58:25love triangle is that they said Of tech as the female there.
- 1:58:30Sorry. That's of you the male lead, you
- 1:58:33know, the person that she's going to end up with because
- 1:58:35he's just this archetypal like bad boy and they had all this
- 1:58:40history together. They met as children and he's
- 1:58:42just so cool and you just feel like they're going to end up
- 1:58:46together. She likes him for sure at some
- 1:58:48points throughout the show but Kim Soo hyun's character is set
- 1:58:52up as the second male lead and you never feel necessarily.
- 1:58:55They're going to end up together because he's just so So pitiful,
- 1:58:58he's not on the same playing level Aztec and they don't have
- 1:59:03all of this childhood history together, and I was stunned.
- 1:59:08The first time I watched Dream High, that she ends up with Kim
- 1:59:11Soo-hyun. It's not until the photocard
- 1:59:15comes up that like we know exactly how she feels.
- 1:59:17Like, I always knew she was confused.
- 1:59:19Hmm. But, and even loud and I were
- 1:59:21talking just before, like when we got on zum-zum to talk to you
- 1:59:24today, like I just found out like 30, Seconds ago that you
- 1:59:29know Tech was not the actual male lead like it didn't really
- 1:59:32register on the woman I'm like oh so I was like oh nice they
- 1:59:35ended up the show with like the second male lead and it's like
- 1:59:37oh no he was never the funnies lead he set up as the male bee.
- 1:59:41I still contend to this day that they really wanted the audience
- 1:59:45to sort of roof for Tech and 101st.
- 1:59:49Maybe not root for them but think that they were going to
- 1:59:53end up together. I was just trying to have a
- 1:59:55review, right? I was telling Kathy that this
- 1:59:59was the first series where I didn't go for the second male
- 2:00:05lead, which was Soo, Young's character.
- 2:00:07Like, I always just really like taken, even though he did a lot
- 2:00:11of terrible, terrible thought. Well, you were younger because
- 2:00:14Tech is a second. Oh, in a sense he is technically
- 2:00:20the second really because she doesn't end up with him.
- 2:00:23Yeah, she ends up the suit. Look at that then.
- 2:00:25And when the cast, I saw it, like, I realized on Google.
- 2:00:27When you look for the cast in order, it's Susie and scallion
- 2:00:32like that is the the male lead. So now you're just being
- 2:00:35consistent with your because that NADA is considered because
- 2:00:38she did gum for the second male lead, even though he's honestly
- 2:00:42like if you look at his characterization, yeah.
- 2:00:45It would, anyone would think he was gonna end up with her?
- 2:00:49But yeah. So I was like, stunned that she
- 2:00:51ended up with like this country. Kid, who's talking and dialect
- 2:00:56and is Going deaf and like has all of these like issues and
- 2:01:04confidence issues and things like that.
- 2:01:05Like Tech doesn't have like confidence issues at all.
- 2:01:09Like he's very much set as delicious.
- 2:01:15Yeah also have my back you should have ended up together
- 2:01:18for all that he protected her and say after honestly at this
- 2:01:21point I'm just thinking them not not that I wanted it but I'm
- 2:01:25just like, I mean homie was writing for her.
- 2:01:27Better than their miconia for Beyonce at this point.
- 2:01:31I'm just saying like it was kind of if they kept the show, going,
- 2:01:36that would have ended up like happening at some point.
- 2:01:38I don't know. You make a good case though, do
- 2:01:41you make it? So let's talk about the time,
- 2:01:45Jump that happens. So whatever they get like
- 2:01:48through and they sort of Debut, they have a baby version of
- 2:01:53going viral because they did this flash mob thing and they
- 2:01:56were doing an online PR so that they could sell this Dream High
- 2:02:00group. And then they have their
- 2:02:03official debut performance on TV.
- 2:02:05Finally, when some of those / P d--'s see the the Groundswell
- 2:02:09that's happened because the group dropped out which was
- 2:02:11giving BTS before, BTS by. Yes.
- 2:02:15Yes, the group a group drop-down that where we going to find
- 2:02:18another group to replace them in like Dream High crew comes
- 2:02:21through. So that was all fine and good.
- 2:02:26A little ahead of its time I guess because in 2011 I guess
- 2:02:29flash mobs weren't quite a thing.
- 2:02:31I'm like they were a few years later, they were, they were
- 2:02:34flash mobs, I don't remember flash mobs, until a few years
- 2:02:37later being like a thing. I don't know, I feel like I saw
- 2:02:41a lot of flash mob content and college, so and yeah, saying,
- 2:02:452007 to 2011, she know, same things.
- 2:02:48I do think that you may be in Korea, it wasn't maybe, I don't
- 2:02:54know. So, then we have a time Jump.
- 2:02:56I used the preschool or kindergarten teacher and Becky
- 2:03:01is now a teacher at Kirin Art School.
- 2:03:04She's taking the place of teacher, she who, and she does,
- 2:03:08like the same stunt with the Thumbtacks thing because she
- 2:03:11doesn't know originality. If I hit her in the face.
- 2:03:14Correct to make sense. I like this just tracks for her
- 2:03:17character because she's tried to plagiarize the song earlier in
- 2:03:20the show. And now she's like taking the
- 2:03:22same same approach to teaching as teachers she Tech is a famous
- 2:03:29artist. President Ma married the Noona
- 2:03:33character and had a kid with her and Kim Soo-hyun is artist K.
- 2:03:40He's he won a Grammy or whatever.
- 2:03:44I think I have issues with just like the seat.
- 2:03:47The final scene, which is Kim soohyun and Susie's character.
- 2:03:52She's trying to convince him to go to the states and sort of
- 2:03:57become a bigger star than if he had stayed in Korea.
- 2:04:02And she tells him a version of like the Boys Over Flowers thing
- 2:04:07which is why don't you go and like, improve on yourself and
- 2:04:11get, famous and become a great man.
- 2:04:13And then I'll consider being with you even though she clearly
- 2:04:18like loves him already and That's, that's it.
- 2:04:23Like, they have a repeat of the of the makes no sense bus scene
- 2:04:28where she's now running after the bus, they tried to have
- 2:04:32like, that full circle moment, but that it is Messy as hell
- 2:04:35with. It was like the flash box on the
- 2:04:38forwards and it was a little hard to understand.
- 2:04:41It was, yeah, yeah. I remember being fooled.
- 2:04:45I still don't understand where Susie's character ended like,
- 2:04:50yeah. What?
- 2:04:51She like a famous. Does she go back to opera
- 2:04:53singing? I was very confused.
- 2:04:56It's unclear. I think it's ambiguous and I
- 2:04:58don't know why they would make it so ambiguous.
- 2:05:01She was sick a celebrating her 100th performance concert.
- 2:05:04Yeah or 100th concert and then she sings the dang Walk to
- 2:05:09Remember Song again. Yeah.
- 2:05:12To honor of sue him because his character is like you know
- 2:05:15living his bus but also lonely. Yeah, it's like they didn't work
- 2:05:19out because they both focus on their careers.
- 2:05:23It's weird. It's frustrating because it
- 2:05:26shouldn't. We shouldn't be guessing at it,
- 2:05:28you know, and then I use character.
- 2:05:30Did I want to go pills look to the thing?
- 2:05:32Because she didn't want to be photographed because a now she
- 2:05:35had gained weight again. She gained back weight and he
- 2:05:37was like, all right fine, like I guess Netflix and chill.
- 2:05:40Truly truly, truly the only character that achieved her goal
- 2:05:44was Susie's little sister. Parkland, been in this Cameo as
- 2:05:55the little sister and she kisses check on the cheek against
- 2:06:00early. She say what?
- 2:06:01She's like, yes, she knew what she wanted.
- 2:06:03Had marked her territory and I mean presumably, it's been what
- 2:06:0887 years ago? I thought I was a six-year jump.
- 2:06:12Yeah. From the moment like the last
- 2:06:14moment that was that time, I don't know like something around
- 2:06:17here so I guess she's now a teenager ER pakkun bin and so
- 2:06:25problematic. It's so problematic at least 10
- 2:06:31years it's good, it's over and Lindsay Wilmer.
- 2:06:36Mandy will stray bullets in this episode and
- 2:06:59All right. So the ending was a miss and
- 2:07:03there that's it. Like, we're at the end of the
- 2:07:05show. We're done, thanks.
- 2:07:11Did you guys have anything else to add to this?
- 2:07:15Think? Oh Lord.
- 2:07:19I'm appreciative that we that I watched a really bad drama
- 2:07:23because up until now I had been like, oh my God.
- 2:07:25Maybe I just like everything and I don't have like a distinction
- 2:07:30or are like a temperature check thing but I do know.
- 2:07:33Now I know that I don't like certain things so thank you
- 2:07:37know. I wish that I could bestow like
- 2:07:43all of these years of like a Drama watching on other people
- 2:07:46because Sometimes the drama's nowadays are two.
- 2:07:50Good people can't like really parse out if anything was not so
- 2:07:57great and I started watching during this era of kdrama we're
- 2:08:02like Dream High was very popular and dream Heist, not a very good
- 2:08:07show, it is passable, but but is it like the best show ever?
- 2:08:15No is Camp. Rock.
- 2:08:17Like the best movie ever and there was a time where we could
- 2:08:21have like stomach to because of our age and right.
- 2:08:24That's what I'm saying. This feels like a step up, Save
- 2:08:28the Last Dance, High School, Musical Camp Rock type of movie.
- 2:08:32I've said, type of show what this show made me conclude, was
- 2:08:36that I probably wouldn't have the best time watching kdramas
- 2:08:40from before 2015. Not to generalize.
- 2:08:43I'm sure there's great ones that I could probably go back to,
- 2:08:46there are great ones. Yeah, it really misses an
- 2:08:49experiment right to also going back further than 2015 because
- 2:08:54so many people say they can't watch something pre 2015.
- 2:08:58I'm like you could just okay, you can do it, okay?
- 2:09:01If there's some really great dramas out there and there's
- 2:09:04some iconic, dramas like Dream High that, don't hold up.
- 2:09:08So and iconic doesn't necessarily mean good, right?
- 2:09:12Like, you know cultural reset for the time being or whatever?
- 2:09:16Yeah. Underneath.
- 2:09:17Hmm. So I think that's it.
- 2:09:20I want to thank you guys for coming on the show for watching.
- 2:09:23Dream, I in its entirety and just going on this journey with
- 2:09:27me. I think it was very eye-opening
- 2:09:31to Return to Dream High for both me and Lauda.
- 2:09:34And it was probably I don't want to say was a time-waster for
- 2:09:38you, Kathy, but I think it was educational at the very least,
- 2:09:44especially because you guys are so immersed in Kpop like, This
- 2:09:47is part of Kpop history to. Yeah no I don't regret it.
- 2:09:52I don't like as much as I have roasted it I'm enjoying roasting
- 2:09:56it and I again I always like to be part of the conversation like
- 2:10:00when Game of Thrones was really big like season 5.
- 2:10:03I wasn't watching Game of Thrones and I just watched like
- 2:10:06the first episode of season six just to understand what you're
- 2:10:08talking about. So I have this like general fomo
- 2:10:11of wanting to know and wanting to have context.
- 2:10:15So now I have the context to Dream High so I Don't consider
- 2:10:18it a time waste at all at awesome.
- 2:10:20Yeah, awesome. Well, if you're listening
- 2:10:22online, you can find my girls Kathy and Lauda on all of the
- 2:10:26socials at em, a 2K podcast, and listen to their pot.
- 2:10:31If you loved Kpop or in any way, shape, or form, love kpop,
- 2:10:36listen to their show. It's amazing.
- 2:10:39They're super fun to listen to, and we got more concerts to see
- 2:10:45together. As a matter of fact, like we're
- 2:10:46still going, Owen. Yeah, not next week but the week
- 2:10:49after? Yeah.
- 2:10:50Like a couple of weeks. Yeah.
- 2:10:52For more Kpop, or cake. R&B goodness.
