- 0:07Speaker 1: What a treat, fellas. What an absolute treat. Two comedy
- 0:11Speaker 1: legends in the studio with us. The one and only
- 0:15Speaker 1: Johnny Brough and Jackie Van Beek. G'day, team.
- 0:18Speaker 2: How's life?
- 0:18Speaker 3: It's two. G'day, Jase.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Yeah, two legends, man. Two legends.
- 0:23Speaker 3: Two and only John Brough, Jackie Van Beek.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Yes. Yes. How are you?
- 0:28Speaker 1: Are you good?
- 0:29Speaker 4: Good, thank you. Hang on, don't you know these guys?
- 0:32Speaker 4: Why is the chemistry so off? What have you done?
- 0:35Speaker 1: Nothing at all.
- 0:35Speaker 3: Lots of heavy stuff in the past.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right.
- 0:38Speaker 3: A lot of bridges burnt.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Going to dredge it all up.
- 0:40Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah.
- 0:41Speaker 1: We're not going to get into all that.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Do you know what's interesting is four out of the
- 0:44Speaker 2: five people in this room have been in what we
- 0:46Speaker 2: do in the shadows.
- 0:47Speaker 4: Hands up.
- 0:49Speaker 1: That's true, yes.
- 0:50Speaker 4: Okay, oh, Keezy's just a radio guy, not an actor.
- 0:55Speaker 3: Who's been in Educators?
- 0:57Speaker 4: Who was supposed to.
- 0:58Speaker 6: Be an educator?
- 0:59Speaker 1: Three out of five. Well, I was asked to be
- 1:01Speaker 1: an educator.
- 1:01Speaker 3: You'd be fabulous.
- 1:02Speaker 1: But it was literally, I was shopping with my daughter
- 1:05Speaker 1: and it was like, can you come in now? And
- 1:06Speaker 1: I was like, well.
- 1:07Speaker 4: That's how we cast.
- 1:09Speaker 1: I can't come in now because I'm with my daughter shopping.
- 1:11Speaker 1: So I missed out on my opportunity.
- 1:13Speaker 7: What part did we want you for?
- 1:14Speaker 4: A pastor or something?
- 1:15Speaker 1: Just background. Do I give those sort of vibes? A
- 1:17Speaker 1: little bit, yeah. Priest-y vibes?
- 1:19Speaker 4: Maris Brother.
- 1:20Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Maris Brother?
- 1:22Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Oh, man.
- 1:24Speaker 5: I've always thought you and I would be great Maris
- 1:26Speaker 5: Brothers comedy duet.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Funnily enough, Johnny, I've always felt like I'd be a
- 1:29Speaker 1: very good priest.
- 1:30Speaker 4: Okay, two words, season five.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Season five, okay.
- 1:34Speaker 7: Your time to shine, James.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Sounds good. Now, we've got you legends in here because
- 1:38Speaker 1: we want to talk about your new film, Mum, I'm
- 1:41Speaker 1: Alien Pregnant, which is going to be released tomorrow night,
- 1:44Speaker 1: I believe. Yes.
- 1:45Speaker 3: Can I just correct you on that? It's Help, Mum,
- 1:47Speaker 3: I'm Alien Pregnant.
- 1:48Speaker 1: No, it's not. No, it's not.
- 1:50Speaker 6: Johnny.
- 1:50Speaker 3: Has it changed?
- 1:51Speaker 4: No, it's always just been Mum.
- 1:53Speaker 1: I told you.
- 1:55Speaker 4: I've got the information.
- 1:57Speaker 3: No, you don't.
- 1:58Speaker 4: There's nothing. I've got the press release here.
- 2:00Speaker 7: Yes, read it, please.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Can you give us the facts, please, Keezy?
- 2:03Speaker 4: Mum, I'm alien, pregnant, a new sci-fi comedy from Kiwi writing,
- 2:07Speaker 4: directing duo Thunder Lips.
- 2:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:10Speaker 4: Sean Wallace and Jordan Mark-Windsor.
- 2:11Speaker 7: Correct.
- 2:12Speaker 3: Okay, well, I'll be going into litigation.
- 2:14Speaker 5: Because I thought it was Help My Mammalian Pregnant that
- 2:17Speaker 5: changed it after I signed the contract.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Well, I heard you talking to Jackie before you came in,
- 2:21Speaker 1: and maybe she should deal with the admin, because she
- 2:24Speaker 1: said she's got all the details.
- 2:25Speaker 7: Well, Johnny said, to be honest, Johnny said, have you
- 2:27Speaker 7: got all the details?
- 2:28Speaker 4: I said no.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Not really. Well, talk to us about the film, because
- 2:32Speaker 1: Mogi and I were just watching a little clip of
- 2:34Speaker 1: it just before. It looks very confronting. Ah, okay. But brilliant.
- 2:38Speaker 7: Let's break that down. Let's drill into that.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Yes.
- 2:40Speaker 4: Let's drill into that.
- 2:41Speaker 7: Okay, I'm going to start with a long anecdote, okay?
- 2:45Speaker 1: Okay.
- 2:46Speaker 6: No, no, no.
- 2:47Speaker 4: I'm going to make it short.
- 2:48Speaker 7: Confronting.
- 2:48Speaker 6: No, no, no.
- 2:49Speaker 7: I don't want people to think like that. It is a,
- 2:52Speaker 7: I would say, hilarious comedy, first and foremost.
- 2:54Speaker 3: Yes.
- 2:55Speaker 7: Yes, it has a little bit of alien penis stuff
- 2:57Speaker 7: in it. Yes, it's a little bit sci-fi. Don't be
- 2:59Speaker 7: put off, though.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Oh, I wasn't.
- 3:01Speaker 2: No, no, no.
- 3:02Speaker 7: I know you love your confronting stuff. But, okay, long anecdote.
- 3:06Speaker 7: My parents, mid-70s, they went to this film.
- 3:10Speaker 4: Beforehand, I called them.
- 3:11Speaker 7: I said, hey, thanks for going to the film. They said, yeah,
- 3:14Speaker 7: it doesn't really look like our thing, sci-fi and stuff,
- 3:16Speaker 7: but we'll go because you're in it, Jackie. I called
- 3:17Speaker 7: them afterwards.
- 3:18Speaker 1: They loved it. Yes.
- 3:20Speaker 7: They loved it because they found it really funny, a
- 3:23Speaker 7: great kind of family thing. Then my daughter, 19 years old.
- 3:27Speaker 7: went with her boyfriend in Wellington at the embassy.
- 3:28Speaker 1: They loved it.
- 3:29Speaker 7: So I'm pitching this as not confronting. I'm pitching this
- 3:33Speaker 7: as a warm, hilarious, kind of sci-fi, but kind of
- 3:38Speaker 7: not really, family comedy.
- 3:41Speaker 2: That's what I'm hearing. From grandkids to grandparents across the
- 3:45Speaker 2: divide of ages, everybody loves Mum, I'm Alien Pregnant. And
- 3:48Speaker 2: we were just, I watched the first half an hour.
- 3:50Speaker 2: I sort of forgot you were coming in. I was
- 3:51Speaker 2: meant to watch it before you came. So I got
- 3:54Speaker 2: through half an hour of it. It's a hell of
- 3:57Speaker 2: a cold open, 20 minutes. And what you're dealing with
- 4:00Speaker 2: in different scenes is a young lady who lives with
- 4:03Speaker 2: her mother, played by Yvette Parsons. They hate each other.
- 4:07Speaker 2: And then there's you, Jackie, and you've got a son
- 4:10Speaker 2: who may or may not be the result. No, they're
- 4:12Speaker 2: very against each other. They're combative. It's a combative relationship.
- 4:16Speaker 7: I would say they are combative.
- 4:18Speaker 4: At the start.
- 4:19Speaker 2: And then, Jackie, you've had a son who may or
- 4:21Speaker 2: may not be as a result of a dalliance, an
- 4:24Speaker 2: affair that you have had with an alien.
- 4:27Speaker 7: I would say, not that I did not get a
- 4:29Speaker 7: backstory printed out, but I would say I was definitely
- 4:32Speaker 7: abducted by aliens. And I would definitely say.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Prequel.
- 4:37Speaker 7: I'm thinking prequel.
- 4:38Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 4:38Speaker 1: So you know what I mean?
- 4:39Speaker 7: Because I want to see that movie.
- 4:41Speaker 6: Yes.
- 4:41Speaker 2: And they're very horny, both of these youngsters.
- 4:43Speaker 3: Yes.
- 4:44Speaker 2: And by the time you get to the sex scene,
- 4:46Speaker 2: and the sex scene is explicit, hilarious, and magnificent. It's
- 4:51Speaker 2: kind of in the style of your old school splattery
- 4:54Speaker 2: horror things. I'm assuming the obvious comparisons have been made
- 4:58Speaker 2: to Peter Jackson's Bad Taste, Meet the Feebles, that sort
- 5:01Speaker 2: of thing.
- 5:01Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 5:01Speaker 3: We're not dealing with a horror film.
- 5:03Speaker 5: No.
- 5:03Speaker 3: It's got a bit of splatter and a bit of
- 5:04Speaker 3: sexy goo.
- 5:05Speaker 4: Blue goo.
- 5:06Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Sexy goo.
- 5:07Speaker 4: Sexy goo.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Sexy goo is a good word. Well, that is the
- 5:09Speaker 1: part I saw was the sexy goo.
- 5:11Speaker 7: It's the sexy goo.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Yes.
- 5:13Speaker 7: I mean, it is a sex scene and it is explicit,
- 5:15Speaker 7: but they don't touch each other.
- 5:16Speaker 1: No, they don't.
- 5:17Speaker 7: So it's not one of those, I don't want people
- 5:19Speaker 7: sitting in their cars listening to this thinking, oh, my gosh, oh,
- 5:22Speaker 7: my gosh. You know, it's naturalism and stuff. It's goofy
- 5:24Speaker 7: as hell.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah. And also, if you are into sex scenes.
- 5:29Speaker 2: Absolutely still go. Even though Jackie's talking it down, it's
- 5:32Speaker 2: still worth going. That's for the admission price alone. Oh, yeah.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Unbelievable.
- 5:35Speaker 4: Because you don't want people sitting in their cars that
- 5:37Speaker 4: love sex scenes being like.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Oh, it sounds like a sex scene.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Oh, no, it's a fantastic sex scene.
- 5:42Speaker 3: It's magnificent.
- 5:42Speaker 1: It's one of the greats.
- 5:43Speaker 4: One of the greats.
- 5:44Speaker 5: It's actually about, the whole film's about going to the
- 5:48Speaker 5: hospital to get some answers and trying to get people
- 5:51Speaker 5: to listen to you and the system not listening.
- 5:54Speaker 3: They don't listen to the....
- 5:57Speaker 2: The patience.
- 5:58Speaker 7: Yes.
- 5:58Speaker 1: The patience, yeah.
- 5:59Speaker 7: That is true, especially your character, Johnny.
- 6:01Speaker 5: Yes, I play the, you know, classic sort of doctor
- 6:05Speaker 5: who doesn't listen and humours her.
- 6:08Speaker 3: Yeah, deeply annoying.
- 6:09Speaker 2: Yes.
- 6:09Speaker 7: I'm good at that.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Yeah, but it is.
- 6:13Speaker 7: It is about, you know, under all of the kind
- 6:15Speaker 7: of the crazy comedy and the sexy goo, it is
- 6:19Speaker 7: about a woman, I think. It's about a woman who's
- 6:21Speaker 7: trying to, you know, have agency over her own, you know, pregnancy.
- 6:25Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Yeah. There we go.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:28Speaker 7: The Hauraki Big Show, weekdays from 4 on Radio Hauraki.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Oh, g'day, Matt. Oh, hi, mate. Yeah.
- 6:36Speaker 6: Look, if you want the chance to win all our
- 6:38Speaker 6: on-air competitions and stuff and get amongst the live conversation,
- 6:44Speaker 6: tune in to the Hauraki Big Show, four to seven
- 6:47Speaker 6: weekdays on Radio Hauraki and iHeartRadio.
- 6:52Speaker 4: The Hauraki Big Show podcast.
- 6:55Speaker 1: We've got the stars of the movie, Mum, I'm Alien, Pregnant,
- 6:58Speaker 1: in the studio with us, Jackie Van Beek and Johnny Buffett.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Some of the stars, can I put.
- 7:04Speaker 2: It that way?
- 7:05Speaker 5: Jackie Van Beek, definitely a star. Yvette Parsons, the wonderful genius,
- 7:09Speaker 5: comic genius.
- 7:10Speaker 3: She's brilliant. She's a star.
- 7:11Speaker 4: Hannah Lynch, superstar.
- 7:13Speaker 1: Yeah, she's incredible. So, Tim, when did you guys actually,
- 7:16Speaker 1: when was this actually filmed? Because I understand it's being
- 7:18Speaker 1: released tomorrow night.
- 7:20Speaker 7: It is in cinemas tomorrow.
- 7:22Speaker 5: Yes.
- 7:22Speaker 1: That is right.
- 7:23Speaker 7: When it was filmed, I would say recent past. I'm
- 7:26Speaker 7: not good with timelines, Johnny.
- 7:27Speaker 6: You've got a gas hammer.
- 7:28Speaker 7: Is it a year ago? A year and a half?
- 7:29Speaker 7: We were in Sundance in January and it was finished
- 7:31Speaker 7: by then because I saw it on screen.
- 7:33Speaker 5: Yes.
- 7:33Speaker 7: That was a blast. What are you going to say?
- 7:35Speaker 7: Should we say 18 months ago? We don't know.
- 7:37Speaker 3: It takes a while to get it to air, doesn't it?
- 7:40Speaker 4: What's the difference?
- 7:41Speaker 1: Yeah, it doesn't really matter, does it?
- 7:42Speaker 3: It takes a long time to make a film.
- 7:44Speaker 1: And when you watched it, how are you, Jackie, for
- 7:47Speaker 1: watching yourself on the screen? Absolutely love it. You love it?
- 7:51Speaker 7: I love, I just love watching myself thinking, what would
- 7:54Speaker 7: I do differently?
- 7:55Speaker 4: Especially the first time through.
- 7:56Speaker 2: No, first time through.
- 7:57Speaker 4: Oh, my God. There's wonderful mystery.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Wow, wow, wow, wow. I'm yelling out from the audience.
- 8:02Speaker 6: Wow.
- 8:03Speaker 3: No, to be honest, look, I don't mind it.
- 8:10Speaker 7: I'm so used to it now because I direct so
- 8:13Speaker 7: much as well, and I write and direct my own stuff,
- 8:15Speaker 7: and I'm in the edit suite looking at myself all day.
- 8:17Speaker 1: All the time, yes.
- 8:18Speaker 7: I mean, it's a very small, insular life. Yeah.
- 8:21Speaker 1: Well, you kind of.
- 8:22Speaker 2: Do, though.
- 8:23Speaker 1: You kind of get over yourself after a while. You
- 8:25Speaker 1: know what I mean? I remember when I first started
- 8:27Speaker 1: filming stuff, I was like, oh, my God, that's horrendously bad.
- 8:30Speaker 1: And then it was like, oh, it's fine. It'll do.
- 8:33Speaker 1: How do you find looking at yourself, Johnny?
- 8:36Speaker 3: I hate it.
- 8:37Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 8:37Speaker 3: Yeah, it's like.
- 8:38Speaker 5: It's like I think I'm 26 and I look at.
- 8:41Speaker 3: The screen and go, oh, no.
- 8:43Speaker 1: Is that what I looked like?
- 8:44Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 8:45Speaker 3: I thought they put makeup on me. Why didn't they
- 8:46Speaker 3: put makeup on me? We did.
- 8:48Speaker 2: This is as good as it gets.
- 8:50Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 8:52Speaker 3: Give yourself a year. Make something. Give it a year.
- 8:55Speaker 3: Look at it again and you see all the nice
- 8:57Speaker 3: things that you did.
- 8:58Speaker 2: Yes.
- 8:58Speaker 4: Jase, do you ever watch Broken Wood back and think, shit, yeah,
- 9:01Speaker 4: nailed that?
- 9:05Speaker 5: Um.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Yeah, sometimes I do, Keith. Do you?
- 9:07Speaker 4: Yeah, sure you do.
- 9:09Speaker 1: Sometimes I do.
- 9:10Speaker 4: Jackie Van Beek and Johnny Brough, you guys are in
- 9:13Speaker 4: one of my favourite sitcoms, Educators, made right here in
- 9:16Speaker 4: New Zealand. You've made four seasons of it. Is there
- 9:18Speaker 4: a chance of another season? There is a chance.
- 9:21Speaker 5: Oh, really?
- 9:21Speaker 4: There is a chance.
- 9:22Speaker 1: Because you heard the Keezy story.
- 9:24Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 9:26Speaker 1: Desperately. He thought he was on it.
- 9:28Speaker 4: And then it didn't happen.
- 9:29Speaker 2: We had it lined up that you two, I think,
- 9:30Speaker 2: were going to be dog handlers.
- 9:31Speaker 1: Dog handlers.
- 9:33Speaker 2: If I remember. And then, as is often the case
- 9:35Speaker 2: with educators.
- 9:36Speaker 4: There was a late change to the schedule.
- 9:38Speaker 3: Which ruled them out.
- 9:40Speaker 2: Yes.
- 9:41Speaker 4: Because I think what happened was it was the night
- 9:43Speaker 4: before I was supposed– it was two nights before I
- 9:46Speaker 4: was supposed to shoot, and then they text me that
- 9:48Speaker 4: night saying, hey, you ready for tomorrow? 6 a.m. And
- 9:50Speaker 4: I couldn't come in a day earlier. And so I
- 9:53Speaker 4: missed out, which I was gutted about.
- 9:55Speaker 7: Well, you know, as I've said, season five. You know,
- 9:58Speaker 7: there's nothing confirmed, but there's a lot of people asking
- 10:01Speaker 7: me down at the local Woolworths.
- 10:03Speaker 2: Yes.
- 10:04Speaker 7: I do get asked about the show a lot. Yeah.
- 10:06Speaker 4: So there's an appetite for it.
- 10:08Speaker 5: I get all my ideas standing in line at a
- 10:09Speaker 5: cafe and someone will tap me on the shoulder and go,
- 10:12Speaker 5: love educators.
- 10:13Speaker 3: Got any ideas? And they tell me stuff.
- 10:16Speaker 4: We rip off a lot of people's stories.
- 10:18Speaker 1: Just in regards to that show, there's a lot of
- 10:21Speaker 1: improvisation going on, isn't there, really?
- 10:23Speaker 3: The whole thing is improvised.
- 10:26Speaker 7: So we all, as actors, we all, as the core cast,
- 10:29Speaker 7: we all pitch our own storylines for our own characters
- 10:31Speaker 7: to Jesse.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Great.
- 10:33Speaker 7: And then Jesse kind of filters through them, throws away
- 10:35Speaker 7: the ones that aren't going to work so well, and then, yeah,
- 10:38Speaker 7: and then we just turn up on the day and
- 10:39Speaker 7: we improvise our way through the scenes. Jesse kind of.
- 10:42Speaker 1: Maps it all out.
- 10:43Speaker 7: He spends like a month mapping it all out.
- 10:44Speaker 4: Is that a nightmare to cut? Afterwards?
- 10:47Speaker 7: It's not a nightmare, but it's a long edit.
- 10:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:50Speaker 7: It's a long, long edit.
- 10:50Speaker 4: Because every take would be different, wouldn't it? There's a
- 10:53Speaker 4: lot of.
- 10:54Speaker 3: Cameras in there.
- 10:54Speaker 7: We definitely, yeah, there's a lot of cameras, but we
- 10:56Speaker 7: definitely hone in on a scene. Like, it'll start super loose.
- 11:00Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 11:00Speaker 7: And, you know, and off and a bit shit.
- 11:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:03Speaker 7: And then Jesse will kind of go, oh, don't worry
- 11:05Speaker 7: about saying all that other stuff, but just start from
- 11:07Speaker 7: this bit, because that bit's quite interesting, and talk more about, like,
- 11:10Speaker 7: talk more about the dog taking that piss behind the
- 11:12Speaker 7: park bench. And so then we'll, like, do that. And
- 11:15Speaker 7: then once we've got something fun, then we'll just cover
- 11:17Speaker 7: off all the different angles.
- 11:18Speaker 3: Yeah, right, okay.
- 11:19Speaker 1: Because sometimes it takes a little while to find what
- 11:21Speaker 1: it is. You know what I mean? Was there any,
- 11:23Speaker 1: in terms of this movie, was there much improvisation for that?
- 11:27Speaker 1: Were you able to improvise?
- 11:30Speaker 3: We had a bit of rehearsal before we shot.
- 11:32Speaker 5: Did you? And you get a few obvious lines kind
- 11:35Speaker 5: of jump to mind and you use them and they.
- 11:36Speaker 1: Sort of stick.
- 11:38Speaker 7: Yeah, we got to have a rehearsal process, which was
- 11:40Speaker 7: really fun, just to get everything up on its feet.
- 11:42Speaker 4: And.
- 11:43Speaker 7: But there wasn't a huge amount of improv. Like, they
- 11:46Speaker 7: had a really solid script.
- 11:47Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 11:48Speaker 7: And we said the lines, didn't we, Johnny?
- 11:51Speaker 5: Yeah, like, well, educators, sometimes there's four cameras in the room.
- 11:55Speaker 5: And with this, you've really got to line it up
- 11:58Speaker 5: and light it. And it's, you know, getting everyone in
- 12:01Speaker 5: the same spot and lit and ready to roll is
- 12:03Speaker 5: a lot. So you can't muck about, you know.
- 12:06Speaker 1: Yes.
- 12:07Speaker 4: Yeah, Jase. Yeah.
- 12:08Speaker 7: Yeah, Jase.
- 12:09Speaker 1: Yeah, sorry, team.
- 12:09Speaker 2: Shocking from you, Jase.
- 12:11Speaker 1: I apologise, everyone. Hey, well, go and see it. Mum,
- 12:16Speaker 1: I'm alien pregnant.
- 12:17Speaker 4: No, it's help, Mum. No, it's not.
- 12:18Speaker 1: No, it's Mum. It's hello, Mum.
