- 1:19Well, it was funny yesterday I was talking about Jack Moyles and we're actually
- 1:26entering his era on the lineup in our examination of recently discovered episode for in
- 1:32the Era, where after Bully Mayer died in late nineteen fifty one, he
- 1:38came to the line up playing the role of Sergeant Carter. The original air
- 1:42date for this program was April twenty ninth of nineteen fifty two, and the
- 1:48title is The Big Boys British Backbending Case ladies and gentlemen. We take you
- 1:55now by transcription, behind the scenes of a police headquarters in a great American
- 1:59city, or under the cold blaring lights will pass before us, the innocent,
- 2:04the vagrant, the thief, the murderer. This is the lineup,
- 2:09Ah, mister ketchum. Yeah, I'm mister Lieutenant Catherine, glad to meet
- 2:44you. Any trouble finding a place? Oh no? The book TA wants
- 2:47to being drunk a year ago last Christmas. It was I know the place
- 2:51all right. He changed it all to much disinfected, smell it everywhere.
- 2:58I think you got him, huh, I don't know for sure. Is
- 3:00the license number I gave you? I was right, wasn't I'll scene,
- 3:04I'm smart? Have you you let people out there the side of the wire
- 3:08in the audience room? May I have your attention? Please? Thank you.
- 3:14My name is Carger, Sergeant Pete Carger. I'll explain the lineup to
- 3:16you. Each of the suspects you will see will be numbered. I'll call
- 3:20off a number their name in charge. You have any questions or identifications,
- 3:23please remember the number of signed with the prisoners. I call his name the
- 3:27end of each line when I ask for questions or identifications. Call out the
- 3:30number if you're sure, are not too sure? The suspect had him mail
- 3:35questions, I asked. These suspects are reality to get a natural tone of
- 3:37voice, but not pay too much attention to their answers, as they often
- 3:40lie. All right, bring on the line all the way to the end
- 3:45of the stage. Boy, that's it. I'll turn and face the front,
- 3:50eye straight ahead. Talk up in a good loud voice so the people
- 3:53in the back of this room can hear you. Number one, Gerald vanneck
- 3:57assaw up to the Senate? Where do you live? Gerald thirty seven fifty
- 4:01six Mira poses Street wa'ts your profession? I drive a truck. I'm a
- 4:05truck. I don't look at me. You look out there? Any weapons
- 4:09on you when you were picked up? No? You own a car?
- 4:12Yeah? What make coupe? Saedan? What the forty seven? Pick a
- 4:15black sedan? Matter with your ear? He got cut? How in a
- 4:20fight? Somebody clouded me with an ash tree taking good carrier? Gerald?
- 4:25Oh, shoe shoe? I slid on down. Number two Robert pray Burglary,
- 4:31Robert pray Oh. I'm saying, come on, I saw it up
- 4:35where do you live Robert Ashton Avenue? It's name fifteen? I think haven't
- 4:41you lived there very long? No? I just slept there the one night.
- 4:44It's a hotel sort of. Where'd you come from? Topeka, Kansas?
- 4:47What kind of work do you do? Painted? And to do a
- 4:50carving? Any weapons? Boy that's gone? Live out? What's the caliber?
- 4:55And make come on Robert? Well, you make me kind of nervous.
- 4:58I'm just trying to thirty eight. Yeah, Smith and Wesson. I
- 5:04was a chrome or blue steel? Can you remember that? Blue steel?
- 5:09Thank you? New Wilkins are gone. Move number three, Edward Franklin open
- 5:15charge. Give us your address Edward thirteen West eighteenth Avenue. Your business construction
- 5:21work? I do steel work mostly. How long you've been in town?
- 5:25That's the week? Ten days. Maybe you own a car? Yeah,
- 5:29forty six buick Cedar that it's the rule, but it's back in Pittsburgh.
- 5:32I haven't got it here. Any weapons on you when you were picked up?
- 5:38What's your weight? To thirty eight? Get back against the wall.
- 5:42I'm six three and a half. Just against the wall. Stage Yeah,
- 5:49sure, taking them Sergeant Cargar, Yes, sir number three. All for
- 5:55interrogation. Yeah, and tell us what you were doing in at the quarry
- 6:08last night? What was I doing? You know what I was doing out
- 6:11there? Tell us again. I rented a car to take a look at
- 6:15this town. I thought I might like to work around here, So I
- 6:18just drove around yesterday, that's all. I happened to turn the car around
- 6:21when I got out by the quarry. That was about eight o'clock, wasn't
- 6:26Oh it was almost ten you know that. Where'd you drive it? Oh?
- 6:30Just around all over? And do you remember any of the other streets
- 6:33you were on? No, not my name one of them. A lot
- 6:36of driving theaters along the way. You were rented the car at eighty four
- 6:42yesterday, is that right? Yeah, about three in the afternoon. Yeah.
- 6:46Why did you rent a cadillancan? Huh? You could have rented a
- 6:48Ford for ten dollars a day. Cadi like cost fifteen. Why do you
- 6:53mean why fifteen dollars a day to look around a new city when you could
- 6:57do it for ten. Seems funny that So I just wanted the Caddie,
- 7:00that's all. Nothing funny about that. You had the Cadillac last night and
- 7:03the night before where'd you go the night before? Nowhere? I stayed that
- 7:08cad was sitting out there, costing you fifteen bucks. Yeah, I can
- 7:12afford it. You didn't go anywhere that night. No, but you went
- 7:15out last night out looking around? Yeah? What time did you leave your
- 7:18apartment? Late in the afternoon? Four or five? Why didn't you look
- 7:21around in the daytime? Because I wanted to look around at night? After
- 7:28you finished driving around? Did you go right home? Yeah, you didn't
- 7:32stop in anywhere. No, how about a drink? Do you have a
- 7:35drink somewhere along the line? No? I just said no. You're driving
- 7:39around town for five hours. Did you meet anybody? Talk to anybody in
- 7:43that time? No? Now, let me see. You've told us that
- 7:46you came in town from Pittsburgh ten days ago. You took a fairly expensive
- 7:51apartment, and later on you rented a pretty nice car. Right. What
- 7:56are you doing here in looking? Just looking? I might want to live
- 8:01here. You don't know anyone here? No, nearly everybody has some kind
- 8:05of reason for pulling up stakes and starting in another plane. Well I didn't.
- 8:09I just grabbed a plane in Pittsburgh and came here. Left my car
- 8:13and all my things there. If I decided to stay, I'll send for
- 8:16them. Why'd you leave Pittsburgh? I got fed up? You got fired,
- 8:22didn't you? Huh? You work for the General Mayor Construction company there,
- 8:26didn't you? Yeah? For five years and they fired you two weeks
- 8:31ago. Isn't that the story? That's not the story at all. I
- 8:35quit. Look in the witness saw you drive up to the quarry edge last
- 8:39night and take a body out of your car. He says you threw it
- 8:41on the quarry and then drove away. You're identified as the driver of the
- 8:45car. Now we want to get all the thanks. We can clear this
- 8:48up one way or another. It's going to help you and it's going to
- 8:50help us. What happened in Pittsburgh? Wow, this guy was working for
- 8:58me. I was foreman, you know. Yeah, had a lot of
- 9:00lip, big man, not as big as me, but be full of
- 9:03talk, real good with the ladies. He got on my nerves one day
- 9:07and I let him have it. You mean you hit him? Yeah,
- 9:09five teeth right across the front. Cost me six hundred dollars for dental work.
- 9:15The man didn't press charges. He knew better your life living in Pittsburgh
- 9:22now in I haven't got all my ex Yeah, I guess so. I
- 9:24didn't see her much after we broke up. She charged you with AsSalt once,
- 9:28Is that right? I didn't hit her, just slapped her. We
- 9:31never got along. Ed you give me the idea why our witness would tell
- 9:35us what he did. White say, he saw your dumble man's body in
- 9:37the quarry. Whyite take your license number and tell the police. No,
- 9:41he must be crazy seeing things. But you were alone in the car all
- 9:45that time. You were driving around all alone, all alone for six hours
- 9:48or better? That's right? Okayn? All through by the time being all
- 9:56right? Coome ony, yeah h yeah. Wine phoned in from the quarry
- 10:09anything, yeah, yeah. They found the body of a man, a
- 10:33man, all right? What do you say down? Use the cream belonged
- 10:35to the same company from the grambling hooks. After they found the body,
- 10:39the track slipped off, not stuck. Trying to figure it out. Looks
- 10:43like a mask. They don't get it out. He's over here on these
- 10:46things on him. Driver's license says his name is Alpha pe Hanson one one
- 10:52three two Race Street from the ring and the watch dollar fifty percent figures hang
- 10:58on him three. Yeah, alright, don take it back. Ah,
- 11:03pretty young. My sense was issued three years ago, and he says he
- 11:07was twenty at the time. How long do you think he's been on the
- 11:09water. I can't tell you right now, roughly thirty forty hours. The
- 11:15rock was tied on just like that. Pretty good job of wearing. Yeah,
- 11:18look up here. I figured he came over the side, no brunes
- 11:22on his body and cut some lacerations. You can see for yourself. Tell
- 11:26him I went to get him downtown. Any idea why he's drowning? All
- 11:31right? He was still alive when he went in. Oh, yeah,
- 11:35somebody broke us back before that. Hello. Hello, does Alfred Paul Hanson
- 11:56live here? Yes, yes he does. I'm a sister, missus Kelly.
- 12:00Police officers, missus Kelly. We'd like to tell please, Oh lord,
- 12:03is Alan trouble. My name is Guthrie. This is Sergeant Cargo.
- 12:07May we come in please? How do you do? Well? Yes,
- 12:11but I don't is your husband? And missus Kelly? No, he's in
- 12:16Buffalo. He travels. I don't expect him back until Wednesday. I see.
- 12:18We'd like to check on a couple of things with you. Missus Kelly.
- 12:24When'd you see your brother last last night at dinner? And did he
- 12:28leave the house after dinner? Yes? Please? What was he wearing a
- 12:33sweet suit? I think has al done something? Did you report him missing?
- 12:39No? No, but he's liable not to come home for two or
- 12:43three nights in a row. He stays with friends. That isn't it isn't.
- 12:48It may not be him, but we'd like to have you come downtown
- 12:52with us and look at a body with Oh no, all right, officer's
- 13:00acle. I know how hard it was for you to come down here and
- 13:16do this, Miss Kelly. I understand it had to be done. I
- 13:18know what you had your job to do. Thank you, miss Kelly.
- 13:22Now you least saw your brother at dinner time? Yesterday? Yes? Now?
- 13:28What time? Was there? About? Six? I kiss he went
- 13:31out right after dinner? Did he walk or take the car? He walked?
- 13:37Can you remember if he had a phone call and made a day to
- 13:39meet someer? No? I did where he went? Did he said he
- 13:43was going to a movie or to a friend's house? Oh? He just
- 13:46sick. Bye. Whatever you can tell us is going to help us.
- 13:54Missus Kelly. I suppose you know some of his friends. M kah.
- 14:01He brought girls over to the house now and then boys are going to school
- 14:03with her service. Yes, we'd like as many names as you can give
- 14:09us. Well, I had so many friends. Let's see. I guess
- 14:15one of his best friends is the boy named but Chisholm. You know,
- 14:20he lives with his family and Edward side. They have a bigger home there.
- 14:24And there's another boy born in Copeland. He lives on the other side
- 14:28too. With Yes, I don't know any of the addresses. Suppose they're
- 14:35in the phone book. Now? Who else? Oh? Jack? Did
- 14:43us he lives quite near us on Malfayette Street. D I D d I,
- 14:48yes, yes, it's all I can remember. If your contact you
- 14:56you mentioned a girl, oh when he had him on Lucia Lucy O'milcolm,
- 15:03sweet kid? Any other girls? And Nancy for that? But Jessuslissa,
- 15:11did your brother ever work or live in Pittsburghsburgh, Pennsylvania? No? Did
- 15:16you ever mentioned a man named ed Franklin? No? I don't think so.
- 15:24He might have it last night at dinner. Did I don't have a
- 15:26drink? Maybe the medical examiner tells us he had a drink or too somewhere
- 15:31last night. We thought maybe he had it at home. No, well,
- 15:35do you know some cocktail lounge where he'd go to have a couple of
- 15:37quiet drinks? You'll have to ask somebody else. I couldn't see sure,
- 15:45Okay, I should right inside it, missus Kelly. Have you ever seen
- 15:58this man before him? No? I don't think I have. He drives
- 16:04a Cadillac convert of him. Do you ever come by the house? No,
- 16:08I'm quite sure. Okay, all right, my mind mind, Well,
- 16:17thank you, miss Kelly. Sergeant cog I'll take you home. Hi.
- 16:33Pete around down the hall talking to some people who rounded up this morning.
- 16:36Have some kids friends? Yeah, with checking them through R and I
- 16:38right now, Cline and Crockett covering the bid joints and taverns in the neighborhood.
- 16:42Marg sent over the picture. Nothing so Franklin's still sticking with him hotter
- 16:48than it. He doesn't know the kid and never saw him. Well,
- 16:51if we don't get something today and we'll go to work on him again,
- 16:53he isn't going to be a See what is okay? Jack wanting pain?
- 17:00Then this is Jack? Did us Guthrie? Jack? Hello, Sergeant Asher
- 17:04Jack talked to Alan the phone the night he was killed. Oh, won't
- 17:07tell us about it. Son. He called and asked me to meet him
- 17:11at a place we used to go to him now and then, the Midget
- 17:14Cafe. I was right in the middle of dinner. At what time was
- 17:18this, you know? Oh? About eight o'clock in and around there he
- 17:22was talking from a phone booth. He'd been drinking a little bit. You
- 17:23mean he was drunk. No, no, I'm just drinking. You know,
- 17:26A friend's a drink and I can tell it. Why did he want
- 17:30you to meet him? Oh? Well, he said he'd met a girl
- 17:36there and didn't say who, and only had a few dollars with him,
- 17:38and he didn't have any wheels, didn't have a car. He wanted me
- 17:42to come by and bring him some money and show them around. I couldn't
- 17:48go, and I told him so. He called again a little while later,
- 17:51and this time he said I had to come over, and I asked
- 17:53him why. He said he thought he could get me in a good fight.
- 17:59I'd see how I am, and the guys are always doing that to
- 18:02me in a fight with who I don't know. You said it was a
- 18:06guide me there did you go over, Yes, I did. I got
- 18:08there about ten thirty, but he wasn't there anymore, so I came on
- 18:11home. You say, the name of this place is the Midget. Yeah,
- 18:15it's easy to find. Let's go out forty third Street, half a
- 18:19mile past the stone Quarry. It's nice to be friendly when you find yourself
- 18:40in a strange country. But do you know where in the world you wouldn't
- 18:44walk up to someone on the street, say, got a light bud and
- 18:47offer the man a cigarette. One place you most definitely wouldn't do that is
- 18:52in Saudi Arabia. In general, Saudi's observed the customs of their religion,
- 18:56which forbid smoking. They are also forbidden to dance or to drink alcoholic beverages.
- 19:03If you were stationed in Saudi Arabia or are visiting there, you do
- 19:07well to remember something else if you happen to be a smoker. Tobacco is
- 19:12not used in government offices nor in the presence of members of the royal family.
- 19:18By observing the customs of other countries, you make a friend for yours.
- 19:33Really, what's up, fellows routine? I can talk to some of
- 19:37the people who were working here night before last year. Well, I was
- 19:41on from six to closing. What's your name? Dave Chrystler, but they
- 19:45call me Fritsen. Do you know a man named al Hanson? No?
- 19:48I can't see you do Edward Franklin? No? Yeah, yeah, this
- 19:52is handsome. Take a look. No, we heard he was in here
- 19:56night before last. What it might have been? I don't know who.
- 20:00Wait a minute, I take him back. I served this guy himself.
- 20:03What's wrong with him in the picture there? What time did he come in?
- 20:06I don't know what he is? He sat right over there. I
- 20:08remember that. Tell us what you can with you? There's nothing too Telly
- 20:11come in. He had a few drinks and he laughed. Oh tell them
- 20:15I sat with him pro while. Yeah. Yeah, you want to talk
- 20:17to her? Sure? Where can we find them? Well, she's the
- 20:18bug. Night before last she was off, so she come in. She
- 20:22had a drink. You want her? Yeah? Yeah, wait, go
- 20:25tell me, tell me, hey, tell me. These two gentlemen of
- 20:29the police officers say they want to talk to me. Oh, sure,
- 20:32you can go ahead with what you're doing. What's your full name? Please
- 20:37tell them? Lazy? Where do you live? In thirty five sixteen?
- 20:41It's a matter of mind trouble, and we're investigating a homicide. I understand
- 20:47you had a few drinks with Al hans the night before last night, right
- 20:49Al Hansome? Oh eh, that is last name Hanson. Yeah, this
- 20:56is Al Hansons lazy. Oh sure he was killed night before last. Body
- 21:03was dumped in the stone quarry down the road. That nice kid, that
- 21:07nice kid, would you like to go outside in the car and took Yeah,
- 21:15it'd be better, come on. Okay, Oh how long have you
- 21:32known him? I just met him the other night when he was in here.
- 21:36Mind telling us how you meant him? Oh, he was just sitting
- 21:37there drinking by Himselfie kept looking at me. I was talking to Fritzy and
- 21:42well I went over and said I and we began talking. Made a couple
- 21:45of phone calls trying to get a friend of his to come over with his
- 21:48car. Did his friend show up? I don't know. I don't think
- 21:52so. Somebody on who spoiled it? My lacy? Well, I know
- 21:59this man Sarta. I met him just the other night before ed Franklin's his
- 22:03name. He wanted to take me out and I wouldn't go out with him.
- 22:07He said, he'd keep trying. Ed Franklin was in here that night,
- 22:11Yeah, looking for me. I guess is this him? Why?
- 22:18Yeah? How long did you say you've known him? Just one night?
- 22:22When he was in here before? What happened? I mean when he came
- 22:25in and he was sitting with Al Hansen. Oh, he saw Al was
- 22:29just a nice kid, and Ed began throwing money around, told us he
- 22:32was a big stock and bond man. Before he told me he was a
- 22:36lawyer. Either was believed what he said. We could tell he didn't believe
- 22:41him either. Al finally called him a phony, and Ed said he had
- 22:44a big Cadillac out in front. It wasn't phony at all. Well.
- 22:48I took Al to one side and told him I'd like to have another drink
- 22:52with him, but he'd have to get rid of Ed somehow, or he'd
- 22:53ruin our whole evening. Al told me to pretend I had to go and
- 22:57he'd meet me here later. The idea was it Ed was only buying drinks
- 23:02and hanging around to try and get me to go out with him. You
- 23:04wanted to be with Al? Sure, he wasn't any phony, He was
- 23:11real nice. Well, so I waited about five minutes. Then I said
- 23:15I had to get home. Ed wanted to take me, but I said
- 23:18I had in my own car. Instead of leaving, I just went around
- 23:22to the side and waited. Pretty soon I saw Ed come out. Was
- 23:26he alone? No? Al was with him. He was showing Al the
- 23:30Cadillac. No, he had it all right, but he still looked like
- 23:33a phony to me. He both got in the car. You saw them
- 23:37clearly. Yes. I I was in that little room right off the kitchen
- 23:40there. See where was the car park? Oh, right about here.
- 23:45They sat there and talked for a minute, and I saw I all start
- 23:48to get out, but Ed grabbed him. He's pretty big. They talked
- 23:52a little while after that, and then what happened, Oh that's it.
- 23:57What they drove off together. Al never came back. The lineup starring Bill
- 24:26Johnstone as Lieutenant Ben Guthrie and Jack Moyles. The Sergeant Pete Kuger was written
- 24:30by E. Jack Newman, with music by Eddie Dunsteader. Featured in tonight's
- 24:34cast were Harry Lang, Peter Leeds, Howard mcneer, Hal March, Jeannette
- 24:37Nolan, Jack Carroll and Paula Winslow. The Lineup was transcribed in Hollywood by
- 24:42Hi made del Viaier welcome back. Well somewhat abrupt ending, but then again,
- 24:49I don't think there was any doubt left to what happened or anything much
- 24:56for them to investigate overall and all story kind of a basic the guy looks
- 25:03guilty and yeah he's guilty story without a whole lot of twists and turns,
- 25:07so very straightforward, all right. Well, for some listener comments and feedback
- 25:12regarding the return of the Lineup, Laurie said, I liked this episode a
- 25:18lot. I recognized the case from another show, but that didn't determine my
- 25:22enjoyment. I've always had a soft spot for the Lineup and super glad to
- 25:27see it back on. Well, thanks so much. I'm glad you enjoyed
- 25:33it, Laurie, And of course we do have the Lineup for one more
- 25:37week, and after that, I believe we do have the return of another
- 25:44show that we did previously for a week. We will be returning with Police
- 25:52Headquarters. There were two episodes of that fifteen minute show that were lost at
- 26:02the time we podcast through, but they have both been found and we will
- 26:04bring them to you in two weeks. But next week listen for the lineup
- 26:10and Wednesday the Adventures of Philip Marlow. In the meantime, sends your comments
