- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Hey, welcome today to Corano to this video series.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: I'm glad you could be here.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: Today we're going to be looking at the Last Supper, the arrest, and the trial of Jesus.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: So we're going to be looking at some really important stuff.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: We have to look at a lot of scripture today.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: But the last days of Jesus' life here on earth as God in the flesh are very important to look at.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: Nothing, absolutely nothing, happened randomly.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: Everything had a significant purpose.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: So pray with me and we'll get started.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: Father God, thank you so much for the things that we are going to see today.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: And I just ask you to come and manifest yourself right here, right now, with truth, with knowledge, with insight, with all the things that your spirit does so well.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: Lord, speak to us this morning.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: I pray in Jesus' name.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: Amen.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: Jesus' last week on earth begins with his being anointed for burial by Mary.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: And this is the Mary and Martha and Lazarus Mary.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: That happens, it takes place in Bethany.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: We're not going to look at that today.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: I hope we look at it in the future.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: But after that anointing, we see the betrayal by Judas.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: Judas agrees to betray Jesus, and we read about it in Matthew 26.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: Then one of the twelve, the one called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and asked, What are you willing to give me if I hand him over to you?
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: So they counted out for him thirty silver coins.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: From then on, Judas watched for an opportunity to hand him over.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: Now God led the prophet Zechariah to write and to speak these specific words in Zechariah chapter 11.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: I told them, If you think it best, give me my pay, if not keep it.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: So they paid me thirty pieces of silver.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: And the Lord said to me, Throw it to the potter, the handsome price at which they valued me.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them to the potter at the house of the Lord.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: After Judas's betrayal of Jesus and after Jesus' arrest, Judas seems to be filled with remorse, and he goes to the temple wanting to give the money back, kind of to undo what he's done.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: And he ends up throwing the silver coins into them, into the temple, to the priest, because they won't take them from him.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: This is what we read in Matthew 27.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: The chief priest picked up the coins and said, It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: So they decided to use the money to buy the potter's field as a burial place for foreigners.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: So to fulfill prophecy, this prophecy from Zechariah, the exact price of the betrayal had to be 30 pieces of silver.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: And it had to include the potter's field, the potter's house, and happen in the temple.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: Next we see the preparation for the Passover.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: We read about that in Mark 14.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: On the first day of the feast of unleavened bread, when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb, Jesus' disciples asked him, Where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: So he sent two of his disciples, telling them, Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: Follow him.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: Say to the owner of the house, he enters, the teacher asks, Where is my guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: He will show you a large upper room furnished and ready.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: Make preparations for us there.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: The disciples left and went into the city and found things just as Jesus had told them.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: So they prepared the Passover.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: Notice the ambiguity here of the location of the Passover.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: It's pretty obvious that the location and the details of the Last Supper were meant to be a secret.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: Jesus was purposefully keeping them in the dark regarding the location.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: The disciples were told, were not told the location or where to gather.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: Instead, they were led by a set of circumstances, all of which were out of the ordinary.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: First, they would see a man carrying a clay water vessel.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: Why is this unusual?
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: Because men didn't carry those kinds of jugs.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: Women carried those, and men carried water in wineskins.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: When they followed this man to his destination, they were to ask the owner of the house for a room for the teacher, and he would show them where they were to make the preparations.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: Why would there be this need for such secrecy?
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: Let's think about that for a minute with Judas pertaining to him.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: He had already betrayed Jesus to the priests, and he was waiting for an opportune moment to hand him over.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: Jesus carefully removes the opportunity to be arrested at the Passover meal by keeping Judas in the dark until it's too late for him to notify the officials as to their exact meeting place.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: It seems totally obvious that Jesus was controlling all of these events.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: Now we come to the Passover or the Last Supper.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: Once they're all gathered in the upper room, the meal commences.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: Sonic Light says, Toward the aft toward afternoon of Thursday, 14 Nisan, the lambs, one per household, would be brought to the temple court where the priest sacrificed them.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: The priest took the blood and passed it in basins along a line till it was poured out at the foot of the altar.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: They also burned the lamb's fat on the altar of burnt offerings.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: The singing of the halel accompanied these steps.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: So here is the sequence.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: All of this is gonna start to make sense in a minute, but here is the sequence of the events in the upper room, the evening right before Jesus' arrest.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: The disciples argue over who is the greatest.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: Jesus washes the disciples' feet, showing them his true humility.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: Jesus identifies his betrayer as Judas.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: Judas leaves.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: Jesus teaches, and it's some of the most amazing teaching that he does in John 13, 14, 15.
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: Jesus predicts Peter's denial in John 13, and then he teaches some more in chapter 14, and they all sing a hymn and they leave the upper room.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: Remember the Passover meal symbolizes.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: Oh boy.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: Hold on a second.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: I just there we go.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: Crisis averted.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: They remember that the Passover meal symbolized the deliverance of the Israelites out of Egypt.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: The perfect lamb was slaughtered, and its blood was put on the door frames and the posts of their homes, which when the death angel saw it, he passed over their homes.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: We get a history lesson now about the Passover of Jesus' day in Sonic Light.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: After sunset, the household would gather in a home to eat the Passover lamb, which was by this time, by this time had been roasted with bitter herbs.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: The head of the household began the meal with the Thanksgiving blessing called the Passover Kedush, which means sanctification.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: It was a blessing over the wine or praying over the first of the four cups.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: A preliminary course of greens and bitter herbs was followed by the Passover Hagadah, if I'm saying that right, in which a boy, one of the boys would ask the meaning of all of this, and the head of the household would explain the symbols in terms of the Exodus.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: Then they would sing the first part of the halel, which was Psalm 113 to Psalm 114.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: Though the precise order is disputed, apparently a second cup of wine introduced the main course, which was followed by a third cup, known as the cup of blessing, accompanied by another prayer of thanksgiving.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: The participants then sang the rest of the halal, Psalm 114 to 118, and they probably drank the fourth cup of wine.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: So what do these four cups represent?
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: The four cups of wine used in the Passover Seder primarily symbolize the four distinct redemptions promised by God to the Hebrews, as told in Hebrew in Exodus 6, 6 through 7.
- 9:25SPEAKER_00: The first cup is I will take you out.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: The second cup is I will save you.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: The third cup is I will redeem you.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: The fourth cup is I will take you as a nation.
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: It is the cup of ingathering or the cup of consummation.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: The fifth cup at the Seder meal was the cup of Elijah.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: And this is the cup that they set aside for Elijah during the second half of the Seder, and they do not drink from it.
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: They don't drink that cup.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: This is taken from a Jewish website that I saw.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: It says, our sages instituted that we should drink a cup of wine, a toast, if you will, for each one of these four expressions.
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: We recite the kadush over the first cup.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: We read the Exodus story from the Hagarah over the second cup.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: We recite Grace after meals over the third cup, and we sing the big halel, psalms and hymns of praises to our God over the fourth cup.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: As I read this part of the halel, which is there on your handout sheet, I want you to underline anything that stands out to you as as and reminds you of the sacrifice that Jesus is going to make.
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: Psalm 118, 19 through 29.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: Open for me the gates of righteousness.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: I will enter and give thanks to the Lord.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: This is the gate of the Lord, through which the righteous may enter.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: I will give you thanks, for you answered me.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: You have become my salvation.
- 11:03SPEAKER_00: The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone.
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: The Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes.
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: This is the day the Lord has made.
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: Let us rejoice and be glad in it.
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: O Lord, save us.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: O Lord, grant us success.
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
- 11:24SPEAKER_00: From the house of the Lord we bless you.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: The Lord is God, and he has made his light shine upon us.
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: With bows in hand, join the festival procession up to the horns of the altar.
- 11:38SPEAKER_00: You are my God, and I will give you thanks.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: You are my God and I will exalt you.
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: His love endures forever.
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: That is partially what Jesus and the disciples were singing, were remembering, were celebrating in the upper room.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: This is how the Passover had been has been celebrated for centuries up to this point.
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: These verses of Psalm 118 were sung at the end of each Passover Seder meal.
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: The significance of them now is staggering, especially for Jesus.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: Can you imagine the emotion that Jesus had over these words and knowing, knowing how He would fulfill them in just a few short hours?
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: Can you imagine the emotion?
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: It had to be overwhelming for him.
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: Every year of his life, he has celebrated the Passover with these words in this way.
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: And I'm sure that every year it was a reminder of what lay before him, of what he was going to do in fulfilling all of this.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: But now Jesus puts his own mark on this Passover meal.
- 13:07SPEAKER_00: In a matter of hours, he will be the Lamb who takes away the sin of the world.
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: So he changes the Passover meal to the Lord to the Last Supper, and he institutes communion.
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: Matthew 26.
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks, and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take and eat, this is my body.
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and offered it to them, saying, Drink from it, all of you.
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the give forgiveness of sins.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: I tell you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it anew with you in my Father's kingdom.
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: All that the Passover meal anticipated was about to be achieved or made certain because Jesus was the Passover Lamb who was establishing his covenant with his followers.
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: Bob Deffenboss says, the old covenant being fulfilled in Christ was to be set aside.
- 14:25SPEAKER_00: The kingdom, while still future, was certain to be established because Messiah, at his first advent, his first coming, had laid its foundation by his sacrificial death.
- 14:37SPEAKER_00: All of the redemptive promises of God are about to be fulfilled relating to Jesus' first coming.
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: All of them.
- 14:49SPEAKER_00: A traditional prayer that many Jews use when thanking God for the food was Blessed are you, O Lord, our God, King of the universe, who brings forth bread from the earth.
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: Remember that the term Bethlehem is the house of bread.
- 15:09SPEAKER_00: Bethlehem, where Jesus is born.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: It's likely that Jesus said these words, and then he broke the pieces and distributed them among the disciples.
- 15:21SPEAKER_00: And he instructed them to eat it with these words, This is my body.
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: Those words, this is my body, are not part of the Passover Seder meal.
- 15:33SPEAKER_00: Jesus' actions of breaking the bread and then distributing it were both symbolic and significant.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: Again, Bob Deffenbaugh says, Jesus was linking his sacrifice with redemption history.
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: When he instituted this rite during the Passover meal, the Israelites associated their redemption from Egypt by eating the Passover meal.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: Now Jesus' disciples were to associate the redemption with Jesus' death, symbolized in this similar meal.
- 16:10SPEAKER_00: Everything was significant.
- 16:13SPEAKER_00: Remember, the third cup symbolized redemption.
- 16:17SPEAKER_00: That's what he would now do.
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: But the fourth cup corresponds to the promise: I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: Exodus 6.7.
- 16:30SPEAKER_00: Jesus is pledging to drink the cup of redemption immediately ahead of him.
- 16:36SPEAKER_00: That's what he's going to, he's prepared to do.
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: He is also vowing not to drink the cup of consummation in gathering until the kingdom in its fullness has been ushered in.
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: Then he will drink the cup with his people, with us in heaven after the rapture.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: When Jesus once again takes up the cup, it will be in his kingdom in heaven with his people.
- 17:07SPEAKER_00: When Jesus goes and leaves the upper room to go to Gethsemane, Psalm 118 would have been on his lips.
- 17:21SPEAKER_00: In my anguish, I cried to the Lord, and he answered by setting me free.
- 17:29SPEAKER_00: The Lord is with me.
- 17:31SPEAKER_00: I will not be afraid.
- 17:33SPEAKER_00: What can man do to me?
- 17:35SPEAKER_00: The Lord is with me.
- 17:37SPEAKER_00: He is my helper.
- 17:39SPEAKER_00: I will look in triumph on my enemies.
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: The Lord's right hand has done mighty things.
- 17:45SPEAKER_00: The Lord's right hand is lifted high.
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: I will not die but live and will proclaim what the Lord has done.
- 17:58SPEAKER_00: Everything that happens is significant, and it shows Jesus' sovereign control over the destinies of himself and his disciples.
- 18:11SPEAKER_00: How powerful are those words that he would have spoken?
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: I just can imagine his emotion as he's speaking, singing them, whatever they did, knowing that that is what he had to anchor his soul in in the next 24 hours.
- 18:31SPEAKER_00: Sonic Light says, Matthew presented Jesus as knowing exactly what lay ahead of him.
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: He was not a victim of fate.
- 18:39SPEAKER_00: He deliberately approached his death as a willing sacrifice and prepared his disciples carefully for the trauma of that event.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: Remember, Judas leaves the upper room.
- 18:54SPEAKER_00: Was it so that he could bring the soldiers back to the upper room?
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: Probably.
- 19:00SPEAKER_00: The temple guard must have maybe perhaps came first to the upper room where they had been, and not finding him, they they went in search for him at the places that he frequented.
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: And Judas would have known those places really well.
- 19:17SPEAKER_00: At some point, either in the upper room or on the way to the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prays his high priestly prayer, John 17, that we looked at last week.
- 19:28SPEAKER_00: The next sequential thing that happens is his arrest.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: The Kidron Valley forms the eastern boundary of Jerusalem.
- 19:38SPEAKER_00: And it the Kidron was a wet wadi or a dry creek bed, stream bed that contained water only when it rained hard.
- 19:49SPEAKER_00: But the most important aspect about this Wadi is that it led from the temple altar down to into this ravine, to the Wadi.
- 20:00SPEAKER_00: At Passover, when the lambs were sacrificed at the temple, the blood from the slaughtered lambs drained into this valley, this wadi.
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: To cross over the Mount of Olives to where the Garden of Gethsemane is, you had to cross this valley, the Kidron Valley.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: Sometimes they say that the blood was running so thick that they would also pour water down with that blood, mixed with that blood to keep the blood going down into the valley.
- 20:36SPEAKER_00: Remember, they have just celebrated Passover in the upper room, so it's likely that this valley would have been running red with the blood of the lambs that were slaughtered that afternoon, that very afternoon.
- 20:49SPEAKER_00: They have to cross over this blood-filled wadi to get to Gethsemane.
- 20:55SPEAKER_00: Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, Sit here while I go over there and pray.
- 21:02SPEAKER_00: He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, James and John, along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled.
- 21:09SPEAKER_00: Then he said to them, My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death.
- 21:14SPEAKER_00: Stay here and keep watch with me.
- 21:17SPEAKER_00: Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me.
- 21:29SPEAKER_00: Yet not as I will, but as you will.
- 21:33SPEAKER_00: The cup of salvation, this cup of redemption, are what Jesus was asking his father to remove and to take from him.
- 21:45SPEAKER_00: In essence, I think he's saying, Is there any way this can be accomplished apart from my death?
- 21:54SPEAKER_00: But he knew that our salvation couldn't.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: Be accomplished without his death.
- 22:03SPEAKER_00: We hear his humanity in these verses.
- 22:08SPEAKER_00: We hear the angst of what he is going to experience.
- 22:13SPEAKER_00: The fact that Judas knew the place because Jesus had often met there with his disciples shows that Jesus is not trying to avoid arrest.
- 22:25SPEAKER_00: Instead, he deliberately went to a place where he knew Judas could count on finding him.
- 22:32SPEAKER_00: John 18.
- 22:34SPEAKER_00: When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley.
- 22:39SPEAKER_00: On the other side, there was an olive grove, and he and his disciples went into it.
- 22:43SPEAKER_00: Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.
- 22:49SPEAKER_00: So Judas came to the grove, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and Pharisees.
- 22:56SPEAKER_00: They were carrying torches, lanterns, and weapons.
- 23:00SPEAKER_00: Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, Who is it you want?
- 23:09SPEAKER_00: Jesus of Nazareth, they replied, I am he, Jesus said.
- 23:14SPEAKER_00: And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.
- 23:18SPEAKER_00: When Jesus said, I am he, they drew back and fell to the ground.
- 23:23SPEAKER_00: Again he asked them, Who is it you want?
- 23:25SPEAKER_00: And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.
- 23:28SPEAKER_00: I told you that I am he, Jesus answered.
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: If you are looking for me, then let these men go.
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled.
- 23:38SPEAKER_00: I have not lost one of those you gave me.
- 23:41SPEAKER_00: Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear.
- 23:46SPEAKER_00: The servant's name was Malchus.
- 23:48SPEAKER_00: Jesus commanded Peter, put your sword away.
- 23:51SPEAKER_00: Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?
- 23:57SPEAKER_00: When Jesus approaches the soldiers, he says, Who is it you you want, not what do you want?
- 24:02SPEAKER_00: He knew their intentions totally.
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: James Montgomery Boyce says, From beginning to end, Jesus and not his captors, was in complete charge of the situation.
- 24:14SPEAKER_00: It was he who delayed in the garden while the arresting party was coming.
- 24:18SPEAKER_00: It was he who went forth to meet them, and thereby surrendering himself voluntarily.
- 24:24SPEAKER_00: Moreover, even at the very moment of his arrest, he showed his control over circumstances.
- 24:30SPEAKER_00: He demonstrated power over the soldiers, grace toward his own disciples, and mercy to those who were his enemies.
- 24:38SPEAKER_00: At Jesus' omnipotent power, the soldiers fall to the ground when he speaks his majestic holy name of I am.
- 24:50SPEAKER_00: If we can see Jesus's arrest in light of his control over the events, it will show us that this wasn't some tragedy that overtook Jesus.
- 25:01SPEAKER_00: It wasn't.
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: It's going exactly the way the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit wanted it to go.
- 25:12SPEAKER_00: Three things stand out in this arrest.
- 25:15SPEAKER_00: First, Jesus had not slept that night, but even though he was fatigued, he never loses control.
- 25:23SPEAKER_00: He doesn't sleep that night, he doesn't sleep the whole next day.
- 25:27SPEAKER_00: And second, he responds willingly, he doesn't resist at all.
- 25:32SPEAKER_00: And third, we see his compassion both for his disciples and his enemies.
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: From the Gospel of Luke, we know that Jesus miraculously heals Malchus's ear.
- 25:44SPEAKER_00: In order to achieve our cup of salvation, the cup of God's wrath is going to be poured out on Jesus.
- 25:58SPEAKER_00: The cup of God's wrath.
- 26:00SPEAKER_00: The wrath you and I deserve, totally deserve, was poured out on him so that those who believe in him will never have to experience God's wrath.
- 26:16SPEAKER_00: We will never experience it because Christ experienced it for us.
- 26:24SPEAKER_00: It was a necessary cup, and Jesus was committed and he was resolute to enduring it.
- 26:34SPEAKER_00: Next we move to the trials, and it's very important to understand the significance of these trials.
- 26:42SPEAKER_00: John 18.
- 26:43SPEAKER_00: Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials arrested Jesus.
- 26:48SPEAKER_00: They bound him and brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year.
- 26:54SPEAKER_00: Caiaphas was the one who advised the Jews that it would be good if one man died for the people.
- 27:01SPEAKER_00: Chuck Swindal says, from this point on, Jesus is no longer free.
- 27:05SPEAKER_00: He becomes property of the state in legal terms.
- 27:09SPEAKER_00: Jesus is railroaded through the most falicious, unfair, disorderly, illegal series of trials in the history of Judasprudence.
- 27:21SPEAKER_00: No man was ever more innocent.
- 27:24SPEAKER_00: No trials were ever more unjust.
- 27:28SPEAKER_00: In all, there are six trials, three Jewish and three Roman.
- 27:33SPEAKER_00: The charge of the Jewish trial is blasphemy, and the charge of the Roman trials is treason.
- 27:41SPEAKER_00: The Jews took their legal instruction from the Mosaic law, which was interpreted to them for them through the Talmud.
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: Here is what their law says about someone who is being tried.
- 27:55SPEAKER_00: Arrest for a capital crime must be made in broad daylight, not at night.
- 28:00SPEAKER_00: Secondly, arrest for the cap a capital crime must not be made based on information by the offender's followers.
- 28:07SPEAKER_00: For if the accused were a criminal, so were his followers.
- 28:12SPEAKER_00: Third, no Jewish trial may be held at night, that is between 6 p.m.
- 28:16SPEAKER_00: and 6 a.m.
- 28:18SPEAKER_00: A trial is never to be held before only one person.
- 28:22SPEAKER_00: Two of Jesus' three trials occur sometime between 2 a.m.
- 28:27SPEAKER_00: and are done before a single individual.
- 28:30SPEAKER_00: Number four, members of the Jewish court, after hearing the testimony regarding the one accused of a capital crime, are not permitted to render an immediate verdict, but are required instead to return to their homes for two days and nights, eating only light food, light wine, and sleeping well.
- 28:51SPEAKER_00: Then they are to return and hear again the testimony against the accused and cast their vote.
- 28:58SPEAKER_00: And fifth, the Sanhedrin must vote one at a time, the youngest men first, so as not to be influenced by the older men on the council.
- 29:08SPEAKER_00: In the third trial, they all vote simultaneously.
- 29:12SPEAKER_00: It's important to know what should have been done and how it should have been carried out in order to see just how illegal Jesus' trials actually were.
- 29:25SPEAKER_00: So first we look at the Jewish trials.
- 29:29SPEAKER_00: And the first one is a preliminary hearing by night before Annas.
- 29:34SPEAKER_00: The second one is the trial before Caiaphas, and the third one is the trial before the Sanhedrin.
- 29:42SPEAKER_00: Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.
- 29:47SPEAKER_00: I have spoken openly to the world, Jesus replied.
- 29:50SPEAKER_00: I always taught in synagogues or at the temple, where all the Jews come together.
- 29:56SPEAKER_00: I said nothing in secret.
- 29:57SPEAKER_00: Why question me?
- 29:59SPEAKER_00: Ask those who heard me.
- 30:00SPEAKER_00: Surely they know what I said.
- 30:02SPEAKER_00: When Jesus said this, one of the officials nearby struck him in the face.
- 30:16SPEAKER_00: But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?
- 30:20SPEAKER_00: Then Annas sent him, still bound, to Caiaphas, the high priest.
- 30:24SPEAKER_00: This trial is illegal.
- 30:27SPEAKER_00: Which one of their laws did it break?
- 30:30SPEAKER_00: Jesus is tried during the night by one man, Annas.
- 30:33SPEAKER_00: There's no other testimony from anyone else.
- 30:37SPEAKER_00: Annas, the father-in-law of Caiaphas the high priest, and he was the wealthiest, most influential man in Jerusalem.
- 30:46SPEAKER_00: He owned and operated the entire money-changing system, which was corrupt to the core, and behind the group that Jesus chased out of the temple.
- 30:58SPEAKER_00: And ever since Jesus overturned those money changers' tables, Annas has had a personal vendetta against Jesus.
- 31:07SPEAKER_00: So now he goes before Caiaphas.
- 31:10SPEAKER_00: Caiaphas is the current high priest, the weak son-in-law of Annas.
- 31:15SPEAKER_00: They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, elders, and teachers of the law came together.
- 31:21SPEAKER_00: Peter followed him at a distance, right into the court of the high priest.
- 31:24SPEAKER_00: There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire.
- 31:28SPEAKER_00: The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death.
- 31:38SPEAKER_00: Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree.
- 31:43SPEAKER_00: Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, Why are you not going to answer?
- 31:50SPEAKER_00: What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?
- 31:55SPEAKER_00: But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer.
- 31:58SPEAKER_00: Again the high priest asked him, Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?
- 32:05SPEAKER_00: I am, Jesus said Jesus.
- 32:08SPEAKER_00: And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the mighty one and coming on the clouds of heaven.
- 32:16SPEAKER_00: The high priest tore his clothes.
- 32:18SPEAKER_00: Why do we need any more witnesses?
- 32:20SPEAKER_00: He asked.
- 32:23SPEAKER_00: What do you think?
- 32:24SPEAKER_00: They all condemned him as worthy of death.
- 32:27SPEAKER_00: Then some began to spit at him.
- 32:29SPEAKER_00: They blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, Prophesy.
- 32:33SPEAKER_00: And the guards took him and beat him.
- 32:37SPEAKER_00: This trial was illegal.
- 32:39SPEAKER_00: Which of their laws did it break?
- 32:42SPEAKER_00: It took place during the night.
- 32:45SPEAKER_00: A preliminary hearing wasn't allowed, and they weren't in their chamber, not to mention the false witnesses.
- 32:54SPEAKER_00: This is the hearing where Peter denied Jesus three times during this one.
- 32:59SPEAKER_00: The three times, and then the rooster crowed.
- 33:02SPEAKER_00: And now we see the trial before the Sanhedrin.
- 33:05SPEAKER_00: The Sanhedrin are the Supreme Court of the Jews with complete jurisdiction over all religious and theological matters.
- 33:15SPEAKER_00: The Romans allowed them this jurisdiction.
- 33:19SPEAKER_00: The members met in a place called the council chambers, and it was there and there only that they could carry out any official business, and then only in daylight hours.
- 33:31SPEAKER_00: Mark 15, very early in the morning, the chief priests and the elders, the teachers of the law, and the whole Sanhedrin reached a decision.
- 33:42SPEAKER_00: They bound Jesus and led him away and handed him over to Pilate.
- 33:48SPEAKER_00: At daybreak, Luke tells us, at daybreak, the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the teachers of the law, met together and Jesus was led before them.
- 34:04SPEAKER_00: Jesus answered, If I tell you, you will not believe me, and if I asked you, you would not answer.
- 34:12SPEAKER_00: But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.
- 34:19SPEAKER_00: They all asked, Are you then the Son of God?
- 34:24SPEAKER_00: He replied, You are right in saying I am.
- 34:30SPEAKER_00: Then they said, Why do we need any more testimony?
- 34:32SPEAKER_00: We have heard it from our own lips.
- 34:35SPEAKER_00: This trial is illegal.
- 34:37SPEAKER_00: Which of their laws did it break?
- 34:40SPEAKER_00: There are no witnesses, no proven evidence, no proper courtroom procedure.
- 34:46SPEAKER_00: The vote on the verdict was supposed to take place one by one, from the youngest to the oldest, so that the older members wouldn't influence the younger members.
- 34:58SPEAKER_00: This trial lasted no more than 20 to 30 minutes.
- 35:01SPEAKER_00: They voted simultaneously and it was a rush to judgment.
- 35:07SPEAKER_00: Now we move to Jesus' three-pronged Roman trials.
- 35:13SPEAKER_00: Under Roman law, listen to this.
- 35:17SPEAKER_00: Under Roman law, the Jews were prohibited from putting someone to death.
- 35:30SPEAKER_00: They had to send Jesus to stand trial before the governor, and in this case, that is Pilate.
- 35:38SPEAKER_00: The Sanhedrin accused Jesus of blasphemy.
- 35:42SPEAKER_00: But what, but that wouldn't hold up with the in the Roman courts.
- 35:53SPEAKER_00: And all four are found in John chapter 18.
- 35:57SPEAKER_00: So the first step before Pilate is the step of accusation.
- 36:02SPEAKER_00: Then the Jews led Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor.
- 36:08SPEAKER_00: By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness, the Jews did not enter the palace.
- 36:16SPEAKER_00: They wanted to be able to eat the Passover.
- 36:18SPEAKER_00: So Pilate came out to them and asked, What are the charges you are bringing against this man?
- 36:26SPEAKER_00: If he were not a criminal, they replied, we would not have handed him over to you.
- 36:30SPEAKER_00: Pilate said, Take him yourself and judge him by your law then.
- 36:34SPEAKER_00: But we have no right to execute anyone, the Jews objected.
- 36:40SPEAKER_00: This happened so that the words Jesus had spoken to the kind of death he was going to die would be fulfilled.
- 36:47SPEAKER_00: Step two is the interrogation.
- 36:50SPEAKER_00: Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus, and asked him, Are you the king of the Jews?
- 36:57SPEAKER_00: Is that your own idea?
- 36:59SPEAKER_00: Jesus asked, or did others talk to you about me?
- 37:02SPEAKER_00: Am I a Jew?
- 37:04SPEAKER_00: Pilate replied.
- 37:11SPEAKER_00: Step three is the defense.
- 37:14SPEAKER_00: Jesus said, My kingdom is not of this world.
- 37:19SPEAKER_00: If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jews.
- 37:23SPEAKER_00: But now my kingdom is from another place.
- 37:27SPEAKER_00: Oh, you are a king then, said Pilate.
- 37:30SPEAKER_00: Jesus answered, You are right in saying I am a king.
- 37:35SPEAKER_00: In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world to testify to the truth.
- 37:41SPEAKER_00: Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.
- 37:44SPEAKER_00: What is truth, Pilate said?
- 37:48SPEAKER_00: Step four is the verdict.
- 37:54SPEAKER_00: Convinced that Jesus is absolutely not a threat to Rome and that his activities weren't treasonous, Pilate gives his verdict.
- 38:05SPEAKER_00: With this, he went out again to the Jews and said, I find no basis of a charge against him.
- 38:11SPEAKER_00: But they, the chief priests and the crowd, insisted, he stirs up the people all over Judea by his teaching.
- 38:18SPEAKER_00: He started out in Galilee and has come all the way here.
- 38:22SPEAKER_00: On hearing this, Pilate asked if the man was a Galilean.
- 38:26SPEAKER_00: When he learned that Jesus was under Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at the time.
- 38:34SPEAKER_00: And now we see him before Herod.
- 38:37SPEAKER_00: When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased because for a long time he had wanted to see him.
- 38:42SPEAKER_00: From what he had heard about him, he hoped to see him perform some miracle.
- 38:46SPEAKER_00: He plied him with many questions, but Jesus gave no answer.
- 38:50SPEAKER_00: The chief priests and the teachers of the law were standing there vehemently accusing him.
- 38:56SPEAKER_00: Then Herod and his soldiers ridiculed and mocked him.
- 38:59SPEAKER_00: Dressing him in an elegant robe, they sent him back to Pilate.
- 39:03SPEAKER_00: That day Herod and Pilate became friends.
- 39:06SPEAKER_00: Before this, they had been enemies.
- 39:08SPEAKER_00: This is the same Herod who beheaded John the Baptist.
- 39:12SPEAKER_00: In the face of jesting and vulgar innuendos, Jesus stands in royal, regal dignity.
- 39:24SPEAKER_00: Silent and composed.
- 39:28SPEAKER_00: This infuriates his enemies, so they wrap a kingly robe around him, and in mockery they they return him back to Pilate.
- 39:37SPEAKER_00: Pilate walks a very tight rope between upholding justice and placating the Jews when Jesus is returned to him.
- 39:56SPEAKER_00: Luke 23, Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers and the people, and said to them, You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion.
- 40:07SPEAKER_00: I have examined him in your presence and have found no basis for your charges against him, and neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us.
- 40:18SPEAKER_00: As you can see, he has done nothing deserving death.
- 40:22SPEAKER_00: Therefore I will punish him and then release him.
- 40:25SPEAKER_00: And that is when the crowd went crazy.
- 40:28SPEAKER_00: With one voice they cried out, Away with this man, release Barabbas to us.
- 40:33SPEAKER_00: Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate appealed to them again, but they kept shouting, Crucify him, crucify him.
- 40:40SPEAKER_00: For the third time, for the third time he spoke to them, Why?
- 40:46SPEAKER_00: What crime has this man committed?
- 40:49SPEAKER_00: I have found no grounds for the death penalty.
- 40:52SPEAKER_00: Therefore I will have him punished and then release him.
- 40:56SPEAKER_00: But the loud shouts, they insistently demanded that he be crucified, and their shouts prevailed.
- 41:03SPEAKER_00: So Pilate decided to grant their demand.
- 41:08SPEAKER_00: He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, the one they asked for, and surrendered Jesus to their will.
- 41:24SPEAKER_00: It was not to the will of the Jewish leaders that Jesus was surrendered to.
- 41:34SPEAKER_00: It was the will of the Father.
- 41:47SPEAKER_00: Always.
- 42:56SPEAKER_00: And he steadfastly kept to that obedience for the sake of the disobedient.
- 43:05SPEAKER_00: You and me.
- 43:09SPEAKER_00: Let's pray.
- 43:12SPEAKER_00: Lord Jesus, we thank you so much that you were resolute in being obedient all the way to the cross.
- 43:31SPEAKER_00: To taking the wrath of God upon yourself so that we never have to.
- 43:40SPEAKER_00: So that we can be gathered to you at some point and be with you where we will see your glory and the glory of the Father.
- 43:54SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 43:57SPEAKER_00: I thank you that everything was under your control in your arrest and your trials, and that we see that clearly today.
- 44:10SPEAKER_00: And it was all because you were going to be obedient to the will of the Father.
- 44:15SPEAKER_00: How we praise you for your obedience because it brought our salvation.
- 44:21SPEAKER_00: Thank you, Lord.
- 44:23SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 44:25SPEAKER_00: In Jesus' name I pray.
- 44:27SPEAKER_00: Amen.
- 44:30SPEAKER_00: I hope today that you really have understood and seen just how incredible the arrest and trials of Jesus, how unfair they were, how how incredible they were.
- 44:44SPEAKER_00: And it's foundational to our faith that we understand this.
- 44:48SPEAKER_00: Thank you for being with me today, and I ask, and I just ask God to bless you.
- 44:54SPEAKER_00: I'll see you next time.
