- 0:00Speaker 1: Let us pray. And he said unto them, Be not affrighted.
- 0:05Speaker 1: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified. He is risen.
- 0:11Speaker 1: He is not here. Behold the place where they laid him.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Mark 16.6 Thank you, God, that through your promise in
- 0:21Speaker 1: the garden, we were given new life in Jesus. Even
- 0:27Speaker 1: though his body was bruised by the crucifixion, His act
- 0:31Speaker 1: of resurrection crushed the head of the serpent Satan forever.
- 0:37Speaker 1: For in doing so, you took the power away from
- 0:40Speaker 1: sin and death, Jesus. When I am tempted to go
- 0:45Speaker 1: back to the sins of my past, remind me, Holy Spirit,
- 0:50Speaker 1: that they are not there. Remind me that through the death, burial,
- 0:55Speaker 1: and resurrection of Jesus, my sins were washed away by
- 0:59Speaker 1: the blood of the Lamb.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Hallelujah.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Thank you, Jesus, that through your sacrifice I have new
- 1:09Speaker 1: life and new power. Thank you, Lord, that the stone
- 1:13Speaker 1: was rolled away and that the tomb is empty. I
- 1:18Speaker 1: choose to celebrate because an empty tomb means an occupied
- 1:24Speaker 1: throne ready for me to approach, to tap into the
- 1:28Speaker 1: greatest power, provision, and love. I've ever known. In Jesus' name.
- 1:38Speaker 3: Amen.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Thanks for making prayer a priority in your life. To
- 1:44Speaker 1: hear the Bible come to life, stay tuned for the
- 1:47Speaker 1: Bible in a Year. Brought to you by BibleInAYear.com.
- 1:59Speaker 4: The Resurrection In our last story, we learned about the
- 2:03Speaker 4: death of Jesus on a cross and the offering up
- 2:06Speaker 4: of his life for the sins of humanity. After his death,
- 2:10Speaker 4: he was placed and buried in the tomb of a
- 2:12Speaker 4: man named Joseph. In this story, we will learn about
- 2:16Speaker 4: the glorious resurrection of Jesus Christ as inspired by the Gospels.
- 2:25Speaker 3: Hello and welcome to the Bible in a Year podcast.
- 2:28Speaker 3: I'm Jack Graham. In yesterday's reading, we heard how Jesus
- 2:32Speaker 3: went to the cross, suffered, and died there at Calvary
- 2:36Speaker 3: for our sins. His physical pain was unimaginable, but the
- 2:40Speaker 3: pain of separation from the Heavenly Father was even greater,
- 2:45Speaker 3: as the one who was sinless now bears our sins.
- 2:48Speaker 3: The Father, God Himself, turned His back upon His darling
- 2:52Speaker 3: Son as the sins of the world were placed on Him.
- 2:55Speaker 3: The wrath of God came upon Jesus that day, And
- 2:58Speaker 3: Christ was judged for our sins. He bore the weight
- 3:02Speaker 3: of the world. And yet in that sacrifice, the justice
- 3:06Speaker 3: of God himself was satisfied so that we now can
- 3:09Speaker 3: have a relationship with God. That relationship with God is
- 3:13Speaker 3: made possible for what we read about today. And that
- 3:16Speaker 3: is that Jesus is alive because he came out of
- 3:19Speaker 3: the grave. The resurrection is our subject. So let's listen now.
- 3:27Speaker 4: Christ's death had caused the earth itself to cry out
- 3:30Speaker 4: in mourning. His disciples hiding and alone mimicked the earth
- 3:35Speaker 4: in sorrow. Though the morning sun had come the world
- 3:40Speaker 4: still felt dark. A fear and trembling came over all
- 3:44Speaker 4: that were once loyal to Jesus. Would they do to
- 3:47Speaker 4: them what they did to Jesus? In fear of their
- 3:51Speaker 4: lives and embarrassment of their cowardice the disciples hid themselves away.
- 3:57Speaker 4: Those who had conspired to kill Jesus suddenly had felt
- 4:00Speaker 4: an uneasiness bubble up in them. The day after Jesus' crucifixion,
- 4:05Speaker 4: they had come to Pilate and said to him, This
- 4:08Speaker 4: man we have put to death once said that he
- 4:11Speaker 4: would be raised again on the third day. We must
- 4:14Speaker 4: have guards around the tomb lest his disciples take his
- 4:16Speaker 4: body and claim he was risen from the dead. Pilate
- 4:20Speaker 4: heard what the Pharisees said and agreed. Send guards to
- 4:24Speaker 4: make sure the tomb is buried and sealed. Post guards
- 4:28Speaker 4: in front of the tomb to make sure the disciples
- 4:30Speaker 4: do not attempt to steal Jesus' body. On the third day,
- 4:34Speaker 4: in the cool of the morning, Mary Magdalene and Mary
- 4:38Speaker 4: the mother of James left to go visit the tomb
- 4:40Speaker 4: where Jesus had laid. They held spices and flowers to
- 4:44Speaker 4: lay beside the entrance of the tomb. Approaching the tomb,
- 4:48Speaker 4: their footsteps were interrupted by the shaking of the earth
- 4:51Speaker 4: beneath them. A bright light flashed before them. and the
- 4:55Speaker 4: guards beside the tomb fell to the ground motionless. The
- 4:59Speaker 4: two women opened their eyes to the sight of an
- 5:01Speaker 4: angel sitting beside Jesus' tomb. The stone that once sealed
- 5:05Speaker 4: it was rolled away. Looking at the women with a
- 5:08Speaker 4: face shining brighter than the sun, the angel said, Why
- 5:12Speaker 4: do you seek the living among the dead? He is
- 5:15Speaker 4: not here. He has risen as he said he would.
- 5:19Speaker 4: Now go quickly and tell his disciples. As the two
- 5:24Speaker 4: women fled to go tell the others, they were met
- 5:26Speaker 4: on the road by a man. Flustered and confused, they
- 5:30Speaker 4: could barely pay any attention. Greetings, the man said. He
- 5:34Speaker 4: spoke to them with a familiar and gentle tone. They
- 5:38Speaker 4: looked up to him and discovered it was him. He
- 5:42Speaker 4: who was hung bloodied and demolished on the cross stood
- 5:45Speaker 4: before them. No words or expressions could quite capture their elation,
- 5:50Speaker 4: so they simply clung to him. as Jacob once did
- 5:53Speaker 4: on the hill generations ago. They too were trembling with joy, fear,
- 5:58Speaker 4: and confusion. Do not be afraid, nor should you cling
- 6:02Speaker 4: to me too long, Jesus said. Quick, go and tell
- 6:06Speaker 4: my brothers to meet me in Galilee. There they will
- 6:09Speaker 4: see me. The women did as they were told and
- 6:13Speaker 4: immediately ran to the disciples. The two brought word to
- 6:17Speaker 4: Peter and John. Though they doubted, they wasted no time.
- 6:21Speaker 4: fleeing towards the garden where Jesus was buried so they
- 6:24Speaker 4: could see it for themselves. John, the youngest of the disciples,
- 6:29Speaker 4: ran the fastest, determined to see his king once again.
- 6:33Speaker 4: He ran inside, picked up the pieces of cloth that
- 6:37Speaker 4: once wrapped his Messiah, and welled up with tears. The
- 6:41Speaker 4: cloths were lying there alone on the stone, but his
- 6:45Speaker 4: king was gone. As the two Marys had said, the
- 6:48Speaker 4: tomb was empty, and joy and anticipation erupted in both
- 6:52Speaker 4: of them. The darkness over the face of the earth
- 6:56Speaker 4: was lifted, and light was restored to the hearts of
- 6:59Speaker 4: those who followed Jesus. The next chapter of the disciples'
- 7:03Speaker 4: lives would be marked with more wonder and exploits than
- 7:06Speaker 4: their imaginations could ever predict. The king had risen, and
- 7:11Speaker 4: the only thing remaining in the tomb were the sins
- 7:13Speaker 4: of mankind he had put to death on the cross.
- 7:17Speaker 4: God once promised in the Garden of Eden that the
- 7:20Speaker 4: serpent would bruise the heel of a promised son, yet
- 7:24Speaker 4: he would crush his head. Jesus' scars from crucifixion remained.
- 7:29Speaker 4: He was, in fact, bruised by evil. Yet the head
- 7:33Speaker 4: of the serpent, the enemy, and all his exploits were
- 7:37Speaker 4: crushed under the heel of the promised Messiah. On that cross,
- 7:41Speaker 4: the sins of humanity and all that plagued the hearts
- 7:44Speaker 4: of men were crushed. And the Son of God proved
- 7:48Speaker 4: that even death has no power over him, nor would
- 7:52Speaker 4: it have power over all those that followed him after. Amen.
- 8:01Speaker 3: In today's scripture, the dark shadow of grief and fear
- 8:05Speaker 3: hang over the entire world, and none are feeling it
- 8:08Speaker 3: more powerfully than the disciples and those who follow Jesus
- 8:12Speaker 3: to the end. For them, it seemed that all hope
- 8:15Speaker 3: is lost. Though Jesus had told them he would die
- 8:19Speaker 3: and be raised again, it seemed an impossibility at this point.
- 8:23Speaker 3: Two days had already passed, and still Jesus was behind
- 8:26Speaker 3: a heavy stone in a tomb. Those who had orchestrated
- 8:30Speaker 3: this unjust execution and crucifixion had heard about Jesus' claims
- 8:35Speaker 3: that after three days he would rise again, so they
- 8:39Speaker 3: arranged for Jesus' tomb to be guarded by Roman soldiers
- 8:43Speaker 3: so that none of his followers could break in and
- 8:45Speaker 3: steal the body and claim a resurrection. I can only
- 8:49Speaker 3: imagine the sorrow and terror of those who had followed Jesus.
- 8:53Speaker 3: If their master had been killed, surely they would be
- 8:56Speaker 3: in grave danger. But more than that, their dearest friend
- 8:59Speaker 3: and teacher and Messiah, the one that they had trusted
- 9:02Speaker 3: and loved like no one else, was gone. They were
- 9:06Speaker 3: soon to experience in a very real way what Psalm
- 9:09Speaker 3: 30 taught them, that though sorrow may last through the night,
- 9:12Speaker 3: joy comes in the mornings. For on the morning of
- 9:16Speaker 3: the third day, everything was going to change forever. On
- 9:20Speaker 3: that morning, Mary Magdalene and Mary, the mother of James,
- 9:24Speaker 3: made their way to the tomb, bringing spices to anoint
- 9:27Speaker 3: the body of Jesus because they did not expect that
- 9:30Speaker 3: he would actually rise from the dead as he promised
- 9:33Speaker 3: he would. Of course, they had no idea how they
- 9:36Speaker 3: would move the heavy stone that blocked the access to
- 9:38Speaker 3: the body, but they went anyway, desperate, desiring to show
- 9:43Speaker 3: honor to their beloved friend. What a surprise they were
- 9:47Speaker 3: in for. When they got to the place where Jesus
- 9:50Speaker 3: was laid to rest, the large stone had already been
- 9:53Speaker 3: rolled away. When they entered the tomb, they did not
- 9:56Speaker 3: find the Lord's body. No, they encountered two men dressed
- 9:59Speaker 3: in spark white robes, angel beings. They were understandably afraid,
- 10:04Speaker 3: but the angel spoke to them reassuringly, and we hear
- 10:07Speaker 3: their words in Luke 24, verses 6 to 7. He
- 10:11Speaker 3: is not here, but he is risen. Remember how he
- 10:14Speaker 3: told you while he was still in Galilee that the
- 10:17Speaker 3: Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of
- 10:19Speaker 3: sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.
- 10:25Speaker 3: Then they remembered what Jesus had promised them and they
- 10:28Speaker 3: ran to tell the others the good news. The greatest
- 10:31Speaker 3: good news the world has ever heard came out of
- 10:34Speaker 3: an empty tomb in Jerusalem 2,000 years ago. Jesus had
- 10:39Speaker 3: risen just as he said he would. Everything Jesus said,
- 10:44Speaker 3: everything Jesus did, everything about Jesus hinges on this miracle
- 10:49Speaker 3: of the resurrection. If he never rose from the dead,
- 10:52Speaker 3: if the tomb is not empty that day, then Jesus
- 10:56Speaker 3: was just a compelling speaker, a magnetic personality, a religious
- 11:00Speaker 3: teacher that led people astray. But if Jesus did in
- 11:04Speaker 3: fact conquer death and rise from the grave, then he
- 11:06Speaker 3: truly is the Savior of the world, the Son of God.
- 11:09Speaker 3: Perfect God and perfect man, alive forevermore. His death accomplished
- 11:14Speaker 3: what he said it would, the forgiveness of our sins.
- 11:17Speaker 3: And with his resurrection, he removed the sting of death,
- 11:21Speaker 3: eternal separation from God, and made a way for those
- 11:24Speaker 3: who follow him to live forever in the presence of God.
- 11:28Speaker 3: Jesus had said in John 14, 6, I am the
- 11:31Speaker 3: way and the truth and the life, and no one
- 11:34Speaker 3: comes to the Father but by me. Jesus made a way.
- 11:38Speaker 3: and it went through an empty tomb. He rose from
- 11:40Speaker 3: the grave, and now we can trust him with our lives.
- 11:44Speaker 3: And how do we know that he rose from the dead?
- 11:47Speaker 3: Because of the many witnesses that saw him, starting with
- 11:50Speaker 3: these two women, who rushed to tell others that they
- 11:53Speaker 3: had encountered the risen Christ. They embraced him, joy like
- 11:57Speaker 3: they had never known filling their hearts. And they couldn't
- 12:00Speaker 3: wait to tell the disciples the amazing news. When Peter
- 12:03Speaker 3: and John heard, they were doubtful, So they ran to
- 12:06Speaker 3: the tomb and found it empty except for the burial
- 12:09Speaker 3: cloths Jesus had been wrapped in, which were folded neatly
- 12:12Speaker 3: at the tomb. This was not a grave robbery. This
- 12:15Speaker 3: was a resurrection. There are many evidences for the resurrection
- 12:20Speaker 3: of Jesus Christ. We can believe in the resurrection. But
- 12:24Speaker 3: the greatest evidence of all is the changed lives of
- 12:27Speaker 3: the disciples whose world was turned upside down at the
- 12:30Speaker 3: cross but right side up at the resurrection. The one
- 12:34Speaker 3: who had commanded the lame to walk, the sick to
- 12:36Speaker 3: be healed, and the dead to rise had walked right
- 12:39Speaker 3: out of his tomb. He is alive. Christ is alive.
- 12:44Speaker 3: He did not need someone else to command him to rise,
- 12:47Speaker 3: for he has power over sin, death, hell, and the grave.
- 12:52Speaker 3: And through him, because of his cross and resurrection, we
- 12:56Speaker 3: can have the forgiveness of our sins and eternal life.
- 13:00Speaker 3: This is why the gospel is such good news that
- 13:03Speaker 3: the whole world needs to hear. Would you pray with me?
- 13:07Speaker 3: If you've never received Jesus, the living Lord, as your
- 13:10Speaker 3: Savior and your God, you can trust him right now
- 13:13Speaker 3: by simply breathing this prayer. Lord Jesus, I know that
- 13:17Speaker 3: I have sinned and broken your commandments, but I believe
- 13:20Speaker 3: you died to save me, and so I do trust
- 13:23Speaker 3: you as my Lord and Savior. I will follow you
- 13:26Speaker 3: all the days of my life in the power of
- 13:28Speaker 3: your Spirit, And when you come for me, I'll be
- 13:31Speaker 3: ready because I've put my faith and trust in you.
