- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Wednesday.
- 0:15It's the 29th of January, which this year is actually the
- 0:18Chinese New Year. Today, did you realise that on
- 0:22the Chinese New Year, more than 20% of the world's population
- 0:25will be celebrating and more fireworks will be launched and
- 0:29exploded? Is that the right verb set on
- 0:32fire activated? Whatever the right verb is for
- 0:35fireworks, that will happen more today than any other day of the
- 0:39year. Oh, what a crackerjack day.
- 0:41Ha ha ha. See what I did That, and today's
- 0:43also, well, I guess based on the same Lunar New Year, it's also
- 0:48the Korean New Year. So there you go.
- 0:50It is New Year for much of the world, and there will be lots
- 0:54exploding. So if you hear some very strange
- 0:56Kapows and Kabooms in your part of the world, nothing bad is
- 1:01going down. It's just a world of celebration
- 1:04and talking about a world of celebration, well, there's going
- 1:07to not be so much celebration, but more attacking and defending
- 1:11and jostling for land and the throne.
- 1:15Oh yes, that is the Book of Kings as we continue to read
- 1:19through it today, reading through First Kings Chapter 20.
- 1:32About that time, King Ben Haddad of Aram mobilised his army,
- 1:37supported by the Chariots and horses of 32 allied kings.
- 1:42They went to besiege Samaria, the capital of Israel, and
- 1:46launched attacks against it. Ben Haddad sent messengers into
- 1:50the city to relay this message to King Ahab of Israel.
- 1:54This is what Ben Haddad says. Your silver and gold are mine,
- 1:59and so are your wives and the best of your children.
- 2:03All right, my Lord, the king, Israel's king replied, All I
- 2:07have is yours. So Ben Haddad's messengers
- 2:11returned again and said, This is what Ben Haddad says.
- 2:15I have already demanded that you give me your silver, gold, wives
- 2:19and children. But about this time tomorrow I
- 2:22will send my officials to search your palace and the homes of
- 2:26your officials. They will take away everything
- 2:29you consider valuable. Then Ahab summoned all the
- 2:33elders of the land and said to them, Look how this man is
- 2:36stirring up trouble. I already agreed with his demand
- 2:40that I give him my wives and children and silver and gold.
- 2:44Don't give in to any more demands.
- 2:46All the elders and the people advised so Ahab told the
- 2:50messengers from Ben Haddad. Say this to my Lord the king.
- 2:54I will give you everything you asked for the first time, but I
- 2:58cannot accept this last demand of yours.
- 3:01So the messengers returned to Ben Haddad with that response.
- 3:05Then Benedard said this message to Ahab.
- 3:09May the gods strike me and even kill me, if there remains enough
- 3:13dust from Samaria to provide even a handful for each of my
- 3:17soldiers. The king of Israel sent back
- 3:20this answer. A warrior putting on his sword
- 3:23for battle should not boast like a warrior who has already won.
- 3:28Ahab's reply reached Ben Haddad and the other kings.
- 3:31As they were drinking in their tents, prepared to attack.
- 3:35Ben Haddad commanded his officers, so they prepared to
- 3:38attack the city. Then a certain prophet came to
- 3:42see King Ahab of Israel and told him.
- 3:45This is what the Lord says. Do you see all these enemy
- 3:49forces to day? I will hand them all over to
- 3:53you, then you will know that I am the Lord.
- 3:58Ahab asked how will he do it, and the Prophet replied This is
- 4:03what the Lord says, the troops of the provincial commanders
- 4:07will do it. Should we attack first?
- 4:10Ahab asked. Yes, the Prophet answered.
- 4:14So Ahab mustered the troops of the 232 provincial commanders.
- 4:19Then he called out the rest of the Army of Israel, some 7000
- 4:23men. About noontime, as Ben Haddad
- 4:27and the 32 allied kings were still in their tents drinking
- 4:30themselves into a stupor, the troops of the provincial
- 4:33commanders marched out of the city as the first contingent.
- 4:38As they approached, Ben Haddad's scouts reported to him.
- 4:42Some troops are coming from Samaria.
- 4:44Take them alive, Ben Haddad commanded whether they have come
- 4:48for peace or for war, but Ahab's provincial commanders and the
- 4:52entire army had now come out to fight.
- 4:56Each Israelite soldier killed his Aramean opponent, and
- 4:59suddenly the entire Aramean army panicked and fled.
- 5:04The Israelites chased them, but King Ben Haddad and a few of his
- 5:08charioteers escaped on horses. However, the king of Israel
- 5:12destroyed the other horses and Chariots and slaughtered the
- 5:16Arameans. Afterward, the prophet said to
- 5:19King Ahab, get ready for another attack.
- 5:23Begin making plans now, for the king of Iran will come back next
- 5:27spring. After their defeat, Ben Haddad's
- 5:31officers said to him, The Israelite gods are gods of the
- 5:34hills, that is why they won. But we can beat them easily on
- 5:39the plains. Only this time replace the kings
- 5:42with field commanders. Recruit another army like the
- 5:45one you lost. Give us the same number of
- 5:47horses, Chariots and men, and we will fight against them on the
- 5:51plains. There's no doubt that we will
- 5:54beat them. So King Ben Haddad did as they
- 5:57suggested. The following spring, he called
- 6:00up the Aramean army and marched out against Israel, this time at
- 6:05AFAC. Israel then mustered its army,
- 6:08set up supply lines and marched out for battle.
- 6:12But the Israelite army looked like 2 little flocks of goats in
- 6:15comparison to the vast Aramean forces that filled the
- 6:19countryside. Then the man of God went to the
- 6:22king of Israel and said this is what the Lord says.
- 6:26The Arameans have said the Lord is a God of the hills and not of
- 6:30the plains. So I will defeat this vast army
- 6:34for you. Then you will know that I am the
- 6:37Lord. The two armies camped opposite
- 6:41each other for seven days, and on the 7th day the battle began.
- 6:46The Israelites killed 100,000 Aramean foot soldiers in one
- 6:50day. The rest fled into the town of
- 6:53Afac, but the wall fell on them and killed another 27,000 Ben
- 6:59Haddad fled into the town and hid in a secret room.
- 7:03Ben Haddad's officer said to him, Sir, we have heard that the
- 7:07kings of Israel are merciful, so let's humble ourselves by
- 7:11wearing burlap around our waists and putting ropes on our heads
- 7:14and surrender to the king of Israel, and perhaps he will let
- 7:17you live. So they put on burlap and ropes,
- 7:21and they went to the king of Israel and begged your servant.
- 7:25Ben Haddad says, please let me live.
- 7:28The king of Israel responded, Is he still alive?
- 7:32He is my brother. The men took this as a good sign
- 7:37and quickly picked up on his words.
- 7:39Yes, they said. Your brother Ben Haddad, go and
- 7:43get him, the king of Israel told them, and when Ben Haddad
- 7:47arrived, Ahab invited him up into his chariot.
- 7:52Ben Haddad told him. I will give back the towns my
- 7:56father took from your father, and you may establish places of
- 7:59trade in Damascus as my father did in Samaria.
- 8:03Then Ahab said, I will release you under these conditions.
- 8:08So they made a new treaty, and Ben Haddad was set free.
- 8:14Meanwhile the Lord instructed one of the group of prophets to
- 8:17say to another man hit me, but the man refused to hit the
- 8:21prophet. Then the prophet told him,
- 8:24because you have not obeyed the voice of the Lord, a lion will
- 8:28kill you as soon as you leave me.
- 8:30And when he had gone, a lion did attack and kill him.
- 8:35Then the prophet turned to another man and said, Hit me.
- 8:38So he struck the prophet and wounded him.
- 8:42The prophet placed a bandage over his eyes to disguise
- 8:45himself, and then waited beside the road for the king.
- 8:49As the king passed by, the Prophet called out to him, Sir,
- 8:53I was in the thick of battle, and suddenly a man brought me a
- 8:57prisoner. He said, Guard this man, if for
- 9:00any reason he gets away, you will either die or pay a fine of
- 9:0575 lbs of silver. But when I was busy doing
- 9:08something else, the prisoner disappeared.
- 9:11Well, it's your own fault, the king replied, You have brought
- 9:15the judgement on yourself. Then the prophet quickly pulled
- 9:18the bandage from his eyes, and the king of Israel recognised
- 9:22him as one of the prophets. The prophet said to him, This is
- 9:26what the Lord says, because you have spared the man I said must
- 9:30be destroyed now, you must die in his place, and your people
- 9:35will die instead of his people. So the king of Israel went home
- 9:39to Samaria, angry and sullen. Our Lord, you are a great God.
- 9:57You are a God so much bigger than our minds can comprehend,
- 10:02and your plans are so much broader than ours could ever be.
- 10:06Lord, I just pray that you continue to shape us for your
- 10:10service, that we can be a part of your Kingdom, bringing about
- 10:15your reality on earth. And this is the reality where we
- 10:19are loved and forgiven people, people who belong to the God who
- 10:24sent us His only Son, that that you would rescue us from our own
- 10:30sin and from our own brokenness and restore a path between you
- 10:35and us so that we can return to you, Lord, and walk into your
- 10:39embrace and be loved and included in your family.
- 10:44Our Lord, we don't understand why you do this for us, but we
- 10:47are so grateful that you do so. We Live Today as your beloved
- 10:52children. Let that be the flagstone upon
- 10:55which we place our feet, firm foundation from which we can
- 11:00live our lives. Oh, you are a good, good God,
- 11:04and we love you. And we pray all of this in the
- 11:06saving name of Jesus, Amen.
