- 0:00It's most things Kenobi an. Elegant.
- 0:03Podcast. For a more civilized fandom.
- 0:20Hi everyone, welcome to another episode of Most Things Kenobi, a
- 0:23podcast about Obi Wan Kenobi and all things Star Wars.
- 0:26I am your host, Leanne. And I'm your host, Lauren.
- 0:31And this week we are talking about Obi Wan Kenobi in every
- 0:35sense, because we're talking about Obi Wan in the Obi Wan
- 0:38Kenobi series. Honestly, I'm so ready.
- 0:42I feel like we've been away from Obi Wan for a long time,
- 0:45especially since we're doing every other week now.
- 0:47So it's been like months since we've talked about Obi Wan.
- 0:52Too damn long, but we're back. Thank God.
- 1:00Really having to go through and watch clips of the Kenobi series
- 1:03again really, really made me love it all over again.
- 1:06Like, there are some things that I remember loving and then I
- 1:10rewatched them and I was like, oh, this is so good.
- 1:14Why do people think that this is a bad show?
- 1:16I don't understand. They're allowed to.
- 1:19They're allowed. They're entitled to their
- 1:21opinion. They're allowed to dislike it.
- 1:22But like, I really like this show.
- 1:25Yeah, I think maybe because you're just watching clips of
- 1:28it, maybe because they're like I, I've rewatched the whole
- 1:31thing in entirety now maybe two more times, and I like it less
- 1:36each time. I.
- 1:38Like it less each time. I do I like.
- 1:41How interesting. I mean like Ewan is amazing and
- 1:44the stuff that's good I feel like is so fucking good and the
- 1:48stuff that's bad makes my cringe like factor go off real hard
- 1:54and. There are some things that are a
- 1:57little cringy. I will go with you on that,
- 1:59yeah. Yeah, some of the bad guys are
- 2:01not scary. No, no, I mean, when Vader's in
- 2:08the show, who is going to top that, honestly?
- 2:11And like he is like Oh my God the stuff with Vader and Obi
- 2:16Wan. It's just so good.
- 2:18Yes, thank God. And Bale, Oh my God, everything
- 2:24with Bale. And that's so.
- 2:27True, Yeah. I mean, there are some really
- 2:29top notch things and like you said, some some cringy thing.
- 2:34They're of the cringy moments. I can name like 3 off the top of
- 2:38my head, you know. So there are, there are those.
- 2:41It's in there. But I think that unlike some
- 2:45other stuff in Star Wars that might be a little cringy, like
- 2:48there's enough, I feel like counterbalance that's good to
- 2:51make me want to keep watching the show and like come back to
- 2:53the show because the stuff that's.
- 2:54Good. Isn't that kind of All Star Wars
- 2:57or something? Something cringy?
- 3:03Yeah, that's we gotta keep our perspective here.
- 3:06Good point, that's a really good point.
- 3:08Even the original trilogy, there's plenty of stuff where
- 3:10like you might after you've seen it skip skip on by it.
- 3:14Yeah, yeah, it's true. It's true.
- 3:17Well, we're, we're talking about our favorite moments that made
- 3:20us love Obi Wan Kenobi all over again as a Star Wars character,
- 3:24as our favorite character. And we have not talked about it
- 3:28yet. So I'm very curious to see what
- 3:31you say. Because what I tried to do going
- 3:34into this was pick something that I thought we wouldn't each
- 3:38pick so that we would have something to talk about.
- 3:40Because honestly, you and I love Obi Wan pretty equally.
- 3:46Yeah. So I tried to pick something
- 3:49that was not the most obvious thing, but not the most subtle
- 3:53thing either, just just so we wouldn't have any overlap.
- 3:56Interesting because I I did like my favorite in a runner up which
- 3:59I assumed we would have overlap in that.
- 4:02And then I have like quote honorable mentions which are
- 4:05like those little Nuggets where I was like, ah, yes, yeah.
- 4:09I mean I. I, I, I told you, the only thing
- 4:13I said to her in a text last night was I had like a moment.
- 4:16It is my favorite Obi Wan moment in the series, but I can't speak
- 4:20on it for an entire episode. So I chose something else.
- 4:27Now if we were talking about our favorite Vader moments in this
- 4:30episode, Oh my God, I'd be here for a week.
- 4:36I fucking forgot how fabulous all of that was it.
- 4:39Is so good. The stuff on Mapuzzo between
- 4:43them. I watched it like three times.
- 4:45It's so good, that whole interaction, just to make sure,
- 4:52and it does have to do with my moment that I'm going to talk
- 4:54about. In this episode, oh great, you
- 4:56know it made me realize how much I miss Netflix Party when you
- 5:01and I used to watch Clone Wars episodes together.
- 5:04But this is long before we had a podcast.
- 5:06This was just our friendship and we would watch this.
- 5:08Was like 20/17/2018 yeah when this shit existed.
- 5:13It doesn't even exist anymore because corporations got
- 5:15greedier and we would. We would like rewind stuff so
- 5:19much we'd break the interface and have.
- 5:22To have to restart it because we were that extra.
- 5:27It's AI. Guess it's a good thing it
- 5:29doesn't exist for the Kenobi series or we'd have broken the
- 5:31Internet. We would have never got through
- 5:34any of the episodes because we'd just still be rewinding to this
- 5:38day. OK.
- 5:42So do you want to say like your top moment, how do you want to
- 5:46do it well? I'll talk about my favorite
- 5:49moment because I can't talk about it all episodes, so I'll
- 5:52just mention it here. And why like, like, it's not an
- 5:55episode long discussion, really. But honest to God, I rewatched
- 6:00it and I was like, yeah, I, I remember seeing this moment the
- 6:04first time in the series, having an emotional reaction to it and
- 6:08realizing like, This is why I like this man so much.
- 6:11It's very simple. And it's very early in the
- 6:15series. It's when he's working at that
- 6:17meat shop, whatever the fuck that is, and he slices off a
- 6:21piece of meat and wraps it and keeps it for his eopi and he
- 6:25does it after every shift. And this is the thing about Obi
- 6:30Wan Kenobi, right? He cares about creatures, he
- 6:35cares about everyone. He's a kind person, he has a
- 6:39full heart. He takes others into
- 6:41consideration in everything he does.
- 6:44And that is just such a simple detail that they added that I
- 6:47thought was so appropriate because he's taking care of
- 6:51another creature yet again. And we've seen this countless
- 6:54times of him being kind to a creature, an animal or whatever
- 7:01byproduct of the two. He's kind to children, he's kind
- 7:05to other races, other humans, other.
- 7:08He's just a kind hearted human. And I just love that little
- 7:12moment. I thought it was a nice touch.
- 7:14If we're talking about how it relates back to why we like Obi
- 7:16Wan in the 1st place, I think it's a prime example of why I
- 7:19like Obi Wan in the 1st place is because he's just truly kind.
- 7:24I mean, there isn't. He's going to slice you in half
- 7:26if he has to. Absolutely.
- 7:30But, you know, not a cinnamon roll, but he's going to save
- 7:34that little tiny piece of meat and wrap it up and bring it for
- 7:37his little horse because he's a nice guy.
- 7:41Even in the midst of like his own pain and you know, he's in
- 7:45this terrible place mentally, emotionally at this time and he
- 7:49still takes the extra time to care for the animal and be kind
- 7:53to. Yeah, it's just a, it's just a
- 7:55little. No, it's a little thing.
- 7:56It's just a little moment, but I think it's a larger example of
- 8:01the kind of person he is, and I love that.
- 8:05But I also can't speak a whole episode on this one moment.
- 8:08So just I had to. I had to add that though.
- 8:13I like that too. And in that scene, there's
- 8:15actually a lot going on because he takes a little extra for
- 8:18himself. And then there's the the other
- 8:21guy who's not getting paid the full amount and Obi Wan wants to
- 8:24speak up. You see him about to speak up
- 8:27and then he changes his mind and.
- 8:29And we know why. Because this bitch lived through
- 8:32Cadaver. He's not about to make the same
- 8:36mistake again. He learned.
- 8:38I know God. Even though it's in him, he
- 8:41wants to help, he wants to say something, he wants to stick up
- 8:43for the little guy, he wants to stick up for injustice.
- 8:46But sometimes you're in a position where you just can't.
- 8:49It's so symbolic to to see this person who always stood up for
- 8:55somebody to have to crush like they have been crushed so much
- 9:00that their instinct is now to second guess that.
- 9:03Isn't that a shame? That's a shame.
- 9:06It's really telling of where he is mentally and emotionally
- 9:10after what happened on Mustafar. Yeah.
- 9:14I wish like, oh, I really wish they had made more or any
- 9:19references to Clone Wars in in this series because there's so
- 9:23much for the character. Even like, Can you imagine in
- 9:26his little like dream sequence if they had thrown in a flash of
- 9:30live action Zygeria? Godly awesome.
- 9:37Don't tease me with that. Oh my God.
- 9:43It would have been just a snippet and even like they could
- 9:46have thrown in, the lawless people would have lost their
- 9:50fucking minds. Gone ape shit would have been
- 9:54insane. Oh well.
- 9:56And it would have. Been nice things it.
- 10:00Would have been such a nice reward too to people who had
- 10:03watched Clone Wars and like grown up with it to to keep
- 10:07loving Star Wars. I don't know, I just feel like
- 10:10they need to hire us to tie their loose ends together.
- 10:13This is the theme of 2025, I guess.
- 10:19Yeah, someday. Maybe.
- 10:24Well, I I love that moment. It's classic Obi Wan.
- 10:27It's just a little mini mini moment.
- 10:30Do you have a bigger one? Do you have?
- 10:31What is your main? One, my main one is kind of
- 10:34obvious. I think it's it's from the very
- 10:37end when he's fighting Vader and he blasts the basically from the
- 10:41moment he like blasts all the rocks off of himself and jumps
- 10:45up out of the the hole he's fallen into.
- 10:48And then he fights Vader with this kind of renewed focus.
- 10:52Like he was already ready when he said I will do what I must.
- 10:59That was pretty special. Sorry, you're phrasing Yes, but
- 11:12then. The thing I love about the
- 11:16sequence that from there moving forward, it's so Obi Wan in a
- 11:21totally different way than like your example, his ability to
- 11:27read an opponent and use their weaknesses against them
- 11:31instinctively. It's amazing.
- 11:33Like he he knows how Anakin fights and Obi Wan is proficient
- 11:38in most forms he just chooses to use what is it form 3?
- 11:42I can never remember the forms. Whatever expert Ataru or
- 11:46whatever it is, Soreisu, I think that's Obi Wan's thing.
- 11:50But he can fight in Anakin's style as well.
- 11:53So he literally, you see him using Anakin's moves against
- 11:56him. He does the windmill behind the
- 11:57back and all. Yeah, yeah.
- 11:59Yeah, yeah. So yeah, he doesn't he switch
- 12:01hands at one point. Yes, he.
- 12:03Does and he does like a double hand with a reverse grip which I
- 12:07have a theory that Ahsoka learned her reverse grip from
- 12:10Obi Wan. You never see Anakin use it.
- 12:12You do see Obi Wan use it. So that's a.
- 12:14Fantastic theory and A and a smart one.
- 12:17Yeah. Yeah.
- 12:17Realistic, yeah. You've seen it only with Obi Wan
- 12:20when he has either 2 lightsabers or in the Kenobi series he uses
- 12:24a lot of reverse grip you never see Anakin use.
- 12:27Reverse group. No, no, no, no.
- 12:29He's a he's very aggressive. Yeah, like straight on, head on.
- 12:32And the reverse grip is a lot of like the shoto blade is the
- 12:36defense, right? So like it makes sense that Obi
- 12:39Wan would know how to use that. But any who's he also uses all
- 12:44the racks, right? He picks them all up and smashes
- 12:46Anakin. And it kind of like hit me this
- 12:49time watching it that it yes, it's weakening Anakin, but it's
- 12:53also enraging him. And when Anakin is angry, he
- 12:57loses focus. Always.
- 12:59Gets sloppy. He's always been sloppy when he
- 13:01loses focus. Exactly.
- 13:04So he's not only being super powerful, which is incredibly
- 13:08sexy, but he's also using like he's being intelligent, also
- 13:11like using Anakin's weaknesses against him.
- 13:14And it's a. Thing about Obi Wan is his
- 13:16intelligence. That is.
- 13:18Pretty sexy. It's admirable.
- 13:20Yeah. It's if you were an onlooker, an
- 13:23innocent bystander, and you didn't know any better, you
- 13:26would know that this guy is intelligent by the way that he
- 13:29#1 sizes up an opponent, opponent #2 how he strategizes
- 13:33his way through the fight. I mean, conserving energy where
- 13:37is necessary, deflecting, doing the defensive where it's
- 13:41necessary, offensive where necessary.
- 13:43And you would think this guy is a seasoned warrior.
- 13:47And his intelligence is what makes him very threatening
- 13:52because intelligent people, intelligent fighters will say
- 13:56are not in your face. Anakin style was in your face.
- 14:00He's tall, he's broad, he has the eye, you know, the eye
- 14:03contact. He never backed down.
- 14:06He's right up in it in your face.
- 14:07And he will overpower you. But then the person who's more
- 14:10subtle and uses a more intelligent way of fighting,
- 14:14it's less predictable and you can't read them as well as they
- 14:18can read you. And I find that to be it's like
- 14:21the Thrawn effect. Thrawn is always thinking and
- 14:26he's really intelligent and he's scary as fuck because of it.
- 14:29But he also has like that imposing his poise is scary.
- 14:32Just his. Reserve is so, so reserved that
- 14:37it's terrifying. But you know, it's in the same
- 14:39line as like Obi Wan. He's intelligent and you can't,
- 14:42you can't fuck with that because it's just not possible.
- 14:46But he will fuck with you and that's awesome.
- 14:49He's hot. It's so cool too because he he's
- 14:52also getting like his feet knocked out from under him at
- 14:55the beginning of the fight. Vader hits him with with racks
- 14:59also and it's a really good example of how Obi Wan doesn't
- 15:03let his emotions completely conquer him.
- 15:06And that's what the whole show is about right?
- 15:08Because his emotions have overwhelmed him.
- 15:11He is defeated by it and then the ending is him releasing
- 15:15himself from that. But that that's also condensed
- 15:18down in that fight because he does a great job in the
- 15:21beginning of the fight. He's not getting overwhelmed.
- 15:23And then he literally gets crushed with rocks.
- 15:26You know, like we've, we've talked about when we did our
- 15:29whole episode just about this fight.
- 15:31It's the symbol of him literally being crushed under the weight
- 15:36of everything. Yes.
- 15:39And even in that moment, even though he's like literally under
- 15:43a pile of boulders, it doesn't consume him.
- 15:47He still overcomes it, just as he overcomes his emotion.
- 15:51Not that he's not emotional, but he doesn't let it get in the way
- 15:54of what needs to be done, which is just.
- 15:57If only I could be that way. I was just sitting here thinking
- 16:00like, damn it, he's a good example of what I wish I could
- 16:02do every single day and fail miserably at.
- 16:08Controlling your emotions is really hard.
- 16:10Yeah, it is. It's really hard, and that's the
- 16:13sign of an enlightened person is someone who can.
- 16:17Yeah damn Obi Wan is so good I. Know I love him so much.
- 16:24I love him, God. Did you have a runner up?
- 16:29Oh yeah, so honest to God, I could talk for like years on end
- 16:33about his very last scene with Leia where he talks about her
- 16:37mom and dad. Yes, Oh my God.
- 16:39It goes back to the kindness factor he levels with her,
- 16:42literally down to her level and gives her the truth about her
- 16:47parents, you know, in a way that she can handle.
- 16:51But while I could, that is obviously one of my favorite
- 16:54moments, but I'm going to go with something a little
- 16:57different. It made me real.
- 16:59I really fucking admire Obi Wan Kenobi.
- 17:03So my main moment is when they're on.
- 17:07OK, so him and the woman and Leia, who's what's her
- 17:11character's name again? Tala.
- 17:13Tala. I was going to say not that, but
- 17:16so it's it's him, Tala and Leia and they're hiding and Vader is
- 17:23going to come down the street. Right.
- 17:25Fucking iconic. It's so fucking iconic.
- 17:30Here's why I like this scene and why I like Obi Wan Kenobi in a
- 17:34larger sense. But he's obviously protecting
- 17:36Leia and Tala to an extent. He tells them to get going, like
- 17:39get out of here, go, because he knows what the fuck's about to
- 17:42happen. And I think earlier in this
- 17:45episode, it was revealed to him that Anakin was alive.
- 17:48And he's putting it together right, That Anakin is the guy in
- 17:53the suit and he's going to get his first fucking glimpse of
- 17:58what used to be his best friend. And of course this like the
- 18:02runway is set for for the diva to come walking down in his Cape
- 18:05and his boots, not Chanel, but but Dolce and Gabbana.
- 18:10And here he comes. The whole thing is so fucking
- 18:14frightening. And you have Vader out in the
- 18:17open and you have Obi Wan enclosed, and there's that bar
- 18:20of light over his eyes because he's looking out through the
- 18:23slats of whatever that is. Yeah, like in a prison.
- 18:27Yes, yes. And Vader knows he's there.
- 18:31He just doesn't know where. And Vader uses that kindness I
- 18:36spoke about to draw him out. He starts killing innocent
- 18:40people for no reason, horrifically snapping necks,
- 18:44dragging him out of the the the windows, dragging a woman down
- 18:48the street, crying. That's me just pulling innocent
- 18:51people out because he knows that's going to drive Obi Wan
- 18:54Kenobi nuts. Yeah.
- 18:56And it kind of works because he's got to draw Vader away from
- 19:01Tala and and Leia at the same time, and he knows what's
- 19:05happening. So if he goes out, maybe Vader
- 19:06will stop. They sense each other and it's
- 19:09the the Vader snap head turn. Yeah, the like a horror film
- 19:13moment. Yes, they love every second of
- 19:16that. And it's all the sound goes out
- 19:18and you know, they, they sense each other.
- 19:20During this moment, there's a lot of emphasis on Ewan's face,
- 19:24his eyes, his the fear. I mean, Ewan does a fantastic
- 19:28job. He can't believe what he sees.
- 19:30And he he's fascinated by what he sees because in his head, you
- 19:34know, he's putting it together like, I can't.
- 19:36This used to be. And This is why I love Obi Wan.
- 19:39For fucking years, he was that man's best friend.
- 19:42They were like brothers. They, they shared so many things
- 19:46together. Think of it like your best
- 19:50friend turns into the epitome of darkness.
- 19:53Head to toe in black stands for everything that he used to fight
- 19:59against. The complete opposite in in
- 20:02visual and in in like internal. Obi Wan is afraid.
- 20:08There has to be something in his brain thinking like this can't
- 20:10be real. How can this how like
- 20:13physically, how did he live through this?
- 20:16How did it come to this to even be able to move past that alone?
- 20:22And this is early on in the series before he really connects
- 20:25with the force in full. He's not ready yet.
- 20:28And that's the point of their fight scene is that it answers
- 20:31the question, why does Vader say in Episode 4, you know, when we
- 20:36last met, I was, but you know, all this stuff and this, that
- 20:40and the other thing, the whole, the whole thing.
- 20:42And then, you know, he gets drawn through broken fire glass.
- 20:45But that's besides the point. The point is psychologically,
- 20:50Obi Wan is not prepared to face a person who has completely
- 20:55changed so much. And yet he does.
- 20:57He's not mentally there yet, but he has to because of Leia and
- 21:03Tala. Yeah.
- 21:05This is a man who continuously faces his fears, mentally,
- 21:10physically, everything in between, and does it out of the
- 21:14love of someone else. Leia.
- 21:17He does it out of facing shit from his past.
- 21:21His failures. He thinks that are his failures.
- 21:24This is the embodiment of darkness and what's wrong with
- 21:27the Galaxy. And it used to be his best
- 21:28friend. Shit went down on Mustafar.
- 21:31Yeah. And I just respect the fucking
- 21:34hell out of Obi Wan because do you know how many times I would
- 21:36say I'm not No, I'm not ready, I'll catch you next time.
- 21:40I tiptoe away. I would tiptoe the fuck away.
- 21:44But he does it anyway. And he continually does this and
- 21:48then it ends up this giant beautiful scene between him and
- 21:53Anakin in the fight that you described it we described in our
- 21:56episode. But and then he apologizes for
- 21:59everything that happened. But in that moment, he's so
- 22:03scared and he's so Can you imagine being that fucking
- 22:06confused? Oh.
- 22:07My God, he's got a lot going on there.
- 22:11There's so much that is revealed to him in so little time.
- 22:15Andy has Leia, Andy has Talla, and he's got a street full of
- 22:18people that are just dying left and right because Anakin wants
- 22:20to draw him out. Do you know the overwhelming
- 22:23amount of sensations? Seriously.
- 22:27Info overload. It would paralyze some people.
- 22:30It would destroy some people. But he just walks right out and
- 22:34faces it. I just respect the hell out of
- 22:36him. And I love that about Obo.
- 22:37I always have. We've talked about this so many
- 22:40times, about how in the face of like the most horrific shit, he
- 22:45still finds a way to rise to the occasion.
- 22:48And it's the same like even in Phantom Menace he makes promise
- 22:53to Qui Gon and protects Anakin. Yeah, yeah.
- 22:56Just like in this, he is protecting Anakin's daughter
- 22:59from Anakin. That's insane.
- 23:01That's the that's the other thing.
- 23:03He has all this knowledge that none of no one else does.
- 23:06Yeah. You know, not even Anakin.
- 23:07Anakin doesn't know he has a daughter.
- 23:09Right. You're right.
- 23:10Yeah, it's. Fucking crazy.
- 23:12And and the scenes before this. So the scenes leading up to it,
- 23:15he's literally on his knees in a prayer position asking Qui Gon
- 23:20for help because he knows what he has to do.
- 23:21He doesn't want to do it. He's afraid to do it.
- 23:23How how many of us have faced something that we have to do but
- 23:28we're deathly afraid of, and we ask for help or guidance or give
- 23:32me the courage to just do this. I just can't imagine.
- 23:35There's so much history there, and I just give him so much
- 23:39respect. And I just think it was so well
- 23:42done in that instance where they focus on his eyes because a lot
- 23:45of it is seeing him for the first time, understanding that
- 23:49this man in black, this machine is the remnants of your best
- 23:55friend in the last 30-40 years of your life.
- 23:59Yeah, it's fucked up, man. It's too.
- 24:00It's too much, but it's beautiful.
- 24:03It's beautiful because that's Star Wars.
- 24:06Luke has to do it. Luke is exactly the same, is in
- 24:10the same position. Even actually, when Obi Wan is
- 24:13on his knees asking for help and reliving things, he's hearing
- 24:17the voice of Yoda, which is not a coincidence.
- 24:20There's just a lot. There's a lot.
- 24:22It's Star Wars. It's so I just.
- 24:29Really appreciate everyone's performance in all of that.
- 24:33Yes, and like how they take it seriously.
- 24:38I, I, I really enjoyed this show in a way that I didn't enjoy the
- 24:43prequels in a sense because, and this is really a George Lucas
- 24:47thing. He wants to keep it like a
- 24:49Saturday afternoon movie. So even in well, I was in A New
- 24:54Hope when Luke comes back and finds his family burned to a
- 24:58crisp on the ground. Mark Hamill wanted to play it
- 25:01realistically, like he was like, I think I'd be pretty upset.
- 25:04And George Lucas is like, I don't want you to cry.
- 25:06Like I don't want it to get too emotional.
- 25:09We need to stay in like fairy land a little bit.
- 25:11This show really allowed you in to kind of dive into the real
- 25:16pain. Whereas you know, in Revenge of
- 25:20the Sith, we get it right in the end of their, you know, when he
- 25:24cuts his legs off and leaves him there to die and you get the you
- 25:27were my brother Anakin like that, like that is it.
- 25:30And I think that's kind of why it hit so hard because it was
- 25:32like, wow, we've never seen emotion like this out of Homa,
- 25:36said Ewan McGregor. I meant Obi Wan Kobe.
- 25:39They just like melted in my mind.
- 25:42Exactly. But to get to then let a
- 25:47character who's always kind of cracking jokes and being snarky
- 25:51and not taking, I mean, he takes it seriously.
- 25:53It's not like he's not taking it seriously, but.
- 25:55Like there's a person in there who's always ready with the
- 25:58snark. That's his personality.
- 26:00Yeah, but he shelves it when he needs to and then puts it out at
- 26:03any given time. Like this actually segues really
- 26:06nicely into my my runner up because.
- 26:08Yeah. What is it?
- 26:10Well, so much of Obi Wan is repressing real heavy dark
- 26:17things. I mean, like we said, he rises
- 26:20to the occasion and like kind of moves beyond the Super emotional
- 26:23stuff in a way that's frighteningly efficient
- 26:25sometimes. The Lawless.
- 26:29Yes, I was thinking that too. You know, Vader's pulling people
- 26:33out and snapping necks and stuff.
- 26:34That's not that had to have raised some kind of emotional.
- 26:38Yeah. Trauma from Satine being held
- 26:41there and then just boop. Done.
- 26:43Yeah. Oh my gosh, I never even put
- 26:45that together. You're so right.
- 26:46That was. Well, it's not like we got it in
- 26:48the show, but in in. All we.
- 26:50Know that this has already happened to him.
- 26:53Poor woman. Right.
- 26:54Right in front of him. Anywho.
- 26:56Anywho, your your your moment. So that's why I love this scene
- 27:00between Obi Wan and Leia in the back of the truck which is back
- 27:04of the. Truck, yes.
- 27:06Probably no surprise to anybody that that's like on my list
- 27:09because it is one of my favorite moments of Obi Wan ever I think.
- 27:14It's so good. It's very good.
- 27:16Well done all over I. Think it's so special because he
- 27:20is so human in that scene and we're so used to seeing the hero
- 27:26or like we said, the general who's kind of snarky and we know
- 27:31he can fight really well and takes everything very seriously.
- 27:34But that moment is just a man talking to his best friend's
- 27:39daughter, like trying to connect with her and comfort her in a
- 27:44way that we not even with like Pneuma, because even then he was
- 27:48still true Ben back, back to the fight, fellas.
- 27:52Like it was never getting too connected to anybody.
- 27:55He always kind of kept the teen at arm's length.
- 27:57He was very rarely gentle with Anakin even.
- 28:03And that's why I love this moment, because he turns to her
- 28:06and then the cinematography is very close.
- 28:09It's just the close-ups of their faces, which implies like
- 28:11intimacy in in, not in like a romantic way.
- 28:14It means like emotional intimacy between people.
- 28:17It's very important for her to ask these questions and put him
- 28:21on the spot in a way, and for him to respond calmly and kindly
- 28:25and then make reference to his parents and his brother and a
- 28:32past that he has never spoken of ever under any circumstances
- 28:37before, I thought was really interesting and well.
- 28:41It's beautiful because he felt safe with her already.
- 28:43It felt like to me it was the first time seeing the real Obi
- 28:48Wan, you know what I mean? Like he is a general and a Jedi
- 28:53and a diplomat and on the hollow net or whatever is a hero of the
- 28:57Galaxy. This was like just Obi Wan.
- 29:02This was just like a man and and I really liked it because I like
- 29:06craved this the whole time during Clone wars.
- 29:10I love the hero. But the thing I think that,
- 29:13like, really makes good storytelling is when you kind of
- 29:16crack that every now and then and you see, oh, he's a human
- 29:20being also. He's a good human being, damn.
- 29:25He is, but to see someone who's strong have vulnerability, I
- 29:30think it's important for the audience because it's like a
- 29:33reflection of ourselves that it's not necessarily
- 29:37unattainable to be a strong person, even though we might be
- 29:41feeling weak or vulnerable. It's like, well, your hero also
- 29:44have moments where they're weak and vulnerable.
- 29:47I think it's it's just a really beautiful scene.
- 29:49It's one of my favorites. It's so beautifully acted by the
- 29:52two actors and it's. Insane how good it is with such
- 29:56a young actress too. Yeah, and and a seasoned vet
- 30:00like Ewan, I mean, it's just. Yeah.
- 30:03It's very beautiful. Again, like I think Ewan has
- 30:06matured so much as an actor. When he was younger he was good,
- 30:09but I sometimes kind of felt like I could see through it a
- 30:12little bit. And now basically in the last 10
- 30:16years, he's done projects where he took risks in ways he didn't
- 30:20when he was younger. You know, he was always like
- 30:22naked and everything when he was younger and like a. 100%.
- 30:27Really put himself out there, like literally.
- 30:30And now I feel like he takes more emotional risks now where
- 30:34you see, I don't even know how to describe it.
- 30:37It's more existential because before, like even in like young
- 30:41Adam, which I cannot bear to watch, that movie is so
- 30:43upsetting. Oh my.
- 30:43God, I know, I know. It's it's like, yeah, OK, you're
- 30:47being gritty, but like, EW. It's so true.
- 30:53Like, I never want to see that again.
- 30:56And the stuff he's made more recently, it's like, wow, I
- 31:00would never have expected you to make a movie like that.
- 31:02It's very interesting. Though.
- 31:04Yeah, I love it. Yeah.
- 31:06And I, and to have this is my desire always to bring that
- 31:10sophistication into Star Wars and let the actors really act
- 31:16and not be hammy because it's just like, it adds so much to it
- 31:22when you allow them to do what they do best.
- 31:25And that's. I always feel that.
- 31:28And the last time I saw, like Returning the Jedi on the big
- 31:30screen, even though Mark Hamill is having to ham it up, there
- 31:35are moments where he's really acting the shit out of a scene.
- 31:39And to see it on the big screen, it was like, I had no idea he
- 31:43was actually crying. In that last scene with Vader,
- 31:46when Vader dies on the floor, you can't see it on the TV.
- 31:50On the big screen, you can see it.
- 31:51I was just like, holy shit. That's why that seems so good.
- 31:56And it's underplayed. It's very subtle.
- 31:59He never overacted it. And that's what Ewan does so
- 32:02beautifully as well. It's not hammy, it's perfect.
- 32:07No ham involved in this. It's a ham sandwich.
- 32:13I I agree with everything you just said.
- 32:16I'm sitting over here shaking my head the whole time trying not
- 32:18to interrupt you with my yeah. That's how I felt with with your
- 32:25last one day I was just like nodding really hard.
- 32:30He's a really great character. This is a really great show full
- 32:33of great moments. Yeah.
- 32:35And we could do this for another 4 hours probably, no problem.
- 32:42But we're going to revisit more favorite Obi Wan moments.
- 32:45We're just going to randomly pick stuff in the future, like
- 32:48from this episode of Clone Wars or this or this part of this
- 32:52Return of the Jedi or I'm not Revenge of the Sith, is what I
- 32:55meant to say, But whatever. Yeah, I do.
- 32:59I have to say too. I have like some little
- 33:02honorable mentions and let's go when Leia falls off the roof.
- 33:06Oh yeah. I love that scene so much.
- 33:08Oh my God, Because they do this hyper close up, right?
- 33:12Which is they do they only use that when it's supposed to be
- 33:15super intense emotion, right? And he's panicking, like legit
- 33:19panicking. They close up on his eyes and he
- 33:22they're like looking everywhere and he doesn't know what to do.
- 33:24And he's like, Oh my God, just hold on.
- 33:26And he's looking for someone else to help.
- 33:28And you never see Obi Wan Kenobi do that ever.
- 33:34I loved it so much. And then he, it forces him like
- 33:38you're the only one. You're the only one there.
- 33:40You have to do it and he has to do it.
- 33:42Rises to the occasion. And it's so fucking satisfying.
- 33:45My God it. Is it is really satisfying.
- 33:50I think it's fantastic that Leia is the one that that brought it
- 33:53out of him. I think that is extremely on
- 33:56point for if he's going to do it, it's going to be for one of
- 34:00those kids. Yeah, and I love that it was for
- 34:03her. I I know some people didn't like
- 34:05that it was Leia. I loved that they brought Leia
- 34:08into the story because I think they did it well.
- 34:10They really I do too. And Vivian is, she was so great
- 34:14and I have no complaints. 00. Then I also just really love
- 34:21anytime he punches someone. Yes, we've been over this
- 34:26before. It's so great.
- 34:29It really is. We need more physical force.
- 34:32Seriously, like I love when you know, we've talked about how hot
- 34:35it is when Jedi just use the force, but also when Obi Wan who
- 34:38can use the force, chooses to use his fists.
- 34:42I'm just ready to see Obi Wan bitch slap someone like straight
- 34:45up backhand. I would love to see that.
- 34:49And I honestly think it's deserving of I can't even say
- 34:54it. I feel like if Obi Wan were to
- 34:59ever backhand somebody, it would be his buddy there with the
- 35:04tattoo, the thing over his nose. The Jedi Quinlan.
- 35:12He would backhand Quinlan. Yeah, yeah.
- 35:17Or mall just to get a rise out of him.
- 35:19Oh, that would be great, yeah. That would be cruel.
- 35:25Did you have any other honorable mentions?
- 35:27Just basically like the well, especially the first time he
- 35:31turns his lightsaber on. Oh, yeah.
- 35:33Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, that is like, we've been
- 35:35waiting for him for so long and he immediately has that like
- 35:38powerful stance, even though he's like not ready to fight
- 35:41that muscle. Memories still there and
- 35:44anything in the Inquisitor Fortress when he's like slowly
- 35:46getting his mojo back. It was just like I.
- 35:49Actually, I actually wanted to mention the Inquisitor Fortress.
- 35:53Yep. That was that.
- 35:54There's a lot of good that went on in there.
- 35:56Yeah, yeah. And, and not only that, he's in
- 35:58a hallway. He's got like this odd essence
- 36:01of Luke in the hallway and Ray in the hallway.
- 36:04There's always like the hallway in Star Wars, you know, there's
- 36:08that moment. Yeah.
- 36:10There's a lot of good shit. And distracting the guards.
- 36:13It's very. And then there's that beautiful
- 36:14moment, even with him and Leia, where it's a reflection of
- 36:18Empire Strikes Back, where she's lit all red and he says I know
- 36:23to her. Just like Honda, it's true.
- 36:25Great scene. It's true.
- 36:27Oh, my. Good.
- 36:29Yeah. I could go on and on.
- 36:30We can stop here. But like, yeah.
- 36:34I guess it comes without saying we do love Obi Wan Kenobi, yeah.
- 36:38Can't help it. I mean comes with a name.
- 36:41Yeah. All right, our question for you
- 36:49this week is obviously, what is your favorite Obi Wan Kenobi
- 36:53moment in the Kenobi series? If you had to pick just one, you
- 36:57can say a couple. But, you know, if you had to
- 36:59narrow it down to one, please let us know because we're
- 37:02curious, as always. And you know us, we're bad at
- 37:05narrowing things down to. Always.
- 37:07Yeah, we always have runner ups and stuff.
- 37:12All right, join us back for our next episode.
- 37:14We have something very different that we're going to talk about,
- 37:17and Leanne is being very kind to humor me with this.
- 37:23We're going to talk about something called the New
- 37:25Hollywood movement and how Star Wars does and doesn't fit into
- 37:29that. It was a cinematic period in
- 37:32history from the late or the mid 1960s to the 1980s.
- 37:36It was a specific kind of cinema happening at that time.
- 37:40And we're just gonna discuss how original Star Wars, A New Hope
- 37:45in particular, does and doesn't fit into that genre.
- 37:48So join us back next time for that.
