- 0:00Today's lesson we're going to be focusing on Amaniha.
- 0:04This particular city is fascinating in the whole mission
- 0:09of Alma the Younger. Remember, he gave up the
- 0:11judgment seat. He's no longer the chief judge,
- 0:14and he's gone on this mission to try to increase the the level of
- 0:19righteousness among the Nephites.
- 0:20So you'll notice that back in chapters five and six, he
- 0:24started at the center of the land.
- 0:27He began in Zarahemla. Then in seven he went out to
- 0:31Gideon and had a great experience with the people in
- 0:34Gideon. Then he came home, and in the
- 0:36beginning of chapter 8 it tells you that he returned in verse
- 0:39one to his own houses ere hemla to rest himself from the
- 0:43laborers which he had performed. He's getting some downtime, some
- 0:47relaxation, and then in chapter 8, he begins again in verse
- 0:52four, he began to teach the people in the land of Milek
- 0:55according to the holy order of God by which he had been called.
- 1:00Check this out. You get chapter 8 verse, you
- 1:04know, three through 6, he's in Milek and look at the people.
- 1:10Verse five, it came to pass that the people came to him
- 1:13throughout all the borders of the land, which was by the
- 1:15wilderness side, because we're West of the river Sidon out on
- 1:19the West by the borders of the wilderness.
- 1:21And they were baptized throughout all the land.
- 1:25So that when he had finished his work at Melech, he departed
- 1:28thence and travelled 3 days journey on the north of the land
- 1:31of Melech and came to the city which is called Amaniah.
- 1:34Now look at this. So you get chapter 8 where he
- 1:37leaves Melech in verse six comes to Amaniah and you're going to
- 1:41be in Ammaniah all the way through chapter 15.
- 1:45That's a lot of column space. That's a lot of scripture pages
- 1:49for for the city of Ammaniah. Notice this pattern.
- 1:53Mormon looking down the quarter of time says, what do they need?
- 1:58What is going to be the most beneficial to them in the last
- 2:01in in the latter days? What happens here, here, here or
- 2:05here and in what proportions? You'll notice what we got the
- 2:09vast majority of of Mormons editing effort for it's what
- 2:15happened in Ammaniah. You got 3-4 verses Max in Milek
- 2:23where largely the people are not members of the church.
- 2:28So these they're they're not in the in the gospel, but they come
- 2:33in huge, huge numbers to be baptized.
- 2:37And we're sitting here saying, come on Mormon, there's great
- 2:40success happening in Milek and you're not giving us any of
- 2:43those details. I'm thinking Mormon saw our day
- 2:46and said, you people in the latter days, you need to know
- 2:50what Alma had to go through and what Amulek had to go through in
- 2:55ammonia as opposed to just celebrate the wonderful things
- 2:58that happened in Milek. Think about this.
- 3:00What if you were serving a full time mission for the church and
- 3:04there was a particular area in your mission that was
- 3:07notoriously bad. Nobody wanted to serve there.
- 3:10And when anybody got assigned to serve there, it was like, Oh no,
- 3:14kiss of death, poor you, good luck.
- 3:18Look at chapter 8, verse nine. What if you got a description of
- 3:22a particular area that looked like this?
- 3:24Now Satan had gotten great holds upon the hearts of the people of
- 3:27the city of fill in the blank with whatever name, in this
- 3:30case, Amanihah. Therefore they would not hearken
- 3:33unto the words of Elma. You're saying to yourself, well
- 3:36then there's nothing I can do. Why waste my time here?
- 3:39Because Satan has such a great hold.
- 3:41Notice you've got all of this awful description of how their
- 3:45hearts are bound by Satan. So it's it's a pretty bad
- 3:50outlook on the people. And then notice the very next
- 3:53word in verse 10. Never the less, which we've
- 3:59talked about before, always the greater put more emphasis over
- 4:03here, de emphasize, not de emphasize, but put the greater
- 4:07emphasis here in this cause counter effect relationship.
- 4:11So it's a rough spot to serve. But in spite of that, we're
- 4:16going to put greater emphasis on what comes here.
- 4:19Every mission president the world over would pray for all of
- 4:23their missionaries to be like verse 10.
- 4:27Nevertheless, Alma labored much in the Spirit, wrestling with
- 4:31God in mighty prayer that he would pour out his Spirit upon
- 4:35the people who were in the city, that he would also grant that he
- 4:38might baptize them under repentance.
- 4:40I love that faithful approach. And you're thinking, Oh good,
- 4:43this is great. There's only one problem.
- 4:46Look at the first word of verse 11.
- 4:48In spite of a missionary's best efforts, or a leader's best
- 4:53efforts, or a mom or a dad, their best efforts, there's
- 4:58still this thing called agency. And verse 11 is all about agency
- 5:01being used in the wrong direction.
- 5:03Nevertheless, the people in Ammaniah had hardened their
- 5:07hearts, saying unto him, Behold, we know that thou art Elma, and
- 5:10you're just the high priest. You're no longer our chief
- 5:12judge. You have no authority over us,
- 5:14so we're not going to listen to you.
- 5:15So you saw this. There's a really rough place.
- 5:19Nevertheless, Alma worked really hard.
- 5:21He, he put his whole soul into this and poured his heart out to
- 5:23God. Nevertheless, the people
- 5:25rejected him anyway. I teach many, many students at
- 5:29BYU every year and occasionally I'll I'll find out from some of
- 5:34them who have returned from missions that they feel like
- 5:38they were a failure on the mission because they'll say
- 5:41things like I, I didn't baptize anyone or I only baptized and
- 5:45then they'll give me some really low number and say it.
- 5:48I don't feel like I accomplished what I really should have been
- 5:51able to accomplish in that time. I love the fact that here in
- 5:55verse 910 and 11, God is teaching a principle that you
- 5:59cannot control people's agency and you can't base your success
- 6:05on how other people choose to use their agency.
- 6:09Alma did everything he could and the people still chose to reject
- 6:13him. At which point look at verse 13.
- 6:17Now when the people had said this and withstood all His
- 6:20words, and not just withstood him, look at this next part, and
- 6:23reviled him and spit upon him, and caused that he should be
- 6:28cast out of their city, he departed thence and took his
- 6:31journey towards the city which was called Aaron.
- 6:35Can you picture the body language?
- 6:37By the way, he's been fasting many days because nobody's
- 6:39feeding him. Can you picture the physical
- 6:41appearance of Alma, the spiritual rejection and
- 6:46dejection as he's spit upon, reviled, kicked out of the city,
- 6:50as he now leaves and starts walking away, this weighed down
- 6:55soul. Now look at verse 14.
- 6:58It came to pass that while he was journeying thither, being
- 7:02weighed down with sorrow, wading through much tribulation and
- 7:05anguish of soul because of the wickedness of the people who
- 7:08were in the city of Amanihaha. It came to pass that while Alma
- 7:12was thus weighed down with sorrow, behold, an Angel of the
- 7:15Lord appeared unto him, saying, Blessed art thou Alma, therefore
- 7:21lift up thy head and rejoice. So here he is weighed down, and
- 7:26he's in the depths of of prophetic despair, having been
- 7:30totally rejected in Ammanihah. And then the Angel comes and
- 7:33says, lift up your head and rejoice.
- 7:36It's OK. You've been faithful in keeping
- 7:40the commandments. You did everything you could.
- 7:43And then the Angel introduces himself to him in a different
- 7:46way. He says, remember, Do you
- 7:48Remember Me? We're old friends, Elma.
- 7:50I'm the one who was sent to turn you from that path of wickedness
- 7:56when you were off with the four sons of Mosiah many years ago.
- 8:00Now I get to come to you again. Isn't this interesting, The
- 8:03contrast? The first time this Angel came
- 8:05to Alma, he's puffed up. He's at the height of his
- 8:09popularity among the people. He everything that he's doing,
- 8:13the world is applauding and he's he's on cloud nine.
- 8:17And the Angel comes and bursts that bubble and brings him down
- 8:22into the depths of humility and three days of the pains of a
- 8:26damned soul using his own words are are what follows.
- 8:31Now you get the opposite. Now Alma is in the depths of
- 8:37despair. He's downtrodden.
- 8:40He's more than humble. And now the Angel comes.
- 8:43Lift up your head. Rejoice.
- 8:46He lifts him up. There's a phrase in the
- 8:48Scriptures and a concept in the Scriptures that repeats itself
- 8:51in in a variety of ways, that the lofty shall be brought down
- 8:57and made low, and the valleys shall be lifted up.
- 9:00The low shall be exalted, he who exalteth himself shall be abased
- 9:06and he who humbleth himself shall be exalted.
- 9:09It comes in a variety of ways throughout the Scriptures.
- 9:12And here you get a a perfect example of this reunion between
- 9:17Alma and this particular Angel. And by the way, we always put
- 9:20the emphasis, don't we, on wow, isn't that amazing?
- 9:24Alma got to see an Angel. I, I have to believe that that
- 9:29in heaven and in the spirit world that it's equally as
- 9:34amazing for these angels to get to be the one to have the
- 9:39assignment or or get the opportunity, the calling to go
- 9:43down and be that heavenly messenger for people.
- 9:46Can you imagine this particular Angel being told you get to be
- 9:50Alma the Younger's tutor? That's remarkable.
- 9:53Can you picture Angel Moroni? You get to be the one to be the
- 9:57personal tutor of Joseph Smith Junior profit and serve the Lord
- 10:02in the restoration the dispensation of the fullness of
- 10:05times. I personally think Marone, I was
- 10:08just as excited on that occasion as as was Joseph in this in this
- 10:13incredible coming together experience and and you get it
- 10:17here as well. Look at the command in verse 16.
- 10:21Behold, I am sent to command thee that thou return to the
- 10:25city of Amaniah and preach again unto the people of the city.
- 10:28Yeah, preach unto them. Yeah, say unto them, except they
- 10:30repent. The Lord God will destroy them.
- 10:33Let's play shoulder Angel and shoulder devil for a minute.
- 10:40How hard would it be for a devil to to put in some pretty
- 10:44discouraging words into Alma's mind and into his heart right
- 10:48now? You've just been rejected,
- 10:50reviled, spit upon, kicked out. And now an Angel says, oh, go
- 10:56back into the city and don't go into the city and declare glad
- 10:58Titans of great joy go back in and tell them unless they
- 11:01repent, they are going to be utterly destroyed.
- 11:04Can you imagine the the thoughts that might have crossed Alma's
- 11:10mind placed there by the by the devil to say, oh, yeah, that's
- 11:17going to be effective. That's going to be popular.
- 11:19You're going to get a lot of followers now, Alma.
- 11:21They're really going to love you.
- 11:23Or really, why would the Lord send you back in there, Alma?
- 11:28Weren't you already there? Didn't you already tell them
- 11:30that if they didn't repent, they were going to be destroyed?
- 11:32Why would God want you to go again?
- 11:34You can see all of these discouraging things that could
- 11:39be placed in a in a person's mind.
- 11:41Now let's play the Angel for a moment.
- 11:45Give me one good reason why Alma should go back into Emaniah.
- 11:50All you need is one. It's because God commanded it.
- 11:54Skip down to verse 18. Now it came to pass that after
- 11:59Alma had received his message from the Angel Lord, he returned
- 12:03speedily to the land of Amaniah. And he entered the city by
- 12:07another way, by the way, which is on the South of the city.
- 12:09He's been fasting many days. He's exhausted.
- 12:11He's been rejected. The Angel comes and says, now go
- 12:14back in and preach this really, really difficult message.
- 12:16And he says, OK, and he returned speedily.
- 12:21I love that principle. I love that idea that I can be
- 12:26called to do things that are really, really hard or
- 12:30inconvenient or not ideal. But if I will respond to the
- 12:36promptings of the Lord and do them quickly, then I'm far more
- 12:41likely to to receive the help in this case, back to our story in
- 12:45the scriptures. Alma comes into the city having
- 12:48no idea where, what he's actually going to do, and then
- 12:50he runs into Amulek on the way in.
- 12:54And Amulek has seen a vision from from an Angel as well, and
- 12:58brings Alma home, feeds him, takes care of him.
- 13:02And then this opens the door, sets the stage for the great
- 13:06preaching that is going to begin in Chapter 9.
- 13:09OK, let's turn into Alma Chapter 9 and let's listen to how Alma
- 13:13structures and lays the foundation for what he's trying
- 13:16to teach the people. Alma's speech is understood in a
- 13:20covenant of context. I want you to pay attention to
- 13:22certain words that appear in in Alma's speaking.
- 13:26So if you take for example, verses 8 through 18, look for
- 13:31words like how does he use the word forget or the word
- 13:34remember. He talks about deliverance and
- 13:37mercy and promises. All this has to do with
- 13:41covenantal language and what he's getting the people to focus
- 13:45on. He says, you know, could can you
- 13:47really forget all the incredible deeds of deliverance that God
- 13:51has done to show his mercy and his love and his salvation for
- 13:55you? He has all these promises that
- 13:57he's made. And you should remember these
- 13:59things. And actually you should put this
- 14:01word back up here. The order of the ordinances in
- 14:05the gospel, like baptism and sacrament and temple covenants,
- 14:09are invitations for us to remember that God delivers us in
- 14:14mercy and fulfills promises. There is an order for the
- 14:17covenant path, and I'll just read a couple of the verses
- 14:20here, and I want you to to listen to how Alma's trying to
- 14:24teach this orderliness that God has in the plan of salvation and
- 14:28that the covenants are the invitation to experience the
- 14:31beauty of God's order. So let's take a look at verse 8.
- 14:35Behold, all you wicked and perverse generation, how have
- 14:38you forgotten the tradition of your father's?
- 14:41Yeah, How soon you've forgotten the commandments of God.
- 14:44You forget the commandments of God.
- 14:45You cannot prosper in the land. And I think we all know what
- 14:49happens in Ammanihah. They get fully destroyed in a
- 14:51single day, which they said we wouldn't even believe it if you
- 14:53told us that would happen. Verse nine, Do you not remember
- 14:57that our Father Lehigh was brought out of Jerusalem by the
- 15:00hand of God? You not remember that they were
- 15:03all led by him through the wilderness.
- 15:05So again, we want you to remember these stories of
- 15:08salvation, of deliverance, because there's signs and
- 15:12symbols of God's mercy that God will fulfill his promises to the
- 15:16faithful. And what Amma's trying to lay
- 15:18out is we all have the same access to those promises.
- 15:21The people of Ammaniha who were just in the grasp of like this
- 15:24terrible wickedness, have the ability to receive the same
- 15:28promises if they would just remember and not forget all the
- 15:32good that God had done for them and not forget they had duties
- 15:36to keep the commandments. Verse 10 Have you forgotten so
- 15:40soon how many times He delivered our fathers out of the hands of
- 15:43their enemies? Verse 11 If it had not been for
- 15:47His matchless power and His mercy and His long-suffering
- 15:50towards us, we should unavoidably have been cut off on
- 15:53the face of the earth. Verse 12 And this is the crux of
- 15:56what Alma's trying to get at. You are commanded to repent.
- 16:00Except you repent, you cannot inherit the Kingdom of God.
- 16:04If you don't repent, you will be strewn.
- 16:07OK, destroyed. Destroyed means fully strewn
- 16:10away, thrown away. Verse 13.
- 16:13Do you not remember the words which he spake unto Lehigh?
- 16:16And this is one of the core messages of the Book of Mormon,
- 16:20and it's actually a summary of our covenant obligations to God
- 16:26and His children. Here it is.
- 16:29Inasmuch as ye shall keep my commandments, ye shall prosper
- 16:33in the land. Inasmuch as you will not keep my
- 16:35commandments, you shall be cut off for the presence of the
- 16:38Lord. And that's actually what it
- 16:39means To prosper is to have God's presence.
- 16:42If you don't keep the commandments, you do not have
- 16:45God's presence, and you are therefore not prospering.
- 16:49I want to give you 2 invitations.
- 16:50One, I want you to think about times in your life where you
- 16:55have remembered the great deeds of deliverance God has done for
- 16:59you and you've experienced His mercy and seen His promises.
- 17:03And back in Alma five, he asked us, can we remember these
- 17:05things? We should do that again on a
- 17:08regular basis. The sacrament is an invitation
- 17:10for us to remember the great deeds God has done for us.
- 17:13And we recommit ourselves to offering our hearts and our love
- 17:16to God and to be fully committed on the covenant path to keep the
- 17:20commandments. I also encourage you to look at
- 17:22the rest of this chapter and look at the promises that Alma
- 17:26reinstates around the Lamanites. You know, we've spent all this
- 17:30time focusing on the Nephites, the good guys.
- 17:32The Lamanites always seem to be the bad guys for the most part
- 17:34of the Book of Mormon. There are some exceptions.
- 17:37And it's interesting here that Alma lays out that the
- 17:40Lamanites, they are actually off the covenant path because their
- 17:45ancient forefathers had misinformed them, miseducated
- 17:48them, taking them off the path. And so these descendants didn't
- 17:52know any better. And it's some future day.
- 17:55And that is actually happening right now in the latter days.
- 17:59Those descendants will be invited back in and they can
- 18:02have a fullness of the promises that God had promised Abraham,
- 18:06Isaac, Jacob, Nephi, Jacob, Enos in the Book of Mormon and
- 18:11others. So Alma is trying to help the
- 18:14people of Ammaniah know there is a pathway of covenants of order
- 18:19that you are invited in to get on that path and to demonstrate
- 18:24to God your faithfulness. And then you get the fullness of
- 18:27everything you want, all the prosperity.
- 18:29We'll see in future chapters that they were focused on the
- 18:31wrong things. They define their own prosperity
- 18:36not in the ways of God, but in the ways of men.
- 18:39So when Elma finishes his speech with the people in Chapter 9,
- 18:44then it's Amulex turn this second witness.
- 18:47This is the difference between the first time Alma Wyndham and
- 18:51I and the second time is now he's no longer alone.
- 18:54You get a second witness that God is prepared to stand next to
- 18:57him. Amulek and Amulek introduces
- 19:00himself as look, I I'm a man of no small reputation.
- 19:05He's his background being a descendant of a Minidai, the guy
- 19:08who interpreted the writing of the Finger of God on the wall of
- 19:11the temple, that we don't have that story in the book,
- 19:14unfortunately. And then he gives us a glimpse
- 19:17into something that is very, very applicable to many of us.
- 19:21He tells us in verse five that he never had known much of the
- 19:24ways of the Lord and his mysteries and his marvelous
- 19:26power. And then in verse six of chapter
- 19:2910, he says, nevertheless, I did harden my heart for I was called
- 19:33many times and I would not hear. Therefore I knew concerning
- 19:37these things, yet I would not know.
- 19:40The implication being, oh, I knew better, but I had convinced
- 19:44myself otherwise because I wanted to keep doing what I
- 19:46wanted to do. And thus he begins talking to
- 19:51his people. He lives in Ammani Ha about his
- 19:54own conversion experience and explaining the reasons why
- 19:58they're struggling. And he starts getting in, in a
- 20:01bit of an argument with some of the lawyers in Ammani Ha.
- 20:05And if we turn the page over to Chapter 11, this heightens.
- 20:09And then you get Mormon doing something very strange.
- 20:12In Chapter 11, he breaks up the storytelling starting in a verse
- 20:17five and he says, now let me give you the the reckoning of
- 20:20the Nephite money. You'll notice it never uses the
- 20:23word coin or coinage system in the Book of Mormon.
- 20:27Coins aren't invented by this time.
- 20:30So this is their monetary system.
- 20:32This is the weights and measures of their gold and silver.
- 20:35The way they're taking care of the economic things.
- 20:38We're not going to spend a ton of time on covering all of
- 20:41these, these names of their gold and their silver and the
- 20:46different values. Mormon gives you extensive
- 20:50descriptions of their monetary system, and there are a variety
- 20:55of reasons why he probably did that.
- 20:57The most obvious one is probably to help us gain a little bit of
- 21:01context for what's about to happen in the story.
- 21:04Oh and by the way, the lawyer that they're interacting with
- 21:06here, his name is Zezrim, one of the names of the silver in verse
- 21:1112. And Ezram of Silver was as great
- 21:15as 4 seenums. What Tyler's pointed out in
- 21:18Hebrew the word zay can mean it or he or he of.
- 21:23So you have this guy named Z Ezram, and his name in Hebrew
- 21:27may mean he of the silver Ezrim, which is apparently the second
- 21:33highest monetary value in the Nephite system in silver.
- 21:37So it's a little funny, this guy who's so focused on money, this
- 21:41actually may be kind of a code word.
- 21:43It may not have been his real name that Mormons like.
- 21:45Oh yeah, that silver money filthy lucre guy.
- 21:48Or Zezrim. All he cared about was the
- 21:51things of mankind. Now, having said that, this is
- 21:54interesting because we as a people do this all the time.
- 21:58If you were to meet Zezrum today, would you see him as a
- 22:03money grubbing, deceptive guy who at the time as a lawyer,
- 22:08this look of I'm going to trap you?
- 22:10Or would you see him as one of the greatest success stories in
- 22:14the whole Book of Mormon? He's named Zezrum, but he
- 22:18becomes a man of great power, a man of God, not a man of money.
- 22:24So as we move forward in this story and you're, you're reading
- 22:28what he did, be careful in your own mind not to keep him held
- 22:34hostage to his past because his past is pretty rough.
- 22:39Give him like Alma the Younger, his companion, an opportunity to
- 22:42move beyond those past issues and become this this glorious
- 22:48disciple of Christ moving forward.
- 22:50So what happens is in the next next part of the story, verse 22
- 22:54is Zezrum is going to hold out six aunties of silver and offer
- 22:59them to Amulek and say, if you'll deny God, I'll give you
- 23:03these six aunties of silver. Now, if Mormon hadn't spent some
- 23:07time giving us their monetary system, that would have meant
- 23:10absolutely nothing to us. Here are 6 aunties of silver.
- 23:13We know nothing about that, but we do know now I'm not going to
- 23:17bore you to death with the mass. What we know is he's holding a
- 23:20major chunk of change. It represents 42 days wage for a
- 23:28judge in their society. That's a lot of money and he's
- 23:33saying all you have to do is deny the existence of a supreme
- 23:36being. Bottom of verse 22.
- 23:38Now look at 23. Now emulates said, Oh, thou
- 23:41child of hell, why tempt ye me? Now Amulek may or may not have
- 23:45read the book How to Win Friends and Influence People by this
- 23:48time, but he's not. He's not beating around the Bush
- 23:52here. Then look at verse 24.
- 23:55Believeth thou that there is no God?
- 23:57I say unto you, Nay, thou knowest that there is a God, but
- 24:01thou lovest that lucre more than him.
- 24:04You have made that money in your hand.
- 24:07Become your God. That money motivates you more
- 24:12than God motivates you at this point.
- 24:14And you've lied, Zezrim, you said you were going to give me
- 24:17that, but in your heart you said you're just using that as bait
- 24:21to get me to say something. Then you're going to withhold
- 24:23it. Now look at the next part of the
- 24:25dialogue, verse 26. Zezrim said unto him, Thou
- 24:28sayest there is a true and living God.
- 24:30And Amulek said, yeah, there is a true and living God.
- 24:33Now this is interesting. Zezrim said, is there more than
- 24:36one God? And he answered, No.
- 24:39Now Zeezram said unto him again, how knowest all these things?
- 24:42And the answer amulet gives us. An Angel hath made them known
- 24:46unto me. This just happened very recently
- 24:48for him. That's how I know them.
- 24:50Different than Alma's response about the Holy Ghost and fasting
- 24:53for many days in a previous lesson.
- 24:56Look at verse 32. Zezram said again, Who is he
- 24:59that shall come? Is it the Son of God?
- 25:02And he said, yeah. And Zezram said again, shall he
- 25:06save his people in their sins? And Amalek answered and said he
- 25:10shall not, for it is impossible for him to deny his word.
- 25:13Now watch what happens. This happens all the time.
- 25:16Today you saw the dialogue here. Now Zezrim the lawyer turns to
- 25:21the group. And in verse 35 he said to the
- 25:24people, see that you remember these things.
- 25:26For he said that there is but one God.
- 25:28And he saith that the Son of God shall come, but he shall not
- 25:32save his people. You see what happened?
- 25:35He took what Amulek said and parsed it out of context to use
- 25:40it against him. He shall not save his people.
- 25:43That is not what Amulek said. Amulek was asked will he save
- 25:47his people in their sins? And he said no, he won't.
- 25:50So now look at verse 37. Here's Amulek jumping back in
- 25:54again. I say unto you again that he
- 25:56cannot save them in their sins. Oh, the power of a preposition,
- 26:03right? He says, will he save them in
- 26:07their sins? And the answer is no, God cannot
- 26:12save us in our sins. The eat, drink can be merry, for
- 26:15tomorrow you die and it'll be well with you, because God loves
- 26:18you. Doctrine that Nihor had taught.
- 26:21That's a false doctrine. So look how he clarifies it.
- 26:25No unclean thing can inherit the Kingdom of heaven.
- 26:27Therefore how can you be saved? Except you inherit the Kingdom
- 26:29of heaven, you cannot be saved in your sins.
- 26:33The word we would use here instead of in is God's Son will
- 26:39come to save us from our sins. Notice that he goes on to say in
- 26:46verse 40, He shall come into the world to redeem his people, and
- 26:49he shall take upon him the transgressions of those who
- 26:52believe on his name. Now verse 42, things shift
- 26:56really, really powerfully to a big eternal context Here he's
- 27:00going to talk about two deaths. Here you get the physical death
- 27:07and you get a spiritual death that are going to be discussed
- 27:13by Amulek really powerfully. Verse 42 Now there is a death
- 27:17which is called a temporal death and the death of Christ shall
- 27:20loose the bands of this temporal death and all shall be raised
- 27:25from this temporal death. The word temporal comes from the
- 27:30root tempo, which means time there there's time attached to
- 27:36it. It's not eternal, it's temporal,
- 27:38it'll end, it'll pass. So the physical death is going
- 27:44to pass, it's temporal. It's got a clock ticking.
- 27:48It's not going to last forever. And he describes in this has to
- 27:53be one of the best places in all the Scripture to describe the
- 27:56resurrection, this physical resurrection from the grave.
- 27:59The spirit and the body shall be reunited again in its perfect
- 28:02form. Both lemon joint shall be
- 28:04restored to its proper frame, even as we now are at this time.
- 28:09And we shall be brought to stand before God.
- 28:13We're going to be brought out of the grave, overcoming the
- 28:15physical death and the spiritual death, the separation from God's
- 28:19presence, that's going to be overcome as well.
- 28:23So we're going to be brought and arraigned before God.
- 28:26There's going to be a judgement experience.
- 28:31We're going to be brought before God, knowing even as we know
- 28:33now, and have a bright recollection of all of our
- 28:35guilt. Now, who gets this?
- 28:37This restoration, overcoming both of these deaths inherited
- 28:40by Adam, cometh to all, both old and young, both bond and free,
- 28:45both male and female, both the wicked and the righteous.
- 28:48And even there shall not so much as a hair of their heads be
- 28:50lost, but everything shall be restored to its perfect frame.
- 28:53Notice will be brought and be arraigned before the bar of
- 28:57Christ the Son and God the Father and the Holy Spirit,
- 29:02which is 1 eternal God, to be judged according to their works,
- 29:05whether they be good or whether they be evil.
- 29:08Everyone, good, bad, black, white, bond free male freeman,
- 29:13everyone will be brought and arraigned before the bar of
- 29:18Christ in the presence of the Father and the Holy Ghost as
- 29:21well, which is 1 Eternal God. Isn't it fascinating that you
- 29:25and I are going to be judged according to our works?
- 29:28But Jesus Christ was already judged according to your works,
- 29:33and he was found guilty and he was punished to the full extent
- 29:35of the law. And so now it's our opportunity
- 29:39to come and stand before the One who already knows what it's like
- 29:42to be judged of our works. There's nobody that you would
- 29:44rather have be your judge than Jesus Christ because of how
- 29:48perfectly he understands you and me and what we're going through
- 29:51now. Amylok finishes there, and then
- 29:54Alma jumps back up in 12, and now he's going to take that
- 29:57doctrine and take it even deeper.
- 30:00Look at the way he describes this experience here, overcoming
- 30:04Adam's spiritual death that we've inherited from the fall of
- 30:08Adam and Eve as we're brought back into the presence of God.
- 30:11Look at verse 14. Our words will condemn us, our
- 30:14works will condemn us. We shall not be found spotless,
- 30:17and our thoughts will also condemn us.
- 30:19And in this awful state, we shall not dare to look up to our
- 30:22God. And we would fain be glad if we
- 30:24could command the rocks in the mountains to fall upon us, to
- 30:27hide us from His presence. But this cannot be.
- 30:30We must come forth and stand before Him in His glory and in
- 30:34His power, in His might and majesty and dominion.
- 30:36If you're marking the attributes of God, verse 15 is loaded with
- 30:40characteristic traits of God. Now verse 16.
- 30:43Now behold, I say unto you, then cometh the death, even a second
- 30:47death, which is a spiritual death.
- 30:49Then is a time that whosoever dieth in his sins as to a
- 30:52temporal death shall also die a spiritual death.
- 30:55He shall die as to things pertaining unto righteousness.
- 30:58What he's saying is if you've gotten here and you've totally,
- 31:02you people in Ammaniah, you've totally rejected this covenant
- 31:05that that Christ has offered to you and you've turned your back
- 31:09on him, you're going to be brought back into the presence
- 31:13of God, but then you're going to suffer a second death, a
- 31:17spiritual death again. You're going to be taken out of
- 31:20God's presence again because of the decisions that you've made.
- 31:25Now look at verse 20. Antiona, a chief ruler there in
- 31:30ammonia, he comes and he says, well, wait, you're saying
- 31:32everyone's going to be resurrected?
- 31:34I don't believe that because the scriptures say that God placed
- 31:37cherubim, a flaming sword to protect the way to the tree of
- 31:40life so that Adam and Eve couldn't partake of the fruit of
- 31:42the tree of life and live forever.
- 31:44Are you seeing how once again we take things out of context and
- 31:48only share a part of the the scripture or part of the story
- 31:52to to establish belief? This is very dangerous because
- 31:56then Alma goes on to explain, no, if they had instantly
- 32:01partaken of the fruit of the tree of life, they would have
- 32:04lived forever in their sins. They needed a period of time, a
- 32:07probationary state, to be able to repent.
- 32:09So we enter that probationary state in verse 24 as a time to
- 32:14prepare to meet God, a time to prepare for that in the state.
- 32:18That's what the plan of redemption is all about.
- 32:21Now, as you turn the page over, he's going to explain more of
- 32:25this doctrine of the fall and the redemption and how angels
- 32:28come and reveal all of these things.
- 32:30Look at verse 32. Therefore, God gave unto them
- 32:34commandments after having made unknown unto them the plan of
- 32:38redemption. God teaches the plan so that you
- 32:42can see the, the, the grand why and The Who and the how.
- 32:48And then once you once you understand that, then he gives
- 32:52you the commandments, which are that covenant connection to say
- 32:55you've seen the blueprints. Now let me give you the step by
- 32:58step instructions of how to get from point A to point Z because
- 33:01just because you've seen the vision isn't going to make it so
- 33:05you get there without a lot of guidance and directions.
- 33:09Your your spiritual GPS, so to speak, along the way.
- 33:12Look at verse 33. But God did call on men in the
- 33:17name of his Son as being the plan of redemption, saying, if
- 33:21you will repent, harden not your hearts, then will I have mercy
- 33:25upon you through my only begotten Son.
- 33:28Brothers and sisters, Jesus Christ is the mediator, the
- 33:32intercessor, the go between, not just for us talking to God.
- 33:38Verse 33 But God did call on men in the name of his Son.
- 33:43We call upon God in the name of his Son, and God calls upon us
- 33:47in the name of his Son. Jesus is the messenger of the
- 33:51covenant. He is the go between.
- 33:53He is the one who embodies everything God wants for us, not
- 33:58just in our lives here, but in eternities.
- 34:00This covenant path isn't just for mortality, it's for
- 34:03eternity. And here's Alma preaching this
- 34:06idea. The plan of redemption is so
- 34:09simple you could put it into two words.
- 34:13Trust Jesus. So it's our hope and our prayer
- 34:19for all of us as we move forward that we will not puff ourselves
- 34:24up needing to be humbled and abased as we go forward in life.
- 34:28But that will stay humble. That will call upon God in the
- 34:31name of his Son and listen as God calls upon us in the name of
- 34:36his Son. That will, as our Prophet has
- 34:38repeatedly said, learn how to hear him, and follow and hearken
- 34:44and obey. We hope you can feel the joy and
- 34:48the excitement of the gospel. How beautiful the plan is.
- 34:51How beautiful upon the feet of the mountains are those who
- 34:55declare glad tidings, and we find that here in the
- 34:58Scriptures. Know that you're loved.
