- 0:14Speaker 1: Amazon Music. We're glad you all could be with us
- 0:16Speaker 1: as well. This is part of a news segment here
- 0:19Speaker 1: at WYED, and today we're talking about knee pain. If
- 0:22Speaker 1: knee pain has you thinking knee replacement may be your
- 0:26Speaker 1: only option, There may be another approach to consider. The
- 0:29Speaker 1: minimally invasive knee bar procedure is designed to preserve and
- 0:33Speaker 1: support your natural knee and may help some patients delay
- 0:36Speaker 1: replacement while returning to activity sooner. Here to explain who
- 0:40Speaker 1: may be a candidate and what patients should know, we're
- 0:42Speaker 1: excited to welcome Dr. Brian Cole to our broadcast today.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Dr.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Cole is an orthopedic surgeon and a sports medicine expert.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Dr.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Cole, thank you again for stopping by. I really appreciate it.
- 0:51Speaker 2: I'm happy to be with you this morning.
- 0:52Speaker 1: So I want to ask you, Dr. Cole, many people
- 0:54Speaker 1: have persistent knee pain but may not be ready for
- 0:57Speaker 1: a knee replacement. What do we now understand about where
- 1:00Speaker 1: that pain may be coming from?
- 1:02Speaker 2: I've been an orthopedic surgeon in practice for nearly 30
- 1:05Speaker 2: years now, and my area of interest and expertise, besides
- 1:10Speaker 2: managing typical problems of the shoulder or elbow knee, has
- 1:13Speaker 2: been on techniques that help to provide alternatives to joint replacement.
- 1:18Speaker 2: otherwise known as joint preservation. And historically, the research that
- 1:23Speaker 2: we've done here in Chicago at Rush University Medical Center
- 1:27Speaker 2: has focused on ways to regenerate cartilage, and we've been
- 1:31Speaker 2: very successful there. But one of the things that we've
- 1:33Speaker 2: also recognized is that these patients, by the time they
- 1:35Speaker 2: get to us in our office, have an overload condition
- 1:39Speaker 2: that involves the bone adjacent or near the cartilage. And
- 1:43Speaker 2: that's the condition that the NEBAR procedure focuses on, as
- 1:46Speaker 2: a treatment for the overload that we see in patients
- 1:51Speaker 2: who have early joint failure. And that's really the focus
- 1:54Speaker 2: of this brief discussion we're having this morning.
- 1:57Speaker 1: So what is the knee bar procedure then, Dr. Cole?
- 2:00Speaker 2: The knee bar procedure is a minimally invasive procedure that
- 2:03Speaker 2: utilizes an implant or a device that's placed adjacent to
- 2:07Speaker 2: the cartilage surface but in the bone itself in the
- 2:10Speaker 2: region that's showing overload by imaging or by MRI. it's
- 2:13Speaker 2: almost like treating a fracture or a stress fracture. In fact,
- 2:17Speaker 2: we now call it a subchondral insufficiency fracture. Sub means beneath,
- 2:21Speaker 2: chondral means beneath the cartilage. And the device itself provides
- 2:25Speaker 2: initial stability, in other words, to maybe share load in
- 2:28Speaker 2: that region, much like you would see rebar in fiberglass
- 2:31Speaker 2: or concrete in a foundation. And then over time, what
- 2:34Speaker 2: we have shown through imaging and following our patients prospectively
- 2:38Speaker 2: is the device resorbs and essentially turns into bone and
- 2:41Speaker 2: is associated with a healing response in the bone itself.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Wow, that's remarkable. And I know for those who have
- 2:47Speaker 1: been dealing with knee pain, it's something I'm sure they'll
- 2:49Speaker 1: be glad to hear about. as a great alternative. So, Dr. Cole,
- 2:52Speaker 1: where can our audience go for more information and to
- 2:55Speaker 1: maybe see if they might be a good candidate for
- 2:57Speaker 1: the NEVAR procedure?
- 2:58Speaker 2: Certainly, just as if anyone pursuing care and treatment for
- 3:01Speaker 2: joint pain, an orthopedic surgeon is an excellent resource. Some
- 3:04Speaker 2: may not be completely familiar with the procedures. It's relatively new,
- 3:07Speaker 2: but look, we've been performing it now for more than
- 3:09Speaker 2: three years. There's been More than 1,200 patients have been
- 3:12Speaker 2: treated with the device, and we now have publications discussing it.
- 3:16Speaker 2: But an orthopedic surgeon should know about it, but they
- 3:18Speaker 2: can ask their orthopedic surgeon if they're familiar with the
- 3:20Speaker 2: NEBAR procedure. Alternatively, they can go to nebardoc.com, nebardoc.com. one word,
- 3:29Speaker 2: to find surgeons who might be in their area who
- 3:32Speaker 2: have a specific interest in this procedure.
- 3:34Speaker 1: And we'll make sure to link that up. Dr. Cole,
- 3:35Speaker 1: thank you so much for the great information. I know
- 3:37Speaker 1: our audience will appreciate it and looking forward to speaking
- 3:39Speaker 1: with you again. Thank you.
- 3:40Speaker 2: I'd be happy to come back.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Thank you. I appreciate it. And we thank your audience
- 3:44Speaker 1: for tuning in to another great segment of Conversations Live. Again,
- 3:46Speaker 1: part of a new segment here at WYAD. Until next time,
- 3:51Speaker 1: I'm your host, Cyrus Webster, saying, as always, enjoy your day,
