- 0:00Speaker 1: Time now for back to the basics and healthcare with
- 0:02Speaker 1: Balance Life Chiropractic. We have doctor Harley and we're going
- 0:05Speaker 1: to talk today about you said TMI too much.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Information TMJ pal mandibular joints.
- 0:10Speaker 3: That was my next guest. So now she said TMJ.
- 0:14Speaker 3: I didn't know what that meant. So what does TMJ mean?
- 0:16Speaker 2: That is your basically your jaw where your jaw hinges at. Oh,
- 0:20Speaker 2: so TMJ would be temporal mandibuler is like you're mandible
- 0:23Speaker 2: and then obviously it's the joint there right there, So
- 0:25Speaker 2: obviously the one on both sides your face.
- 0:27Speaker 3: Yeah, and mine gets used a lot because I do
- 0:29Speaker 3: a lot.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Of gapp and some people might notice that if they
- 0:32Speaker 2: do a lot more talking, they might notice some more
- 0:34Speaker 2: popping clicking. So that was something we want to talk
- 0:36Speaker 2: about it. I don't know if we've really touched on
- 0:38Speaker 2: it much that I don't think.
- 0:38Speaker 3: So, because that's the first I've ever heard of the
- 0:40Speaker 3: TMJ thing.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Yeah, So it's like, you know, something I see quite
- 0:43Speaker 2: often in the office, and it was like, you know,
- 0:44Speaker 2: it's kind of a big one that people don't realize
- 0:47Speaker 2: that when they're dealing with it, how it can affect
- 0:49Speaker 2: them when eating, talking, chewing gum, you name it, and
- 0:54Speaker 2: how to treat it too.
- 0:55Speaker 3: So you can adjust my jaw.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Yeah, we can actually work with your jaw.
- 0:59Speaker 3: I usually I heard Heidi say please wire it shut.
- 1:04Speaker 3: That's not what you do.
- 1:04Speaker 2: That, that'd be more dentistry.
- 1:06Speaker 1: I don't do that.
- 1:07Speaker 3: So what is it you do then?
- 1:08Speaker 2: So a lot of times we start with just doing
- 1:11Speaker 2: cervical adjustment, so up in your neck, as a lot
- 1:13Speaker 2: of the muscles that move your jaw and connect actually
- 1:16Speaker 2: connect into your neck. So having your neck out of
- 1:18Speaker 2: alignment can contribute to that jaw issue. That could be
- 1:21Speaker 2: part of it. All right, If that doesn't seem to
- 1:24Speaker 2: be correcting it, then I start with doing more actual
- 1:26Speaker 2: working on the jaw, doing more like a traction type
- 1:29Speaker 2: of thing, because a lot of times what's happening, especially
- 1:32Speaker 2: if you're getting clicking, popping, or locking on one side
- 1:36Speaker 2: of the jaw is kind of lazier than the other.
- 1:38Speaker 2: One side's working harder and the other side is not
- 1:40Speaker 2: working hard enough, and so we're trying to get the
- 1:44Speaker 2: side that's not working like it's supposed to get that
- 1:46Speaker 2: one to work faster so than the side that's working
- 1:48Speaker 2: too hard, doesn't need to keep working over time to
- 1:52Speaker 2: make up for the lack of movement on the other side.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Is this more common in men or women or is
- 1:57Speaker 1: it kind of fifty to fifty.
- 1:59Speaker 2: I haven't really known noticed trend of anything. Had to
- 2:02Speaker 2: maybe see some more women, But then my practice is
- 2:04Speaker 2: a lot higher percentage of women, probably because I'm a
- 2:06Speaker 2: female chiropractor. But I mean, as far as I know,
- 2:10Speaker 2: there's no like direct link between men or women. I
- 2:13Speaker 2: just happened to see more women and children.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Do you notice this is something that progresses with age.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Is it something that I've dealt with my whole life
- 2:21Speaker 1: or do I get TMJ when I get older?
- 2:23Speaker 2: Some people they have had it their whole life. You know,
- 2:25Speaker 2: maybe something happened in their youth. They played sports, got
- 2:28Speaker 2: their you know, face hit by I got elbowed in
- 2:31Speaker 2: the face a couple of different times, you know, playing basketball,
- 2:34Speaker 2: or you know, you get jarred in some way. Sometimes
- 2:36Speaker 2: that can be the spark that starts your TMJ issues.
- 2:40Speaker 2: And one patient they dislocated their job when they're eating
- 2:43Speaker 2: a sandwich, like one of those big sub sandwiches like
- 2:46Speaker 2: super you know, stuff like that happened bite and by
- 2:50Speaker 2: the time she got to the office, you know she
- 2:52Speaker 2: actually had had already had gone back into its proper socket.
- 2:56Speaker 2: But that can start TMJ issues. Yeah, if you eat
- 2:59Speaker 2: something really hard or a larger food item that makes
- 3:02Speaker 2: you have to open your jaw a little bit more
- 3:03Speaker 2: and like you know, crunched down harder can start causing
- 3:08Speaker 2: some TMJ issues.
- 3:09Speaker 1: I see like a campaign for some giant subcompany right now.
- 3:13Speaker 1: It's it comes with a free TMJ appointment. Maybe not that.
- 3:18Speaker 1: So is this something that typically is solved easily or
- 3:22Speaker 1: is this a difficult thing to solve?
- 3:24Speaker 2: It probably depends on who you talk to and most
- 3:26Speaker 2: of the time patients, when it starts happening, it's going
- 3:29Speaker 2: to keep coming back. Just as our jaw join is
- 3:32Speaker 2: supposed to be very stable and for whatever reason that
- 3:35Speaker 2: has caused it to be unstable, you know, it takes
- 3:38Speaker 2: time to get it to work on stop being painful
- 3:40Speaker 2: popping and clicking. But then we want to make sure
- 3:42Speaker 2: that we're keeping it where it's supposed to because the
- 3:44Speaker 2: muscles in your face can still pull it. Or if
- 3:47Speaker 2: it is from a chronic thing, maybe you are talking
- 3:49Speaker 2: a lot, or chewing a lot of gum, or sleep
- 3:52Speaker 2: with like your face twisted or something, you know, something
- 3:54Speaker 2: that could be aggravating it more. It can come back.
- 3:57Speaker 2: But a lot of times, you know, just with treatment,
- 3:59Speaker 2: patients are seeing improvement in their pain and the locking
- 4:02Speaker 2: and clicking and popping.
- 4:03Speaker 3: Is it a muscle thing then or more of a
- 4:05Speaker 3: joint thing?
- 4:06Speaker 2: Kind of be both? Yeah, A lot of times it
- 4:08Speaker 2: can be muscle that's keeping it from moving like it's
- 4:11Speaker 2: supposed to you. As we have some really big strong
- 4:13Speaker 2: muscles in our jaw, you know, the massaterre and the
- 4:15Speaker 2: buccinator are two of those that they're just really strong
- 4:18Speaker 2: muscles because we use them all day every day. So
- 4:20Speaker 2: when they're really tight, they're going to keep kind of
- 4:23Speaker 2: pulling on that jaw.
- 4:25Speaker 1: So I remember one time I yawned, and when I yawned,
- 4:27Speaker 1: like I had a cramp and it hurt.
- 4:31Speaker 3: Would that be TMJ or is that something you're.
- 4:33Speaker 2: Gonna feel TMJ like right underneath your ear because that's
- 4:36Speaker 2: where that jaw joint hangs out.
- 4:38Speaker 3: Okay, so mine was just TMI.
- 4:42Speaker 2: Or you know, strain that muscle or you open your
- 4:44Speaker 2: mouth too wide or.
- 4:45Speaker 3: I'm just talking too much. That's my problem.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Now If somebody is and I'm being silly about this,
- 4:50Speaker 1: but it's a very serious thing. If this is a
- 4:51Speaker 1: thing you struggle with and you're suffering with TMJ and
- 4:54Speaker 1: and you know I have.
- 4:55Speaker 3: A sore jaw or is it the jaw that sorry said?
- 4:59Speaker 3: It's under your ears, right, it's that it's.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Where that joint hangs out. It's at the top of
- 5:03Speaker 2: our jaw. So like the jaw it self, you know,
- 5:04Speaker 2: we think of our chin our job will not. You
- 5:07Speaker 2: don't necessarily feel it there. You're going to feel it
- 5:09Speaker 2: more like right underneath your ear where that jaw hinges at.
- 5:12Speaker 3: Somebody struggling with that and they would like some help.
- 5:14Speaker 3: You can help. How do they get a hold of you?
- 5:16Speaker 2: Yeah, and maybe you haven't thought of chiropractic to help
- 5:18Speaker 2: with treating your job pain or TMJ issues, and you've
- 5:22Speaker 2: been to a dentist or you've done PT you know,
- 5:24Speaker 2: that's a good time now to see a chiropractor and
- 5:26Speaker 2: work on your jaw issues.
