He went downstairs because it sounded as though someone was awake. In his grandmother’s remote Irish farmhouse, voices carried through the darkness from a room that should have been quiet. He couldn’t make out the words, but he could hear enough to follow them. Then he opened the door, and nothing about what he’d heard made sense.
The next morning, he asked his aunt about it. Her response wasn’t an explanation. It was an instruction: never talk about it again. Until then, he’d had one strange night to wonder about. Now he also had a relative who seemed determined to end the conversation…
