- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:13Just a reminder that Finding God at Work
- 0:15isn't just a podcast, it's also an online
- 0:18course.
- 0:19Check it out at FindingGodAtWork.org.
- 0:27Our current series is wholehearted, becoming healthier Christians
- 0:31at work.
- 0:32And in this episode, we get to the
- 0:35body.
- 0:36How do our bodies affect our lives at
- 0:38work and what can it mean to be
- 0:39healthier in our relationship with our own bodies
- 0:42at work?
- 0:44Okay, so I want to start with more
- 0:45of a kind of a prayer exercise.
- 0:48Just take a moment right now, wherever you
- 0:50are, and notice your body.
- 0:54How are you feeling right now?
- 1:03Are you in Are you holding tension anywhere
- 1:06in your body, maybe in your shoulders or
- 1:08in your back?
- 1:12How do you feel in your own skin
- 1:15today?
- 1:18And now I encourage you, if you're able,
- 1:20if it's safe, if you're not in the
- 1:21car, to take your hand and just put
- 1:24it on your heart and breathe in to
- 1:29receive the presence of God in your body.
- 1:36If it's helpful, you can say, Holy Spirit,
- 1:38I welcome you as you take a few
- 1:41deep breaths.
- 1:45Holy Spirit, I welcome you.
- 1:50Holy Spirit, I welcome you.
- 1:55Holy Spirit, I welcome you.
- 2:01Then when you're ready, you can put your
- 2:03hand down and get ready for the rest
- 2:07of our podcast episode.
- 2:10Now, why do I start there?
- 2:13One reason I start there is that if
- 2:16you're like me, you forget that you have
- 2:18a body half of the time.
- 2:20I'm so focused on the ideas I'm thinking
- 2:22about or the work I'm doing or the
- 2:23people that I'm talking to, I am not
- 2:25always super aware of my own body.
- 2:28Now, on the other hand, sometimes we can
- 2:31be painfully aware of our own bodies because
- 2:33of literal physical pain, because of illness, because
- 2:36of tiredness, and often because our emotional relationship
- 2:40with our body is rather complicated, it can
- 2:43be hard to feel comfortable in your own
- 2:46skin.
- 2:48So all of that baggage, all of our
- 2:51history in our own body, all of the
- 2:53difficult or beautiful things that are part of
- 2:56our relationship with our body, those all come
- 2:58right into our work days with us every
- 3:00single day.
- 3:01Because even if you work remotely, which is
- 3:04kind of disembodied, you're still using your body
- 3:06to type on your laptop or your computer
- 3:08at home, you're still using your eyes to
- 3:10look at the screen.
- 3:11Your body is always with you when you
- 3:14are at work.
- 3:15So is there anything that Jesus has to
- 3:17say?
- 3:17Again, looking at Jesus as our anthropologist, someone
- 3:20who can tell us about human life and
- 3:22human nature, what does he have to say
- 3:25about our bodies and how that relates to
- 3:27our work?
- 3:29Well, I want to build on the work
- 3:30we've already done.
- 3:31So we've talked a little bit about our
- 3:32thoughts and our feelings.
- 3:34Then in our last episode, we talked about
- 3:35our heart or will.
- 3:37So I want to go to a passage
- 3:38where Jesus relates the heart to the body.
- 3:42So this is Matthew chapter 15, and Jesus
- 3:45has had a conflict with the Pharisees because
- 3:48the Pharisees had a ritual tradition of washing
- 3:51their hands before meals, and Jesus disciples did
- 3:54not always follow this ritual.
- 3:55So the Pharisees confronted Jesus about this.
- 3:58They had a little bit of a dispute.
- 3:59And then there's a follow-up conversation with
- 4:01the disciples, and Jesus explains more.
- 4:03He says, whatever enters the mouth goes into
- 4:07the stomach and then out of the body.
- 4:10But the things that come out of a
- 4:11person's mouth come from the heart, and these
- 4:14defile them.
- 4:16For out of the heart come evil thoughts,
- 4:18murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.
- 4:25These are what defile a person, but eating
- 4:27with unwashed hands does not defile them.
- 4:31Okay, so what's Jesus doing here?
- 4:33He's not just responding to the Pharisees' specific
- 4:36contention about this ritual of washing hands.
- 4:39He's getting at the deeper issue of how
- 4:42do external rituals relate to who we are
- 4:46on the inside?
- 4:46How do they relate to our heart?
- 4:48And so he uses this contrast of what
- 4:50defiles a person?
- 4:51What can make a person unclean?
- 4:54What can welcome spiritual darkness into a person's
- 4:56experience?
- 4:57And he says, failing to do a specific
- 5:00external bodily ritual is not the point.
- 5:03The point is, what's in the heart?
- 5:06Are they full of lust?
- 5:08Are they full of greed?
- 5:09Are they full of evil thoughts?
- 5:12Those are the things that bring spiritual darkness
- 5:15into someone's experience.
- 5:16Those are the things that defile a person.
- 5:18So on the one hand, Jesus is saying
- 5:20we shouldn't exaggerate the importance of the body
- 5:24versus this hidden inward life.
- 5:26What deeply matters about us is hidden.
- 5:29It's not all about external rituals and symbols.
- 5:32It's about the kind of person we're deeply
- 5:34becoming, and that's hidden.
- 5:36It's not as obvious as whether we've washed
- 5:38our hands or not.
- 5:39But he also talks about a positive relationship
- 5:42between the heart and the body.
- 5:45Did you catch that?
- 5:46He says, but the things that come out
- 5:48of a person's mouth come from the heart.
- 5:51The things that come out of a person's
- 5:53mouth, part of the body, come from the
- 5:57heart.
- 5:58So he's saying what's in your heart, that
- 6:00hidden part of you, will manifest itself in
- 6:03the movements of your body, often the movements
- 6:05of your mouth, the things that you say,
- 6:07but also by implication the movements of our
- 6:09hands and our feet, the rest of our
- 6:11body, the things that are inside of us
- 6:13are expressed through our physical bodies.
- 6:17So Jesus as a theological anthropologist is giving
- 6:19us a relationship between our inner life and
- 6:22our outer life.
- 6:23He's saying there's a flow to the human
- 6:25person.
- 6:26It's first will, then body.
- 6:29Okay, now Jesus in this specific passage talks
- 6:32about how that can go bad.
- 6:34If the will is bad, then what the
- 6:36body does will also be bad.
- 6:37But in other passages throughout the Bible, we
- 6:40also see that the good thing can happen
- 6:42too, that if the Holy Spirit is shaping
- 6:45our will, influencing how we choose, recreating us
- 6:48from the inside out by God's grace, then
- 6:51that goodness and life will then also flow
- 6:53from our will to our body.
- 6:56An unstated implication of what Jesus is saying
- 6:59here is that this is a gift, this
- 7:02way of our being coming together where we
- 7:04have a will that's hidden, but then expressed
- 7:08through a physical body, that is a gift
- 7:10of God.
- 7:12And even though Jesus doesn't specifically say that,
- 7:15he doesn't spell that out in this passage,
- 7:16we know that Jesus's ministry comes within the
- 7:19stream of the Hebrew prophetic tradition and the
- 7:21Torah and the writings of the Old Testament.
- 7:24And so when we turn to those writings,
- 7:25we see this statement about the body being
- 7:28a gift of God again and again.
- 7:31One of the characters we encounter in the
- 7:33Hebrew scriptures who spent a lot of time
- 7:35thinking about these things was King David, and
- 7:38he was among other things a poet, and
- 7:39he wrote about this in Psalm 139 as
- 7:42well as other passages.
- 7:44Starting in verse 13, David writes, for you
- 7:47created my innermost parts.
- 7:49You wove me in my mother's womb.
- 7:51I will give thanks to you because I
- 7:53am awesomely and wonderfully made.
- 7:56Wonderful are your works, and my soul knows
- 7:59it very well.
- 8:00My frame was not hidden from you when
- 8:02I was made in secret and skillfully formed
- 8:05in the depths of the earth.
- 8:07Your eyes have seen my formless substance, and
- 8:10in your book were written all the days
- 8:12that were ordained for me, when as yet
- 8:14there was not one of them.
- 8:17David is using a really amazing layered poetic
- 8:21language here to say that there's this secret
- 8:24place in the depths of the earth where
- 8:25God like weaves the body together.
- 8:28But you can see that the import of
- 8:30his statement is that the body is full
- 8:31of wonder, that it's full of beauty, that
- 8:34it reflects the creativity and the care of
- 8:37God in a special way.
- 8:38The body is a gift.
- 8:42Now, the body is a gift not just
- 8:43in the sense that God created it, but
- 8:45also in the sense that God continues to
- 8:47preserve and sustain the body over time.
- 8:50In another passage, David is having a conversation
- 8:52with a couple men named Rechab and Bana.
- 8:55This is in 2 Samuel chapter 4, and
- 8:57he's kind of just making an oblique reference
- 8:59to his relationship with God.
- 9:01He says, as the Lord lives, who has
- 9:03redeemed my life out of every adversity?
- 9:07So this is David's shorthand description of who
- 9:10God is to him.
- 9:11Oh, he's the Lord who has redeemed my
- 9:13life out of every adversity.
- 9:15Now, at that point in David's life, he
- 9:17had faced a lot of adversity.
- 9:18He had spent time on the run.
- 9:19His life had been threatened multiple times.
- 9:21He had faced difficulties from animals and from
- 9:24people and from various military conflicts.
- 9:26So when he says the Lord has redeemed
- 9:28my life out of every adversity, he's got
- 9:30a long list of adversities that God has
- 9:32redeemed him from.
- 9:33But that's David's way of thinking.
- 9:35It's like, hey, my body made it through
- 9:37every single one of those harrowing encounters.
- 9:40That was the Lord.
- 9:42The Lord was the one who redeemed my
- 9:43life out of those things.
- 9:46Now, the specific word translated as life here
- 9:49is the Hebrew word nefesh.
- 9:51And I don't really know Hebrew, but I
- 9:53count on the Bible Project guys to know
- 9:55Hebrew.
- 9:56They have this wonderful video about the Hebrew
- 9:58word nefesh, and we'll include a link to
- 10:00the video in our associated PDF guide for
- 10:02this episode, like we normally do for resources
- 10:04like this.
- 10:06And in this video, they talk about how
- 10:08nefesh, even though sometimes it's translated as soul,
- 10:13actually refers to the whole person, including their
- 10:16physical being.
- 10:17So for example, they cite Psalm 119 verse
- 10:20175.
- 10:21They say in Psalm 119, most translations read,
- 10:25let me live that I may praise you.
- 10:27In Hebrew, the poet literally says, let my
- 10:29nefesh live that it may praise you.
- 10:32By using nefesh, the poet emphasizes that their
- 10:35entire being, their life and their body offer
- 10:38thanks to God.
- 10:40So this Hebrew word, sometimes translated soul, actually
- 10:43means all of us, including our body.
- 10:46So you might wonder, when we talk about
- 10:48our body, and we're looking at Jesus as
- 10:49anthropologist, how does this connect to his command
- 10:52that we cited from Deuteronomy, then quoted in
- 10:55the Gospel of Luke, you shall love the
- 10:56Lord your God with all your heart, and
- 10:58with all your soul, and with all your
- 11:00strength, and with all your mind.
- 11:03Well, in that passage, the word translated soul
- 11:06is a Greek word that corresponds to that
- 11:09Hebrew word for nefesh.
- 11:12So ironically, when we look at that teaching
- 11:14of Jesus, loving the Lord your God with
- 11:16all your heart, and with all your soul,
- 11:17and with all your strength, and with all
- 11:19your mind, the word that gets us to
- 11:21body is the word soul.
- 11:23So it might be a little confusing, just
- 11:24because of how we use the word soul
- 11:26sometimes to mean the aspect of us beyond
- 11:28our body.
- 11:29But really, in the Bible, it's meant to
- 11:31be an integrated whole.
- 11:33And so we know that Jesus cares about
- 11:35our nefesh, our body, we know that our
- 11:37body is a gift.
- 11:39And so the question is, how does that
- 11:41relate to our lives at work?
- 11:43I think there's two things that we can
- 11:45say.
- 11:45One is that when we view our body,
- 11:48our nefesh, as a gift from God, then
- 11:51we are able to do our work with
- 11:53both humility and dignity.
- 11:57Now, why humility?
- 11:59Well, if your body is a gift, then
- 12:01you can't take full credit for it.
- 12:03So just a funny example, in the United
- 12:05States, if you're an adult man, and you
- 12:08are at least seven feet tall, you have
- 12:10a 17% chance of making it into
- 12:12the NBA.
- 12:13That's huge.
- 12:14That's almost one out of five.
- 12:16Now, by itself, height is not enough.
- 12:18You also have to practice and put in
- 12:19the effort and do everything that anybody who
- 12:22gets into the NBA does in order to
- 12:23get a certain level of skill.
- 12:25But you have a huge genetic advantage if
- 12:28you're seven feet tall.
- 12:29And that's something that's just a gift.
- 12:30It's just your genetic code determines how tall
- 12:32you're going to be.
- 12:33There's nothing you can do to change it.
- 12:34And there's nothing that I can do to
- 12:35ever become seven feet tall.
- 12:37I'm hanging out at five foot seven point
- 12:39five for the rest of my life, I'm
- 12:41pretty sure, until my spine starts to compress
- 12:43when I'm older.
- 12:44And so I do not have a genetic
- 12:46predisposition to help me get into the NBA,
- 12:48nor have I done the work to get
- 12:49into the NBA.
- 12:50But in whatever job we have, our body
- 12:53gives us certain advantages or disadvantages for our
- 12:56job.
- 12:57So if you're working on a farm and
- 12:59you got to unload potatoes from the back
- 13:00of a pickup truck, that requires physical strength
- 13:03and stamina.
- 13:04If you're working on a computer all day,
- 13:06you've got to have eyes that can process
- 13:08the information on the computer or ears that
- 13:09can process it.
- 13:10If you're using software for the visually impaired,
- 13:13you got to be able to coordinate your
- 13:15hands with your keyboard.
- 13:17If you're working in an environment with kids,
- 13:19you got to figure out how do I
- 13:21interact with the kids in a way that's
- 13:22safe where they can still hear me, they
- 13:25can still see me, but I'm down on
- 13:27their level when I need to be.
- 13:29Seeing a kindergarten teacher crouch down and tie
- 13:32a child's shoelaces without bonking their chin when
- 13:34they raise their head back up.
- 13:36Some of these are funny examples, but the
- 13:37point is all work is embodied.
- 13:40That's how it's supposed to work.
- 13:42God created us with this capacity for our
- 13:44will to express itself in our bodies.
- 13:48That's what Jesus is teaching.
- 13:49That's what the Hebrew scriptures are teaching.
- 13:51When we do something with our bodies to
- 13:53accomplish something at work, that's always resting on
- 13:57the genetic gift that we can't take credit
- 13:59for.
- 14:00Yes, we still apply effort and that's good
- 14:02to apply effort, but ultimately it comes from
- 14:05a source beyond ourselves.
- 14:06And so we shouldn't brag about it or
- 14:08be so impressed with how good we are
- 14:10at our job.
- 14:11So when we view our body, our nefesh,
- 14:14as a gift, we do our work with
- 14:16humility.
- 14:17The second thing is we do our work
- 14:19with dignity.
- 14:20And for this I want to turn to
- 14:21a book called The Life of the Body
- 14:23by Valerie Hess and Lane Arnold.
- 14:26They're workers in spiritual formation and spiritual direction.
- 14:30And they know how Jesus taking on a
- 14:33body says something about our body.
- 14:36Jesus came to earth as a human being
- 14:38through Mary's womb.
- 14:40That event affirms us in our own bodies.
- 14:44He ate, he slept, he walked, he laughed,
- 14:49he cried, he touched.
- 14:51The concrete reality of the incarnation is its
- 14:53uniqueness.
- 14:55God as a person here in a body,
- 14:57like us, on a physical earth, with us.
- 15:01Like other people, Jesus grew from infant to
- 15:04toddler to boy to teenager to man.
- 15:07He lived and breathed as we do.
- 15:10When he died, just as we will one
- 15:11day, his body ceased to live and breathe.
- 15:14The difference, of course, is that after three
- 15:15days he came to life again, resurrected in
- 15:18a physical body.
- 15:20As with Jesus' body, our bodies will be
- 15:22resurrected from the dead.
- 15:24That alone, aside from the vast theological impact,
- 15:27says something about the body, something that is
- 15:30going to be redeemed is worth caring for.
- 15:34Something that is going to be redeemed is
- 15:37worth caring for.
- 15:39When you are using your body in your
- 15:41workplace, you are using something that has been
- 15:43dignified by the creation of God, by the
- 15:46sustaining of God, and by the incarnation of
- 15:49God in a body like yours.
- 15:52And so when you are sweating it out,
- 15:54tossing those potatoes, or rubbing your eyes because
- 15:57you've been staring at the screen for a
- 15:58little bit too long, or panting after running
- 16:01around the recess field with a bunch of
- 16:03kindergartners, whatever it is that your body is
- 16:05feeling the burn in your workplace, there is
- 16:07an inherent dignity to that.
- 16:09To using your body, pushing your body forward
- 16:12into the effort that's required to get the
- 16:14work done, there is dignity in that.
- 16:17Your body will be redeemed someday, and it's
- 16:19worth taking care of.
- 16:20It's worth using for God's purposes.
- 16:23We see this in just a subtle way
- 16:25in the book of Ecclesiastes.
- 16:27This is in chapter 3, verse 11.
- 16:30God has made everything beautiful in its time.
- 16:33He has also set eternity in the human
- 16:35heart, yet no one can fathom what God
- 16:37has done from beginning to end.
- 16:40I know that there is nothing better for
- 16:41people than to be happy and to do
- 16:43good while they live, that each of them
- 16:45may eat and drink and find satisfaction in
- 16:47all their toil.
- 16:49This is the gift of God.
- 16:52So there's a lot of layers in Ecclesiastes
- 16:54we don't have time to get into right
- 16:55here, but this particular moment from Ecclesiastes says,
- 16:59God has made everything beautiful.
- 17:01There is a sense of eternity in our
- 17:03experience, and how do we live that out?
- 17:04We live it out in our bodies.
- 17:05We eat, we drink with our bodies, and
- 17:07we do toil with our bodies, and all
- 17:09of that is a gift of God.
- 17:12And I think we can take those verses
- 17:13from Ecclesiastes just at face value.
- 17:15They're like, yes, all of that is a
- 17:17gift of God.
- 17:17That's how he meant for it to be.
- 17:19There's inherent dignity in who we are as
- 17:22embodied creatures whenever we do our work.
- 17:25And it's when we see our bodies as
- 17:27a gift of God that we're able to
- 17:29do our work with humility and with dignity
- 17:31every day.
- 17:35Lord Jesus, thank you for coming into our
- 17:37world in a body.
- 17:39Thank you for dignifying our bodies.
- 17:41Thank you for creating and sustaining us in
- 17:43the first place as embodied creatures with a
- 17:46nefesh and a body and a soul all
- 17:48together.
- 17:51Show us how to be at home in
- 17:52our own bodies, how to welcome your Holy
- 17:54Spirit into our bodily experience so that we
- 17:58can do our work with humility, with dignity,
- 18:02and with you.
- 18:04Jesus, do your work in us as we
- 18:06do our work with you.
- 18:12Thanks for listening.
