- 0:35This is Gracelyn Keller with the Becker's Healthcare
- 0:37Podcast, and we're recording live at the thirty
- 0:39first annual business and operations of ASCs.
- 0:42I'm currently joined by Tara Goodyoung, who is
- 0:45the CEO at PDI Surgery Center. So thanks
- 0:47for being here. I'll have you kick us
- 0:49off by sharing a little bit more about
- 0:50yourself and your work in the ASC space.
- 0:53Thanks for having me. Really appreciate it. Becker's
- 0:55is one of my favorite conferences to attend.
- 0:59A little about myself. So forty two years
- 1:02in health care in the last twenty in
- 1:04leadership,
- 1:05have run different ambulatory
- 1:08surgery center practices
- 1:10with maxillofacial
- 1:12oral surgery,
- 1:13plastics,
- 1:15and now currently
- 1:16in pediatrics for pediatric dental oral reconstruction.
- 1:21Wonderful.
- 1:22Well, let's start our conversation with the ASC
- 1:24market
- 1:25Because in The US, this is projected to
- 1:27reach $60,800,000,000
- 1:28by 2030 and continues to experience strong year
- 1:31over year growth. So from your perspective, what
- 1:34are the most significant trends in market forces
- 1:36driving this expansion, and how should ASC leaders
- 1:38be preparing today?
- 1:40One of the biggest influences
- 1:42I see in our ASC space
- 1:45and growth is going to be CMS's
- 1:47continued
- 1:49expansion of outpatient
- 1:51procedures
- 1:52being moved from hospital setting to the ASC
- 1:55setting. Now with that, there's gonna be the
- 1:58expectation
- 1:59of downward pressure on pricing.
- 2:02Problem with that that we'll need to be
- 2:04able to be prepared for is gonna be
- 2:06doing a lot of payer negotiations
- 2:08and knowing what your margins are and what
- 2:11your market is. Just because the shiny new
- 2:14thing for you to possibly be able to
- 2:16do in the ASC
- 2:17doesn't necessarily mean that it'll be profitable.
- 2:20If it's already oversaturated
- 2:22in
- 2:23a shouldering market to you, you may not
- 2:26have room for market share, and it may
- 2:28quickly be a race to the bottom on
- 2:30price
- 2:32rather than pivoting to take a look at
- 2:34where you can deliver the best value
- 2:36customer service for your reputation.
- 2:39Absolutely.
- 2:40And from AI and robotic surgeries to advanced
- 2:42EHR systems,
- 2:44technology remains both a make or break factor
- 2:46and a critical driver of ASC operations at
- 2:48scale. So how do you see deeper tech
- 2:50integration shaping the way ASCs deliver care and
- 2:53manage their business over the next few years?
- 2:56I think you can really start to leverage
- 2:58AI
- 2:59to do many of the menial and tedious
- 3:03repetitive
- 3:03tasks,
- 3:04whether it's helping with managing
- 3:07phone call handling still in a very humanistic
- 3:10sense.
- 3:11I think you'll have less turnover of staff
- 3:13if you have staff that feel like they're
- 3:14doing meaningful work, if AI can do the
- 3:18basic level
- 3:20of receiving and triage of calls than to
- 3:23the human that really needs to handle it.
- 3:26As well, you can load in a lot
- 3:28of your data and have it aggregated
- 3:31rather than spending all of this time putting
- 3:34it into spreadsheets
- 3:35to drill down your own data,
- 3:38make your own pivot tables
- 3:40that's very time consuming.
- 3:42The best thing about what that can bring
- 3:44to the table
- 3:46is AI is really being directed now to
- 3:49integrate with your EHR,
- 3:51which then is a lot less click time
- 3:53for your staff and for your doctors, which
- 3:55has been one of the biggest complaints since
- 3:57EMRs
- 3:58came out.
- 3:59So if you can alleviate
- 4:02some of those bureaucratic
- 4:03frustrations,
- 4:04have people feel like they're doing what they
- 4:06want to do, and it makes a difference.
- 4:09You're gonna have better satisfaction
- 4:11as well. It's gonna free them up to
- 4:13have more of that face to face patient
- 4:15time, which is where your value of customer
- 4:18service and your return
- 4:20patient is going to come from. Because whether
- 4:23it's the employer, the insurance,
- 4:25or the referring provider,
- 4:27if that patient has a good experience,
- 4:29you're gonna get more referrals versus if they
- 4:32express that they had a poor or impersonalized
- 4:35service. There's plenty of other ASCs to choose.
- 4:38Yes. Absolutely.
- 4:39And with 60% of health systems considering ASC
- 4:42joint ventures, and many ASCs are already partnering
- 4:46with systems in their communities,
- 4:48What opportunities do you see for collaboration, whether
- 4:50with providers or vendors, to strengthen patient care
- 4:53and operational efficiency?
- 4:55Collaborating with your vendors is a really great
- 4:58way to know what's out there in the
- 5:00market.
- 5:01They'll hear from others, and they'll have inside
- 5:04information,
- 5:05not the secret information,
- 5:07but you'll have a bigger look on a
- 5:09SWOT wider outside your surrounding market
- 5:12of maybe who's overwhelmed with services they can't
- 5:16deliver, there's a backup,
- 5:18or
- 5:19where a market's already saturated
- 5:21and you may not want to go into
- 5:23because, again, we're looking at the race to
- 5:25the bottom then on price.
- 5:27Your vendors also can collaborate with you to
- 5:31deliver procurement platforms so you can really see
- 5:34your spend,
- 5:35compare your different supply pricing,
- 5:38have great and sustainable
- 5:41supply chain,
- 5:43which we've all discovered during COVID and afterwards
- 5:46that just in time ordering is no longer
- 5:49just in time, and you always really need
- 5:52to have a backup vendor
- 5:54for your mission critical items. And your vendors
- 5:57can help you
- 6:00with negotiating rate
- 6:02and having platforms that give you transparency
- 6:06to see what other vendors are doing, and
- 6:08you can get those vendors to work together
- 6:11to give you better pricing and sustainable
- 6:13supply.
- 6:15And is there anything else that we didn't
- 6:17touch on or any final thoughts you'd like
- 6:19to share as we wrap up the conversation?
- 6:22I think it's really important for us to
- 6:24take a look at, as I mentioned before,
- 6:26not just chasing the shiny new thing. Sometimes
- 6:29it's not always best to be first
- 6:32when a lot of new regulations are rolled
- 6:36out,
- 6:36new procedures are released to outpatient.
- 6:39It still can be a gray area of
- 6:42how it's billed, how it's gonna be reimbursed,
- 6:45how it'll be handled, what's the pre authorization
- 6:48pain points going to be, Because you need
- 6:50to be prepared for all of that, and
- 6:53how will you staff up for
- 6:56the new procedures
- 6:57or the new equipment that needs to be
- 6:59brought on for that and be able to
- 7:02take a look at what are your costs
- 7:04going to be
- 7:06in that front loaded time wherein you are
- 7:08training,
- 7:09investing
- 7:10to be able to finally execute with excellence.
- 7:13Absolutely. Well, Tara, thanks so much for joining
- 7:16me today on the Becker's Healthcare Podcast. Again,
- 7:18we're recording live at the thirty first annual
- 7:20business and operations of ASCs.
- 7:22Thank you for having me.
