- 0:07The New York Yankees faced the New York Mets at Shea Stadium in New York for the annual Mayors Trophy Exhibition Game on May 15, 1975.
- 0:15The Mayors Trophy game was a New York baseball tradition, which originally featured matches between the New York Yankees and the New York Giants, and occasionally the Brooklyn Dodgers.
- 0:24In 1963, six years after the Giants and Dodgers left town, the tradition was revived when the Mets stepped in to face the Yankees.
- 0:32Decades before interleague play was part of the regular season, these games were well received by New Yorkers and played primarily to benefit Sandlock Baseball in New York City.
- 0:40This is the 13th matchup between the Mets and the Yankees, called on the radio featuring announcers Phil Rizzuto, Frank Messer, and Dom Valentino.
- 1:01Good evening everybody and welcome to Shea Stadium in New York. Tonight's the 13th annual Mayors Trophy game between the New York Yankees and the New York Mets. I'll be chatting with my pregame guests. Yankee outfielder Luke Vanella will be back in a moment.
- 1:17Announcing the Spirit of 76 Excursion Fair. Ozark Airlines is getting the Spirit of 76 early by lowering fares in 75 on certain flights in certain areas. The farther you fly, the more you'll save.
- 1:31There are some requirements such as travel days when tickets must be purchased length of stay, but call your professional travel advisor or Ozark Airlines for details of Ozark's Spirit of 76 Excursion Fair.
- 1:53Hi, I'm Joan Hamburg. I'll be talking with you every Monday through Friday from 10 to noon about everything important to all of us. Our visiting experts will help you cope with life in and around the city. Listen to my bargain reviews of restaurants, nightclubs, and everything. Call me at 489-1155.
- 2:21New York Yankees warm up is Luke Vanella, the slugging outfielder of the New York Yankees. Luke, last Friday you were in Oakland and then the ball club had you come back to New York for the Disney spells that you were having. Exactly what happened.
- 2:37Well that's right, Don. Last Friday I visited a doctor in Oakland. He told me that he didn't know exactly what was wrong with me, but he saw a lot of movement in my eyes that proved to him that I was dizzy and he suggested that I come back to New York and see the team doctor.
- 2:56And I did do that. I flew back Sunday and team doctor sent me to Dr. Brookler, which is an ear specialist here in town, and extensive tests were made on me and I think the analysis was that I did have an ear infection that was causing all my problems.
- 3:14Luke, how did this all come about and when did it first start? When did you first notice it? Well, I've had this now for the last two and a half, three weeks. I don't know how it came about. The doctor more or less thought that it might have come from bad cold or sore throat or something and moved up into the inner passages inside my head.
- 3:37But he doesn't really know and I don't know either. I know that about two and a half weeks ago I was eating supper with my wife and I just started getting dizzy and from then on I'd get these spells of dizziness a few times a day and the last few days before I left the club I had them all the time and I just couldn't perform.
- 3:58How about at the plate? Did you ever get a dizzy spell while you were in the batter's box? No, I played two games in Baltimore and I saw the ball quite well. I wasn't feeling well at the time but there was no excuse for not hitting.
- 4:13The only thing that might have bothered me a little bit was the speed of the ball because maybe I didn't judge it as well. But outside of that I saw the ball good and I played two ball games and what gave me more problems than anything was catching fly balls. I wanted to make sure that I was braced every time the ball was hit to me.
- 4:29Luke, please stand by. We'll continue with our pregame guest, Luke Pinnella, outfielder with the Yankees in a moment. We'll be back in a moment.
- 4:37Like many people you may be growing vegetables and fruit to help beat the high cost of food or growing ornamental flowers simply for their beauty.
- 4:47But your flowers, vegetables, and fruit could be attacked and destroyed at any time by aphids, leaf hoppers, flea beetles, and other bugs you may never even have heard of.
- 4:58There are many different insecticides you could buy to combat all those different bugs but you need only one. Spectracide lawn and garden insect control. It's really effective.
- 5:12Spectracide controls a wide range of bugs and can be used on your lawn and shrubs as well as your vegetables, fruit, and flowers. Spectracide is available in four easy to use forms. Liquid concentrate, aerosol spray, garden dust, and granular for use only on lawns. Spectracide, the all purpose insecticide.
- 5:38Back to yourself and the hitting and of course you were one of the leading hitters in the American League last season and there's an old saying that everybody wears out that cream comes to the top and I'm sure it's going to in your case because you're a real good hitter.
- 5:54There are some other ball players in the club that are undergoing the same problem. What happens when you get into a slump like this?
- 6:01Well, a lot of things really happen. Maybe players start pressing a little bit too much. Maybe they start thinking a little bit too much of the problem and they're not watching the ball. More or less worried about the hands and feet and so forth.
- 6:16But it's tough. When you're not hitting a baseball you're pressing a little more than you usually do when you're hitting the ball well at home plate and you say, well I have to get a base hit this time and I have to get a base hit and sooner or later things get a little worse.
- 6:31But I think that you made a correct statement. There is a lot of ability on this ball club and even though the players as a whole haven't performed there are quite a few players that are playing quite well. The talent is here and usually over the course of the summer the people that have done well and played well are going to play well again.
- 6:51Lou, you're physically okay now though. The ear infection is gone and you're ready to go. Well I would say it's gone but I would say that it's subsided quite a bit. I feel much better and I talked to the doctor this morning and he told me to work out the night and if I feel fine I can start playing over the weekend if the manager wants me to.
- 7:12Well we certainly hope we see you in that lineup real soon. Lou, the very best of luck to yourself and the Yankees. Thank you doctor, talking to you. We'll be back in a moment.
- 7:21Joe Namath, Dick Allen, Muhammad Ali, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Catfish Hunter, Phil Esposito, Bobby Hull, Dave Cowens, Earl Monroe, Dave Schultz. Those names and hundreds others mean sports excitement and controversy. If you'll give me a call we'll talk about them and two of them right here on WMCA. Monday through Friday from 7 to 10, Saturday afternoons from 3 to 8.
- 7:45WMCA New York, New York.
- 7:53Announcing the spirit of 76 Excursion Fair. Ozark Airlines is getting the spirit of 76 early by lowering fares in 75 on certain flights in certain areas. The farther you fly the more you'll save.

- 8:26The Yankees and the New York Mets here at Shea Stadium in the 13th annual Mears Trophy game. And tonight's game finds both teams having won six games. The Mets will be pitching George Stone. He has been pitching in the Mets extended spring training program in St. Petersburg, Florida.
- 8:44He pitched for the Mets against the United States Military Academy at West Point last Monday on May 5th and allowed one hit in four innings of pitching. He retired the last 11 batters. Since then he's made one pitching appearance in Florida, pitching one hitless inning last Saturday before the game was called because of rain.
- 9:02He was placed on the disabled list on April 1st and had been on the disabled list from August the 9th of last season until the end of the 1974 season. Although the Yankees have called up Bob Johnson from Syracuse and Ken Clay from West Haven, the starter for the Yankees tonight will be Mike Wallace.
- 9:25Wallace does not have any record. He has two appearances and he has pitched 4.1 innings of pitching, allowed 10 hits, seven runs. All seven have been earned. And we're going to be back very shortly with the start of the game. Stay tuned for New York Yankee baseball.
- 9:55When it's time to play ball, get up the home plate and bat against inflation by shopping in the Cross County Center in Yonkers. Pile up a winning score in shopping values throughout Cross County's famous stores.
- 10:08Stores like Gimbals, Wanamaker, Wallachs, Lubens, Wallace Corning, Lerner Shops, Franklin Simon, Paperback Booksmiths, Woolworths, Walgreens, and many, many more. Big stores and little stores, specialty shops and fashion boutiques like the Gap and Roman.
- 10:26Restaurants like Wilskers and the Red Coach Grill, finance supermarkets, service stores, a great team of merchants determined to give you more of everything, especially value and savings. Enjoy Yankee-style bargains in the heart of Yankee country.
- 10:42The Cross County Shopping Center in Yonkers, where the New York thruway meets the Cross County Parkway.
- 10:49This is Roy White of the New York Yankees. When I'm not playing ball, I listen to John Sterling right here on WMCA New York.
- 11:14Today's game is brought to you by the New York State Vacation Land, your guide to the New York State vacation of your life.
- 11:21By the Brewers of Schaeffer Beer as another major event in the Schaeffer Circle of Sports.
- 11:26And by Getty Premium, the gasoline that sells for 2 to 2 and 1 half cents less per gallon than most other major premiums.
- 11:34And by the New York, New Jersey Fairfield County Dodge Board. We're now offering $200 cash rebates on Dodge darts and vans.
- 11:57Well hi everybody, welcome back to Schaeffer Stadium. This is Phil Rizzuto along with Don Valentino, Frank Messer. Bill White has the night off tonight, but we're all here to help pay tribute to the Sandlot kids of the metropolitan area.
- 12:11And these games between the Mets and the Yankees, the Mayors Trophy games, benefit those youngsters.
- 12:17And Don Valentino having played many, many games in the Sandlots of New York, I can appreciate what they're doing for the kids.
- 12:24It's amazing the amount of money that has been raised Bill. $1,360,000 plus. That's a lot of money.
- 12:33That's a lot of money and it goes to a great cause. And Don, it's good to be back with you again.
- 12:37I know you rooted hard. I know we all did out in the West Coast rooting for those Islanders and they almost made it.
- 12:43They sure did and they're going to be here on Saturday night. They'll be honored before the game and fill the Western trip for the Yankees that just concluded.
- 12:52In fact, the overall trip, two and eight. Anything in particular wrong, do you think?
- 12:57Well, the only thing that was wrong is that they were on the losing end of the score and they were in every ballgame except one.
- 13:03That was the game where Milwaukee really creamed them, if you remember.
- 13:07But in every other ballgame, they were in the game until the final out of the ballgame.
- 13:11And once again, it was the fact they couldn't get that one key hit to break the game wide open.
- 13:16Bobby Bonds looks like he's coming out of it. He's starting to hit the ball a little more solid. And once he does, I think it'll be a different story.
- 13:24You know, you've been stressing that and since you have been stressing the clutch hit, the key hit, you sort of look for things.
- 13:34And it really is stuck in my craw. And I was going through the Oakland press guy and I got to Sal Bando who hit 243 last year.
- 13:44Yet had 103 RBIs and finished second in the league. And Oakland finished second to last in hitting in the league.
- 13:51And yet one of the top teams at RBIs. And that must be the reason they won.
- 13:55Exactly right, Don. They get the big hit when they need it. And somebody different every day would do it for that club.
- 14:02A Reggie Jackson, a Sal Bando, Joe Rudy, Gene Tennant. And that's what they're waiting for the Yankees.
- 14:07And what's hurting the Yankees right now is the fact that Ronnie Bloomberg can't swing a bat.
- 14:11Oh, that's got to hurt with his stick. Phil, here are the lineups for tonight's game.
- 14:16For the New York Mets, Mike Phillips will be a shortstop leading off. Felix Miano second base batting second.
- 14:23Batting third in center field, Del Unshir in right field batting fourth, Rusty Stobbs.
- 14:28John Milder will be at first base batting fifth. At third base, Wayne Garrett. He'll bat sixth.
- 14:33Dave Kingman will bat seventh and play left field. John Stearns will be behind the plate batting eighth.
- 14:39And George Stone will be on the mound. For the Yankees, Roy White will lead off and play in left field.
- 14:45In center field batting second, Elliot Maddox. In right field, Bobby Bonds batting third.
- 14:50Chris Chambliss will bat fourth and he will be at first base.
- 14:55Walt Williams will be at third base batting fifth. Rick Dempsey behind the plate batting sixth.
- 15:00At shortstop batting seventh, Jim Mason.
- 15:04Fred Stanley will be at second base batting eighth. And Mike Wallace will be on the mound for the Yankees.
- 15:11Let's pause 15 seconds for a statement of vacation. This is the New York Yankee Baseball Network.
- 15:17Music.
- 15:36Good crowd here again tonight, Phil. And unfortunately, we've had some threatening skies, but it does look like it's going to be a fine evening.
- 15:45You know, Dom, I had thought this was the earliest that a Mayors Trophy game had ever been played,
- 15:52but I see on May the 3rd, 1965 at Yankee Stadium, they had played one. And this is the second earliest game.
- 15:59They also have one on May the 10th at Shea Stadium here. And this could possibly be the smallest crowd,
- 16:07and I was thinking because it was so early in the year, and with both the Yankees and the Mets not playing up to their potential right now,
- 16:14the interest isn't there, but they're coming in and it could be a surprising crowd.
- 16:19Jim Catfish Hunter. Jim is really living up to the advance billing, isn't he? He's really pitching.
- 16:25I'd say the Yankees are very happy now that they made that investment in Catfish because he is pitching now,
- 16:31especially out in Oakland. And everybody said, well, he's so used to pitching out there.
- 16:35And that was a funny thing, Dom, because the interesting thing in the paper, interviewing the ballplayers for Oakland who had played with Catfish,
- 16:43and then interviewing Catfish to see who would have the advantage. In other words, Gene Tennis, who caught Catfish in almost all his games,
- 16:51struck out all three times against him. He said, that son of a gun changed his style of pitching against him.
- 16:56Is that right? So Catfish, you know, is a smart pitcher as well as an excellent pitcher.
- 17:00And I'm sure before the year is over, it'll be between 25 and 30 wins per hunter.
- 17:05That's good to hear. Of course, the two wins the Yankees have in the last 10 belong to Catfish Hunter,
- 17:12but the Yankees now have a good long home stand and with that possibly can turn it around.
- 17:18Well, a lot of times when you get home, you're playing a lot better. You're on a road trip. Things are going bad.
- 17:24You can't wait to get back with all the loyal fans here. And they are tonight.
- 17:28They're just about split down the middle, Mets and Yankees. And that always makes for a lot of excitement.
- 17:34And look who's ambling up to home plate. Peter Lawrence, Yogi Berra.
- 17:40And nobody's got to walk like Yogi except Henry Armetta. You remember Henry Armetta in the movies?
- 17:44No, you're a little too young, Don. Too young for that film. Too young.
- 17:47But anyway, Henry had one shoulder that dipped down and one knee that went to right field and one to left.
- 17:52And that's the way Yogi walks. You know, he had an amazing career when I ever looked up all the stats for Yogi.
- 18:00What a ball player. The greatest clutch ball player I think that I've ever played with or against.
- 18:05When I say clutch, when the chips were down and you needed a hit or when you had to throw somebody out,
- 18:11Yogi would be the man to do it. It seemed like he would not play up to his best unless there was a clutch situation.
- 18:18I got to ask you, Phil, the youngster that came up to the booth in Milwaukee and showed you the Phil Rizzuto glove,
- 18:25who wouldn't take money but wanted two gloves autographed by Yogi Berra. Have you told Yogi yet?
- 18:30No, I haven't had a chance. As a matter of fact, I didn't get to see him tonight, but I'm sure going to see him before we see that kid in Milwaukee again.
- 18:37Because that will be something a Phil Rizzuto catcher's glove.
- 18:40That's going to be a classic.
- 18:42Yeah, the one and only.
- 18:44And of course, Yogi has done an outstanding job and he and a man I know you think so highly of, Joe McCarthy, if I'm not mistaken, are the only two to have won pennants in both leagues.
- 18:56That's right. Now the thing I like about Yogi, and you can say the same thing for Bill Burton, they don't panic when things go bad.
- 19:04The worst thing a manager can do is suddenly push the panic button, start making changes, start making shifts, getting on his players and upsetting them.
- 19:13And this way if you keep calm and you do come out of it, then they've got a lot more respect for you and they play a little harder for you.
- 19:19The Mets, of course, still have a real shot in their division of the National League. The season is very, very early.
- 19:27And I see that Dave Kingman is really coming along for the Mets.
- 19:32Well, that was a big deal. The Mets needed some power and they've got it with Kingman.
- 19:35And as we mentioned before, Dom, you and I, some of the best deals are the deals that were not made.
- 19:41For the Mets, it was Rusty Stobb. For the Yankees, it was Roy White.
- 19:44Both of them having great starts. Roy White, tremendous on base average and hitting the long ball occasionally, but when it's needed.
- 19:53And stealing bases at a pace just under Bobby Bond. So by not getting rid of Roy White, they've, and especially with Lou Pennella being injured.
- 20:02When you say injured, he has that in your interview with Lou, which was very interesting before the game.
- 20:08He was quite upset, but now that he knows what the trouble is, his mind is much more at ease.
- 20:14It's got to be, Phil, you've gone through it so many times and you always think the worst, don't you?
- 20:21Oh, yes, you've got to. Your mind is sometimes a terrible thing. It runs away with you.
- 20:26And in Lou's case, he had no idea what was troubling him. He'd feel good for a couple of days and then feel bad for a couple of days.
- 20:33And that's the worst feeling in the world. You want to get to the root of the trouble and then maybe you can eliminate it.
- 20:39Well, the ball game is being held up a little bit. We'll check the scoreboard for you.
- 20:46Kansas City is at Boston after two innings. There's no score. Cleveland and Minnesota, we have no report.
- 20:53And the Milwaukee Brewers and the Texas Rangers are two to two.
- 20:59Over in the National League, the Chicago Cubs defeated Houston four to two this afternoon in Atlanta.
- 21:07Got by Montreal eight to seven. And in the ninth inning, Cincinnati leads Philadelphia three to two.
- 21:16Here it's the Mayor's Trophy Game, the 13th annual, and each team has won six games.
- 21:23And Phil Rizzuto, an exhibition game. I know it may not be as big as a regular season game, but the guys work hard, don't they?
- 21:31I want to tell you, this game means as much to both the Mets and the Yankees and to the fans of the Mets and the Yankees as any important game they'll play this year.
- 21:41This can continue right through the winter. The Hot Stove League trying to decide which is the better team.
- 21:48And now, join us for the National Anthem.
- 22:18The National Anthem.
- 22:48The National Anthem.
- 22:52The National Anthem.
- 22:56The National Anthem.
- 23:03The National Anthem.
- 23:15Well, Phil, on Saturday night, the Yankees are going to be honoring the New York Islanders in a special presentation.
- 23:23And Phil, the many years I've been involved as a broadcaster, I must admit, I have never seen a group of athletes work so hard, put so much effort into one particular project, as these youngsters did for the Islanders.
- 23:38And of course, I know you're very proud of them, all of New York is, and they should be. They did a great job.
- 23:43An exceptional job, a young team that wanted to play and wanted to win so badly for Al Arbor, who you know much better than I, but everything I've heard about Al Arbor has been great.
- 23:54And when you got a coach like that, you want to play your heart out, the Islanders did.
- 23:58And they captured the fancy, I think, everybody all over the United States, because when we were on the West Coast, everybody wanted to know how the Islanders were doing.
- 24:07They had a TV going in the third game, which the Islanders pulled out 2 to 1, and it was great.
- 24:17Well, Phil, getting set now is George Stone. Here's a guy that's had trouble with the same type of ailment as Mel Stottlemeyer, isn't it?
- 24:27Yes, that's that rotary cuff. If you get an injury to that, you tear the muscle right around the shoulder. Not only is it very painful, but you cannot throw as hard as you would like.
- 24:39And even right now, with Stone loosening up, kind of looks like he's aiming the ball. You don't like to see any pitcher get an injury like that.
- 24:47You know who had that same type of injury and had to hang him up? Don Drysdale. I didn't realize that.
- 24:52The exact same injury. And he said it was so painful that he had to take every hour, six, either aspirin or Darvan or something, and you still couldn't kill the pain, but it would be a little bit more bearable.
- 25:06But all you're doing is making the tear a little bigger. And so he said when he went to the doctor, the doctor told him, as he did Mel Stottlemeyer, one day you're not going to be able to raise your arm to comb your hair.
- 25:18And that's when he decided to call it quits. Man, that ought to tell you something right there. And Stone, of course, would make a big difference to Yogi's ball club, wouldn't he?
- 25:27George Stone, he'd make a big difference to the Mets, wouldn't he? Oh, absolutely. Every team needs that fourth starter, and the Mets haven't quite found him yet.
- 25:35Though their big three right now looks like they've turned around Tom Siva, who along with Catfish Hunter and Nolan Ryan, I think are the best pitchers in the big leagues.
- 25:43Even though there are a couple others have won seven ballgames, some of the Dodger fans will give you arguments with Don Sutton.
- 25:51But Siva, Matlack and Kuzmin have come around. I'm happy for Yogi to see that.
- 25:57All right, the ballgame getting ready to start. And listen to this crowd. You know, that's something you miss on the road, Dom.
- 26:04The other crowds are so polite. You can hear a pin drop, but here is excitement on every pitch, and I miss it.
- 26:11When you're from New York, there's no place like New York. The first pitch to Roy White is a curve low. No, it's not.
- 26:18I got to watch these National League umpires. That's Doug Harvey behind the plate.
- 26:22Hank Saw, a former American League umpire at first, and Dutch Renick at third.
- 26:27Blowing away, that's one on one.
- 26:32National League was such a great difference in their style of umpiring. They stand between the catcher and the batter.
- 26:39The left-hander kicks and the pitch is over the outside corner.
- 26:47So it's a ball and two strikes on Roy White. And Roy had an excellent trip out to the West Coast.
- 26:56A foul went back into the crowd, and there's the first souvenir of the night.
- 27:02In hockey, when the puck goes in the stands, Dom, they allow to keep it? Yes.
- 27:06Oh, okay. Because I notice in tennis, they've got to throw the ball back. I can't believe that.
- 27:11Well, hehehe.
- 27:15All right, Stone gets the sign. John Stern's the rookie doing the catching tonight.
- 27:21Big curve is high, two and two.
- 27:29Wayne Garrett deep at third, not too far from the line.
- 27:34The two-two pitch, a curve swing, and a missed strike three.
- 27:38Took just a little bit off, and Roy White is struck out.
- 27:43And I notice Roy White almost started for the first base dugout, Dom, because that's where the Yankees normally have their dugout.
- 27:50It's got to be a little strange for them, being at a different location for this one ball game.
- 27:55It is. It makes a big difference. Here's Elliott Maddox, right up there with Roy White having a great year.
- 28:00Boy, he and White have been getting on a lot for those men coming up and backing them.
- 28:05Outside, ball one. Dick Hauser coaching at third.
- 28:10Elston Howard over at first.
- 28:16Stone winds, and the curve is high, ball two, two and nothing.
- 28:20Elliott hitting three thirty-nine. Roy White batting three twenty-nine.
- 28:26And both of them have a tremendous on-base average.
- 28:31The two-oh pitch, swing and a miss, two and one.
- 28:40This is a big, big ball game, Dom, for this kid, George Stone, as you mentioned.
- 28:44This is a real showcase for him tonight. Yep.
- 28:47The two-one pitch, a little high, three and one.
- 28:50You know, Phil, now Elliott got hurt, got hit on the wrist. Yep.
- 28:54But I mean, he came right back, didn't he? Came right back. He could have stayed out.
- 28:57They expected him to be out for about three to four days.
- 29:00Came right back the next day. He comes to play.
- 29:03High ball four and Maddox is on.
- 29:09And that'll bring up Bobby Bond.
- 29:13Bobby drove in the winning run in that game last night against the California Angels with a long sacrifice fly.
- 29:23Bobby batting just two eleven, but leading the Yankees in runs batted in with twenty.
- 29:32Fairman Munson has nineteen.
- 29:36He's going to be all right, Phil, I'm telling you.
- 29:38I know you've been telling me that, Dom, and I appreciate it because I like to be comforted.
- 29:44The pitch to Bond, swing and a miss, strike one.
- 29:47And you know, Phil, I was going through the guy, the baseball guy, Reggie Jackson now.
- 29:52Not a bad hitter, led the league in strikeouts for four straight seasons.
- 29:55Right. I think he's got the record.
- 29:58Yeah. One hundred and seventy one, is it?
- 30:00It's a lot of whiffs.
- 30:03Don't set. Maddox leads away. The pitch to Bond change up inside one on one.
- 30:18Milder holding the bag.
- 30:22Ground ball is short. Perfect double play ball.
- 30:24Phillips to Mian, back to first. Oh, no.
- 30:27I forgot about the speed of Bobby Bond.
- 30:31Man, can he fly? He really takes off.
- 30:34And that made the difference, and Bobby on it first.
- 30:39I tell you, I said perfect double play ball.
- 30:41And if there ever was one, that was it.
- 30:43He hit a bullet one hopper to the shortstop.
- 30:45Who got rid of the ball and Mian, a great pivot man, got rid of it in a hurry.
- 30:49But Bond's easily beat his throw to first.
- 30:52And it brings up Chris Chambliss.
- 30:55Two out, Bond's at first.
- 30:59Curve is a little high, ball one.
- 31:02Chambliss hitting 272 on the air.
- 31:08That's six doubles and a triple, no homers.
- 31:12Two men are out, no score.
- 31:16A fly ball to center field, moving back is Dellanser.
- 31:20He's there and has it.
- 31:23For the Yankees, no runs, no hits, no errors.
- 31:26A man left.
- 31:27And in the middle of the first, the Yankees, nothing in the Mets coming to bat.
- 31:31For some, only greatness is good enough.
- 31:43They dream bigger, set their sights higher, and work a lot harder.
- 31:47The brewers of Schaeffer beer have worked their dreams since 1842,
- 31:51perfecting a beer with a rare quality of flavor that never fades.
- 31:56Schaeffer is the one, one beer to have when you're having more than one, more than one.
- 32:05Schaeffer pleasure does obey even when your thirst is done.
- 32:12Today among America's great premium lagers, the one that came first is still the one.
- 32:18The one that always delivers, the one that comes through glass after glass.
- 32:24Schaeffer is the one, one beer to have when you're having more than one.
- 32:36A reminder, the very exciting Oakland A's will be here tomorrow night
- 32:40for a three-game weekend series.
- 32:43And Bill Rizzotto, the A's look as tough as ever, don't they?
- 32:47Same kind of a ball club, Don.
- 32:49That's won them three consecutive world championships.
- 32:52They don't scare you, but all of a sudden somebody hits a long ball and suddenly you're behind.
- 32:58Now you mentioned you brought out a good point.
- 33:01You look at their team batting average, they're next to last in the league last year,
- 33:06in the American League Western, 247.
- 33:08Unbelievable.
- 33:10They've played together so long, they get that clutch base hit, the big stolen base.
- 33:17And I'd say the team you're going to be excited about when they come to Yankee Stadium,
- 33:21and fans should too, California Angels.
- 33:30All right, Mike Phillips, youngster acquired from San Francisco,
- 33:33ground ball, nice play by Chambliss, picks it up and throws it over the head of Wallace.
- 33:38Wallace was late covering, what a play by Chambliss.
- 33:42He tried to lead Wallace, but threw it over his head, that'll be a base hit.
- 33:46The first pitch thrown by Mike Wallace, and Chambliss dove to his right,
- 33:51got his glove on and knocked it down, they almost got him.
- 33:55So as Don, you mentioned this might be an exhibition game, but they're playing that way.
- 33:59They sure are.
- 34:01You've got to put a big star next to that one, Phil, we'll have to put him in contention.
- 34:05You can't quite do it because they didn't make the play.
- 34:07Right, right.
- 34:11By Felix Mian, tough little man with that bat, he chokes up to the trademark,
- 34:17a lot like Jerry Coleman did.
- 34:25Chris Chambliss holds the bag against Mike Phillips.
- 34:29Pitch by Wallace is right down the middle, strike call.
- 34:36Felix Mian batting 233, has eight doubles, a triple and a homer on the air.
- 34:43Excellent hit and run man, good butter.
- 34:45Little Walt Williams even with the bag at third, Phillips leads away.
- 34:50Pitch by Wallace is foul on the left of the plate, strike two.
- 34:55Remember Walt Williams telling us Don that he broke in as a third baseman?
- 34:59You had asked him what position he thought that he was most comfortable at,
- 35:04I remember that and he's his third baseman, what I broke in on.
- 35:06So we're getting a chance to see him, there's no doubt he's got the quickness.
- 35:13Chambliss holds the bag against Phillips.
- 35:18On deck, Dylan, Wallace to the belt.
- 35:22The kick and the pitch fouled off the plate, bounced up and hit Mian on the arm.
- 35:30You know what always intrigues me is when a punch hitter like Mian that doesn't hit the long ball,
- 35:37the outfield seems to be close, the infield seems to be back
- 35:40and you wonder how he's going to get the ball in there for Hitler.
- 35:43That's right, it's very difficult but when you're hitting the ball hard
- 35:46and he's got to hit the ball solid with a little bit of bat he's got left after choking way up.
- 35:53Pitch, ground ball to second, perfect double play.
- 35:55Stanley steps on the big off, off, throw to first, not in time.
- 35:59Stanley delayed that fraction of a second by not flipping to Mason
- 36:04and it allowed Mian to beat his throw to first base.
- 36:07Stanley was not as close to second as he thought.
- 36:10So, of course the second base Mike Phillips safe on the field is Joyce Felix Mian.
- 36:19And now Dell answer.
- 36:21Phil, the standard to go by, if you can you try to throw rather than take it yourself.
- 36:27The only time if the shortstop's coming and moving towards the bed.
- 36:31But that time Stanley was moving away from the play and then had to throw back.
- 36:36Buncher takes a pitch, eyeball one.
- 36:40Russ Stanley has been playing shortstop and doing a great job.
- 36:43He made some outstanding plays in Oakland and in California.
- 36:52Whenever you move from the left side of the infield or the right side of the infield it becomes strange.
- 36:56Throw to first base almost a balk but he got away with it.
- 37:02You're looking at the ball coming at you from a different angle.
- 37:05Yes, and it moves differently.
- 37:11Left hander Mike Wallace sets.
- 37:15Pitches bounce to first, Chambliss goes to Mason one.
- 37:18Back to first base, safe at first base.
- 37:21Again they just missed the double play.
- 37:24Good play from Chambliss to Mason.
- 37:27And Mason's return throw right on the money but Unce beat the throw.
- 37:32So they're a two away and the batter now Rusty Starr.
- 37:47Pretty good credentials there Dominic.
- 37:49Twenty-three hits and twenty-one runs batted in.
- 37:52He can swing that bat.
- 37:54Strike one.
- 37:56What is it they used to call him in Montreal? La Grande?
- 38:00La Grande.
- 38:02Yeah right, right that was it.
- 38:04Supposed to be redhead.
- 38:09He was a big favorite, has always been a big favorite wherever he's played.
- 38:13Pitch to stop, line drive.
- 38:15And base hit the right set up and going to third on Zematic's throw.
- 38:22He's out at third base on a great throw and just a great tag by little Walt Williams.
- 38:28Did you see that quick tag?
- 38:30Beautiful, what a throw.
- 38:32All the way around just a fantastic play.
- 38:39Well the score at the end of one the Yankees nothing in the midst nothing.
- 38:44One time at a polio time with creamy smooth polio ricotta and easy to slice quick to mouth polio mozzarella.
- 38:51They've been New York's favorite for over 75 years.
- 38:54But you've only just begun to know polio because now you can liven up your favorite pizza or antipasto with polio pepperoni, polio anchovies, polio mushrooms, as well as polio sweet slice red and green peppers.
- 39:07Or how about adding polio black olives to that antipasto or to that special toss green salad.
- 39:13With warm Italian bread and creamy polio butter.
- 39:16Now more than ever polio has all you need to put real Italian food on your table.
- 39:23Well you live in line.
- 39:25I knew AMCO does millions of American cars but I never knew they worked on foreign cars too if I only owned a Toyota.
- 39:34You're gonna be surprised but don't be surprised by the nice little extras at AMCO.
- 39:39They've serviced four million transmissions.
- 39:42They do things right.
- 39:43AMCO.
- 39:44Double A.
- 39:45MCO.
- 39:47If you have or suspect transmission trouble, take your car to one of the AMCO transmission centers in the Greater New York area.
- 39:54Their famous 19 point multi-check is free.
- 39:57They do things right.
- 40:07And we'll pick that up in a moment.
- 40:09I don't want to sound too brilliant but as soon as he turns around Phil we'll get there.
- 40:17Number 12.
- 40:19Right now we find out who number 12 is.
- 40:22You got a scorecard doctor?
- 40:24We're really getting down to the basics.
- 40:27It is Jack Heidemann.
- 40:30Now Heidemann normally is shortstop.
- 40:33And this way the managers, both Yogi Berra and Bill Verdon get a chance to see what their shortstops can do playing second.
- 40:41Little Walt Williams about it.
- 40:43The pitch is low ball one.
- 40:46Walt Williams batting 450.
- 40:49Already got nine hits all last year he had but six.
- 40:54Stone's pitch is high ball two, two nothing.
- 40:57No score. Top of the second.
- 40:59The Yankees in the midst.
- 41:00The mayor's trophy game.
- 41:06It'll be Williams Dempsey and Mason.
- 41:13Stone's pitch is low ball three.
- 41:15Williams taking all the way.
- 41:18They play Walt straight away in the outfield.
- 41:21Three-oh pitch.
- 41:22Ball four.
- 41:23Williams is on.
- 41:24Second walk given up by Stone.
- 41:27And I guess that's something you got to expect Dom.
- 41:29He hasn't been out there in so long.
- 41:31Be a little strange.
- 41:32It's got to be hard.
- 41:33It's got to be hard.
- 41:34The pressure's got to be on him too.
- 41:36Oh yes.
- 41:37He knows.
- 41:38That's for sure.
- 41:39He knows.
- 41:40He knows.
- 41:41He knows.
- 41:42He knows.
- 41:43He knows.
- 41:44He knows.
- 41:45He knows.
- 41:46That's for sure.
- 41:48Here's Rick Dempsey and what a job he's doing.
- 41:50Batting 667.
- 41:52He's four for six on the air.
- 41:54The only two times they got him out he hit the ball right on the nose.
- 41:57Used mostly as a pinch hitter.
- 42:00Pitch to Dempsey is a curve low ball one.
- 42:03Good receiver isn't he Phil?
- 42:05Yes he is.
- 42:06Got a great throwing arm although Monson put on some show against the Angels.
- 42:11Well of course he's great anyway.
- 42:12Everybody knows it's tough to be in back of an all-star isn't it?
- 42:15Yep.
- 42:18Stone kicks and delivers it's high outside ball two to nothing.
- 42:22Kind of like when you were performing so brilliantly in Yogi Berra and you had Charlie Silvera and
- 42:28never got off the bench did he?
- 42:29Well the Yankees had so many catches.
- 42:31You had Silvera, Hough, Gus Triandos.
- 42:36Quite a few others that were eventually sold to other teams.
- 42:40The right place at the right time is so true.
- 42:42You got to be there.
- 42:44So it's two and nothing to Dempsey.
- 42:46Nobody out in the top of the second has no score.
- 42:53Stone sets his pitch low ball three.
- 42:56Three and nothing.
- 42:57Looks like that game is a final now Dom.
- 43:00Milwaukee won it.
- 43:01Yep three to two.
- 43:05Son of a gun they're hanging in there Milwaukee.
- 43:08That's that good young team there right on top of the American League East.
- 43:12Three and all the count.
- 43:14There's a strike three and one.
- 43:16You mentioned that the curfew had curtailed the game at two two so they.
- 43:21Yep and they called it at the end of 15 and started over the night.
- 43:26And they play it before their regularly scheduled game.
- 43:32Williams leads away.
- 43:33See he's going.
- 43:34The pitch to Dempsey lying to right field.
- 43:36But right there Rusty Stobb and Williams better get back.
- 43:39Stobb fires it in not in time.
- 43:41As Walt Williams slides back in a first.
- 43:44Dempsey again hitting the ball right on the nose a line drive at Stobb.
- 43:50One away and Jim Mason.
- 43:53And this might be the spot for Mason that come out of his slump Dom.
- 43:57Bill Burden I think everybody agrees did the right thing.
- 44:01He took the pressure off Jim.
- 44:03You know Bill has got a great affinity to the entire situation.
- 44:08I think that was a great move and this will relax Mason a little bit.
- 44:12It'll relax him and also make him like a tiger when he does eventually get back in the starting lineup.
- 44:19Williams at first one out pitch to Mason is outside ball one.
- 44:24You do worry when you're not on that lineup every day.
- 44:28Especially when you got a family as most of the ballplayers have and Jim Mason does.
- 44:34You know you got to feed and close those kids.
- 44:39The kick and the pitch bounce to the first base.
- 44:41Milner goes to second for one.
- 44:43Back to first double play.
- 44:47Well executed.
- 44:48Three six three double play.
- 44:50Nothing across and in the middle of the second inning the Yankees nothing the Mets nothing.
- 44:57On July 1st 1974 after years of selling only one kind of gasoline premium the Getty Oil Company introduced a new gasoline.
- 45:09Getty No Lead the kind of gasoline most 1971 through 1974 cars can run on and most 1975 cars have to run on.
- 45:19Like most oil companies we at Getty expected our No Lead to account for only five to ten percent of our sales.
- 45:27But we had a surprise.
- 45:29We're selling twice as much Getty No Lead as we thought.
- 45:32Maybe it's because getting No Lead is a little bit better than a No Lead has to be.
- 45:37So it gave people the kind of performance they wanted and they gave us their business.
- 45:42Remember don't waste gasoline.
- 45:45But when you do drive fill up with Getty premium or No Lead.
- 45:51Getty we've got what's best for your car.
- 46:04Let's pause 15 seconds for a station notification.
- 46:06This is the New York Yankee baseball network.
- 46:12This is WMCA New York the sex information service is open right now.
- 46:17Call them for advice at 586-6666.
- 46:25John Milner leads it off for the Mets in the bottom of the second.
- 46:28Wallace's pitch swing and a miss strike one he tried to check it couldn't do it.
- 46:33Milner hitting 217 now he has four doubles three homers and eleven runs batted in.
- 46:40Milner, Stobb, Kingman and Joe Torreys got to supply the power for this club that pitches inside.
- 46:48One on one.
- 46:55Milner's strong left hand batter holds those arms well away from the body swings and misses strike two.
- 47:01Good slider by Mike Wallace.
- 47:06Fred Stanley is about two steps back on the outfield grass at second base.
- 47:12And the outfield around towards right and deep.
- 47:16Talk about natural and look at Maddox out there.
- 47:20His legs crossed.
- 47:21Now he's ready though and it's outside.
- 47:24Two and two.
- 47:25Boy has he developed and developed.
- 47:27He's brilliant.
- 47:28Excellent.
- 47:29Unbelievable.
- 47:31All players have different ways of relaxing just before the pitch.
- 47:34And it's interesting to watch them line drive base hit to right field between first and second Bobby Bonds up with it.
- 47:42That's the third base hit for the Mets.
- 47:46But in the first inning great throw by Maddox and a beautiful tag by Walt Williams nipping Dell answer at third snuffed out a rally.
- 47:55And now Wayne Garrett.
- 47:58Garrett hitting to seventy five a double a triple a homer and four runs batted in.
- 48:05Pitch to Garrett bounce a foul outside of first.
- 48:10Eddie O's coaches at third for Yogi Berra's Mets and at first base Roy McMillan.
- 48:25Nobody out.
- 48:26No score.
- 48:28Wallace kicks delivers line drive base hit to Rinaldo and he's got an easy double play.
- 48:34Holy cow.
- 48:36Bobby Bonds got a shoestringer and another ball hit like a bullet and Milner and I thought it was a base hit.
- 48:44But Dominic Valentino didn't tell him down that when Bonds is out there you notice how easy he made that look.
- 48:50I'm going to sound like his agent but I just think he's such a great athlete with that great speed.
- 48:56You notice the throw right on the money right after the catch.
- 49:00I'm going to have to hold up more.
- 49:01I couldn't believe he gets an apple.
- 49:03Just like the other night I didn't think North was going to make that catch in center field.
- 49:08I had his big Dave Kingman and the Mets have been rocking that ball.
- 49:12The first pitch is a strike.
- 49:18Kingman batting 200 but he has four doubles, five homers and 11 runs batted in.
- 49:28Inside one on one.
- 49:30Got some high priced help with this Lave Friedman.
- 49:34Bring us water and coffee Dom.
- 49:37Oh you know there's nothing like it. You bring your own water and coffee man.
- 49:43The 1-1 pitch. Big curve. Oh and Kingman almost fell right into that breaking pitch.
- 49:51Kingman definitely a guess hitter and when he guesses right he can lose that baseball.
- 49:56He's leaning into the pitch as he holds the bat straight up and down and takes a strike on the inside corner.
- 50:03Two balls, two strikes, two out, no score.
- 50:09They don't think that Dave will pull the ball do they?
- 50:13Maybe he better pull the ball or he'll really cross him up.
- 50:17The way they pulled around infield and outfield. Swing and a miss.
- 50:20Strike three.
- 50:23No runs, a base hit, no errors, nobody left at the end of two.
- 50:27It's the Yankees nothing and the Mets nothing.
- 50:30Well it's a great game.
- 50:32Take the candy bar out of your mouth Frank no one can understand you.
- 50:35Yeah but it's so good. It's a baby Ruth bar.
- 50:37Well sure it's good but don't talk with your mouth full.
- 50:40Hey Phil that's why I love baby Ruth's. They're full of peanuts and fudge and chewy caramel with a sweet chocolatey coating. Great taste.
- 50:47I know but you still can't talk while you're eating.
- 50:49Okay you do the talking. I'll finish my baby Ruth.
- 50:53When you gotta have one you gotta have one.

- 51:28Flushing High School celebrates its 100th anniversary here at Chase Stadium on May 20th when the New York Yankees will be hosting the Kansas City Royals.
- 51:42All Flushing High School alumni will have their big get together that night.
- 51:46So if you're a Flushing High School grad call Flushing High School for more information.
- 51:52Bill?
- 52:02Alright Fred Stanley will lead it off and we see on deck Thurman Munson who will bat for Mike Wallace.
- 52:07Remember we're playing National League Rules tonight.
- 52:10No designated hitter for the Yankees.
- 52:13I'm surprised at Yogi. Pitches high ball one he wouldn't allow that.
- 52:17He wouldn't? What will I get Yogaly?
- 52:20Remember Mrs. Goldberg used to call Yogi that.
- 52:23You don't remember Mrs. Goldberg? You're too young Dominic.
- 52:26Cora doesn't remember me then.
- 52:28No but I do. High fly to right field Rusty Stobb moving back.
- 52:33Pounds the glove and makes the catch for the first out.
- 52:41And now Thurman Munson.
- 52:48What a year he's having batting 391.
- 52:5243 hits two doubles a triple two homers 19 runs batted in.
- 53:01Not a bad season for Thurman he's been hitting that ball.
- 53:04And again I keep thinking back to early in the year when I did that interview and he said I hope I can get a good start like 25 games.
- 53:11And he's doing it. He's gone by the 25 games and he has it.
- 53:15Change up line foul down to third base line.
- 53:19How many down?
- 53:21For Munson now he's at 28 games. Continued the pace.
- 53:26Okay.
- 53:29Everything Thurman hits on the nose outside it's one on one.
- 53:35No score top of the third inning.
- 53:41And gave you that one score Milwaukee beat Texas three to two.
- 53:47That's outside two balls in a strike Kansas City nothing the Red Sox nothing with Boston batting in the bottom of the fourth.
- 53:55The Cubs beat Houston four to two and what a year they're having for Jim Marshall.
- 53:59Atlanta to Montreal nothing in the top of the third and.
- 54:03Philadelphia beat Cincinnati six three change up hit down the third base line but foul.
- 54:09You know they had big headlines that came over the ticket tape about Richie Allen getting a hit his first time up and three standing ovation.
- 54:16Yep that was great and he might have done something in the bottom of the ninth because they were losing three to in the bottom of the ninth.
- 54:22Looks like somebody hit a grand slammer.
- 54:24Could it have been Richie Allen.
- 54:26I'll see why not.
- 54:29The two to pitch struck him out.
- 54:31Munson went for a bad pitch.
- 54:34Those stone picks up his second strike out and the batter Roy White who struck out his first time up.
- 54:51Stone winds and the pitch is low and outside ball.
- 55:04I've put you a little bit outside to nothing.
- 55:16George Stone kicks delivers it's on the outside corner.
- 55:21Two balls and a strike.
- 55:31Two out nobody on change up hit to second base nice big hop to hide him in over to first and the Yankees are retired in order.
- 55:39Nothing across in the middle of the third Yankees nothing and the Mets nothing.
- 55:45The show's hills and lakes and should talk.
- 55:58And it's all in our free book vacation land 96 pages filled with fantastic vacations only hours away.

- 57:10Listen Dominic I hate to do this to him and it's not in retaliation for making me make the West Coast trip.
- 57:19But I got a little bit of a jet lag and I got a headache that won't quit.
- 57:23Well if you don't mind taking over this bottom of the third and carrying on right from there all right.
- 57:27You look kind of pale Phil I don't worry Cora. OK Dom. Thank you Phil.
- 57:34No score in the ball game as we go to the bottom half of the third inning.
- 57:39And coming on to pitch now for the Yankees is Ken Clay.
- 57:42He went to spring training with the Yankees this year.
- 57:45He appeared in three games with a 1 0 record and pitched six innings allowed six hits and only one earned run.
- 57:53Ken Clay on the mound Wallace went to innings for the Yanks.
- 57:57No runs allowed three hits struck out one and he didn't walk any batters.
- 58:02And leading up will be John Stern for the New York Mets.
- 58:08Nothing to nothing in the bottom half of the third inning.
- 58:11The Yankees battling the Mets in the 13th annual Mayor's Trophy game.
- 58:17John Stern's outstanding athlete out of Colorado.
- 58:22The pitch to Stern's is a call strike.
- 58:25The outfield is straight away and deep for Stern's.
- 58:29We're in the bottom half of the third inning. Nothing to nothing.
- 58:32Into the wind up is Ken Clay the pitch breaking pitch grounded a short Mason on the second hop throws him out.
- 58:39One man up and one man down and the bottom half of the third inning.
- 58:44Stern's was up for his first time.
- 58:47Coming into the game and the regular season hitting at two 17.
- 58:51And George Stone who has pitched extremely well for the Mets steps in.
- 58:57On deck is Mike Phillips.
- 59:00Stone bats as he pitches left handed.
- 59:04The outfield is at medium depth and they play Stone straight away.
- 59:09Walt Williams now wide a third comes in a little bit on the edge of the grass.
- 59:14On the mound is Ken Clay for the Yankees.
- 59:17Wallace starter for the Yanks pitched two innings.
- 59:19The pitch to Stone fouled off in the stands and back of the dugout on third base.
- 59:25And tonight for the only game of the season the Yankees dugout.
- 59:29They of course during the regular season are at first base as are the Mets.
- 59:34The pitch and Stone takes it high and outside for ball one.
- 59:39Count is evened up for the ball and a strike.
- 59:42Milwaukee has defeated Texas three to two.
- 59:45The pitch is high ball two.
- 59:48No score in Boston at Fenway Park between Kansas City and the Red Sox.
- 59:54On the mound is Ken Clay.
- 59:57On deck is Mike Phillips.
- 59:59The pitch is fouled off.
- 1:00:01In the stands out of play.
- 1:00:04Don't forget that tomorrow night it will be the Yankees and the Oakland A's.
- 1:00:15Stone a left handed hitter.
- 1:00:19Digs in on the mound Ken Clay the one two pitch and it is high ball two.
- 1:00:25Two balls two strikes.
- 1:00:28The Yanks and the Mets the 13th annual Mears Trophy game.
- 1:00:31The two two pitch by Clay.
- 1:00:33Stone swings and misses.
- 1:00:35And that is the first strike out of all game for Clay.
- 1:00:41Two men down in the bottom half of the third inning.
- 1:00:49And sitting in now with us all tanned up back from that trip to Florida.
- 1:00:56Is Frank Messick.
- 1:00:57Good evening Frank. Good evening Don and hi everybody.
- 1:00:59Wherever you might be listening to New York Yankee baseball.
- 1:01:01And it sure is good to be back believe me.
- 1:01:04The pitch to Mike Phillips is high and outside for a ball.
- 1:01:08I tell you really did get a good 10.
- 1:01:11I got that fishing in Chesapeake Bay yesterday.
- 1:01:14The pitch is a call strike.
- 1:01:16Knee high fastball that picked up the inside corner.
- 1:01:19Counts evened up with a ball and a strike on Mike Phillips.
- 1:01:22Felix Mian is on deck.
- 1:01:24Nothing nothing.
- 1:01:25Mears Trophy game bottom of the third.
- 1:01:27The pitch is lined to right center field.
- 1:01:29Maddux going back gets in front of it.
- 1:01:31And then has to pick it off his shoe tops.
- 1:01:33And he does.
- 1:01:34A great catch by Elliott Maddux.
- 1:01:37And the Mets are retired in order.
- 1:01:39And the bottom half of the third inning with no runs.
- 1:01:42No hits. No errors. Nobody left on base.
- 1:01:45At the end of three full innings of play.
- 1:01:47And it's nothing to nothing.

- 1:02:54Well Dom I'm back and glad to be back.
- 1:02:56And I know the Yankees are glad to be back at Shea Stadium.
- 1:02:59And they'll open a series tomorrow night here with the Oakland A's.
- 1:03:02Tomorrow night don't forget all you folks in Greenwich Connecticut that is your night.
- 1:03:06When the Yankees play the Oakland A's and let's see.
- 1:03:10Pat Dobson will go against Vita Blue.
- 1:03:13You know I was sort of hoping the Yankees might miss Vita Blue in that three game series.
- 1:03:18But he's going to open it up.
- 1:03:19He won seven and lost one I think.
- 1:03:21Seven and one. He is tough.
- 1:03:24Another great athlete out of Southern University.
- 1:03:27You know you don't hear too much about Southern University but they produce some real fine athletes.
- 1:03:32And Frank how many times does it happen?
- 1:03:34The great play in the field and the guy comes up to hit first like Elliott Maddux.
- 1:03:38It happens very very often Dom and don't ask me why but I know it does.
- 1:03:42Stone's pitch to Maddux is high for a ball.
- 1:03:45One ball and no strikes.
- 1:03:47Elliott walked his first trip up.
- 1:03:49And Elliott came into the game hitting a 3.39 during the regular season for the Yankees.
- 1:03:53Outfield straight away and deep.
- 1:03:55Stone's pitch. A squibbler off the end of the bat.
- 1:03:57In the right field for a base hit.
- 1:03:59Elliott took a big healthy cut.
- 1:04:01And it hit the end of the bat.
- 1:04:03And went into the right field for a base hit.
- 1:04:05And you take those don't you?
- 1:04:07Yes you certainly do.
- 1:04:08And that one fooled John Millner.
- 1:04:10I thought Millner could make a play on the ball.
- 1:04:12It wasn't a hard hit.
- 1:04:14I think he thought it was hit harder than it was.
- 1:04:16And instead of breaking for the ball he broke toward the bag.
- 1:04:19And he could have had a play on it.
- 1:04:21And I might add that is the first hit of the ball game for the Yankees.
- 1:04:26The batter is Bobby Bonds.
- 1:04:28Reached on a fielder's choice in the first inning.
- 1:04:31So he has nothing for one.
- 1:04:33The outfield for Bobby is straight away and deep.
- 1:04:35Maddux with the lead at first.
- 1:04:37Millner holding. The pitch is outside for a ball.
- 1:04:40One ball and no strikes.
- 1:04:42On deck is Chris Chambliss.
- 1:04:44We're in the fourth inning of the annual Mayor's Trophy game.
- 1:04:48This is number 13.
- 1:04:50Each team is 1-6.
- 1:04:52Stone to the belt. The pitch is low.
- 1:04:55Two balls and no strikes.
- 1:04:57Chris Chambliss on deck.
- 1:04:59The Yankees and the Oakland A's tomorrow night.
- 1:05:02Here at the stadium.
- 1:05:04Looking in is Stone.
- 1:05:07George Stone to the belt.
- 1:05:09Maddux with the lead.
- 1:05:10Around goes the left arm.
- 1:05:12The pitch is high. Ball three.
- 1:05:15Frank, have you had a chance to get your lovely wife Jenny settled down?
- 1:05:21Are you still looking for the house?
- 1:05:23We're pretty well settled right now.
- 1:05:25We don't have a house or an apartment yet.
- 1:05:28But I feel like some kind of folks over there in New Jersey are going to come up with one for us.
- 1:05:34Frank Messer fans, they'll come up with it.
- 1:05:36The pitch is lined to the gap. Left center field.
- 1:05:39And it puts the outfielders and goes to the wall.
- 1:05:42Cut off by Kingman.
- 1:05:43Maddux on the third and into second base with a stand up double.
- 1:05:47It's Bobby Vines.
- 1:05:49And Vines really tattooed that pitch.
- 1:05:52A screamer to left center.
- 1:05:54He really did. He got it in between the left fielder, Kingman, and the center fielder, Gene Clines.
- 1:05:59That ball was so hard hit it skipped off the wall, came back, and Maddux who can fly had to be flagged down at third base by Dick Halton.
- 1:06:07So the Yankees present the first scoring threat in this Mayor's Trophy game.
- 1:06:12That is the second hit off of George Stone in the ballgame.
- 1:06:18Runners on second and third with nobody out.
- 1:06:21Chris Chambliss, the left handed hitter steps in.
- 1:06:24The outfields around her right and deep.
- 1:06:26The big gap is down the left field line.
- 1:06:28Stone to the belt.
- 1:06:29Bonds and Maddux with a lead.
- 1:06:31The pitch grounded to second base.
- 1:06:34The throw on to first base for the out.
- 1:06:37But Elliott Maddux scores.
- 1:06:38And Bobby Vines goes on to third base.
- 1:06:41Jack Heidemann making the play on to Milder.
- 1:06:45And there is one man down.
- 1:06:51So the Yankees lead the ballgame one to nothing.
- 1:06:59Walt Williams is the hitter.
- 1:07:01Walt tonight walked in the second inning.
- 1:07:04He is officially yet to come to the plate.
- 1:07:07Hitting 450 on the season.
- 1:07:09Outfield straight away and deep.
- 1:07:11Bonds is at third base.
- 1:07:13One out.
- 1:07:14Stone to the belt.
- 1:07:15The pitch to Williams.
- 1:07:16High for a ball.
- 1:07:17On deck for the Yankees.
- 1:07:19Rick Dempsey.
- 1:07:21Don't forget now the big three game weekend series between the Yankees and the Oakland A's to be followed by the Kansas City Royals.
- 1:07:30The big gap for Williams is left center field.
- 1:07:33Stone to the belt.
- 1:07:34The 1-0 pitch.
- 1:07:35Walt takes it outside and low for a ball.
- 1:07:37Two balls and no strikes.
- 1:07:39On Walt Williams.
- 1:07:41Rick Dempsey is on deck for the Yankees.
- 1:07:45We're in the top half of the fourth inning.
- 1:07:48The Yanks are leading the ballgame one to nothing on two hits.
- 1:07:52The pitch to Williams is grounded foul and back.
- 1:07:55Two balls and one strike.
- 1:07:57Frank first look at Oakland.
- 1:08:00As you and I both didn't get out to the west coast but they're as devastating as ever.
- 1:08:05Yes they certainly are with Reggie Jackson's bat.
- 1:08:08He always hits well here in New York.
- 1:08:09By the blue.
- 1:08:10Seven and one record pitching tomorrow night.
- 1:08:12It's going to be a great ballgame.
- 1:08:13The 2-1 pitch.
- 1:08:14Williams started after it and knew better and let it go for ball three.
- 1:08:18Three balls and a strike.
- 1:08:20Rick Dempsey is on deck.
- 1:08:23Outstanding center fielder.
- 1:08:24Bill North.
- 1:08:25Kampy Kampenaris.
- 1:08:26The shortstop.
- 1:08:27Sal Bando.
- 1:08:28Their captain and third baseman.
- 1:08:30Oh boy I don't know.
- 1:08:31Bill Rudy.
- 1:08:32Gene Tennant.
- 1:08:33Quite a lineup.
- 1:08:34Go on and on can't you.
- 1:08:35Walt Williams waiting for the 3-1 pitch from George Stone.
- 1:08:39Stone to the belt.
- 1:08:40Bonds with a lead at third.
- 1:08:41The Yanks lead 1-0.
- 1:08:42The pitch is hit high in the air.
- 1:08:44The deep left field.
- 1:08:46Going back is Kingman and this will score Bonds easily.
- 1:08:50And Bobby just trots in.
- 1:08:52So it's a sacrifice fly for little Walt Williams who put some good wood to that.
- 1:08:57He really did.
- 1:08:58That ball was just a little too much towards center field to carry over the wall.
- 1:09:02He just missed that jet stream alley as we refer to it out there.
- 1:09:06It goes for those of you familiar with Shea Stadium.
- 1:09:09Just about from the foul pole in left field.
- 1:09:11Just past the dugout fast.
- 1:09:13You got a ball up in the air fairly well hit in that area.
- 1:09:15And unless the wind is blowing the other way pretty hard it will carry out of here.
- 1:09:19Rick Dempsey the hitter.
- 1:09:21The pitch is grounded wide at third.
- 1:09:23Over to his left is Garrett.
- 1:09:24The throw to first for the out.
- 1:09:25And the Yankees are retired in the top of the fourth inning.
- 1:09:29But not before they pick up two runs.
- 1:09:32The Yankees had two hits.
- 1:09:34Nobody was left.
- 1:09:35No errors by the Mets.
- 1:09:36At the end of three and a half the Yankees lead it two to nothing.
- 1:09:48When you are the one you are the one to count on.
- 1:09:52Since 1842 Schaeffer has always been the one to count on.
- 1:09:56Schaeffer has the rare quality of flavor that never fades glass after glass.
- 1:10:01Schaeffer is the one that always delivers.
- 1:10:22Today among America's great premium loggers.
- 1:10:25The one that came first is still the one.
- 1:10:28Schaeffer the one that comes through beer after beer.
- 1:10:45Well we've got some changes now for the Yankees.
- 1:10:48I see Walt Williams has gone to play center field.
- 1:10:51And coming into play third base Bob Oliver and out in right field Ron Bloomberg.
- 1:10:56So you're outfield now is Penella in left.
- 1:10:58Williams in center.
- 1:10:59Bloomberg in right.
- 1:11:00The infield has Bob Oliver at third.
- 1:11:03Mason at short.
- 1:11:04Stanley at second and Chambliss at first as they were.
- 1:11:06Dempsey still catching.
- 1:11:08And Bob Johnson the big right hander on the mound.
- 1:11:13Jack Heidemann leads it off for the New York Mets.
- 1:11:16And the bottom half of the fourth hits a bouncer that takes a bad hop and goes over Jim Mason's head into left center field.
- 1:11:25A bad hop that will go no doubt as a base hit for Heidemann.
- 1:11:32And the Mets will have the lead off hitter on.
- 1:11:39As Frank gave them to you now.
- 1:11:41Walt Williams is in center field.
- 1:11:43Bob Oliver is over at third base.
- 1:11:45And Ron Bloomberg is in right.
- 1:11:50The Yankees leading in the ball game.
- 1:11:52Two to nothing.
- 1:11:53Gene Clines is the hitter.
- 1:11:57Heidemann leads off first.
- 1:11:59The pitch to Clines is high for a ball.
- 1:12:02Bob Johnson on the mound for the Yankees.
- 1:12:04He split last season between the Cleveland Indians and Spokane of the Pacific Coast League.
- 1:12:09Released by the Texas Rangers this spring and picked up by the Yankees.
- 1:12:13One ball no strike.
- 1:12:15And Johnson throws on to first base.
- 1:12:17Ironically enough Bob Johnson once was a Mets.
- 1:12:20He was in that trade with Amazotus for Joe Foy.
- 1:12:24That trade with Kansas City some years ago.
- 1:12:27The pitch is popped up.
- 1:12:29In foul ground.
- 1:12:31Chris Chambliss is under it outside of first base and makes the catch and there's one man down.
- 1:12:43Rusty's got the hitter.
- 1:12:45Rusty's single the right field back of the first inning.
- 1:12:48Hitting three oh three during the regular season.
- 1:12:51And it looks like Rusty's right back on the beam hitting the ball well.
- 1:12:55Yes he is hitting the ball well and managing to stay healthy so far.
- 1:13:01Bob Johnson on the mound.
- 1:13:03The infield for the Yankees with one out set up for the double play.
- 1:13:07Wyatt at third base is Bob Oliver.
- 1:13:10The outfield is around to right and deep.
- 1:13:12The pitch stopped.
- 1:13:13Lines went to right.
- 1:13:14Bloomberg makes a one handed catch.
- 1:13:17Practically hit right at him.
- 1:13:19And there's two men down.
- 1:13:20But I'll tell you Rusty really hit it.
- 1:13:23And Ronnie made it look like Bobby Bonds.
- 1:13:25Yes he did.
- 1:13:26Ronnie cut the pie a little bit on that one.
- 1:13:28He has read all the things that have been written and I guess said too about his fielding.
- 1:13:33I think he cut the pie a little bit there.
- 1:13:35Hard line drive and he one handed it.
- 1:13:39The hitter is John Miller the first baseman who single the right back in the second inning.
- 1:13:45Hitting two seventeen on the season.
- 1:13:47The pitch is a call strike breaking pitch by Bob Johnson that broke over nicely.
- 1:13:51And with the double play possibility with two outs eliminated the infield is back.
- 1:13:57However the outfield is around to right and deep.
- 1:13:59Itaman leads off first.
- 1:14:01Chambliss not holding the pitches in the dirt.
- 1:14:03Blocked nicely by Rick Dempsey.
- 1:14:05The big gap is down that left field line.
- 1:14:09For the hitter John Miller.
- 1:14:11On deck is Dave Kingman.
- 1:14:14The Yankees lead it two nothing.
- 1:14:16We're in the bottom of the fourth.
- 1:14:18Bob Johnson goes to the belt.
- 1:14:20Itaman with the lead at first.
- 1:14:22The pitch by Johnson is too close.
- 1:14:25Spun away from that.
- 1:14:26Look like it might almost hit him.
- 1:14:28Two balls and a strike.
- 1:14:32You know watching Bob Johnson this is the first time I've seen him with a man on.
- 1:14:36But it looks like he's picked up that Lewis Teod type of stretch.
- 1:14:39He comes down and look at that.
- 1:14:41See him set about three times.
- 1:14:42The pitch is popped up.
- 1:14:44In the short.
- 1:14:46Stop area Mason under it and he makes the grab for the out.
- 1:14:50And the Mets are retiring at the bottom of the fourth.
- 1:14:53With no runs there was one hit.
- 1:14:56No errors.
- 1:14:57A runner left.
- 1:14:58At the end of four bullies of play.
- 1:15:00The Yankees have two runs two hits no errors.
- 1:15:02The Mets no runs four hits no errors.

- 1:16:37Yes I am Frank and I'm looking forward to it.
- 1:16:40Azusa Lewis got a right field for Rusty Stobhiel bat and Stobh's place fourth in the order.
- 1:16:45The pitchers outside for a ball to Jim Mason.
- 1:16:49Mason up for his second time hit into a double playback of the second inning.
- 1:16:53Stone still in the mound for the match.
- 1:16:55The pitchers grounded down the first base line.
- 1:16:57Fair ball.
- 1:16:58Bobble picked up.
- 1:16:59Throw to Stone is in time.
- 1:17:01Miller recovered just in time on a close play.
- 1:17:04Let's pause 15 seconds for a statement of identification.
- 1:17:07This is the New York Yankee baseball at work.
- 1:17:10This is WMCA New York.
- 1:17:13Hello there everybody.
- 1:17:14This is Mel Allen.
- 1:17:15If your air freight company takes your small packages lightly call Emory.
- 1:17:21The shortest distance between two points.
- 1:17:27Fred Stanley steps in the batter's box.
- 1:17:29The pitch to Stanley is down low for a ball.
- 1:17:34One ball and no strikes.
- 1:17:35George Stone on the mound for the Mets.
- 1:17:37He's been there from the opening pitch.
- 1:17:39The pitch by Stone is fouled off and back.
- 1:17:42The count now is evened up with a ball and a strike.
- 1:17:45Stanley fly to right field back in the third inning.
- 1:17:49So he is nothing for one.
- 1:17:51The outfield play Stanley to hip to right.
- 1:17:55Alou over towards the line and right.
- 1:17:57The center fielder climbs in right center.
- 1:18:00Big gap left center field.
- 1:18:01The pitchers hit high and deep to left field.
- 1:18:03Back goes Kingman to the warning track and makes the catch and there's two men down.
- 1:18:12The Yankees leading in the ball game.
- 1:18:14Two to nothing here in the top half of the fifth inning with the two men down.
- 1:18:20Bob Johnson the batter.
- 1:18:23He's up for his first time.
- 1:18:28And although he throws right he hits left.
- 1:18:31So he'll be hitting left against the left handed pitching of George Stone.
- 1:18:37The pitch by Stone and Johnson swings and hits a blooper to center field coming on fast and one handed shoe string catch by Gene Klein.
- 1:18:47And the Yankees are retired with no runs, no hits.
- 1:18:50Nobody left on base.
- 1:18:51No errors by the bats.
- 1:18:53At the end of four and a half the Yankees lead it two to nothing.
- 1:19:04When you are the one you are the one to count on.
- 1:19:07Since 1842 Schaeffer has always been the one to count on.
- 1:19:11Schaeffer has the rare quality of flavor that never fades glass after glass.
- 1:19:16Schaeffer is the one that always delivers.
- 1:19:21Schaeffer is the one.
- 1:19:23One fear to have when you're having more than one.
- 1:19:27More than one.
- 1:19:29Schaeffer pleasure does obey even when your thirst is done.
- 1:19:37Today among America's great premium lagers the one that came first is still the one.
- 1:19:44Schaeffer the one that comes through beer after beer.
- 1:19:49Schaeffer is the one that you're having more than one.
- 1:19:55That's Vacation lap.
- 1:20:12left. Okay, Garrett. Thank you,
- 1:20:21Frank. Wayne Garrett leads it
- 1:20:23off for the Mets on the bottom
- 1:20:24of the bed. Bob Johnson under
- 1:20:25the wind up. The pitch is high
- 1:20:27for a ball, one ball and no
- 1:20:29strikes. The outfield for
- 1:20:31Garrett around the right and
- 1:20:32back deep. Walt Williams
- 1:20:34replacing Elliot Maddox and
- 1:20:36right center Johnson's
- 1:20:38delivery is on the outside
- 1:20:40corner for a call strike.
- 1:20:42Counts evened up for the ball
- 1:20:43and a strike. The big gap for
- 1:20:46Garrett down the left field
- 1:20:47line and left center field.
- 1:20:49Gaines leading two nothing.
- 1:20:50Pitch is lying foul down that
- 1:20:52first base line. One ball and
- 1:20:55two strikes. Wide at third
- 1:20:58base is Bob Oliver. Mason the
- 1:21:01shortstop over towards the bag.
- 1:21:05Fred Stanley is in the hole on
- 1:21:07the right side of the infield.
- 1:21:10Eddie O's coaching at third.
- 1:21:12Roy McMillan at first. The
- 1:21:13pitch is way outside. Looked
- 1:21:15like it got away from Bob
- 1:21:16Johnson. Counts evened up at
- 1:21:19two balls and two strikes.
- 1:21:23Bill White with the night off
- 1:21:24tonight and Bill will be back
- 1:21:26with Frank and Phil tomorrow
- 1:21:28night. Yanks and the A. The
- 1:21:29pitch high ball three. Three
- 1:21:32balls and two strikes. Wayne
- 1:21:34Garrett. Bob Johnson replacing
- 1:21:37Mike Wallace who started the
- 1:21:38ballgame and pitched the first
- 1:21:39two innings of the game. Gave
- 1:21:42up three hits no runs. The
- 1:21:43pitch. Garrett fouls it off and
- 1:21:45back. Three balls and two
- 1:21:47strikes on Wayne Garrett. And
- 1:21:50you were mentioning Frank
- 1:21:52before we get a runner on about
- 1:21:54Johnson possibly trying to
- 1:21:55emulate Tia. That wouldn't be
- 1:21:57all bad would it. I don't know
- 1:22:00it wouldn't. He out there.
- 1:22:01Bulls a lot of people that way.
- 1:22:04The pitchers hit high and deep
- 1:22:06to right. It is a foul ball.
- 1:22:08And he got a run on that one and
- 1:22:10really peppered it. I don't know
- 1:22:12whether Johnson picked it up for
- 1:22:14Tia or whether that is just his
- 1:22:16natural. Of course it's his
- 1:22:19natural delivery or he couldn't
- 1:22:20get by with it would be a ball.
- 1:22:24The three to pitch. Garrett
- 1:22:26grounds one wide a first taken
- 1:22:28by Chambliss who wins the race
- 1:22:30to the bag. And there is one man
- 1:22:31up and one man down. And the
- 1:22:34bottom half of the fifth inning
- 1:22:40Dave Kingman the hitter for the
- 1:22:42Mets. He went down swinging in
- 1:22:45the second inning. He is 0 for
- 1:22:471 tonight. Dave has five home
- 1:22:51runs 11 RBI is during the
- 1:22:52regular season. Heading at 200
- 1:22:55the outfield around the left and
- 1:22:57deep the pitch to Kingman swung
- 1:22:59out of it. He took a tremendous
- 1:23:02cut. He is big and strong. He
- 1:23:06was a great athlete at Southern
- 1:23:08California. The pitchers outside
- 1:23:12can't even up at a ball on a
- 1:23:13strike. He's an imposing sight
- 1:23:15isn't he as they say. Yes he is.
- 1:23:17What is he about 6 6 2 20
- 1:23:19somewhere in that neighborhood.
- 1:23:20Yeah he's not small Frank. The
- 1:23:231 1 pitch to Kingman and Dave
- 1:23:25Kingman takes a breaking pitch
- 1:23:27too close for ball to. I mean
- 1:23:29you're about 6 3 and he's he's
- 1:23:31a he's a big man. Yes he is.
- 1:23:36Do nothing the Yankees lead it
- 1:23:37we're in the bottom of the
- 1:23:38fifth the pitch to Kingman and
- 1:23:40Kingman swings and misses as
- 1:23:43Johnson with a beautiful change
- 1:23:44in speed pitch pull a string on
- 1:23:46him. Kingman gave it a big cut
- 1:23:48and didn't get it and the
- 1:23:49count is evened up to and to the
- 1:23:53course if you get it up at his
- 1:23:54wheelhouse he's going to put it
- 1:23:56out of here. He's big and
- 1:23:57strong Dave had all of his
- 1:24:01clothes stolen out of his car
- 1:24:04is that right. I hope the guy
- 1:24:05that took him is thinking of the
- 1:24:08pitch is swung on a miss and for
- 1:24:11the second straight time Dave
- 1:24:12Kingman goes down swinging. I
- 1:24:14hope the guy that took him is
- 1:24:15not big enough and can't use
- 1:24:16him. That'll make it worse.
- 1:24:23John Stearns is the batter. John
- 1:24:26Stearns is the catcher tonight
- 1:24:28had a chance to meet John. He is
- 1:24:30an excellent athlete out of
- 1:24:31Colorado. He was all big age
- 1:24:34safety drafted by the Buffalo
- 1:24:36Bills in a late round pitches
- 1:24:38too close for a ball and he was
- 1:24:40involved in that tug McGraw
- 1:24:42trade. The outfield is straight
- 1:24:45away and deeper John Stearns the
- 1:24:47pitch by Johnson is outside and
- 1:24:50low ball to do it. Oh two meter
- 1:24:53down where the bottom of the
- 1:24:54fifth the Yankees lead it to
- 1:24:55nothing. Both runs coming in
- 1:24:57the top of the board. The pitch
- 1:24:59to Stearns is granted a short
- 1:25:00base on the short hop fires on
- 1:25:03a first he's got him and the
- 1:25:04better retired in order and the
- 1:25:06bottom of the fifth with no runs
- 1:25:08no hits nor is nobody left on
- 1:25:09base at the end of five full
- 1:25:11ladies of play the Yankees
- 1:25:12lead it to another turn meal
- 1:25:15time at the polio time with
- 1:25:17creamy smooth polio recorder and
- 1:25:19easy to slice quick to melt
- 1:25:21polio mozzarella. They've been
- 1:25:23the best of the best in the
- 1:25:25world for over 75 years. But
- 1:25:28you've only just begun to know
- 1:25:30polio because the polio family
- 1:25:32of fine foods has grown
- 1:25:33considerably and with it the
- 1:25:35number of great tasting dishes
- 1:25:36you can make now you can enjoy
- 1:25:38polio tomatoes as well as polio
- 1:25:41bacon or for an exotic taste
- 1:25:43five polio artichoke hearts and
- 1:25:45polio Italian style breadcrumbs
- 1:25:48now more than ever polio has all
- 1:25:50you need to put real Italian
- 1:25:52food on the table. Life insurance
- 1:25:55policies offered by most
- 1:25:56companies are remarkably similar
- 1:25:58but their cost can be
- 1:25:59substantially different.
- 1:26:00Savings bank life insurance can
- 1:26:02save you money because it is
- 1:26:03really low cost. For example at
- 1:26:05age 30 a thirty thousand dollar
- 1:26:07five year renewable term policy
- 1:26:09costs only eight dollars seventy
- 1:26:10cents a month to find out how
- 1:26:12much you can save with any of
- 1:26:13SBL eyes popular plans. See the
- 1:26:15S.B.L.I. specialist at a nearby
- 1:26:17savings bank. S.B.L.I. leaves
- 1:26:22the bank. Well check in the
- 1:26:26scoreboard for you quickly.
- 1:26:28Milwaukee won that suspended
- 1:26:30game of last night beating Texas
- 1:26:323 to 2. They play 17 innings I
- 1:26:34believe last night got caught by
- 1:26:36curfew then Texas he turned
- 1:26:39around and checked that Texas and
- 1:26:41Milwaukee will now play the
- 1:26:42regular game. So the suspended
- 1:26:46game went to Milwaukee 3 to 2
- 1:26:49Kansas City and Boston still
- 1:26:51have a lot of time left.
- 1:26:52They're still in the bottom
- 1:26:53half of the fifth inning at
- 1:26:54Fenway Park in the National
- 1:26:56League. It was the Cubs over
- 1:26:57Houston this afternoon for to
- 1:26:59do Atlanta and Montreal delayed
- 1:27:03by rain with Atlanta leading
- 1:27:04four nothing. And let's see the
- 1:27:07Phillies and Cincinnati playing
- 1:27:09a doubleheader.
- 1:27:10Philadelphia won the first game
- 1:27:11six to three and the Phillies
- 1:27:12lead in the night cap one to
- 1:27:14nothing at the end of two and a
- 1:27:15half innings right here.
- 1:27:16The Yankees are out in front to
- 1:27:18nothing and we go to the six
- 1:27:19to three and the Yankees and
- 1:27:21Frank we had a chance to
- 1:27:22interview Lou before the game
- 1:27:24for our pregame show.
- 1:27:25He said he's much better still
- 1:27:27not fully recovered from that
- 1:27:28air infection but it really did
- 1:27:30take its toll.
- 1:27:31Pitches grounded foul.
- 1:27:33That was tough.
- 1:27:33And of course it happened to
- 1:27:35Lou.
- 1:27:36He had to leave a ballgame
- 1:27:37complaining of dizziness.
- 1:27:39You know you got something in
- 1:27:40that here you can get dizzy
- 1:27:41because doesn't something in
- 1:27:43their control the equilibrium.
- 1:27:46Amen.
- 1:27:46Don't ask me to spell it.
- 1:27:47The Yankees are leading the
- 1:27:49game.
- 1:27:49Stone into the wind up.
- 1:27:51The old one pitches one on a
- 1:27:52miss by Lou.
- 1:27:54Nothing in to on Lou Pennella.
- 1:27:56The Yankees are leading in the
- 1:27:58ballgame to another.
- 1:28:00We're in the top half of the
- 1:28:01sixth inning.
- 1:28:02Stone into the wind up the pitch
- 1:28:04Panela lines it but it is back
- 1:28:06at it.
- 1:28:06At the short a fine play by
- 1:28:09Phillips.
- 1:28:12And stepping in now is Ron
- 1:28:14Ponello running up for his first
- 1:28:19time as was Lou Pennella.
- 1:28:23And Ron has been bothered with
- 1:28:25a bad shoulder.
- 1:28:27He is a left handed hitter with
- 1:28:28a lot of power.
- 1:28:30Stone the left hander pitching
- 1:28:31against the left hander the
- 1:28:32pitches grounded.
- 1:28:34Fair ball pass first down the
- 1:28:36right field line now on foul
- 1:28:37territory Bloomberg around first
- 1:28:39on his way to second he slides
- 1:28:41and he's got a double.
- 1:28:42And the Yankees with one out at
- 1:28:44Bloomberg on second with Bob
- 1:28:46Oliver ready to hit.
- 1:28:48And Ron not only hit that one
- 1:28:51hard Frank but he placed it well
- 1:28:53he certainly did and they
- 1:28:55Miller on the first base umpire
- 1:28:56Hank Sore got tangled up there
- 1:28:58for just a second.
- 1:29:00Good to see Hank Sore back on
- 1:29:02the field dog on it he can still
- 1:29:03on fire.
- 1:29:06Bob Oliver the hitter for the
- 1:29:08Yankees he is at third base
- 1:29:10tonight.
- 1:29:10Bob hasn't been up that much to
- 1:29:13hit an 18 at bats and seven
- 1:29:14ballgames but he's got power
- 1:29:18hitting at one eleven the
- 1:29:19outfield is straight away and
- 1:29:20deep with one out.
- 1:29:22Bloomberg leads on second stone
- 1:29:24to the belt the pitches swung on
- 1:29:26a miss Oliver took a great big
- 1:29:28cut and didn't get it.
- 1:29:30The big gap for Bob Oliver is in
- 1:29:32left center field and down that
- 1:29:33left field line.
- 1:29:35Dick Hauser coaching at third
- 1:29:36Elston Howard at first.
- 1:29:38Yanks lead it to nothing.
- 1:29:40Top of the second stone leans
- 1:29:42and gets the sign goes to the
- 1:29:44belt around goes the left arm
- 1:29:46the pitch is high for ball one
- 1:29:49that has evened up at a ball on
- 1:29:50the strike on Bob Oliver the
- 1:29:54bar tonight.
- 1:29:54The opener of a three game
- 1:29:56series here at Shea Stadium the
- 1:29:58Yankees and the Oakland A's
- 1:30:00stone again to the belt the
- 1:30:02pitch to Oliver is a call strike
- 1:30:04over knee high one ball two
- 1:30:06strikes on Bob Oliver on deck is
- 1:30:10Chris Chambliss the first
- 1:30:11baseman George Stone trying to
- 1:30:15come back for the Mets and he's
- 1:30:16been fairly effective here
- 1:30:17tonight.
- 1:30:18He's allowed two runs and three
- 1:30:20hits.
- 1:30:21He goes to the belt the pitch
- 1:30:23and Oliver pops it up getting
- 1:30:26under it is Wayne Garrett
- 1:30:27calling for it coming in and
- 1:30:29fairground he's got it.
- 1:30:30And there are two more strikes
- 1:30:32and he's got it and there are
- 1:30:34two men out Chris Chambliss the
- 1:30:43first baseman steps in first
- 1:30:47tonight is flying to center
- 1:30:49field and grounded the second he
- 1:30:51is over to him into the game
- 1:30:54during the regular season
- 1:30:55heading at two seventy two the
- 1:30:58outfield shades Chambliss to
- 1:31:00right.
- 1:31:00The big gap is left center
- 1:31:01field and down that left field
- 1:31:03line Ron Bloomberg who doubled
- 1:31:05down the right field line with
- 1:31:07one out leads off second the
- 1:31:09pitcher Chambliss grounded foul
- 1:31:11down the first base line
- 1:31:13Bloomberg has good speed for a
- 1:31:15big guy he can move we said
- 1:31:18Ronnie has been bothered with
- 1:31:20that sore shoulder on deck is
- 1:31:22Walt Williams the Yankees leading
- 1:31:27to the nothing 13th annual
- 1:31:29Yankees and the Yankees trophy
- 1:31:32game.
- 1:31:33Each team has won six games
- 1:31:37George Stone goes to the belt
- 1:31:39around goes the left arm the
- 1:31:40pitch is down low outside one
- 1:31:44ball and one strike the Yankees
- 1:31:50and the New York bats in the
- 1:31:5313th annual mayor's trophy game

- 1:31:57Yankees pitch the first two
- 1:31:59games.
- 1:31:59George Stone to the belt checks
- 1:32:02the runner Bloomberg the pitch
- 1:32:04too close too low ball to two
- 1:32:06and one and after the Oakland
- 1:32:09A's Frank the Kansas City Royals
- 1:32:12Texas should be quite a
- 1:32:13halt then.
- 1:32:14Yes it will be the Yankees
- 1:32:15continue their American League
- 1:32:16season play against the Western
- 1:32:17clubs George Stone goes to the
- 1:32:22belt the pitcher Chambliss has
- 1:32:23swung on and foul into the Mets
- 1:32:25dugout along the first base
- 1:32:27line and the Yankees have now
- 1:32:29is evened up at two balls and
- 1:32:31two strikes.
- 1:32:32Here's the rundown on that
- 1:32:34suspended game down in Texas and
- 1:32:35what they wound up playing 15
- 1:32:37innings Milwaukee winning at
- 1:32:38three to two on only four hits
- 1:32:40in 15 innings but they won the
- 1:32:41ballgame.
- 1:32:44Stone into the windup for the
- 1:32:46two to pitch and Chambliss swings
- 1:32:48and fouls it off in fact of the
- 1:32:50Yankee dugout along the third
- 1:32:52base line into the stands and a
- 1:32:54scramble for that baseball.
- 1:32:55How many of you are out here
- 1:32:57tonight.
- 1:32:57Frank twenty five thousand you
- 1:32:59think you know I'm the one of
- 1:33:02the worst in the world at
- 1:33:03estimating a crowd that makes
- 1:33:04two of it.
- 1:33:06That's why I called you in.
- 1:33:08I'm worse than that when it
- 1:33:09comes to trying to figure it
- 1:33:11out.
- 1:33:12Stone lanes in to get the sign
- 1:33:14from his catcher Stern.
- 1:33:15He goes to the belt Bloomberg
- 1:33:18with a lead off second the two
- 1:33:19to pitch is fouled again and
- 1:33:21back out of play and the count
- 1:33:23stays at two balls and two
- 1:33:25strikes.
- 1:33:30Old Timers Day Saturday June
- 1:33:3328 here at Shea Stadium.
- 1:33:37That'll be for the men for the
- 1:33:38Yankees.
- 1:33:39That's the match the pitch to
- 1:33:41Chambliss too close.
- 1:33:43Three and two full count.
- 1:33:45And of course an old timers day
- 1:33:46game.
- 1:33:56George Stone goes to the belt
- 1:34:00Bloomberg with a lead the three
- 1:34:01to pitch is grounded foul down
- 1:34:04the first base line.
- 1:34:05So Chambliss really hitting at
- 1:34:07that baseball and keeping alive
- 1:34:09you know talking about old
- 1:34:10timers games the Yankees old
- 1:34:12timers game will be on Saturday
- 1:34:13afternoon August the second.
- 1:34:15And we'll see Joe DiMaggio and
- 1:34:17Mickey Madeline and so many of
- 1:34:19our old friends.
- 1:34:20It's always great.
- 1:34:21Old Timers Day the three to
- 1:34:22pitch to Chambliss is grounded
- 1:34:24through the hole in a center
- 1:34:25fielder base hit around third is
- 1:34:27Bloomberg and he'll come out of
- 1:34:29score flying bare hands of all
- 1:34:31but Bloomberg scores and the
- 1:34:33Yankees lead it.
- 1:34:34Greta Nothing on the single by
- 1:34:37Chris Chambliss Chambliss now
- 1:34:39has two RBI tonight and of course
- 1:34:52the scooter he plays in that
- 1:34:54game too does he.
- 1:34:54Scooter always plays push the
- 1:34:56chewing gum on the button of his
- 1:34:58cap and he goes out there and
- 1:34:59plays shortstop that came from
- 1:35:01that 17 game winning streak he
- 1:35:03was telling me and he would take
- 1:35:05it off and kept showing it for
- 1:35:0717 games talk about superstition
- 1:35:10but that's what made him a great
- 1:35:11ball player not the superstition
- 1:35:13the ability and he was one of
- 1:35:15the great ones the pitches
- 1:35:17outside for a ball one ball no
- 1:35:20strikes on Walt Williams Walt
- 1:35:22tonight walked in the second
- 1:35:24inning sacrifice flying the
- 1:35:26fourth and RBI for Walt
- 1:35:28Chambliss leads off first
- 1:35:30Miller is holding the pitch
- 1:35:31Williams takes a breaking pitch
- 1:35:33down low too close to it.
- 1:35:35The Yankees are leading in the
- 1:35:36game.
- 1:35:37Greta Nothing each team has four
- 1:35:39hits stone goes to the belt.
- 1:35:43Chambliss with the lead.
- 1:35:44Miller holding the pitch to
- 1:35:45Williams swung on a miss.
- 1:35:47Walt took a good cut and didn't
- 1:35:49get it on deck is Rick Dempsey
- 1:35:54the Yankees and the New York
- 1:35:56Mets 13th annual Mears Trophy
- 1:35:59game.
- 1:35:59Good crowd here tonight.
- 1:36:01The Yankees are leading the game
- 1:36:03in the Mears Trophy game.
- 1:36:05Good crowd here tonight.
- 1:36:09George Stone again to the belt
- 1:36:10checks the runner the pitch is
- 1:36:12lying the short and it is glove
- 1:36:14by Mike Phillips and the Yankees
- 1:36:16are retired and the sixth inning
- 1:36:19with one run and the Yankees had
- 1:36:23one hit one run a left on base
- 1:36:26and no errors by the best at the
- 1:36:28end of five and a half the
- 1:36:29Yankees lead it three to
- 1:36:31three after years of selling only
- 1:36:38one kind of gasoline.
- 1:36:40The Getty Oil Company is now
- 1:36:41selling to get a premium and
- 1:36:44getting no lead.
- 1:36:46Which one should you use.
- 1:36:48Well if you drive a 71 through
- 1:36:5074 car chances are it can run in
- 1:36:52a gasoline like getting no lead.
- 1:36:55If you drive a 75 it probably
- 1:36:57has to run in a gasoline like
- 1:36:59getting no lead.
- 1:36:59On the other hand if you drive a
- 1:37:01car that was built in 1970 or
- 1:37:03before you'll get the top
- 1:37:05performance you want from getting
- 1:37:06premium but no matter what kind
- 1:37:09of car you've got and getting
- 1:37:10what's best for it.
- 1:37:13Remember don't waste gasoline
- 1:37:15but when you do drive fill up
- 1:37:17with getting no lead for cars
- 1:37:19built after 1971 premium for
- 1:37:22cars built before 1971.
- 1:37:25We've got what's best for your
- 1:37:27car.
- 1:37:34Well we have a new pitcher down
- 1:37:35for the Yankees.
- 1:37:36It's going to be Kenny Clay and
- 1:37:37I'm anxious to see him.
- 1:37:38I watched him several times down
- 1:37:41in spring training and I'll tell
- 1:37:43you he looked quite impressive
- 1:37:44down there.
- 1:37:45He's pitching over at West Haven
- 1:37:46right now and had a record of
- 1:37:482 0 and the Yankees called him
- 1:37:49over to pitch in this ballgame.
- 1:37:52Ken Clay a big hit from
- 1:37:54Lynchburg Virginia.
- 1:37:55Comes out of the Yankees and Bob
- 1:37:56Johnson did himself proud.
- 1:37:58He pitched three innings and
- 1:37:59out one hit didn't walk anybody
- 1:38:01struck out two men and he had an
- 1:38:03impressive three innings.
- 1:38:05And as we wait for Clay to
- 1:38:06complete his warm up draws
- 1:38:08Atlanta leading Montreal for the
- 1:38:09nothing in the bottom half of
- 1:38:11the fourth inning but that game
- 1:38:12is delayed by rain in Montreal.
- 1:38:15I know a lot of our baseball
- 1:38:16listeners are probably
- 1:38:17interested in basketball as
- 1:38:18well.
- 1:38:19So the ABA playoff game at
- 1:38:21halftime the Indiana Patriots
- 1:38:2350 and Kentucky 45.
- 1:38:27Frank Don Valentino has an
- 1:38:29interest I'm sure in that still
- 1:38:30following basketball.
- 1:38:32Yeah I sure am especially having
- 1:38:33been involved with the New York
- 1:38:35Nets.
- 1:38:36We did want to mention from all
- 1:38:38of us connected with the Yankee
- 1:38:39broadcast.
- 1:38:40Congratulations to Barry Gray.
- 1:38:42He is celebrating his 25th
- 1:38:44anniversary tonight on WMCA.
- 1:38:47That of course is quite an
- 1:38:48achievement.
- 1:38:49And it really is a great
- 1:38:52career at WMCA for Barry Gray.
- 1:38:55Congratulations from everybody.
- 1:38:58We're all set to go now on the
- 1:38:59bottom half of the sixth inning
- 1:39:01George Stone the hitter the
- 1:39:02pitch by Clay high and outside
- 1:39:04for a ball one ball no strikes.
- 1:39:07The outfield is shallow straight
- 1:39:09away for the pitcher's stone.
- 1:39:12Even with a bag and third is
- 1:39:14Oliver on the grass the pitch is
- 1:39:15fouled in back over the screen.
- 1:39:19One ball and one strike.
- 1:39:20One ball and one strike.
- 1:39:27The Yankees and the New York
- 1:39:29Nets in the 13th annual Mayor's
- 1:39:31Trophy game over a million
- 1:39:33three hundred thousand dollars
- 1:39:34has gone to this benefit game.
- 1:39:37The pitch fouled off again and
- 1:39:38back one ball and two strikes.
- 1:39:41And you know Frank that is a lot
- 1:39:43of money for a very very worthy
- 1:39:46cause.
- 1:39:46It certainly has a lot of kids
- 1:39:47wouldn't be playing baseball
- 1:39:48today in the New York area where
- 1:39:49it's not for the Yankees and the
- 1:39:51Mets giving up an off day in
- 1:39:52their regular season to play in
- 1:39:54the mayor's trophy game.
- 1:39:56Ken Clay looking in to get his
- 1:39:59sign from his catcher Rick
- 1:40:00Dempsey the Yankees lead it
- 1:40:02treated other bottom of the
- 1:40:04sixth place pitch high for a
- 1:40:06ball two balls and two strikes
- 1:40:09on the hitter George Stone and
- 1:40:15Clay looks and swings out of the
- 1:40:17wind up the 2 2 pitch and starts
- 1:40:19to pitch and Stone pops it up
- 1:40:21and foul ground racing over his
- 1:40:23Oliver as he got room he makes a
- 1:40:24one handed catch and Stone is
- 1:40:27retired and about to have a
- 1:40:29second.
- 1:40:36Mike Phillips playing shortstop
- 1:40:39tonight the hitter Mike was
- 1:40:41claimed on waivers for the
- 1:40:42Giants.
- 1:40:43He had an infield hit that
- 1:40:45Chris Chambliss made a great
- 1:40:46effort on.
- 1:40:47He was a little bit of a
- 1:40:49tough guy.
- 1:40:50He doled headlong knocked it
- 1:40:52down and then couldn't make the
- 1:40:54throw the throw that he made was
- 1:40:56off the mark and it was an
- 1:40:57infield hit for Phillips and
- 1:40:59then Phillips line to center
- 1:41:02field.
- 1:41:04So tonight he is one for two
- 1:41:06overall hitting 267 on the
- 1:41:08season.
- 1:41:09The pitch by Clay checks Wayne
- 1:41:11ground ball foul and Roy
- 1:41:13Macmillan who is a pretty fair
- 1:41:15shortstop in his day.
- 1:41:17He was a good player.
- 1:41:17He was a good player.
- 1:41:18He was a good player.
- 1:41:19He was a good player.
- 1:41:20Did he have ball player at his
- 1:41:21day.
- 1:41:22No he wasn't.
- 1:41:23I never saw Roy play not that he
- 1:41:25was before my time but I wasn't
- 1:41:26anywhere around where he did
- 1:41:27play.
- 1:41:28But he was fine shortstop the
- 1:41:310 1 pitch is in the dirt to
- 1:41:34close to low one ball one strike
- 1:41:37on the hitter.
- 1:41:39The Yankees are leading three to
- 1:41:40nothing.
- 1:41:41We're at the bottom of the six
- 1:41:42Mike Phillips a left handed hitter
- 1:41:45in the batter's box.
- 1:41:45He's just right.
- 1:41:47Four steps over to his left and
- 1:41:49he grabs it.
- 1:41:49And there's two men down in the
- 1:41:51bottom of the six Jack Heidemann
- 1:41:53will step in Jack Heidemann
- 1:42:02right handed hitter.
- 1:42:04The outfield for Heidemann goes
- 1:42:06back a little.
- 1:42:07Her medium depth straight away.
- 1:42:11The Yankees are leading three to
- 1:42:12nothing.
- 1:42:13The pitch to Heidemann hit high
- 1:42:14and there at a deep center field
- 1:42:16Walt Williams way back still
- 1:42:18going one has it gone to the
- 1:42:20warning track at the three
- 1:42:22hundred ninety six foot mark and
- 1:42:24the match to retire to the bottom
- 1:42:26of the six with no runs no hits
- 1:42:28dollars.
- 1:42:29Nobody left on base.

- 1:43:51Thank you very much.
- 1:43:52I said before it's good to be
- 1:43:53back and watching baseball again.
- 1:43:56Randy Tate has come on the pitch
- 1:43:58for the New York Mets right
- 1:43:59hander and Rick Dempsey leaves
- 1:44:01off of the Yankees.
- 1:44:02Dempsey has flied the right and
- 1:44:04grounded out the third right
- 1:44:05hand hitter against the right
- 1:44:06hand pitcher and the first
- 1:44:07strike.
- 1:44:08He takes a strike.
- 1:44:10Letter high George Stone pitch
- 1:44:15six innings he's charged with
- 1:44:16the three runs and the four
- 1:44:18Yankee hits now Randy Tate on
- 1:44:21and relief into the wind up the
- 1:44:22pitch to Dempsey swung on and
- 1:44:24lined over the middle center
- 1:44:25field base hit.
- 1:44:27Dempsey goes down to first base
- 1:44:29makes his turn and comes back in
- 1:44:31as Jean Klein's returns the
- 1:44:32infield and the Yankees have
- 1:44:34been in the game here is shot
- 1:44:41stop Jimmy Mason may sprouted
- 1:44:43into a double play started by
- 1:44:45Milner in the second inning.
- 1:44:46He grounded out the Milner again
- 1:44:47in the fifth another flipping to
- 1:44:50the pitcher Johnson covering
- 1:44:52there's the set the pitch to

- 1:45:19Yankees look rather than RBI
- 1:45:20double the Yankees lead for
- 1:45:22nothing.
- 1:45:25I'll tell you that Dempsey showed
- 1:45:27me some with his legs and he was
- 1:45:28going hard and you know he's
- 1:45:30been hitting the ball very very
- 1:45:33hard.
- 1:45:34He's got a four four six coming
- 1:45:35into the game and they two outs

- 1:52:01hide him in its second for the
- 1:52:03Yankees lead by the Yankees
- 1:52:05lead by the Yankees and then
- 1:52:06it's a strike by Brett Stanley
- 1:52:08it will be an error on the
- 1:52:12shortstop title on the shortstop
- 1:52:14Phillips on his throw and
- 1:52:17therefore no run about it.
- 1:52:23Ronnie Bloomberg steps in takes
- 1:52:27the first pitch outside.
- 1:52:29Check that.
- 1:52:30Must've got the outside corner
- 1:52:31out the infield a double played
- 1:52:33up the pitcher running breaking
- 1:52:34ball inside of the knees.
- 1:52:48Tade ready to one one pitch
- 1:52:50breaking ball is high and inside
- 1:52:52two balls and a strike to
- 1:52:53Bloomberg Ronnie has been up
- 1:52:57once and doubled down the right
- 1:52:59hander and the six innings now
- 1:53:05Tate steps off Stanley at third
- 1:53:19Penelope first the next pitch
- 1:53:20high and outside three balls and
- 1:53:24a strike again the runners laid
- 1:53:37out to the belt.
- 1:53:39Tate the pitch high and outside
- 1:53:42Bloomberg is on the bases are
- 1:53:43loaded Stanley at third Penelope
- 1:53:54second Bloomberg not first and
- 1:53:57the batter is Bob Oliver Oliver
- 1:54:01sent a sky high pop up to the
- 1:54:03third baseman Wayne Garrett his
- 1:54:04first time up all lined up by
- 1:54:13Tate his pitch over the head of
- 1:54:15the catcher all the way to the
- 1:54:16backstop.
- 1:54:17Here comes Stanley trying to
- 1:54:18score the same.
- 1:54:21Fred Stanley scores on a wild
- 1:54:23pitch that ball hit the glass
- 1:54:26gate directly behind home plate
- 1:54:29at the backstop bounce right
- 1:54:30back to Stearns the catcher he
- 1:54:34flipped the ball to his pitcher
- 1:54:36Randy Tate covering the plate.
- 1:54:38It was a close play but Stanley
- 1:54:39is safe.
- 1:54:40The Yankees lead six nothing and
- 1:54:42that's a wild pitch on the plate
- 1:54:49and I want the third and
- 1:54:50Bloomberg the second one out
- 1:54:58runner second and third.
- 1:54:59Now the infield comes in the
- 1:55:01full wind up the pitch to Oliver
- 1:55:02high again ball to look into the
- 1:55:15side and the line the kick the
- 1:55:17pitch to Oliver's swing and a
- 1:55:18miss that pitch was high again
- 1:55:21but Oliver evidently liked the
- 1:55:22looks of it next pitch swing and
- 1:55:33a miss on a high fastball to
- 1:55:35until one left field Dave
- 1:55:43Kingman has gone back just about
- 1:55:45as far as he can go against Bob
- 1:55:46Oliver to two pitch foul straight
- 1:55:49back Yankees in front six
- 1:55:55nothing here in the seventh
- 1:55:56inning scoring on a single by
- 1:56:01depth see a double by Mason a
- 1:56:03walk to Stanley an error by the
- 1:56:05shortstop and a wild pitch
- 1:56:10Oliver takes a breaking pitch
- 1:56:12strike three call that time
- 1:56:15Randy Tate dropped it in right
- 1:56:17around his knees so there are
- 1:56:19two down and Chris Chambliss the
- 1:56:23batter the attendance tonight
- 1:56:25here at Shea twenty six thousand
- 1:56:26four hundred and twenty seven so
- 1:56:28Don Valentino you are pretty
- 1:56:30close on your estimate.
- 1:56:33Not bad.
- 1:56:33I'm usually about ten thousand
- 1:56:35off tonight.
- 1:56:37I was a little closer.
- 1:56:39Chris Chambliss is one for three
- 1:56:41with two obvious left hand hitter
- 1:56:44swings and misses.
- 1:56:46He's got a little bit of a
- 1:56:47strike line.
- 1:56:50Walt Williams is on deck
- 1:56:51Chambliss is the eight Yankee
- 1:56:53to come to bat here in the
- 1:56:54seventh wind up by tape the kick
- 1:57:00in the pitch strike two call
- 1:57:02breaking pitch no balls two
- 1:57:04strikes to Chambliss paid ready
- 1:57:14to go fastball is bounced to the
- 1:57:16right side and on to the right
- 1:57:17field base here comes one run
- 1:57:20here comes Bloomberg he'll score
- 1:57:22the Yankees now lead eight to
- 1:57:23nothing on the throw Chambliss
- 1:57:26goes on the second Chris
- 1:57:32Chambliss plays two more runs
- 1:57:33with a bouncing single right
- 1:57:35field he went on the second base
- 1:57:37on the throw home as Lupinella
- 1:57:43hits the ground number seven
- 1:57:46Ron Bloomberg brought home with
- 1:57:48run number eight Chambliss now
- 1:57:53with four runs batted in on the
- 1:57:54ballgame half the Yankee total
- 1:57:56is eight nothing and now the
- 1:57:58Yankees have batted around as
- 1:57:59Walt Williams steps in Walt
- 1:58:06swings look one out of the
- 1:58:07shallow right center field that's
- 1:58:08going to be in for the base hit
- 1:58:09here comes Chambliss around
- 1:58:10third and the throwback the
- 1:58:13first base and then when he
- 1:58:14comes back to the base and
- 1:58:16Williams gets back Jean Klein's
- 1:58:19field of the ball looked like
- 1:58:21home so I could not get Chambliss
- 1:58:24then throw back the first base
- 1:58:26and Walt Williams had to scramble
- 1:58:28back in his hands and knees the
- 1:58:30crowd reacts as Yogi Berra goes
- 1:58:32to the mound the Yankees now
- 1:58:35lead nine nothing as Walt
- 1:58:37Williams gets his first base hit
- 1:58:39and his second run batted in on
- 1:58:40the ball Williams had a little
- 1:58:43looping fly ball to the shallow
- 1:58:45right center neither climbs nor
- 1:58:48hey so some who could get to it
- 1:58:52Yogi has had a pitcher warming
- 1:58:53up in the bullpen he will make a
- 1:58:55pitching change and right now
- 1:58:57the new pitcher is making his
- 1:58:59way to the mound.
- 1:59:04No doubt it was just not the
- 1:59:05night for Randy Tate but it's
- 1:59:07going to be the night for a lot
- 1:59:09of the New York area here at
- 1:59:11say how about some of those
- 1:59:12community nights.
- 1:59:13We've got quite a few of them
- 1:59:15coming up as you well know Frank
- 1:59:18tomorrow night is Greenwich
- 1:59:19Connecticut night and then on
- 1:59:22May 17th that'll be a Saturday
- 1:59:24night.
- 1:59:25I want to remind you it's going
- 1:59:26to be New York Islanders night
- 1:59:28the New York Islanders who did
- 1:59:30such an outstanding job in the
- 1:59:32National Hockey League playoffs
- 1:59:34will be honored here at Shea
- 1:59:35Stadium.
- 1:59:36Their general manager Bill
- 1:59:38Bader is here.
- 1:59:39Their coach Al Arbor the entire
- 1:59:42team Holley Chester the public
- 1:59:43relations director Mike Manter
- 1:59:45the vice president of the
- 1:59:47Nats and Islanders their entire
- 1:59:49organization will be honored
- 1:59:50here before the game on Saturday
- 1:59:53night and then on May 20th it's
- 1:59:56going to be flushing New York
- 1:59:58night here at Shea Stadium.
- 2:00:00The New York Mets will be Jerry
- 2:00:03Graham a right hander.
- 2:00:05I was just not the night for
- 2:00:07Randy Tate as he faced nine
- 2:00:09Yankee batters in the seventh
- 2:00:10inning got two of them out could
- 2:00:12have had the third out except
- 2:00:14for the drawing error by the
- 2:00:15shortstop Dave Phillips.
- 2:00:17So take will be charged with six
- 2:00:19runs four hits one walk one
- 2:00:23strike two and one strike two.
- 2:00:26And the New York Mets will be
- 2:00:27the Yankees one walk one strike
- 2:00:33out.
- 2:00:34Make that two walks one strike
- 2:00:36out and a wild fit.
- 2:00:40The Yankees nine runs eight hits
- 2:00:41and no errors the Mets no runs
- 2:00:43out a little impromptu music
- 2:00:59down below us in competition
- 2:01:01with the organ here at Shea
- 2:01:03Stadium tonight on the scoreboard
- 2:01:06Kansas City three Boston nothing
- 2:01:08the Red Sox are batting in the
- 2:01:09bottom half of the eight
- 2:01:10game two Milwaukee defeated
- 2:01:14Texas three to two and the
- 2:01:15completion of their suspended
- 2:01:16game from last night and Milwaukee

- 2:01:20nothing in the bottom half of
- 2:01:21the third in the National League
- 2:01:23this afternoon the Cubs beat
- 2:01:24Houston four to two Atlanta leads
- 2:01:27Montreal four nothing in the
- 2:01:28bottom half of the fourth inning
- 2:01:29and that game has been delayed
- 2:01:31by rain the Phillies beat
- 2:01:34Cincinnati six to three in their
- 2:01:35first game and are leading one
- 2:01:37to nothing in the nightcap at
- 2:01:38the top of the eighth Jerry Cram
- 2:01:49and the regular National League
- 2:01:50season it fits four innings in
- 2:01:51three games a record of 0 and 1
- 2:01:55allowing six hits and three
- 2:01:57earned runs first man to face
- 2:01:59him for the Yankees will be Rick
- 2:02:01Dempsey and Dempsey started it
- 2:02:04all off with a single to center
- 2:02:07field since then the Yankees
- 2:02:09have scored six times here in
- 2:02:11the seventh inning and lead nine
- 2:02:12nothing first pitch to Dempsey
- 2:02:15fastball is over for a strike
- 2:02:17Miller holding Williams on at
- 2:02:19first base Cram starts his
- 2:02:28stretch into the belt the kick
- 2:02:30the pitch Dempsey swings it's a
- 2:02:32sharp grounder at shortstop
- 2:02:34Phillips is up with it flips to
- 2:02:35the high demand for the third
- 2:02:37out to retire the side but the
- 2:02:39Yankees in the inning come up
- 2:02:42with six runs four hits there
- 2:02:44was a matter and one man left
- 2:02:47on base in the middle of the
- 2:02:49seventh that's the Yankees nine
- 2:02:51and the Mets nothing.

- 2:04:16OK.
- 2:04:18I'm at it's going to be Jean
- 2:04:20Klein's leading off for the New
- 2:04:22York Mets as we go to the bottom
- 2:04:24half of the seventh inning.
- 2:04:27Why is the right hand batter
- 2:04:35lines in the regular season was
- 2:04:36batting one eleven.
- 2:04:39He had three singles for twenty
- 2:04:40seven trips and the first pitch
- 2:04:44going from Ken play a fastball
- 2:04:46to the inside corner strike one
- 2:04:58next but breaking pitch high one
- 2:05:01and one on deck for the Mets
- 2:05:05right the other Haysu Salou
- 2:05:13play ready kicks and fires
- 2:05:15batting a fastball is it right
- 2:05:17back to the box base in the
- 2:05:18center field.
- 2:05:20Don't find his on with a lead
- 2:05:22off single for the Mets
- 2:05:29Pace those hello will be
- 2:05:30batting for the first time.
- 2:05:36I recall the story Pace's hello
- 2:05:39was out of baseball back at his
- 2:05:43home and he got a phone call
- 2:05:44from the Mets and he said
- 2:05:45certainly he's hitting 278 for
- 2:05:48the regular season right hand
- 2:05:49batter and he takes high and
- 2:05:51inside ball one.
- 2:05:54My knowledge Haysu says the
- 2:05:55youngest of the three allure
- 2:05:57brothers one all put long inside
- 2:06:04to the right hand hitter.
- 2:06:09They go in this order.
- 2:06:10Felipe the elder Matty the
- 2:06:14middle brother and he says the
- 2:06:15youngest two balls and no
- 2:06:19strikes and the pitch swing and
- 2:06:23a miss one so hard he went down
- 2:06:27on one knee Yankees lead at nine
- 2:06:33nothing bottom half of the seventh
- 2:06:34inning.
- 2:06:34Pitch swung out hit in the air
- 2:06:36to right center field may drop
- 2:06:38to the base and does Bloomberg
- 2:06:40touch it off in the gap turns
- 2:06:41around fires but his throw is
- 2:06:43way off the mark as Haysu goes
- 2:06:45out at a second base and they'll
- 2:06:48give him a double on that.
- 2:06:49Gene Klein goes to third so
- 2:07:07quickly the Mets have two men
- 2:07:09on with nobody out and the
- 2:07:10batter is John Miller who has
- 2:07:11gone all the way at first base.
- 2:07:13He's got one for two with no
- 2:07:22other up there.
- 2:07:22Second baseman Fred Stanley goes
- 2:07:24back in the grass.
- 2:07:25Chambliss back to the grass
- 2:07:27guarding the line and the pitch
- 2:07:29swung out and looked down the
- 2:07:30left field line hurrying on for
- 2:07:32Panella still going.
- 2:07:33He's there makes a one handed
- 2:07:34catch.
- 2:07:35Here comes the runner for the
- 2:07:36plate.
- 2:07:37Clines the throw and he's out
- 2:07:40at home on the throw by Panella
- 2:07:43the throw came through the
- 2:07:44Dempsey.
- 2:07:45He stepped up the line about one
- 2:07:47stride took the throw Dole that
- 2:07:50climbs and tagged him out and
- 2:07:53you have to feel that is not a
- 2:07:55good gamble when you're
- 2:07:56trailing by nine run.
- 2:08:02That is the second double play
- 2:08:03for the Yankees both of them
- 2:08:05involving an outfielder Bobby
- 2:08:07Bonds threw out John Miller back
- 2:08:09in the second inning.
- 2:08:19In comes Garrett and the pitch
- 2:08:21to on his wall from Ken play.
- 2:08:32The set the pitch must have been
- 2:08:35low looked like it had the play
- 2:08:36two balls and no strikes back in
- 2:08:39the second inning.
- 2:08:41Garrett lined out the Bobby
- 2:08:42Bonds and Bonds double Miller
- 2:08:44off first.
- 2:08:52All three comes in low three
- 2:08:54balls and no strikes.
- 2:09:00Garrett tonight is over to they
- 2:09:03play in the ball and the ball
- 2:09:06and the pitch high ball for
- 2:09:18here is Dave Kingman the
- 2:09:19left fielder struck out twice
- 2:09:20tonight and on deck the catcher
- 2:09:30John Stern Kingman right hand
- 2:09:34hitter play checks the runner at
- 2:09:37second a little on the pitch is
- 2:09:40foul straight back strike one
- 2:09:45Yankees lead nine nothing.
- 2:10:01There's the stretch by play
- 2:10:02the Yankees lead nine.
- 2:10:05Youngster deal pitches swung on
- 2:10:07and fouled off over toward the
- 2:10:08Yankee dugout down the third
- 2:10:09base line and fielded neatly in
- 2:10:12the dugout by manager Bill
- 2:10:13Burton runners laid away at first
- 2:10:27and second and the pitch to
- 2:10:28Kingman.
- 2:10:29And a messy struck him out
- 2:10:31of the dugout by the Yankees
- 2:10:33and that retires the side.
- 2:10:35Top of the mats in the seventh
- 2:10:36no runs two hits two men left at
- 2:10:38the end of seven it's the
- 2:10:40Yankees nine and the Mets
- 2:10:41nothing.

- 2:17:22let's pause 15 seconds for station
- 2:17:25identification this is the New York
- 2:17:26Yankee baseball network
- 2:17:33hi this is Luke and all of the new
- 2:17:35yorkian when I'm not playing baseball I
- 2:17:38listen to long John Neville and Tammy
- 2:17:40Jones right here on WMCA New York
- 2:17:43I'm gonna have to apologize to Dave
- 2:17:46Pagan and our listeners it was pagan who
- 2:17:49was in there pitching and I was calling
- 2:17:50in Ken play play his head so it's my
- 2:17:52mistake and I readily admit it and I beg
- 2:17:55your pardon so now we've got Kenny Clay
- 2:17:58in the ballgame well Frank is very easy
- 2:18:00to do not to defend you because you
- 2:18:03don't need any defense but for example
- 2:18:05Ken Clay's number 52 isn't even on the
- 2:18:08roster the program so I'm sure fans
- 2:18:11realize those things happen all right
- 2:18:13Kenny Clay is in there pitching now and
- 2:18:15again my apologies to Dave Pagan and our
- 2:18:18listeners the pagan went two innings
- 2:18:22gave up two hits no runs he walked one
- 2:18:25and struck out one and leading off for
- 2:18:29the New York Nets catcher John Stearns
- 2:18:31Ed Herman is now catching for the
- 2:18:34Yankees Eddie Leon is down at third
- 2:18:37let's see let me check that his
- 2:18:38Pepsi moved out of third base and Bob
- 2:18:42Oliver has gone over the first all right
- 2:18:45here's the pitch and Stearns takes it
- 2:18:47low for a ball so put Dempsey at third
- 2:18:50and Oliver over at first Herman catching
- 2:18:55and now we have Kenny Clay on the
- 2:18:56ballgame here's the pitch swung out and
- 2:18:58fouled back upstairs
- 2:19:01player right-hander as was pagan the
- 2:19:17kick and the fence swung out hit in the
- 2:19:19air to left field but not almost in his
- 2:19:21tracks waiting for it to come down and
- 2:19:23he's got it so there's one away
- 2:19:27Crane bull will bat now for cram Ed
- 2:19:35Crane bull batting for Jerry Cran
- 2:19:40Crane bull very popular among the
- 2:19:43Mets fans and very popular among all the
- 2:19:45folks who know it very likable young man
- 2:19:48left-hander and plays pitch to him is a
- 2:19:53call strike one Mike Phillips is on deck
- 2:20:01Dempsey playing him wide at third base
- 2:20:03and the next pitch swung on looked out
- 2:20:06over shortstop it's gonna drop for the
- 2:20:07base here look another cuts it off in the
- 2:20:09hole and left center and Crane bull is on
- 2:20:14that's nothing new for Crane bull he's
- 2:20:16been on quite a few times this season
- 2:20:18batting 308 in the regular season for
- 2:20:21the Mets
- 2:20:33the Mets have picked up their seventh
- 2:20:35base hit the Yankees lead 9 nothing we've
- 2:20:37got the score right and the pitch to
- 2:20:41Phillips comes in low for a ball
- 2:20:54the next pitch low ball to right hand
- 2:21:01pitching Ken clay left hand hitting Dave
- 2:21:04Phillips Crane bull at first Oliver
- 2:21:06playing behind the bag infield set for
- 2:21:10the double play and the pitch low again
- 2:21:12ball three
- 2:21:21three balls and no strikes one out
- 2:21:27Jack Heideman is on deck for the Mets
- 2:21:31and the three and oh pitch will be
- 2:21:33coming here it is it's inside ball for
- 2:21:38the Mets have to on
- 2:21:41Crane bull moving down to second Phillips
- 2:21:45on at first and Jack Heideman the
- 2:21:47batter
- 2:21:52item on a right hand batter Jean
- 2:21:55Klein's is on deck
- 2:22:08play looks down for his side checks
- 2:22:10back at second base the right handers
- 2:22:12pitch breaking ball is high one ball and
- 2:22:15no strikes and now Heideman steps out
- 2:22:20looks down a third base for a sign from
- 2:22:26the coach Eddie Yost
- 2:22:30which coming he takes a fastball over
- 2:22:34for a strike one and one Bloomberg
- 2:22:38plays him in a bit in right field
- 2:22:39Williams straight away of center and the
- 2:22:42same for Penelope left Mason and Stanley
- 2:22:45and Dempsey a third look for the ground
- 2:22:47ball the pitch to it he takes a strike
- 2:22:52call at its two and two they could want
- 2:22:55to do
- 2:23:01now play walks off the pitchers mound
- 2:23:04puts his fingers to his lips rubs up the
- 2:23:06baseball
- 2:23:12has the side drops the hands and the
- 2:23:16ball is out of the pitch swung on foul
- 2:23:19back and that will be out of play
- 2:23:21Herman came back looking for it but it
- 2:23:23falls on the screen
- 2:23:34down the Yankee clubhouse before the game
- 2:23:36and I did not see Dave Fagan and I did
- 2:23:38not know he had been called up for this
- 2:23:40game I knew that they had called Bob
- 2:23:42Johnson and Kenny Clay and I talked to
- 2:23:44him he kicks any deals pitches popped up
- 2:23:47foul again toward the seats outside of
- 2:23:49first
- 2:23:56play had compiled a record of two wins
- 2:23:58and no losses over at West Haven he had
- 2:24:02started four games
- 2:24:0526 innings 24 hits eight walks 15
- 2:24:08strikeouts an earned run average of
- 2:24:1115 one two pitch it is high a fastball
- 2:24:15to and to
- 2:24:21Yankees lead 9 nothing
- 2:24:30play takes the sign from Ed Herman
- 2:24:32seems to have trouble picking it up
- 2:24:35now he's ready and the 2-2 pitch it is
- 2:24:39high and inside three balls two strikes
- 2:24:43on height of them the rain did not stop
- 2:24:46in Montreal and that game has been
- 2:24:48postponed and washed out a four nothing
- 2:24:50Atlanta lead in the bottom half of the
- 2:24:52fourth inning so they are postponed in
- 2:24:55Montreal play ready to work kicks and
- 2:25:07deals swaying at a mess he struck him
- 2:25:11out play just reared back and ripped a
- 2:25:14fastball and hide him and couldn't find
- 2:25:16it so to down runners are first and
- 2:25:20second in the batter Jean Klein's
- 2:25:25client single his first time up
- 2:25:29and then was thrown out of the plate
- 2:25:32trying to score from first base on
- 2:25:35haste's rather trying to score from
- 2:25:42third base on John Miller's fly ball
- 2:25:45to vanilla there's a ball hit in the
- 2:25:46other right field drops in front of
- 2:25:48Bloomberg and the Mets may get their
- 2:25:50first round the throw goes into second
- 2:25:52base Crain full score and it's a nine to
- 2:25:54one ball game clients delivers his
- 2:25:57second base hit little looper into
- 2:26:02shallow right field Bloomberg coming in
- 2:26:04could not get to it they said run
- 2:26:07battered and in the Mets are on the
- 2:26:09scoreboard on the third base Mike
- 2:26:14Phillips and with two outs runners at
- 2:26:16first and third the batter will be
- 2:26:18pesos aloo in the seventh with a low
- 2:26:27that second and clients at third
- 2:26:34first pitch oh and it hit him in the
- 2:26:36helmet he has hit on the batting
- 2:26:38helmet so hard the ball bounces all the
- 2:26:40way down to third base where Dempsey
- 2:26:42grabs it and Yogi Bearer quickly comes
- 2:26:44out there for those helmets are so
- 2:26:50great he was hit right in the helmet by
- 2:26:56a pitch and now gets up and walks down
- 2:27:02to first base evidently assuring Yogi
- 2:27:05Bearer and the trainer that he's OK
- 2:27:08so a little hit by the pitch goes to
- 2:27:10first base clients moves on down to
- 2:27:14second the Mets have the bases loaded
- 2:27:16the batter will be Miller we started
- 2:27:19saying the seventh inning with clients
- 2:27:21at third and a little at second John
- 2:27:24Miller got an opposite field fly ball
- 2:27:27Panela in left took it clients tagged
- 2:27:31up a third tried to score after the
- 2:27:33catch and Panela's perfect throw to
- 2:27:35Rick Dempsey cut down client
- 2:27:46so Ken way faces a bases loaded to our
- 2:27:49situation Miller left hand hitter is
- 2:27:53that two for three and he takes low
- 2:27:56and he's got a ball Phillips of third
- 2:28:03and clients at second paces a little at
- 2:28:06first ball wind up by play his pitch
- 2:28:09Miller swings it's a fly ball to deep
- 2:28:11center well Williams on his horse going
- 2:28:13back he won't get it it's over his head
- 2:28:15into the wall one run is in two runs
- 2:28:17around the third run will score as
- 2:28:19Mason cuts the throw off and it is now
- 2:28:22a nine to four ballgame a bases
- 2:28:25loaded with a strike being doubled by
- 2:28:27Miller over the head of center fielder
- 2:28:30wall Williams
- 2:28:46now Wayne Garrett comes on the Mets
- 2:28:52have come to life here in the eighth
- 2:28:53run having been shut out through seven
- 2:28:56they have now scored four times here in
- 2:28:58the eighth runner at second two down
- 2:29:00Wayne Garrett is the eighth man to come
- 2:29:02up
- 2:29:10the pitch from play on the outside
