Speaker 1: What's up everyone, and welcome back to the program. One
• 0:04
Speaker 1: of the burning questions when it comes to Brian Colberger
• 0:07
Speaker 1: and what happened in Moscow is what was the motivation
• 0:10
Speaker 1: behind it? What was his motive? Why would somebody decide
• 0:14
Speaker 1: to go into a house and stab for college students
• 0:18
Speaker 1: seemingly for no reason? And the answer is, we just
• 0:22
Speaker 1: don't know, at least not for sure, but we do
• 0:26
Speaker 1: have some theories. And in today's episode, we're going to
• 0:29
Speaker 1: be taking a look at an article from People and
• 0:32
Speaker 1: hearing from some lawyers about what they think the motive
• 0:35
Speaker 1: could have been that drove Brian Colberger to murder the
• 0:39
Speaker 1: Idaho for Like I said, this article was published by
• 0:43
Speaker 1: People and the headline Here's what experts and lawyers have
• 0:47
Speaker 1: said about Brian Colberger's motive. This article was authored by
• 0:51
Speaker 1: Jordana Comitter and Caroline Blair. Because Brian Colberger accepted a
• 0:58
Speaker 1: plea deal in the killing of University of Idaho students,
• 1:02
Speaker 1: he avoided the death penalty a trial and never had
• 1:05
Speaker 1: the state a motive. And I remember at the time,
• 1:09
Speaker 1: I was not a big fan of this plea deal,
• 1:12
Speaker 1: and this is why I know that there'd be some
• 1:14
Speaker 1: shit happening later on down the road always is with
• 1:16
Speaker 1: somebody like Coburger. When you have somebody who's a narcissist,
• 1:21
Speaker 1: this is what you get. He's probably taking great joy
• 1:24
Speaker 1: and making the family suffer, especially after the way Kayley
• 1:28
Speaker 1: Gon'salfa's sister laid into his bitch ass during the impact statements.
• 1:33
Speaker 1: So you know that he's smarting over that and his
• 1:36
Speaker 1: little bitch boy pride can't take it. So what does
• 1:40
Speaker 1: he have left to him? This is it? How can
• 1:43
Speaker 1: I make their lives miserable once again? In my opinion,
• 1:47
Speaker 1: that's what it comes down to. On November thirteenth, twenty
• 1:52
Speaker 1: twenty two, Coburger, who was a PhD student at the
• 1:55
Speaker 1: nearby Washington State University, drove to an off campus home
• 1:58
Speaker 1: in Moscow, Idaho, where five female students lived. He proceeded
• 2:03
Speaker 1: to fatally stabb three of the roommates, Kaylee Gonsalvez, Madison Mogan,
• 2:08
Speaker 1: and Xana Kernodle, as well Askernodle's boyfriend Ethan Chapin. And
• 2:12
Speaker 1: I remember in the direct aftermath of this, when we
• 2:15
Speaker 1: were covering it, all the crazy theories that popped up.
• 2:18
Speaker 1: It was a cartel hit. It was over drugs, the
• 2:21
Speaker 1: FBI was involved in the actual hit. You know, all
• 2:24
Speaker 1: kinds of crazy stuff, And my initial reaction was that
• 2:27
Speaker 1: somebody that was close to them was responsible, somebody's ex boyfriend,
• 2:31
Speaker 1: something like that. But as things progressed, it was rather
• 2:34
Speaker 1: obvious that nobody that was close to them in their
• 2:37
Speaker 1: lives was responsible for this, at least according to the evidence.
• 2:41
Speaker 1: But I remember all of the allegations being thrown around
• 2:44
Speaker 1: at the time, including by some knucklehead who is some
• 2:47
Speaker 1: kind of like psychic or tarot card reader or whatever
• 2:50
Speaker 1: over on TikTok. She ended up getting sued by the
• 2:53
Speaker 1: way after claiming that one of the professors was involved
• 2:57
Speaker 1: in these murders. But I think that the Coburger case
• 3:01
Speaker 1: was the testing ground, if you will, for these weirdos
• 3:04
Speaker 1: that come out and just make shit up. It took
• 3:08
Speaker 1: authorities over a month to arrest Colburger via DNA evidence
• 3:12
Speaker 1: in Pennsylvania. He was charged with four counts of first
• 3:14
Speaker 1: degree murder, but maintained his innocence. Ahead of his schedule
• 3:19
Speaker 1: August twenty twenty five trial, Colberger changed his plea and
• 3:22
Speaker 1: agreed to a deal in which he pleaded guilty to
• 3:25
Speaker 1: the murders. To avoid the death penalty. The deal also
• 3:28
Speaker 1: meant Colburger never went a trial where a possible motive
• 3:31
Speaker 1: could have been exposed, and that's why the judge should
• 3:34
Speaker 1: have made him say clearly what he did. He should
• 3:37
Speaker 1: have had to give a statement claiming that he killed
• 3:40
Speaker 1: everybody and not just say yes. They should have embarrassed
• 3:44
Speaker 1: him in that courtroom. Then again, knowing Brian Colberger's bitch ass,
• 3:48
Speaker 1: he wouldn't have been embarrassed. One year after he received
• 3:51
Speaker 1: four consecutive life sentences, Coburger filed a petition to reverse
• 3:54
Speaker 1: his plea deal and obtain a trial by alleging his
• 3:57
Speaker 1: attorneys withheld exculpatory discovery. Colburger's fighting is guilty plea from
• 4:02
Speaker 1: behind bars at the Idaho Maximum Security Institution. They should
• 4:07
Speaker 1: have just thrown him in general population been done with it.
• 4:10
Speaker 1: I'm so tired of these people like Brian Colberger or
• 4:13
Speaker 1: other serial killers getting some kind of decent life behind bars.
• 4:18
Speaker 1: I don't care if they have notoriety, and now that
• 4:20
Speaker 1: they're convicted, well they should be with everybody else. Why
• 4:23
Speaker 1: should this state be on the hook for more money
• 4:25
Speaker 1: to put Brian Colberger in some secluded part of the jail,
• 4:29
Speaker 1: fuck that, and fuck him. In the near four years
• 4:34
Speaker 1: since Colberger killed the four students, he has not spoken
• 4:37
Speaker 1: about a possible motive, but experts and lawyers have shared
• 4:40
Speaker 1: their theories. The Netflix three part docuseries The Idaho Murders
• 4:45
Speaker 1: College Nightmare, which premiered on July twenty ninth, revisits the tragedy.
• 4:49
Speaker 1: So what of experts and lawyers said about Brian Colberger's motive?
• 4:53
Speaker 1: Here's what we know and I watched the documentary, and
• 4:57
Speaker 1: if you know the basics of the case, it's just
• 4:59
Speaker 1: a fresher course basically, nothing new, nothing groundbreaking, but certainly
• 5:03
Speaker 1: well done and worth a watch if you're interested in
• 5:06
Speaker 1: the topic. What of experts and lawyers said about Brian
• 5:09
Speaker 1: Colberger's motives? Daring Coberger's plea hearing in early July twenty
• 5:14
Speaker 1: twenty five, Leyta County Prosecutor Bill Thompson detailed the knight
• 5:18
Speaker 1: of the murders and said there was no evidence there
• 5:21
Speaker 1: was any sexual component or sexual assault on any of
• 5:24
Speaker 1: the victims. I want to make that clear so there
• 5:27
Speaker 1: is no speculation. And if that's what he said, that's
• 5:30
Speaker 1: what he said. I have a hard time believing that
• 5:33
Speaker 1: wasn't the motivation. My running theory is that he was
• 5:36
Speaker 1: infatuated with Matti Mogan, whether he saw her at the
• 5:39
Speaker 1: Mad Greek or wherever, and that became the impetus, right.
• 5:44
Speaker 1: But when he got there, he wasn't expecting Kaylee to
• 5:46
Speaker 1: be there, and once she was there, it threw him
• 5:49
Speaker 1: into a rage. How dare you interrupt my time with Mattie?
• 5:53
Speaker 1: You know that kind of thing, And that's why you
• 5:55
Speaker 1: see the brutality that we saw with Kaylee. And that's
• 5:59
Speaker 1: always in my speculation. And again, look, just my speculation.
• 6:03
Speaker 1: I don't know for sure, nobody does, but I think
• 6:07
Speaker 1: that's the most logical way to go about it, right,
• 6:10
Speaker 1: the most logical path to travel down. However, days later,
• 6:15
Speaker 1: Steve Gonsalves, whose daughter Kaylee was one of the four victims,
• 6:18
Speaker 1: shared during an appearance on Newsnight's Banfield that he strongly
• 6:23
Speaker 1: disagrees with Thompson's remarks based on information he allegedly got
• 6:27
Speaker 1: from individuals involved in the investigation. People got so angry
• 6:31
Speaker 1: at what was happening in that courtroom that they would
• 6:33
Speaker 1: literally pick up their phone and call us and say,
• 6:36
Speaker 1: this is what is on Brian's phone, This is what
• 6:39
Speaker 1: he was searching this was sexually motivated. Steve claimed, I
• 6:42
Speaker 1: don't care what Thompson said, And look, man, I happen
• 6:45
Speaker 1: to agree. The prosecution's not going to give us everything
• 6:48
Speaker 1: they have. They're going to give us what they think
• 6:50
Speaker 1: they can prove. And if they can't prove a sexual
• 6:53
Speaker 1: component of this, they're not going to just float that.
• 6:57
Speaker 1: That's not how this works. But my opinion, and you
• 7:01
Speaker 1: can take that down to the local corner store with
• 7:03
Speaker 1: a buck fifty and get coffee. But in my opinion,
• 7:06
Speaker 1: there's no doubt that there was some kind of sexual motivation.
• 7:10
Speaker 1: Did he go through with that and sexually abuse these girls?
• 7:13
Speaker 1: According to the evidence that were privy to he didn't.
• 7:17
Speaker 1: But does that mean that wasn't the motivation? I don't
• 7:20
Speaker 1: think so. Since the gag order in the case had
• 7:23
Speaker 1: just been removed, Steve was able to share more about
• 7:26
Speaker 1: why he disagreed, alleging that somebody involved in the investigation
• 7:30
Speaker 1: informed him of Coburger's weird, weird porn fetishes, which allegedly
• 7:35
Speaker 1: included drunk, pasted out girls and gaging girls and other
• 7:39
Speaker 1: very disturbing searches. Now, Brian Colberger was very smart when
• 7:43
Speaker 1: it comes to covering his tracks, and he was able
• 7:46
Speaker 1: to get rid of a lot of that digital evidence.
• 7:48
Speaker 1: And look, Brian Colberger is a sophisticated criminal right in
• 7:52
Speaker 1: at least one sense covering his tracks because the fact
• 7:56
Speaker 1: that there was no DNA or blood found in his
• 7:58
Speaker 1: car leads me to believe that he had the car
• 8:01
Speaker 1: set up to make sure he captured any kind of shedding.
• 8:04
Speaker 1: And when you're a criminology, you know, student PhD, that's
• 8:08
Speaker 1: not the most difficult thing in the world to do.
• 8:12
Speaker 1: So I always was under the impression that Brian Colberger
• 8:15
Speaker 1: had the car set you know, whether it was plastic,
• 8:18
Speaker 1: whatever he had put down was for the purpose of
• 8:21
Speaker 1: making sure that no DNA evidence was found in the car.
• 8:24
Speaker 1: And they pulled that car apart down to the studs,
• 8:27
Speaker 1: they didn't find anything. Those are two things that were
• 8:30
Speaker 1: part of that crime scene. So for Thompson to say
• 8:32
Speaker 1: that there was no sexual assault, Steve claimed adding, of
• 8:35
Speaker 1: course there wasn't evidence of sexual assault. He didn't have
• 8:38
Speaker 1: enough time. Somebody came up there, and I agree with that. Look,
• 8:42
Speaker 1: I think it was because Kaylee was there and he
• 8:45
Speaker 1: didn't expect her to be there, and the fact that
• 8:47
Speaker 1: she was just threw everything into chaos. And let me
• 8:51
Speaker 1: tell you what, Brian Coberger's real lucky that the two
• 8:55
Speaker 1: roommates that were downstairs weren't men, because I have a
• 8:58
Speaker 1: hard time believing that any dude who sees another dude
• 9:00
Speaker 1: walk into their house with the ski mask isn't going
• 9:03
Speaker 1: to give him that business. You come into my house
• 9:06
Speaker 1: with a ski mask, buddy, it's going to be a
• 9:08
Speaker 1: long fucking day. And the one promise I can make
• 9:10
Speaker 1: you is you're not leaving through the same door that
• 9:12
Speaker 1: you arrived in. But unfortunately that wasn't the case in Idaho,
• 9:17
Speaker 1: and I think that was all by design. I think
• 9:19
Speaker 1: Brian Colberger was staking this place out, knew exactly the
• 9:23
Speaker 1: house he wanted to hit, might have been looking at
• 9:25
Speaker 1: other houses too, right maybe, but found the house he wanted,
• 9:29
Speaker 1: and like usual, he fixated on it. And I think
• 9:32
Speaker 1: the driving force behind that was Madison Mogen. Days later,
• 9:40
Speaker 1: Colberger was given a final opportunity to speak before his
• 9:42
Speaker 1: sentencing by an Idaho judge. Instead of defending himself, he
• 9:46
Speaker 1: uttered just three words, my respectfully decline. Then he left
• 9:50
Speaker 1: the courtroom without acknowledging his mother and sister. Members of
• 9:54
Speaker 1: the Technology forensic evidence team that investigated Colberger's cell phone
• 9:58
Speaker 1: and computer explained in the Idaho Murders College Nightmare that is,
• 10:02
Speaker 1: lack of contacts, internet searches and apps led them to
• 10:06
Speaker 1: believe he was cautious and taking extra steps not to
• 10:09
Speaker 1: get caught. Well, I don't have very many contacts in
• 10:11
  Speaker 1: my phone. I don't know if that's a big tell.
• 10:16
Speaker 1: I mean, I don't use apps really either, to tell
• 10:18
Speaker 1: you the truth. But I'm also forty six years old.
• 10:22
Speaker 1: These younger kids a little different, right, I'm sure you
• 10:25
Speaker 1: know college age kids. I know when I was in college,
• 10:28
Speaker 1: forget it, my phone never stopped bringing. So it is
• 10:32
Speaker 1: a bit odd when we're talking about a college age dude.
• 10:35
Speaker 1: But Brian Colberger was a weird dude as it is
• 10:38
Speaker 1: without all this other stuff, right, not exactly the kind
• 10:41
Speaker 1: of guy that's showing up and it's going to be
• 10:43
Speaker 1: the life of the party, breaking out doing the robot.
• 10:50
Speaker 1: In addition to forensic pathologist and former Chief Medical Examiner
• 10:54
Speaker 1: of Onondaga County, Mary Jumbalick, MD told people that Sheep
• 11:00
Speaker 1: leaves his motive related to the killing the three women
• 11:02
Speaker 1: differently than the one male victim. The three young women
• 11:06
Speaker 1: show a pattern of overkill by the perpetrator, jum Bellick
• 11:09
Speaker 1: told people in February of twenty twenty six, while explaining
• 11:14
Speaker 1: that overkill is when the infliction of injuries exceeds the
• 11:17
Speaker 1: force necessary to cause death and can indicate an intense
• 11:21
Speaker 1: emotional rage. And that is for sure. There was a
• 11:25
Speaker 1: ton of overkill, and like I said earlier, I think
• 11:27
Speaker 1: that was brought on by the fact that Kaylee was
• 11:29
Speaker 1: there that launched this dude directly into orbit. Profilers say
• 11:34
Speaker 1: that this type of injury indicates a strong motive and
• 11:36
Speaker 1: a need to dominate. Why hasn't Brian Colberger's motive been revealed?
• 11:41
Speaker 1: In addition to Coburger not disclosing his motive for the murders,
• 11:44
Speaker 1: prosecutors have also been unable to find evidence to suggest
• 11:48
Speaker 1: a particular reason for the killings. After Coberger took the
• 11:52
Speaker 1: plea deal. In early July twenty twenty five, Thompson presented
• 11:55
Speaker 1: some of the evidence gathered throughout the case and shared
• 11:58
Speaker 1: that they had failed to locate the murder weapon. That's
• 12:01
Speaker 1: not shocking. He took that long ass drive home. You
• 12:06
Speaker 1: know how much ground you have to cover to find
• 12:08
Speaker 1: that murder weapon? You want to talk about a needle
• 12:11
  Speaker 1: in a haystack. We're talking about a needle in a
• 12:14
Speaker 1: needle stack. So I never had very much confidence that
• 12:18
Speaker 1: they'd find the weapon. And again, we're talking about Colberger,
• 12:21
Speaker 1: who is a sophisticated criminal compared to most of the killers.
• 12:25
Speaker 1: We talk about a guy that actually knows the process
• 12:28
Speaker 1: at the very least. When it came time to discuss motive,
• 12:33
Speaker 1: Thompson shared that investigators found evidence of Colberger's phone pinging
• 12:37
Speaker 1: the cellular tower in the area of the victims off
• 12:39
Speaker 1: campus home multiple times in the months leading up to
• 12:43
Speaker 1: the murders. However, Thompson said, prosecutors still cannot connect the
• 12:47
Speaker 1: killer to his victims. We do not have evidence that
• 12:50
Speaker 1: they had direct contact with the home, but we can
• 12:53
Speaker 1: put his phone in that area at those times, Thompson said,
• 12:57
Speaker 1: And folks, remember, it's not just one piece of evidence,
• 13:00
Speaker 1: it's the preponderance of all of it put together. And
• 13:03
Speaker 1: when you put all the evidence they have against Colburger together,
• 13:05
Speaker 1: I have no idea how anyone could think the dude's innocent.
• 13:11
Speaker 1: Will Brian Colberger's motives ever be revealed In exchange for
• 13:14
Speaker 1: Coburger's plea prosecutors agreed that they would not seek the
• 13:17
Speaker 1: death penalty. Instead. On July twenty third, twenty twenty five,
• 13:21
Speaker 1: Colburger received four life sentences plus ten years for a
• 13:25
Speaker 1: burglary charge, and two hundred and seventy thousand in fines
• 13:29
Speaker 1: and civil penalties. He's the only one that has the why,
• 13:33
Speaker 1: Idaho State Police Lieutenant Darren Gilbertson told ABC News in
• 13:38
Speaker 1: July of twenty twenty five, and oftentimes that why. It
• 13:41
Speaker 1: may only make sense to him, And I think that's fair.
• 13:44
Speaker 1: I know that's not what people want to hear, right,
• 13:46
Speaker 1: And I wish I could tell you something different. I
• 13:48
Speaker 1: wish I had some kind of key to the universe
• 13:50
Speaker 1: where I could find all this information out. But the
• 13:53
Speaker 1: truth is, unless this bitch ass, Brian Colberger ever speaks up,
• 13:57
Speaker 1: we're never gonna know. However, Burger's petition to reverse his
• 14:01
Speaker 1: plea and request a trial could potentially drum up further
• 14:04
Speaker 1: information on a motive. Coberger alleged that he was convinced
• 14:09
Speaker 1: to falsely confess through coercion, disinformation, false promises, and withholding
• 14:14
Speaker 1: of exculpatory evidence. Although Coberger claimed his attorneys failed to
• 14:18
Speaker 1: tell him about unknown hair and Ethan Chapin's hands. He
• 14:22
Speaker 1: isn't guaranteed a trial. Former federal prosecutor Nimo Rockmani told
• 14:26
Speaker 1: people that he believes this petition is going to be denied.
• 14:31
Speaker 1: I think so too, But like I said, if they
• 14:33
Speaker 1: appoint a lawyer that could tell us something different, and
• 14:36
Speaker 1: that's what they did. So we'll just follow along and
• 14:39
Speaker 1: we'll see where it goes. Right, We'll see what they do,
• 14:41
Speaker 1: We'll see what Coburger does, and we'll see how the
• 14:43
Speaker 1: state responds. If the defense knew the prosecution failed to
• 14:49
Speaker 1: disclose the existence of this hair or any other exculpatory material,
• 14:53
Speaker 1: they would have filed their own motion because that was
• 14:55
Speaker 1: a way they could have gotten the death penalty struck
• 14:58
Speaker 1: from the case. ROCKMANI said, Ian Colberger would be free rolling.
• 15:02
Speaker 1: He would roll the dice and go to trial. And honestly,
• 15:05
Speaker 1: as much as I don't think he's going to get
• 15:07
Speaker 1: a new trial, I almost hope he does. So this
• 15:09
Speaker 1: time they can go all the way and give his
• 15:12
Speaker 1: bitch ask what he deserves at the end of it.
• 15:15
Speaker 1: And yo, I remain open to new evidence. If there's
• 15:18
Speaker 1: something new that points in a different direction, I'd love
• 15:20
Speaker 1: to see it, but as of now, there's no new evidence,
• 15:23
Speaker 1: nothing that would make anyone who sits on a Jerry
• 15:26
Speaker 1: especially think that Brian Colberger is not the man who
• 15:29
Speaker 1: did this. So I'll keep an eye on the docket
• 15:31
Speaker 1: and when we have some new filings, and obviously when
• 15:33
Speaker 1: there's new information, we'll get that added to the catalog.
• 15:37
Speaker 1: All the information that goes with this episode can be
• 15:39
Speaker 1: found in the description box.
