- 0:07[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you for having me.
- 0:08[SPEAKER_01]: You're very welcome.
- 0:09[SPEAKER_01]: I you know, I'm I'm such a bad host when it comes to these intros especially for somebody like you.
- 0:16[SPEAKER_01]: You were a lot of hats.
- 0:18[SPEAKER_01]: You're like Jamie Foxx.
- 0:20[SPEAKER_01]: You have sing.
- 0:23[SPEAKER_01]: You dance.
- 0:24[SPEAKER_01]: You act.
- 0:25[SPEAKER_01]: You produce you direct.
- 0:27[SPEAKER_01]: you write, you do all these things and I want to shout out to a mutual friend of ours about when he's a director who told me about you a year ago and said you have to get milky on and as I told you in the pre-enter you I was like a little nervous to get you on because I was like I gotta get my bearings on you've done so much in such a short time
- 0:55[SPEAKER_00]: Wow, that's a crazy intro, thank you so much.
- 0:58[SPEAKER_00]: You're gonna be sound like a larger than life figure, but I'm down to earth, don't worry.
- 1:04[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you for that interview.
- 1:05[SPEAKER_00]: I'm about amazing so I'm glad.
- 1:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's about.
- 1:09[SPEAKER_01]: Um, I wanted to start with with this thing that's because it's personal to me and then just I almost cried a little bit when I watched this one clip that you made and it's the clip that you did about your dad because I'm a dad and I'm a daughter and I'm like
- 1:27[SPEAKER_01]: damn, you wrote about, um, you getting drunk with him and talking with him for five hours.
- 1:33[SPEAKER_01]: And that like hit me, like a ton of breaks.
- 1:37[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, oh my god, how does she get to understand, like, um, you probably don't calculate these things.
- 1:44[SPEAKER_01]: You just, you just operating out of like, um, just being present moment.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_01]: But it hit me like a ton of bricks.
- 1:50[SPEAKER_01]: And I wanted to ask, um,
- 1:54[SPEAKER_01]: When you think of yourself as a daughter because I want to encourage my children to drink with me.
- 2:01[SPEAKER_01]: You know what to ask you, and this is a way to get some color out of you and for the audience to understand without, you know, asking the basic questions.
- 2:10[SPEAKER_01]: I just, so as a dad, I'm like, how do I ask me milky, you know, when you have drinks with your children like that, how do I know that I'm not encouraging them to go buck wild one day, you know, because as a dad, I went to have some control, but I also, I really
- 2:31[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, we're via of course.
- 2:36[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, yes, I'm not talking about just drinking.
- 2:38[SPEAKER_01]: I want to do some degenerate things in my Instagram I mean things that are appropriate like you know getting drunk for like 10 hours you did five But I want to do like 10 hours of like guys.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_01]: I want to keep drinking with them, right?
- 2:51[SPEAKER_01]: So tell me a little bit about how that sort of like that mindset as a daughter and how that made you feel when your father really opened up and, you know, I'm sure that's not the first time, right?
- 3:05[SPEAKER_01]: That's impossible.
- 3:06[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, we, we, we've trained together before such a personal as we question.
- 3:11[SPEAKER_00]: I think, you know, I grew up as very much a goody two shoes.
- 3:17[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I was in the students against destructive decisions.
- 3:21[SPEAKER_00]: Club, I was president of that club where I was like, don't drink at prom.
- 3:25[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't have alcohol until- No, you're not joking.
- 3:28[SPEAKER_00]: This is me.
- 3:28[SPEAKER_00]: This is who I am.
- 3:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I've always been like pretty straight lacing.
- 3:35[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's just how my family raised me.
- 3:39[SPEAKER_00]: We just had really strong morals of wanting to be
- 3:45[SPEAKER_00]: a good person and like, uh, my brothers were incredible role models to they still don't drink to the stay.
- 3:51[SPEAKER_00]: Um, and then when I moved LA, I started drinking.
- 3:55[SPEAKER_00]: And I think, um, uh, to answer your question about like, not going back wide.
- 4:01[SPEAKER_00]: I won't tell you, which is a funny way to freeze it is something over the course of my relationship with my dad is the feeling of trust and him, you know, a lot of my choices and my lifestyle are, I can mention all, you know, I moved to LA, I chose a creative career, I pulled the answer, I do a lot of
- 4:25[SPEAKER_00]: You know, not necessarily what a father loves to hear, but I think what has maybe so comfortable is he like had trusted my decisions.
- 4:35[SPEAKER_00]: And like once me to be happy above everything else and that's what I've always been so thankful for my dad is I never feel like he's not going to love me for what I choose to do or share with him.
- 4:50[SPEAKER_00]: So whenever I got drunk with him for those five hours,
- 4:55[SPEAKER_00]: It's very special because I live a pretty, I don't want to say a life of solitude, but a lot of my life is spent in by myself.
- 5:07[SPEAKER_00]: I live by myself.
- 5:08[SPEAKER_00]: I work for myself.
- 5:10[SPEAKER_00]: I'm single.
- 5:10[SPEAKER_00]: A lot of my,
- 5:13[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, world is my inner world.
- 5:15[SPEAKER_00]: So here's someone that wants to hear everything about my life is deeply interested in everything I'm feeling and saying and so when I got drunk and him I just poured it out and I could tell like he he loved
- 5:29[SPEAKER_00]: hearing me share everything.
- 5:31[SPEAKER_00]: And my dad's a simple guy too.
- 5:32[SPEAKER_00]: Like he doesn't have, he just like goes to work and goes home to his wife and eats food.
- 5:38[SPEAKER_00]: So I think like getting able to connect with me and I'm a very like my vicious a life person.
- 5:44[SPEAKER_00]: It was a special moment for us to share between each other.
- 5:50[SPEAKER_01]: Let's go back to what you said.
- 5:52[SPEAKER_01]: I still couldn't get over it.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_01]: You're the president of the, what club again?
- 5:58[SPEAKER_00]: Students against destructive decisions, club.
- 6:02[SPEAKER_01]: You're not joking, like that's a real club.
- 6:04[SPEAKER_00]: That's a real club, yeah.
- 6:06[SPEAKER_00]: It's like the one, the club that makes the student car crash event, did you ever experience that?
- 6:14[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, it's like a mock car crash that they have like students acting
- 6:22[SPEAKER_00]: Good to be fair, the teacher that was head of that club was also the video production teachers.
- 6:31[SPEAKER_00]: I loved her, wanted to be around her more so yeah.
- 6:35[SPEAKER_01]: I'm always trying to get my kids to break the rules, because I was a huge rule breaker when I was a kid.
- 6:41[SPEAKER_01]: And my parents didn't really care.
- 6:42[SPEAKER_01]: They didn't really encourage it, but they didn't stop us.
- 6:45[SPEAKER_01]: They're just like, you know, they're just being them.
- 6:47[SPEAKER_01]: And then my kids are like, goody two shoes.
- 6:49[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm like, I don't understand why.
- 6:51[SPEAKER_01]: We were at a play last night at a theater and it was like, eight o'clock, we're trying to get home and the only way out was through the back up and then it's at staff only in the doors.
- 7:01[SPEAKER_01]: And I knew that the staff only go through those doors and we go down to the, you know, exit.
- 7:07[SPEAKER_01]: They go through.
- 7:08[SPEAKER_01]: They said, Dad, it's a staff only.
- 7:09[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, seven and a nine year old.
- 7:12[SPEAKER_01]: I wanted to like I told them look just trust me and then I went through and I took like 10 steps They would not fall.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_01]: They would not pass and go to the door They were just so like goody two shoes and I'm like guys.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_01]: I'm telling you you're with your dad like you should be able to understand like Go through this and we're gonna make it out and then once we went through a cutover and then we got to the exit.
- 7:33[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like Breaking rules is okay
- 7:37[SPEAKER_00]: Honestly, that's such a dead move of you to do though, to tell what you can't do this.
- 7:45[SPEAKER_00]: It makes me think about when I was at the airport like last week and there was like a group like a small Asian family like they didn't really say cut in front of me, but like it was like six of them cut in front of me and then the Asian daughter was behind me and they were like, come on, Stephanie, come on, come up here, come on, come on, come up here, it's not just come up here, not be dealing and she was like, no, no.
- 8:06[SPEAKER_00]: And then I turned around and I was like, go ahead, go and just go and she was like, don't worry about it.
- 8:10[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's like, I don't know, a different level of, maybe when you're younger, you want to be more.
- 8:21[SPEAKER_00]: consider it pleasant.
- 8:22[SPEAKER_00]: Nothing that you were, but like be a little more of a rule follower.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 8:27[SPEAKER_00]: Doctors are.
- 8:28[SPEAKER_01]: I have my nine years of daughter seven years of son when I was 13.
- 8:32[SPEAKER_01]: I was driving and 15.
- 8:34[SPEAKER_01]: I drove a cross country without a license without insurance.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_01]: He just did like I went with like two other.
- 8:40[SPEAKER_01]: like a 19 or 17 year old those guys didn't have a license.
- 8:44[SPEAKER_01]: They did they were young church guys and I was 15 I was like let me show you boys had a drive stick shift in the whole night because my dad let me drive a 12 13 He was putting us behind the wheel and there were no rules and I'm like I don't want my kids to like fall into this degenerate way of living like I do but
- 9:01[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, here's why I say all this because when I watch your content, I'm like, oh, here's somebody who has no rules.
- 9:08[SPEAKER_01]: Who just does.
- 9:10[SPEAKER_01]: There's no like, oh distribution.
- 9:13[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, who's financing all this stuff?
- 9:15[SPEAKER_01]: No, you're just like out doing
- 9:18[SPEAKER_01]: And that is what we need in the Vietnamese world, you know, content creation, directors or whatever.
- 9:25[SPEAKER_01]: But the other thing that's really important that you said though, too, is there's another film director named Victor Vu.
- 9:32[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm not gonna name names, but I'm gonna name him, because he and you are the kind of people who are like living in solitude and just cranking out
- 9:42[SPEAKER_01]: Just cranking out.
- 9:44[SPEAKER_01]: And he's done one movie a year for the last 18 years.
- 9:47[SPEAKER_01]: I think he's 19.
- 9:48[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 9:49[SPEAKER_01]: And he's a big director of Vietnam, but he didn't start out making good movies, you know, we all know that we all it's a fact.
- 9:56[SPEAKER_01]: And now he, you know, he's a big film director.
- 9:59[SPEAKER_01]: I went to Loyola Marymout here, but it's first two films were like, you know, and then you got to give it to him.
- 10:05[SPEAKER_01]: You never see him networking.
- 10:06[SPEAKER_01]: You never see him out party.
- 10:08[SPEAKER_01]: You never, you know, now he's just like sitting on the throne and just like, you know, watching the peasants in the film.
- 10:16[SPEAKER_01]: It's not struggling at all, it's focused, you know?
- 10:19[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's very incredible.
- 10:21[SPEAKER_00]: And I relate to just wanting to work on your craft in a way.
- 10:27[SPEAKER_00]: Like what really motivates me is,
- 10:31[SPEAKER_00]: Connecting with people and I mean, it's a very deep purpose for me and I know I only want to get better at it.
- 10:40[SPEAKER_00]: So I think what content does for me is just allows me to put in a lot of reps and like what you're saying Like you're not gonna be great at first, but then you always have a new you always have a new IG reel to Oh my god, like you trying to freestyle
- 10:58[SPEAKER_01]: Courage right the courage and Yeah, I mean, what can I say?
- 11:04[SPEAKER_01]: I mean that's like that's breaking the rules like one-on-one right there, you know, it's like
- 11:10[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's like an ability to laugh at yourself, like I think my page, it's a personal page, but I guess it's also become like a comedy page in a way.
- 11:23[SPEAKER_00]: So I was like, I don't care what people think about this, because it's meant to entertain people and make people laugh.
- 11:29[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, I think that's what made me feel so... Why do you?
- 11:35[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you, got that.
- 11:38[SPEAKER_01]: the ability to really not give off a lot of people think.
- 11:43[SPEAKER_01]: Right because most of us who are Korean content, like if I had just 10% of what that is that you have, I'd be killing it right now.
- 11:50[SPEAKER_01]: I'd be like, you know, be catching up to Milky Tran, you know?
- 11:54[SPEAKER_01]: Amazing.
- 11:56[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you so much.
- 11:56[SPEAKER_00]: I bet you can't do it because it honestly it's kind of the opposite for me of like what am what would I be afraid of really I guess like When I first had to like I attempted to make content like a few months before my first series and I was really trying to Be a filmmaker still yeah
- 12:24[SPEAKER_00]: and still like be a serious artist and what I had learned is social first is so important when you're on social media you know you have to make content not always like you can make beautiful art obviously and that's the goal too but like you have to play the game in a way and I think my confidence just as a person comes from my own taste I like that's why I always
- 12:54[SPEAKER_00]: when I was 14 and I loved Charlie Chaplin and I would watch two movies every day over the summer.
- 13:03[SPEAKER_00]: So I think I could develop a good taste when I was younger and when I was developing as an artist, I knew I was not quite there yet and then at a certain point I was like, I trust that I'm funny.
- 13:15[SPEAKER_00]: I trust that my skill set is strong in production or editing.
- 13:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, I think it's a, it's a comfort and who you are.
- 13:26[SPEAKER_00]: I also blocked my parents on Instagram so that they would not watch me because I want to talk about anything and I don't want to.
- 13:35[SPEAKER_01]: If you didn't inhibit, well, however they, you're done it's pretty young.
- 13:40[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, my dad is yeah, he's he's gonna love it.
- 13:43[SPEAKER_00]: You said that he's 55 and my mom is I think she's showing 53 this year So they're a little younger.
- 13:50[SPEAKER_01]: My homies are all their age.
- 13:52[SPEAKER_01]: No way all my homies.
- 13:54[SPEAKER_01]: They're all like 50s 60, you know, that's one of the sweet spot for my my Warren.
- 14:00[SPEAKER_00]: Oh wow, you're 50.
- 14:01[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'm 50
- 14:03[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, you're 50.
- 14:03[SPEAKER_00]: 50.
- 14:04[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it's okay, cool.
- 14:06[SPEAKER_01]: But I try to act like I'm 12, you know, like.
- 14:08[SPEAKER_01]: You're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're
- 14:26[SPEAKER_01]: You know, my brother, shout out to my brother for saying this thing about, um, you got to get the number.
- 14:34[SPEAKER_01]: I, you could you mention this, you got to get the numbers on, um, on socials first.
- 14:40[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's a new day and age, right?
- 14:41[SPEAKER_01]: We, you got to find a way to get the, you got to raise the numbers.
- 14:45[SPEAKER_01]: And I think,
- 14:47[SPEAKER_01]: the journey of raising the numbers is a journey of not just about raising the numbers, which is I think one of the most important things, but more important than that is to understand what tracks for numbers to raise.
- 15:02[SPEAKER_01]: You know,
- 15:02[SPEAKER_01]: when you start making content and you go in all directions and you start to realize what what works and what doesn't.
- 15:07[SPEAKER_01]: You begin to know more about who you are as a content creator and then you begin to understand yourself more and then you begin to understand art in a way that is sublime, I think.
- 15:21[SPEAKER_00]: Wow that's really interesting.
- 15:24[SPEAKER_00]: I feel similarly where
- 15:28[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like a lot of creative people that are new to social media.
- 15:33[SPEAKER_00]: They're often doing things that they personally want to do, which is great.
- 15:38[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's really important as an artist, but I think they tend to ignore the idea of an audience.
- 15:44[SPEAKER_00]: Like, who are you creating this sport?
- 15:46[SPEAKER_00]: Who wants to see this?
- 15:48[SPEAKER_00]: Who is this valuable to?
- 15:51[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that mindset shift for me was very powerful.
- 15:56[SPEAKER_00]: And yeah, it's not like necessarily catering to an audience.
- 15:59[SPEAKER_00]: It's just a different type of awareness and You have to watch a lot of like take talk and Instagram too to understand like the rhythm of like one Work for a what catches my attention scrolling yeah
- 16:12[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, because if you think about we are artists, right?
- 16:16[SPEAKER_01]: And there's two things that we have to be very mindful of.
- 16:18[SPEAKER_01]: What is, what are we obsessed with and how are we able to sell and monetize our obsession?
- 16:26[SPEAKER_01]: That's really, I think the key to all of this.
- 16:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 16:30[SPEAKER_01]: I want to just sing and I'm obsessed with singing.
- 16:34[SPEAKER_01]: I got to think who's buying this Asian man's face.
- 16:37[SPEAKER_00]: If you sing right?
- 16:40[SPEAKER_01]: It is a beautiful, like, song and voice coming out of my mouth, then who is buying that?
- 16:46[SPEAKER_01]: Because at the end of the day, my face is attached to it, and it was not really like, uh, uh, uh, like, something that somebody can can enjoy, then I really have to, like, really think about what I'm presenting.
- 17:00[SPEAKER_01]: Because I can be obsessed with like sounds coming out of my vocal cords and how I'm like expressing, you know, to the writing and singing.
- 17:08[SPEAKER_01]: But if the people on the other side are not really buying it,
- 17:11[SPEAKER_01]: You mean got a business?
- 17:14[SPEAKER_00]: I know.
- 17:14[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 17:15[SPEAKER_00]: I'm really tough, especially like living in LA.
- 17:19[SPEAKER_00]: I'm around, you know, I'm 28 years old now.
- 17:23[SPEAKER_00]: And it's around the age where people, like, my peers are leaving LA.
- 17:28[SPEAKER_00]: Because they're like learning that maybe,
- 17:34[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe their dreams are not aligning with where they are right now or it's a very, it's the most competitive industry in the world.
- 17:44[SPEAKER_00]: So I would never like, like, blame them or say that they're not talented, but commercial appeal on this.
- 17:51[SPEAKER_00]: It's a big thing.
- 17:52[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's a real thing.
- 17:53[SPEAKER_01]: It's a real thing.
- 17:54[SPEAKER_01]: And you've got to know it, too.
- 17:55[SPEAKER_01]: You've got to know what, what are you commercially appealing?
- 17:58[SPEAKER_01]: Are you not only physically are you commercially, but
- 18:01[SPEAKER_01]: What's coming out of your spirit and soul?
- 18:03[SPEAKER_01]: Have you been at it long enough to know if it's commercially appealing?
- 18:07[SPEAKER_01]: What, you know, it's such a tough, it's an LA conversation.
- 18:12[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, like I personally for me, at least within the past year, I've been focusing more on how I look, which is interesting because I'm a writer director, you know.
- 18:22[SPEAKER_00]: So I was one of those more people.
- 18:24[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just like, my whole editing for like 12 hours.
- 18:27[SPEAKER_00]: I don't care how I look, but now because I'm like presenting more on camera, it's like, oh, I have to look nice.
- 18:34[SPEAKER_00]: And I have to get my hair done.
- 18:36[SPEAKER_00]: I have to take care of myself in ways that I did not anticipate
- 18:42[SPEAKER_00]: It's, I think it's all a journey and a journey.
- 18:45[SPEAKER_01]: I think you go back to Pittsburgh and people are like, you're so LA, you know, because I've had that mind, I'm like, what does that mean?
- 18:51[SPEAKER_01]: What does, you're so LA mean?
- 18:53[SPEAKER_01]: I've no, I never knew what that means, but it is true that because you're out here, you have to take care of yourself in a way that is very different.
- 19:01[SPEAKER_01]: You're going to gym every day.
- 19:03[SPEAKER_01]: And even even the fact that I'm in the gym every day, I still feel like I'm not up to snuff with the standards and I'm watching
- 19:10[SPEAKER_01]: on the street of LA.
- 19:12[SPEAKER_01]: It's a sync proposition.
- 19:14[SPEAKER_00]: Wow, you're like comparing yourself.
- 19:17[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, my god.
- 19:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 19:18[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I grew up here.
- 19:22[SPEAKER_00]: Really?
- 19:22[SPEAKER_01]: It is a song.
- 19:23[SPEAKER_01]: But it's, you know, if you can sort of incorporate it into a healthy approach, then you're going to be okay.
- 19:29[SPEAKER_01]: Because I think a little pressure ain't never killed nobody, right?
- 19:34[SPEAKER_01]: It's fine.
- 19:35[SPEAKER_01]: I think you need that.
- 19:36[SPEAKER_01]: You need to, and then you go to like, um,
- 19:39[SPEAKER_01]: then you go to other cities in the world and people are like, wow, you take care of yourself, they can feel it, they can feel the way you dress, the way you carry yourself, the body, all of it is tight and that can be all the way to surely McClain 92 years old.
- 19:56[SPEAKER_01]: She's still functioning
- 20:02[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, I totally agree.
- 20:04[SPEAKER_00]: It's it's interesting.
- 20:05[SPEAKER_00]: But at least we look younger than that.
- 20:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, exactly.
- 20:08[SPEAKER_00]: And in springa, compared to everyone.
- 20:10[SPEAKER_01]: Totally.
- 20:11[SPEAKER_01]: No, we do, we do.
- 20:12[SPEAKER_01]: Sure.
- 20:13[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I do have a, um, this thing, vid maxing that I saw.
- 20:17[SPEAKER_01]: I want to use clips.
- 20:18[SPEAKER_01]: Um, okay.
- 20:20[SPEAKER_01]: If we were to think about that, right?
- 20:22[SPEAKER_01]: Like, what?
- 20:23[SPEAKER_01]: is because I used to ask everybody what does it mean to be Vietnamese, but now I've got the better question as tell me about your idea of Vietnamcing.
- 20:31[SPEAKER_01]: How do you define it?
- 20:33[SPEAKER_00]: Oh my gosh, being maxing, starting off the day with a shot of Hennessy, and then we're going to, I don't know where we're going to have some cool and fun stuff.
- 20:48[SPEAKER_00]: Just like a bunch of delicious party food, and then we're going to carry a key until 2 a.m. And then someone's going to cry, probably my mom.
- 21:00[SPEAKER_00]: And I mean, a lot of my experience, it's collected through small moments for me because I grew up in a very white area in Pittsburgh.
- 21:10[SPEAKER_00]: So I wasn't, I didn't grow up around Vietnamese people.
- 21:13[SPEAKER_00]: It's really just my, my family.
- 21:16[SPEAKER_00]: And so that's why a lot of my memories of Vietnamese is at like these big beards.
- 21:22[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 21:30[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, you worked at a company a YouTube company called Jubilee.
- 21:38[SPEAKER_01]: When you first came out here, I'm curious to know what did you learn during those that during that time that really technically gave you the tool kit to really do what you do today.
- 21:52[SPEAKER_01]: It must
- 21:56[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, that was such a special time of my life.
- 21:59[SPEAKER_00]: It was my first job when I moved to LA.
- 22:03[SPEAKER_00]: And it was my first kind of full-time creative job as a director.
- 22:12[SPEAKER_00]: because I had graduated film school and then a year later I was working at this company as a director and I just did not expect that level of responsibility and so it was like okay they trust me I have to step up I have to really like
- 22:29[SPEAKER_00]: put my all into this, but it was a learning curve because I, at that point, you know, I had only been in film school and directing narrative shorts, and this was an unscripted world.
- 22:40[SPEAKER_00]: It was a YouTube algorithm world, and I think I really, I will one, I think they,
- 22:48[SPEAKER_00]: That their employees really well, so the community was really excellent.
- 22:53[SPEAKER_00]: They really strive for empathy and connection, which aligns with my values as a creator as well.
- 23:01[SPEAKER_00]: And so the process of working there was it felt a little like a playground in a way.
- 23:09[SPEAKER_00]: Like we did a lot of social videos, you know, so it was.
- 23:13[SPEAKER_00]: I always talking about politics or the zeitgeist or the social world, so there was a lot to explore.
- 23:20[SPEAKER_00]: And they taught me, kind of what I was saying earlier about thinking about your audience, that's what really registered with me is like, okay, we're trying to make viral videos.
- 23:32[SPEAKER_00]: We're trying to see what is popular in the zeitgeist right now that people are curious about that.
- 23:39[SPEAKER_00]: And whenever we would,
- 23:41[SPEAKER_00]: Um, pitch ideas.
- 23:42[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, okay, let's start with the thumbnail.
- 23:44[SPEAKER_00]: Let's mock up with them now.
- 23:45[SPEAKER_00]: This is applicable.
- 23:46[SPEAKER_00]: Is this is this the title?
- 23:48[SPEAKER_00]: Is that interesting enough?
- 23:50[SPEAKER_00]: It made me like, really think more deeply about the whole strategy.
- 23:55[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, exactly.
- 23:57[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 23:57[SPEAKER_00]: And then just the ability to constantly turn out ideas and to execute them and
- 24:04[SPEAKER_00]: and kind of, the thing with being a director is no one really tells you how to do it.
- 24:10[SPEAKER_00]: Even in film school, no one's telling you to like, okay, now check in with the actors and make everyone comfortable and then the, like, no one tells you how to do that.
- 24:19[SPEAKER_00]: You just have to find your own system.
- 24:21[SPEAKER_00]: So it was a great opportunity for me to
- 24:24[SPEAKER_00]: step into a leadership role and allow myself to be like, I know I'm this like small 23-year-old woman that doesn't that, like I only want to film school but I have authority here.
- 24:38[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to run this set professionally and I'm in charge.
- 24:42[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 24:43[UNKNOWN]: Yeah.
- 24:46[SPEAKER_01]: You know that is some girl boss, you know,
- 24:52[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if that's a good word or not, girl boss, but, you know what, we've moved a little beyond girl boss, but, um, I appreciate it.
- 25:00[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, what, what have we moved on to now, we don't use girl boss anymore?
- 25:04[SPEAKER_00]: I, I, I, I, I'm not sure what it's because any boss, I'm just a boss.
- 25:11[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, maybe just a boss.
- 25:12[SPEAKER_01]: Just a boss.
- 25:13[SPEAKER_00]: I like girl boss though, honestly.
- 25:14[SPEAKER_00]: Like I love being able to be extremely feminine.
- 25:18[SPEAKER_00]: It's still in like a leadership position.
- 25:21[SPEAKER_00]: And it's like not having my feminineity take away from the respect that people give me in my work.
- 25:29[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 25:30[SPEAKER_01]: And it shows that era that aura shows on the channel,
- 25:42[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that when we think of Jubilee and the experience that you had there, it looks like you take the understanding of what moves online, but you also experiment a lot more than if you were wearing a corporate hat at Jubilee or not, Jubilee, I don't know.
- 26:06[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not sure I would consider it corporate, but it has a lot more risk of factors involved when you make a decision for the direction of a piece of content.
- 26:16[SPEAKER_01]: But for you, you don't really have to worry about that as much.
- 26:21[SPEAKER_01]: So you're kind of in this beautiful world of like, you can take the risk.
- 26:25[SPEAKER_01]: And you take a lot of risk, I see it.
- 26:28[SPEAKER_01]: But then you also have the kind of structural understanding of what moves.
- 26:33[SPEAKER_00]: Mmm.
- 26:34[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you.
- 26:34[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you.
- 26:35[SPEAKER_00]: I think that is the great part of working for yourself is I only really have myself to disappointment and I, you know, being your own boss, it is a struggle.
- 26:47[SPEAKER_00]: I still have expectations for myself.
- 26:49[SPEAKER_00]: I still have to
- 26:51[SPEAKER_00]: like it was a learning curve how to be a good boss to myself and to treat myself kindly and because I whenever I was first creating I luckily had like a viral series and it was like a million views every single week but then I burned out and I just could not like continue that level and then my videos because I was shifting my content and I took a break that algorithm wasn't
- 27:20[SPEAKER_01]: I'm vlogging, and it was so difficult.
- 27:24[SPEAKER_00]: But I think when you flop, that allows you to give space to explore something new and try again, and it made me think, like, okay, if I did this, like, how many, like, 20 times already, I can do this again, and it's not, it's not on you, it's in you.
- 27:43[SPEAKER_01]: Have you feel like you've recovered from that slump or that flop?
- 27:50[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think like, it's not fair to have your expectations be through the root, because again, I was reaching like a million people every week, so I was like, that's the bar.
- 28:03[SPEAKER_00]: I have to continue that bar, and that's just the crazy expectation.
- 28:07[SPEAKER_00]: And I shifted my gears, because I was making the series called three adult things, which is like a community series.
- 28:14[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, thank you.
- 28:15[SPEAKER_00]: I was just filming what this earlier today.
- 28:16[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, I kind of want to do it again.
- 28:18[SPEAKER_00]: But I was doing that for a while and you know, I'm a filmmaker.
- 28:22[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not a performer.
- 28:23[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not a comedian.
- 28:25[SPEAKER_00]: And I was like, what am I clown now on the internet?
- 28:28[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I want to be taken seriously.
- 28:30[SPEAKER_00]: So I talked to my manager and he gave me the advice to make a like higher production series.
- 28:39[SPEAKER_00]: You said a lot of these creators, a lot of these individuals are getting
- 28:42[SPEAKER_00]: multi-million dollar deals with these studios.
- 28:47[SPEAKER_00]: So that's when I shifted my gear to my series next session and that has been such a joy for me because I am you know flexing more of my writing directing skills.
- 28:58[SPEAKER_00]: It's leading me more to the traditional entertainment path which is where I want to
- 29:07[SPEAKER_00]: solo journey, I shoot at myself, I perform with myself, I edit myself, but this time I had a team, I had like a crew and that's just makes things so much more fun and it made me feel like, okay, there are people that want to see this succeed too.
- 29:22[SPEAKER_00]: It didn't feel like pressure, it felt like support.
- 29:27[SPEAKER_01]: You sing, you direct, you act, I'm going to keep mentioning this
- 29:37[SPEAKER_00]: Oh wow!
- 29:40[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, why do you think about it?
- 29:41[SPEAKER_01]: Let me just remind the audience, you sing, you write, you direct, you produce, you act, you pull dance, you do so many facets that, you know, a lot of people just do one, and you are good, you're good at all because the traffic is moving, what do you enjoy most?
- 30:04[SPEAKER_01]: And you know what, to make the question not too tough, what about like the first,
- 30:08[SPEAKER_01]: one or two things out, really, that you enjoy.
- 30:10[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
- 30:12[SPEAKER_00]: That's such a thoughtful question.
- 30:14[SPEAKER_00]: And thank you for seeing me in that way.
- 30:16[SPEAKER_00]: I think what comes the most natural to me is writing.
- 30:22[SPEAKER_00]: I really, like, that's just a part of...
- 30:26[SPEAKER_00]: how I processed things I've been like journaling since I was 13 and I feel like writing is like pooping like if I'm not even that I'm constipated.
- 30:35[SPEAKER_00]: I'm weird honestly for the day or the week and it just comes very instinctual to me and I think like
- 30:46[SPEAKER_00]: for a while being a multi-hifin it was difficult for me like as a writer like I was in a screenwriting major I was a production major in focusing directing but as a screenwriter I was like okay am I going to try to get into writer's rooms it seems like too exclusive I don't think I like want it and I don't think I have like TV writing like that
- 31:08[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't think I'm good enough for that.
- 31:09[SPEAKER_00]: And then with directing, I didn't come from a photography background that a lot of people come from or a videography background.
- 31:16[SPEAKER_00]: I, like, much rather work with a DP than like shoot itself.
- 31:20[SPEAKER_00]: So I was like, ah, with it, like, in the directing world, it's like, you know, working commercial or music videos when you're younger.
- 31:26[SPEAKER_00]: And it's like, I don't think I have as much of like that visual edge.
- 31:32[SPEAKER_00]: And,
- 31:33[SPEAKER_00]: When it came to like, uh, like editing, I was like, I don't love this process enough and producing.
- 31:40[SPEAKER_00]: I don't really like producing at all.
- 31:43[SPEAKER_00]: You just have to do it.
- 31:44[SPEAKER_00]: Um, and do it.
- 31:45[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you, it's a job.
- 31:47[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, totally.
- 31:48[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you for producing this.
- 31:50[SPEAKER_00]: Um, but yeah, and then with music, it was like the same thing like I loved it and I I'm singing and music that was my first love.
- 31:58[SPEAKER_00]: I wanted to be a musician.
- 32:00[SPEAKER_00]: So I was like five and then I shifted gears when I was 17.
- 32:04[SPEAKER_00]: So it's always been like a deep part of my background, but so competitive, so difficult.
- 32:09[SPEAKER_00]: And I just again didn't feel like I was good enough.
- 32:12[SPEAKER_00]: But then with social media,
- 32:16[SPEAKER_00]: Now all those things combine together to make it great, you know, like my writing is supported by my directing that's supported by my editing that's supported by my music so I'm so grateful that it came together.
- 32:32[SPEAKER_01]: You know, you came into the business at the cusp of, I mean, yeah, maybe I can use the cusp of the traditional model leaving the distribution, the big studios, losing all the leverage to YouTube and Netflix and streaming platforms.
- 32:52[SPEAKER_01]: Wait, where do you find yourself sort of,
- 32:56[SPEAKER_01]: wanting to go because you did mention it sounds like you know exactly what these writer rooms and you know the whole process is making a feature you understand it I'm sure going to film school and production and where do you find yourself in this new landscape?
- 33:12[SPEAKER_00]: Mmm, that's I think that's something I'm still discovering in a way like I have really love the independent process of creation and being like an indie filmmaker essentially.
- 33:27[SPEAKER_00]: But again, like what when I made my my series next session, it was in hopes of like a proof of concept to be a showrunner one day people can see like wow.
- 33:37[SPEAKER_00]: great writer she knows how to direct and tell a story and she can perform and then but my ultimate goal when I moved to LA was to make a feature film and that's still like in my cards and in my dreams because it's
- 33:52[SPEAKER_00]: There's a different feeling of legacy in a way, not that I care, like not my legacy, but more so like having a piece of art that really stays with someone, you know, and people can look at that and be like, wow, that's my favorite movie, and it changed me.
- 34:10[SPEAKER_00]: content can change you for sure but I think there's more staying power when it comes to features but also like I'm finding myself really loving performing and acting and noticing that my personality is a huge part of my brand so I'm also open to that like maybe I'll be a TV guest star on something or like you know it's a funny character or do more commercials or
- 34:36[SPEAKER_00]: I don't really know what's in the cards for me.
- 34:38[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just like, pretty near my head, like, just going.
- 34:41[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just gonna keep going.
- 34:44[SPEAKER_01]: So if there's two schools of thoughts, one school is vision board.
- 34:48[SPEAKER_01]: I gotta see where I go.
- 34:49[SPEAKER_01]: I'm gonna put it up and visualize and see exactly where I'm going or spray and pray.
- 34:55[SPEAKER_01]: Dare to you find yourself more.
- 34:59[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I'm more of a visualizer for sure.
- 35:01[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I have all those things that I've mentioned.
- 35:05[SPEAKER_00]: They don't feel random to me.
- 35:07[SPEAKER_00]: It doesn't feel like a prayer to me.
- 35:10[SPEAKER_00]: It's more of like, when it went, like, I feel like that's a little crazy.
- 35:16[SPEAKER_00]: Like, that's not true.
- 35:18[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you.
- 35:18[SPEAKER_00]: I have this level of confidence.
- 35:20[SPEAKER_00]: Like, the audience that I've built really supports me
- 35:28[SPEAKER_00]: The amount of support has been incredible.
- 35:30[SPEAKER_00]: And I know my work touches people.
- 35:33[SPEAKER_00]: I know people really want to see more from me.
- 35:37[SPEAKER_00]: And I've only been concentrating for a year and a half.
- 35:41[SPEAKER_00]: Now, it's only going to get bigger.
- 35:43[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm sure.
- 35:45[SPEAKER_00]: I'm only going to get stronger and better at what I do and a lot of my work is self-biographical in a way so I'm excited to just grow older and figure out what lessons I'm learning and translate that to people of my generation and grow with that, yeah.
- 36:05[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I'm going to describe what I think is sort of how I feel about your content.
- 36:12[SPEAKER_01]: It's a tasteful nastiness.
- 36:19[SPEAKER_01]: You know?
- 36:20[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 36:20[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 36:21[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 36:21[SPEAKER_01]: It tastes full noddiness.
- 36:24[SPEAKER_01]: Tastes full nastiness.
- 36:25[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you.
- 36:26[SPEAKER_01]: You know, it reminds me of the early opital films.
- 36:29[SPEAKER_01]: It reminds me of like super bad for the old virgin pineapple express that whole like time.
- 36:36[SPEAKER_01]: But done in a more elevated, more feminine, soft touch with a lot of gay gay men and
- 36:46[SPEAKER_01]: But he's still like really kind of answering to like the modern heterosexual sort of world as well.
- 36:54[SPEAKER_01]: That's incorporating like the one you do with the three some with the one Asian guy in the game it is like Awesome.
- 37:02[SPEAKER_01]: I don't want to see your you know, I don't want to see yours and you know like Yeah, it's uh, what do you think you get that from?
- 37:13[SPEAKER_00]: I think I've always been an extremely silly person and as a kid, you know, like procious kids, they want to speak like adult and stuff.
- 37:26[SPEAKER_00]: So I was consuming a lot of things I probably should have when I was younger.
- 37:31[SPEAKER_00]: And I think...
- 37:33[SPEAKER_00]: having my best friend.
- 37:35[SPEAKER_00]: He was in that through some video the game man and I think he opened me up to like audacity and just allowed filth to like the filth in my mind to come out of my mouth
- 37:50[SPEAKER_00]: Honestly, the way I'm perceived because I come off pretty like soft and youthful and to like I allows me to, you know, calm me is kind of about the unexpected and allowing myself to stay some ridiculous stuff I think is unexpected in some ways and I think I appreciate you calling it tasteful because something that I really
- 38:14[SPEAKER_00]: I think my tone or style as a filmmaker is I always want to use some restraint, you know, I don't want to do too much and I think yeah, it's it's about the level of taste because you could definitely be crass and that not be funny.
- 38:30[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think in comedy, if you don't have constraints,
- 38:35[SPEAKER_01]: It ain't going to be funny because it's just like an all-out like, you know, like nasty fest is not, you know what I mean?
- 38:47[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, when you stick to the strings, I thought you said, Kant's strings.
- 38:50[SPEAKER_00]: And I was like, yeah, because I thought you were, we're all just like, Kant, no, I don't know if you know that.
- 38:56[SPEAKER_00]: We're like a man.
- 38:56[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think you think that.
- 38:58[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think you guys can say, but women can say it.
- 39:01[SPEAKER_00]: We're saying it all the time, yeah.
- 39:03[SPEAKER_01]: Again, men can say it any time to their friends, but I don't think it should create dude, my generation.
- 39:10[SPEAKER_01]: It's differently.
- 39:12[SPEAKER_00]: Well, it's not like, I wouldn't say it called someone a Kant, but followed them, Kantee.
- 39:18[SPEAKER_01]: That was good.
- 39:19[SPEAKER_00]: That was your wife.
- 39:21[SPEAKER_01]: That does the blade a little bit.
- 39:23[SPEAKER_01]: That does the edge.
- 39:24[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it does many Kantee that that.
- 39:26[SPEAKER_00]: That was cool.
- 39:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
- 39:28[SPEAKER_00]: And you know what it means?
- 39:29[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 39:29[SPEAKER_01]: Kantee means, uh, sassy.
- 39:32[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 39:33[SPEAKER_01]: No, a little bit.
- 39:34[SPEAKER_01]: No.
- 39:35[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 39:36[SPEAKER_00]: No, that's pretty.
- 39:37[SPEAKER_00]: It's Kantee is kind of like.
- 39:38[SPEAKER_01]: It's a cousin of sassy.
- 39:40[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, it girl, like, cool, you're sexy, you're a baddie, you're like, that's like a little edgy.
- 39:49[SPEAKER_00]: It's kind of like that.
- 39:51[SPEAKER_00]: But always been a tasteful, like, cool way.
- 39:53[SPEAKER_01]: Oh my god, that's all like a landmine if I start bustling it out.
- 39:57[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, big, big, big, big.
- 39:59[SPEAKER_01]: I got to be careful with it.
- 40:01[SPEAKER_01]: Have you been to Vietnam?
- 40:03[SPEAKER_00]: I happened to Vietnam, yeah.
- 40:06[SPEAKER_01]: And I know this, but I want to,
- 40:09[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously, it's a way to ask a question and you don't lead into the next, uh, it's a signal that we're going with this next, um, when did you go last?
- 40:19[SPEAKER_00]: I went, um, I think two years ago.
- 40:22[SPEAKER_01]: So it's already new.
- 40:23[SPEAKER_01]: It's like brand new.
- 40:24[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's in the modern side of it.
- 40:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I would say so, but to be fair, I was traveling with my family.
- 40:30[SPEAKER_00]: So I was seeing, like, a lot of my family in the countryside and it, it, things like that.
- 40:37[SPEAKER_00]: So I didn't
- 40:38[SPEAKER_00]: No, no, I've been maybe like four other times directly throughout my life, but it always had been kind of like a trip with my family and I'm nervous about this section because I am geographically very, I'm very poor at you.
- 40:57[SPEAKER_01]: You challenged, you did it with John.
- 40:59[SPEAKER_00]: That's the weakest part of my brain, actually.
- 41:01[SPEAKER_00]: Like if I got kidnapped,
- 41:03[SPEAKER_00]: I'm dead.
- 41:03[SPEAKER_01]: You're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're,
- 41:25[SPEAKER_01]: Isn't you as you're making content as you're thinking about the future of what we all do here as the Americans.
- 41:34[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I think.
- 41:37[SPEAKER_00]: Since I was younger, what it meant to me was in an alternative life.
- 41:43[SPEAKER_00]: Like I still have family there.
- 41:44[SPEAKER_00]: I have a cousin that's my age there that actually looks kind of similar to me there.
- 41:49[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, that's like, yeah, and my dad was the only one out of his family that was able to immigrate to the States.
- 41:56[SPEAKER_00]: And so I get to live this much more privileged lifestyle.
- 42:00[SPEAKER_00]: I pursue creativity.
- 42:02[SPEAKER_00]: I get to be a film.
- 42:03[SPEAKER_00]: I get to be an influencer, you know?
- 42:06[SPEAKER_00]: You remember, and she just did not get the same opportunities as I, so I think I always carry a part of that with me.
- 42:16[SPEAKER_00]: And like I said, I grew up in a very white area where my
- 42:23[SPEAKER_00]: My culture was something that I was more nervous to share and participate in because I wanted to be American and fit in with people, but now I'm recognizing like
- 42:39[SPEAKER_00]: my culture and the beautiful hearts of the unseen and visible parts of our culture, like resilience and the focus on family and connection, like that's not as prevalent within American communities all the time, you know?
- 42:58[SPEAKER_00]: And I think like that's why oftentimes I write about family and I feel
- 43:09[SPEAKER_00]: love runs in my life.
- 43:12[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that's it can be a more universal thing, but I think like Vietnamese people would we love our family.
- 43:20[SPEAKER_01]: We do.
- 43:21[SPEAKER_01]: We do.
- 43:22[SPEAKER_01]: It sounds like you eventually want to have a family, right?
- 43:25[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I would say so.
- 43:26[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 43:27[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 43:28[SPEAKER_01]: So this is something that I'm challenged with.
- 43:36[SPEAKER_01]: flagged with this problem.
- 43:38[SPEAKER_01]: There's like a two-pronged three-pronged problem.
- 43:42[SPEAKER_01]: We're always working.
- 43:43[SPEAKER_01]: We're always thinking about what's next.
- 43:44[SPEAKER_01]: We're always thinking about our goals in the and entertainment industry.
- 43:47[SPEAKER_01]: And it's like a never-ending, because we live a great, how my God, we do live a good life.
- 43:53[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not gonna lie.
- 43:54[SPEAKER_01]: We live an amazing life in a beautiful city, beautiful weather.
- 43:59[SPEAKER_01]: with a lot of beautiful people options right but I think like people like you and me well we work really want family
- 44:09[SPEAKER_01]: that it's like we want family but yet we still want to build and you're going to see even when you're 50 like me you're still going to want to keep putting out more material and more you know you're just creators we have like this infinite power of creation we think a lot about new things.
- 44:30[SPEAKER_01]: How do you straddle and balance all of this sort of like the desire to like put out so much product at the same time?
- 44:38[SPEAKER_01]: How do you make space for like somebody in your life?
- 44:41[SPEAKER_01]: I'm curious to hear what like a 28 year old living in LA thinks about this.
- 44:47[SPEAKER_00]: Um, you should have said it with my, like, my therapy session yesterday.
- 44:51[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like that's like what we're talking.
- 44:53[SPEAKER_00]: It's, it's extremely difficult.
- 44:55[SPEAKER_00]: I would say to, to find balance in my life, um, because I think.
- 45:01[SPEAKER_00]: Ambition has always been, it was my birthday last week and what I did, thank you so much, I look through a bunch of my old journals and my old things from high school and what was really prevalent was my addition and my drive and my, my
- 45:20[SPEAKER_00]: How much I was like striving for success in a way?
- 45:24[SPEAKER_00]: It was a little startling, you know, to be like that success or it's goal oriented that was like that's always been me but I've always also been extremely like romantic person The truth is like in the content yeah, I hope I hope it's not so you're like
- 45:43[SPEAKER_00]: Tell me about you really feel like I don't want to come off to like, you know, either I learned this word the other day saccharin, do you know saccharin and a sugar fake sugar?
- 45:55[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, yes, I never want to come off that way, which is what, how does that even a cake can you explain?
- 46:02[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, like I think there's just, um, when it's at level of restraint, right?
- 46:08[SPEAKER_00]: If you do too much of like this softness, this melodrama, this yearning, I think it's a secret.
- 46:15[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 46:16[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's it.
- 46:16[SPEAKER_00]: At least to me, it's just a little too.
- 46:19[SPEAKER_00]: Little too sweet that it's not digestible.
- 46:22[SPEAKER_01]: Got it.
- 46:22[SPEAKER_01]: It's okay, drama is secret.
- 46:26[SPEAKER_00]: I haven't finished the cage.
- 46:28[SPEAKER_00]: I've like watched pilots up, but it is a little, yeah, I never want to be, and that's thank you, Joe.
- 46:34[SPEAKER_00]: I'm sorry, this fight.
- 46:34[SPEAKER_00]: Never want to be corny or cheesy or like, okay, okay, so saccharin is corny and cheesy.
- 46:39[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so at least in my case, yeah, okay, but um, I was reading my my old journals and that was really driven and I'm trying to remember my two to fly.
- 46:49[SPEAKER_00]: I was wrong.
- 46:50[SPEAKER_01]: Man, the balance between like really driven, really driven, but wanting romantic connection, but like figuring all of that out in this city.
- 46:58[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think for me, I'm just the advice that my therapist gave me yesterday is to treat my relationships like it's a job.
- 47:09[SPEAKER_00]: In the way that I am like so driven and I, you know, have built my career, how I want it to.
- 47:17[SPEAKER_00]: I know I can do the same thing with my relationships and it's just
- 47:22[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it takes time.
- 47:25[SPEAKER_00]: Be careful where you spend your time because that's where you end up.
- 47:30[SPEAKER_00]: So for the past few or three years, I haven't been focusing so much on my romantic relationships, but I also know as a writer, not saying that this is why I'm doing it, but as a writer, I know I need life experiences to share.
- 47:47[SPEAKER_00]: And I want them to be shared to have my own life and
- 47:52[SPEAKER_00]: it's it's hard, especially being a little bit more in the public.
- 47:57[SPEAKER_00]: I do, I'm not saying like people are like, how many me down or anything, but it's just a little...
- 48:04[SPEAKER_00]: Like it's a little different just like being on hinge and I've been on so many bad day I've been so many I can't do it anymore.
- 48:12[SPEAKER_00]: It's it's like to just meet out every time So yeah, I'm just gonna keep doing me and I'm hoping that that it's the right people and maybe puts me in the right Areas or opportunities where I can meet people there.
- 48:27[SPEAKER_00]: So what's the name?
- 48:28[SPEAKER_01]: I've been
- 48:30[SPEAKER_01]: I've interviewed Ola Pola from Instagram.
- 48:34[SPEAKER_01]: She's a Vietnamese Polish person.
- 48:39[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and she gives just wonderful kind of viewpoints on dating and commercial success in your life and business world and HR issues.
- 48:50[SPEAKER_01]: She's very corporate, but at the same time, like we talked about dating a lot.
- 48:55[SPEAKER_01]: And
- 48:56[SPEAKER_01]: You just said something that triggered my thought of what her exercise was to find the her husband She told me She came out with a hundred and forty five points on a spreadsheet and then she would like check off against all of it And then she went on forty six dates
- 49:15[SPEAKER_01]: and she went about it like you said like a job like this is a job she's interviewing she's like you know getting to know people and went out in 43 dates the 43rd one was the guy and she knew it and then she went out on three more just to make sure so she had 46
- 49:36[SPEAKER_01]: and it worked.
- 49:38[SPEAKER_00]: Wow.
- 49:39[SPEAKER_01]: So you have to like, I think really go, you know what, the shithain as nebulous as we think it is.
- 49:46[SPEAKER_01]: There's got to be some like empirical data, driven process, like what all I did,
- 49:53[SPEAKER_01]: And you should probably hit up on Instagram where I can make an introduction, but I'm very impressed by the singular thinking that she she made a process out of looking for a partner and I think that when you do that when you finally arrive at the person you're looking for you've already thought about all this at this point, right?
- 50:15[SPEAKER_01]: You've already really thought about like what you can live with what you can't live without non-negotiables all of that and then you go about looking for it And then when you finally find number 43 You know that you've exhausted all of the stuff and you've already thought about it and you go I'm never gonna find another guy like number 43 and you can Finally rest at peace knowing that You found the homey that you know
- 50:44[SPEAKER_00]: I can't share with some thoughts.
- 50:45[SPEAKER_00]: I don't want to hate, of course.
- 50:49[SPEAKER_00]: Just that level of commitment, there is me, not not committing to someone, but like going out.
- 50:56[SPEAKER_01]: Go into that process.
- 50:57[SPEAKER_00]: To that process, that sounds like exhaustive emotionally, and just with my time, like I feel so,
- 51:09[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I get creatively burned out pretty quickly.
- 51:12[SPEAKER_00]: And that's why I'm like, I isolate myself.
- 51:14[SPEAKER_00]: I stay in often times.
- 51:16[SPEAKER_00]: And sometimes I wonder if I've built a life that someone wants to join, because I am wrestling so often.
- 51:23[SPEAKER_00]: So it like gives so many people that many chances.
- 51:29[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like women and men, I would love your opinion on this women and men may be different in the way that they choose to commit, where women are really looking for a perfect person.
- 51:41[SPEAKER_00]: And I had heard, I don't know what you think about this taxicab theory that people talk about of when men are men don't necessarily choose the woman that is their dream girl and they're
- 51:57[SPEAKER_00]: You know, like they like enough and is accessible when they're ready to like settle down and I've heard it both ways though.
- 52:03[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, I'll apply to both men and women.
- 52:06[SPEAKER_01]: So I've heard it apply to both men and women.
- 52:09[SPEAKER_01]: I think there's a lot of women that look at a relationship that way.
- 52:15[SPEAKER_00]: I think yeah, go ahead.
- 52:16[SPEAKER_01]: Go ahead.
- 52:17[SPEAKER_01]: Good.
- 52:18[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, I'm such a romantic that I am looking for that perfect person and maybe or maybe I need a few more reps and knowing exactly what I want because I think I've been pretty open minded and trying out different types of people and see how that fits within my lifestyle.
- 52:38[SPEAKER_00]: But I'm also, you know, I'm 28 right now.
- 52:40[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, do I have to move fast to like all the good men don't get married?
- 52:45[SPEAKER_00]: And so that I, you know, it's like reality.
- 52:48[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, that's really all for sure.
- 52:51[SPEAKER_01]: But I think another thing too is to kind of like know exactly what you want.
- 52:56[SPEAKER_01]: So even if you don't like go through the exercise of like dating 46 men, I think the exercise of having a spreadsheet of all the qualities that you, you want and don't want laid out.
- 53:08[SPEAKER_01]: So you have gone to the exercise that I think about it.
- 53:11[SPEAKER_01]: I think that makes more sense than anything else.
- 53:15[SPEAKER_00]: What exactly are the, because I feel like most people are, how they're looking for similar things, and they're looking for someone that's really.
- 53:23[SPEAKER_01]: Really?
- 53:23[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 53:26[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just not, not this, but I feel like it's,
- 53:31[SPEAKER_00]: I could get along with a lot of different types of people.
- 53:35[SPEAKER_00]: And I feel like in a way, when you know, you know, like, chemistry is a big part of the compatibility.
- 53:41[SPEAKER_00]: I think, like, with the spreadsheet, it's definitely talking about compatibility.
- 53:45[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, simply of new things, simply.
- 53:49[SPEAKER_01]: Do you like to go out?
- 53:50[SPEAKER_01]: Does he like to go out and like, how does that play in?
- 53:53[SPEAKER_01]: I'm an extreme extravert.
- 53:55[SPEAKER_01]: I love being out and I get energy from people, but I'm not necessary like trying to be partying all the time.
- 54:02[SPEAKER_01]: I don't like that either.
- 54:03[SPEAKER_01]: So it was very subtle for how I like to like really stimulate like I don't mind being at the grove or the Americana or at a casino or you know somewhere there's a lot of people but I don't deal with.
- 54:16[SPEAKER_01]: I don't mind that, food is another massive thing in my life.
- 54:21[SPEAKER_01]: I need to make sure whoever is rolling with me, you can be able to eat like, you know, chicken feet and you know, all the things and all the stuff too, right?
- 54:34[SPEAKER_01]: So there's like, that's just two of like the complicated things that I like and, you know,
- 54:41[SPEAKER_00]: That's valuable.
- 54:42[SPEAKER_00]: No, no, I honestly, that's a, that was a great answer to my question.
- 54:45[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, yeah, I guess that's, I have to, you got inventory.
- 54:51[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'm like how many points is that worth if they like chicken feet or not like yeah right and then there's degrees of that too because there's like then the other breakdown is like okay what foods must you have every week To not be unhappy like I need steak at least once a month in a steakhouse like I need that I don't know why and I need to go by myself or go with my partner, but
- 55:13[SPEAKER_01]: There's like the all these like little things that as a 50 year old dude, I'm like dialed in and I like to drive a lot and I like to just drive and be my car by myself listening to podcasts music.
- 55:24[SPEAKER_01]: I got to go to the gym.
- 55:26[SPEAKER_01]: I have to be in the gym once once a week.
- 55:28[SPEAKER_01]: Did your partner want that?
- 55:30[SPEAKER_01]: Do they, you know, I've been with people who love the gym and people who will never stuff in a gym and so I make such all these little things make such a huge difference.
- 55:40[SPEAKER_01]: And there's not a goeshamos for sure, which I think is very important to list.
- 55:45[SPEAKER_00]: Hmm, okay, I'm gonna, I'm inspired now.
- 55:48[SPEAKER_00]: I think I will make it because those specific things, I'm like, yeah, because I was thinking more so of, like, compatibility in terms of,
- 55:59[SPEAKER_00]: Like, are they also creative?
- 56:01[SPEAKER_00]: I guess it's a little more basic.
- 56:03[SPEAKER_01]: That's your question, too.
- 56:05[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 56:05[SPEAKER_01]: Do you want to hook up with a creative guy or non-creative guy?
- 56:08[SPEAKER_01]: That's such a big thing that we don't think about because I'm a friend.
- 56:13[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not naming names, but I'm a friend.
- 56:14[SPEAKER_01]: Like, no matter how beautiful the woman is, no matter how compatible, like on a day-to-day, cool, and everything,
- 56:25[SPEAKER_01]: If that person has no ability to understand the creative process, you'll find out within a few dates and he just won't, he won't, I've seen this.
- 56:35[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, oh my god, and this is such a
- 56:46[SPEAKER_01]: thing and and it's sometimes it's like the woman will have that creative thing that that that ability but won't be pretty enough to him or won't be whatever enough you know but so so you got to know like what that flavor and just like this whole manifesting business right like you you talk about vision board and you talk about like knowing if you can't imagine or
- 57:14[SPEAKER_01]: You find it.
- 57:15[SPEAKER_01]: Find it and hone in on that individual or that entity.
- 57:19[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, because it's almost like a meta-spiritual thing if you think about it, right?
- 57:24[SPEAKER_00]: Mm.
- 57:25[SPEAKER_00]: We have a few things.
- 57:27[SPEAKER_00]: One, does your friend have a phone number?
- 57:28[SPEAKER_00]: Is he still single?
- 57:29[SPEAKER_00]: Is he still?
- 57:31[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, damn, let me.
- 57:32[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 57:33[SPEAKER_01]: I think he's perfectly the right age, actually.
- 57:39[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 57:40[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, yeah, my psychic that I went to New York with she was smoking a cigarette He was smoking a cigarette at the market at the farmer's market.
- 57:49[SPEAKER_00]: She said sit down.
- 57:50[SPEAKER_00]: You're going to find He's we've worked in film is a initial circle of Jay and you're going to be introduced to him through friends That's that's all I'm going to say about that.
- 58:04[SPEAKER_01]: I'm interesting
- 58:05[SPEAKER_00]: But creativity to me, I think is a very valuable thing because my life is so consumed by creativity and if they are not a creative person, I feel like they don't understand me to be honest.
- 58:15[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I don't like, yeah, let me get a world now.
- 58:19[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe we got to get Ola on with me and Ola, and we can really talk about, are you down with that?
- 58:24[SPEAKER_00]: Are you down with that?
- 58:26[SPEAKER_00]: I need help.
- 58:27[SPEAKER_00]: I even does regret for it.
- 58:28[SPEAKER_01]: Oh my God, would you, should we do this?
- 58:30[SPEAKER_01]: Me and Ola, would you do it?
- 58:33[SPEAKER_00]: I would do it.
- 58:35[SPEAKER_01]: And all is an absolute badass.
- 58:36[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you can look up for everybody should be looking up.
- 58:38[SPEAKER_01]: All is OLA, OLA, I mean, I think it's just grounds for more content for you and for her for me.
- 58:47[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, the three of us, it's, it's, it's, it's, I think that would be great.
- 58:53[SPEAKER_01]: That would be great.
- 58:53[SPEAKER_01]: I think he's whatever she would give me, like, oh my god, I want, I need her seats to this now.
- 59:02[SPEAKER_00]: I've been crumbling a very like, my, my brand has become very, really relationship and dating oriented.
- 59:08[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 59:09[SPEAKER_01]: There we go then.
- 59:09[SPEAKER_01]: I think we gotta do it.
- 59:10[SPEAKER_01]: We gotta do it.
- 59:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 59:11[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you.
- 59:12[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you very much.
- 59:13[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 59:13[SPEAKER_01]: Always awesome.
- 59:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 59:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 59:15[SPEAKER_01]: Everybody, oh, L, A, P, O, L, A.
- 59:17[SPEAKER_01]: You can, and she speaks perfect Vietnamese, perfect English.
- 59:20[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, perfect.
- 59:20[SPEAKER_01]: Perfect.
- 59:21[SPEAKER_01]: her communication skills are perfect yeah and her videos are her clips are are just absolutely amazing and what she has to say is fun she's got your energy she's got like yeah she's a little bit older than you so she's been through the search and I'm sure she can address the the trials and tribulations that that you've been going through this is fun
- 59:41[SPEAKER_00]: It's will be fun.
- 59:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 59:43[SPEAKER_01]: Awesome.
- 59:43[SPEAKER_01]: I'll get this set up.
- 59:44[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you so much.
- 59:46[SPEAKER_01]: I really appreciate you being so open and it's fun and we're going to do part two with Ola.
- 59:53[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 59:53[SPEAKER_00]: So it's amazing.
- 59:54[SPEAKER_00]: Can I thank you so much?
- 59:55[SPEAKER_01]: My pleasure.
- 59:57[SPEAKER_01]: I'm so happy that we finally did it.
- 59:59[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, for sure, for sure.
- 1:00:00[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I'll talk to you later.
- 1:00:02[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 1:00:02[SPEAKER_01]: Thanks, Mookie.
- 1:00:03[SPEAKER_01]: We'll talk to you later.
- 1:00:03[SPEAKER_01]: Have a good weekend.
- 1:00:04[SPEAKER_00]: It's you.
- 1:00:05[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you.
- 1:00:05[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 1:00:06[SPEAKER_01]: Bye.
