- 0:26None. We're live.
- 0:34Welcome to the All Balls No Filler podcast.
- 0:37Live from the cabin Kitchen. I'm Zach.
- 0:40He's Brad. Hello there and.
- 0:43Behind the scenes, we have a man that once saved a stranded cat
- 0:46that was stuck up a tree. He's researcher Cal.
- 0:50Researcher Cal He's a man of the people, isn't he?
- 0:52And a man of the kittens. He is indeed.
- 0:55How are you doing today mate? All right mate, I'm all right.
- 0:59It's it's been nice having a couple of days away from the old
- 1:03full time job. So feeling refreshed, feeling
- 1:05ready and raring to go. Yeah.
- 1:07How about yourself? You good?
- 1:09Yeah, long weekend mate. I'm not going to lie to you.
- 1:11I had a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a long run on the old
- 1:15shandies. I think it was.
- 1:17That's what I'm putting it down to anyway.
- 1:18But other than that, it was fun. Weird weekend.
- 1:20There were no football, I must admit that, but as something
- 1:23else kind of filled my film, a fix.
- 1:26But we'll go into that a bit later on, mate.
- 1:27We'll go into that a bit later on.
- 1:29So what we got in store for today?
- 1:34So it's our first ever episode without any NFL, although it's
- 1:39still happening that, you know, the the train never stops, does
- 1:43it? But yeah, so we're going to
- 1:45we're going to visit the whole season.
- 1:46We're going to review the season.
- 1:47We're going to have a look at what went well for teams, what
- 1:50didn't go so well for teams. Visit right the way back to the
- 1:53draft of last year and see how those those guys got on.
- 1:56And then of course, as always, we will have our all of the
- 1:59balls. And a new segment today from
- 2:02researcher Cali's is lined up. A nice one, and quite a
- 2:05appropriately timed 1, but I'm looking forward to it just to
- 2:08sort of visit back and look at what was quite a weird but
- 2:14interesting season really for the NFL.
- 2:17Yeah, it, it felt like one of them for me, where the season
- 2:21just started and finished. I know it sounds really daft,
- 2:24but I can't really remember it. It being like it over really
- 2:28quickly is what I'm trying to say.
- 2:29It just seemed to like all the opening weekends here and now
- 2:33it's playoffs, the, the the whole season in the middle just
- 2:37kind of disappeared to me. But it was an enjoyable season.
- 2:40I'm looking back to, I'm looking forward to kind of going back
- 2:43through it from the, the draft picks and, and, and the teams
- 2:46and have a bit of a review and given our really professional
- 2:50and accurate research and, and like, you know, views on, on
- 2:55the, on the team big clubs. Very well educated analysis
- 3:01you're going to get in this episode.
- 3:02I think that's absolutely nothing from researcher Cal
- 3:06because he he knows nothing, as we've discovered over the last
- 3:08few years, last few weeks. Sorry, research Carl may be an
- 3:12optimistic name there. I'm kidding.
- 3:15He does a lot of great work in the background.
- 3:17But of course, we are not analysts.
- 3:20We do not pretend to be analysts.
- 3:21But we'll, I'm sure we'll try and get stuck in the best we can
- 3:25as we as we head back through the 2025 season, which is also
- 3:29something that I've found really difficult to to get my head
- 3:33around even still today. The fact that they call it 2025
- 3:36season even though it finishes in 26 and like, I don't know,
- 3:40it's a weird one. Yeah, it's when when trying to
- 3:43find out and trying to do research and you type in the
- 3:452025, you always find yourself second guessing is this the
- 3:48right season? Like, you know, I think, I think
- 3:51what we're doing there when we did our Super Bowl night, I did
- 3:53the Super Bowl quiz and I'm researching things.
- 3:55I'm like 2025 MVP. But it's 2026 when he's awarded
- 3:59like have I got the right 1? Double checking four or five
- 4:02different outlets to find out which one if I'm making sure
- 4:04it's right. But, you know, we got there in
- 4:06the end and it's it's, you know, hopefully as accurate as it can
- 4:10be. So how could all I mean to?
- 4:13We're sorry. Go on mate.
- 4:15Go on. We'll go on.
- 4:17Last wait and see the latest is killing us again, right.
- 4:20We're going to look into the draft picks to start off with
- 4:24right. So we're going to have a look
- 4:25through the the the notable draft picks from this year, see
- 4:30where see where they were where they ended up.
- 4:32Did they live up to expectation is the main one.
- 4:36If you're if you listen to this, we have got it all on screen
- 4:38now. We've got a few notable notable
- 4:40names up on screen now, but with me and Brad are just going to go
- 4:43through and give our kind of views on on these.
- 4:45I think we have to start at the top and at pick one O 1 which
- 4:51will become Ward. Now again, personal view on
- 4:55things like this with with these players.
- 4:58Did you live up to expectation? I'm going to say yes, but I
- 5:03think the team let him down. Yeah, I mean, I I fully agree.
- 5:09Like it's, it's always, it's like a blessing and a curse,
- 5:12isn't it? As being that sort of first
- 5:15drafted quarterback because you know you're going to a crap
- 5:20team. Really, unless something weird
- 5:23has happened, that season's just had a really off year.
- 5:27You go into a team that's not great really.
- 5:31The Titans is probably an an acceptable team to go to because
- 5:36you've got you've got those bad teams that are just bad for
- 5:38various reasons, whether it's like a poor GM or a poor head
- 5:42coach or, you know, they're going to rebuild, for example.
- 5:46But then there's some teams like where it's, it's just a bad
- 5:49organisation to go to. Like you always see the Browns
- 5:52up there, don't you? You know, they've had the odd
- 5:54year where they're not, but you're just thinking not the
- 5:56Browns, not the Browns, not the Browns.
- 5:57So like, if I was a quarterback and I knew I was pretty much
- 6:01guaranteed to be a first overall, I don't think the
- 6:04Titans is a bad place to land. I think I agree with you really.
- 6:07It was just for coaching, I think, because you saw, didn't
- 6:10you, the second-half of the season, he really started to
- 6:13show and he had moments like he had a pass in each game where
- 6:18it's like, yeah, you can see. You can see that the skills
- 6:21there and obviously the skills there, you can see it.
- 6:25But obviously as he developed through the season and the
- 6:27coaching change mid midway through like this started to
- 6:31pick up a little bit and Cam Ward started to pick up.
- 6:33So I think it'll be an interesting one next year.
- 6:36You know, you've got Dabo who will be sort of running the
- 6:41offence there, which I don't know, is he, is he overrated?
- 6:46Is he not as a coach? I don't know.
- 6:47He had success at the Bills, He had very little success at the
- 6:51Giants. So was the Bills success down to
- 6:54Josh Allen? Who knows, We'll see, but you'd
- 6:56like to think they've got some quality coaching around the team
- 7:01to maybe allow him to go on to see, you know, year two, season
- 7:052 and and show that progression hopefully and make that leap.
- 7:09Yeah, I liked him. I think he showed a lot of
- 7:10promise. I'm not going to lie.
- 7:11I think he he would excite. He had a lot of like off the
- 7:13cuff kind of plays within within the offence, and that's a bad
- 7:19sign for the offence because they get like, you know, they're
- 7:21allowing people to get through to him.
- 7:22He's got to make these off the cuff plays, but at the same time
- 7:24it's big. He shows a bit like that Caleb
- 7:26Williams kind of esque of the mobility and the accuracy at the
- 7:29same time while going through now, looking at his starts for
- 7:32the year, he's done 3169 yards throughout the year.
- 7:35That's only 1000 yards more than Jackson Dart, who was was not a
- 7:42not a top ten pick. I don't, I don't believe and but
- 7:45was, you know, he was quite a high profile name on that.
- 7:49So it was it's nice. It's it's good to see and you
- 7:53can see that kind of that, that potential there.
- 7:58Now the issues with him is the turnovers that they were there
- 8:02they had and I think he's still learning the NFL game.
- 8:06And this goes back to what you said about, you know, if you
- 8:08pick one O 1 in your QB, you're starting.
- 8:10I think you could say that within any of the QBs in the top
- 8:1332 picks. If you're picked as a QB in that
- 8:15top 32 picks, you should be long gone are the days of like Aaron
- 8:19Rodgers sitting in the Brett Favre for however many years to
- 8:22learn the the game. You know, you are right.
- 8:26We're drafting you now straight out of college.
- 8:28You've got to learn a lot of them have never called plays
- 8:30before. Like you've got to learn to play
- 8:32call or not not call play, sorry, like call plays in the
- 8:34huddle, shall I say. A lot of them have never like
- 8:36read the plays out, especially when it's coming through the in
- 8:38years and be able to read the defence at the same time, which
- 8:43they need to. It's it's hard to see.
- 8:45Look at Sam down on Baker May for the two prime examples of
- 8:48coming out of college not really doing what they what they can do
- 8:53because I think the pressure just got too and it was a bit
- 8:55too much to begin with. And a couple of years in the
- 8:57NFL, you're a Super Bowl champion.
- 8:59So yeah, I, I, I agree. I think I think the potential's
- 9:03there for him. But, well, only time will tell
- 9:07with this, with this year 2 for sure.
- 9:12Another big name within the draft was the dual threat man
- 9:16himself. Where's he going to play wide
- 9:18receiver? Where's he going to play DB?
- 9:20What's he going to do? Mr Travis Hunter was arguably
- 9:26one of the most exciting draft picks in my opinion, coming out
- 9:29of the draft because of all that.
- 9:31It was up there with the we don't know what to expect
- 9:34because he's played so well in college on both sides of the
- 9:36ball. We don't know what to expect.
- 9:38I I've I've heard and read that next year they're kind of
- 9:41focusing more as a wide receiver.
- 9:45Is that correct? More more full time cornerback.
- 9:48Sorry, thank you. Research Carl, then wide
- 9:51receiver next year, which I'd I can see because he had some, he
- 9:55had some good shutdown, shutdown things, shutdown plays going on.
- 9:59But what were your view on Mr. Hunter this year?
- 10:04I think he's a bit of a let down to be honest, if I'm just blunt,
- 10:07but I don't think that's necessarily a reflection on him
- 10:11as a player or him as a as an athlete.
- 10:13I think it's just, I think it kind of comes with the territory
- 10:16that if you're playing a bit of both you, you're splitting your
- 10:20investment in that position. So like college is a very
- 10:24different game to the NFL. You know that the offences that
- 10:29they use a very different, the the defensive coverages that
- 10:32they use a very different. I think what, what I read last
- 10:37year was that they would essentially when he was at
- 10:41college, they would essentially he was pretty much training wise
- 10:45more of a full time cornerback, but then they would design
- 10:50specific plays as a wide receiver, which is where he he,
- 10:55he knew that limited number of plays that he was involved in
- 10:58basically, and they would execute in that way.
- 11:01And I think my gut probably says if you're going to capitalise on
- 11:04him in the NFLI, don't think that's a bad way to go.
- 11:07So I think focusing in more on cornerback is probably the right
- 11:10way to do it. And then you've got some design
- 11:13set plays and I think obviously some of those need to be some of
- 11:18those need to be like almost decoy plays as well.
- 11:22You know, Oh, right, Travis is in.
- 11:24Let's double team him because it's a set play.
- 11:26Oh no, it's not going to him. You know, that sort of stuff.
- 11:28If you if you've got the smarts about you, which obviously the
- 11:30NFL coaches do. But I think the promise is
- 11:35there. The potential's there.
- 11:36He's an athlete. Obviously, you know, he's you
- 11:39don't go second overall for no reason and you don't have the
- 11:41success that he had at college for no reason.
- 11:44Obviously he had the injury which ruled him out for much of
- 11:47the season, but I think even in the early games when he was on,
- 11:51you could see there's something there again.
- 11:53But I, I just don't think it was quite a play like that's going
- 11:56to take a couple of years I think to really be that big
- 11:59explosive player, I think. I agree and and going back to
- 12:03the him doing both sides of the ball at college and and and the
- 12:07plays that they designed for him.
- 12:09I had the same thing as well, but and a lot of the team
- 12:12meetings happened at the same time.
- 12:14So if the offence in that offensive team meeting in the
- 12:16NFL on the defence operating their team at the same time, it
- 12:19can't be in both. So it's hard for you to learn
- 12:21both sides of the ball. And you know, there's no, no
- 12:25secret, no doubt about it that this guy is a stood and I
- 12:27genuinely think that whichever direction he takes full time,
- 12:30whether that is wide receiver or cornerback, he will be an All
- 12:33Star player in that position. I genuinely think he's a he's a
- 12:37phenomenal athlete. But I agree what you said last
- 12:40year because he was splitting himself both ways.
- 12:41He had some breakout plays, some good shutdowns and some decent
- 12:45catches, some decent yards. But I don't think he'll ever be
- 12:50the best player. But if he's playing both ways, I
- 12:54think he does need to. It's nice in college to do in
- 12:56college. You know, the level in college
- 12:59you can be a * and being levels above the people you're playing
- 13:03against. So you can kind of get away.
- 13:04We're just jumping on for a couple of plays.
- 13:06If you've got 10 plays that I designed for you as a wide
- 13:08receiver, the NFL coach are going to pick up on this.
- 13:10Then they go into turn around and go, well, it's one of 10
- 13:13plays here. So we can, we can just manoeuvre
- 13:15things about. So I think if they're smart with
- 13:17how they do it next year. Yeah, the the injury did hurt
- 13:21him, which is which is obviously obviously because an injury, but
- 13:25the injury did hamper his his playing ability on the on the
- 13:27field, putting him on the bench. It would be nice to see him
- 13:32finish out the year and see where he actually finished off.
- 13:34Only one touchdown probably kind of pushed you a bit more towards
- 13:37that cornerback role. But yeah, it's it's, it's been
- 13:43one of them, one of them for me with him.
- 13:46I think he had to decide at the end of this year and the the
- 13:50pushing towards the right direction in my, in my personal
- 13:53opinion. Anyone stand out to you mate?
- 13:55Over the top 2. So we've gone through the top 2
- 13:59any any big ones for yourself that that I've kind of come out.
- 14:02We've got a big list inside, obviously, but.
- 14:06We have, yeah. And I think the ones for me, the
- 14:09there's the big, the big name. If we're thinking right back to
- 14:12the draft, I'm not necessarily thinking performance on field
- 14:15here, but the big name before this draft was should have
- 14:19Sanders, wasn't it? And I think he's, I'm sure we'll
- 14:24get to, you know, some of the other guys and stuff, But that
- 14:27whole scenario of where will he go?
- 14:29When will he go? Who will he go to?
- 14:32It was, it's probably one of the most odd draft scenarios that
- 14:39I've sort of experienced in a long time.
- 14:41And, and I don't know if that's because of his name.
- 14:45I don't know if it's because of how he portrays himself.
- 14:53I don't know if it was because he was being coached by his dad
- 14:57where he, you know, Colorado and but that was just like the whole
- 15:02big drama, wasn't it? And then there's the whole issue
- 15:05of like, he was kind of blacklisted and it was
- 15:08intentional to not draft him. And then obviously he fell so
- 15:12far that a team basically had to do it.
- 15:14And ironically, I mentioned the Browns.
- 15:15That's where he ended up. But I don't know, like I just
- 15:19think I mean at the time, what were your thoughts on like that
- 15:23whole scenario? Obviously we know how the season
- 15:25panned out and we know what happened there.
- 15:27And you know, he he had a mixed rookie season when he actually
- 15:32came in. I don't think he was atrocious.
- 15:34I don't think he was brilliant. He was fine, I guess.
- 15:40But the whole draft scenario around Shadur, like what was
- 15:43your thoughts like leading up to the draft and like immediately
- 15:46after the draft? Oh, for me, I don't have many
- 15:52positive things to say about the guy.
- 15:54Personally. I think he's arrogant.
- 15:56I think he's arrogant is what let him down and got him got him
- 15:59knocked down. So many, so many picks and so
- 16:02many rounds. I think there were a rumour
- 16:03going round or a news that I can go around that the Ravens
- 16:06contacted him and say we're going to draft you next, Eddie
- 16:08said. I said, Nah, I don't want to be
- 16:09behind Lamar Jackson. Understandable, because he wants
- 16:12to obviously get on the field and stuff.
- 16:13But at the same time they're lucky for NFL team rings.
- 16:16Me, I don't give a shit who is I'm going to be grateful.
- 16:18I'm going to go out there and try and fight for, you know,
- 16:20looking at the season that Lamar had, if it had put a decent
- 16:22shift in at at quarterback, there could have been talk of
- 16:25him of him potentially getting a couple of reps on that field if
- 16:28he was hurt, as what the backroom staff are saying about
- 16:30Lamar. So, you know, but you know, if
- 16:32if but some maybes the the shadow thing for me more than
- 16:36anything else is I think the moment the Browns took him, the
- 16:41Browns were going to play him. The Browns had done the
- 16:44organisation, had this name, had this media personality,
- 16:48regardless to what he'd done on that field.
- 16:50The moment he goes back on that field, he weren't getting
- 16:52dropped because of that media personality.
- 16:54Had it brought limelight to it brought a personality again to
- 16:58it with a Johnny, the Johnny Football, the Johnny Manziel
- 17:00vibe to to the Browns again, because he because of all this,
- 17:04this big name coming in. And yeah, obviously Baker
- 17:07Mayfield well as well, but I think there's just been been a
- 17:09bit more because of shadows family and his and his I mean,
- 17:13he were he were a good QB at Colorado, but you know, you take
- 17:17his family away from him and that media away from him and he
- 17:20he's a fifth. He's a fifth round pick in my
- 17:22opinion. Like he's not the best QB in the
- 17:24draft by a by a by a mile. I just think it was shown and
- 17:28and his the media brought him to it.
- 17:30And evidently that's why he got into pro ball, because of his
- 17:33media side of things. It's an interesting one with the
- 17:36Browns though, isn't it? It's like it's it's one of those
- 17:39weird situations where you couldn't necessarily win that
- 17:46situation. You couldn't necessarily lose.
- 17:48And I probably don't say this about the Browns very well ever,
- 17:52but I think the fact that they took him and where they took
- 17:56him, like putting that aside, I think they kind of played it the
- 18:00best way they could in a way. They didn't start Amy.
- 18:04I think he was third string, wasn't it to begin with.
- 18:06And then if I remember him rightly here, he ended up in the
- 18:11first, he ended up starting because obviously they played
- 18:14Dylan Gabriel. And then I'm sure obviously
- 18:17who's who's drafted 2, excuse me, two rounds prior as as
- 18:21research. Carl's just chiming in with SO2
- 18:25rookies. They sitting behind Dylan
- 18:29Gabriel and behind was it Flacco was starting at the time and
- 18:36obviously Flacco, they moved on and that was the right thing to
- 18:40do. I think they started the season
- 18:42with the right guy and they moved him on and they had to
- 18:44look at these two, two quarterbacks.
- 18:47I think that was the right move then for them.
- 18:50Obviously Gabriel picked up an injury and then Shadow was like
- 18:55he was forced to start and as I say, he didn't set the world on
- 18:58fire. He didn't have horrendous play
- 19:01all of the time. He wasn't great, but it wasn't
- 19:04like he was the worst quarterback to ever step on the
- 19:08field. But it they they kind of played
- 19:11it right where they've been able to see a bit of the two.
- 19:14The only thing is now I think with Dylan Gabriel fit, they're
- 19:19going to have that same media circus next season in the
- 19:22offseason because it's going to be right.
- 19:24Who's starting, what's happening?
- 19:25It's. It's should have Stein, Dylan
- 19:28Gabriel's never stepping foot on that field for the Brown, for
- 19:30Browns again. And they've killed his career,
- 19:32right? So he even needs to move on now
- 19:33to a team that needs a QB that might be looking to off load and
- 19:38get a cheap QB for the likes of Arizona getting getting Kyla and
- 19:43just trying to maybe take in that cap that cap go or even
- 19:45someone who's that's it sounds like Miami to get shot of tour
- 19:48and they've got that cap it and they need a cheap QB.
- 19:51They've got a second. They've got a third round draft
- 19:53pick there going because I I can guarantee now the game at dirt
- 19:57cheap to get him away. So they can put the focus in on
- 20:00should they don't want that media circus again.
- 20:02They don't want that who's starting.
- 20:04They want to be able to focus A-Team around the.
- 20:06Right and QB and to MetLife a bit easier than having to have
- 20:09this Hoo ha. We've got two young QBs.
- 20:12If you if you're Joe Flacco and shadow, then you got you can
- 20:15kind of back it where they're going to go with younger guy put
- 20:18some effort in. But they've got 2, two draft
- 20:21picks here, two young, young QBs here that are going to arguably
- 20:26fight for it, and they're just going to cause commotion when
- 20:28everyone knows the Browns are going to make the wrong
- 20:31decision, Choose to choose to choose Sanders because he's the
- 20:36media guy. Yeah, it's it's, it's just a
- 20:42Browns situation to be in, isn't it?
- 20:44Like it's definitely going to happen.
- 20:46I don't think they'll move on from from Dylan Gabriel.
- 20:50I don't. I think it's just going to be a
- 20:53a typical Browns media circus shambles of a pre season for
- 20:58them and then they'll just do something really strange like, I
- 21:02don't know, taking a free agent quarterback a week before the
- 21:05season start them instead. That's why wouldn't you Browns
- 21:09Exactly, but. Exactly.
- 21:11Looking at some other big names within there.
- 21:13Just want to ask you a question here regarding a couple of the
- 21:15players. We're not really touched on
- 21:16them, but we can do within this. If you're going to choose a
- 21:18rookie from the last year's draft to build your kind of team
- 21:21around, having seen what you've seen this year and you have
- 21:23Macmillan Gente and you have Cam Ward, who are you choosing and
- 21:27why? Oh, that's a tough one.
- 21:31You, you can't with a curveball. They're throwing Cam Ward in
- 21:35because your quarterbacks are so vital.
- 21:39I know, I know. Like, I think if it was McMillan
- 21:44or Jaunty, it will be McMillan. I think getting a big name wide
- 21:51receiver 1 is probably better and more important than having a
- 21:57big name running back #1 although they both make a vital
- 22:00difference. But we know through longevity of
- 22:02careers, typically receivers out last year, running backs.
- 22:05And equally it's that QB wide receiver relationship that's so
- 22:09important. Because if you don't have that
- 22:12and you know you're hammering the ball from the running back,
- 22:14they're just going to stuff the run.
- 22:15And then if you don't have that connection with the receiver,
- 22:17then what you're going to do? So I think I'd have gone on them
- 22:20to it's the Cam Ward thing that throws me.
- 22:22And I think quarterbacks are so volatile to see.
- 22:27I think if a wide receiver explodes in in the first year,
- 22:29which McMillan did, I thought it was outstanding.
- 22:34I think it, you know, I think he'll be a bit a solid receiver
- 22:37for his his whole career, but the quarterbacks are difficult
- 22:41to judge. I think it's probably one of the
- 22:44hardest positions to really sort of analyse and know what they're
- 22:52going to be when they come out college into the NFL and how
- 22:54that converts. And it's probably one of the
- 22:56hardest ones really. My gut says Cam Ward, I think
- 23:03just because he's a quarterback and he's definitely shown he can
- 23:05do it to a point. But I think it's so important
- 23:10that you get the right coaches around a quarterback, I think.
- 23:15Yeah, same question to you then. Yeah, it's tough.
- 23:19It's three different positions. Yeah, three different positions
- 23:23there, right? And I think I would go down the
- 23:25McMillan route personally. Now, not take anything away from
- 23:29Joe Flacco because he's a great quarterback, but he's not a
- 23:32young quarterback anymore. But look at what he did when he
- 23:34went to Cincinnati and he started moving the ball when Joe
- 23:37Burrow couldn't would be in the same offensive line.
- 23:40OK, now I understand he still got a hit and everything, but
- 23:42that's because he had two All Star receivers that he could
- 23:45guarantee throw that ball to under double triple coverage.
- 23:47Bring it down. Make the odds going forward.
- 23:49You can you can find someone like a Baker Mayfield or Sam
- 23:54down. I'm going to keep bringing these
- 23:55two because they are two prime examples of a round one QB year.
- 24:00One sometimes isn't the one. Now, obviously we we aren't
- 24:04going into the the specifics of Cam Ward.
- 24:07Is he right for your team type thing?
- 24:09And I get I'm not taking anything away from Cam Ward.
- 24:11I think is a phenomenal talent coming coming out of college.
- 24:14But I think there's a lot more work in there when you can pick
- 24:16up players that just didn't fit an organisation that can work
- 24:20with your guy. Like I think you take Marvin
- 24:24Harrison Junior, for instance, out of Arizona, you put him into
- 24:26a team with with a decent QB that time and and and he's going
- 24:30to be an All Star again. I think it's that fit.
- 24:32So for me, I like, I'd like to say find that wide receiver one
- 24:35and the longevity of it. For me it would be Macmillan.
- 24:39So who do you think, you know, thinking about back to the draft
- 24:43and look, I guess we'll look at the teams generally as as we
- 24:47move through this app. But do you think there's a team?
- 24:51Two questions actually, which team got a steal of the draft?
- 24:54So which team do you think you've got the best value if you
- 24:57like, you know who, who picks the best value at what point?
- 25:00I'm not saying it has to be a late round pick or anything like
- 25:02that, but who got the best bang for the buck?
- 25:05And then which team do you think had like the best draft overall,
- 25:12Like who? Who impressed you?
- 25:14Oh, so for me, I've got one guy that is my like steal of the
- 25:19draft. And I just think in this
- 25:22positions hard to come by someone that makes impact
- 25:25everywhere he goes. And that's Tyler Warren.
- 25:29I think Tyler Warren was a stud all year solid.
- 25:34He blocked well. He he he caught the ball well.
- 25:37He was just nearly 1000 yards receiving on a tight end in your
- 25:41rookie year. He's just great.
- 25:43And for me, I think he is that steal at the at the open.
- 25:47I mean, you could you could go like a camp scatter bow, for
- 25:49instance. But like Amy, I got injured.
- 25:51But for me, he's just like that boom.
- 25:57He made he made an impact all season.
- 26:01Who had the best draft? Oh God, now that's a tough one.
- 26:09That is a tough one. Who improved the most from the
- 26:13draft? God, you've caught me on there.
- 26:21It's a bit. Of a it's a bit of a loaded
- 26:23question. It's not loaded, but the only
- 26:26reason that I sort of linked those two questions for me is
- 26:30Kyle Manangai. Is that how I pronounce it?
- 26:32Kyle Manangai. So the bears picked him up and I
- 26:35think it was like round six or seven.
- 26:37I'm sure it's seven real late pick and he was just in fact, if
- 26:43my, my in depth analysis and research tells me he actually
- 26:48apparently led the rookie running backs in, in production
- 26:52from the line of scrimmage in terms of yards and impact,
- 26:56etcetera. I think he had five touchdowns.
- 27:00He had 700 plus yards, which you know we've got.
- 27:05We've got bigger stats than that.
- 27:08It's the impact that. Value.
- 27:10Yeah, that value in the 7th pick.
- 27:12And I think the reason I sort of had those two questions sort of
- 27:15come to my mind was that I think the Bears had a really, really
- 27:19solid draft. And we talk about organisations
- 27:23that like perpetually sort of show dysfunction, maybe not
- 27:27dysfunction, but they they haven't, they've not been a big
- 27:29name have they're in donkeys of years.
- 27:34But I think, you know, they they picked up Loveland, they picked
- 27:37up Luther Burden, they picked up Menangi.
- 27:42Like they were just, they just had a, for me, a solid draft and
- 27:46then that sort of reflected with picking up the right coach and a
- 27:52second year quarterback. And then they had the success
- 27:55they did this year, probably ahead of schedule as I spoke
- 27:58right in previous episodes, but I thought they were absolutely
- 28:01solid generally. So for me, my team would be and
- 28:06it's a curveball on this one a bit a bit Giants.
- 28:08I think for me who had the best draft in terms of the players
- 28:12that came through taking Jackson down and come Scott bow in in
- 28:16particular to move forward. You got two players.
- 28:19They if providing the providing they can keep fit and I think
- 28:24they've got the right coach now to go into next year and they
- 28:26can keep fit, keep helping. Stop making stupid decisions.
- 28:31There could be two decent players there to kind of base
- 28:34your your your team around. So with that being said, before
- 28:39we move on to like the teams and his his view on the teams final
- 28:42one for the the the draft itself.
- 28:45Which rookie then in your opinion will have the best year
- 28:482? That is that's a tough one.
- 28:56I think in terms of sort of progress from year one to two,
- 29:01like maybe I don't know, it's so hard to say what the best year 2
- 29:05would be as a player, but I think in terms of progress made
- 29:08the leap that they make, I'm really quite excited if you
- 29:13know, thinking big names. I'm I'm quite looking forward to
- 29:16seeing Jhansi at at Raiders. I think the Clint Kubiakaya is
- 29:23exciting. I think, you know, you saw the
- 29:28the impacts the Walker made at Seahawks and I think if you've
- 29:34got the right coaching set up around him and you've got the
- 29:38right, you know, the draft well again this year.
- 29:42And I think they're also going to have to rely on him a little
- 29:44bit more. Well, maybe not more, but odds
- 29:49on how they're going to take they're going to take Mendoza
- 29:51first overall. So what's the best way to set up
- 29:54a rookie quarterback for success is to have a running back that
- 29:58you can rely on and a run game that you can rely on.
- 30:01And I think having him there, you know, he had a right a
- 30:03massive impact from the get go anyway, didn't he?
- 30:05Like he's 3 down back. He you know, he he the run
- 30:10game's been inconsistent for years and he took that upper
- 30:13level. Was he the best running back in
- 30:16the NFL? No, he wasn't.
- 30:18Does he have the potential to be?
- 30:19I think he does. We won't even get into a stance.
- 30:24I'm not even going to entertain that conversation.
- 30:27We all saw the the comments and the memes about, oh, he's in
- 30:30this stance now and look what he's done.
- 30:31It's a load of crap, but I think he's got the potential to make a
- 30:36huge, huge leap in Year 2. Yeah, yeah, I've been, I've been
- 30:41inclined to agree with you there.
- 30:43It's a strong position to have. If you've got a good running
- 30:45back, one that you can you can rely on going forward.
- 30:48For me, it's Cam Ward. I think Cam Ward is just going
- 30:50to he's, he's going to excel in year 2.
- 30:52I think he's going to be is exciting enough to excel.
- 30:54I think he has that, that potential to have that, that,
- 30:59that follow up footsteps of the Caleb Williams year one to year
- 31:032 and and have that exciting year.
- 31:05And I think if it does, it will make the just the, the, the
- 31:08league and the the season a lot more exciting to have with a lot
- 31:11more of these QBs in. So moving on to the teams now,
- 31:14mate of what we saw this year and talking purely from a farm
- 31:19point of view, we're taking the taking the stats kind of kind of
- 31:22out of it for the time being. Teams from, you know, start of
- 31:27the year. Who did you prove?
- 31:28Who do you think we're going to get to the Super Bowl?
- 31:30Who Who didn't live up to the expectations and who surprised
- 31:34you more than anything else? I think the big surprise for me
- 31:38and and I'll go out and say it from the get go because I've
- 31:41given them some hammer over the years, over the weeks we've been
- 31:43doing this. Sorry, I've said years instead
- 31:45of weeks about three times on this episode.
- 31:49The surprise to me was the Patriots, like they, you know,
- 31:52one of one of a few. I'd say the Patriots, the Hawks
- 31:56and the bears were probably the three for me that jumped out a
- 32:01lot more than I expected them to.
- 32:05I think there was always a bit of promise for the Bears.
- 32:08I think there was like a lot of expectation around the Ben
- 32:13Johnson thing, jumping up and sort of elevating the team if
- 32:19you like. But for me, the Patriots had a
- 32:22really solid season. They they excelled what they
- 32:27were expected to do and obviously reached the biggest
- 32:31game of the year. And what more can you ask from a
- 32:35team really at that point? I've just found out Instagram
- 32:38clip for for next week a dolphins fan saying the patriots
- 32:44up there. But yeah, it's I I would a would
- 32:50agree. And on that for me, the Kansas
- 32:57City didn't the hills city chiefs didn't live with the
- 32:59delivery to expectations from what they're doing in the past.
- 33:04I think they were one of the biggest let downs for me
- 33:08watching like the the year they've always had this kind of
- 33:14like how many more years have they got left of this dynasty
- 33:17run that they're having? And it was always going to come
- 33:19to end at some point. But I didn't think it would come
- 33:22to kind of as an abrupt. They just didn't seem to look
- 33:25like in my opinion anyway, like they were getting going now as a
- 33:28surprise team to who did well, the Bears.
- 33:32The bears from me from start to finish all year.
- 33:35Obviously they lost a few games to begin with, but like every
- 33:39every year was just a every year I've done you, I've just done AU
- 33:48every week was a surprise as well as what I was trying to
- 33:51say. It was exciting to watch.
- 33:55Keep improving, keep improving and it were good.
- 33:58Now, don't get me wrong, the Patriots, I agree with you are
- 34:00also we're also ahead of schedule was what we like to
- 34:04say. We're also good to kind of see
- 34:06him get going. But for me the the the most
- 34:09improved team for the year was was was the Bears.
- 34:13It'll be interesting to see where they go next season.
- 34:17Obviously it'll be it'll be year three of a rookie quarterback,
- 34:20which is normally the year that you see the big, big leap.
- 34:27And for Ben Johnson, who he came to the Bears with high
- 34:34expectations, but I think he sort of excelled them quite
- 34:37quickly, didn't he? And he and he took that offence
- 34:40to that next level. And obviously, like we've just
- 34:42said, they they drafted really well and they executed well on
- 34:47the field. And Williams looked the real
- 34:50deal this season. He had some absolutely beautiful
- 34:53throws, like some absolutely absolute Dimes.
- 34:57And I think it's just a lot of right pieces, right place, right
- 35:04time, sort of thing all coming together.
- 35:07It's funny you mentioned the Chiefs though, because it it was
- 35:09kind of a nice season generally, wasn't it with the teams this
- 35:12this year that were in the mix, like the Bears that they
- 35:17obviously they made the play offs.
- 35:18I think they won their division and it's nice to see some
- 35:24different teams in the mix. Chiefs had a less people on a
- 35:28crap year. Like it was really, really poor
- 35:30from their recent recent success.
- 35:34But it was nice to see. It was kind of nice to see.
- 35:37And that's not me bashing the Chiefs.
- 35:39It was just nice to see different teams in the mix.
- 35:42And I'll bash the chiefs. I'll bash them all day long.
- 35:47Yeah, I will bash them all down. They they were, they were ass
- 35:50and it and it showed like they they were nice because Mahomes
- 35:55just he's a fraud. It's not really he's really
- 35:59good, but it was just frustrating from a patriots
- 36:01point of view, watching someone take the dynasty to the dynasty
- 36:04lead. But I I would I would agree.
- 36:08I would agree from that guy going as as what a what a
- 36:13research coach brought a nice little factor in there for his
- 36:15gone from 11 and O1 score games in 2024 to O and 9 now.
- 36:19That's just not that's not an overnight turn around.
- 36:21Like it's kind of rare to see something happen now.
- 36:25Does the Travis Kelsey, Taylor Swift media have something to do
- 36:32with it because he's a key part of the offence and was it was
- 36:37the off field, the life that he's living?
- 36:40I don't. I don't think so.
- 36:44Because like you, you heard it a lot.
- 36:46So this is year 2 of him being involved with Taylor and you
- 36:54heard it in the first season, you heard it in the first season
- 36:58that always he's been distracted, blah, blah, blah,
- 37:01blah, blah. But then in the second season
- 37:03leading up to it, it was, you know, it's fully invested, it's
- 37:08full pre season, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 37:11So I don't know, like ultimately the professional athletes aren't
- 37:15there. We've been in relationships
- 37:17before. I think they're making a big
- 37:19song and dance about the fact that it's Taylor Swift.
- 37:21I think the year before, you know, she had a massive tour
- 37:23that he was attending and cameo in and stuff like that.
- 37:26So I think there's elements to it, but I don't know, it's an
- 37:31interesting one to see what happens next year.
- 37:37Obviously, if I'm if my research is right, he's a free agent
- 37:42technically. So it'll be interesting to see
- 37:46what happens. He's not said he's retiring.
- 37:49I'd assume that a bit of big song and dance about that.
- 37:51I think he's probably too arrogant to want to go out on a
- 37:53season like they had. I think that's probably the
- 37:55reason he didn't go out the season before and hoped he could
- 37:58sort of run it back. Does he retire a chief I?
- 38:02Don't think he's got to, I think.
- 38:07Yeah, because I think like when Gronkowski didn't like initially
- 38:10retire as a Patriot, I think I think he should have done.
- 38:14Obviously I could see why he went and then why he wouldn't
- 38:16have gone anywhere. I could suck he went elsewhere
- 38:24as such, but I don't know. I think I agree.
- 38:26I think he does. I think he retired as a chief.
- 38:28I think he's got nothing else to do.
- 38:30I mean, he could do a Philip Rivers thing, couldn't he?
- 38:32And go to another team and then retire with the team he wanted
- 38:37to retire with. And then go back to that team
- 38:41again three years after like. Could you imagine?
- 38:44That retiring a Chargers thing was just stupid, wasn't it?
- 38:47So yeah, it wouldn't surprise me if Kelsey did something stupid
- 38:49like that. But.
- 38:50No, so you we mentioned the Bears and you mentioned the
- 38:54Patriots in terms of surprising you how well they did this year.
- 38:59Who's ahead of their rebuild schedule then?
- 39:02Now we can we can kind of take the Patriots getting to the
- 39:07Super Bowl away because of the schedule and the Bears had a
- 39:11tougher schedule. So let's just talk like to what
- 39:15we've seen so far, who had that kind of impact this year?
- 39:21Who's who do you think ahead of their their rebuild as such?
- 39:27It's a difficult one because like the Colts were a really
- 39:34weird team at the beginning of the season and they they shocked
- 39:38me at first. I was thinking, oh, God, these,
- 39:40these are really, these are really showing something here.
- 39:43These are going to have a good go.
- 39:44They've got Danny Dimes and you know, a few nice pieces and, and
- 39:47they started so strong. I think it was like A7 on one
- 39:51start and then you know, I mean even more so.
- 39:56I remember sat in a local pub that we spoke about a few times.
- 40:00I remember watching the Colts absolutely dismantle the
- 40:04Dolphins on the 1st Sunday and I was like this is atrocious.
- 40:10We've been absolutely smashed a bit by the Colts.
- 40:13And then they had a real strong start to the season, like
- 40:14alright, OK, it makes me feel a little bit better actually.
- 40:16We've been smashed by a team that's good.
- 40:18And then it took that like 7 straight losses, I think it was.
- 40:21And, but I think they've potentially got some promise for
- 40:26future seasons. I think the Bears, I know we
- 40:31spoke quite a fair bit. The Bears are the team that
- 40:33stand out to me. Is that being ahead of the
- 40:35curve? It's definitely, definitely
- 40:37there for them. They're the they're the name,
- 40:41but I don't know, there wasn't many teams that jumped out to me
- 40:46this season of, of who'd gone through that big rebuild.
- 40:49I think if you look at teams that maybe over performed
- 40:51expectations, you know, the Panthers who won their division,
- 40:56although they won it with a losing record.
- 40:59I think the top three teams in there were Panthers books and
- 41:02Falcons all on an 8 and 9 record.
- 41:05Yeah. So they kind of they they're a
- 41:08bit mixed because they they stand out because they were in
- 41:10the play offs, but they're still a losing record.
- 41:13Also, the Bears was mentioned. The Broncos, I think have kind
- 41:18of overachieved. I think, you know, the the Bonex
- 41:23in his second year, absolutely smashing it.
- 41:29But, and I only saw this the other day, Zach and this'll,
- 41:32this'll make you happy a little bit.
- 41:34OK. In terms of strength and
- 41:35schedule, so I've hammered Patriots for it the entire time
- 41:38we've been doing this podcast. It's in its infancy, but the
- 41:42second easiest strength of schedule was Denver Broncos.
- 41:49So I don't know if you knew that or not, but I, I.
- 41:54Saw it the other day. So you got these two teams who
- 41:57were battling out for the AFC and obviously had the easiest
- 42:02schedules. The Texans, however, had one of
- 42:06the tougher ones, if I remember rightly.
- 42:08Now, don't quote me on this. You know, we said it's not going
- 42:11to be absolute balls to the wall analysis, but I'm sure the
- 42:14Texans had one of the harder strength of schedules, but
- 42:17actually still performed at 12:00 and 5:00.
- 42:20And I think they've got so much potential to be really, really
- 42:24dominant next year. So if you're looking at those
- 42:26teams that maybe are ahead of schedule, I don't know if that's
- 42:30the right phrase for Houston, but I think they they they
- 42:34definitely exceeded expectations and I think they've got the
- 42:38potential to maintain that next year as well.
- 42:41I think if, if my, my backing would be Houston on this just
- 42:46just before I go into my backing would be huge on this and the
- 42:49reasons why. And I agree with everything you
- 42:50said about the other teams. And there's there's teams that I
- 42:54think the Colts are in serious trouble in the next two years
- 42:58because I've got a lot of players on contracts and they're
- 43:02going to want pain. Taylor's going to be one of them
- 43:04that's going to take up a lot of their carpet.
- 43:06If they don't pay him, they're losing a big chunk of their they
- 43:09can they afford Taylor under QB. Now that's, that's a different
- 43:12story. I think the Colts are either
- 43:14going to go, if they don't play this correctly, they're going to
- 43:17be up Creek without a paddle within the next two years.
- 43:19Personally for me, the Houston Texans though, are one of the
- 43:23most dangerous teams within the next two years, within the next
- 43:27five years, if they haven't won a Super Bowl, I'll show me ours
- 43:29because they are. They have to.
- 43:31They have one side of the ball we need to work on now.
- 43:34They have recruited so well, signed so well, drafted so well
- 43:38in that in that defensive front that they don't have to worry
- 43:42about our defence now for the foreseeable and they can just
- 43:44worry about signing offensive players really.
- 43:47Now you look at other teams, let's take the Patriots, for
- 43:50instance, who, yes, are above their quote unquote schedule.
- 43:55Yes, they you know, they did really well this year, but they
- 43:58have areas on both sides of the ball that they need to work on
- 44:03going forward. Whereas like the Texans have one
- 44:06side of their ball kind of lockdown and it's quite an
- 44:09important side of the ball. Taking their schedule in to talk
- 44:12where they, you know, quote, UN quote, have one of the most had
- 44:16one of the one of the toughest schedules this year and still
- 44:20finished twelve and five with that defence just says, you know
- 44:22what, boys, I'm going to leave you all up to do what you're
- 44:25doing and I'm going to focus on this offensive side thing.
- 44:28Look at CJ Stroud as either man that's going to take us to a
- 44:30Super Bowl, probably not having a couple of years now.
- 44:34I don't think he is. I think he's a good QB, but I
- 44:36don't think he's elite QB. And then just looking around the
- 44:39other offence and seeing what else they can kind of pick up
- 44:42the free agents, which we'll get into soon, see what's available
- 44:45and go from there. So I think genuinely Houston,
- 44:47Texans could be a force to be reckoned with within the next
- 44:51two years minimum. But do you think?
- 44:53Do you think that the not the CJ not been elite?
- 44:58Do you think that really matters?
- 45:00Like I think I think I touched on it even last week or the week
- 45:03before and you know, if they've got an absolute solid defence,
- 45:08which they have, like that's a really solid defence.
- 45:13I'm you know, is that is Donald elite?
- 45:15Like I wouldn't say so. I thought he had an absolutely
- 45:17outstanding year, but I don't think he's elite.
- 45:20Is Drake may elite? No, not yet.
- 45:24He's got the potential. He's got the potential to be a
- 45:27real good quarterback. But did he show that he's elite
- 45:29so far? No, he showed he's a solid
- 45:32quarterback. He can run, but he did not look
- 45:35elite in the Super Bowl. CJ did look elite in Year 1.
- 45:40He looked he looked brilliant and there was so much hype about
- 45:43that. And I think it was just one of
- 45:44those seasons where he overachieved Season 1, So then
- 45:47season 2 and three, he looks poor.
- 45:50But if he's solid, if he's he's enough and his defence is elite
- 45:55and he's got a few good pieces around him like I think they
- 45:58could, I think they could go all the way.
- 46:01Yeah, maybe so and I think I think I think if you just get
- 46:05dead screwed up a bit more with this pressure like obviously,
- 46:07you know, the patriots crumble under pressure in the Super
- 46:11Bowl, but it's pot, you know, pot got a block and all that.
- 46:14But I think C JS big issue, especially in the offseason
- 46:17while in that postseason. Sorry was and the pressure, I
- 46:20think the pressure got to him. I just didn't think he'd made
- 46:22the right decisions that he should have done that he'd been
- 46:25doing all year round. And like you say, yeah, he's not
- 46:27elite. Thinking back here sumdial's not
- 46:29elite, but he got then he absolutely dominated and and he
- 46:33smashed it and he did really well.
- 46:34I think it's what you have around you.
- 46:36And again, yeah, I think if we just matures up a little bit
- 46:39again, that Houston Texans team is going to be something
- 46:44something to be to be now teams that should be good and are good
- 46:50but crumble. Are the Buffalo Bills really
- 46:53going to be a Super Bowl contender within the next 12 to
- 46:5724 months or not with the with the likes of the Texans kind of
- 47:02making that uprising, the Seahawks making that uprising
- 47:05the you know, the Buffalo Bills were at one point their team to
- 47:08be in and they couldn't get to the Super Bowl.
- 47:10I feel like now there's a lot of teams catching them up in that
- 47:13regular season level and that postseason level and that are
- 47:16just going to get there before them again.
- 47:19But are the are the basically the Bills are Super Bowl
- 47:22contender. I have this real like annoyance
- 47:27with the bills that and I know you'll say it's biassed but you
- 47:31know you're you're fandom is in the same division.
- 47:34I just always feel like the bills are it sounds mad
- 47:38considering where they get. I feel like they're overrated
- 47:41and I know that sounds crazy to say because they get the record
- 47:43they do and they've they're always in the play offs and
- 47:46they're always like up there in the play offs, but I just I just
- 47:50can't see it. They never feel like that
- 47:52complete team. You know, even just this most
- 47:56recent season. I'm I'm going to my own fandom
- 47:58like Miami, like took it to them big style Miami this season,
- 48:05like really, really took it. And on the flip side, though,
- 48:11they also the bills. This is reached the playoffs and
- 48:16and got to where they did. But I just don't I don't see
- 48:20them winning a Super Bowl. I don't see Josh Allen ever
- 48:23winning a super Super Bowl. I think he has potential, but I
- 48:28don't think he is the player that he's always made out to be.
- 48:32I don't think he deserved MVP last year.
- 48:34I think he's a brilliant quarterback.
- 48:35Would I take him at the Dolphins?
- 48:36Yes, I would right now, absolutely.
- 48:39But I don't think he is. I don't think he's a top five
- 48:44quarterback, personally. Not about that one.
- 48:48And I know, I know, I know that's bold, but I just, I don't
- 48:52think he changes. No, I'm probably saying this
- 48:58wrong. He does change the team, but I
- 48:59don't think he is someone who could go walk into any other
- 49:02team and be that deciding factor.
- 49:07I just think I think he's just so up and down.
- 49:12You can have those games where he's absolutely lights out and
- 49:14he is top five and he it's top two, top one, you know, but then
- 49:18he has them absolute stinker games where he is atrocious.
- 49:24And I know if you you know, we'll compare him to Brady,
- 49:26who's without a doubt the greatest of all time.
- 49:29If anyone wants to say he's not the mad until proven otherwise.
- 49:33But I never really remember him and I'm I'm sure there will be
- 49:36odd ones but I never really remember him having those
- 49:39absolutely stinker games. Like he might have averaged
- 49:44games you know? But I can't.
- 49:47I can't ever remember like remember him absolutely shit in
- 49:50the bed and completely basically losing his team the game.
- 49:55Whereas I have seen Josh Allen lose games for the Bills.
- 49:59For me, Josh Allen's, he's he's an established QB now.
- 50:01He's no longer the new guy. He's an established QB now.
- 50:03And I think the Bills for me are consistently above average in a,
- 50:11in a polite way to the Bills, like they're a good, they're a
- 50:13good team. And if they if the Bills beat
- 50:16you, they beat you. But at the same time they can be
- 50:18beaten and then, you know, researched, calculating clutch.
- 50:21They're the second worst rushing defence in the NFL, right?
- 50:25And teams picked up on that and team just ran against them and
- 50:29they just didn't know how to stop it.
- 50:30Now it's not all about Josh Allen.
- 50:31It's about the entire team. I get that.
- 50:33But at the same time, it's you kind of come as a collective,
- 50:37don't you? And I just, I feel like it gets
- 50:40to week 5 and it's, oh, the Bills of the Bills are on form
- 50:45now. The Bills are going to be
- 50:46getting to the Super Bowl, the Bills this, the Bills that.
- 50:48And then they just crumble and they just start looking a bit
- 50:50more mediocre. And how many years do you get of
- 50:55with the Bills being the Bills and like, don't run.
- 50:58They're a good team and they're a good organisation and you can
- 51:01only play what's in front of you.
- 51:03But that being said, do they keep balling it?
- 51:07Did they bottle it? When it comes to the bigger, the
- 51:09bigger stage and it gets to the latter end of the of the season
- 51:11when the need to put them them points in the bar.
- 51:15And I just I just don't think they do.
- 51:17I think they're a bit lot lost at times.
- 51:18And now in particular, they've they've had a they've had a bit
- 51:26of that coaching turn around. I think I'm, I keep using this
- 51:30two year kind of what where the team have been two year type
- 51:33thing, because I think 24 a month within in the NFL can be
- 51:35massive for a team. Look at the bears, for instance.
- 51:39Where will they be in two years time with this new coaching
- 51:42setup? Like, I don't know, I I I don't
- 51:46see it from there. But you mentioned the Miami
- 51:49Dolphins and putting it to the Bills, your Fins this year, I'm
- 51:56not going to lie to you, did exactly what I thought they were
- 51:58going to do. I thought they were just a bit
- 52:01meh. But then show the light, the
- 52:03opposite of the Bills. They're consistently below
- 52:06average in my opinion. But when they're above, when
- 52:08they play well, they absolutely dominate.
- 52:10And I'm just pointing that out. Like when they win, their win
- 52:12games good, but they were just a bit below average.
- 52:15What about your Fins? What were you view this year on
- 52:18your boys? It's so hard, isn't it?
- 52:24As a fan, you never want to see your team end that way that they
- 52:27did. And and like I'm I'm openly up
- 52:30being a Tua fan, but I think it's I think it's time for a
- 52:35change and I think it's come at the right time.
- 52:37And I might be Daniel fan. I think he's a great coach.
- 52:42It's a great mind. Is he a head coach?
- 52:48You know what I mean? Look at Tua with with Flo before
- 52:53and he was just woeful because he had a coach who didn't
- 52:57believe in him. And then you bring Mike McDaniel
- 52:59in and the impacts they had. I mean, that 2023 season, I
- 53:05think it was was absolutely unreal.
- 53:09You know, the Dolphins should have the record for the biggest
- 53:13victory against another team. And the only reason they didn't
- 53:16is because Mike McDaniels is a good guy and didn't put another
- 53:19couple of touchdowns on the Broncos.
- 53:21Like he went for a field goal when he could have just, I think
- 53:24it was, I mean, what was it like it was like a third down or
- 53:27something. He went for a field goal instead
- 53:29of like putting more points on him.
- 53:30Basically something stupid like that.
- 53:34But it just hit, it hit a wall, I think.
- 53:39And I know this could never work in the NFL, but what would have
- 53:42been amazing is to see someone come in like an established head
- 53:46coach, bring them in and keep Mike McDaniel as a offensive
- 53:51coordinator. Like I'd have absolutely loved
- 53:54that. And I know that won't work.
- 53:56And I know why you'd never do that.
- 53:58It's it's a weird scenario to be in, but like, I don't know this
- 54:02this year was it needed to happen.
- 54:05We had a strong finish like which was good to see that, you
- 54:08know, strong for the quality of the team.
- 54:11And obviously we've as, as will have been seeing since about the
- 54:15only NFL news has been this week really, we're we're starting to
- 54:21sell house and get rid and chop the dead ward and the biggest
- 54:25name of them. Obviously, I mean, obviously
- 54:26Chubb's been caught, which I'll be honest is frustrating, but
- 54:29also shows, not that he's been caught, but it shows the
- 54:34situation the Dolphins were dealing with last season.
- 54:37We had offers for Chubb before the trade deadline last year and
- 54:40we could have shipped him off, but now we've cut him for
- 54:43absolutely nothing. So, you know, take a sixth round
- 54:46or a fifth round or whatever it is you could get take it because
- 54:48the season was done. So why didn't you do that?
- 54:50It's so stupid. Caught.
- 54:53Him, but the big name obviously is Tyreke, isn't it?
- 54:56Tyreke's gone. It was expected and he he's for
- 55:03him. It's going to be interesting to
- 55:04see what's next for Tyreke. I think it was almost a given
- 55:07that he wasn't going to be here this next season and I think the
- 55:13there weren't. The rumour was he was going to
- 55:15be traded and then obviously he did.
- 55:17His knee, dislocated knee, multiple ligaments, he might not
- 55:20even be fit for the start of next season.
- 55:22It's that significant of an injury is is in his early 30s
- 55:26now as a receiver, as a speedster, It's a knee injury.
- 55:30I think he's still going to be a good pick up for somebody and
- 55:35it. Strikes me like those it strikes
- 55:38like the the the DeAndre Hopkins, you know, when he's in
- 55:40his prime, then just kind of slowed down a lot that went to a
- 55:42team and just became. But I think I think Hills got
- 55:45too much of A personality and too which we need to go to do
- 55:47this Now. I've got a bit of a set, not a
- 55:50sentimental value, but I don't know, a bit of a love hate
- 55:53relationship with with him at the moment.
- 55:54And I know players don't like they don't like this view when
- 55:57it comes down to it. But fantasy football, I've
- 56:00traded for the guy the week of it happening, a trader from the
- 56:03week of it happening. So I want him to come back.
- 56:06I want to come back as a wide receiver when I want to also
- 56:07dominate. But I, yeah, I just don't see
- 56:10it. But on the tube situation and
- 56:12and you get in the offers now, hindsight's a wonderful thing.
- 56:15And at the time, you didn't know where you were going to be.
- 56:18Matt, me and Matt McDonough was your, was your, he was your head
- 56:20coach. He was, you know, he, you were
- 56:24going to get a fight at the end of the season when when this was
- 56:26happening. I think you can take a positive
- 56:29from this. Whereas, yes, you could turn
- 56:33around and go, oh, well, you know, we could, we could have
- 56:35got this for him. So we'll just keep him because
- 56:36he's a good player and people value him.
- 56:38No, he's not right for this team now.
- 56:40And the ownership and the leadership from the top are
- 56:43going, yeah, we had an offer for you the right time on there.
- 56:46We're going to try and get one now off you Pop releasing you
- 56:50like they're good. They're going to be taking some
- 56:52sort of hit, right? They're going to be taking some
- 56:54sort of hit on his cap for his wages for that.
- 56:56Yeah, you know. Yeah, there will be I.
- 56:58Think, I think, I think it's Nope, I think, I think it's, I
- 57:05think it's a positive you could take from it on a if you're
- 57:08looking for one somewhere, I do think there's a positive in
- 57:10there. You could you could take me from
- 57:12a organisation point of view is what I'm trying to get it there.
- 57:16I think they're doing the absolute right thing.
- 57:17Like I'm really excited for next season.
- 57:20Well, no, I'm not really excited for next season at all.
- 57:22Actually. I'm excited for the season after
- 57:24because it's going to be a rough all season.
- 57:27And what appears to be happening and it's, it's the two of
- 57:31contracts that's hanging over it now.
- 57:33And to see what they do with this, that'll be the that's the
- 57:36jigsaw piece that's missing that we need to see where it falls.
- 57:39But they are basically from the look of it saying we're going to
- 57:43take these cap hits now and basically in a position to reset
- 57:48for 2027 and almost have a fresh cap to use.
- 57:51So they've got rid of the big the big contract.
- 57:53Well, you know, they've got rid of Reek, they've got rid of
- 57:55Chubb, you know, a couple of other guys there as well and not
- 58:00significantly as significant on the cap hits.
- 58:04But obviously when Tua, when the decisions made with Tua and you
- 58:08see all sorts of reporting and it's all a load of crap because
- 58:11no one, I mean, people have sources, but who really knows
- 58:13what's going on because you're not going to deal all your
- 58:15cards. There's there's rumours that
- 58:17they are trying to offload him as a trade, but take some of the
- 58:23cap hit to sweeten the deal and things.
- 58:26And I think it'd be interesting if they do cut him.
- 58:30They've got some flexibility depending when they cut to.
- 58:33I think it's a post June 1st cut.
- 58:37I forgot that date, right? They can split the contract
- 58:41across two years now. I think if I'm honest, I'd just,
- 58:44I'd just take the hit this year, right, 2026 off.
- 58:48I know you can never publicly say that and do that as an
- 58:51organisation, but you know, they've got AGM and a head coach
- 58:55who are in lockstep and if the organisation on board with it,
- 58:59Stephen Ross is pretty good for standing by guys.
- 59:01He doesn't fire easily. To be fair, they write 2026 off,
- 59:07take the full hit onto his contract.
- 59:11I know that might not be quite fully possible and they might
- 59:14need to cut some of the guys and it's cracks.
- 59:15It's their jobs, it's their livelihood.
- 59:17But as an organisation do that and then 2027 you start and you
- 59:21hit fresh and like go for it, go for it.
- 59:25Then like all Hog, then what we've been doing for so many
- 59:28years is just patching holes with that's and you need that
- 59:32mix of rookies and vets, but. You know Packers have done it.
- 59:35Well, they've drafted really well.
- 59:37Where do you pick this year? Well, what What you're?
- 59:41Just outside the top. We're just outside the top 10.
- 59:44So realistically, you're not going to get a great QB in this
- 59:46draft anyway. So like you said, do you?
- 59:49No, and I don't think there is one outside of Mendoza.
- 59:52No, no. Do you, do you keep hold of tour
- 59:56for another year under a new head coach?
- 59:57Shall you get on with it? See.
- 1:00:00I don't know. Well.
- 1:00:00This is this is what I've been like playing with in my head.
- 1:00:02I'm like, why, why do we cut him now?
- 1:00:05Because you could still keep him and just see what happens.
- 1:00:09But it's, it's then the the drama, isn't it?
- 1:00:14And it's the politics and it's all that sort of stuff.
- 1:00:16And so like, I don't know, and this might just be my non
- 1:00:21knowledgeable head here, like what benefit do we get out of
- 1:00:24cutting him and taking the full hit on his cap out of just
- 1:00:28keeping him other than. You're paying the same kind.
- 1:00:32Of stuff. Yeah, you're paying the same and
- 1:00:34and I think you, you know, if he sits down with two and goes
- 1:00:38right, you've got one season to kind of show us what you're what
- 1:00:43you're doing. I don't know.
- 1:00:45I don't know. It's for them and I can see
- 1:00:48obviously you said you you guys have been struggling as such
- 1:00:52this year and you've got that kind of offseason kind of locker
- 1:00:55room stuff to to to go to go with with it.
- 1:00:59Who, who in your mind you should kind of wrap up the team
- 1:01:02situation here. We might touch on more teams
- 1:01:05next week because there's a lot of teams to go through.
- 1:01:06There's a lot of talking to go through with it as well.
- 1:01:08But like, who in your head here is one kind of offseason away
- 1:01:19from being like there, if that makes sense?
- 1:01:25Not like super bombs. I'm not talking like Super Bowl,
- 1:01:28but like who's one offseason away from being that contender
- 1:01:33when it comes to the playoffs and pushing a bit for like
- 1:01:36Denver were this year round, if I may say they they are that one
- 1:01:39offseason to make them get to where they were.
- 1:01:43I think there's the team that's always sort of there on the cusp
- 1:01:47and the get there somewhere because they're arguably one of
- 1:01:53the most consistent teams in the league.
- 1:01:54And it's the 49ers for me. They they have some unlucky
- 1:02:00stuff. They have some unlucky like
- 1:02:03injury situations, don't they over the years and they've got
- 1:02:07Shanahan who's he's the coach who's like it's just been out of
- 1:02:13reach that Super Bowl. It's just been out of reach and
- 1:02:15getting it. But he's arguably one of the
- 1:02:17best coaches in the league. He's got his own tree, but he
- 1:02:21doesn't have the Super Bowls, unless I'm completely mistaken
- 1:02:24there. But it's it's the Niners just
- 1:02:30and I don't even I couldn't even sit here and tell you what they
- 1:02:33need because they they seem there.
- 1:02:38But they could just it could be the given year then and they
- 1:02:43make it and they do it and they get over that hump and then they
- 1:02:46bring it in. I have my own thoughts on Purdy.
- 1:02:49I think Purdy's overrated. I think he's fine.
- 1:02:53I think he's he's a solid starting quarterback, but I
- 1:02:57think he's definitely middle of the pack.
- 1:02:58I think he was hyped up something chronic because of the
- 1:03:03success of the ad as Mr Irrelevant, like absolutely
- 1:03:06deserves the credit, but I don't think he's this top tier
- 1:03:10quarterback at all. And I think you hear the media
- 1:03:13starting to come round to that same narrative now.
- 1:03:16Not saying that I'm an Oracle or anything, but you know, and I
- 1:03:21you know what, you know, what worries me actually is someone
- 1:03:23like Tua going to the 49ers and you have someone like Shanahan
- 1:03:29with getting his hands on him and winning the Super Bowl like
- 1:03:34a Sund Arnold's Jets fan sort of scenario, right?
- 1:03:39But I could see it though, honestly, when when there's been
- 1:03:41talks with him, either been cut or traded over this last year or
- 1:03:45so, that's that's the one I always think, God, if you go to
- 1:03:48the Niners and I just feel like someone like him with Shanahan
- 1:03:53and the offence they've got and and the DS solid, like I just
- 1:03:58think, yeah, I think they're they're so close.
- 1:04:02They're so close. But they're just.
- 1:04:04They're almost like the bills of the NFC, like they're so close
- 1:04:07and they're constantly there, but just not quite getting over
- 1:04:09that hurdle. Yeah, I, I, I'm inclined to
- 1:04:13agree with you on that. I've got a the, the Raiders for
- 1:04:17me, I think are an offseason or two to this offseason that
- 1:04:23could, they could go on a one of two ways.
- 1:04:25I know that sounds kind of like cliche with it, but let's say
- 1:04:28they get Mendoza, which they're going to do right and he's
- 1:04:31starting QB and is as good as what it looked like he's in
- 1:04:33college. They've got gently background.
- 1:04:35If they can kind of bring in some decent free agents because
- 1:04:38they've got a a desirable location now, like, you know,
- 1:04:44got new coaching staff coming in.
- 1:04:46They've got the exciting QB look like looking like he's going to
- 1:04:49come in. They've already got some
- 1:04:51established players there. Can they build on that?
- 1:04:53Can they go from that? But the flip side to is
- 1:04:55sometimes too much change is not not a good thing for a team.
- 1:04:59But I think the Raiders out too. I think the Raiders out too far
- 1:05:02away from it, to be fair. I think they just, I think they
- 1:05:04just had, I think this year was a lot of poor coaching.
- 1:05:09I just, I think it wasn't the right scheme and the right style
- 1:05:11of football for what Raiders personality and Raiders players
- 1:05:15are to be fair to. Yeah.
- 1:05:18And I'd agree. I think I'd say they're probably
- 1:05:21more than a season away. I think they've got a few pieces
- 1:05:23they need to do and I think, you know, it's kind of going to be
- 1:05:27like the Bear. I think they've got a potential.
- 1:05:29I don't think they're quite going to reach the potential
- 1:05:31where the Bears did, but I think they've got that potential to
- 1:05:35make a big shift overnight. But then I think year 2 when
- 1:05:38they've got a second year quarterbacks, we know how
- 1:05:41difficult the league is and a rookie quarterback, it's very
- 1:05:45rare they have super, super success.
- 1:05:48But I think 2 years with Mendoza, it's three years with
- 1:05:53Jaunty. It'd be interesting to see what
- 1:05:56happens with the Max Crosby and. You.
- 1:06:02Know a coach who's had a year and then another year after that
- 1:06:05to push it. I think year two of the Kubiak
- 1:06:08experiment for better words would be would be the point for
- 1:06:12Raiders for me and also the next year.
- 1:06:14But I think they've definitely got all the potential in the
- 1:06:16world to to make a leap next year.
- 1:06:19That's it. And looking now again, guys, if
- 1:06:22you are listening to this while without the visuals up, if you
- 1:06:25are safe to do so, you want to watch the visuals, we're on
- 1:06:28screen now. We have a list of the notable
- 1:06:30free agents going into the 2026 season.
- 1:06:32Now, the teams that could kind of look up at who they're going
- 1:06:35to be potentially picking up some really big names on there
- 1:06:39that especially if you don't get the the tags anyway or or re
- 1:06:42sign, for instance, Trey Hendrickson being one of them.
- 1:06:44He could be an absolute storm. I think he leaves and goes
- 1:06:48somewhere else just because the Bengals aren't going to get back
- 1:06:50to the Super Bowl anytime soon. Looking out.
- 1:06:52They're looking and they'll want that success, But there's some
- 1:06:55definite, noticeable notable names on this list and that
- 1:06:59strike out to you and where their landing spots could be.
- 1:07:03Yeah, I think there's a few that that obviously George Pickens is
- 1:07:06a big name. Be interested to see what
- 1:07:09happens there. I thought he had a a solid year
- 1:07:11at Dallas. You know, they could quite
- 1:07:12easily re sign him. Malik Willis is one that stands
- 1:07:16out to me just as a Dolphins fan.
- 1:07:18There's a lot of talk about him coming to the Dolphins.
- 1:07:20He, you know, he had some solid time on the field at the Packers
- 1:07:26and obviously we've got a lot of Packers that have come our way.
- 1:07:28So I could see that happening as well.
- 1:07:32Obviously the biggest name on there probably has to be Kenneth
- 1:07:35Walker, obviously Super Bowl MVP.
- 1:07:39He's now a free agent and the reporting I've seen today is
- 1:07:41that he's not going to be franchise tagged.
- 1:07:43So that'll be really interesting one to see what happens there.
- 1:07:47Like how often is it that you get a Super Bowl MVP then hit
- 1:07:51the free agency market the very next week?
- 1:07:55Oh, well, it's a month and it technically it's March, so
- 1:07:57they're officially free agents. But obviously one not on that
- 1:08:01list is Tyree Kill. I think he's probably one of the
- 1:08:04the more interesting stories, but you've got a few good
- 1:08:06running backs hitting resol. Agency this year.
- 1:08:11Yeah. He's he's exciting and I don't
- 1:08:15think I think his mindsets always been I'm at The Jets.
- 1:08:18So like I think put him in a in a decent team or a good team or,
- 1:08:24you know, a good organisation, should I say.
- 1:08:26I think that I think he could be a genuinely really, really good
- 1:08:31running back and putting him with that team where they did,
- 1:08:34where they need not powerhouse without speeds.
- 1:08:36There's a running back of that, you know, in particular good
- 1:08:39kind of Walker, again, like you said, is a name that I'm
- 1:08:42surprised I'm seeing on there. Etienne as well there, Travis
- 1:08:46Etienne from from the Jags, the running back there some for me,
- 1:08:49there's three decent potentially game team breaking running backs
- 1:08:54if they're in the right scheme. And it's I think I think it
- 1:08:58should be an exciting 1. You got Mike Evans on there as
- 1:09:01well. Buccaneers wide receiver who's
- 1:09:03up until this year, how many 1000 yard seasons did they have
- 1:09:07on the bounce up until this year before getting, you know, having
- 1:09:09a bit of an injury, which medicine can't do anymore, but
- 1:09:13it will. It's, it's just it should, I
- 1:09:18think it should be exciting. It's going to be exciting to.
- 1:09:21See, Mike Evans could be a really interesting signing for
- 1:09:24one of those teams. It's like almost there and just
- 1:09:26needs it. It's like, you know, like the
- 1:09:29DeAndre Hopkins signing that, you know, referred to earlier, I
- 1:09:33think. And like, it's that type of big
- 1:09:36body, big name called the Patriots maker on an offence.
- 1:09:40Yeah, the Patriots need someone like Mike Evans.
- 1:09:42He's a veteran. He's got, he's a veteran that
- 1:09:44can still do it, maybe not to the level that he could do prior
- 1:09:47to his injury a couple of years ago.
- 1:09:49And he's not going to be at the level of like CD lamp, for
- 1:09:51instance, nowhere near that level.
- 1:09:52But he's he's experienced, so he can help the locker room.
- 1:09:56He's tall, he's big, he can throw it up in the air.
- 1:09:58He can catch the pole, the Patriots receivers, the small,
- 1:10:01the nimble, the fast. You we need someone else like
- 1:10:04him on the outside that him and digs together.
- 1:10:07Jesus, that'd be so good to see as we've got a slot on a wide
- 1:10:11out together will be really nice to see.
- 1:10:14But it's where does he go? And yeah, but like I said,
- 1:10:17there's some, there's some big names on there, some big, big
- 1:10:20names on there for me. Yeah.
- 1:10:24Will you? Let's move on, shall we?
- 1:10:27We've got a bit of a chat about the teams.
- 1:10:28We've got a bit of a chat about the players so far for this
- 1:10:31year. I think it's time to move on to
- 1:10:36all the balls. What do you reckon mate?
- 1:10:40Let's do it. Right, All other balls is here,
- 1:10:47right? Do you just want to tell the
- 1:10:48people what all the balls is? I shall.
- 1:10:53So all of the balls is the segment where we discuss other
- 1:10:58sports from around the globe. The irony this week is that
- 1:11:04we're actually gonna discuss the exact same spots that we
- 1:11:07discussed last week. And there's some significant
- 1:11:13happenings in the world of sports at the minute in terms of
- 1:11:16the Winter Olympics are happening and I'm a little bit
- 1:11:19low key obsessed with them at the minute for various reasons
- 1:11:22that we won't discuss. Research in college?
- 1:11:24Nodded his head in the background there.
- 1:11:28But also obviously it was the start this year of the rugby
- 1:11:31league season following on from the Challenge Cup that was
- 1:11:33discussed last week. So we'll touch on that as well.
- 1:11:37But Zach, shall we get into the wonderful, wonderful Winter
- 1:11:42Olympics? Yes, the wonderful Winter
- 1:11:45Olympics, finally here and Team GB.
- 1:11:48This is why he's so excited in it, Brad.
- 1:11:49Because Team GB have finally got gold medals.
- 1:11:53That's for sole reason. Finally got gold medals,
- 1:11:58Individual skeleton, mixed skeleton, skeleton and the team
- 1:12:02snowboard cross taking gold across all three of them.
- 1:12:07Now I saw something online and I don't know if this is true or
- 1:12:12not so I could be talking absolute balls right now, but
- 1:12:16it's not actually a skeleton track made of ice in the UK that
- 1:12:19people can that they can run tests on.
- 1:12:22It's made of concrete in I believe it seemed like Lee or
- 1:12:25somewhere. Again, could be could be major
- 1:12:28balls there, but the closest ones abroad somewhere and
- 1:12:33research college come in and save me clutch here.
- 1:12:34They only practise 2 to 3 hours a year on ice and they've gone.
- 1:12:40I'm bloody one of gold credit credit 2 golds, 2 golds like
- 1:12:45that is like I I admittedly, I haven't watched as much of the
- 1:12:50Olympics as I would have liked it.
- 1:12:51Normally I prefer the Winter Olympics to the normal like
- 1:12:55Summer Olympics and I do. There's just something about it
- 1:12:57I real like, but just this year, my schedule just it just hasn't
- 1:13:01aligned where I've watched a lot of it.
- 1:13:02I've just been trying to keep up where I can go from there.
- 1:13:07So I'm a bit behind on it, but when I saw that we've got some
- 1:13:12goals, it's good to see. It's good to see.
- 1:13:17I'm guessing you've been watching it though.
- 1:13:19Yeah, it's great. Like I saw, I saw Matt Weston, I
- 1:13:22think I'm pretty sure he was our first gold in the individual
- 1:13:26skeleton. And I saw that.
- 1:13:28I didn't watch it live, but I saw it that evening and it was
- 1:13:34just one of those runs where I mean, I know nothing about the
- 1:13:37skeleton. Like I know nothing.
- 1:13:39I'm also like slightly confused by once you've done your run and
- 1:13:42you're on the whatever they call it, the sledge, the sledge,
- 1:13:46whatever. Like what do you actually do
- 1:13:48after that point? Now, I'm sure there is some
- 1:13:50stuff like weight distribution and all that malarkey, but you
- 1:13:54could just you just saw from the get go the way he ran, the way
- 1:13:57he got on it and he was just like, it was just you just
- 1:14:00looked at it and you're like, this is good.
- 1:14:02This, this is this is a solid performance and like he took
- 1:14:07gold, he took gold. He's a former Taekwondo athlete,
- 1:14:13he's a former rugby union player and he took gold from Germany by
- 1:14:19making up a nought .3 second gap researcher.
- 1:14:23Carl's telling us if that's wrong, blame him.
- 1:14:25And it's just absolutely insane and the performance was unreal.
- 1:14:32But then he's like he's doubled it himself by going, you know
- 1:14:35what, I'll go on this mixed, this mixed gender one, and I'll
- 1:14:43take gold again on the mixed colour.
- 1:14:47Unreal. Yeah, unreal.
- 1:14:49There's some sports in the Olympics, whether it's summer or
- 1:14:52winter looking. I just think I want to did this
- 1:14:56get like this? Did this become a sport?
- 1:14:58But it's so exciting seeing, like you say, when you're when
- 1:15:00honestly going down. Obviously it's weight
- 1:15:02distribution, the, the Turley. Like I don't really insult
- 1:15:06people because it's must be a really hard sport to, to take
- 1:15:09part in. But once you're going down,
- 1:15:11you're going down at you and it's really fast.
- 1:15:13I think it's all about the aerodynamics and you start and
- 1:15:15everything. But you know, credit where
- 1:15:16credit's due puts Team GB up to 13 now with the three golds, no
- 1:15:22bronzes, no silvers yet, but three goes I believe as well.
- 1:15:25We've come forth like quite a few times while we've just been
- 1:15:28on that ball line of getting their medal.
- 1:15:29So credit where credit's due. We're we're at that point now
- 1:15:3313th on there. Norway still out in front with
- 1:15:36with 14 medals in total, 14 golds in total, so 31 medals.
- 1:15:43So they're going to take some catching up, but just as from a
- 1:15:46Winter Olympics side of things, from AGB side, getting medals is
- 1:15:51a big thing because we don't have that access to that real
- 1:15:55kind of environment, let's say. Yeah, I mean, it's, it's, it's
- 1:16:00hard, isn't it? And there's I was looking at
- 1:16:02something earlier that the way the medal chart works in the
- 1:16:08Olympics, which I want to actually have a discussion with
- 1:16:10you about in a second. But you know where we're in 13th
- 1:16:15place, but we've only got 3 medals total and all three of
- 1:16:20those are gold. So like you say, we've had a few
- 1:16:22fourth places which has been got in to miss out on the medals.
- 1:16:24We've got no bronze, no silver, 3 golds.
- 1:16:27Obviously Matt taking two of those.
- 1:16:31So obviously nailing his solo run and then making up that gap
- 1:16:37from Tabby's run to take that gold for the mix.
- 1:16:41But then you've got Charlotte Banks and Hugh Nightingale who
- 1:16:44took, if I'm right, I'm sure I saw this from Callum earlier is
- 1:16:49the first gold medal for GB on snow, which is like mega all the
- 1:16:56better that it's snowboarding like, you know, love it.
- 1:17:02But for the fact that we as a country don't have those
- 1:17:05facilities. Like if you look at the top end
- 1:17:06of that chart, you've got Norway, you've got Italy, you've
- 1:17:09got US. All three of those obviously
- 1:17:12have access to that quite easily.
- 1:17:16Netherlands and Germany not so much.
- 1:17:19But right next door they do with Austrian 6, France, Sweden,
- 1:17:23Switzerland, you know, all of those that top sort of 789 teams
- 1:17:28of all the access and where they just, we're just then on the
- 1:17:31outside of that along with Australia, really with, I mean,
- 1:17:36Australia do have snowy mountains to be fair, but just
- 1:17:41outside that without the facilities.
- 1:17:42So to be there, to be competing at that level, like imagine
- 1:17:46running on concrete in the skeleton to then go, you know
- 1:17:49what, we'll do it on ice this time and we'll just smash it and
- 1:17:51hold out. Oh, you know what?
- 1:17:53I'll do it within an 8 again, just for laughs.
- 1:17:55It's just. It is, it is wild, yeah.
- 1:17:59It is wild to think and and it goes to show doesn't it like
- 1:18:04that anything can happen when it comes down to it and put you put
- 1:18:09your mind and solve to it. And I think it's that is it
- 1:18:12perception style things when they when they when the training
- 1:18:15on the concrete or whatever kind of sled it is, I'll slope it is
- 1:18:19at the training and actually before they go onto the ice,
- 1:18:21it's the visualising the ice. Then when you come onto the ice,
- 1:18:25it's not much of A shock to obviously these guys will have
- 1:18:28done it before. So they kind of know what it's
- 1:18:29like. But I don't know what the
- 1:18:31differences are on the tweets that I need to make, but to go
- 1:18:33and practise like 2 to 3 hours a week a year.
- 1:18:36Sorry on ice to then go smash out of gold is phenomenal like
- 1:18:43that is textbook. We're coming here to do a job
- 1:18:46and we'd build we believe it in ourselves, like we're absolutely
- 1:18:49believing in ourselves for us to go out there and and do it.
- 1:18:52And it's that belief that can go and and and help you out on
- 1:18:56that. DC is getting involved medals.
- 1:19:02It's so hard to tell, like it's it's unbelievably difficult to
- 1:19:07get a gold like and I know that's that's obvious to say,
- 1:19:12isn't it? But there's 4th place.
- 1:19:16We've been so close to a good few bronzers and I just don't
- 1:19:22think, I don't know, I think we'll struggle.
- 1:19:24I can't see us continuing to push.
- 1:19:27I can't. That skeleton was like a Oh my
- 1:19:30God moment. And then the snowboarding
- 1:19:33obviously wasn't necessarily expected as far as I'm aware.
- 1:19:36I don't, I love watching the Winter Olympics.
- 1:19:39I don't pretend I can't speak. I don't pretend to be like fully
- 1:19:44in tune and invested in all the lead up to it.
- 1:19:47But I think when you're competing with those nations
- 1:19:52that have got access to the facilities that they do, then
- 1:19:56you're always going to struggle to a point.
- 1:19:58Are you like, we're definitely more of a Summer Olympics
- 1:20:00nation. But I think it's been good.
- 1:20:05It's been definitely interesting.
- 1:20:08I know Callum was digging up some interesting facts earlier
- 1:20:11today, wasn't it? Dirty little dog picking up on
- 1:20:15the facts that the Olympic villages run out of condoms.
- 1:20:19Oh really? Oh wonder I found that out.
- 1:20:21Yeah, Callum was very yeah, he was very invested in that story.
- 1:20:24Was Callum researcher Cal So. But I mean, I get it.
- 1:20:29I get it. You know, you've got to think
- 1:20:31like these are top athletes who are like building up all this
- 1:20:35testosterone and you know, you hear about stuff, don't you, in
- 1:20:39in all sports about not doing things before the big game and
- 1:20:42stuff like that. So, you know, how long have they
- 1:20:45not been doing things? And then you're in this village
- 1:20:47with, you know, bang, average looking men and women and it's.
- 1:20:53Yeah, So what is one of those with this talk, with this
- 1:20:56talking Olympics now? And we're going to reorder
- 1:20:59something a little bit here, but if you don't mind, we're going
- 1:21:01to we're going to just put the next all the ball story on hold
- 1:21:04for a second because Carl with research Carl has actually made
- 1:21:08us a little bit of a a game, let's just say.
- 1:21:11So we have the, the defeat that we've run before, you know the,
- 1:21:13the stats that sound fake where research Carl put 3 stats out
- 1:21:17that all sound fake and one of them is real.
- 1:21:20Well, research called this week has done something a little bit
- 1:21:23different for us based around the Olympics.
- 1:21:26So we're going to do sports that sound fake.
- 1:21:31Now, these are winter Olympic sports or sport, right?
- 1:21:36There's three spots on the screen and I'm going to read
- 1:21:39them out in just a second. And we have to guess which is
- 1:21:42the real or was the real winter Olympic sport.
- 1:21:46So guess the real winter Olympic sport.
- 1:21:48And the three options are dog sledding, snowball fighting, and
- 1:21:52reindeer racing. So this was, as far as I'm
- 1:21:56aware, research guy can correct me if I'm wrong here.
- 1:21:58This was a Olympic sport, no longer an Olympic sport.
- 1:22:01I don't know when it stopped, but one of these 3 was an
- 1:22:06Olympic sport. There's one obvious one to me.
- 1:22:09I don't think it's that. Yeah, I think, I'm guessing
- 1:22:14you're thinking dog sledding. Yes, I don't think it's that
- 1:22:18you. Think of the you think of the
- 1:22:20Huskies and mushy and all that monarchy but like I just can't
- 1:22:25fathom out a snowball fight Sounds just ridiculous like
- 1:22:29unless you like adjudicating it like dodgeball or something.
- 1:22:32That's it. Like reindeer racing is just
- 1:22:38stupid. That's sure.
- 1:22:40That's not. But so for me, reindeer racing
- 1:22:44could be like chariot racing. You know, they had that.
- 1:22:47The chariot racing is big in France, right?
- 1:22:48Where they'll be sat on like the little little cart thing back at
- 1:22:52horses, right? France.
- 1:22:54Yeah, it's big in France's chariot racing.
- 1:22:56Like it's like you're like Speedway circuits in the UK and
- 1:22:59the motorbikes, just like the ovals chariot race is big in
- 1:23:02France where they just sit on like the like this like horse
- 1:23:05racing. Not Greece.
- 1:23:08No, no, in France, Like I don't condone gambling, but when I've
- 1:23:13had where I've been looking on Sky Bet for something to do when
- 1:23:17I've got like $0.03 in my camera.
- 1:23:18Get on this please. Please get on this.
- 1:23:20This sounds ludicrous. Yeah, it is.
- 1:23:24Chariot racing is big in France, right?
- 1:23:26But anyway I. Triumph on the roundabout in
- 1:23:31Paris. It's usually it's usually like
- 1:23:33at all weather like like a sandy kind of thing and the car the
- 1:23:37car Sprint either the car gallop jet racing in France is
- 1:23:43primarily features a high octane live.
- 1:23:45He's just played. Just put a little Google there
- 1:23:48for us. But yeah, sorry, it's it's
- 1:23:50broke, I mean. I would have just thought like
- 1:23:52Greece or like Italy, like Rome and stuff like that.
- 1:23:56Like, Oh my. That's so.
- 1:23:59Stupid. But that's what for me, what
- 1:24:02could have been another red, the reindeer racing side of things.
- 1:24:05But I actually think the dodgeball you nailed on the head
- 1:24:09there for me, snowball fighting dodgeball could be the one, you
- 1:24:14know? I think I'm going to go, I'm
- 1:24:16just going to go with the obvious because why wouldn't it
- 1:24:19be dog sledding? Why it's got to be dog sledding,
- 1:24:24Cal, can you just start typing that answer in the real in the
- 1:24:28in the? So you're going dog sledding?
- 1:24:31I'm going snowball fighting researcher Cal.
- 1:24:34What is the answer? And the answer is just take
- 1:24:39typing. It's a long one.
- 1:24:41Great for an audio here Cal just the answer would be great.
- 1:24:45Yeah, it is dog sledding. It was in the 1932 Games.
- 1:24:51I thought it was just too obvious, but hey, look, well
- 1:24:54done. So the real Olympic sport there
- 1:24:56was the dog sledding. So there are three days.
- 1:25:00So there we go We'll keep you up to date with the Olympics as and
- 1:25:04when we can do when we're when we're around, hopefully.
- 1:25:07Sure, I'll try and watch some more so I can sound a bit more
- 1:25:10knowledgeable when it comes down to it, but we'll we'll keep your
- 1:25:13data without that. Now moving on to star #2 which
- 1:25:18is our all the balls #2 but I think, but I want to throw a bit
- 1:25:22of a suggestion because the season started again and we're
- 1:25:25going to be talking rugby league a little bit more because we're
- 1:25:27both fans of it. I think we make it its own
- 1:25:30little section. I think for those that know, I
- 1:25:34think we can't speak. I think the rugby league
- 1:25:38section, the rugby league section is here and and for
- 1:25:42sports fans in the UK, especially the north of England,
- 1:25:45rugby league is in as blood. If you don't know what rugby
- 1:25:48league is and you've never, never seen it, I, I beg you go
- 1:25:52watch it because it's a phenomenal, absolutely great
- 1:25:55sport. We spoke about it last week, but
- 1:25:57the weekend this weekend just gone kicked off the season and
- 1:26:01let me tell you now there was some shocking results.
- 1:26:05And by shocking, I mean good shocking results this weekend
- 1:26:10when it came down to the scores and the big, big one for me was
- 1:26:16the York Hulke R score, the drop goal to win it.
- 1:26:20Paul McShane get a man at match. Are we are we back in like 2021
- 1:26:25or whatever? It was like when we were at cast
- 1:26:28like, wow, what a game. That what I in fact, I made the,
- 1:26:33I turned it off when it was like, well, it's 16-6 or
- 1:26:36something with, with 20 minutes to go.
- 1:26:38And I was like, OK, I've won this.
- 1:26:41I won it off for time being. And then I, I looked and I
- 1:26:45opened my flash cards up on my phone and it was 18 and I'm
- 1:26:48like, Nah, so I'm running back and I turned it back on TV.
- 1:26:51What an ending. What a game as well.
- 1:26:55But it was, yeah, I mean, it was brilliant.
- 1:26:57Like I think it's, it's interesting because obviously
- 1:27:01Paul McShane was a Castleford for a good while.
- 1:27:04So listeners and and people who who know us will know a
- 1:27:07Castleford fans. But like, it's do you think when
- 1:27:14he went to York, he ever thought it'd be them playing in Super
- 1:27:17League again? And then he's in Super League
- 1:27:20winning the game, you know, man of the match against the Super
- 1:27:24League champions Hall KR, who were about to play in Las Vegas
- 1:27:27in the the World Club Challenge game.
- 1:27:29And I thought, you know what, I just thought the weekend as a
- 1:27:32whole was actually like a really good public, sort of like
- 1:27:39showing of what rugby league is. So we've spoke about it last
- 1:27:43week about how much of an electric sport it can be.
- 1:27:45But when you look at the scores, there's no game that was more
- 1:27:51than I think 16 points difference I think was the
- 1:27:54biggest difference. I'm just looking and that was
- 1:27:58between Catalans and Huddersfield, who Huddersfield
- 1:28:00were down in the doldrums last year outside of Salford.
- 1:28:04But you had some really competitive games like York
- 1:28:08beating Hulke Hour was huge, probably obviously the hugest
- 1:28:10story of the weekend. But not only that, you also had
- 1:28:13to lose who are new in the in the the league beating Wakefield
- 1:28:18and you didn't have Bradford getting the victory, but they
- 1:28:24did come close to seven points in it.
- 1:28:26You know, which for the fact that the seven points shows that
- 1:28:30Hull FC felt concerned about it. So if you don't know rugby
- 1:28:34league, it's it's all even numbers.
- 1:28:36Basically it's four points or two points for whatever.
- 1:28:39You know, your tries and your kicks.
- 1:28:41It's a drop goal. It's one point.
- 1:28:42So if you've got an odd number in there, you know, someone's
- 1:28:44put a drop goal over for some strange reason because they were
- 1:28:47worried and like, you know, 3 brand new teams in Super League,
- 1:28:51two of the three winning, the other team coming close to
- 1:28:54giving him a gate, you know, getting that victory.
- 1:28:58I think it's, it's just a really good, a really good showing for
- 1:29:02rugby league and what the sport is.
- 1:29:04It's really exciting. I think you're best it could
- 1:29:07have been in terms of like exciting games and the scores
- 1:29:10themselves were all quite close. And I mean the big the biggest
- 1:29:13shock for me were the warrant in Saint Alan's score being 2414.
- 1:29:16The the difference in that more than anything else.
- 1:29:18I thought that would be more of a tighter game, more of 14, all
- 1:29:21kind of game. Well, maybe 1514 with the drop
- 1:29:23goal. Now I went to the cast game at
- 1:29:25the weekend I were looking to go and I watched the game live as
- 1:29:30such and it were a 2616 game from a spectator watching.
- 1:29:35Obviously I'm a biassed cast fan and I always will be in I
- 1:29:39believe like an amber. But they play that first half
- 1:29:42they played unreal. It felt like we had so many
- 1:29:45defensive stops within our own half, within our own quarter at
- 1:29:48one point. And we we did we did the typical
- 1:29:52casting, which better sells. At one point we were just doing
- 1:29:54stupid mistakes that gave the wig and the ball back.
- 1:29:56And there's only so many times in rugby league, you know, when
- 1:29:59I was predominantly an American football podcast, but every
- 1:30:03league you don't have an offence and a defence that coming off
- 1:30:05the field. You have one team that's on the
- 1:30:06field. And when you're defending,
- 1:30:09defending, defending, defending, defending, defending against
- 1:30:11some of these units that are the the forwards, for instance, that
- 1:30:15are running, that are running that ball, running that, but it
- 1:30:17takes it out of you. So then your offensive drives,
- 1:30:19you near, you're attacking sets, you've got no, you've got no gas
- 1:30:23in the tank to have these exciting plays.
- 1:30:25So it would just one-dimensional, here's the ball
- 1:30:28inside ball, we've run it forward, inside ball and we just
- 1:30:30couldn't get anything going. But we saw a lot of, I saw a lot
- 1:30:34of promise in that game. I really did.
- 1:30:38I saw a lot of promise in that game you had.
- 1:30:41A brand new team, literally a brand new team.
- 1:30:45You know, almost the entire starting line that in starting
- 1:30:48line up, sorry, was brand new. There's a few players in there
- 1:30:52that have been with us before and but all of them together
- 1:30:58playing was really promising. First start, I think it was over
- 1:31:0310 minutes. They defended their 20 and 10
- 1:31:08metre line and and they were outstanding that first half and
- 1:31:12it shows organisation. I'm really excited as a cast fan
- 1:31:15for this season. Ryan Carl looks solid coach like
- 1:31:18you've said, a lot of the media stuff, he looks solid and to go
- 1:31:21against Wigan who were top 123 team year on year and a big
- 1:31:27team, you know a hard hitting team, they they did themselves
- 1:31:32proud last year. That would have been a 60 plus
- 1:31:35something score. But it's, it's not all sunshine
- 1:31:39rainbows, mate. I mean, we lost, which is not
- 1:31:41great, but we also took a major, major loss in terms of a player
- 1:31:46personnel on that day as well. Blake Taffy, I believe his
- 1:31:49surname is pronounced or Taff as it has been pronounced by the
- 1:31:54the compare the announced, shall I say, took a ACL injury, which
- 1:31:59puts him out for the rest of the year.
- 1:32:01And I was there. I watched the game live and me
- 1:32:04and Brad were speaking prior to the podcast starting and I
- 1:32:06didn't even see it happen live. And the guy continued to play
- 1:32:10throughout the entire throughout the rest of the game.
- 1:32:13Sorry of a but now being ruled out for the rest of the season
- 1:32:17with an ACLT And he's one of our new recruits, one of our more
- 1:32:20exciting new recruits as well. A little bit good on that.
- 1:32:24I'm not going to lie to you. It's a bit of a kicking teeth
- 1:32:27isn't it really, from a calf point of view?
- 1:32:29It's a big loss. I was I was texting another
- 1:32:31friend who wasn't at the game. So we were texting quite a bit
- 1:32:36watching it on TV and I was saying, you know, our 167 spine
- 1:32:41looks really solid. Say it was the first time the
- 1:32:43three of them have played together.
- 1:32:44He searched you full back, you half back in your scrum half.
- 1:32:47So they're basically the guys for those that don't follow
- 1:32:49sport that that control the team really and dictate as a as a
- 1:32:56threesome. They're almost like the
- 1:32:57quarterback, but of the team. They dictate how what's
- 1:33:00happening. They link up and they set the
- 1:33:02players up and stuff like that. Obviously you won you full back
- 1:33:05controls, the defensive side of things.
- 1:33:09And I thought they looked really, really promising for the
- 1:33:11first game. I was I was really excited.
- 1:33:13And now 1/3 of that spine's gone.
- 1:33:15So it'd be interesting to see what happens here.
- 1:33:19You know, there's other peak, other players come through but.
- 1:33:23Rooney, I think Rooney will step up and take that, take that slot
- 1:33:26and hopefully progress there, but only time will tell them.
- 1:33:30And like I say, going forward, I think we're going to focus a
- 1:33:32little bit more on the rugby league side of things week in,
- 1:33:34week out. Like that is probably not as in
- 1:33:36depth as what we do with the NFL.
- 1:33:37But you guys let us know what you want to hear as well.
- 1:33:39By the way, we get into the offseason with the NFL now.
- 1:33:42What do you want to hear when it comes down to the pods
- 1:33:44themselves? Is there anything in particular
- 1:33:45you want us to give really average takes on?
- 1:33:48Let us know in the comments below.
- 1:33:49Please feel free to do so. But yeah, that's a little touch
- 1:33:53upon the opening weekend for the rugby league and I must admit
- 1:33:57I'm excited for this week. Thursday, Friday, Saturday,
- 1:33:59Sunday, all for the game. So I'm excited to go from there.
- 1:34:03Now Brad, before we wrap up, we have our most consistent feature
- 1:34:09on the pod and that is a Carl's Conundrum.
- 1:34:13OK, so Carl's conundrum last week was a tough one, and I've
- 1:34:19got a little bone to pick because this slide that is now
- 1:34:22appearing on the screen is different to the one that I read
- 1:34:26out last week. Let's see if we can spot the
- 1:34:29difference here. Which four players are tied?
- 1:34:32I'll repeat that. Which four players are tied?
- 1:34:35How many most signing? Which four players are tied for
- 1:34:40the for the most sacks in a single Super Bowl game?
- 1:34:44Now, if I'm correct, the question wasn't which far
- 1:34:47players, Brad, It wasn't. Wasn't Mr Researcher Carl
- 1:34:53correct? Yeah.
- 1:34:56Oh, yeah, We do the pod again. This is the third week on the
- 1:35:01bounces. We're going to start calling him
- 1:35:03Apprentice Carl. I think he's going to be called
- 1:35:06Apprentice Carl. Jeez, killing us, Carl.
- 1:35:09You're killing us. Anyway.
- 1:35:10Which four players are tied for the most sacked in the Super
- 1:35:13Bowl season? Actually in a Super Bowl, single
- 1:35:16Super Bowl, and it was Reggie White, Darnell Docket, Coney
- 1:35:20Ely, and Grady Janet. So if you got them, well done.
- 1:35:24If you took part, thank you very much.
- 1:35:26And we're going to get into the next week's, next week's Carl's
- 1:35:30Conundrum. And please feel free to take
- 1:35:32part in this. You can take part by heading
- 1:35:34over to any of our socials at ABNF Pod, wherever you go on
- 1:35:39your social media. I got it right this time.
- 1:35:42And as well, if you're listening to this on YouTube or Spotify
- 1:35:45with the video, you can offer a comment there and let us know
- 1:35:47what you think, right? Carl's Conundrum for next week
- 1:35:52In terms of average value, which NFL player signed the biggest
- 1:35:57free agent contract in NFL history?
- 1:36:01So in terms of average, sorry. In terms of average annual
- 1:36:04value? So in terms of average annual
- 1:36:08value, which NFL player signed the biggest free agent contract
- 1:36:13in the NFL history? I like a bunch of doc reading
- 1:36:18that out. I ain't got a clue.
- 1:36:20Yeah, you did. You did, babe.
- 1:36:21But it's. All good.
- 1:36:22Yeah, there's a lot of words. There's a lot of words there.
- 1:36:26So anyway, guys, feel free to take part in that.
- 1:36:28Let us know what you think with it, and that'd be fantastic to
- 1:36:31do So wow, it's been a long one. I'm not going to lie.
- 1:36:34If you're still here. Thank you by the way.
- 1:36:37Thank you. We're going to wrap up now.
- 1:36:40So if you're if you're listening, go watch it.
- 1:36:43If you're watching, go listen as well.
- 1:36:45Wherever you're listening, wherever you're watching, like
- 1:36:47subscribe, follow, comment, share, tell your friends and get
- 1:36:51involved. Brad, anything from you?
- 1:36:54No, it's been a pleasure. I'm looking forward to the off
- 1:36:56season. It'll be an interesting, we've
- 1:36:58got some exciting things planned.
- 1:36:59So stick around and and thank you as ever for tuning in and
- 1:37:03let us know what you think. Perfect.
- 1:37:07Thank you very much. Good night.
- 1:37:08God bless and we'll see you later.
- 1:37:32Music.
