- 0:24to lead us through today's journey, here is your
- 0:28host. Pastor David. Welcome to the Voices of
- 0:31Life, a ministry of the Church for Life. I'm
- 0:34Pastor Dave. Today's Did You Know takes us to
- 0:37August 12th, a date where two very different
- 0:42lives tell one powerful story. On one side, General
- 0:46George Washington standing at the edge of crisis
- 0:49that threatened the survival of the Continental
- 0:51Army. On the other, Jane Francis DeChantel a
- 0:56woman of deep Christian faith who carried grief,
- 1:00loss, and responsibility with extraordinary perseverance.
- 1:05Two stories, two worlds, one shared truth. Faithfulness
- 1:11matters even when victory is uncertain. Let's
- 1:15explore what happened and why it is still speaking
- 1:18to us today. On August 12, 1776, George Washington
- 1:23wrote a now preserved letter to Major General
- 1:26Charles Lee from his headquarters in New York.
- 1:29In that letter, Washington revealed the full
- 1:32weight of the crisis he was facing. He warned
- 1:36that British could soon outnumber the Continental
- 1:39Army by thousands. He reported that his own troops
- 1:42were very sickly, and he feared the enemy might
- 1:46cut New York off from its waters and land communications.
- 1:50The British force could concentrate more men
- 1:53at a single point than the Americans could, he
- 1:55wrote. Washington wasn't imagining a distant
- 1:59threat. The invasion was imminent. His army was
- 2:02under 20 ,000 men, and only about 10 ,500 were
- 2:06fit for duty. Disease, especially smallpox, was
- 2:11ravaging the ranks. Desertion was rising. Supplies
- 2:15were thin. Militia reinforcements might not arrive
- 2:19in time. He says, and I quote, my army is very
- 2:24sickly. And Washington just had to make that
- 2:27admission. Yet, even in this moment, Washington
- 2:31told Lee something remarkable. Victory was not
- 2:35within human control, but Americans could strive
- 2:40to deserve it. Within 10 days, the British would
- 2:44land on Long Island. Within 15, the Continental
- 2:46Army would suffer a major defeat. And yet, Washington
- 2:51would preserve the army, retreat through New
- 2:53Jersey, and keep the revolution alive. His August
- 2:5712th letter stands as a snapshot of leadership
- 3:01under crushing pressure. August 12th is also
- 3:04an optional memorial of St. Jane Frances de Chantal
- 3:09in the modern Roman Catholic calendar. Born in
- 3:131572, Jane Frances lived a life marked by profound
- 3:17hardship. She lost her mother early. She married
- 3:21young. She buried children. And after only seven
- 3:25years of marriage, her husband was killed in
- 3:28a hunting accident. Her grief was deep, but her
- 3:32faith was deeper. She devoted herself to raising
- 3:36her family, serving the poor, and caring for
- 3:39the sick. Later, through her friendship with
- 3:43Frances DeSales, she co -founded The Order of
- 3:47the Visitation of Holy Mary in 1610. A community
- 3:51known for its accessibility, spirituality, and
- 3:55its commitment to visiting and caring for the
- 3:59sick and poor. Wife, mother, widow, servant of
- 4:04others. Her life is not a call to veneration
- 4:09for a non -denominational audience. But it is
- 4:13a powerful Christian example. of perseverance,
- 4:17compassion, and service. So what makes August
- 4:2112th so striking? On the same date in history,
- 4:24Washington faced overwhelming military odds,
- 4:27sickness, desertion, shortages, and a looming
- 4:30invasion. Jane Francis faced overwhelming personal
- 4:34loss, widowhood, grief, and the responsibility
- 4:38of raising children alone. Both continued forward.
- 4:41Both served others. Both... remained faithful
- 4:45when victory was uncertain. Their stories remind
- 4:48us of a biblical truth. Perseverance does not
- 4:53mean pretending adversity isn't real. Perseverance
- 4:57means doing what is right despite the adversity.
- 5:01James 1 verses 2 through 4 says perseverance
- 5:06produces maturity. Galatians 5 verse 13 says,
- 5:12serve one another in love. And Romans 5, verses
- 5:163 through 5, says, suffering produces perseverance,
- 5:21character, and hope. John 3, verse 18, love in
- 5:27deed and truth. Perseverance through adversity,
- 5:32faithfulness when victory is uncertain. Washington
- 5:35could not guarantee victory. Jane Francis could
- 5:38not erase her grief. but both chose faithfulness.
- 5:42And that is the heart of today's Did You Know?
- 5:46A reminder that in our own battles, our own losses,
- 5:50our own uncertainties, faithfulness is still
- 5:53possible and still powerful. Thank you for joining
- 5:57me today on Voices of Life. As we look back at
- 6:00August 12th, Washington reminds us that courage
- 6:02is often quiet, steady, and carried out in the
- 6:05face of overwhelming odds. Jane Francis DeChantel
- 6:08reminds us that faithfulness can rise from seasons
- 6:12of grief and loss and become a blessing to others.
- 6:15Both lives point us to the simple truth. Perseverance
- 6:20is not pretending adversity isn't real. Perseverance
- 6:24is choosing to do what is right in the middle
- 6:27of it. If today's episode encouraged you, share
- 6:30it with someone who needs strength for their
- 6:32own journey. Until next time, stay faithful,
