- 0:00There are only two places in the world, the path of the gospel of
- 0:04Jesus Christ and everywhere else.
- 0:08One common belief is all roads lead to heaven is a prevalent
- 0:14belief that has done immense harm to mankind throughout time.
- 0:19It is as old as the world Nihor falsely taught all mankind
- 0:25should be saved at the last day. There shall be many who shall
- 0:29say they do this or do that, and it mattereth not.
- 0:33But woe unto such, for they are in the gall of bitterness.
- 0:38You're either on the path or you're not.
- 0:41If not, get on it. If you're on it, stay the
- 0:47course. Stay on it and you will make it.
- 1:10Where are you? That is the question for this
- 1:15episode. You can't get to where you want
- 1:19to go without first knowing where you are and then plot the
- 1:23chorus in between. In past episodes, we explored
- 1:28some of the many dimensions of who you are, including whether
- 1:32you are good enough. I suggested The answer to that
- 1:36question depends in part on where you are.
- 1:42Hello, my name is Larry Corbridge and this is episode 20
- 1:47of the Stand Forever series. So again, where are you?
- 2:00The answer to this question is, I think a lot easier than who
- 2:05you are. There are only two places in the
- 2:10world, the path of the gospel of Jesus Christ, and everywhere
- 2:17else you're either on the path or you're not.
- 2:24The question should be, are you on the path?
- 2:28It doesn't matter so much where you are on the path.
- 2:32If you are on it and moving forward, that's the question.
- 2:37If you are, then you are good enough despite your weaknesses,
- 2:42despite your mistakes and imperfections.
- 2:46It's really that simple. Having taken your bearings as to
- 2:57where you want to go again point B and where you are point A, you
- 3:03would think to just simply draw a straight line between the two
- 3:07and that would be your course. That may or may not work here
- 3:13depending on where you are. The problem is not all courses
- 3:20lead to point B any more than all roads lead to heaven.
- 3:26Life is about getting, getting to the end, getting to the
- 3:29destination, reunion with God, receiving the gift of God's Son,
- 3:35God's Spirit and God's life and and helping others do that very
- 3:40same thing. More concisely, it is to partake
- 3:45of the fruit of the tree of life and help others do the same.
- 3:49That's the destination. That's point B.
- 3:53There is only one course, one path that leads to that
- 4:00destination. If you are already on that
- 4:04course, then you can draw a straight line to the
- 4:08destination. But if not, you need to draw a
- 4:13straight line to that course, to that path, and then turn right
- 4:18toward the destination. You are either on the course or
- 4:23you're not. If you're not, go there.
- 4:28In Lehigh's description of the of the vision of the Tree of
- 4:32Life, he said he saw multitudes pressing forward on the path
- 4:38that led to the Tree of Life. That's the straight line.
- 4:42But he also said he saw numberless concourses of people,
- 4:47many of whom were pressing forward that they might obtain
- 4:51the path which led into the tree by which I stood.
- 4:55He said you have to get to the path first, the true course, and
- 5:03then just stay on it to get to the tree of life.
- 5:08This method of navigation is counter to the intuition to draw
- 5:13a straight line to the destination from your location,
- 5:16wherever you may be. But it is necessary because not
- 5:20all courses converge on the same destination, and the course is
- 5:25also, in a way, partially the destination.
- 5:36One common belief is all roads do lead to heaven, every church
- 5:44is good, and we'll all be saved in the end.
- 5:46Or so people say and think. You may have even thought.
- 5:51I really don't know that much about other faiths.
- 5:55There are many people of other faiths that seem to be sincere
- 5:59and convinced that they have the truth.
- 6:02All religions teach people to be good, and isn't that what we're
- 6:07all trying to do anyway? Become good people?
- 6:10So maybe that is all God asks of us.
- 6:13We are essentially striving toward the same thing.
- 6:18It's a very common thought, but the belief that all churches
- 6:25lead to heaven, that all religions teach people to be
- 6:28good, and in the end that is all God wants.
- 6:31The belief that churches, one church is no better than any
- 6:35other, just different, that all paths will converge and one is
- 6:40quite as good as another, is a prevalent belief that has done
- 6:45immense harm to mankind throughout time.
- 6:49It is as old as the world, Nihor falsely taught All mankind
- 6:57should be saved at the last day, and that they need not fear nor
- 7:02tremble, but that they might lift up their heads and rejoice.
- 7:06For the Lord had created all men, he said, and had also
- 7:10redeemed all men, and in the end all men should have eternal
- 7:14life, the Scripture goes on to say.
- 7:18And it came to pass that he did teach these things so much that
- 7:23many did believe on his words, Even so many that they began to
- 7:27support him and give him money, that he is, as I said in the
- 7:31last episode, what I call the feel good gospel.
- 7:36Korahor and Sherem taught similar nonsense, also deceiving
- 7:41many. Meron, I saw our day and he said
- 7:45this. There shall be many who shall
- 7:49say, Do this or do that, and it mattereth not, for the Lord will
- 7:55uphold such at the last day. But continuing on, he said, But
- 8:01woe unto such, for they are in the gall of bitterness and in
- 8:06the bonds of iniquity. Nephi, in a very similar way
- 8:12also saw our day and said really the same thing, saying, Yeah,
- 8:18and there shall be many which shall say, eat, drink and be
- 8:21merry, for tomorrow we die, and it shall be well with us.
- 8:25And there shall also be many which shall say, eat, drink, and
- 8:28be merry. Nevertheless, fear God, He will
- 8:31justify in committing a little sin.
- 8:35Yeah, lie a little, take advantage of one because of 1's
- 8:38words. Dig a pitch for thy neighbor.
- 8:40There's no harm in this, and do all these things, for tomorrow
- 8:45we die, and if it so be that we are guilty, God will beat us
- 8:48with a few stripes, and at last we should be saved in the
- 8:52Kingdom of God. Yeah, and there shall be many
- 8:56which shall teach. He said after this manner false
- 9:00and vain and foolish doctrines, and shall be puffed up in their
- 9:08hearts, and shall seek deep to hide their counsels from the
- 9:12Lord, and their works shall be in the dark, in the blood of the
- 9:17Saints. He said, shall cry from the
- 9:19ground against them. Yeah, they have all gone out of
- 9:24the way. They have become corrupted
- 9:30again. The blood of the Saints shall
- 9:33cry from the ground against them.
- 9:38Imagine the anguish of those Saints who sacrificed all they
- 9:44had, some their very lives for the truths of the restored
- 9:49Gospel. When they see the apathy,
- 9:53mediocrity, confusion and deceit created by this singular belief,
- 10:00surely they would cry out in anguish that their blood was
- 10:04shed for not because people are blinded by such fools, false and
- 10:10vain and foolish doctrines. How can everyone be right when
- 10:18there are so many divergent teachings?
- 10:22That is what the young Joseph asked himself.
- 10:25He said My mind at times was greatly excited, the cry and
- 10:30tumult were so great and incessant.
- 10:34The Presbyterians were most decided against the Baptists and
- 10:38the Methodists, and used all powers of both reason and
- 10:43sophistry to prove their errors, or at least to make the people
- 10:47think they were in air. On the other hand, the Baptists
- 10:51and the Methodists in their turn, were equally zealous in
- 10:54endeavoring to establish their own tenants, and disprove all
- 10:59others. In the midst of this war of
- 11:02words and tumult of opinions, I often said to myself, What is to
- 11:08be done? Who of all these parties are
- 11:11right, or are they all wrong together?
- 11:16If any one of them be right, which is it, and how?
- 11:20How shall I know it? While I was laboring, Joseph
- 11:25said, Under the extreme difficulties caused by the
- 11:28contest of these parties of religionists, I was one day
- 11:33reading the Epistle of James, the 1st chapter and 5th verse,
- 11:37which reads. If any of you lack wisdom, let
- 11:42him ask of God that giveth to all men liberally and uprighteth
- 11:47not, and it shall be given Him. Obviously all churches cannot be
- 11:55true because although there is some common ground among them,
- 11:59they differ greatly in fundamental doctrine.
- 12:02The only other conclusion is no church is the true church, which
- 12:07means they are all in air. God created all of this, the
- 12:12cosmos, the universe, our solar system, the earth, and every
- 12:15form of life just to stick us here and let us muddle through.
- 12:21How much sense does that make? Why would he do that?
- 12:26Why create this world for us and then leave us in confusion to
- 12:30stumble along? Why would He not show us the way
- 12:35and then allow us to choose if God wants us to return to His
- 12:40presence, If He loves us and wants us to succeed in this
- 12:45life, then would He not make the way clear from the beginning?
- 12:52Yes, yes, yes He would, and He has since the beginning.
- 13:01He has revealed through prophets the way to return to Him.
- 13:06It is simple. Everyone is capable of
- 13:10understanding, choosing and following even the least and the
- 13:15weakest can can understand the truth and follow Him.
- 13:20The gospel is clear and available to everyone.
- 13:24In fact, everyone who has not had an opportunity to know and
- 13:29accept will have that opportunity.
- 13:34We believe that through the atonement of Christ, literally
- 13:40all mankind, every last one may be saved by obedience to the
- 13:48laws and ordinances of the gospel.
- 13:52We are the only ones that believe that no one is excluded.
- 14:00As Nephi said, he invited them all to come unto him and partake
- 14:08of his goodness, and he denieth none that come unto him.
- 14:14Black and white, bond and free, male and female, all are alike
- 14:21unto God. That, of course, is one of the
- 14:26reasons for temples, and it is why so many people work so hard
- 14:32at genealogical research. They're not just interested in
- 14:36who their ancestors are, they are working for the salvation of
- 14:42all mankind on both sides of the veil.
- 14:49There is no religion that includes everyone except His
- 14:53Church, by which the Lord does and has provided a way for all.
- 15:00But we must choose. It won't work otherwise.
- 15:05We must get up, walk through the gate, get on the path, and then
- 15:10stay the course. Life and judgment will.
- 15:17In terms of final judgment, will not be a process of God only
- 15:22weighing all the good that someone does against all the
- 15:26bad. And if the balances tip in one's
- 15:29favor, grant him entrance. No unclean thing can dwell on
- 15:35the presence of God. Can't happen, can't be done.
- 15:40It is not just a matter of living a good life.
- 15:43Whatever belief system one may have, there is a glorious
- 15:48Kingdom for those who think and live that way.
- 15:52There are decent, respectable, humble, honorable people and
- 15:56many churches, Christian and otherwise.
- 15:59There are Latter Day Saints who do not keep their covenants but
- 16:02essentially live a good life. There is a place for those who
- 16:07live a good life but are not valiant in the testimony of
- 16:11Jesus Christ. It is not so much a Kingdom of
- 16:15punishment for their shortfall. Rather, it is a Kingdom of
- 16:19glory, commensurate to their faithfulness, equal to their
- 16:24state of preparation and being. They will receive the light and
- 16:30glory to which they are entitled in a terrestrial existence,
- 16:34which will be glorious, but not a fullness of joy and glory.
- 16:39They will not realize the full measure of their potential, not
- 16:43because they can't, but because they choose not to.
- 16:49They will not return to the presence of God the Father,
- 16:52which is the essential problem in life.
- 16:58Elder Boyd K Packer said this. Good conduct without the
- 17:03ordinances of the gospel will neither redeem nor exalt
- 17:07mankind. Covenants and the ordinances are
- 17:12essential. We are required to teach the
- 17:16doctrines, even the unpopular ones.
- 17:20Yield on this doctrine and you cannot justify the restoration.
- 17:28The doctrine is true, it is logical, and the opposite is
- 17:33not. A few weeks ago I was returning
- 17:37from the East with President Hinckley.
- 17:39We conversed with a passenger who said something to the effect
- 17:42that all churches lead to heaven.
- 17:47How often have you heard that the parallel path to heaven
- 17:52philosophy. They claim one church is not
- 17:55really better than another, just different.
- 17:58Eventually the paths will converge. 1 is therefore quite
- 18:02as safe in any church as in any other.
- 18:07While this seems to be very generous, it just cannot be
- 18:10true. I find it so interesting that
- 18:14those who condemn us for following the philosophy we do
- 18:18reject the parallel path philosophy themselves when it
- 18:22comes to non Christian religions.
- 18:25For if they do not, they have no reason to accept the Lord as our
- 18:30Redeemer, or regard the atonement as essential.
- 18:35And what could they do with his statement that he that believeth
- 18:40in his baptized shall be saved, and he that believeth not shall
- 18:44be damned? While the converging path idea
- 18:49is very appealing, it really is not reasonable.
- 18:54Suppose schools were operated on that philosophy, with each
- 18:58discipline a separate path leading to the same diploma.
- 19:03No matter whether you study or not, pass the tests or not, all
- 19:08would be given the same diploma, the one of their choice.
- 19:12Without qualifying, one could choose the diploma of an
- 19:16attorney, an engineer, a medical doctor.
- 19:21Surely you would not submit yourselves to surgery under the
- 19:23hands of a graduate of a school of that kind.
- 19:28But it does not work that way. It cannot work that way, not in
- 19:32education, not in spiritual matters.
- 19:36There are essential ordinances, just as there are required
- 19:40courses. There are prescribed standards
- 19:43of worthiness. If we resist them, avoid them,
- 19:48or fail them, we will not enter in with those who complete the
- 19:53course. Do you realize that the notion
- 19:58that all churches are equal presupposes that the true Church
- 20:03of Jesus Christ actually does not exist anywhere?
- 20:09Now, others may insist that this is not the true church, that is
- 20:14their privilege. But to claim that it does not
- 20:17exist anywhere. That it does not even need to
- 20:20exist is to deny the Scriptures the New Testament teaches of 1
- 20:26Lord, 1 faith, 1 baptism, and speaks of all coming in the
- 20:33unity of the faith, and of a restitution of all things which
- 20:37God has spoken by the mouth of His holy prophets since the
- 20:41world began. We did not invent the doctrine
- 20:47of the only true church. It came from the Lord.
- 20:51Whatever perception others have of us, however presumptuous we
- 20:56appear to be, whatever criticism is directed to us, we must teach
- 21:02it to all who will listen. We do not claim that others have
- 21:08no truth. The Lord described them as
- 21:11having a form of godliness. Converts to the Church may bring
- 21:16with them all of the truth they possess and have it added upon.
- 21:29In addition to the fact that not all courses converge on the same
- 21:33destination, the other reason to chart a course directly to the
- 21:39to the true course is because that course is also in part the
- 21:43destination. God's greatest gifts are His
- 21:49Son, His Spirit, and His life. The purpose or destination of
- 21:54life is to receive those gifts, return home to God, and help
- 22:00others do the same. That's point B.
- 22:02That's the destination. Except for the gift of God's
- 22:06life, eternal life, everything else is to be realized along the
- 22:13course. To that extent, the course is
- 22:16also partially the destination. Get on course, stay there, and
- 22:22you will make it. A common view of our journey is
- 22:28bite the bullet now for a greater reward later.
- 22:33Resist temptation of an immediate reward and preference
- 22:37for a far better one later. This view is particularly driven
- 22:42by our understanding of heaven, or eternal life, which is of
- 22:47course the ultimate goal, the epitome of delayed reward.
- 22:52In the grand scheme of things, eternal life is God's greatest
- 22:56gift. But while the hope of eternal
- 22:58life holds sway with our choices today, generally people are more
- 23:04heavily influenced by how life can be better here and now.
- 23:10In their book titled The One Thing, the authors observed that
- 23:16economists have long known that even though people prefer big
- 23:20rewards over small ones, they have an even stronger preference
- 23:26for present rewards over future ones, even when the future
- 23:30rewards are much bigger. It's an ordinary occurrence,
- 23:35oddly named as hyperbolic discounting.
- 23:40The further away the reward is in the future, the smaller the
- 23:45immediate motivation to achieve it.
- 23:49God's plan for his children, however, is not entirely delayed
- 23:54gratification. Suffer now and hope for glory
- 23:58and happiness later. Not hardly.
- 24:02The supreme blessings in this life, the best we can
- 24:06experience, the best of all human conditions in this life
- 24:11are God's Son, His Spirit and all the blessings that flow from
- 24:18it, the hope of eternal life and helping other people receive
- 24:24those same gifts. All of that is part of the
- 24:28course, and all of that is available here and now.
- 24:39Speaking of the House of Israel in the latter days, among
- 24:43others, Nephi said They shall come to the knowledge of their
- 24:47Redeemer and the very points of his doctrine, that they may know
- 24:51how to come unto him and be saved.
- 24:56The course is how. The course is how to get to the
- 25:01destination. Point B.
- 25:04What is the how, or in other words, what is the course?
- 25:09We might quickly say keep the commandments and saying so we
- 25:15would be correct. The Lord has said as much in the
- 25:19Doctrine Covenants, for example. And if you keep my commandments
- 25:23and endure to the end, you shall have eternal life.
- 25:27Which gift is the greatest of all the gifts of God?
- 25:32But the Lord also has repeatedly defined the course more
- 25:36specifically, detailing the waypoints along the way that
- 25:42collectively comprise the course to eternal life.
- 25:47The greatest mystery, it seems to me, in the gospel of Jesus
- 25:51Christ is the gospel of Jesus Christ.
- 25:56It is odd because the Lord has defined it over and over again,
- 26:01clearly and repeatedly. He also said we should take it
- 26:06to all the world. That is the knowledge of their
- 26:10Redeemer and the very points of His doctrine, that they may know
- 26:13how to come unto him and be saved.
- 26:20As is the case with other gospel terms, the gospel of Jesus
- 26:25Christ and the doctrine of Jesus Christ are terms that on
- 26:29occasion are used more broadly. But by and large those terms are
- 26:34not only interchangeable, but are clearly defined and
- 26:39repeatedly defined. Here are a few examples.
- 26:45Doctrine of Covenants, Section 33.
- 26:48Yeah, repent and be baptized, everyone of you, for remission
- 26:53of your sins. Yeah, be baptized even by water,
- 26:57and then cometh the baptism of fire and of the Holy Ghost.
- 27:02Behold, verily, verily, I say unto you, this is my gospel.
- 27:07And remember that they shall have faith in me, or they can,
- 27:11and no wise be saved. And upon this rock I will build
- 27:15my church. That is the rock of his gospel.
- 27:19Yeah, upon this rock ye are built.
- 27:22And if he continue, the gates of hell shall not prevail against
- 27:26you. Doctrine Covenant, Section 39.
- 27:31And verily I say unto you, he that receiveth my gospel
- 27:34receiveth me, and he that receiveth not my gospel
- 27:38receiveth not me. And this is my gospel,
- 27:43repentance and baptism by water. And then cometh the baptism of
- 27:48fire and the Holy Ghost, even the Comforter, which showeth all
- 27:52things, and teacheth the peaceable things of the Kingdom.
- 27:59Nephi says he must speak about the doctrine of Christ.
- 28:05He then teaches faith in Christ, repentance, baptism, the Holy
- 28:13Ghost, and enduring to the end. He concludes by saying, And now
- 28:17behold, my beloved brethren, this is the way, and there is
- 28:22none other way, nor name given under heaven, whereby man can be
- 28:27saved in the Kingdom of God. And now behold, this is the
- 28:31doctrine of Christ, and the only and true doctrine of the Father,
- 28:37and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, which is 1.
- 28:39God without, and Amen. For emphasis, the Lord on one
- 28:46one occasion characterized the same principles under 4
- 28:50different banners, as my gospel, the Gospel, the Word, and the
- 28:59commandment. As for my gospel and the Gospel,
- 29:03he says, all men will be judged before Him by their works.
- 29:09And it shall come to pass that whoso repenteth and is baptized,
- 29:14and my name shall be filled. And if he endureth to the end,
- 29:19behold him will I hold guiltless before my Father at that day
- 29:23when I shall stand to judge the world.
- 29:26And then he says, And this is the word which he had given unto
- 29:32the children of man, And no unclean thing can enter into His
- 29:36Kingdom, therefore nothing enter into His rest, save it be those
- 29:41who have washed their garments in My blood, because of their
- 29:45faith, and the repentance of all their sins, and their
- 29:49faithfulness unto the end. And then he characterizes it as
- 29:54the commandment, saying, Now this is the commandment, Repent
- 29:59all ye ends of the earth, and coming to Me, and be baptized in
- 30:03my name, that you may be sanctified by the reception of
- 30:06the Holy Ghost, that you may stand spotless before me at the
- 30:10last day. Verily, verily, I say unto you,
- 30:14This is my Gospel, and you know the things you must do in my
- 30:19Church, for the works which you have seen me do, that shall ye
- 30:23also do. For that what you have seen me
- 30:27do, even that shall ye do. The Lord also said, Behold,
- 30:35verily, verily, I say unto you, I will declare unto you my
- 30:38doctrine. And this is my doctrine, and it
- 30:42is the doctrine which the Father hath given unto me.
- 30:45And I bear record of the Father, And the Father bear beareth
- 30:49record of Me. And the Holy Ghost beareth
- 30:51record of the Father and Me. And I bear record that the
- 30:55Father commanded all men everywhere to repent and believe
- 30:59in Me. And whoso believeth in Me and is
- 31:03baptized, the same shall be saved.
- 31:05And they are they who shall inherit the Kingdom of God.
- 31:09And whoso believeth not in Me, and is not baptized, shall be
- 31:14damned. Verily, verily, I say unto you,
- 31:17that this is my doctrine, and I bear record of it from the
- 31:23Father. And whoso believeth in Me,
- 31:25believeth in the Father also. And unto him will the Father
- 31:29bear record of me, For he will visit him with fire.
- 31:34Listen to this, He will visit him with fire and with the Holy
- 31:38Ghost. And thus will the Father bear
- 31:41record of me, and the Holy Ghost will bear record unto him, of
- 31:45the Father, and me. For the Father and I and the
- 31:48Holy Ghost are what? And again I say unto you, You
- 31:52must repent, and become as a little child, and be baptized in
- 31:56my name, or you can and no wise receive these things.
- 32:01And again I say unto you, You must repent and be baptized in
- 32:06my name, and become as a little child, or you can and no wise
- 32:10inherit the Kingdom of God. Verily, verily, I say unto you,
- 32:15that this is my doctrine, and whoso buildeth upon this
- 32:21buildeth upon my rock, and the gates of hell should not prevail
- 32:26against them. And who shall declare?
- 32:29Listen to this, and who shall declare more or less than this,
- 32:34and establish it from my doctrine?
- 32:37The same cometh of evil, and it's not built upon my rock, but
- 32:42He buildeth upon a sandy foundation, and the gates of
- 32:45hell stand open to receive such when the floods come and the
- 32:50winds beat upon them. Therefore go forth unto this
- 32:54people, and declare the words which I have spoken unto the
- 32:59ends of the earth. I know that's a lot, but the
- 33:05Lord has. It's not even a beginning of how
- 33:08much the Lord has repeatedly defined His doctrine and His
- 33:13gospel. When we use the phrases the
- 33:18Gospel of Jesus Christ or the doctrine of Christ, what do
- 33:22people understand those phrases mean?
- 33:26Many think of all the principles and teachings of Christ as as a
- 33:31whole rather than the narrow definition the Lord has
- 33:34repeatedly given. While the broader definition may
- 33:39be correct in some instances, it is less meaningful because it is
- 33:44so broad. If everything is swept into one
- 33:48bucket, most of the individual contents are buried one on top
- 33:53of another, which is why the Lord has repeatedly, carefully
- 33:58and simply pulled them out of the bucket and laid out the
- 34:03course very clearly. The waypoints along our journey,
- 34:07His gospel, His doctrine. These truths are are are so
- 34:14monumentally important that the Lord has said if parents in Zion
- 34:20don't teach them to their children by age 8.
- 34:25The sin will be upon the heads of the parents saying and again,
- 34:30inasmuch as parents have children in Zion or any of her
- 34:34stakes which are organized that teach them not to understand the
- 34:40doctrine of repentance, faith in Christ the Son of the living
- 34:44God, and a baptism and the gift of the Holy Ghost by the laying
- 34:49on of hands when 8 years old, the sin be upon the heads of the
- 34:54parents. Pretty sobering statement.
- 34:59And why? Why age 8?
- 35:02Is it because younger children are more teachable?
- 35:07Maybe to some extent. But while younger children are
- 35:11more impressionable, what happens at age 8?
- 35:17They become accountable, and what happens then?
- 35:23Eventually they die. Eventually they die spiritually,
- 35:29having become accountable. They make mistakes and the
- 35:33Spirit withdraws. And if they don't, if they don't
- 35:37understand the gospel or the doctrine of Christ, they won't
- 35:41know what's happened to them when it does, much less know how
- 35:47to fix it. And so is Nephi said, And we
- 35:52talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we
- 35:57prophecy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies that
- 36:03to the end that our children may know to what source they may
- 36:11look for a remission of their sins.
- 36:15One of the best expressions of the standard by which we will be
- 36:19judged is given by Nephi, who said if the Lamb of God, he
- 36:25being holy, should have need to be baptized by water to fulfill
- 36:29our righteousness. Oh, then how much more need have
- 36:34we being unholy to be baptized? Yeah, even by water it showeth
- 36:41unto the children of men the straightness of the path and the
- 36:44narrowness of the gate by which they should enter, He having set
- 36:49the example before them. And he said unto the children of
- 36:54men, Follow thou me. And the Father said, Repent ye,
- 36:58repent ye, and be baptized in the name of my beloved Son.
- 37:03And also the voice of the Son came unto me Nephi, saying, He
- 37:09that is baptized in my name, to him will the Father give the
- 37:12Holy Ghost like unto me. Wherefore follow me, and do the
- 37:17things which you have seen me do.
- 37:21He that endureth to the end, the same shall be saved.
- 37:24And now, my beloved brethren, I know by this that unless a man
- 37:28shall endure to the end in following the example of the Son
- 37:33of the living God, he cannot be saved.
- 37:37And then Nephi gives a marvelous summary statement of hope,
- 37:41saying this. Wherefore you must press forward
- 37:45with a steadfastness in Christ, having a perfect brightness of
- 37:50hope, and a love of God, and of all men.
- 37:54Wherefore if you shall press forward, feasting upon the Word
- 37:59of Christ, and endure to the end, behold, thus saith the
- 38:04Father, ye shall have eternal life.
- 38:11So what then is the standard by which one will be judged?
- 38:16Did you have faith in Christ by repenting of your sins to bring
- 38:21your life into harmony with His teachings, and by entering the
- 38:25covenant of baptism to keep His commandments?
- 38:30Did you receive and keep the power of God in your life, the
- 38:33gift of the Holy Ghost? Did you make and keep additional
- 38:37covenants associated with the ordinances of the temple,
- 38:41particularly temple marriage, if that is, if that's available to
- 38:46you? Did you press forward
- 38:49incorporating into your life the Word of Christ?
- 38:53And did you stay the course engaged in His work building the
- 38:56Kingdom of God as an active contributing member of His
- 39:01Church? The Lord warned, saying, and of
- 39:06tenants, thou shalt not talk, but thou shalt declare
- 39:10repentance and faith on the Savior, and remission of sins by
- 39:15baptism and by fire. Yeah, even the Holy Ghost.
- 39:19Behold, this is a great and the last commandment which I get,
- 39:24which I shall give unto you concerning this matter.
- 39:27For this shall suffice for thy daily walk, even to the end of
- 39:33thy life. The waypoints along the course
- 39:39that leads to God's Son, His Spirit, and His life are again
- 39:47faith in Christ, repentance, ordinances beginning with
- 39:52baptism for the remission of sins, receive the Holy Ghost and
- 39:58endure to the end, building up the Kingdom of God.
- 40:02That is the course. That is the course, overcoming
- 40:07the natural state of things, order out of chaos, light over
- 40:13darkness, and life over death. In coming episodes, we will
- 40:19explore each of those particular waypoints and greater depth.
- 40:25I invite and hope you will join me for that.
- 40:29You're either on the path or you're not.
- 40:34If not, get on it. If you're on it, stay the
- 40:40course. Stay on it and you will make it.
