- 0:10SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Daily Writer, where we share a lesson each day to help you cultivate the habits for creative success.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: Edward Gibbon was one of the most famous historians of all time.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: As the author of the six-volume set, The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, he showed the world that history could be informative and entertaining while also making the ancient world accessible to the contemporary reader.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: Gibbon was born in the county of Surrey, England in 1737.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: And while he was on a trip to Rome in October 1764, he was so enraptured by the history of that city that he decided to write a book about it.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: And he later expanded the idea to include the entire Roman Empire.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: At this point, Edward Gibbon was in his late twenties.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: It took him 12 years to publish the first volume of the decline and fall of the Roman Empire, and to say that it was well received would be a huge understatement.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: The public loved it as well as subsequent volumes, and it cemented his legacy as one of the world's eminent and insightful historians.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: Now, whenever he started work on these books, he didn't necessarily have this end goal in mind.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: In fact, he once said, unprovided with original learning, unformed in the habits of thinking, unskilled in the arts of composition, I resolved to write a book.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: This is the key element needed to become a writer of influence.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: It's not formal education, it's not a title, and it's certainly not somebody else's approval.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: It's simply the desire and the dedication, or dare we say, the pure stubbornness, to start a project and to see it through to completion.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: So do you ever feel unqualified?
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: Do you ever feel less than ready?
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: Do you wonder if you have what it takes?
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: If so, don't stress about it.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: Almost every single writer feels that way at the beginning of a project.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: I know that I always do.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: So just dive in and do it anyway.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: The more that you work at it, the more confident and motivated you'll feel.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: And whenever you finish, you'll be so glad that you not only started, but that you saw it through to the end.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: So keep going, keep moving, and just do it anyway.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: Thanks so much for listening to today's episode.
