- 1:12Thank you so much. Elon Musk's AI company XAI, is
- 1:18building a video game studio. Not a traditional studio that
- 1:22happens to use AI tools, A studio where AI is the entire
- 1:26point. Now, the company posted a public
- 1:29call for developers this week asking for people who want to
- 1:32build games from first principles, with artificial
- 1:35intelligence at the center of every direct decision.
- 1:39Anna Musk has said that the studio will release its first AI
- 1:43generated game before the end of 2026 is very close.
- 1:47This is also a very different approach than anything that the
- 1:50major publishers are doing right now.
- 1:53And whether it works or not, it signals something important
- 1:56about where AI and gaming might be headed.
- 1:59XAI has been hiring for this project since at least October.
- 2:04Job listings have appeared for game developers and what the
- 2:07company calls video game tutors. People paid 45 to $100.00 an
- 2:11hour to train Rock on game design, concepts, mechanics, and
- 2:15also storytelling. And the studio is not fully
- 2:18structured yet. It appears to be in the early
- 2:20stages of assembling A-Team, but Musk has been telegraphing this
- 2:24move for over a year and now it appears to be absolutely real.
- 2:29So today we're going to walk through what XAI is actually
- 2:31building, how it compares to what Microsoft and NVIDIA are
- 2:35actually doing, what this could mean for the gaming industry,
- 2:37and why some people are very skeptical about this approach
- 2:41right after this break. Now, this announcement started
- 2:46on X Musk's charity post confirming that XAI is hiring
- 2:50for video games. In response to a user who posted
- 2:53an AI generated clip of what looked like a military shooter,
- 2:56Musk wrote that this XAI game studio will release a great AI
- 3:01generated game before the end of next year.
- 3:04That is the timeline, the end of 2026.
- 3:07A fully AI generated game that Musk is already calling great
- 3:11before any of it even exists. And what actually does AI
- 3:16generated mean in this context? Means the game's worlds,
- 3:20characters, dialogue and challenges would be created
- 3:24dynamically by the AI rather than pre scripted or written by
- 3:28human developers. Traditional games have fixed
- 3:31content. Every player sees pretty much
- 3:33the same levels, same enemies, the same story beats.
- 3:37An AI generated game could theoretically create unique
- 3:39experiences for every single player, with environments and
- 3:42narratives that evolve based on you and how you actually play.
- 3:48XAI says it wants to build games from first principles, and that
- 3:51phrase keeps appearing in the job postings and public
- 3:54statements. This suggests the company is not
- 3:56interested in layering AI onto existing game development.
- 3:59Pipelines wants to start from the beginning, from scratched
- 4:03with AI at the core, and developers who joined would be
- 4:06building tools and systems that do not currently exist.
- 4:10Everything is new. This is research and development
- 4:12wrapped in a consumer product, and Musk first floated the idea
- 4:16back in 2024. About November, he posted on X
- 4:19that too many game studios are owned by massive corporations
- 4:23that XAI would start an AI game studio to make a games great
- 4:27again. Now, that framing was political,
- 4:29of course, aimed at what Musk perceives as ideological
- 4:33influence in mainstream game development.
- 4:35But the underlying bet is the technology.
- 4:40Can generative AI produce games that feel coherent and gauging
- 4:44and you actually want to play them?
- 4:47I mean, I'm a gamer. I play games for hundreds of
- 4:49hours sometimes, sometimes thousands of hours over the
- 4:52course of years. And when Elon says that he
- 4:57doesn't want massive corporations in charge of the
- 5:00games, think about his legacy. All of his companies, they work
- 5:04together. XAI is 1 arm of everything but
- 5:07Grok and X and SpaceX and Tesla, they all work together.
- 5:13But you know, can all of this be done by XAI?
- 5:18And is it actually worth playing?
- 5:20We don't know. That's what we're trying to
- 5:21answer here. And we're going to see hopefully
- 5:24by the end of 2026, if that's going to be a thing.
- 5:28Now, XAI is not the only company experimenting with AI in games.
- 5:32Microsoft launched a browser playable version of Quake 2 this
- 5:36year using the Muse AI model. The demo is old school.
- 5:42It runs a 640 by 360 res and generates every frame in real
- 5:46time based on player input. You can move, shoot, and
- 5:49explore, and the AI creates the visuals on the fly.
- 5:53Microsoft says it trained the model on about one week of
- 5:56gameplay data, down from the seven years of data required for
- 6:00earlier versions. It's pretty rough though.
- 6:03The enemies seem to be blurry. The world's don't really connect
- 6:08well. Frame rate hovers around 15
- 6:13frames per second, which is pretty horrible in today's, you
- 6:16know, 300 plus frame rates with some games.
- 6:19But it works. You can play inside the model as
- 6:21Microsoft describes it, inside of a browser.
- 6:23Phil Spencer, who's the head of Microsoft Gaming, has talked
- 6:26about using this tech for game preservation, allowing old
- 6:29titles to run on modern hardware without needing the original
- 6:32source code or the engine. Because languages change over
- 6:36time. JavaScript has changed, HTML has
- 6:39changed. For me, I'm a front end coder,
- 6:41so I see those things change. All the other languages change
- 6:45and evolve, so having these old titles be available forever,
- 6:50that would be kind of cool. And NVIDIA is pursuing a
- 6:53different angle, though it's ace for a game system focuses on
- 6:56creating AI driven digital humans, characters that can
- 6:59respond dynamically to player input with realistic speech and
- 7:02behavior. The goal is NPCS that feel like
- 7:06people. They remember what you say to
- 7:09them. They react to your choices in
- 7:11ways that feel natural rather than scripted.
- 7:15And also, Roblox has rolled out a tool called Roblox Cube that
- 7:19helps developers build games using generative AI.
- 7:22Google's DeepMind has experimented with world models
- 7:24that can generate playable 3D environments.
- 7:27Genie 2, their latest system, creates interactive 3D worlds
- 7:30from text prompts. And the technology is advancing
- 7:33on multiple fronts. So what makes XA is approach
- 7:37distinct is the scope of ambition.
- 7:41Microsoft is treating Muse as a research project and a potential
- 7:44just a tool for prototyping a game preservation.
- 7:47NVIDIA is focused on character behavior.
- 7:50Roblox is giving developers more tools.
- 7:53XAI is saying it will ship a consumer facing game built
- 7:56entirely by AI within roughly 18 months.
- 8:01That is crazy. Little bit of time here, like
- 8:06under a year basically for them to develop and build this whole
- 8:11game. And it could be a short game,
- 8:14like a 30 minute game. I mean that that's a game,
- 8:17right? Is there going to be a
- 8:19multiplayer part to it? We don't know.
- 8:22He didn't say anything about it in earnest, but it puts the
- 8:26company in a different category of risk and expectation
- 8:28considering what they're going to be doing.
- 8:31The global video game market is projected to exceed $600 billion
- 8:34by 20-30. AI is increasingly used in story
- 8:38design, character development, procedural content generation,
- 8:42and quality assurance testing. Now, a recent Google Cloud
- 8:45survey found that 87% of developers are now using AI
- 8:50agents that adapt to players in real time.
- 8:52The industry is already moving in this direction.
- 8:55The question is whether XAI can leapfrog others and deliver
- 8:59something genuinely new and actually good that you want to
- 9:03play. Think about it like this.
- 9:09Strong AI tools are helpful but do not replace people because
- 9:14you need leadership for things like this.
- 9:16It's a complex problem to solve, right?
- 9:18The creative people to drive those storylines.
- 9:22Generative models can produce content quickly and I mean we
- 9:26all use chat 2BT, right? You can create anything within
- 9:29seconds, but that content may not connect with players the way
- 9:32the human crafted experiences do.
- 9:35The game needs to feel intentional and needs to feel
- 9:37like you need to feel something. It needs pacing just like a
- 9:41movie, just like a show. Emotional arcs just like a movie
- 9:44in a show. Moments of surprise and tension,
- 9:47laughter, humor, things like that.
- 9:50And we all know that Chiat TPD has no humor.
- 9:54It does. It's not good at it.
- 9:56And, you know, it can make some OK stories, but for the most
- 10:00part, it's very basic. And Xai and Croc hasn't shown
- 10:07anything meaningful in that regard either, You know, more
- 10:12meaningful than something like Chattibeti or Clod or anything
- 10:16like that. Now, whether AI can deliver
- 10:19those quantities at the level that players expect from AAA
- 10:24titles remains unproven because it hasn't been done yet,
- 10:29especially a AAA title like Elon is talking about.
- 10:32There's also the question of what AI generated actually means
- 10:36in practice. Musk has shown demos of Grok
- 10:39generating simple 2D games like Pac-Man close using JavaScript.
- 10:44These are basic implementations generating a polished 3D
- 10:48experience with physics narratives.
- 10:51Cohesion in visual fidelity is orders of magnitude harder.
- 10:57Musk has said XAI is working on integrating photorealistic
- 11:00graphics into AI games, but he's not explained how to do it.
- 11:04The gap between a proof of concept in a shippable product
- 11:07is quite vast. So think about this legacy.
- 11:14Hollywood studios have spent the last few decades on trying to
- 11:20build lifelike, photorealistic people in their movies, and even
- 11:27the AAA titles of today. There's still some sort of thing
- 11:32going on with their faces and their lips and their eyes that
- 11:36see uncanny valley. You can't Unsee it either.
- 11:39Now, the gap between a proof of concept for Elon in a shippable
- 11:43product is huge. It's about a year away,
- 11:46according to Elon. Now, is this another one of
- 11:48Elon's promises that won't actually happen?
- 11:52We're going to wait and find out, I guess.
- 11:55And XA is gaming push also is a pretty big strategy here.
- 12:01The company is trying to find a consumer application for Grok
- 12:04beyond the chatbot on XA. Successful game would
- 12:08demonstrate that Grok can do more than answer questions.
- 12:11It can also create gaming experiences.
- 12:14It can entertain you. That would differentiate XAI
- 12:17from Open AI, or Anthropic will focus primarily on productivity
- 12:22and enterprise applications, as well as Google.
- 12:26You know, the whole Google suite with Gemini.
- 12:28And gaming is a different market with different success criteria.
- 12:31If XAI can crack it, the implications extend well beyond
- 12:35entertainment. EA, Take Two Interactive,
- 12:39Ubisoft and other major publishers have invested heavily
- 12:41in traditional development pipelines.
- 12:44They employ thousands of artists, writers, designers and
- 12:46engineers. And if AI can meaningfully
- 12:48accelerate or replace parts of that workflow, the cost
- 12:51structure of the industry could shift dramatically.
- 12:54Smaller teams might be able to compete with larger studios now,
- 12:57and development cycles could shorten.
- 13:00The balance of power between publishers and independent
- 13:02creators could completely change.
- 13:04There might not be any more gatekeepers, but none of it is
- 13:09guaranteed. EI gaming is very early and the
- 13:13technology produces impressive demos, kind of, but has not yet
- 13:17delivered anything commercially that's any good.
- 13:22XAI is betting it can change that within about a year, maybe
- 13:252. Musk has a track record of
- 13:27setting aggressive timelines and sometimes a lot of the times
- 13:30missing them. And SpaceX was supposed to send
- 13:33humans to Mars in 2024. I had thousands of people
- 13:38working on the the Red Planet in 2020 according to Elon, years
- 13:44and years ago That didn't happen.
- 13:47Tesla's full self driving has been coming next year for many
- 13:50years now. Musk also has a track record of
- 13:52eventually delivering things that seemed impossible.
- 13:56Reusable rock is like the Falcon 9 and now Starship.
- 14:00Starship's not quite there yet, but it will be E VS at scale.
- 14:04Tesla, everything at Tesla and also global satellite Internet.
- 14:09He's delivered all those things. Not full self driving, but E VS
- 14:13at scale. Not complete starships yet, but
- 14:17definitely Falcon on reusable rockets which paved the way for
- 14:20future missions to Mars. Now the gaming industry will be
- 14:24watching all of this from afar because XAI is just a little guy
- 14:30right now. They're not worried about Elon.
- 14:32They're not worried about XAI. They have their pipelines that
- 14:35they have to fulfill. They're going to implement their
- 14:38own AI technologies and what I think is going to happen, which
- 14:41I believe this is happening with vehicles as well, is the hybrid
- 14:45approach. Nobody's ready to really
- 14:50completely switch over to complete battery power yet for
- 14:55vehicles. Not a major chunk of the
- 14:58population yet. All right?
- 15:00So there's going to be ICE vehicles, there's going to be E
- 15:05VS. And then there's going to be
- 15:06something in between, which is a hybrid, which is the safety of
- 15:09an ICE vehicle because you're not going to run out of gas.
- 15:12And also the luxury of an EV where it's quiet, it's nice, and
- 15:21you don't have to worry about using gas for your car, you just
- 15:26charge it at home. It's nice, right?
- 15:28It's a nice thing to have. So I think that's what's going
- 15:30to happen with most of these studios is they're going to
- 15:32continue doing what they're doing, but add AI elements to
- 15:35it, sort of like what enterprise coding has done.
- 15:39So everything that's like lower level in the gaming studios will
- 15:44be replaced by AI. Eventually AI will be able to
- 15:48create the code for a base layer for a game, but eventually those
- 15:54middle layers will also be taken away.
- 15:58So middle coders have been taken away from front end web
- 16:02development for a while now. Beginners, good luck.
- 16:05You're not going to you're not going to find anything list with
- 16:07the it's maybe a local studio. That's about it.
- 16:10Right now you can't find anything in the the big Fang
- 16:14companies anymore have for starters.
- 16:17And also eventually the higher levels too, because AI will
- 16:21figure out a way to take your job too.
- 16:25And above that there's going to just going to be prompters,
- 16:28etcetera, that'll be doing the work.
- 16:29That'll be like, hey, create me a game that does XYZ, create me
- 16:35a game a mix between Battlefield and also Roblox.
- 16:40Like that's cool, that'll be fun, but also adds Minecraft
- 16:43elements to it, blah, blah, blah, you know, whatever they
- 16:46want to do. There's so many different
- 16:47options. But also throw in Pac-Man,
- 16:49that'd be interesting. So AI gaming market is expected
- 16:55to grow from 3.2 billion now to 59 billion in 10 years.
- 17:05According to Dimension Market Research.
- 17:07It's an 18 fold increase in about 10 years.
- 17:11Now, whoever figures out how to make AI generated games work
- 17:15could capture a large amount of that market now.
- 17:21Musk has called this effort an attempt to make games great
- 17:24again. Definitely political.
- 17:27Whether that happens depends on execution and the code will
- 17:31either work or it won't. We might get a small demo by the
- 17:35end of 2026. I think it'll be pretty fun to
- 17:37have a like a 10 minute demo that'll be great.
- 17:41No amount of hype though can substitute for a product that
- 17:44players actually want to spend time with.
- 17:47XAI has to deliver by the end of 2026.
- 17:54Hey, thank you so much for listening today.
- 17:56I really do appreciate your support.
- 17:58If you could take a second and hit this subscribe or the follow

- 18:04appreciate it. It helps out the show
- 18:06tremendously. And you'll nip and each episode
- 18:09is about 10 minutes to get you caught up quickly.
