Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Donald de Mayo's our Australia correspondent Don a good morning.
- 0:02Speaker 1: Good morning, is elbow pecking a fight with Trump over
- 0:06Speaker 1: social media?
- 0:08Speaker 2: Kind of but not really.
- 0:09Speaker 1: No, it's a case of what am I making this
- 0:11Speaker 1: story sound more interesting than it is.
- 0:14Speaker 2: It's a case of what happens next, isn't it really?
- 0:17Speaker 2: There's all questions being asked in the aftermath of that
- 0:20Speaker 2: election win. So Australia is I suppose reassuring the federal government,
- 0:25Speaker 2: I should say, is trying to reassure the Australian public
- 0:28Speaker 2: that it will still pursue AI regulation, social media regulation,
- 0:33Speaker 2: despite as it says, that Trump administration opposing it. It's
- 0:37Speaker 2: going to push through with these regulations in these areas.
- 0:40Speaker 2: And we heard from the Industry Minister, Ed Husseick. Now
- 0:43Speaker 2: the minister says that he needs to reassure Australians that
- 0:47Speaker 2: he and his government will pursue what it calls the
- 0:51Speaker 2: national priorities. And we know that Trump is promising to
- 0:56Speaker 2: roll back AI regulation while Australia is saying we are
- 0:59Speaker 2: going to devel The federal government says what they've described
- 1:03Speaker 2: as guard rails for high risk uses of AI. For instance,
- 1:07Speaker 2: there's going to be some new laws and also they're
- 1:11Speaker 2: looking at their social media policies as well, and the
- 1:15Speaker 2: Minister says the public expects action in these fields. He says,
- 1:19Speaker 2: where possible, Australia will work with other countries, but if
- 1:23Speaker 2: we need to, it will be localized and that will
- 1:26Speaker 2: be pursued. And to quote the Minister, we need to
- 1:29Speaker 2: take these steps necessary so that people can have the
- 1:31Speaker 2: confidence to actually use AI into the future. So it
- 1:35Speaker 2: was a very interesting comments to be made.
- 1:37Speaker 1: What type of guardrails are they talking about?
- 1:39Speaker 2: How do I was afraid you'd ask that things like
- 1:43Speaker 2: being able to have human intervention and oversight. For instance,
- 1:47Speaker 2: when we are using AR you want, of course.
- 1:50Speaker 1: You want a human Yes, if it starts you know,
- 1:53Speaker 1: I don't know if it's the computer starts fizzing, blowing
- 1:55Speaker 1: up or shooting people. You want a human to be
- 1:58Speaker 1: able to press the button and turn it off, not.
- 2:00Speaker 2: To sensationalize in any way, shape.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Or for money. Australia's first Anti Slavery Commission has been appointed.
- 2:07Speaker 1: What is this?
- 2:08Speaker 2: This is a very serious matter. Of course, there's an
- 2:10Speaker 2: estimated forty one thousand people living in modern slavery in Australia,
- 2:14Speaker 2: and so we have heard from the government and they've
- 2:17Speaker 2: appointed the former Labor Senator Chris Evans, and he's going
- 2:20Speaker 2: to address these exploitative practices. We're talking about deceptive recruiting,
- 2:26Speaker 2: we're talking about debt bondage, we are talking about forced marriages,
- 2:29Speaker 2: human trafficking and forced labor. It's a five year term
- 2:32Speaker 2: for the former Immigration and Workplace Relations Minister. And we
- 2:35Speaker 2: also heard from the Attorney General who said that of
- 2:38Speaker 2: course modern slavery deprives the victim of the dignity, fundamental
- 2:42Speaker 2: rights and freedom.
- 2:44Speaker 1: All Right, Donna, thank you very much for that. Donald,
- 2:46Speaker 1: our Australia correspondent.
