- 0:48[SPEAKER_01]: Hey everybody Brian Smith here with the Iain team series and your daily influence and today we're going to talk about influence and you know one of the things that we talk about a lot is influence is something that we really take for granted it's almost like breathing how often do we think about
- 1:11[SPEAKER_01]: our breath and how we breathe unless we're mindful about it.
- 1:16[SPEAKER_01]: And then we slow ourselves down.
- 1:17[SPEAKER_01]: And we realize that our breath is amazingly important in and out.
- 1:24[SPEAKER_01]: It's amazingly important.
- 1:25[SPEAKER_01]: And when we do that, we can calm down.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_01]: And it's very similar when we think about our influence.
- 1:32[SPEAKER_01]: And what our influence does for us when we begin to understand it.
- 1:41[SPEAKER_01]: Never stops.
- 1:43[SPEAKER_01]: It's something that's always there.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_01]: We go to sleep with it.
- 1:47[SPEAKER_01]: We wake up to it.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_01]: We dream about it.
- 1:49[SPEAKER_01]: Even in our sleep, we're influencing ourselves or our dreams are.
- 1:53[SPEAKER_01]: And whether we realize it or not, every interaction we have, no matter how small carries influence with it and a sigh.
- 2:05[SPEAKER_01]: a delay in response, eye contact, lack of eye contact, all of these things influence us in an influence those around us.
- 2:17[SPEAKER_01]: We often think of influence as intentional or something that we do deliberately.
- 2:22[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, we talk about influencers in social media, but most of our influence
- 2:32[SPEAKER_01]: recognizing that we're always influencing, or being influenced, is really a first step to be more intentional and responsible about our influence.
- 2:44[SPEAKER_01]: Understanding that we're a responsible person, a responsible leader, a responsible teammate friend, doesn't matter what it is that we're doing, but being responsible and positive in those moments can move us forward in the right direction.
- 3:01[SPEAKER_01]: If you remember that you're always broadcasting, it's not just when you post, it's in between.
- 3:07[SPEAKER_01]: It's not just when you speak.
- 3:09[SPEAKER_01]: It's always.
- 3:10[SPEAKER_01]: So, always be aware of the signals that you give off.
- 3:16[SPEAKER_01]: And it's really important.
- 3:17[SPEAKER_01]: And it begins with this self-awareness.
- 3:20[SPEAKER_01]: Self-awareness is the switch.
- 3:23[SPEAKER_01]: of understanding.
- 3:25[SPEAKER_01]: Because before we can understand how we influence other, we must first become aware of how we're influencing what influences us, how we influence ourselves, that inner dialogue these habits that we have, some of them that we don't think about, our emotional responses, they shape how we show up.
- 3:48[SPEAKER_01]: They determine how people see us and think about us.
- 3:51[SPEAKER_01]: First impressions can start with
- 3:53[SPEAKER_01]: the lack of eye contact or the lack of acknowledgement.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_01]: The stories we tell ourselves influence our choices.
- 4:01[SPEAKER_01]: We can lie to ourselves.
- 4:03[SPEAKER_01]: We can mirror other things in our life.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_01]: We can do so much with our influence.
- 4:09[SPEAKER_01]: As I say, we take it for granted.
- 4:11[SPEAKER_01]: And it's this inner influence that oftentimes radiates outward and we don't even realize it.
- 4:18[SPEAKER_01]: How many times, if you had somebody come to work and you can tell that something is wrong, you can tell that they are burdened, you can tell that they are sad, you can tell that they are happy, you can tell that something good has happened to them.
- 4:32[SPEAKER_01]: Sometimes it's just as simple as a smile or somebody was friendly or maybe they had a great morning with their partner or children.
- 4:41[SPEAKER_01]: But the thing is, is that inner influence, what's going on inside radiates outward?
- 4:48[SPEAKER_01]: And when we tune into what that internal driver is, we begin to gain an ability to shift our external influence and have a little bit more control over it.
- 5:00[SPEAKER_01]: We can determine what those interactions are going to be like, what those responses are like, a lot of times, you may know this from your own experience, when you're not feeling good and you're portraying that outward and people ask you, you dread it, you with the draw in,
- 5:18[SPEAKER_01]: You don't want people to feel sorry, you don't want people to engage.
- 5:23[SPEAKER_01]: But the fact is, is that we're humans, and a lot of times we carry our feelings, our emotions, on our sleeve, especially in places like work, home, where we're comfortable.
- 5:36[SPEAKER_01]: Most of the time, those two places are where we are the most comfortable.
- 5:42[SPEAKER_01]: Because we spend so much time here, we develop so many comfortable habits in
- 5:48[SPEAKER_01]: those places of work or at home.
- 5:51[SPEAKER_01]: So when we have this ability to understand what's going on inside and what is influencing us, we can then begin to understand and realize how we're portraying that.
- 6:04[SPEAKER_01]: Now I own all of my body language.
- 6:08[SPEAKER_01]: I share with people.
- 6:10[SPEAKER_01]: that I have a tendency to react certain ways to certain situations, so that when they come through my door, if they interrupt me, if they interact with me, that what they see matches what I've set them up to expect.
- 6:27[SPEAKER_01]: No, that doesn't mean that it's always a positive reaction, but it doesn't mean that my negative reaction is negative towards them.
- 6:34[SPEAKER_01]: It could be just me switching from one mode
- 6:41[SPEAKER_01]: I'm mostly annoyed with myself for not shutting my door, for not setting an environment where that disruption cannot happen.
- 6:49[SPEAKER_01]: But that is self-awareness.
- 6:52[SPEAKER_01]: And when you share these things with others in your life, that sharing is part of the influence.
- 6:58[SPEAKER_01]: It's part of what sets us up to be positive and more successful, to be more constructive.
- 7:05[SPEAKER_01]: And quite frankly, to be more authentic.
- 7:09[SPEAKER_01]: When we do that, and we share who we are and what our influence is and what influences us, with those around us, especially those that we deal with on a regular basis, we create an environment where the influence as a better flow has a better positivity to it.
- 7:26[SPEAKER_01]: You can't influence others well.
- 7:29[SPEAKER_01]: If you're unaware of how you're influencing yourself, you can still influence others, you will
- 7:39[SPEAKER_01]: what's going on with you?
- 7:41[SPEAKER_01]: If you don't accept it and look at it and work on it, and being human is work doesn't make it right, but it just is.
- 7:51[SPEAKER_01]: So what we do here at the IM team series, what we do here in our work is talk about that individual influence, help us realize it, help us be our best selves, not just for us, but
- 8:09[SPEAKER_01]: If I'm my best self, have my best influence for me, I am going to be my best and better for everybody else, and you can too.
- 8:17[SPEAKER_01]: And when we do that, we can build environments, work, home, friendships, build environments that are positive and responsible.
- 8:25[SPEAKER_01]: That we can understand and be intentional about.
- 8:30[SPEAKER_01]: And we can gravitate towards bigger and better things.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_01]: I hope you've enjoyed our little discussion today about influence on today's daily influence.
- 8:45[SPEAKER_01]: And I hope that you'll join us again tomorrow for another episode.
- 8:50[SPEAKER_01]: I hope you have a great day.
- 8:51[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you.
