- 0:00Over the past couple of weeks, we've seen some pretty interesting developments
- 0:03around AI data centers in North America especially, sometimes around the world,
- 0:07but especially I've seen some news
- 0:08about AI data centers, and how people do not want them in their backyard.
- 0:13It's been pretty interesting how a lot of billionaires and data centers and
- 0:17committees have been kind of pushing this behind the scenes, and people haven't
- 0:21been around them, and it was a little dangerous to see at the beginning.
- 0:23People were really worried where these data centers were gonna get snuck in.
- 0:27A few of them have been snuck in, but it was snuck in, where
- 0:29there's a lot of issues around it.
- 0:31I'm actually doing an episode on it right now for The Ocean Decoded to
- 0:35talk about data centers and their environmental footprint, but there's
- 0:38also a lot of other things going along.
- 0:40In today's episode, we're gonna be talking about the power of
- 0:42communities and the power of people.
- 0:44When they don't want something, it doesn't get done, and we're seeing
- 0:46that happen here in Canada and in the US, where a lot of data centers
- 0:50are getting canceled because people are showing up and having their say.
- 0:55And that's what happens when you live in a democracy and you can have that say,
- 0:58but not always, and here are some of the things that we need to look out for.
- 1:01And here are some of the opportunities that we could use
- 1:03when we look at AI data centers.
- 1:05And while, again, more information is gonna come out on The Ocean Decoded
- 1:08soon, probably within the next couple weeks, and you'll be able to see that.
- 1:11I've got a little bit of a mini documentary coming out for Ocean Decoded.
- 1:14All right.
- 1:15This is the How to Protect the Ocean podcast.
- 1:16We're gonna start this episode up where you get your ocean news update.
- 1:19This is Oceans Week.
- 1:21This is the place where you find out all the resources you need to do to help
- 1:24protect the ocean and get in tune and fall in love with the ocean all over again.
- 1:28Today, we're gonna be talking about a lot of issues are facing the ocean.
- 1:31A lot of people are doing some really bad things in the ocean.
- 1:34And a lot of the times, certain things get passed or legislation gets stripped down.
- 1:38We've seen that in the US and Canada right now.
- 1:40But people are standing up to the governments, and they're having
- 1:42their say, and they're not happy.
- 1:44And the governments in certain places, especially locally, are actually working.
- 1:47And this is an episode not just about how if we stand up together as communities,
- 1:51we get things accomplished, 'cause it doesn't always happen that way,
- 1:53but we can get things accomplished.
- 1:55This is a-about not giving up in especially a time where we're looking
- 1:59at a lot of environmental rollbacks, a lot of pressure against the
- 2:02environment in place of the economy.
- 2:05We are seeing a lot of problems here.
- 2:07And this is a place where you can just be like, "You know what? I want
- 2:10you to really understand the power of the voice, the power of the voice
- 2:13that you have especially if you're living here in North America." So
- 2:17we're gonna talk all about that because a lot of the times we have this eco
- 2:20anxiety, we have this ocean anxiety.
- 2:22A lot of people see it.
- 2:23You see it on the news, data centers are going in right, left,
- 2:25and center, and billionaires are putting them in, and they think…
- 2:28You know, they're very out of touch.
- 2:29They just don't understand our plight.
- 2:31If you haven't seen any of the videos from Kevin O'Leary where he's been
- 2:34trying to defend his Utah data center, where he's going to have it powered.
- 2:39It's like the size of Manhattan is going in Utah.
- 2:42And apparently the people of Utah didn't really have a say on how it was going in,
- 2:45when it was going in, how big it was, or how it was being powered, the water usage.
- 2:49And let's be honest, in Utah especially, there has been like a 20-year-long
- 2:53drought year after year after year.
- 2:55Salt Lake, which is like in Utah, has been at its lowest level ever.
- 2:59It continues to lose water because of evaporation, 'cause of climate change.
- 3:03And here is this data center that's threatening to use water from that
- 3:07area when they're in a drought.
- 3:08It doesn't make sense from an environmental perspective, a drinking
- 3:12water perspective, the usage perspective.
- 3:14And it sounded like a lot of people had their eyes covered when this
- 3:17data center was going through.
- 3:19Not to say that they weren't paying attention, but they're saying that it got
- 3:22snuck through when they didn't expect it.
- 3:24So in comes Kevin O'Leary, who's the mastermind around this.
- 3:27He wanted to put it in.
- 3:28And when it got passed three to zero on the committee, a lot of people
- 3:31were upset 'cause the committee didn't even listen to the people's
- 3:34concerns, what they were worried about.
- 3:36They weren't necessarily against it altogether.
- 3:38They wanted to know more about the project and how it's going to affect.
- 3:42What's the impact assessment?
- 3:43What's the environmental impact assessment?
- 3:44How's it gonna affect their drinking water?
- 3:46How's it gonna affect their environment?
- 3:47What power is it gonna be use- is gonna be used on their grid?
- 3:50I don't know if you've noticed, but we're in a bit of an energy crisis where we
- 3:52don't have enough power, and the amount of electricity that we use around the world
- 3:57is bigger and bigger than it ever has.
- 3:59So making sure that power's is being able to be generated for this data
- 4:02center as well as the people is something that's really important.
- 4:06Without coming through and making sure that the people's concerns
- 4:09are shown and doing it properly, if you're gonna put it in, doing it
- 4:12properly, if that's even possible, they just kind of snuck it through.
- 4:16And now, from my understanding, they've kinda taken it back after a while.
- 4:20They've taken some of those things back, and that data center
- 4:22may not go in as necessary.
- 4:24Now, with that said, there's been a lot of data center stories that have been popping
- 4:29up for AI, 'cause AI is everywhere.
- 4:31And just like cryptocurrency when it came out, data centers
- 4:33had to be brought together.
- 4:34Cryptocurrency mines, these I guess, crypto.
- 4:37I don't even know the whole part of it.
- 4:38But they use these large servers to mine, and they're always working
- 4:41and need to be cooled down 'cause it heats up, and they need to be powered.
- 4:44And a lot of the times, the power comes from fossil fuel power,
- 4:47depending on where you are, which is not good for our climate change.
- 4:50And so there's a lot of problems when we start to add it all up and cumulate
- 4:54it, especially when we look at there.
- 4:55And a lot of those cryptocurrency data centers kinda got snuck in.
- 4:58It wasn't as a prominent a story when these data centers went in.
- 5:02But they went in in areas where land was cheap, areas that may have been
- 5:06impoverished before, whether it's in a developing country or a developed country.
- 5:10And people just didn't really know about it until we saw it.
- 5:13And I'll be honest, like there's some concern that I have like in our
- 5:16rural area, I live just outside the country in this town, in Burlington.
- 5:20There's a lot of big warehouses going up, and we don't know what they're for.
- 5:23Sometimes they'll have like companies, but like I've never
- 5:25heard of some of these companies.
- 5:26It could be warehouses.
- 5:27I know one's an Amazon Center, like a warehouse kind of thing.
- 5:31But a lot of the other times you're just like, "Wait a minute.
- 5:32Hold on a second.
- 5:33Like, what are these data centers?
- 5:34Is this what this is gonna be?" There's concerns of noise, there's
- 5:37concerns of water, there's concerns of how the power generated.
- 5:40A lot of concerns.
- 5:41And when committees and local communities and provincial and state communities
- 5:45do not address the people, the people can stand up and really have a say.
- 5:50So case in point just locally here, there was a data center that was proposed in
- 5:54Hamilton, just the city right beside us.
- 5:56Pretty big city, over 300,000, I think larger when you
- 5:59consider the surrounding areas.
- 6:01People were pissed that this data center was going in, and it was going
- 6:05on for, like, a couple of weeks.
- 6:06I saw a lot of videos, people trying to get the community out to protest it.
- 6:09When they were outside, this happened this past day, yesterday, as of recording this.
- 6:14When they were outside, and they were yelling, and they were inside,
- 6:16and they were talking, and they were proposing ideas and having their say,
- 6:20the council for Hamilton, the City of Hamilton, said, "Hey, you know what?"
- 6:23It wasn't necessarily like a data center was going in, it was about how this
- 6:26land could be severed to allow the data center to go in, I guess, to rezone it.
- 6:30And the councilor said, "Hey, you know what? Based on the feedback we're getting
- 6:33from the community, the feedback we've gotten all week," he's had over thousands
- 6:36of emails, 1,600 emails, talking about how they don't want this data center in.
- 6:40He's not gonna approve it because the people have spoken, and
- 6:43he is beholden to the people.
- 6:45When you have councilors and you have politicians who are beholden
- 6:48to the people, things go right.
- 6:50If you are not happy with this, you get what you want.
- 6:54As long as the people show up.
- 6:55You have to show up in numbers.
- 6:56If you show up one or two, they may not listen.
- 6:59They may see, like, the benefits, or they may see like, "Well, AI is the future,
- 7:02and we need to do this, and we need to step our game up, and we need to be
- 7:05leaders." And this is the problem with things like AI and like crypto before,
- 7:09is everybody wants to be a leader in the game, especially countries, so they
- 7:12develop and develop and develop, and they, recoil, or they exempt certain
- 7:16environmental regulations so it can go through faster, so they can get more
- 7:19data centers up and do more with AI.
- 7:21And I'm not necessarily against AI.
- 7:23I use it in my process.
- 7:26But I also want this stuff to be done correctly.
- 7:28There's a reason why we have legislation and laws and regulations around putting
- 7:33things like data centers in areas where you may not have the chance.
- 7:36There is a proposed area that they're proposing in I believe
- 7:39Saskatchewan or Alberta.
- 7:41It's on indigenous land, like actual treaty-holding indigenous land.
- 7:46And there's, like, a consulting period with the indigenous people, but they don't
- 7:50have a say on whether it goes in or not.
- 7:51That doesn't make sense.
- 7:52That doesn't make sense one bit.
- 7:54And unfortunately, I don't know the full details on that, so I
- 7:56don't wanna speak about that.
- 7:57This is what I'm talking about by having regulations happen for a reason,
- 8:00putting in the right regulations and no exemptions, and people have a say.
- 8:03If you're putting it on someone's land, whether it's a city, whether
- 8:06it's a reservation, whether it's a treaty land, whatever that might be.
- 8:10Those people should have a say, should have a say on what
- 8:12goes in, what doesn't go in.
- 8:14And the people who are in charge of making those decisions that were elected to
- 8:17get there should listen to the people.
- 8:20If the majority of people and they're making big noise that they
- 8:22don't want it, it shouldn't go in.
- 8:24And if it does go in, it should go in properly.
- 8:27And the one thing that I've learned and what I love about indigenous groups is
- 8:29that when a proposal like this comes in, they make sure it's good for the
- 8:33people, it's good for the environment, and it's good for the community.
- 8:36But what's it gonna do to all those factors?
- 8:38And how is it gonna affect the community as a whole?
- 8:39How's it gonna affect the environment?
- 8:40'Cause they live in unison with the environment.
- 8:43That's the thought process when they make decisions, and
- 8:46that's an important process.
- 8:47We talked about it yesterday, when we were talking about how we should
- 8:49love the ocean, and we should consider the ocean in every decision that
- 8:52we make, and that's what happens, and we should consider the land.
- 8:55But the whole point of this episode is, is you're taking these data centers,
- 8:58and people are against putting these data centers in their backyard.
- 9:01They don't want the noise, they don't want to give up the water usage,
- 9:03they don't wanna give up the power.
- 9:04' Some of these data centers are powered by renewable energy, but a lot of them
- 9:08are gonna be proposed to be powered by natural gas, maybe even nuclear.
- 9:12And some people don't like that.
- 9:13Obviously, the nuclear is kind of like considered renewable, but people
- 9:16have problems for obvious reasons.
- 9:18And then of course, there's the fossil fuels, like natural gas.
- 9:20You don't want to use natural gas.
- 9:22You wanna use renewables to be able to power this.
- 9:24And so this is where it could be done right, where the regulations
- 9:27stipulate that this has to happen.
- 9:28If we really wanna get towards a net zero future, which we have to so that we
- 9:33don't affect climate change, or we can reduce climate change, we need to do this.
- 9:37This needs to happen, and I think it's important that it does.
- 9:40I love the fact that people are kind of like standing up, and it's working.
- 9:44Not in all cases, but standing up.
- 9:46And I think that's the thing is that you see these communities
- 9:48come together, all different backgrounds, all different people.
- 9:51They don't have to be scientists.
- 9:52They don't have to be regulators.
- 9:53They don't have to be policy people.
- 9:54They don't have to be lawyers.
- 9:56They can be everybody.
- 9:56Any background.
- 9:58We are in this together as a community.
- 10:00And so if you don't want a data center in your community for whatever reason,
- 10:03then you speak up for that reason.
- 10:06And you speak up to your councilors.
- 10:07You speak up to your state representatives and federal
- 10:10representatives as well because they have to show what side they're on.
- 10:14And if they're not on the side that you want, you don't
- 10:15vote for them the next time.
- 10:17That's really what it comes down to.
- 10:18It's not always black and white like that.
- 10:20It's not always clear.
- 10:21The future can sometimes be a little dim or a little gray in areas,
- 10:25but this is how it should work, and we're seeing the fight happen.
- 10:28And I know from an environmental perspective, an ocean perspective, we're
- 10:31seeing a lot of things get recoiled from regulations, especially in the US, even in
- 10:35Canada with all these pipelines going in.
- 10:37But we need to stand up.
- 10:39There are people all over the world who are standing up, who are showing
- 10:41up in droves, who are making the public comments and everything.
- 10:44So when it comes down to it, those will be listened to,
- 10:46depending on who's there, right?
- 10:48And what's good about a lot of these decisions, the decisions are gonna
- 10:51affect the planet for a long time.
- 10:53These politicians aren't gonna be there for that long, for most of them.
- 10:56And so you need to make these decisions for the long term.
- 10:58Think long term rather than short term like a politician thinks,
- 11:01and I think that's something that's really, really important.
- 11:04The bad ones, anyway.
- 11:04The good politicians think beyond their own power and their own time.
- 11:08So, that's it for today's episode.
- 11:10I'd love to hear what you think.
- 11:11Are you getting part of these AI data centers, like protests?
- 11:14Have you gone out to some?
- 11:16Are you contributing to campaigns for some, like in terms of effort or monetary?
- 11:20I would love to hear your thoughts on this.
